(upbeat music) The race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris titans as Harris finalizes her pick for running mate and her husband admits to a past affair. Good Ranchers, American meat delivered. As Kamala Harris prepares to announce her running mate, the 2024 presidential race is tighter than ever. Here are the latest from the campaign trail is Daily Wire senior editor, Cabot Phillips. Hey, Cabot, so the big question on everyone's mind, who will Kamala Harris pick? What are we hearing? Well, we should have that pick within the next 24 hours. And it appears that she has narrowed her search to six men, including favorites, Governor Josh Shapiro and Andy Beshear and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, as well as a newcomer to the shortlist, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who has been gaining some momentum lately. The VP hosted each of the men for final interviews at her residence in DC on Sunday. As part of that search effort, Harris tapped controversial former Attorney General Eric Holder to vet the potential VPs and advise her on upsides and pitfalls for each. Now, throughout the weekend, we did see quite a bit of internal debate on the left, much of it focused on presumed front-runner Josh Shapiro. Supporters of the governor argued that he would help carry what is arguably the most important state on the map and has strong appeal to moderates and disinfective Republicans. But a number of critics have emerged pressuring Harris to pick someone else. Tell us about that pressure to move away from Shapiro. So for example, Bernie Sanders has come out in support of Tim Walz saying he'd be the better man to take on corporations. While Pennsylvania Senator John Federman reportedly relayed concerns to the Harris campaign, the Shapiro is quote, "excessively focused on personal ambitions." Then there's Sean Fain, the powerful union boss of the UAW, who's lobbying against Shapiro, saying others are stronger picks for organized labor. And to give you an idea more broadly of the infighting, a group of 50 progressive leaders from around the country signed a letter to the Harris campaign saying Shapiro would provide a quote, "unnecessary obstacle to winning over the left" and that he holds views quote, "indirect conflict with the party platform." And finally, and perhaps most notably, a significant chunk of the growing anti-Israel faction of the party have decried Shapiro's stance on the Warren Gaza. They are demanding Harris choose someone further left on that issue. So while he is the front runner and would likely help the campaign in Pennsylvania, there are real questions over how he would play with the party's base nationwide. - Now in recent days, we've also seen quite a bit of chatter about Doug Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris. And there was a major admission over the weekend. What did we see there? - Yeah, a big story bombshell report coming out over the weekend from the Daily Mail. It found that in 2009, second gentleman Doug Emhoff had an extramarital affair with a teacher working at his children's private elementary school. The woman became pregnant. And while she reportedly did not keep the baby, it's unclear whether she had an abortion or give the child up for adoption. According to that report, the incident resulted in the end of Emhoff's 17 year marriage. Emhoff, who met Harris a few years later before marrying in 2015, did issue a brief statement to CNN confirming the story, saying quote, "During my first marriage, "Kirsten and I went through some tough times "on account of my actions. "I took responsibility and in the years since, "we worked through things as a family "and have come out stronger on the other side." Now it's worth pointing out, critics were quick to call out what they view as hypocrisy from Emhoff, who has in recent years spoken out repeatedly against what he calls toxic masculinity. So we'll have to see what sort of impact it has on the race in the coming weeks, but definitely a big development for the Harris fan, for sure. Now before we go, there have been some interesting developments with regard to independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tell us about that. Well, throughout the last year, it seems like Kennedy would be the first major third party player since Ross Perot. He peaked back in December when he was averaging around 20 points nationally, but has just cratered in recent months, dropping to 10 points by the start of the summer, and at latest count now sits below five points nationally. All along though, the big question was which party he benefited more. When it was Biden versus Trump, it did appear more Democrats were going his way, and Trump tended to see his lead jump when RFK was included in polling. But it's interesting, since Harris took over the ticket, the opposite now appears true. In a number of recent polls this week, Harris gains one to three points on Trump when Kennedy is included on the ballot. Now it's worth noting, the moment the only battleground states where Kennedy has secured a spot on the ballot or Michigan and North Carolina, but there is a good chance he appears in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Nevada as well. But the numbers do seem to show that a real chunk of disillusioned Democrats who had been supported. Kennedy have now returned home as Harris coalesces the left space. Already tight race getting even tighter. Kevin, thanks for reporting. Anytime. (upbeat music) - To reduce the costs and headaches, smart businesses are graduating the NetSuite by Oracle. The Obama appointed judge ruled against the former president's claims that the DOJ's case against him amounts to political targeting. - Here to discuss Chutkin's ruling is Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce. So Tim, the charges related to January 6th are just one of several ongoing cases that Trump is dealing with. What's the latest with this one? - Yeah, well, this case returned to Chutkin's court on Friday after the Supreme Court ruled on Trump's immunity claims. Listeners will remember that the Supreme Court found that Trump's argument that he should be immune from prosecution over acts he took as president has legs. The court said presidents are immune for prosecution for acts that are part of the president's core constitutional powers. The court suggested charges could be brought for official acts that are outside the president's exclusive authority or for unofficial acts. This immunity argument took eight months to litigate. During that time, this January 6th case was left frozen. Chutkin appears to want to move quickly to make up for that delay. Also