[Music] And away we go! Hello again friends and welcome to another edition of Southern Fairways Radio Show presented by McConnell Automotive the number one GMC dealer in the state of Alabama. They're located just east of I-65 on Dolphin Street in Mobile. You can certainly check them out online at McConnellautomotive.com. We're broadcasting live today from our Shrickson Studios right here in Lower Alabama. I am your host Randy Bergen joined by War Eagle TV's Doug Holton. Doug, how you doing my man? I know you're an Auburn fan. S-E-C. You know that by now. By now I didn't know that. Thus the War Eagle TV. But it's an exciting time of year, right? It really is. We're getting close here. I think we're actually about seven days away from tow meeting leather. We'll tell you who's going to kick off the season. But S-E-C is about two weeks away and we'll tell you we've been waiting for it. It's every year you kind of get that anticipation. All right, we're ready. We're ready. High school kicks off on Thursday night this week. So it's that time of the year. Yeah, football is here. I like to take a little break in the summer. I see all those countdowns with 100 days and 90 days. I'm like, oh, let's wait a little while. But now you're getting to the point, Randy, where everybody's getting excited and talking about who's going to do what and we'll do a little bit of that today. We are certainly going to do that. We've got a lot to get into today. There's absolutely no question about it. Coming up in our next segment, former LSU Tigers golf coach and former South Alabama golf coach. He's now the director of instruction at Steelwood Country Club. And Locksley and the founder of Jonesy Golf Total Performance Coaching. Greg Jones is going to be on with us. We'll talk about the code. You want to play butter golf? He's got a code for you. Yes, you do. I'm going to go see Greg this week. There you go. But he's really, really good. You won't want to miss that segment coming up. Maybe how to practice and we'll talk to football with him as well. So Greg is one of the, he's certainly good at what he does. He's got it going out there, Steelwood now. I think got a nice place, a nice new facility, a nice practice screen that they read in. Now you've been out there and you've, have you, have you utilized the facilities? Not officially, but I have been out there and seen, actually I was out there when they were just starting to redo it. And I haven't been out there to see the finished product yet, but I know it's really nice. Yeah. On the other side of the range from where people hit balls. Right, right, right. Now I need to get out there and see him for sure as well. But we'll talk with him coming up in our next segment. You won't want to miss that. At the bottom of the hour, we'll talk a little more golf. We'll hear from world number one, Scotty Scheffer on winning a gold. Congratulations to him. Congratulations to Lydia Ko as well. And I'm going to tell you, although these guys are professional, if you didn't get just a little choked up when you watched their interviews. Hey, it's pretty special winning a gold for your country. No question about it. We saw that a number of times in the last couple of weeks in the Olympics and golf was no exception. But, you know, I was really happy to see that, Randy, in the Olympics. You didn't see a lot of controversy that we've seen in your past, but a lot of people draping themselves in the American flag, which was nice to see. Well, it certainly was, as you said, no question about it for sure. Well, so here from him on the year-long race to the FedEx Cup, what's his real thoughts about that? Does that title make sense? He's got his opinion on it. That's a great question. Because it really comes down to one tournament, so you'll hear from him. We've talked about that in the past, how some of the playoff scenarios, or at least I have, how that really doesn't make a lot of sense. And they maybe should give some thought to redo in that. Yeah. Well, we'll get his thoughts on it for sure. We're also going to be talking a lot of college football only days away from the opening kickoff, as we mentioned. And then we'll wrap up the hour. We'll talk a little baseball get you caught up on the standings in the Major League Baseball. We'll get a little fishing report, and then we'll get into a little more golf and football. Great news. We mentioned it just a little while ago in the prep sports report. Boom. No longer. Boom State Kitchen. No longer at the fort. She's at the Piggy Wiggly Inn. Fair hoping that food court, we couldn't be more excited for her. Maybe we can throw out a couple of dishes that she'll have as she gets prepared for a grand opening coming up in just a couple of days as well. Yeah. So not quite yet, but we're getting ready for it. Monday. Monday is supposed to be the official day that she opens up, so she's been working hard to get there, and we're excited for her for sure. But if you're listening to us, we've heard for years now, go to the fort, there is no need. There is no need. She is not there. That's right. Go to Fair Hope. It's a beautiful place to visit. Hey, the PGA Tour playoffs are underway. Who wins the St. Jude with only 70 players and who advances the top 50 to play at the BMW Championship in Colorado? We'll have our pick for who wins the championship. Right now, it's a pretty good race going on. If you've been watching any of it, it has been fun to watch for sure. We'll get you caught up on the leaderboards there, but let's welcome in. Sweet swinging, Bobby Hall, PGA Teaching Professional, and the Director of Golf at Quackery Golf Club in Fair Hope, Alabama. Bobby, how you doing, man? Hey, thank you for having me on. I know he's hearing you and Coach. Coach, talk about school startbacks with kids. Don't be like Bobby in late class, but be on time. And he comes there with two phones, not one. Yeah, I always have two phones. I'm like that. Well, I thought you were bringing in a new compadre. Well, he was a little too hyper-ad to take him home. Okay. Well, I just got him a new dog. I got a new dog. What'd you get? I got an Australian Shepherd. Really? Yeah. He's