(upbeat music) - We've made it halfway through the week and we're getting that much closer to the Northeast Washington Fair. It is a Wednesday. I'm Eric Carpenter and this is K-C-V-L-K-C-R-K. Well, in a lot of ways, it's kind of back to the drawing board as far as wolves go and the lead point wolf pack. Back August 12th, the Fish and Wildlife Director authorized the lethal removal of up to two adult wolves from the lead point pack. That because of repeated cattle depredations. Well, since as of August 19th, Fish and Wildlife had not removed a wolf despite daily and continued efforts, utilizing multiple different methods, the lethal removal authorization for that pack has expired. There has not been a depredation in this pack territory since August 2nd. So now, since the Department of Fish and Wildlife failed to not only take out one, but two of the wolves authorized, they will not at this point. They are now going to enter an evaluation period. Fish and Wildlife staff will continue to monitor the situation. But even though there were two wolves authorized to be taken from the lead point pack, they were unsuccessful in getting any wolves. - A huge thank you to everyone who shopped during Saunders Furniture Inventory Reduction Sale. Your support made it a tremendous success, but don't forget there's still time to enter our drawing for $500 in free furniture. You have until August 31st to drop your entry. Thank you for being part of the excitement. We couldn't have done it without you. Enter by August 31st for your chance to win. It's Saunders Furniture, where amazing deals and great customers make all the difference. - Always one of the huge events at the Northeast Washington Fair is the fat stock sale. Well, it's expected to be one of the biggest fat stock sales ever. We talked with Scott Nielsen about Saturday's big event. My name is Scott Nielsen, I'm the president of the Stevens County Cattleman's Association and the Stevens County Cattleman Association wants to announce that the fat stock sale at the Northeast Washington Fair is Saturday, August 24th. The event will be starting at 2 p.m. The intended start time was 3 p.m. But we want to let the buyers know that it has changed an earlier start date to accommodate for the number of animals that will be sold. The fair book says it will start at 3 p.m. but it will be starting at 2 p.m. The problem that arose was the sheer number of animals who have to sell. I think every barn has more participation and some of the barns have a lot more participation. We love to see more kids involved in agriculture. Now that its success is a credit to the fair in general and the barn superintendents in particular. They're the ones that make this a well-run operation that the kids enjoy participating in. This year's sale promised to be the biggest one yet. Last year's sale ran later into the evening and started to conflict with other events. And Kelly Hughes takes the stage at seven this year so we want to be done by seven so people can enjoy that entertainment as well. We plan to move a little faster so if you're wanting to support the kids, be there early and raise your hand off and so we can be done on time. As always, you'll be able to buy the animal, take it home and keep it as a pet or have it processed locally at Gallo Meets in Colville or Smokey Ridge in Chueila. The animals can go to any facility as long as you arrange transportation. But Gallo's and Smokey Ridge will transport the animal to the facilities after the fair so you don't have to. You can also support the animal when you do this. You are buying the animal but a facility that wants the meat, paste what we call a floor price. You will pay the difference from the floor price to the bid price. If you do this, the floor buyer takes the animal and you take home the satisfaction that you supported a kid in a worthwhile cause. Our floor prices will be clearly marked on the bid sheets available at the clerk's desks there shortly before the sale. When the animal is sold, you will be asked what you want done with the animal. So if you choose to buy at the sale, please be prepared to tell us what you want done with the animal, where you want it to go or if you're supporting it. The butcher shops will contact you about cutting instructions later. You also make sure that our sale clerk has your information to pass on to the butcher. We prefer to have this taken care of before the sale but you can always visit the clerk's table after the purchase and verify that we have the correct information. This is kind of an important step for us. We want to make sure that the animal is going where you want during the auction. We do the best we can to gather that information from you and pass it on. But especially if you've had issues in the past, go to the clerk's table and make sure that we're getting the right information and that everybody's understanding each other. This is an auction happening in real time and the ringmen will ask you where you want it to go and we need an answer then and then we're marking it down and moving it onto the clerk. If there's something that's incorrect about that, you can go and verify it with the clerk and get it changed and you can do that after the sale but we'd rather have you making sure it's right than having you not happy with what happened afterwards. So I'm pretty confident we're going to have our biggest sale ever and it's going to be a lot to fit in there. So we're going to try and move things right along. Our association associated managed sale for decades. We continue to be committed to its success. Kids work long and hard for the reward and satisfaction of being part of the fat stock sale. We recognize some importance of the effort and we'll continue to provide a market for them now and into the future. We look forward to seeing all of the buyers at the fair and thank you to the community for those supporting the kids in the fat stock sale. - Once again, the sale this year will be starting at two Saturday afternoon. We're going to find out more this week about the animals and their weights and other factors that qualify them to participate in the big Saturday sale. - Join Caldwell Together, a main street program for fourth Friday on August 23rd. This family-friendly event features vendors along Maine and Astor, a downtown art walk starting at three and free kids crafts at the library from 3 to 5.30. Then cap off the evening with live music by midnight run from five to eight in Heritage Court. Music sponsored by the Vincent Fund. Then you can head on down to the Northeast Washington Fair for some fair fun. It's fourth Friday in downtown Colville. Don't miss it. - Today's Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife question of the week is about the new discovery of chronic wasting disease here in Washington State. Here's the details on that. - Hi, I'm Hunter Westcott. I'm the Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Coordinator with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. At WDFW, we get a lot of questions from the public. When we've heard a lot recently is, I've read that Washington has had this first confirmed case of chronic wasting disease. What does it mean for hunters in the deer population? Washington's first case of chronic wasting disease, CWD for short, has been confirmed in an adult female white-tailed deer that was found dead in