The 1Life Podcast with Behka White

Episode 40 - Blue

In Episode 40 of the 1life podcast, host Behka White talks about the concept of selective attention. She shares a personal anecdote of losing her bank card while running on a trail. While retracing her steps, she noticed many bright blue objects that caught her eye, even though they weren't her card. This experience led her to realize that our brains are wired to focus on what we're looking for and filter out the rest. Behka then invites listeners to practice selective attention by intentionally looking for blue objects throughout their day. The episode concludes with a reminder to be intentional about what we focus on, as it shapes our perception of reality.

Welcome to the One Life podcast with Becca White. I am your host in this episode 40 blue. Just yesterday I went for a run on my favorite route on the Highline Canal Trail. Colorado has the best trail system. Shortly thereafter I realized that I lost my bank card somewhere on the trail so I made my way back to retrace my steps. My bank card is bright blue so if it was still on the gray gravel trail I was confident that I would find it. As my eyes searched for blue I was fascinated and surprised to find several bright blue items jump out at me. The first was a feather, then a tiny flower, a blue bead, an unidentifiable object and a piece of trash. Each time something blue caught my eye I was sure it was my card because bright blue is out of place in nature, right? Apparently not. Finally up ahead just off the trail I saw a large tree trunk with specks of bright blue. As I got closer I saw figurines, paper, beads and random objects hanging from it. Some of them bright blue. My card was not amongst the items. But as I came around the trunk I saw a sign hanging which said, The imagination tree, where dreams begin. Understanding I took a minute to examine the items which had been so tenderly hung on the tree, representing someone's dream. Now I have run this route so many times, how have I never seen the imagination tree? Selective attention, that's how. This is a fancy term for how our brains choose to see what we are looking for and ignore what we are not. Our brains are so smart. Today I invite you to see blue. Look for it in nature, in your home, on your drive, everywhere you go. See blue. And every time you see blue, let it remind you of the good things in your life. See the good. Assign your brain the task to see the good. And I hope that you have a very blue day today. We only get one life, let's make it our best. [BLANK_AUDIO]
