(upbeat music) Nine o'clock in a great city of Chicago. Hoodies off today, Adam Abdullah is in. Don't forget we're the home of the Chicago White Sox and you get the Sox and Astros tonight. 6.30, our pregame show economy. Night and then it is Len and DJ on the call just after seven from the Juice Box Minute Maid Park down in Houston and then tomorrow we get Bears football. Shay, what time does the pregame festivities start tomorrow? Nine, is it nine? - Eight AM with myself and Chris Bleck. - Okay, you guys are on eight and Shelby's on. At what time? - 10 AM. - 10, okay, you wanna make sure I had it accurate. Training camp coverage brought to you by the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. So yesterday the Bears went to work against the Bengals. Unfortunately, two Bengals players had to be carted off in aircasts. One of them ended up with a torn patellar tendon. Not a good thing. Zach Taylor said it had nothing to do with the rain. It was just a fluke and it happened and it's unfortunate but it is what it is. But then the big news was they're not playing and they're starters to Cincinnati Bengals. None of 'em. What about the Bears? Here's Matt Eber Flus. - Really good day and I wanna just compliment, first of all, our guys and also Cincinnati for being professionals. You know, you always worry about guys going off and fighting and all those things and they did. We're great. They stayed on their feet, stayed away from the quarterback on both sides and did a really good job of just being professional and they were physical. We got some really good work done. So a lot of good situations in that practice. Like I said, that's the first time I've done that. One day, joint practice. And again, I thought it was really good. A lot of good work in the kicking game. As you guys saw, certainly with that long period, we had a kickoff kickoff return. That was very beneficial for us to be able to go back and look at that punt and punt return. That was really good too. But again, we finished off with a two minute at the end. I thought that was good with the ones and twos. A lot of good work overall. In terms of the starters this week, I'm just going to say this. We feel really good about our plan and the process that we've been through so far in training camp. And you will see the starters in that game. So again, I talked about competitive reps the other day. And I feel like we've gotten a lot of good competitive reps. One zone, one's, a lot of good situations. This day was another chance for us to get competitive reps against another opponent, another skill set, which was outstanding. And then this week coming up on Saturday, we get another chance to get some reps there too. So we feel really good about that. - There you go. So you're going to get Caleb. You're going to get all the guys out there. Tom said he would let, as I think you asked him, the question about the offensive line, maybe even playing a little bit longer with Tyson, Bajent in front or behind them. But I'm excited to watch the whole group take the field, it's all your field and just see how it shakes up. - Yeah, I mean, I would probably play them and see how it goes, but I would give Caleb 25-ish snaps, whatever that looks like. I thought it was weird what the Bills did when they said that Josh Allen would play a quarter and as soon as the quarter ended, even though it was in the middle of the drive, they pulled him. Like I thought that was kind of just finished the drive. Like what are we doing here? So I would probably, yeah, 25 snaps, whether that's a quarter and a half, whatever it is ends up being a half or maybe just a quarter if they go on two very long drives and end up scoring. I would like to see him complete a drive in the end zone though. - Okay, so what if they take the opening kick first to 10 at the 27 yard line and he takes them right down the field and you're like, wow, that was awesome. Into the end zone, touchdown Chicago, do you sit him then? - No, no, I'd probably play him another drive, why not? Like what's the harm? Nothing besides injury obviously, but you can get hurt in the first, we saw Aaron Rodgers get hurt in the first play of the season. So besides injury, every snap he takes is learning. Every snap that he plays, the more he plays in the preseason, the more ready he's going to be for week one against the Titans. I would even after this game, prepare for the Chiefs game next Thursday as if it was a regular short week. Do whatever you would do on Monday, do whatever you would do on Tuesday, do whatever you do on Wednesday. Get him ready as if he's playing in a short week because you have a couple of those in this year. Then take three snaps, hand it off. - Hands it off and turn him out. - Yeah, call it a day, that's fine. But he's never experienced a short week in the NFL. Let him experience what it's like to have, you know, minimal prep essentially for a game. I'm sure, look, Andy Reed said the Chiefs are playing an entire half this year or this week. I don't know what they're doing next