Mike Moore Media. On our media line, Lindsey Pegg, tourism manager for Rockingham County, Center for Economic Development, Small Business, and Tourism. Lindsey, hey, how you doing? Doing well, Mike. I hope you are. Yes, busy week as always. I know for you, but today you're looking at some family-friendly activities around Rockingham County. That sounds like fun. Oh yeah, definitely with the start of school quickly approaching, we felt that we, you know, let's address some of these fun, you know, family-friendly activities that you can do here at the end of summer. So there's a lot going on in the county. Sure, okay. Well, I have my pencil and paper and I'm ready to take notes, so let's jump right in, okay? Well, I think the big thing about when you are looking at the end of summer and the start of school is like, go out, get outdoors, get outdoors one last time. So we still have all of these wonderful trails in the county that we just, we want to say, we're the mall, if you get a chance. You got this one last weekend before school starts. Also two splash pads in the county, one in Eden, one in Reeveville, if it's, I don't have it looked at the weather, whether to be honest. So I don't know what the temperatures are going to be like, but everybody likes to be around water here in the summer. So two splash pads, one at Freedom Park, one at Daisy Park in Reeveville, the Freedom Parks in Eden, and then obviously try to connect if you really want to experience the water adventures. Try to connect with one of our river outsetters. We have three in the county. We have Faith Camp in Madam, Slodory and Madtown Tubing in Madison. So you've got three options. You can experience all different parts of the river. If that's your thing, try to get that one last river tubing trip in before the close of the season. It usually happens, those outsiders usually wrap up things towards the end of August, so we're getting closer to that date. So I'm going to, you know, keep it outdoors. That's the big thing. And, you know, also a lot of our municipalities are hosting a lot of fun events this weekend. There seems to be a lot going on this weekend, particularly. You can tell it's back to school, but Eden will be hosting that touchy truck event, which I've been keeping track of the post online. They're queuing up for a big event out there, off the new street there, and Eden for touchy trucks. Also, the second refill is going to be hosting their second annual color run. So Mike, if you've never experienced the color run, I was out there last year and it was a lot of fun. The city of rainfall, a refill park and recreation, built this color run at Courtland Park, so they have a lot of things going on at Courtland Park. They have bounce houses and vendors and things like that, but the really neat part is that they have they've mapped out a trail for youth, for yourself, whomever, to go down this trail. And along the trail, there's going to be these, you're going to be hit with like different types of colors. So when you start off with a clean white t-shirt and you end up with this multi-colored tie-dye looking t-shirt, it's really cool. They just had a lot of fun with it. It was, it was really neat to see them come off the trail and they just all smiles. I will say that. So they start at Courtland Park and you'll in fact up at Courtland Park. So if you're in town or if you're visiting, that is definitely something you want to stop by and do. It is, it is a lot of fun. So I'm hoping that we're some of the most success of that event out there in resale. Sure. Now that color run starts at 11 in the morning and backing up there, touch a truck starts at 10 in Eden. So just put some times on those two, yeah. Okay. Thanks. Good point on that. But yeah, so you can do one and then do the other. Sure. That's a nice thing about the counties. You can kind of plan your whole weekend around these events. So if you're looking, if you're, you know, a family sometimes you're looking for a fun night out. And so I know that resale on Friday night is going to be hosting their summer concert series at Market Square. That event's going to be going on. That's coming Friday at from 7 to 9 or to late, that's tomorrow, sorry, Saturday, 7 to 9. I think that's time on that one. So it's on Saturday and then kind of, we don't get a lot to just talk about this, but I know a lot of folks go ahead and circle them back to getting outdoors. The Carolina Marina at Blue Lake has specials on all those fishing gear. So if you're, if you're, you know, interfishing and want to kind of try it out, they've got a lot of great deals on some of their fishing gears. Everything from life jacket to fishing poles to tackle. They've got a big special going on out there at Blue Lake. So I would, and they've just rebuilt this marina. It's absolutely gorgeous. It's a huge, it's a huge shop that they have right there on the lake, right beside their restaurant called the deck. So really encourage folks if you haven't been out that way to the western side of the county, right there on the Guilford County line. Really neat place to do a great job out there. Yeah, sure. That's right. Okay. Well, you know, I want to, I want to back up just a minute about, you know, you mentioned the, the rivers and the lakes and, you know, just so many water fun things to do too. And I see those posts online with you. You really enjoy getting out on the rivers, don't you? In the water? I do. I do. I do. If we, anytime we host an event or we being some, the partners in the county and like Dan River Basin Association or some of our local, or our municipalities, if they're hosting something like river festers coming up in Eden, we like to, I like to be out there. Just recently we, we had the Dan, it was a partnership with Coast County, Darba, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and some other partners that we hosted a Dan River State Trail weekend. It was the first ever, just to really celebrate the Dan River. And it was a multi-day event, super successful, a lot of fun to be on the lookout for that next year. But yeah, you will find me out there quite a bit. And Mike, I'm glad you brought this up. This isn't necessarily happening in our county, but I will say that Dan, the Dan River Basin Association is hosting a Smith River cleanup. And for those that listeners that aren't aware, the Smith River does run through our county. So if you're interested in, and this is an annual cleanup that the Dan River Basin Association hosts, it'll be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Smith River runs, you know, if you're cleaning up the river, that is great. If it's upstream from Eden, where the Smith River runs through, then that's perfect. Because yeah, you know, water runs