(upbeat music) Kamala Harris launches her first campaign ad while Donald Trump sharpens his message against his newly appointed opponent. Just like she destroyed San Francisco, she will destroy our entire country. I'm Georgia Howe, and John is still on vacation. It's Friday, July 26th, and this is Morning Wire. (upbeat music) As the newly anointed Democratic presidential nominee, now Kamala Harris needs to distance herself from the crisis at the Southern border, but a bipartisan group of congressmen is saying, not so fast. Since the borders are Harris has taken over, there has been nearly 8 million illegal encounters at the Southern border, and nearly 2 million known godaways. That's a total of almost 10 million people that have entered our country. And Paris will put its iconic landmarks on display today for the Olympic opening ceremonies, but not everyone in the city of light is happy about hosting the games. Thanks for waking up with Morning Wire. Stay tuned, we have the news you need to know. (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Hey guys, Producer Brandon here. (upbeat music) - With President Joe Biden officially out of the race, the battle between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is underway, here to break down the state of the race amid a wild week in Washington is daily wire senior editor, Cabot Phillips. So, Cabot, let's start off with the massive protests that consumed DC ahead of Prime Minister Netanyahu's address to Congress. - Yeah, a number of arrests were made this week as thousands of pro-Humas demonstrators vandalized monuments, assaulted police officers, and tore down and burned American flags. Those riots did draw rare consensus between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The VP called them despicable and condemned, quote, any individuals associating with the brutal terrorist organization, Hamas. Trump went a step further, calling for those who burned the flag to face at least a year in jail. But the most noteworthy comments came from White House national security advisor, John Kirby. - We do know that Iran has been funding and encouraging some of the protest activity here in the United States. - Now, we're starting to get a better idea of the Harris campaign's strategy. What have we learned so far? - Well, as polling showed President Biden being crushed in states like Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia, his campaign really shifted almost entirely to Rust Belt states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. That left him an extremely narrow path to victory. But the Harris campaign has expressed confidence that they can take back some of those Sun Belt states. New swing state polling this week from Emerson has the VP still trailing Trump in Georgia and Arizona, but by a slimmer margin in Biden. In Georgia, for example, she's only down two points. The Harris campaign says the state's large population of black voters will push them over the finish line there. She'll visit the state next week for a rally while her campaign manager will appear for a separate event in Arizona. We're also getting our first look at the message Harris will be putting on airwaves in the coming months. Here's her first TV ad released Thursday. - There are some people who think we should be a country of chaos, a fear of hate. But us, we choose freedom. - That song in the background was "Freedom" by Beyonce. It's worth noting the Harris campaign has already touted a number of celebrity endorsements as part of an apparent effort to appeal to younger voters who famously have fallen away from the party under President Biden. For example, here's Harris this week appearing on the controversial, but popular TV show, RuPaul's Drag Race. - Each day, we are seeing our rights and freedoms under attack, including the right of everyone to be who they are, love who they love openly and with pride. - For their part, the Trump campaign responded with this ad featuring a montage of Harris endorsing far left positions. - You're considered the most liberal United States Senator. - We're not gonna treat people who are undocumented across the border as criminal polish ice. - Yeah. - Is that a position that you agree with? - We need to probably think about starting from scratch. - That ad went on to show moments of Harris endorsing the elimination of all private healthcare plans, mandatory gun buyback programs, free healthcare for legal immigrants and decriminalizing illegal border crossings. So their argument is simple. Kamala Harris is a far left radical, more in line with Bernie Sanders and AOC than Joe Biden. - Now, we have seen some really interesting trends in the latest polling. Is this shaping up to be a closer race than it was previously? - Yeah, I mean, there's no question VP Harris is polling better than President Biden was. For example, yesterday's New York Times Sienna poll considered the gold standard of Washington, showed Trump ahead by one point nationally and two among registered voters. Their previous poll had Trump ahead six nationally and nine with registered voters. Again, the Trump team says that bump is part of the expected Harris honeymoon that will subside as the election progresses. And it's interesting, both candidates are experiencing a significant bump in favorability ratings as well. For her part, VP Harris ticked up to 46%. That is well above the mid 30s where she's covered for the last two years. And President Trump's favorability rating has climbed to 48%. That's actually his highest mark in any New York Times poll since 2016. And that's not an outlier, both Quinnipiac and ABC also this week found Trump with his highest favorability rating on record. So yes, VP Harris is experiencing a bump post Biden dropout but so is Donald Trump. Now we'll have to wait and see which is more sustainable as we're now in just 102 days away from election day. - Yeah, but who's counting? - Right. - Kevin, thanks for reporting. - Anytime. Since 1974, Saudi Arabia has sold oil solely in US dollars which was paramount to the dollar's strength and stability. But not anymore. The House of Representatives voted on Thursday to condemn Vice President Kamala Harris's handling of the Southern border. The 220 eyes included six Democrats and a rebuke to their party's newly minted presumptive nominee. Here to discuss the vote as well as what Harris's role in the border really has been under the Biden administration is daily wire contributor David Marcus. So David, as to the vote yesterday, what exactly was the resolution? - Morning, Georgia. The vote itself was a general condemnation of Harris's role in overseeing the Southern border. And it's very significant that even just six Democrats would vote in favor of it because right now the Harris campaign and the Democrats in general, with a little help from the media, are desperately trying to