week, but I would imagine maybe Patrick Mahomes comes out for a series in place. They have like 17 or 18 days in between the Chiefs game and the regular season. Like there's nothing wrong with playing both in both games. Even if it's for a series next week on Thursday, I would like to see him play well. I would like to see them get in the end zone or at least attempt to get in the end zone. If you have another short field goal of Matt Eberfloos, how about go for it instead of trying to kick a field goal on fourth down when you're on the 20 yard line? Just go for it. Like what difference does it make? What are we practicing kicking now? Carlos Santos can practice kicking all he wants to. He doesn't have to do it in the game. Get more snaps for Caleb Williams. Go for it on fourth down. But Eberfloos likes to coach it like he would coach it in the regular season. - Good for him. I'm more concerned about Caleb Williams getting refs. Go for it. You don't think that would boost his confidence if he picks up a fourth down? Come on. - What he does. What if he does? - Then you, okay, so what? It's not a real game. - 'Cause then he's got to listen to goofs like you go on the air and go to the beers that couldn't stick in the end zone. They lost and they didn't this and they didn't that. - Yeah, you're one of those goofs. - Probably. - You will come in after the Titans game if they fail because Eberfloos was conservative and was kicking field goals instead of going for it. - No, no, no, no, no, no, no, because last year against Denver, he went for it and guess how that worked out. - Well, that was a crappy team. - Yeah, and that was a bad decision. 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6. So this is a reporter who covers the Bengals. Jeremy Rock from Fox 19, he said he had a couple of takeaways from watching these two teams yesterday at Hallis Hall. Listen to this. - Hey everyone, I thought today's practice needed some context. I know there's a lot of concern from some fans back in Cincinnati, kind of seeing the tweets and everything that played out today and practice for the Bengals. My one big takeaway from practice today is probably an obvious one, but I felt like some context was needed. So I'll just throw this out there. Today was the first day that it really looked like my goodness, Joe Barro needs to march ace. Today in the rain, when he wasn't thrown to T Higgins, ball was tipped, it was overthrown, it was behind a receiver, he had three interceptions, it just looked like Joe Barro wasn't comfortable. This offense does not go without Jamar Chase on the field, especially against the Chicago defense, so I thought it was pretty darn impressive. So that's a big takeaway for today's practice. As for the defense, and I'm guessing there's no Bears fans on here, I could not have been more impressed with how Caleb Williams looks, and you look at his receiving corner, reminded of who they could be this year with Roma Doomsday, the rookie, Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and DJ Moore gave the Bengals DB's trouble all day long. It just to me looked like the Bears offense was better than the Bengals defense. And a lot of ways, now the Bengals defense wasn't able to slow them down with what they wanted to do. So two big takeaways, felt like the Bears won the day. - How about that? - Yeah. - It's just so good to hear. - Well, yeah, when we got the reports that Joe Burrow was struggling, my first thought was, well, one of the best wide receivers in the NFL isn't out there, of course he's struggling. Like, Jamar Chase isn't out there. Like that's, we talk about the Bengals and how good Joe Burrow is, because he has two of the best receivers. Like his second receiver is still one of the best receivers in the NFL. So the fact that Jamar Chase isn't out there, of course it's going to hurt them. They better get something done with him before the season starts. So he plays, like they need Jamar Chase. I'm not saying they need him more than they need Joe Burrow. They need both of them pretty equally. So I would say that, yeah, of course they struggled. I think this defense is going to be good regardless of what happened yesterday. Like this was a top 10 defense at the end of the year. They played like a top 10 defense. They led in takeaways, all that kind of stuff. I think they have the chance to be as good, if not better this year. You improved by getting rid of Eddie Jackson and adding Kevin Bayard. You probably still need some help opposite Montez Sweat. But this is going to be a very good defense, assuming everyone stays healthy. But this is going to be a really, really good defense. And that's why, you know, I think that Caleb Williams will have some growing pains, but they won't be as bad. Like if he throws an interception early in a game, this defense is good enough where they might not give up the scores easily as other defenses might. So he can, some of those mistakes might not be as bad and as backbreaking in games because of how good this defense can be. - Right, they