great. He gets me up in the morning, licks my face every day, so I'm clean-shaking. Does he chase people around the range or what? Well, he jumps on everybody. He's so excited to be out there, so we're calling golf dog, and he's doing great. He's a lot of fun. Golf dog. And his name is? Pedro. Pedro. No, not Pedro. Just Pedro. Pedro, which is Spanish for a dog. Real original. And he can chase your- If I had a cat, his name would be Got-Dosa. He can get your ball and put it back in the fairway. Oh, yeah, man. He's good. He chases golf balls and tennis balls and all that. He's a pretty dog, so I'm going to get to see him yesterday. Yeah, so. And so excited for you. I got him to chase geese at the golf course, but we don't have any geese anymore, so. How did you do that, dude? Well, we won't talk about that. But thanks for having me on. It's a great day. Thank you for having me on. There you go. I know you've got a tip for us coming up here in just a few moments for sure. But I do want to thank some of our great sponsors of the show. I want to thank McConnell Automotive, Shrixon Golf, Boojo's Cajun Girl, Matt couldn't be here today. He will be with us next week. Glenn Lays Golf Club in Foley, Ben Murphy, Roofing, Eastern Shore, Toyota, and Hyundai. Thanks to craft farms, golf course and golf shores. I'm telling you, it's the only Arnold Palmer signature design course in Alabama. You've got to go by there and play as a matter of fact, that's where Southern Fairways Golf Tour will be on September the 15th as we start to wrap up our season. And don't forget about Peninsula. It is a fantastic golf course over there, Anthony Vaughn does a great job. Also, thanks to Lisa Johnson-Rilter, Fair Hope GolfWorks, JTP Rock and Master Club Fitter Avery Reed. Now, you won't play better golf set up an appointment today with those guys. They can certainly get you taken care of. They're doing a great job over there. A lot of folks, Bobby, I know JT worked with you for a little bit before he took on this venture as well. Right. Yeah, JT and Avery do a great job. In fact, speaking about some of their services, we have one of our customers accidentally on purpose break a wedge and Avery fixed it for him, had him back in play, you know, within 30, 40 minutes, had it re-shafted and re-gripped. So they do a great job over there, plus the fitting and Avery's so well versed in that. So yeah, go by and see them. I encourage a lot of folks that come out to Quill Creek. We don't have a lot of golf clubs due to the internet and just sales as hard to stock your pro shop and keep it completely full. So fitting is still the best way to go. You have something that fits your length, your lie angle, your shaft flex, which Avery's really good at and, you know, lessons with JT, they got it all going on. So go by and see them at golf horse. And Bobby, of course, you do lessons there at Quill Creek along with your assistant pro John Michael. Yeah, we do a lot of lessons, just had some juniors out this morning. I've got a young lady Ivy that's working out to be on the Fairhold High School Girls team. She's doing a great job and, yeah, and John Michael's really wrapped up in a lot of junior golf lessons. So yeah, come see us. We'll certainly help you. We've got outdoor chipping facility and driving range. So thank you. Looking forward to talking to Greg Jones coming on. You know, I was listening right when he came on there about Greg coming on when I was an assistant pro at Lake Forest. Greg was playing Jimmy Green Jr. two of us when I first met Greg. He was still in high school. He hadn't gone off to college yet. Wow. Him and we miss his daddy, George, but George was a great fellow. His dad was real instrumental in getting Greg in the golf. So look forward to talking to Greg at the bottom of the hour. It'll be fun. He's got the code. He has got the code, Doug. There's no question about it. And I'm going to get the code, but it's a five digit code. While we're talking golf, I wanted to mention and say congratulations to Brendan Valdez. Of Auburn who got beat yesterday in the quarters, but a great tournament in the US amateur. So congrats to Brendan and the four guys that played up there from Auburn. Yeah, we're going to talk a little bit about the US amateur and who's left as they'll play the, I think they'll play in the semifinals today and they'll play the finals 36 holes tomorrow. So we just caught up on that. The ladies are playing over in Scotland. So all that coming up. Did you, did you see Matt Coocher as he apologized for refusing to finish last week? Did you see any of that? Bobby, I know you were tied up. So you couldn't. I didn't hear his comments. I heard the story. I didn't, I followed the Greensboro open, of course, because that's where I grew up. Sure. And watched the tournament at Segefield. But I did see that where the grounds crew had to come out and do the course just for Matt to finish, right? Yeah, I think you played a total of six minutes. Yep. One putt. Exactly. Exactly. All right. Hey, let's take a quick time out. When we come back, we'll be talking with Greg Jones of Jonesy Golf. You won't want to miss it. It happens right here on Southern Fairways. Hey, get her done. You know this is, this is Larry the capable guy, and you know who you're listening to? That's right. Randy Bergen on Southern Fairways Radio Show. And if you're not listening to him, you're a communist. These boys are good. That's right. You're a communist. Hey, welcome back to Southern Fairways Sports Radio. Glad to have you on board with us, I am Randy Bergen joined by War Eagle TVs, Doug Holton, and Sweet Swinging, Bobby Hall, the director of golf at Quill Creek Golf Club in beautiful Fair Hope, Alabama, the new home for Boomstike Kitchen. I got to keep plugging it, okay? I got to keep plugging it. I want you to go see Boom down at the Piglet Wiggly in Fair Hope. She is no longer at the fort, so go by and see her. But guys, it's time to go to our Shrickson guest line and welcome in, former South Alabama Golf Coach, former LSU Tigers Golf Coach. Now he's the director of instruction at Stillwood Country Club in Locksley and he's the founder of Jonesy