Gideon prepared a great number of men for war. The Lord knew they would become prideful if He gave the Midianites over to them. God reduced their number to 300. God miraculously conveyed His plan to Gideon, and they defeated the Midianites. Gideon killed those who refused to provide food for his army. Gideon made an ephod from the gold in the spoils of the Israelites. This garment was akin to the religious garments worn by the priests. The ephod was made to recognize what God did through Gideon and the Israelites. In time, the ephod became a thorn for Gideon and Israel because they began to admire the ephod to the point of worship.
