had a very good afternoon to you. This is Phil T, our apologies for the break-in transmission a bit earlier on, but we've been playing a bit of non-stop music and my show will be on after the news at four o'clock. So we're broadcasting live now from Harridge, a very good afternoon to you and well, it's my birthday today. And here I am doing the show, but I'm going down the pub afterwards. So I wonder if you can guess what the weather's like, I'll give you a clue. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] So that's the association and I guess you guessed it, it's Wendy here, very Wendy. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Well, we apologize for not bringing you the news at three o'clock this afternoon due to technical reasons, Flip Studios up the creek at the moment, but hi to you Flip if you're listening, here am I to do the rescue today. So it's time for the news, hopefully he says. [Music] Thank you very much, FSN and the next news on Big L1 will be at five o'clock. [Music] Welcome to the last in the series of the drive time show for Thursday for me because next week I'm swapping over to Wednesday. Gary and I were doing a swap and that's because I've got quite a lot of hospital appointments on Thursday. So thanks Gary for your help with that one. So it's Phil T here. [Music] We've got eight advance requests this afternoon and we've got to beat the intro competition. So if you're all sitting comfortably then I'll begin by playing it for you. Do you know what this is? [Music] Let's play it again. [Music] Contact Big L Radio now. Phone. [Music] Well see if you know what that one is. If we don't get many answers we'll put a few clues in there for you. [Music] We've got our first request then and this is especially for John Mandrag over there in Hammersmith. [Music] His share. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Jesus came and changed the time and I grew up. I called him mine. He would always laugh and say remember when we used to play bang bang. I shot you down bang bang. You hit the ground bang bang. That awful sound bang bang. I used to shoot you down. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Now it's gone. I don't know why until this day sometimes I cry. He didn't even say goodbye. He didn't take the time to lie bang bang. He shot me down bang bang. I hit the ground bang bang. That awful sound bang bang. My baby shot me down. [Music] [Music] What a lovely record there. So beautiful those violins. This is Big L Radio. [Music] Tell your smart speaker to play Big L Radio and hear the best oldies all day long. Well let's hope the A-Lady is behaving this afternoon. A very good afternoon to Ron in Dalich who was first in today. With a correct answer to our competition. Well done Ron. [Music] Well I guess you better guess who's going to be next week on Thursday. Yes, it'll be Gary Jackson of course. [Music] This is Cookie inviting you to join me for two hours of wonderful music and fun Thursday evenings. We'll have a long song something to bring a smile to your face and the original 5 from 10 chart recall. A Thursday evening swari 7 p.m. on that big L. [Music] [Music] [Music] Every Thursday 9 p.m. till 10 non-stop Beatles. [Music] [Music] Strip off and snuggle up with Kevin Reed for Big Love. Big L International. Midnight. Monday through Friday. [Music] So our second request then for John Mandrak it's Billy Joel or Billy Joel if you'd prefer. Phil Troll memories from the past. [Music] Big L International. She's always a woman to me. [Music] Enjoy John. [Music] She can kill with a smile. She can wound with her eyes. And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies. And she only reveals what she wants you to see. She hides like a child but she's always a woman to me. [Music] She can lead you to love. She can take you all leaving. She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe. And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free. Yeah, she steals like a thief but she's always a woman to me. Oh, she takes care of herself. She can wait if she wants. She's ahead of her time. Oh, and she never gives up. And she never gives in. She just changes her mind. And she'll promise you more than the garden of Eden. And she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding. But you'll bring out the best and the worst you can be. Blame it all on yourself cause she's always a woman to me. [Music] Oh, she takes care of herself. She can't wait if she wants. She's ahead of her time. Oh, and she never gives up. And she never gives in. And she just changes her mind. She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cool. But she can do where she pleases. She's nobody's fool. And she can't be convicted. She's earned her degree. And the most she will do is throw shadows at you but she's always a woman to me. [Music] Oh, wasn't that beautiful? Such a great songwriter, singer and piano player as well. Of course, very talented musician. Billy Joel and she's always a woman. That was especially for John over there in Hammersmith. So I hope you enjoyed your two requests. Next we've got two requests for Ron over there in Dallas. She's so far is the only one who's entered the competition. So we're going to play it for you again in a sec. [Music] So if you've just joined us and wanted to know what happened earlier on, well, Flip's computer flipped basically. It didn't fire up. So we do apologize for that. One of those things, you know, these things happen. But I stepped in very quickly as soon as I could and started playing a bit of non-stop music for you at least so you didn't