Golf. Total performance coaching, our good friend Greg Jones. Jonesy, how you doing, brother? I'm doing good. Doing good. How about you guys? We are doing fabulous. We're doing fabulous. Glad to have you on board with us today. A lot to get into. I think one of the big things, and you and I've talked about it quite a bit, is the code. And I want to just dive right into it because I want to talk a little golf with you, and if we've got time, we're going to talk a little football as well. So a lot to get into in a short segment here. But let's dive right into it. Explain what the code means and how do we get the code. Well, so I guess if I were to write a book, the title of that book would be Mastering the Code to Unlocking Your Lowest Scores Consistently. And a lot of, you know, I get that question a lot, "Well, what's the code? What's the code?" Where there is no one code. There's your code. There's Doug's code. There's code. There's my code. Tiger has a code. It's how you do it. There's your code. And my job as a golf coach is to teach players how they do things like, "How do you hit it high? How do you hit it low? How do you hit fairway bunker shots? How do you make sure you strike it clean in the short game area so you can control the distance?" You don't have to know how Tiger or Scottish Sheppler or Xander Schopley. You don't have to know how they do it. You just have to know how you do it. So basically, the code is kind of a template for identifying how you go about playing the game. Because, hey, when the pressure's on and it's number 16 and you've got a one-shot lead, you've got to know how you get it in the fairway and how you hit the green and how you make the putt and how you hit chip shots. So that's the code. There is no one code. Everybody has their own code. And it's my job is to help each player identify how they play the game so they can make great decisions. Greg, Doug Holton, how are you doing? Doing great. Hey, I was just one of the interesting thoughts there with all the technology we have today and people grooming their swings and everybody almost looks the same. When you say there's a different code for everybody, is that something in their swing? Is it something mental or what exactly are we talking about there? Well, it's both and it's like, you know, I said, you know, jealousy golf, total performance coaching. The performance is more than just swing. And a quick story. This is kind of like what I tell my students or my new clients or whatever. Look, I'm 59 years old. I've been playing this game my whole life and every day I work on my swing, okay? But I have to have a game. I've got to be able to do all the other things. And so like I said, like you've got to know how you hit fairway bunker shots. But when it comes down to just the plain old golf swing, everybody does it differently, but they arrive at impact, you know, the great players arrive at impact at pretty much the same position. So it's my job to help them identify in their swing what makes them hit it good and to simplify things. I mean, I've over learned the swing backwards and forwards, upside down, standing on your head, the golf machine, Gardner Dickinson, Maco, Grady, David, Ledbetter, all of them. And, you know, I've over learned it, but basically the swing comes down to three things. There's only three things that really happen in the swings. We have a pivot, the arms elevate, and the hands hinge. And if you put those three to music, it makes a pretty good golf swing. And so it doesn't matter what part of what you're working on, you're working in one of those three areas. If it's either the body, the arms, or the hands. And so I try to help every individual player identify what makes them hit it good and how do they correct their big miss. I got to tell you, Greg, if you put all that to music with my swing, it is a... The record would be skipping. Well, you know, my goodness. Well, here's the thing. You give me somebody that's got average mechanics, but great rhythm, that guy can play. You can take a great swinger with great mechanics and poor rhythm, and he's going to have a tough day. And so at the end of the day, it's the music, it's the tempo, it's the rhythm, and the balance. It's kind of like the glue to the swing. And for those who don't know, the golf swing is actually a three-beat motion. It's a one and two, or a one, two, three. It's a one, two, three. And so we know this from photography from Mr. John Novicell, who is a tour photographer back in the day, and took the sequence photos that we've seen so many of over the years. And he determined that the downswing was three times faster than the backswing with all the great players. And so we now know that the golf swing is a three-beat motion. And then once you know what your tempo is, it could be fast, medium, or slow, then you can kind of sing the same song all day, Randy. So you just kind of sing the same song all day, the pom-poms. It'll make you a better dancer, too. Well, there you go. Well, I've got that kind of rhythm for sure, but what's going on up in my head, Bobby, you get to play with me quite a bit, and you know, there's a lot of stern up there. Hey, we're visiting with the director of instruction at Stillwood Country Club, Greg Jones with Jonesy Golf. Bobby. Hey, Greg, good to have you on. Hey, Bobby. Hey, good to hear from you, and always good to hear your voice. And you know, you're right, you and I and many of us that were students of the golf swing, we overanalyze things, but we've learned so much from it. And then we know as teachers, how do we simplify? I think everybody wants, they come to you and they say, "I want to be more repetitive. I want to be more consistent." And so what Greg's talking about in his code is simplifying that student what he can and cannot do. Some players like to play it further back in their stance, and we tell him, "You got it too far back. You need to move it forward." I don't recognize those things. And sometimes it just comes down to fundamentals. But Greg is like, "Where are your misses?" I was talking to Bill Prentice who plays at the Quell Creek and Bill was telling me the other day. He