[music] Look real close, I think you can just about see the weekend from here. It's a Friday! Thanks for joining us here on the radio. I'm Eric Carpenter and you're listening to K-C-V-L, K-C-R-K. A lot of activities going on this weekend. Quick mention, just one of those things. If you're down the hunter's direction, it's one of the county fairs. Yeah, going on Saturday, the hunter's fair. Down that direction, stop in and see what's going on at hunters. If you're looking for a family-friendly outing this weekend, China Bend Winery is inviting the community to the annual garlic fair. It fails about the event happening on Saturday. This is Bart or Loyalty Alexander at the China Bend Winery and we're letting everybody know about our big garlic fair coming up here at the Winery on Saturday, August 17th from noon to five. It'll be right here at the China Bend Winery at 3751 Binyard Way on the North Port Black Creek Road along Lake Roosevelt. We have wonderful live music on stage just here featuring Murphy's Legacy Band. This is really a great event. It's a family event. So our annual garlic fair is the organic food and wine event where garlic is king. So there'll be the live music dancing on the lawn, victories organic foods, the local arts and craft vendors, organic sulfites and wine tasting. The wines that most popular this summer are two white wines, the Aurora and the Lake Roosevelt White and then two chilled rosé, rosé of Marichel Foche and the Lake Roosevelt rosé. Those are the main wine features for this weekend. Excellent wines on a hot summer day. Of course we don't begin our harvest until, oh probably towards the end of September and the harvest goes on through October but everything looks very healthy. We've got a good abundant crop set and we're looking forward to another sour vintage this year. They'll be food available. I'm not sure of the exact menu but you can be sure that there will be a bit of garlic in every dish to go along with the theme of the event. But you're also welcome to bring the picnic if you like. Enjoy the picnic lunch on our ground and you might want to bring your camping chair and blanket to sit on and please no dogs. Thank you very much. The boarding is really good. The house folks usually just pull up on our beach and it's just a short quarter mile walk from the beach on up to the winery. The admission is $10 a person 15 and under are in for free. We hope to see everybody here at the event. Thank you. That happens from noon until $5, $10 for adults to get in. They're at $751 vineyard way and Kettle Falls up the Northport Flat Creek Road. We've had quite a few stories about the bears getting into houses coming through Garbie jumping the Trail BC area. We've had reports of bears wandering around in North Colville this year. Thought I'd pass on a story over in Kiditas County. This is in Roslyn an unexpected turn for a 17 year old high school senior. Emily she was performing her usual chore of taking out the trash. She was about 930 at night made her way to the dumpster at the edge of the property. That's when she encountered a large male black bear emerging from the darkness. The bear Fish and Wildlife says likely brought on by the scent of discarded food. The bear swiped it Emily made contact with her arm through her clothing and left well luckily just scratches. The Fish and Wildlife say the injuries did not require immediate medical care. They did find evidence of the bear's presence around the dumpster. It was apparent that bear had become fond of human food a very dangerous situation for both the animal and the community. So Fish and Wildlife explaining to Emily and her family that bears quickly become food conditioned leading to more frequent and potentially dangerous encounters. The next day wildlife officials located and euthanized that bear a reminder of the unintentional consequences of human actions. The officials emphasized the importance of not feeding bears and properly disposing of garbage to prevent those incidents. They explained how bears conditioned to human food often meet tragic ends either by being killed to protect property or by wildlife managers to ensure public safety. As we get toward the fall time really important those bears are going to be wanting to fatten up for the winter hibernation. Let's be careful don't be putting garbage out or that when you do put your garbage out for the trash collection put it out that morning early. Let's not make these bears dependent on the human food. A little while back we did a story about the man that was intentionally driving down seagulls on the beach. Well charges now have been made. Reckless driving and felony cruelty to animals being recommended it was a Hawaii man accused of deliberately driving a rented Jeep Wrangler into a flock of birds along long beach. This happened back July 27th. The Department of Fish and Wildlife have sent recommendations to the Pacific County prosecutors. They've wrapped up their investigation. They say 25 seagulls were killed. Witnesses and police photos show the bodies lying in the sand along the path of that Jeep. One photo showed a bird still stuck in the Jeep's grill. Police say the vehicle driven by