down. So we want to keep the rivers nice and clean so that you can have that same river experience that you do upstream, or you do downstream. So if you want to get on the Smith River and really experience that river, and what it's like to do a cleanup, which is super, it's a great feeling when you get off the river, like that you've been able to, you know, take part in preserving what we have here in the county and that conservation aspect. So, but yeah, that Dan River Basin Association is really hosting that this coming Saturday from 9 a.m. If you visit their Facebook page, you can, there's a lot more information here. But there'll be, you can kind of see what that looks like. But you know, Dan River Basin Association, they're always hosting river cleanups. They do one here in the Dan River in the county, so this would happen to be able to Smith. They like to do these cleanups right before a big event. So we thank them. It's great when you're visiting the county and you see that we have all these outdoor resources and how clean they are. So yeah, that's off to them, thank you. Yeah, I'm glad you mentioned that I was reading that online earlier this week about that that's going on Smith River. But you just said something just kind of brought something up to mind. I know you were at the Made in Town Council meeting earlier this week and you know, there's so many good events happening all over the county and they had a lot to say, a lot of speakers there that meeting and made in about the trail. So let's touch on that just a minute too. Yeah, thank you. You're always so good about this because my brain goes is moving so fast. But yeah, lots of things happening on the trails or round trails or centered around trails and our outdoor resources here in the county. And I would, I really want to say that like because of the successful year of the trail campaign last year, which I really appreciate you helping us promote that with the state, you know, the Great Trails State Coalition lobby for funding from the state of North Carolina. And so now there's this pocket of funding available, which and it's encouraging all counties and municipalities and towns to continue to build on these outdoor resources, whether they're river accesses, they're hiking, biking, equestrian trails, you know, whatever those trails look like, paddle trails, you've got this funding. So I've been working with all of our municipalities to say, what what shovel ready projects do we have? What do we want to build on? What do we need to build? What are we, what are we missing? And yeah, there is a lot of movement happening. And so I'm going to try to find it real quick. We are, there will be a zoom call next Tuesday at 6 p.m. about some new trails that are going to be coming hopefully, we're trying to get some new trails out at Ferris Park. And this would be development on the North side of Ferris Park, which is your familiar with Ferris Park in May it in. You've got the main entrance there and where you have the ball fields and the soccer fields and the disc golf and the mountain bike trail and the big lake or the pond. So across the street, we refer to that as Ferris Park North. There's a small palm there and some shelters, but typically there's not a lot of there's no trails out there. So we're working with resilient trails network and ground rock design and the town of Madison and the river basin association are working on going after some grant funding to put trails on the ground out there. About four to five miles of trails. And so what we're looking, what we're hosting is we're hosting a community meeting. It's going to be via zoom and if you go to the Facebook page made in mountain bike trail, you'll be able to link into that zoom call. It will be, let me give you the time. I think it's that exam, but I want to make sure I have it correct. It's at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2020. It's a public meeting via zoom to talk about these new trails and you kind of get that input like whether you want to see some of these trails. You want them to be again or friendly or you want to be mostly used obviously with biking and hiking. You know that you kind of want to hear the what the community thinks and we want to hear those folks that from outside the county to come in and use the trails that Ferris Park has currently as well. Like what are they looking for? What's going to continue to bring them to Rockingham County and to Ferris Park and so it's a town of metadata. So really if you set time on Tuesday the 20th at 6 p.m. Please zoom in and let's hear you know you will see the map and what everything's going to look like. So that is one big project going on. We have several others and hopefully as these other projects start to develop. I'll be able to come back on and kind of tell you kind of give you a sneak peak of what those look like. But lots of things happening in the county when it comes to trail development. And I'm I'm really really thankful for our partners in the county and I've been a couple partners and a non-profit partner. So thank you. Thank you for everyone kind of starting at the life there at this culture and it's outdoor recreation culture and it's really starting to develop in the county. So thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah that is exciting to see just in the last few years how that's continuing to grow and build and expand. Yeah and community input on things like that. Madison Midan recreation doing something similar now. Recreation plans for the next five ten years or whatever. That community input is so very important isn't it? It is and it's you know we want to when we go after funding or we start to plan and and and draw up these concepts we want we want to know what the community we need to know what the community like what their thoughts are. You don't want to just put funding down and assume that it's going to draw people like we want to hear from these people these trail users and these that people like what are they what are they looking for if it's the recreation plan that the Madison Midan Recreation Commission's hosting. Like are they looking for more dense space? Are they looking for additional pickleball courts, tennis courts, multi-use courts you know what is the where's that need and that kind of helps us you know kind of streamline oh we here we go let's go after this kind of funding or let's let's work let's partner with this this organization. It's hard it's hard to we can't guess. I would say I it's I love to hear from what the community needs and then also I feel like this upcoming call will have a lot of folks from outside the county on it as well so I'm excited to hear like what are they looking for sure what are our visitors yeah.