says, "I get under pressure at the end of the round. I'm playing really good. I've got one or two holes to play and I've hit the big slice with the driver. What am I doing wrong?" So he has a mental disconnect. And so we try to recognize those issues and help that person through their performance because we know, as Greg said, what the other players are doing. We see the planes. I mean, you go to Ray Schusler and all the good teachers in the area, they've got you on the video machine. They can tell you what plane is all about. But identifying what Doug Holton does and what Randy Bergen does and then simplifying those moves to help you is a great aspect. So congratulations to you on being at Steelwood and I know a lot of people come to see you. You've done a great job with all the young students and college kids that are going off to play. And the other thing, Greg, people don't know, he had a handbook while in college so the players could analyze their game at the end of the swing. Do you still use that, Greg, where your notes down, where your misses are and so on and so forth? I do. I mean, you can get really fancy. You know, Decade has a great system out there. It's kind of pricey. But hey, it's good enough for about 500 universities and Bryson de Champo. So it's really fancy. But I asked my players, you know, just give me some simple steps. I just want to know some fairways. I want to know screen. I want to know your up and downs and give me your putts. And let's just find out, help me help you if I don't know who you are and if you don't know what you produced, then how can we know where to attack? And so, you know, if you're weak driving the ball, if you're only hitting the five fairways around, well, we've got to figure out a way to get more fairways and whether it's a three wood or two iron or identifying your shot pattern. And I think, you know, back to swinging a little bit is, you know, I think I think a lot of young players, college players, maybe even young professionals have this expectation of perfection that doesn't exist. You know, it just doesn't exist. And so what we really want out of your swing is predictability, is what can you predict that it'll do? Well, we need to see some performance that so that we can choose great start lines, tick targets and things like that. So if we don't have stats, we don't have some performance data, how do we know where to shave shots? And here's an example I give, I coach John Humphrey's at LSU, he was an All-American. He turned pro and went and played in this first 54 hole pro tournament, shot 14 under and got beat by five. And I said, John, you just shot 14 under for three rounds and you got beat by five, where are you going to find five shots? And so we got to dig in. And maybe you need to make another 30 footer, maybe you need to make another birdie with a forearm, maybe you got to get better out of fairway bunkers or whatever it is. But if we don't have some data, then we really don't know where to attack. That's good stuff right there. We're visiting with Greg Jones, Jonesy Golf Total Performance Coaching. Greg got you for about another minute and a half here. Real quick, folks want to learn about the code, they want some teaching from you, how do they do that? Well, I have a website, JonesyGolf.com, J-O-N-E-S-I-E Golf, JonesyGolf.com. You can call me directly, I give myself phone to everybody, my players send me swings and videos all the time, 2-5-1-4-0-4, 98-44, or you can call a steelwood pro shop and they'll connect you to me. I also have an Instagram page and a couple Facebook pages out there as well. There you go. In the final 60 seconds that we got, let's turn and talk a little football. We're just weeks away from SEC football. What's Alabama going to do this year? How do you feel about Alabama? How do you feel about Auburn? You know, it's so hard to tell. I do have a lot of confidence in killing the board. I have a lot of confidence in an experienced quarterback who's mature and leadership and you've got a Malachai Morro on the back end of the defense, sleep at defense. I think they're going to be sound, I think they're going to be fine. I think what's the most interesting thing about the SEC this year is what Texas and Oklahoma are going to bring to the table. Auburn, I heard somebody on radio say that Peyton Thorne is probably going to be the most improved player in the conference this year and you just got to know that Hugh Freeze has got some offense dialed up. Between he and Lake Kent at Blaine Kiffin, they're going to dial up some points. They're going to score and so I expect Auburn to be a little bit better than last year and I expect Alabama to be solid. I concur with you completely and one of the things, it seems like Ole Miss is kind of under the radar right now. Watch out for Ole Miss, watch out for Tennessee. Those are some teams you need to look out for as well. Hey Greg, always fun to hang out with you. Be sure and check him out jonesygolf.com. Look forward to having you back on. Thanks for taking time to be with us, Greg. All right, thanks Randy. You'll have a great evening. All right, buddy. There you go. Greg Jones, Jonesygolf. Total performance coach. You can go to jonesygolf.com. All right, when we come back, we'll dive into just a little bit more golf, then we've got to get into some college football and who knows? Doug, we're going to throw it to you at that time. Hello, this is Greg Fair with Fox News Channel for your up-to-date golf and sports information news. Please continue to listen. Southern Fairways Radio Show with your host, Randy Bergen, Doug Holden, Matt Brant, and Sweet Swing in Bobby Hall. Have a blessed day, keep it fair, balanced, and unafraid, and by the way, roll tight and wore you. And welcome back to Southern Fairways Sports Radio. Glad to have you on board with us, Randy Bergen, along with Sweet Swing in Bobby Hall, War Eagle TV's Doug Houlton. Doug, we're going to get into some college football coming up in just a few moments, but Bobby's got it. What's that? Lovely. Great. Fantastic. Bobby's going to have a tip for us. And we're going to hear from Scotty Scheffler, a little bit about