can bail him out. - Yeah, 100%. - 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-6. Also, I wanted to play this because Joe Burrow talked about how important it is that the Bears named Caleb the starter, like the day they drafted him. That's our guy. He's the dude. - Yeah, I think those are just, those reps are so valuable. I think you have to start him right away 'cause you learn so much in that first year when you're getting those reps. And when you come in and you're named the starter immediately, you know, I'll never quite understand when you draft a guy that you know is going to be your starter, but then you don't name it your starter immediately. And so then he misses out on all those reps with the ones that, you know, you would have had had you just come in as the starter. That's what, you know, it's great about my situations. Zach told me I was the starter as soon as I got drafted. And I got all those reps with the ones in training camp. We didn't have OTAs that year, but those reps are so valuable in every rep you grow and you learn so much from. So I think that's always a challenge if that doesn't happen. - And they've had a relationship. I did not realize that he hosted Caleb on a visit to LSU. They had dinner, they became friends, and then Caleb goes Oklahoma to USC. And they start hanging out in LA in the off season and working out together. Like they're boys. - Can you think of, Shay, can you think of the different path that would have happened if Caleb ended up at LSU? Like Ed Orgeron was coaching Joe Burrow. And then if Caleb Williams would have gone there. - And then what would have happened to Jayden Daniels? - What would have happened to Jayden? Well, Ed Orgeron might still be coaching LSU. - And Jayden Daniels would still be at Arizona State. - And Jayden James would still be at Arizona State. Lincoln Riley might not have gone to USC from Oklahoma. Ooh, the butterfly effect of that. I love that. - Pretty cool. - That's great. - Pretty cool. I'm glad he didn't as an Alabama fan. - Also wanted to play this. Pat McAfee, which is part of the family at ESPN, he and Darius Butler were talking about Jalen Johnson. Who might, might today be the best player on the roster? - They got some talent up there. - Oh yeah. - They really do. But he might be the very best they have. Here are those guys on what they think of Jalen. - But you learn about these players. You learn about players. In last night, the Chicago Bears, I feel like there was a showcase of a few of their players that are top end guys. And that's Jalen Johnson and DJ Moore. Now, granted, Caleb obviously had a massive, massive night on the show. Iber Flusz as well. And Colin Johnson, we celebrated because obviously how big he was there. But whenever you talk about two studs on their team, both of them got paid, I do believe. - Yes. - Yeah. - Yeah, I believe both of them have been paid now. That's where I took away from last night's hard dog, except for said. I know you watched last night, nine year NFL, that Darius J Butler, your thoughts on hard dogs. - Yeah, obviously you don't want to see a head coach. You want to see some of the unknown rookies, making their name for themselves, Caleb. But seeing DJ Moore, Kenan Allen going at it and practicing and look, I'm not, I'm sorry. DJ Moore, Kenan Allen and Jalen Johnson. Who's an absolute dog? One of my favorite corner, it was kind of, almost like seemed like his episode, kind of getting a glimpse of him. Obviously you saw some comments he made last week when the top 100 came out. He wasn't on it, had some comments about Aaron being on it. He definitely should be on, I think, a top five corner. But to see how they compete, you know, 'cause some guys, you know, one on ones, you know, some guys may be okay, this may be a period. I go get my wrist tape. I go do something else from a top guy. But to see the top guys compete with each other. And obviously take that into the game. Kenan Allen, I look, hey, I know it's probably some editing going on. I don't know, but he's got to start winning some of these reps. He's an absolute dog. DJ Moore, love seeing him getting after it. Talking about how he loves football, getting banged up in the game. And obviously Rome too. Rome had some glimpses in there as well. He should be a top guy, top target this season. I'm excited about these bears, man. I know Zeke's all Zeked up back there. I'm excited about these bears. - Excited about these bears. We haven't heard that in so long. - Yeah, oh wow. I think we heard it a little bit last year. I think they're worse than there. It was the hype going into the Packers game was very high. I remember saying before that game, I can't remember a more hyped regular season game than last year against the Packers. - You mean the first game? - Yeah, the first game. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Everybody thought this defense was going to be good. They add unique and gawk way before the season started. Everybody's like, this is the year. Fields is going to take the step. Like last year was very hype last year. - We're green. We're law ski saying MVP fields. - Yes, yes, they were. So yeah, we're very quick to forget how high we were on the bears last year. - Not all. - Going in. I'm just saying a lot of people were. A lot of people were very high on the bears. And yeah, that Keaton Allen, Jalen Johnson thing might have been the only part of hard knocks that didn't put me to sleep. - Oh, oh, see, I liked it. - Oh, it's awful. - It's awful. - It's awful. - It's so bad. - It's so bad. I was joking about this yesterday at Carmen in Yerko from the network that brought you Oz, a real life look inside of what goes on inside a prison from the network that brings you Game of Thrones where incest is happening left and right. And people are doing things with dragons and their sister and their brother and stuff. Comes a show about the NFL where we can't swear. What are we doing? I'm with Shay. I said it a couple days ago. I guarantee you the bears went in and said take out the swears. Guarantee it. - I'm sorry, when you build this whole thing it's unprecedented access for a team that's never allowed it. And then 90% of the camp footage is from open practices and you're dropping the swears from podium availabilities where Jalen Johnson publicly swore, God forbid you allow it in hard knocks. None of it feels that authentic to me. None of it feels like unprecedented access. I'm very disappointed and I'll keep watching. But if it's much like the last two, I'm good. Even Thayer said it with you guys yesterday, I'm watching because I have to. I love it. - Yeah, I enjoy it. I do, I do. - It's fine. - My team out there, I cheer for and yeah, I like it. I absolutely love it. - She and Golly, I should have been on the top 100. Ah! - Yeah, when he says that's bull, that should be in that. - That's malarkey. - That's malarkey. - But like Cap, what is different with what they're doing in hard knocks? What is there that wasn't available in their 1920 football drive YouTube? - Nothing. We're heading nothing that we wouldn't have gotten there. - The Panther, the Roma Dunes A clip was airing, was like, they were showing, I was watching the episode where Roma Dunes A was doing the singing to Chris Brown. And as I'm scrolling through Twitter 'cause I was bored, the Panthers release their own clip of their rookies singing. - Wisconsin football released freshmen doing it. - Yeah, everybody doesn't know. - This is just on a network. - You know what had been dope for hard knocks? If we had the drama that they had last year with the coaching staff and all that stuff, but we still have the same team this year. - Oh yeah, see that's the thing, Jay Moore, is that there's no, I'm not saying the team is boring, but the team is drama-less. Like there's no drama around this team. There's no like Aaron Rodgers coming in like the Jets did last year, right? There's no hold out. There's no, there's not even any really big battles that can't for any big positions. Everything is kind of set. It's kind of like the team is kind of boring. - If they had been there and said, "Oh wow, the FBI's here, remember all those rumors?" - Yeah, well even think about it, what we talked about with Tom Thayer last hour. Like if they were there a couple of years ago when Kevin Jenkins was maybe requesting a trade and wasn't playing and all that kind of stuff, that would have been way more interesting. - All right, we will take quick time out, Courtney Cronin with her Friday hit with us is next. So we were talking with Tom Thayer earlier and we got the Bengals perspective from one of their TV reporters. What was your takeaways from the joint practice yesterday, winners, losers, and maybe something that surprised you? - I'm gonna start with the Bengals here. And I think we know that Jamal Chase was there. Like saw him, he's kind of incognito. He's wearing all black, but he was out there for most of practice watching. But you can tell Joe Burrow really misses him. They weren't able to push the ball down the field at all. It felt like he was locking in on certain guys. There were a lot of drops. Of course, it's grainy. So it's gonna be a day that favors the defense. But that raised an eyebrow for me because I had been hearing from the reporters in Cincinnati that this wasn't a great week for him, that he had not looked good and had not looked that confident out there. And maybe it's the risk. Maybe it's lingering pain from that. Even though Joe Burrow says he's, I heard him yesterday afterwards that he's on the right track. All of the things seem to be moving where they need to. I don't know. That just seems a little concerning to me. And it was a good day for the Bears defense or three takeaways, the interceptions, Kevin Byard, Greg Strowman. I know there was another one in there. I can't remember who ended up walking away with that pick. But offensively, there was a lot that was left on the table from the Bengals. And I guess on the other side offensively for the Bears. You know, after the pick Caleb threw in seven on seven, he