And this is your Morning Wire afternoon update. Embattled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheetell has stepped down. Daily Wire reporter Tim Pierce has the latest. - Her decision comes after former President Trump was nearly assassinated on July 13th in what she called the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades. While the former President was able to walk away from the incident, firefighter Corey Comparator was tragically killed by the gunfire while protecting his family. Yesterday Cheetell testified before the House Oversight Committee and took full responsibility, though initially maintained that she would not step down. It's worth noting that President Biden did not fire her or ask for her resignation. Here's Oversight Committee member Texas Representative Pat Fallon reacting to her resignation. - I wish she had been fired because I mean, we need to change the culture of that organization. This was a catastrophic failure to protect the former President and quite frankly, also the leading candidate to be the next President. I recreated the shooting in Savoy, Texas on Saturday with a AR and 15 out of the 16 shots were kill shots. So it is an absolute miracle President Trump is alive today. - As a result of the attempt on President Trump's life, Homeland Security's Inspector General has launched an investigation into the incident and the House Homeland Security Committee held a hearing today as well. - President Biden, who was seen today for the first time since July 17th, will speak to the American people on Wednesday night. A post on his official presidential account reads, "I will address the nation from the Oval Office on what lies ahead and how I will finish the job for the American people." While many Americans have questioned Biden's absence and health, he did dial in by phone to a Harris event at what is now her campaign headquarters last night. - The name has changed the top of the ticket. The mission hasn't changed at all. - Biden is also set to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday who arrived yesterday, though with no greeting from Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris will not be in attendance for Netanyahu's congressional address tomorrow as she ramps up her campaign, here with more as daily wire contributor Matt Sinofsky. - Last night, Vice President Harris officially became the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party after securing over half of the party's delegates. That effectively clinches the nomination, barring a major shakeup at the Democratic National Convention next month. So far, Harris has taken her spot as the party's front runner and stride. She secured valuable endorsements from Top House and Senate Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer earlier today, adding to her already lengthy list of supporters. And more importantly, she's been backed by Democratic donors, already surpassing the $100 million mark. She's now reportedly vetting possible running mates with the help of former Attorney General Eric Holder and held her first independent campaign rally in Milwaukee this afternoon. - White House press secretary, Kareem Jean-Pierre, appeared on the view today in her first appearance since President Biden withdrew his election bid. Jean-Pierre, who hasn't held a press conference since July 15th, has been the subject of much scrutiny over Biden's health and transparency within his administration. When asked the obvious question about the president deciding not to run for election and whether he's healthy enough to finish his term, Jean-Pierre said the following. - I think that's ridiculous, seriously. What I will say is like a president decided to not run for reelection. That's it. That's all he decided on. We have so much more work to do and he understands that he's going to speak to this in about 24 hours or so and he'll lay that out. But this president is ready to continue to lead this country in a historic way. - This episode is brought to you by ZBiotics. That's zbiotics.com/wire. - Elon Musk has vowed to kill the woke mind virus after he says his son was metaphorically killed by it. Musk's son Xavier, who now goes by Vivian, attended progressive Los Angeles private school crossroads and was given puberty blockers during the pandemic. In a conversation with Daily Wire's Jordan Peterson, Musk explained how he was tricked into agreeing to what he described as sterilization drugs. - I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys, Xavier. This was before I had really any understanding of what was going on and we had COVID going on and so there was a lot of confusion. You know, I was told I would get, you know, Xavier and Mike commit suicide. The reason it's called dead naming is because your son is dead. So my son's Xavier is dead, killed by the woke mind virus. I vowed to destroy the woke mind virus after that. And we're making some progress. - New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez agreed today to resign from his seat in Congress after being convicted in a bribery scheme. He'll step down on August 20th, but still remains to appeal the conviction following his sentencing in October. Delta Airlines is under a federal investigation as it continues to face technical issues following last week's global cyber outage. All airlines have since returned to normalcy except Delta, which continues to delay and cancel flights. According to Axios, Delta canceled or delayed 76% of its flights yesterday. In a post on X, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said his department, quote, "has opened an investigation into Delta Airlines to ensure the airline is following the law and taking care of its passengers. The investigation will focus on ensuring customers were legally and adequately compensated for their travel disruptions." A new survey on the impacts of California's minimum wage hike shows trouble for restaurants and their employees in the state. Daily Wire Senior Editor Ash Short has the latest. In the first of its kind survey, the Employment Policies Institute asked nearly 200 restaurants who employed tens of thousands of workers how they've weathered the change. The survey found that 98% of eateries have raised prices, 89% of them have cut hours for their employees and limited overtime while 70% have laid off staff. 67% of survey participants say the new race to California's minimum wage will cost their restaurant at least $100,000 per location every year, while around 25% say it will cost $200,000. And home prices hit a new record high in June with the median sale price rising to $427,000. That's the highest ever topping May's record by over $10,000. Home buying affordability fell to its lowest level in decades last fall and has stayed there ever since. Economists attribute the high prices to bidding wars. Last month, over a third of homes sold for higher than their listed price. Median home prices are now over seven times higher than the median American salary.