hear that horrible ticking noise. Sounded a bit like a woodpecker, didn't it? Oh, dear, oh dear. Competition then. [Music] Let's play it again. [Music] Contact Bigel Radio now. Phone. Oh, one, two, five, five, eight, eight, one, one, three. [Music] OK, Clue's for you then. His first name, or the abbreviation of his first name, you could say that you stand on from time to time, that is. That's a clue for the name of the artist. And he also made a song, something to do with walking. OK, so that's a clue for the artist. And as far as, well, we'll play it again for you in a moment if you don't get it right. So let's carry on then with our next record for Ron Indulge, and it's the clog dance. I don't know if it's from Holland, because I know they've got lots of clogs over there, haven't they, Paul Voss? And I'm sure Danny's got them as well, actually. The little troll is now broadcasting live on Bigel Radio. Notify your local law enforcement authority right away. Right, so we've got Philinsky, I think it's pronounced, and this one's from... 1979! It's the clog dance for Ron Indulge. Enjoy. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] So another clue for the competition, and his first name begins with M, and his surname is also M, so it's M-M. [Music] And I think he was walking on at one time. [Music] [Music] [Music] So I'd like to thank David and Trina for your birthday messages. Oh, it's not finished. It's trying to trick me. [Music] Okay, so have you finished now? I think so. [Music] Yeah, so hi to David and Trina. I hope you're well, and hi to everybody on Facebook that's wished me a happy birthday today. I'm 70 years old. Oh dear, I was always dreading getting to 70, but people tell me it's not as bad as it seems. So let's hope you're right. I haven't had a chance to look at all the Facebook messages. There's well over 40 of them, probably more, so I'll be checking those out probably first thing tomorrow morning because after the show I'm going to go down the boozer and have a couple of beers and meeting up more on mate Dave. Dave, if you're listening, hi. I'm sure you'll like this next record which Ron has requested. It's E.L.O. and I know you're a great fan of E.L.O. Dave. Show down. This one's called 1973. [Music] She cried to the southern wind, but alive at the sugar hills, every dream and the heart was gone, heading for a showdown. Bad dream of what's your name? Looks like we're running on the same train. Looks just don't let me more be. It's gonna be a showdown. And it's a rain, all over the world. It's a rain, all over the world. And it's the longest night. [Music] She came to me like my friend. She grew up on the southern wind. Now my heart is that the storm again is gonna be a showdown. Save me, save me. It's a rain, it's a rain, it's gonna be a showdown. And it's a rain, it's all over the world. [Music] It's a rain, it's all over the world. Made the longest night. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] So we've got a request for Tina over there in Plymouth in a minute. [Music] So Tina, thanks very much for your birthday wishes and also Charles over there. He's in hospital at the moment. So Charles, I hope you can hear me on the internet. I know it's a bit dodgy there. But if you can hear me Charles, I hope you'll be out of hospital soon and they can help you. So wish you a speedy recovery Charles. And it was great to see you a couple of weeks back. That was good. Haven't seen you for years have I really? So that's what you're listening to and we've got a lovely request for Tina over there in Plymouth in a moment. It was great to talk to you on the old jelly bone Tina. Right so we're gonna do that competition again. It's very quiet tonight. What's happening? Am I broadcasting to myself or what? I've only had one email so far which is very unusual for this time of the day. Perhaps a load of people tuned away when they got all the woodpecker sound. But we are back live now here on Big L so tell your friends. And we're gonna play you that competition again. So his name is well M-M. That's his first name and his second name. Both beginning with M and the first name is an abbreviation but also you could stand on one of these. Yeah and you might put one near the door or you wipe your feet on. [Music] Contact Big L Radio now. Phone. Oh one, two, five, five, eight, oh eight, one, one, three. Email studio@biglradio.co.uk So that's the competition and we'll be giving you answers that round about ten to six before Gary comes on after the news. And then of course at seven we've got to a cookie. What else do I need to say? Oh yeah, thanks very much to Frank, Frank Wiskin, who sat in for me on Saturday and I was able to get into London. And I went on a lovely boat trip. It was wonderful. I went from Westminster to Greenwich and we ended up at a pub there. Called the Gypsy Moth and I had a nice meal. And meet up with some old maids who haven't seen for years. And I made a couple of new friends there as well. So it was great. And then of course I went on to stay with my son, Bobby, over there in Seven Kings, stayed there Sunday and had a great day. And met my lovely granddaughter, Alaya. She's now just turned five and she's so sweet. She's really charming. So right, what are we going to do next? Let's play a record for Tina, shall we? We're going to play the trailers first and then we'll be back. Tina. All right, my dear. What do we do with the drunken sailor? What do we do with the drunken sailor? What do we do with the drunken sailor? What do we do with the drunken sailor? Alaya in the morning, making this to