really didn't miss a beat. I mean, he was still able to stretch the ball down the field. Roman Dunes, they had a long catch or a deep catch. I think his long touchdown was Keenan Allen in the team period. And then, of course, the two highlight plays that the Bears put out on social media were the red zone catches from Keenan Allen and DJ Moore. So by and large, I thought they got a lot of work in. I mean, I was skeptical at first just how bad it was raining in the conditions in which they were in. But the Bengals played the Browns last year in a month soon. The Bears played an inclement weather, too. It's good to get some experience with that in the preseason if you can, and making sure you come out of it relatively healthy, at least for the Bears they did. - What you said about Caleb Williams is something that I've thought about a lot this training camp is his ability to adjust after making a mistake and not letting mistakes kind of ruin the day. And even when we hear, "Oh, there's an issue with the cadence." And then they have it often and you come back and you're like, "Oh, the cadence is fine now." Like, and he did this a lot at USC, too. What have you seen from him in these training camps and his ability to rebound from mistakes? - So I go back to a conversation. When we talk with Marc Sadie's Lewis last week, I asked him about Caleb on his worst days of practice. What is he like? And this is somebody who's been around a lot of quarterbacks in his career. And he said that the conversations you see Caleb having on the sidelines after a bad two minute period or the defense is getting the better end of the offense in team drills, you see Caleb going up to guys on the sideline and he's moving his arms around. So clearly he's talking about specific routes. Maybe somebody didn't run something the way that he had anticipated. Maybe there was a miscommunication and they weren't on the same page. Instead of just kind of keeping to himself, sulking anything that I guess he could do, he seems like he's taking a very proactive approach. So what Marc Sadie's Lewis said was those conversations are him trying to talk with guys to figure out, "Okay, where will we not think up here? Why did this not work?" And sometimes it's just the defense. It's really good defense. Sometimes it's that the defense has the edge because they are a very good unit and bears expect them to be a big reason why they win games this year. But that's not to say that Caleb can't find learning moment in any of that. So you see him do that and you see how he rebounded after the pick in seven on seven yesterday, he didn't throw another one. And they've been really good with ball security. Yesterday was like a prime day for fumbled and we did see some, you know, must kick off returns, must pawns because it's understandable in the conditions. You don't want that in a game, but like you have to factor that in. You don't see that with the offense, the quarterback center exchange, which I was a little, you know, thinking okay, maybe this will be something that they have to work at because they were rotating centers for so much of camp. That hasn't been an issue, whether he's in the shotgun or under center. So by and large, like he's done a really good job taking care of the football, which we know is paramount to the success of this offense and something that was an issue the last time around with the last quarterback. - So after watching them yesterday and watching the bangles and Joe Burrough struggling with the Bears defense, more excited about where this thing could be headed the same or, no, I'm actually not really excited. - Well, they're seeing a different defense. It's a different front. And Matt Eberfloos was talking about, you know, Buffalo was very similar to what the Chicago Bears do, and that was a good, you know, good entry point for Caleb Williams last week in the preseason. Not that you expect them to look all that different from what he saw in a training camp practice and a joint practice and probably even more vanilla tomorrow, but how Caleb was able to handle Cincinnati's defense knowing that those are looks he's not getting from what he sees every day in practice and didn't seem to be having too big of an issue with that. I think it shows you that they're on the right track. And you're not going to go, you know, crazy and say, wow, he's just, he's the greatest quarterback this franchise has ever had after a joint practice and one preseason game and who knows what happens weekend. But it's the progress that they've made over 30-something days of training camp. You're starting to see the pieces come together. So when players do say that they think they're going to be ready for week one, that they're on track for week one, there's credibility and credence that you can give to that based on what we've seen so far. I can't for the life of me understand why the decision might be between Villos Jones and Cleo Herbert. Like, like if you're just putting the two players together and saying, which is the better running