Welcome into another edition of Gwen and Chris Tony Gwen, Jr., Chris Ello, Matt Scravey, Padres, Get On The Board, and the first game of this four-game set against the Cardinals. And Chris, back to business as usual, it felt like on the road watching this team. They got a great start from Randy Vasquez. It got off. It's very similar to his other starts, but he maneuvered around some early traffic and found his field right around the fourth inning, got through six, which was huge because the Padres had almost-- the Padres' relievers had thrown almost 10 innings in the last two games. So to see Vasquez come out, get that kind of start was awesome, manning. Machado, big day, two from four, three RBIs. Kind of got the ship going in the right direction early. And yeah, man, it seemed like it was just business as usual for the pot. Yeah, I told everybody yesterday, and I've been telling them for a few days, I just don't think you need to worry about this team. I think they're this good. And you know, you're right, Tony. I mean, they got back out on the road and they just looked comfortable. But you know, give manning a lot of the credit. I mean, you've been around this long enough. Any time somebody pops a two-run homer deep over the center field fence to get you going in the top of the first inning, it just gives everybody a lift, gives everybody a confident feeling. And then I think equally, in the bottom of the first inning, manning makes that play on Arunato over in foul territory. One we've seen so many times, but if he doesn't make the play, they got two on and one out and the heart of their order coming up. And maybe they erase those two runs and you know, the momentum goes right back the other way. But you know, manning makes a great play there. And this to me just sets the tone not only for the game, but for the road trip. I do get the sense a little bit in watching and you were there Tony, of course, but I get the sense that the Cardinals, a little bit their spirit has been broken. They've fallen, you know, so far out of the playoffs now, they need a bit of a miracle to get back in it. - No one's going to the game now. - What was that? I mean, I've been watching Cardinals games forever. I've never seen an empty ballpark at the beginning like that. But I think this is a team right now. If you can get up on them early, I think you can just kind of put them to bed. And I thought the Padres sensed that and then they did that. So yeah, it was a piece of cake almost last night. - I don't know. I guess I had a different read. I think that team, they just were overwhelmed. But I thought they fought back. You know, the Padres got up early. They came right back and tied it. And so it didn't seem as though they were just rolling over. I just think once the Padres kind of hit them with the onslaught, then they kind of folded up. So, you know, I think that team is young enough to where, you know, you never know. They're going to keep fighting at least a little bit. But the Padres are just better. You know, I think that's really what it boils down to. The Padres are a better team than a lot of the teams they're playing right now. And that's not to sound like over the top brash about this team. But I think so often because we get to see them every day, we tend to see the flaws in them. But the bottom line is they're better than a lot of the teams that they are matching up against, especially in the second half. They are playing better, they are executing better. They're just doing everything better, quite frankly. And yesterday, you know, it didn't go over my head that, you know, Padres were up for. Mike Shields didn't mess around in that game. He went ahead and got it. Suarez came on in there and although he gave up one, he still came in there to get that win. And so, Padres, they're doing their thing, man. They're doing their thing. Well, Mike Show returned to St. Louis, and that was a success. And, you know, I think his whole attitude going in was one of, you know, relaxation and saying that he was at peace with everything. I think one of the big reasons why he's at peace is with everything is because of the way the guys are playing. And, you know, he's sending a good team out there. And you talked about you don't want to sound brash, et cetera. Padres don't want to act brash. But it's clear to me in watching them that they do feel like they're just playing well right now. And so, you know, it's carrying over to the way the game has played. You know, when somebody doesn't get the job done, and I think yesterday it was bases loaded one out and Bogart say, I forget he popped up. No, he hit the dribbler. Right, he hit the dribbler. Catcher gets the force at home. So now bases loaded two outs. You could end up with nothing. And here comes who else, you know, Jimmy Jackson Merrill. And, Tony's new nickname, but, you know, Jimmy Jackson line shot the left field. And, you know, you talk