the gold medal that he got. You know, I don't know if you watched that or not, but that was pretty emotional for him. Yeah, exactly. We'll hear from him with a little bit of an interview and also his thoughts on your long race for the FedEx Cup, his thoughts on that. Are you saying the right title or not? Are you saying that Bobby is going to crack the code in just a minute here with a step? I crack the code every time I play. Bobby's cracking salt. We've got no neck, cracked peanuts in the cart. Oh, my goodness, all right, Bobby, what is a good tip that you have for us today? You know, Greg Jones was talking about the one, two, three, or one, and a two. So your rhythm is really important. But one thing I want you to do in your short game, especially around the greens, you have a decision to make. Am I going to flop it? Am I going to chip it and let it run? Am I going to fly it to the hole? Am I going to fly it two or three feet on the green and let it roll out? You have to decide what chip shot or short game shot you're going to choose. You may be behind a bunker. Regardless of that shot, your pre-shot routine needs to be this. Once you make your decision how you want to hit it, what club you want to hit, I want you to put your feet close together, ball pretty much right in between the toes, and I want you to take two to three practice swings, and you're not going to slow up play doing this, and notice where your club strikes the ground. Does it strike closer to your right toe in the middle of your stance or forward in your stance? Take two to three, maybe even four practice swings nice and easy. Get that rhythm one, two, three, and where does that club strike the ground? That's where the ball needs to be. I see so many people take a little pre-shot routine, then when they step up to hit their chip shot, they move it way out of that parameter. They don't even have it close to where that club was striking the ground. They think they're going to do something different. So, you need to be repetitive and consistent in your setup, and take those three swings because look where the club strikes the grass, and where it touches the ground, and that's where that ball needs to be, and you'll be more consistent. You watch the tour players today, the ladies at Scotland that are playing now, you watch this afternoon when the men are on tour, and then their short game, as they take their pre-shot routine, as they practice around the green. They're taking three or four quick shots, where's that club striking the ground? That's where that ball should be, and you'll be more consistent in your short game. Bob, you do that and watch every time we play, when you get around the green, you're definitely doing that, and nine times out of ten, your shot is pretty close to the pin if it doesn't go in. Well, thank you. I appreciate that, but it is consistency, so people are looking for that repetitiveness. That's how you do it in short game. Watch where that club strikes the ground. Good stuff, good stuff right there for sure. Obviously, Scotty Shepard got the gold, we saw that, and Lydia Coe got the gold in golf, and it was pretty emotional for Scotty Shepard. Here's what he had an interview with Todd Lewis, golf channel's Todd Lewis, and kind of went like this right here. Let's do talk about Paris. We saw your emotions and how important it was for you to be on the gold medal stand. You've had a week or two now to digest that. How would you describe that moment? I think it's very emotional hearing the national anthem, and I think you're even more proud to be standing there listening to it when you're on the podium, and have a gold medal around your neck, and it's a position growing up, and I never really thought about being because golf wasn't a part of the Olympics, and I always loved watching the Olympics winter in summer, and never really imagined being a part of it, and that was definitely a pretty special time there. It had been somewhat of a difficult week up until that point. I really hadn't played my best golf until Sunday, and things happened really quick, and it was a nice comeback, and yeah, I was definitely proud to be up there with the gold medal. All right, now you've got to recalibrate and try to win the FedEx Cup. You've had opportunities before. What have you learned from past chances to win the FedEx Cup that you hope to better this time? Well, most of it is just, at this point, I think it's just getting ready for Eastlake. But the way the format is, I think it would be fairly challenging for somebody to catch up to me in the points the way it is right now. You know, Xander and Rory are fairly close, but other than that, it would be unless somebody wins both the tournaments, it would be tough for them to get into that first position. So basically, just try to hold those guys off for the next two weeks and get ready for Eastlake. They certainly got a good chance at it for sure, as you mentioned, it's been close to a couple of times. It comes down to basically one tournament. They're in the playoffs right now. I'll get you the leaderboard here in just a second. I do want to get into some college golf, but your thoughts on the duck. Well, if you turn my mic on, Randy, I can talk better. It's always coughing. But yeah, we talked about that a lot before with Eastlake. It's a great venue for the tour championship, but it kind of comes down to the top 30 at Eastlake and only the top 10 or so have a chance to win. So the rest of the guys are just kind of hanging out and drinking beer. Weren't you there last year? Not last year. It was a few years ago. Oh, was it? Yeah. Yeah. It does come down. It comes down to basically the top 10. Yeah. And Scotty had his thoughts on does this year long race to the FedEx Cup? What are you doing? Is that the right title? Yeah. Let's hear what he had to say. You can't call it a season long race and have it come down to one tournament. I mean, hypothetically, we get to Eastlake and my neck flares up and it doesn't heal the way it did at the players. I finished 30th in the FedEx Cup because I had to withdraw from last tournament. Is that really the season long race? No. I mean, it