a 64 year old suspect was driving his wife and him were in the vehicle at the time but fish and wildlife they say that a Pacific County under sheriff attending a high school class reunion and golf event saw the incident. The officer wrote the report that identified the suspect from witness shows and they believe the man was likely under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Witnesses shocked at watching the events unfold on the beach that day. The Alaska Airline Flight Attendants they've rejected the tentative contract their union had negotiated. The Association of Flight Attendants they reject the agreement. The union represents 6,900 Alaska employees. Back in June they thought they had reached a tentative agreement after 18 months of negotiating but the voting closed on Wednesday this week the three-year contract would have boosted pay by 22 percent. Also compensated flight attendants for the boarding time before the plane takes off. Well this would be the first contract in US airline union agreements to include pay for flight attendants during the boarding process. Historically airlines have paid cabin crew members and to the front door is closed. The agreement covered 21 months of retroactive pay reflecting the time spent negotiating and that's back to the drawing board the union plans to survey the members and then to return to negotiations with Alaska Airlines They shaweal a school district. They continue to operate understaffed in their transportation department. They are operating with three fewer drivers than needed for their bus service They do have some substitute drivers that are going to keep them afloat. They do appreciate their efforts. Over the summer one of their drivers passed away. In addition another one of the drivers retired. Well in light of this shortage of school bus drivers in Chewila they are considering the safety of their current routes that cover cottonwood fleck hill, grouse creek, buzzard lake and flowery trail roads. They will be removing that particular route. Two of the current routes are going to pick up most of the stops of the removed routes There will be new pick up points at the intersection of Solker road and grouse creek road about 10 miles out from the schools on cottonwood and at the intersection of flowery trail and six mile road. Bus 13 is going to be providing service for downtown valley. The affected bus numbers if you are on bus 3 5 13 and 15. So if your child has been riding buses 3 5 13 or 15 with the Chewila schools if you've got questions call the district transportation supervisor 6 8 9 6 8 5 6 8 0 6 again all of the school districts it's been an issue a problem finding enough drivers for the school buses but changes being made in the route system for the Chewila schools. It was a day in Naples. Alright first off I have never been to Naples before and so you want to see as much as you can. Going on a cruise you might want to take in Naples not on a cruise because really it would take about three days at minimum to take in all the sites of Naples my choice was going underground Naples a very heavily bombed city during World War II in fact it is noted as the most heavily bombed city of any place during World War II because not only were the Americans bombing Naples the Germans then bombed Naples there are 220 underground bomb shelters in Naples very quickly they changed the aqueduct tunnels that were under Naples carved out into bomb shelters as World War II was beginning each of these bomb shelters would handle about 2,000 people so the air raid sirens would go off and very quickly people would scatter from the town to the underground tunnels these were very makeshift bomb shelters the particular tunnel area that I went first off we went down 95 steps underground. Now once you're underground into the tunnel system that's when you appreciate having a guide because if you went down into this tunnel system well I'm not sure I wouldn't still be wandering the tunnels underneath Naples would be very easy to totally get lost now the difference now they have run regular lighting systems to a lot of the underground under Naples during World War II had strung wires with 12 volts lights apparently very dimly lit if lit at all and all of the people would go quickly down into the tunnels until the bombing was done and of course when you're underground you can't hear anything from up above and so you really didn't know if the bombing was done or not so it was just to pen whether your lights were flickering or not whether the bombing was done. Of course you crowd that many people into the underground without adequate sanitation or anything else health concerns were a big thing. Now Naples today over 900,000 people nearly a million people live in Naples they have very nice beach areas they have areas where there was steel production steel factories that apparently heavily polluted the ground around steel meals and entire beach area that no one uses because of very high pollutants they are beginning to do some clean up in that area but it was interesting to see these steel meal areas that are totally closed and abandoned now but also nothing at all on the ground around that area