about a blow. I mean, that's two to one to four to one. With a two out hit, he ends up with three more RBIs. This guy, you know, and on and on ago, the beat goes on. So, you know, if somebody doesn't do it right now, somebody else is confident that they'll pick it up. And, you know, we've been talking about this during the whole run, they're 25 and eight now. This has been going for 33 games. This is a really long stretch. This is well over a month. We're looking at five weeks of playing this kind of baseball. You said it yesterday, Tony. Very hard to sustain this for this long. You know, you can win 12 out of 16. Maybe that's a couple of weeks. You can win, you know, nine out of 11. You don't see 25 and eight very often, but that's the kind of beauty of this team right now. They're hot and they know it. - Yeah, no, they know it. I just, you know, you bring up Jimmy Jackson Meryl. This guy is just as cold as ice, man. He came up in that spot, hit the hole on the left side, the five, five hole on the line. He just is a, he's fun to watch, man. He's fun to watch and he just keeps going. He ain't, the thing I love about it, I think I've said this before, he ain't paying attention to none of, or at least he might be paying attention. He ain't letting none of this outside noise affect him at all. He is just playing the game, the way it's supposed to be played, bringing some energy every game. Yeah, man, the Padres are moving in the right direction. Now, tonight they'll have a little bit of a different challenge. I thought, they just wore Gibson down. Gibson is already one of those dudes who's just not gonna give in. He, he fall behind, he's still spinning it up there. Three run, three run on the edges. And the Padres just waited him out. They waited him out, hit the mistakes that were offered to him. Tonight will be a little bit different. Miles, Michael has got different stuff. He's a little bit more aggressive, I think, than Gibson is, so we'll see how the Padres adapt to that. Of course, on the flip side, they got Dylan C's going today. And you know, depending on the type of stuff he has, it could be a long day for the Cardinals' offense. Yeah, you think? I mean, look, C's gave up nine hits in his last outing, which shocked me. I mean, that's, I think it was a season high, but he also managed to negotiate six and a third innings and only allowed two runs. So he ended up with a, with a quality start. And, you know, to me, that's impressive. Anytime you don't have your best stuff and you still, you know, get a quality start out of it, you know, good job by Dylan C's last time out. By the way, that was his first, and this surprised me, but it was his first quality start since the no hitter. So, you know, he might, I don't know, I think he's having a great year. Michael, I agree with you, Tony. He's the kind of guy that can't give the Padres a little trouble, 'cause you really, you can't wait him out. Yeah, I think you gotta go attack mode on him, 'cause he's gonna be over the plate. I think he's gonna, he's hit a bull, but not if you get behind the count and you're, you know, waiting around too long. So, I think you're right. And I think that's what we'll see tonight. Michael has did pitch a shutout ball his last time out against Milwaukee, but prior to that, he was knocked around pretty good. But I think he's always kind of given the Padres a little bit of a tough time. So, you know, I look forward to the challenge tonight. I'm sure the Padres just look forward to the challenge the way they're going right now. So. They just look forward to going out and playing. It feels like it doesn't, it doesn't really matter what the challenge is in front of them. It seems like right now. So, Padres, keep on rolling out. Did you guys see, I don't know, I mean, this popped up, I think right before the game, Alias Diaz. I did. I can't see that. Former catcher for the Rockies. Padres signed him to a minor league deal. Not exactly sure what that looks like, how that is, but. I'll tell you how I took it. It's certainly, I would guess, it's certainly kind of a sign to Luis. That's what I thought. Exactly what I thought, Tony. Diaz is what he, last year was an all-star. He was the all-star game MVP last year. That's right. Hit game, he's not, it wasn't like he was bad this year. He wasn't as good as he was last year, but. He was hurt. He was hurt and hurt quite a bit. And they ended up having a young guy they wanted to bring up Drew Romo. And where the Rockies going, they might as well bring up the young guy and see what he can do. So Diaz pays the price. That couldn't be the more, Tony. I mean, AJ Preller, the greatest motivator. Was it, I think Bobby Knight, one of his classic quotes, one of many. Was he throwing a chair while he said it? It was not. And what he said, but thanks for interrupting me again. What he said was, the world's greatest motivator is your butt on that bench. And it's a way