the Fairwood area of North Spokane. We are still figuring out what the impact will be. TWD is a disease that infects members of the surveyed or deer family and is fatal in 100% of infected deer. There is no cure and it can only be confirmed through testing of lymph nodes or brain tissue once the animal has died. CWD can spread to other deer, elk, and moose, and over time can reduce their populations if it becomes widespread. TWD has been documented in 34 other states and four Canadian provinces. WDFW has been testing for it in Washington since 1995. We have also been proactively preparing for the possibility of finding the disease in Washington by developing a chronic wasting disease management plan. The guide's health and department will move forward with managing the spread of CWD. As outlined in the plan, our immediate next steps include identifying an initial response area to identify and manage the affected region, establishing a transport restriction zone to control the movement of potentially infected animals. In the coming weeks, the department will determine how to estimate the prevalence of CWD and decide on strategies to contain the disease within the transport restriction zone. Throughout this process, we will be keeping the public informed. At this time, WDFW staff are discussing potentially requiring all harvested deer, elk, and moose in the initial response area to be tested during this year's hunting season. Staff are also considering requiring testing for salvaged, roadkill, deer, and elk. Both will require formal rule changes, and we will put out more information on that as we know more. We have also had questions about the possibility of CWD transferring to domestic animals, livestock, or humans. They throw no confirmed cases of CWD transmission from wildlife to domestic animals, or humans, or livestock. Minimize the risk, though. The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends against consuming meat from any animal that appears sick or has tested positive for CWD. The CDC website has additional safety tips on handling game to reduce your risk. That can be found by searching CDC and chronic wasting of disease online. We will continue to put out more information as a response plan evolves. In the meantime, for more information on CWD and the Department's Management Plan, go to wdfw.wa.gov, forward slash CWD. And if you see what you suspect is the sick deer, elk, or moose, please report it to the department by going to wdfw.wa.gov/sickwildlife. Well, the people of hunters will continue to have water, but whether they're going to be happy about what it's going to cost them, that's kind of another thing. Back in March this year, the Superior Court appointed Stevens County as the receiver for the Hunter's Water District. Well, Stevens County will now be operating the Hunter's Water District. Well, what does that mean? Well, that means they have to come up with a fee schedule and a way to operate that water district. Stevens County Public Works have established preliminary recommended fees. There are 45 single resident connections. The monthly charge for water in hunters will be $80. There are two residential low pressure connections. They'll be paying $60 a month. The nine commercial hookups would pay $160 per month. The non-profit commercial, there are three of those would pay $80. There are six domestic group hookups. They would have a rate of $800 and outside residential of the immediate hunters would be $160. Then there would be additional fees if there is any excessive water usage or any water waste. Well, Stevens County has come up with a public hearing where people of hunters can make their comments. The county commissioners will be holding a hunters water district public hearing Monday, September 16th. That'll be 1.30 in the afternoon. They'll receive public comment on the proposed fee schedule for the new water rates, the billing and payment procedures. So if you are in the hunters area and these new water rates affect you, the public hearing is September 16th. The commissioner's office here in Colville, 1.30 in the afternoon. But some people in hunters may not be thrilled with the fee schedule that has been put together for the proposed fee schedule from the Stevens County public works folks. Well, until yesterday when it was pouring down rain and thunderstorms most of the day, a very interesting day, we were in split Croatia, old Yugoslavia. Now I had been to split two times previous, so I thought I knew what I was wanting to go look at. That was not the case. The last time I was to split, the total population was under 80,000. The ship pulled into the port at split and I didn't even recognize the place. Split has grown from around 80,000 to over 220,000 people. New apartment buildings all along the waterfront on several blocks back from the waterfront makes it where you don't even recognize this ancient city. We are talking about ruins, back to the Roman Empire, times of 30, 40, 50 AD. During the visit to split, it did go to a cathedral that was built in 1546, the original bell tower. The unique thing with this particular church, the bishops were all buried within the cathedral itself. They had the marble tomb covers on the floor with the particular names and dates and we're talking dates in the 1516 and 1700s here in this church. But overall, I thought it would be kind of a nice leisurely day in split, it was not. I took in the full day right up to late 30 at night when the time to be back on the ship was and went to number of archeological digs and ruins. The guide we went and saw one shopping center and she says they had to stop for six months because they started excavating the foundation for this shopping center and they started finding heads from statues that were back from the Roman Empire eras and this was right at the beginning of COVID. And so they stopped construction for a while and eventually they recovered some things and the government finally agreed while we seemed to have ruins everywhere around town, go ahead and build your shopping center, which they did. Split is an area that, again, if you're on a cruise, you're gonna see some great historical sites but you're also going to see the first town that I have seen really develop since I was there last. In fact, you know, a tremendous population growth and a lot of new, as the guide put it, very ugly modern apartment buildings, about four stories high and has helped the split population really increase. They have had a number of manufacturing plants for different industries be built right there at split and that has really helped their economy and it has really helped their population grow. Those little emergency shut off valves under your sink, the ones you probably have trouble getting to because of soap, window cleaner and dog shampoo hiding them and can you even turn them off if you need to? Los Angeles picked up two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. One more run to tie things up three all in the bottom of the seventh. And then along came the eighth inning. The Dodgers get three more runs. The mariners drop another one. Los Angeles Dodgers six, Seattle three. Well, you know, things look so good for the playoffs. And right now, the lights are getting dim. The mariners are not a good time to have a major slump. But six, three lost to the Dodgers. Mariner baseball on 92.1 KCRK.