is what it is. It's a fun tournament. I don't really consider it the season long race. Like, I think is the way it's called, but I mean, you got to figure out a way to strike a balance between it being a good TV product and it's still being our season long race. Right now, I don't know exactly how the ratings are or anything like that, but I know for a fact, you can't really quite call it the season long race when it comes down to one stroke play tournament on the same golf course each year. Nail on the head right there from Scotty. There you go. No doubt. Right now, Scotty is at minus nine. He'll tee off, probably just tee it off, it's supposed to be off at 1135 Eastern Standard Time. So that's about the right time right now. He's at nine under in fourth position right now, leading the way is Denny McCarthy looking for his first PGA win. I think he's got a couple of runner-ups. He's at 11 under along with Hadeki Matiyama, LSU's Sam Burns in third place right now at 10 under. So I was going to say Randy, just watching Greensboro last week, I was texting back and forth with a few of my friends there and we were talking about the field last tournament of the year and they have one player in Greensboro in the field that's in the top ten on the money list. So that's kind of an odd situation too. They got to change that around a little, but you had guys coming back from the Olympics that weren't playing there and it's just, they got to find something that fits at the end of the year. Like Scotty said, you got to find that balance between TV and fairness if you're going to call it the FedEx season long championship. Right. Bobby, your thoughts on it? Well, I agree with Doug, you know, you see that if you put everything on a curve, there's just so many events during the year that you have the top ten, fifteen, twenty players in the field and then it just dips and, you know, our good friend John Drego faces that out at the Byron Nelson is trying to get some of those top ten players to commit. Luckily has Jordan Speed there in the backyard. Jordan didn't commit to the Byron Nelson until right at the last minute. He wasn't in the field earlier in the weeks leading up to it. So you're going to see those dips and curves from that is the money and the emphasis on FedEx points and all that comes about and to find that well-rounded area, it's just, it's tough the way the tour is now. The one good thing for the younger players, we don't ever get to see, it gives them a little opportunity to get in the field if the top players aren't there, then they get bumped up and they get in, it gives them a chance to make some money but, you know, we don't know all those names down at the bottom of the list down there that get in but the tour is in the right direction. I'm not trying to change the subject but I looked at the leaderboard last night going into FedEx. If you look through the field, the number of players that are, that have made the cut and playing, it's outstanding. I mean, even the guys that are down in fifty to sixty of place, man, there's some great golf, you go to FedEx and watch some of the best golfers in the world or in that field. Even if they're not, you know, trying to get in the top or win the event and get in the top ten, you can see some magnificent golf and looking at the leaderboard at the ladies on the OPGA. It's Scottish. You go through the leaderboard, all the great names are up there. I mean, golf has just improved so much, it's in good hands. The one thing I think we're missing is the Jack Nicklases and the Arnold Palmer's. That character in the history and those players we were hoping like Phil Mickelson would step up but what he's done with Liv, he's just kicked himself in the butt as far as I'm concerned. But you know, we love the Freddy Couples. When Freddy's playing, you're going to watch him swing, he's still so smooth on Champions Tour. And I think we need the Jordan Speaks and these guys to step up and have the personalities. We like Kelly on the Champions Tour. He's fun. He's cutting the Jerry Kelly's, cutting up all the time. You love to watch him. We need to bring some fun. We need, of course, we lost Cheechie Rodriguez this last week. We need the Cheechies and the personalities and it's so business-like now that I think that Luster has dissipated and we need that to come back. We need some, not really star power, but just some charisma to come back to you. I agree with you. I agree with you. I think that's what's fun about the charity events is they laugh and cut up and all that. But you know, we need some personalities out there. We need to get back to the Bob Hope classics, you know, and the Pebble Beaches and the Clam Bakes. I thought it was pretty cool the first time that you did the event down in Orlando, the first year doing that, where you had the LPGA winners, you had some winners from the Champions Tour and then you had celebrities in there. That only lasted a year like that, but I thought it was pretty cool to do that. It was almost like a Pebble Beach-ish type feel. But nonetheless, you mentioned the top 50 right now. Keegan Bradley has, I think he's, he is obviously going to be the 2025 Ryder Cup captain, just made assistant captain for the US President's Cup under Jim Furek. But right now he is at 49 Harris English, is at 50. The Canadian Nick Taylor is on that bubble at 51. So those guys are fighting to get in that top 50. So they go to the BM Championship in Colorado and hopefully make it to East Lake. All right, let's talk a little, talk a little football, Doug. We kick the season off in the SEC in just a couple of weeks. You've got some pretty good games that will be happening on ABC at 11 o'clock game, Georgia and Clemson. It's a great, it's a great way to kick off the season. Georgia Bulldogs are highly ranked and Clemson, I'm not sure what they're ranked going into that one. Clemson's ranked 14, 14, 14, and Georgia is obviously ranked first. So down a little bit in the Dabo era, but it's a great, it's a colorful college football game and it's going to be fun to watch. But you know, when you said 11 o'clock, Randy, I was thinking, with the new television