they say it is just too highly polluted but underground 220 of these bomb shelters and luckily they had the aqueduct tunnels and the water storage underneath Naples well they changed that into bomb shelters during World War II. Well that was the early part of the day going down into the underground down under Naples and you could have spent a lot more time and a lot of time there looking at that because of the limited time we were not able to see a lot of the other sites of Naples because well the afternoon and evening I had planned to be in Pompeii where some 20,000 people were when the volcano erupted back in 79 AD and about 2000 of the 20,000 of Pompeii did not get out and in fact the entire town was buried in volcanic ash well they are continuing they've in all these years excavated about two-thirds of the Pompeii city in fact just two days ago they found another new skeleton there in their excavations so they continue to excavate around Pompeii and very interesting now we are talking about a very old city again the buried in 79 AD by the volcanic ash as they have excavated out they have found extensive plumbing within the city now these are lead pipes of course no one in that day knew that led was not good for you but it was a workable material and so the plumbing they had both cold and hot water now the hot water was made hot by furnace areas but they had hot and cold plumbing running through Pompeii back in 79 AD it was very interesting to see the ruins of Pompeii again this is an area where you could spend easily to three days just going through the extensive archaeological digs I was able to see a lot of it I was able to see all that I could again very much up and down walking and you better be in shape you have the opportunity and you are going to Europe aside from if you are going to take a cruise fabulous you're going to be able to see Naples Pompeii in the area around do take them in but these are areas that I would encourage you to spend an extra two to three days in both locations Pompeii about an hour away from Naples and you'll be able to see all of the volcanoes that are around the area on the mountainsides but Pompeii really worth your time to take a look at just a short distance from Naples but it is a stop today in Sicily I'll be taking a look at some of the historic churches in that I think today but it is not going to be a day of walking anything like yesterday because I can't do that much. Those little emergency shut off valves under your sink the ones you probably have trouble getting to because of soap window cleaner and dog shampoo hiding them and can you even turn them off if you need to Fogo pump and supply has the new quarter turn valves that use a brass ball seal and not a crusty washer. Fogo pump and supply the water professionals. What a bummer of a series Seattle Detroit held the Seattle Mariners to one hit and rallied for a two one win yesterday completing a three game sweep the teams were playing for the sixth time in nine days Detroit won two of the three last week in Seattle and then sweep the Mariners in Detroit the Mariners got seven scoreless innings from their starter for the second game in a row and then once again handed Detroit the win. Tough three games for the Mariners hard to see and all the starting pitchers throw so good and then the Mariners end up losing the game the Mariners scored four runs in a total in that three game series with Detroit Seattle did take a one nothing lead in the first when the Tiger opener walked four of the first six batters but beyond that the Mariners just didn't have the offense well the Mariners a quick trip to Pittsburgh to start a three game series with the Pirates the right-hander Logan Gilbert going to start today against the Pirates star rookie right-hander Detroit they stay at home they've got a three game series with the New York Yankees there so it's a tough three losses for the Mariners and they need to get some wins against the Pirates Mariners baseball you're going to hear it on 92.1 KCRK today's local weather forecast brought to you by forget me not at 173 South Main home of the Navajo cowgirl boutique filled with western clothing Judy blue denim shoes and accessories seasonal goods candy local souvenirs home decor lots of great gifts for any occasion of course scrapbook and stamping supplies at forgive me not they're open Monday through Friday 10 till 5 Saturdays 10 till 4 good chance we're going to see some afternoon sour and thunderstorm activity today the afternoon high not going to be all that warm maybe only 79 degrees a continuing slight chance of showers and thunderstorms this evening the fairly calm skies 44 the overnight low sunshine 87 on Saturday 83 sunshine Sunday back to 88 on Monday 83 Tuesday more sunshine 82 and sunshine Wednesday and more sunshine and 80 degrees Thursday looking pretty good get a little bit of unsettled weather out of the way today and tomorrow morning and then a good week ahead forget me not they've also got greeting cards helium balloons all types of occasions see them right downtown 173 South Main forget me not thanks for joining us here on a Friday I'm Eric Carpenter this is K C V L K C R K [BLANK_AUDIO]