on Saturday, she set deadlines for court filings next week. She also scheduled a hearing to consider the future timeline of the case on August 16th. - So it sounds like Chutkin wants to push ahead pretty aggressively on this case. What was Trump's motion to dismiss it? What was the argument and why did Chutkin reject it? - Trump wanted to dismiss the case as political targeting. Trump's legal team cited stories from The New York Times and The Washington Post that, among other things, suggested that White House pressure had something to do with the charges brought against Trump. Chutkin wrote that she wasn't convinced by anonymously sourced news stories. She said, quote, "There is no indication "that President Biden ever expressed any such comments "to the Attorney General or the Justice Department, "much less that such comments actually resulted "in politically motivated action." She also said that Attorney General Merrick Garland's deliberate posture on this case actually suggests the opposite, that the charges Trump faces here were properly considered. Now it's worth noting that this case is being prosecuted by a special counsel, Jack Smith, who was recently barred by U.S. District Judge in Florida from prosecuting Trump in the classified documents case. That judge found that Smith had been improperly handed prosecutorial authority as a special counsel and that the documents case can't move forward until an authorized prosecutor takes it up. Smith has appealed that ruling to the 11th circuit, but if he loses there, it could impact this case in D.C. as well. Now what comes next for the J-6 case? Can we expect a resolution before the election? That's pretty unlikely at this point. The immunity case in the Supreme Court ate up too much time. And then there is the matter that Trump's charges still need to be sorted through to see if the Supreme Court's decision affects any of them. Trump has been charged with three conspiracy charges and obstruction of an official proceeding. Now the Supreme Court's decision means that if the actions on which any of those charges were based were part of Trump's core constitutional powers, they'll have to be dismissed. And then even if they're not, it's still unclear whether or not Trump can be tried for them and sorting all this out will likely take some time. - So Trump may still need to go to trial, but at the very least it won't be until after the election. - Yeah. - Tim, thanks for reporting. - Thanks for having me. (upbeat music) - At a Taylor Swift themed dance class in Southport near Liverpool last week, a young man with a knife killed three girls ages five to nine and injured many other children. Since Friday, rioters protesting lax immigration policies took the streets of Northern England, injuring police officers, burning a police station and targeting a mosque. They also scuffled with immigrant and left-wing counter protesters. - Joining us to discuss is Laura Solzer, a Franco-American journalist who has observed the dramatic rise of violence since 2015 in the UK and France. Laura, thank you so much for coming on. So give us some context. What kinds of incidents have we seen, particularly with these series of stabbings? - Well, the most shocking and savage incident for me as a French citizen was in July 16, when an old Catholic priest saying the mass in Normandy was slaughtered by two radical Muslims. And since then, the list of horrors is long and on the rise. It was not the first attack with a knife, but this time it was direct to secretion of Christianity. So since 14 and 15 and friends and England in particular, there has been a huge outbreak of knife attacks. Official data are deliberately blurry and vague on the profile of the perpetrators. But when the most part of the assailants scream a lot about before brandishing a knife, it plays very little doubt about their origin and motivations. Based only on the statistics recorded by the library of the commons last year, there were 50,500 incidents in England and Wales. The attack in Southport was especially horrific because the prayer were kids, although it was not the first time children have been targeted. But this time the steam, this generated has made the puck explode. - Yeah, it certainly seems like it. Now, as to these protests and how they are connected to the stabbing, first, who are these protesters and rioters? - It seems that the poor white population of Manchester, Liverpool, Belfast cannot contain the anger. They're fed up with being labeled racist, fascist, extremist and bad guys. But there are some among them who are Uligan or neo-Nazi. So there are extremists in their ranks, but we don't know yet if it was organized by a network or a party such as the League of Defense of England. - Now, a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested for the murder his family migrated from Rwanda to the UK. What do we know about him? - We don't know much except that he was born a UK citizen, of course, and that in Rwanda, they are Christians. But you know, blacks of African origin and Muslims live in the same ghettos. So now it's possible that the suspect might have been radicalized or it might have wanted to attract attention or also it could be a simple copycat of similar murders. - All right, so still a lot unknown there. We've seen reports that in Manchester, a so-called Muslim patrol was mobilized to oppose the anti-immigrant's protests. Who have these rioters been facing off against in the streets? - They have very, very close ties to Hamas, totally pro-Palestinian. - They are shot in Al-Aghang Bar and they are supported by the usual suspects of so-called anti-racist and human rights movement. And they were very violent as well in those last three days. A few days ago, an old couple was stabbed to death by a Palestinian near Tel Aviv. And Western Europe, particularly the UK and France, is the continuation of that conflict. It's a real displacement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Because since their independence, the former colonies, the big ones, have massively migrated to France and the UK. And England has the most radical mosque and pictures in the Western world. The more and more radicalized Islamist population has a rapid demographic growth. And a lot of them want to impose Quranic laws on a population of origin, which shares very different values and traditions. And it will not stop there. - Very troubling reports coming out of the UK about this escalation on multiple fronts. Laura, thank you so much for coming on. - You're very welcome, John. - Thanks for waking up with us. We'll be back later this afternoon with more news you need to know. (upbeat music) (clicks)