distance the vice president from what most Americans view as a major crisis. I don't think we can look at this as any broader rebuke of Harris's candidacy by the six Democrats, but it is a rebuke of the Biden administration's approach to the border writ large. And that in and of itself is pretty remarkable. It really speaks to the fact that the party feels vulnerable on this issue as frankly does the entire effort to divorce Harris from the border. If Democrats thought Americans supported Biden's border policies, they wouldn't mind her being called their czar. - So this is now a big debate in the race as to whether she ever even held that role at all. Democrats claim that Republicans completely made it up. So what is the truth there? Was Kamala Harris the borders are? - She wasn't literally crowned as such by the patriarch in St. Petersburg. Border czar is not an actual office. It's more a description of duties. But she's certainly been referred to widely as borders are for years now. And back in 2021, the liberal media regularly referred to her as the point person for the border as the Washington Free Beacon showed with a super cut. Let's hear a bit of that. - She is now the point person on immigration. - Vice President Harris is now the Biden administration's point person. - To oversee his administration's efforts to stem the flow of migrants. - Kamala Harris, the point person on immigration. - The point person and the effort to stop the flow of migrants. - Kamala Harris will lead the response to the border challenge. - In fairness to Harris, even at the time, she didn't like the term borders are and insisted that her purview was limited to root causes in Mexico and Central America, or put another way why so many people were leaving to illegally enter America. But even if we accept that, she's provided no evidence that in the last three and a half years, she's done anything to improve root causes. Her position now seems to be that she never had anything to do with the border, so go yell at Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas about it, but that just is inaccurate. - Now, is this an effort on Harris's behalf to put some space between herself and the record of the Biden administration? And if so, how difficult is that going to be given that she currently is Biden's Vice President? - It's interesting, there were concrete advantages to choosing Harris in terms of continuity, as well as ease of access to the millions of dollars that the Biden-Harris campaign has already raised, but this might be a downside. Another candidate, one of the governors or senators, would be in a position on almost any issue to say, you know what, I disagree a bit with how Biden has handled X, Y, or Z. That's hard for Harris to do while she is serving in the vice presidency at the pleasure of President Joe Biden. She could be locked into some uncomfortable positions. - Now, we heard some criticism from an unexpected corner earlier this week. What did Black Lives Matter have to say about the Harris nomination? - BLM took to X with a complaint that sounds an awful lot like the criticisms Republicans have launched over Harris being anointed the nominee without receiving so much as one vote in one primary. The group refers to 2,000 DNC party bosses in a smoke-filled room who are making this decision. Now, in fairness, these days, it's more likely a vape-filled room, but this is another potential weakness for Harris and shows that there's work to do to achieve party unity going into next month's convention in Chicago. - Well, as you reported earlier this week, David, the media is really working overtime to help her get that unity going forward. - Absolutely. - David, thanks for reporting. - Thanks for having me. - The opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris will take place this afternoon. It promises to be a magnificent event, but the two-week event does come with some criticisms. Joining us now is French and American bi-national correspondent Laura Solzer. Laura, tell us what can we expect from the Olympics in Paris? - Hi, Georgia, and thank you for having me. Oh, aesthetically, this opening ceremony promises to be gorgeous. Teams from all around the world are going to cruise along the river Seine, passing under the most famous bridges of the capital, along historical monuments such the Arc of Triumph, the Eiffel Tower, and Notre Dame. And we have to mention that this will be the very first time in the history of the Olympics that they take place inside a city, not in a stadium. - Wow. Now, does the location being inside the city proper pose more safety risks? - As far as a terrorist attack of big dimension, it is always a risk during any Olympic games. And recently, we've had threats from Hamas. The far, far left and France demanded that the Israeli team be excluded. There are rumors about the role of Russia in potential attack because France supports Ukraine. But today, Paris has been literally blocked and the traffic patterns redesigned with fences, cameras, and only those with a pass will be able to enter it. France is bringing 80,000 police officers, soldiers, private company guards, and it's nearly three times the amount of the London summer games in 2012. And for the first time, American police departments are sending officers and bomb sniffing dogs. European countries as well, and it's a very nice sign of solidarity. - Now, these types of events, as much as they bring economic activity, they're also a burden to residents. How are people in France reacting to having the games there this summer? - Well, I'm a Parisian, so my family is still there. And they're very irritated. They have spent the last two or three years battling traffic in their cars because of construction. And also because it's their natural mentality. They are critical, but it has been very noisy too. However, they also know that major new infrastructure has been created and will be used after the game such as a direct and super quick line between Rociciao, the Gold Airport, and the center of the capital. - So there's been some upheaval due to construction, but also we've seen a lot of disarray when it comes to French politics. Can you explain to our listeners what the political environment is there right now? - To summarize, President Macron has lost his majority. A new cabinet is impossible to form because none of the three major factions have a majority in the assembly. Still, the first party in France with over 33% of votes is the national rally, the real right, which we could compare with the America first movement, but nobody wants to form an alliance with them because they are depicted as fascist, like the Magga supporters are here. I don't think, however, that politics would impact the Olympics per se. - All right, well, Lara, thank you so much for coming on. You're very welcome. - Thanks for waking up with us.
