US Olympic Wins & Google Antitrust Decision | Afternoon Update | 8.5.24
I'm Georgia Howe with Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief John Bickley. It's Monday, August 5th, and this is your Morning Wire Afternoon Update. The Olympics continue in Paris today. As of this afternoon, the US has won over 75 medals, 20 of them gold. Daily Wire's senior editor Joel Needler has more. Simone Biles won silver in her final day of competition in the floor exercises, but was shut out on balance beam after falling during her routine. Still, the pint-sized powerhouse will end the Paris Games with four medals, three golds, and one silver. The US swim team wrapped up their final day of competition in the pool with a pair of gold medals and world records to boot. Long distance freestyler Bobby Fink delivered the first of two gold medals in the 1500-meter freestyle and a new record time. The men's four-by-100 medley relay team took the silver medal, which was the only time other than the 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympics that a US men's team has not taken the gold in that event. The Games concluded on another high for Team USA, as the women's medley relay team took the gold by a decisive margin and set another world record in the process. Debbie has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, but not before the storm claimed four people's lives. Three people lost their lives in accidents attributed to the storm, and one boy was killed when a tree fell on his mobile home. The storm system touched down on Florida's Gulf Coast early this morning, where dumping rain caused catastrophic flooding. At least 300,000 people have lost power in Florida. Debbie is expected to drop as much as two feet of rain in Georgia and South Carolina later this week. Google lost a massive antitrust case on Monday over its search engine monopoly, a federal judge ruled that the illegal monopoly was held in the two areas of search and text advertising. The judgment is the first of its kind in the internet age and could affect the way big tech companies do business. The case was brought by a bipartisan group of 38 attorneys general in the Department of Justice. A U.S. murderer who has evaded law enforcement for 20 years was found in Mexico working as a police officer. In 2005, Antonio Riano was featured on Fox's America's Most Wanted TV show for his alleged murder of an Ohio resident outside of a bar in December of 2004. Riano's arrest on Thursday puts an abrupt end to his somewhat ironic policing career. RFK Jr confessed on Sunday to leaving a dead bear cub in Central Park in 2014. In a three-minute video on ex Kennedy said he found the bear on the side of the road and ended up placing it in the park as a joke. "I was driving up really early by 7 and then a woman and a man in front of me hit a bear and killed it. So I pulled over and I picked up the bear and put him in the back of my van. So then I went walking and I had a bear in my car and then he went late and I realized I couldn't go home. I did go to the airport and I said let's go to the bear in Central Park and we'll make it look like he had to have a bite of his neck. Huntington Beach is pushing to be a parents' right to no city. Last month Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1955, which prohibits California school districts from having policies that require parents to be notified if their child identifies his transgender. Huntington Beach Mayor Gracie Vandermark told Fox 11 that she intends to introduce legislation to challenge AB 1955, which she believes undermines a parent's ability to communicate with their child on critical, long-term life-altering issues. The state of Ohio has legalized recreational marijuana sales starting tomorrow. The first round of certifications will be extended to almost 100 locations throughout the state. Last November, Ohio voters approved allowing adults over 21 to possess, purchase, and grow limited amounts of cannabis for personal use. And Aerosmith has officially stopped touring due to a vocal injury lead singer Stephen Tyler sustained last year. Band members announced on Friday that all remaining tour dates would be canceled with no plans to reschedule. The band shared in a statement, quote, "It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration became Aerosmith. Thanks to you, that spark caught flame and has been burning for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning and all of you are the reason we made rock and roll history." All right, there's your drive home updates this afternoon.