back, it's 10 times out of 10, Cleo Herbert. So why are they still trying to force this square peg into a round hole with Villos Jones? - He just heard round pick and he was the first third round pick from Ryan Polls draft class, like the first one he made. Those players are always going to get a longer leash. That's just, that's the way it is. Yesterday, he was with the ones, which I was, he's gone from being, this experiment started last Tuesday. And he's already getting reps with the first team offense. That's kind of telling, at least how they feel that he's capable of that. But running the ball, being a running back is so much more than running the ball. It's task protection, it's blitz pick ups. It's, you know, being into block. I know that there's nuances to this game that he's not there yet with and he's admitted that. So you won't, if there are, if he does get the run that we expect him to, we know starters will play tomorrow. That means it'll probably be the rotation of the Andres Bliss and Cleo Herbert. Well, when Villos gets in there, you want to see a little bit more of what you saw last week in Buffalo. What did he do in Buffalo immediately? Trips over his feet and then, you know, starts to get into a groove after that. He lowers his helmet, lowers his shoulder into contact. That's what you have to do as a running back. And that's probably not something he's all that used to. Certainly not at the NFL level, but I, there's a lot left here before anybody can be confident that this is the experiment that's going to work out. He's got the speed, he's got the power and the tools to make it work in theory. But this is way too small of a sample size to say, "Oh, yeah, they found the magic fit for Villos Jones in this offense, just too early to tell." - Before we let you go, and we got a role, Villos Jones listening to "Eber Flus"? Boy, he sounds like I really am impressed with this dude. So maybe there's more to it than what, maybe what we're seeing just in practice, right? - Yeah, there's gotta be. And I think so much of it is him knowing it's now or never. Like players can feel the pressure of that and he should because there's been, it's three years now. I mean, the average lifespan in the NFL for careers is right around two and a half, three years. He doesn't want to become the statistic of the guys who didn't have it work out, but rather somebody who did whatever he could, found whatever role he could hold on to in this offense to make an impact. And that's going to be on kickoff return on special teams. And certainly if they can make this thing work with him at running back, and I'm not saying that he's going to be beating out Khalil Herbert for a job. But I didn't like the way Hartnock's positioned it, like between Vailas Jones and Ian Wheeler, because we don't always reclassify in a running back first and foremost. And Ian Wheeler is an undrafted free agent who's like way at the bottom of the depth chart because of injuries and because there's just more guys there. I think it would be probably between Vailas and Travis Homer, if it were doing a more accurate representation of what that battle could be. But even then, it's a numbers game. And if they're trying to justify his spot on the roster, they've got to make it work from a numbers perspective, so they're not taking from another position where they need depth or need somebody else just to get Vailas on the roster. - Courtney, have an awesome weekend. - Thanks guys, take care. - Take care. - Courtney Cronin on the CarX Tire, an auto hotline. Friday folder, next. (upbeat music) - Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. - Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. - Of his body. - It's time for the Friday folder. - Anything else you do? - On the Captain Jay Hood show. (upbeat music) - Friday folder brought to you by the best Loomal Notties go to loomalnotties.com. Today is a Friday. My friend Chris Black, he calls it pizza night. He said on Friday, you should get pizza. His thought of Loomalnotties is to get the deep dish with the low fat cheese. He said, not because I'm looking to cut fat because he likes the way it works on his pizza. He's a pepperoni guy. He gets it uncut, which is the best way to get it according to my wife who works there. And if you'd like to ship it around the country, tastes of Chicago. Dotcom are all sorts of great treats. Here is Shane Orland. - All right, we begin with a 68 year old cafeteria consultant in a local school district in the Chicago land area who admitted to stealing one and a half million dollars in chicken wings from the school district. She stole 11,000 cases of chicken wings. She moved them in a district vehicle for food service. She did this all to cover a gambling habit. And now Chief's defensive tackle, Chris Jones, wants to pay for the wings in order to keep her out of prison. - Okay, but is it the crime that, I know it's a million and a half dollars in chicken wings, but is she going to jail because of the dollar amount? 'Cause she got a lot of time.