deal with the SEC, why do we have 11 o'clock games anymore? And especially this one. I mean, this is like, why not play it at night? You're talking about the nation's number one team. You have video on demand. Right. People on a streaming platform and put them all at night and then the afternoon and let people pick what they want to watch. Well, now you do like, come on, you do like a middle afternoon or an afternoon game. That's what I'm saying. Put some at 2.30 and put some at 7 o'clock and let people pick, which just do away with the 11 o'clock game. I don't like that for college football. Let me ask you, I'm looking through this, we'll go through this schedule real quick for the 31st, August 31st, which would be when SEC kicks off. I'll set you up for next week's. But I look through there, I said Tennessee earlier, the ranks 15th, they'll take on Chattanooga. That'll be 11 45 game. Number four, Texas will host Colorado State. That'll be on ESPN at 2.30. Also at 2.30 on ABC is going to be a very interesting game. Number 19, Miami, the hurricanes, traveled to Gainesville to take on Florida. How about Napier this year? That's, I mean he is definitely, if you talk about hot teas, I think you've got to put him on there. He's definitely there. And the Gators got to perform this year, he won't be there. That's right. Alright, let's continue talking to some college football, we'll do that whenever we get back more right here on Southern Fairways. Absolutely the scariest thing I just saw there was the three of us dancing to that song right here. Not together. No, not together. I did see you and Bobby holding hands as you did that though, but hey, welcome back to Southern Fairways. Putting the, I'll tell you this, I was going by extremely fast, so we putting the wraps on it. Maybe we'll give you a fish report here in just a few moments, but do want to continue talking a little college football. It's too hot to fish. That's a report. Well, you're not a fisherman, too hot for golf. It is warm out there. There it is. Bobby, we were out there yesterday and I'm telling you one of the things that you're seeing now is this weather. We were talking about it on the Prep Sports report about high school starting up on Thursday of this upcoming week and concerned about the weather. I mean, not only is it hot, but you have all the rain and lightning and all of that. Doug and I were talking about that earlier, just the weather. How are they practicing? I mean, it's so hot and being under those pads and working your tail off to get on the team. I was saying that linemen have probably lost 20, 30 pounds and they're trying to beef up and be big and you can't. You're sweating your butt off up there playing. They're going to have the cold tubs at Quail Creek on the practice team this week. We need them. Wow. Are the high school teams still taking like breaks in the middle of the game to make it pull down? Is that still a rule? They had first six minutes of, I think it's each quarter, at least the first, second and third quarters I believe they're doing that six minute water break, six minutes into the quarter, they'll stop it. Good. Yeah. Yeah, it's just so hot. So bless those kids hearts. Good luck to all of them out there. Crazy. I cannot imagine being in pads right now. I can't either. Thank goodness I'm not. Yeah. Well, maybe we should. We could lose 20 or 30 pounds. 20 or 30 pounds. That's right. That's why I got my dog. They're running my dog at the least one. There you go. I was thinking about Miami and Florida. I was getting your thoughts on that, Doug, because with Napier, as we mentioned, he is on the hot seat. That'll be a 230 game on the 21st, excuse me, on the 31st ABC, you'll be able to see that. I think you need to watch Miami too. That might be one of those teams here. You keep your eye on the floor. Yeah, they're always a team that has talent down there in Miami, but one of the interesting things I heard Bobby and Randy the other day is listening to the radio and the Florida fans are thinking about the future already, you know, if Napier doesn't work out. And one of the names I heard was one of the names I was talking about for the Auburn job when it was open, and that's Tim Tebow, which doesn't have a lot of coaching experience, but can you imagine recruiting and the staff that he could put together at a place like Florida where he'd play college football? You think? Yeah. I mean, I think that would be pretty effective. A lot of people thought I was crazy, but I think that would be a great direction for Florida to go. Well, I agree with you on that. I think Florida right now, though, is hoping that Napier does get some wins and he's able to keep that job. So we'll see again, a 2/30 on the 31st, maybe so, maybe so against Miami Alabama will host Western Kentucky. That'll be on ESPN at 6 p.m. Ole Miss comes in ranked sixth. They'll take on Furman. The Paladins. That's not far from where you grew up. That's in South Carolina. Furman. Yeah, but was that not far from where you grew up or not? Well, I grew up in North Carolina. It's north of South Carolina. Okay, Doug. Okay. All right. Not too far. About an hour or two. Yeah. Now, speaking of Furman, they had some great golfers come out of Furman. They certainly have. Ooh, they had Dottie Pepper, Beth Daniel, came out of there and who's the Long Island Red is doing the TV announcing now. Sorry. I can't remember his name. Putting, played on the tour a long time. Anyway, he played at Furman. Good stuff. All right. Hey, how about one of the games I think everybody's going to keep their eye on, especially down in South Alabama will be number seven Notre Dame going to college station to take on the Aggies of Texas A&M ranked 20th. That'll be a 6.30 game on ABC, of course, for Notre Dame. Former Fairhold Pirate, Riley Leonard will be quarterbacking Leaves Duke. He goes to Notre Dame. Of course, Elko leaves Duke and goes to be the Texas Aggie coach. So they'll be going against each other in the game. I think that'll be kind of neat. Be a good story. There was a nice write-up on him today, and in fact, Mayor Sullivan was in there. She's got tickets to his first ball