Simon Davis, making this to Simon Davis, making this to Simon Davis. Making this to Simon Davis. Alaya in the morning. Yeah, that was Steve James and Steve. Hi to you if you're listening and thanks very much for your birthday wishes. And Big L radio, we've discovered the secret to a great breakfast. And she's all woman. Join Susie at eight o'clock in the morning, Monday to Friday, for the best music and competitions to get your brain working in the morning. Don't miss it. Or you'll miss out. Susie's Big L breakfast show. And also thanks to Susie as well for your birthday wishes. And thanks to all the people who sent me wishes on the Big L group. So, yeah, thanks to you all. I can't remember everybody you did because I didn't write all them down. But anyway, I'm sure I'm grateful for all the good wishes here on the Big L. So, what am I going to do tonight? So I'm going to go for a couple of quick pints probably after the show and I'm meeting up my friend Dave. And maybe Tom as well if you're listening Tom Hardy. Thanks for your wishes as well. And there's so many actually. Let's play the next trailer. The Steve James radio show. It's amazing. I listen to it every morning. It's really good. It's really great. It's one of the best. It is amazing. It's absolutely fantastic. I listen to it every single morning. It's great from 10 a.m. till 12 midday, Monday to Friday. Steve James radio show. Well, on the 31st of August, I'm going to do a special tribute to the Dutch pirate stations that had to close down in 1974. So, it'll be quite a long time ago now, won't it? But so we're going to have a little tribute to R&I and Radio Atlantis. Maybe a couple from Veronica as well. But of course, Caroline was the only one that actually stayed on. So, the tribute will be on the Saturday show on the 31st. So, I hope you'll tune in for that and tell all your friends if they're that way inclined, if they're radio freaks like me. Right. So, Tina, waiting very patiently there in the background for your record, aren't you, my dear? Right. So, this is a song and, well, I'll tell you about. I'll give you a clue. People who used to listen to R&I in 1970, when this record was played quite a lot, all you could hear was beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. And that was the jamming signal, which was done by the English government indirectly. And it was the first station that was ever jammed since the Second World War. And that we were really not very happy about it. ♪ 1970 ♪ And the song that I'm going to play for you, especially for Tina, is Questions. The Moody Blues. Then we had Sarah in Ramsgate. We got your email twice. So Sarah. But yes, you got it right absolutely. And David and Trina have now got the title as well as the name of the artist. So well done to you all. And we'll be playing it again for you after the next record. And yeah, we've got another one for Peter over there in Plymouth. Did you know we have a Listen Again page? Well we've got a little jingle for you. [MUSIC] Bigel. It's Bigel of course great music. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And that record, the competition, is from 1970. Okay but the next record is from 1973. And this is one that I used to play on radio cyclone which was a very low power station that we had in Whitechapel for the colleges around there. There were several different colleges. And we were on 92.4 FM and also on 201 meters, medium wave. And then we also went on to 221 meters as well at some point. And when we put the power up one particular night, who should come along but naughty naughty? Hello, hello, hello, what's going on then? Luckily they didn't catch us though. So this is a record we used to play quite a lot on radio cyclone. So I don't know if Paul Jones is listening but Paul was of course on cyclone. And I'm sure you'll remember this one Paul from the Pepper Box. [MUSIC] It's by the Peppers. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Yeah, so it brings back great memories of radio cyclone. Used to be on the air. I think it was mainly Tuesday nights. It was on for about six o'clock till 10. And we used to play all the requests and everything for all the students. So yeah, it was fun. And then of course that radio cyclone went on to bigger things a bit later on. We moved into the forest and started broadcasting from well fields and things so that we couldn't get caught. But yeah, we are. That was a radio cyclone, which of course brings back great memories. And then of course when that closed down, we formed East London radio and that started, I think, in about 1976. So there we are. It's a little bit of background to that particular song of great, well, it's not a song, it's a tune, isn't it? We're featuring the Moog synthesizer. And also of course there was a collaborator in the background there. I did have a clavenet, it's a keyboard and Stevie Wonder and people like the guy from Yes. Rick Waitman, he's got one as well. And Chairman of the Board, if you remember, finders keepers. All of those records featured the clavenet. And I had one, but he got Nick to Army Van, which was a real shame because I was quite attached to it actually. Well, I'm told if I still had it now, it'd be worth quite a lot of money because there's not many of them in this country. There are quite a few in America, but not many over here in the UK. And I used to tune it myself because I'm a qualified piano tuner, so I was able to do that. But yeah, you had to just turn a little screw around and you pressed the keys down and it had little tangents underneath and it hit the strings. And what