that only Bobby Knight can say it. It's kind of hardcore, but. It's true. I think it's true. And Luis Camposano hasn't really produced a whole lot even coming off the bench. So you look over your shoulder, I think it lights a fire. What does that look like for a baseball player, though? Like, how do you just all of a sudden think, "All right, I need to start hitting." Like, I don't know exactly because you can't just make it happen automatically. Right. And it's not as though you didn't already know that. It's just there's a sense of urgency. And sometimes that can be a Kickstarter and somebody getting going. Sometimes it's the thing that you don't drown them. Or sometimes there is no effect. It's the same. And so, you know, I think that's just kind of the nature of how this business goes, unfortunately. And AJ Preller, you know, say what you will, but he's done a great job of creating competition within this team this year. And I think it's one of the reasons why guys have performed so well when they've had the opportunity. 'Cause there's another guy to put in if they're not doing it. So I don't think there's any question about that. No question at all. All right, we're often rolling here. At the short show here today, more going to Chris on the other side. All right. (upbeat music) - Hi, we're off enrolling here. - Hello. - Tony Goode, Jr. is in St. Louis, where he didn't give us a report in the first segment. Tony's running around here. We'll be back for the big five. - In about 10 minutes, but we didn't add, he didn't get us a weather report, but I heard it was hotter and stickier today than it was yesterday. - Where'd you hear that from? - I thought it was you. - Yeah, it was. - Told me that. - Weatherman Scravey over here. - That's what it was you. - Yeah, it was. - It was. - Let me look at the real feel right now. - I must admit to everybody out there, it's pretty rare that I go on record with you as my only source. - That's not very nice. - But I just did that. - That's not very nice. - The real feel right now for-- - What's the story? - It's 99 degrees and it feels like 108. - 108. - I honestly, look, if you know who you are in San Diego, you're listening right now, you know who you are. Stop complaining about our weather. Really? - No, yeah. - I mean, we spend so much, I mean, look, my wife is right near the top of the list, so I'm not picking on anyone-- - What's she complaining about? - I don't know. It's too hot, it's too cold, it's humid, windy, it's cloudy, it's always something. - I mean, she grew up in Denver. - I know, this is way better. - Yeah. - Way better, she moved here because she didn't like living there, you know? - It's all the warming, Chris. - We all complain about it though in San Diego, we spend so much time and it's like in St. Louis, it feels like it's 108. Oh, God, who wants to play a game in those conditions today? - I kept looking at the fans behind home plate last night and all of them were like fanning themselves with whatever piece of paper they can get. - That's what we're saying in the first segment. Where were the fans last night? I mean, in St. Louis supposed to have the greatest fans in the history of the sport, which means they go, you know, show up, you know, live or die with this team. The stands were almost empty when that game started last night. They ended up with 28,000, which I still think is a pretty low total for the greatest fans in the history of the sport. - Paid attention. - I'm saying though, they didn't even have 28,000. - Oh, exactly. - I mean, we're getting 40 pretty regularly here at Petco and realize the Padres are more in contention than the Cardinals, but still, I was a little surprised. I think the folks in St. Louis have pretty much given up the season on this team and, you know, Tony disagreed. That's, you know, he's there. So he's got a better feel than I do, but you and I saw the same thing last night and I thought once Manny hit the home run, the Cardinals just kind of went through the motions the rest of the way. I thought we had them all night. I never felt much push from the Cardinals. I got some hits here and there, but I think that team, you get a couple ahead on them and they're gonna go away. They're kind of, they're done. Aaron Otto's not even the lineup tonight. - Did he? - He's taking a night off. He went 0 for five last night, never hurts my feelings to see that. And, you know, Manny threw him out on a brilliant gold glove type winning play, but, I mean, Goldschmidt's bat in seventh. - I know what happened to him. - What, what, did, no one out, Aaron Otto get up one day and say I have aged a little bit and I'm going to play like I've aged a little bit. - Yeah, look at his stats. 