game. Oh, has everyone had a nice write-up about Fairhold being his hometown? So, yeah, look forward to that. That'll be fun to watch, again, 6.30 ABC on the 31st, just two weeks away. So I know Chad's going to be, Chad will probably be at the game. I would imagine he's going to be there at college station. And then also at 6.30, go ahead. No, I was just going to say, speaking of Elko and Riley, one of the interesting things that I listened to Hugh Freeze yesterday, one of the interesting things that's going to happen in college football this year, Randy, is the communication between the head coach or whoever's calling the plays and the quarterback and their helmet. And I think everybody's trying to figure out how to do this because you can talk to your quarterback up until 15 seconds on the play plot, and then you can't talk anymore. So what do you monitor that? I guess the refs do. I'm not sure that maybe they have a ref in the booth that cuts it off or something. I'm not sure how that works. But anyway, how much information do you fill in with before 15 seconds and does the defense wait until 15 seconds and then switch? So they're going to be looking at the play clock and then switch their defense at 10 seconds. We'll find out. Stay tuned. It's going to be really interesting to have a course of course your Auburn Tigers take on Alabama A&M that'll be an ESP and an SEC network televised game. No question about it. And interesting to hear the thoughts about Peyton Thorne. That's again, I think a big question mark this year. You can talk the talk but can you walk the walk and everybody's talking about the receivers at Auburn still and the young guys that are there and Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons is getting a lot of conversation and Bryce Kane from down here in Mobile who is a true freshman as well. They're talking about those two guys returning punts as true freshman for Auburn this year. It's interesting to me. I think one of the games is really going to be interesting and I don't remember a college Sunday game. We will see on September the 1st, Sunday September the 1st. The Trojans of Southern Cowell Ring 23 will come in to, well actually they'll play LSU in Las Vegas, a 630 game on ABC on a Sunday. Do you like this? I mean, what we're beginning to see is obviously you see Thursday night games, you see Saturday Saturday night games. Now we're seeing a Sunday game. I think somewhere down the line too you might see a Friday college game which kind of takes away from the high school. Mucho De Niro. That's exactly what it is. That is exactly what it is. It'll be a little gambling in Las Vegas that day. You think? Yeah. What? They won't say about that. LSU money out there, but they won't. There's plenty of it. There's plenty of it. Well, I do know that Bob, you and I had the opportunity to go to an Alabama LSU game a couple of years ago in Baton Rouge a night game and we had the time of our life. We had a rickshaw ride. It was fun. They do a lot of odd things in Baton Rouge on game night. I want to tell you what was kind of neat though, if you're an LSU fan, you know this, but that when you go into the stadium there as you enter the stadium and you have that the tiger, a live tiger, not a stuffed tiger, but he's roaming around pretty interesting. That's a great place to go watch football. I love going to Ole Miss games, just the atmosphere at Ole Miss, LSU, SEC's just got it going on. It's just so much pageantry. I love it. Hey, listen, I got to throw a shout out to our Southern Miss Golden Eagles. We got a new quarterback, Tade Rottermaker, who was played at Florida State for a little bit, has transferred in and Southern Miss will go up on the 31st and take on the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington now, you know. Another coach is on the hot seat. It'll be Will Hall this year. I mean, we've had some disappointing- In a can. No can, but he'll be on the hot seat this year. With a new quarterback, you know, maybe we can put a few points on the board and we'll see. That'd be one of those early season shockers, wouldn't it? Yeah, that'd be great. But Southern Miss should compete a little bit better in the Sunbelt this year. Yeah. Looking forward to playing South at the end of the season. That's going to be a great rivalry over the next few years. So anyway, Southern Miss jumping in the SEC again. Absolutely. So, we need to get that game back. I miss that Auburn Southern Miss game and they used to play. They used to play there, Alabama, we used to play Tulane. We had some good times. I remember 1979, I think when I was in high school, my first year in Alabama, Southern Miss beat Alabama, right? Right. Unfortunately for Coach Bear Bryant, his last loss at Bryant Denny was against Southern Miss when Jim Carmody was coaching. And Reggie Collier was quarterbacking and we upset the Bear that year and then they went on to play in the Liberty Bowl. Yeah. After the Auburn Bowl. Yeah. After the Auburn Bowl. Well, look. Next Saturday, as I mentioned, tomeets leather, they'll kick off number 10 Florida State. We'll take on Georgia Tech. They'll be playing. Where do you ask? In Dublin, Ireland. That'll be an 11 o'clock ESPN game. Montana State will be taking on New Mexico in Albuquerque. That'll be on FS1 at 3 o'clock. SMU will take on Nevada at 7 p.m. That'll be on CBS, SN, they're in Reno, Nevada and Delaware State taking on Hawaii What day is that? That might be close to the time we're going Bobby. That's actually that'll be in Honolulu on a 10.59 p.m. game. You know, Randy, if you want to take this show on the road, you can go to Las Vegas, Hawaii, Ireland. I do want to take it on the road. I do want to take it on the road. We're going to take it on the road in September from Maui. But yeah, so there you go. You got that kicking off. You got some other games going on too that'll happen, actually the 29th, Thursday, 29th, really. You really start seeing a kick off. It'll be fun to watch Florida State and Georgia Tech from Dublin, Ireland. Ireland! All of them will have a fantastic time. Hey, love it. Alright, wow. The hour came and gone. It's fast. It is fast.