a wonderful sort of funky sound it used to make. 1958. So back to the '50s now then, this is The Book by David Whitfield. As a book that my mother gave me, but I read when the one day's through, and the star is a bold. In leaves edged with gold, guide me whatever I do. For I know in its wall all pages, I shall find peace of mind when I look, and the wisdom of all the ages is there in my mother's book. It's a flag that my mother gave me, but I read when the one day's through, and the star is a bold. In leaves edged with gold, guide me whatever I do. For I know in its wall all pages, I shall find peace of mind when I look, and the wisdom of all the ages. Is there in my mother's book? David Whitfield, who is very popular at the time, and he also made a record called My September Love, which was one of my mum's favourite records. And I played it here on Big L A Few Times. So you're listening to Phil T. It's the last time I'm going to be here on this particular slot those days, moving to Wednesdays, 4pm till 6pm next week. And I will be back on Saturday, of course, with the extravaganza show, thanks to Frank last week for sitting in for me. And also I'll be here on Monday with the Motown request show. Hi everybody, it's Danny Van Dam, join me for the Lunchtime Shuffle from Monday to Friday between 12 and 2. That's between 1 and 3 Central European time of Big L International. So, we'll be giving the competition answers right about 10 minutes before we go off the air to make way for Gary Jackson. After him, of course, we've got Cookie, then we've got the Beatles, then we've got, I think Harky again, actually, although he's on tomorrow as well, and then we've got Kev Reed. So, we go back to 1958 when it was first released in one country, and it was released again in 1959. So, there were two different versions, one in England and one in America. I'm not sure which one came out first, and they changed the name of the song slightly, but I've got it written down here as "Beep, Beep", the little bubble car, and this is the playmates. While riding in my limousine, what to my surprise? A little bubble car was following me about one-third my size. The guy must have wanted to pass me out, as he kept on tooting his horn. I'll show him that all the limousine is not a car to scorn. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. I pushed my foot down to the floor to give the guy the shake, but the little bubble car stayed right behind, he still had on his break. He must have thought his car had more guts, as he kept on tooting his horn. I'll show him that my limousine is not a car to scorn. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. His horn went beep beep beep. My car went into passing gear and we took off with Gus. Soon we were doing 90. Must have left him in the dust. When I'd be in the mirror of my car I couldn't believe my eyes. The bubble car was right behind. I think that guy could fly. Beep beep beep beep. His horn went beep beep beep. Now we're doing 110. This certainly was a race. For a ball is fast. The limo would be a big disgrace. The guy must want to pass me out as he kept on tuning his horn. And I'll show him that a limo zine is not a character's corn. Beep beep beep beep beep. His horn went beep beep beep beep. Now we're doing 120 as fast as I could go. The bubble pulled alongside of me as if I were low and slow. The feller would down his window and yell for me to hear. Hey buddy how can I get this car out of second gear? Beep beep the little bubble car yeah. I can imagine the frustration of the other driver there. And some I remember hearing many times on children's favorites of course. Was it the light program or was it a radio too by then? I can't remember but anyway. It certainly brings back a few memories here on one. Howard yes you've got it absolutely right now well done. And he's saying well there's nothing wrong with Madonna Frey and Nick is in the audience because Tom Jones used to do similar things as well. Well yep maybe he did maybe he did. [Music] So we've got another record coming up now from the fortunes. You gave me somebody to love and yeah not too sure if I've heard this before. [Music] Baby it's been a hard only since you've been gone. Oh oh oh oh. But you let me with the strength to carry on. Oh it hurts so much. I've accepted the fight with you. 'Cause the greatest kid in life I got from you. Baby baby you gave me somebody to love. You gave me somebody to love. [Music] The memories of the night when we stayed until dawn. Oh oh oh. You gave me somebody to love. [Music] [Music] Baby it's alright. Go and do what you got to. 'Cause the greatest kid in life I got from you. [Music] Yeah one that's not played quite so much there. That's the fortunes. I don't think I've heard that one before. I just had a message come in from Anita who says of course it was the light program. Well yes of course my memory got a bit mixed up there Anita. Well of course in those days you didn't get sort of me talking with Echo and that sort of thing. You'd turn the Echo off restart and then of course we'd get very posh. This is the BBC light program. You know that's how they used to talk you see. And Uncle Mac he used to talk like he had a trophy apple in his mouth. You know yes. So there was a very strange things going on the light program and it was much more sensible to tune at night to Radio Luxembourg 208 meters in the medium wave band. Well done that bring back some memory day. Oh dear idea. [Music] Whenever news breaks feature story news is there. Irishpitzer, Berlin. Kate Fisher, Washington. Danaspie in Daris Alarm.