14 home runs about 50, 60 RBIs. - Not even close. - He's nowhere near to what he once was. He actually had a 24 game on base streak going into the game last night, but he didn't get it to 25 'cause he didn't get on base last night. Padre lineup for tonight is out. Do you care? - Yeah. - To pass it along. - Yeah. - To pass it along to the helpless. Arise will be at first base tonight. - Okay. - Pro far's in left. Pro far got hit by another pitch last night. - He did. - Another curve ball. So you can't, I know everybody's upset. We gotta do something. You can't retaliate when they're hitting you with curve balls. They might, even if they're hitting you on purpose, a curve ball doesn't really hurt. So you just take your base. Pro far laughs, gets up and runs down to first base for like the 19th or 20th time this year. He leads the league. - Although I will say the dive was a little dramatic, but I also don't have that ball actually coming at me. - Yeah, right. Well, what happens is it kind of takes your legs out from under you. But you're right. It seemed like he augmented it a little bit. Croninor's DHing tonight. Manny's at third. Bogart's at second. Meryl's in center. Peralta's in right. Campuzano's catching. Go back to him in a second. Mason McCoy. Once again, a shortstop. I don't think Kim's eligible to come off the injured list until this weekend. - I think, did he get hurt? He got hurt on a Saturday. Let me look. Mike Schill, he got hurt on a Sunday afternoon in Colorado. But I don't think he went on the injured list until-- - But I think they can-- - Like if it's an active-- - Well, let me look. - Maybe he's due to come off a little sooner than the weekend. 'Cause Mike Schill said he was gonna be in St. Louis soon. Hey, look at this E.S. joining the team. - Hold on, Chris. I typed in injured list Padres. - Yes. - E.S.P.N. says Padre manager Mike Schill said Monday on 97.3. - Oh, okay. - That Kim is slated to join the club in St. Louis on Tuesday. - Today's Tuesday. - Yeah, but he went on the 10-day I.L. August-- - It doesn't tell me. - Doesn't tell you, no. - It was Sunday. It was a couple of Sundays ago. So whenever that was. - Sunday, 8 at 18. - Okay, so that's-- - 8 at 18. So the day's day nine. So tomorrow would be day 10. - So he could come back off the I.L. - Mason McCoy's, you know, haven't really noticed him. Which is probably a good thing. I mean, if you're filling in a shortstop in the major leagues, one of the nicest things somebody can say about you is I haven't really noticed the guy. He hasn't hurt the team. - No. - Hasn't kicked any balls. He's made every play over there that he's needed to make. He's come through with a couple of hits here and there. So, you know, thumbs up for him. Now, going back to Campusano, we talked about it in the open. I think the signing of Diaz, the former All-Star from the Rockies, it's got to be a direct message to Campusano, honestly. That's what I thought. I was like, why would they need another catcher? - Yeah, well, because Campusano can't get a hit. I mean, he has been slumping. Campusano, I really like him. I like him more than most of you do out there. And a lot of people don't think he can field. I think he does a great job blocking balls. I think he calls a good game. He's gutty catcher, takes a beating back there, keeps on, you know, hanging in. But that said, he's been in a slump since, like, the end of April. He had 300 something in April. - I don't remember that. - He's a 220 something, very rarely contributing at all. But then I go back to, what do they actually want out of their catcher position? Because coming into the year, it was Campusano, it was Higashiyoka. Neither, no one knew Kyle Higashiyoka was going to hit 50-0 runs. So they, if they said they knew-- - They did. - They're lying. - They must have come into the season thinking, "All right, we're not going to get a lot out of our catcher position." - But I disagree with you. I think they thought they were going to get 15 home runs or so out of Campusano. - Okay, that could be true for sure. - I really believe that. - Yeah, I believe that too. - I think they came into the season and they thought Campusano had a good 260, maybe pushed 270 if he was lucky, and hit 15 to 20 home runs. He's got eight home runs, he's hitting 230. And as I said, he was a whole lot better in April. The end of April, Campusano was hitting, well, he was down to 278, but he was on the 300s for a while there. Anyway, I, maybe either that or, there's no other reason why they would have signed DS. There's none. - There's no reason. - Other than to put some pressure on Campusano for him to perform. - Or carry, they're not going to carry three casters. - No! - They need too many-- - They did that two years ago. - They did, you're right. - And two of them never got off the bench once. - I know. - One of those guys was Campusano. - It was, yeah. - The other guy was our friend, Alfaro. Remember when, and Nolan played every single minute of every playoff game. - I remember that. - The other two guys never played. It was a weird dynamic. - JW says on the chat, "Can't be just finished a 162 career pro game. "17 home or 76 RBIs." - That's great, give him more at bats. - Okay, look, I'm not disagreeing with anything. I'm a Campusano guy, but I see one home run this month. I saw two in July. I saw one in June. I haven't seen much. And I saw an 0 for 28 in there. It hasn't been great for Campusano. Hagash Yoka's been the better option. - Yes. - And I think that, Trellor's not leaving any stone unturned. - No. - Man, he's gonna go ahead and sign Diaz just in case. He's been so in the shadows this year, AJ Preller, that I think it is working. - It's good for him. - It's good because he needs to spend more time there. He, because the team is playing better than ever. The team has assembled better than ever. I think AJ Preller, as we've said many times. - And it feels, yeah, sorry to interrupt, it feels like he's leaving everybody alone. Whether or not he is, I don't know. I'm not behind the scenes, but it seems like AJ Preller is letting the manager manage, the players play, the coaches coach, and it's working. Instead of Preller being in there every two seconds with a suggestion, which is what I felt like was the case under Bob Melvin or with Bob Melvin. - Yeah, there are some, there are some frayed nerves there. - There certainly was. The Astros, by the way, today picked up Jason Hayward, who was let go by the Dodgers a couple of days ago. So that is the landing place for Hayward, if you're wondering. All right, we'll take a quick break here, bottom of the hour. When we come back, we got another interesting big five for you and we'll get you caught up on everything else going on in sports, short program today. Little after 3.30, we'll turn it back over to Sam Levitt for the pregame show. I'm shocked by this news because Scraeby, after his pregame and postgame performance last night, is now a perfect 3-0. I would think that the Cardinals, I would think that the Padres front office would be calling the radio station, demanding that you be on again tonight. - You know, I received a phone call last night from the air groupner. - Yeah, I told me how great I was on the first game show. - I'm sure you got a call. Hey, if Sammy Lev loses his first game back. - You're back in? - Yeah. - So there's two people that the pressure's on today. Camp Usano and Sammy Levitt. - I'm just joking, air groupner did not call me and tell me that. - Both looking over their shoulders as things go along here, going in Chris 97.3, the fan. - When you think about businesses that are selling through the roof like aloe, all birds or skims, sure, you think about a great product to cool brand and brilliant marketing. Now Tony, with you Darvish coming back soon-ish, do you think Randy Vasquez would be good out of the bullpen? - Yeah, maybe, yeah, that possibly, I mean, he pissed a little bit out of the bullpen at time, to this year. - I'm not sure, that's a spot that you wanna make sure you're not breaking in a guy there. And I'm not sure that he plays, well, he plays well as a reliever the more I think about it, because in really all of his starts, he kind of gets off to a little bit of a slow start. As a reliever, you don't have that luxury, especially come playoff time. You're gonna need to come in and be able to get guys immediately. So as I processed that, I'm not sure he would be a good option out of the bullpen. He certainly had a great start last night, but he didn't really settle in until like the fourth. And so I think that might be a little bit of an issue if you try to move him to the bend. - Yeah, I don't think that there's gonna be room for Randy Vasquez in the bullpen. As long as everybody's healthy. I mean, I'm looking at, you know, the guys I'm now calling the Magnificent Seven in the bullpen. - You really love this Magnificent Seven. - Isn't it? It's working, and don't be critical of something that's working. But, you know, I think you got your three, you know, high leverage, you know, end of the game, guys. I think you got more to hone and Estrada to set that up. I think you've got Hoing, you've got Matsui. I think hopefully you get Wandi Peralta back to give you four lefties, four righties. I don't, you know, maybe if you're gonna have a ninth reliever on your roster for the postseason, maybe Vasquez would be that guy, but, yeah, I agree with Tony. I mean, you don't wanna break him in at this point. So, you know, to me, it's a tip of the cap. Thank you very much, Randy Vasquez. They needed that start last night as we discussed earlier. I mean, they, you know, they had to go a lot of innings in the bullpen over the weekend. And for him to give them six innings in a win like that, that was big. And, you know, he's just gonna go along the list, the long list of guys that have contributed in their own way this season. I'm a big Randy Vasquez fan. It's all right. I don't want it to him to be left off the roster when it comes playoff time. Yeah. So, I think there are big Matt Waldron fans too. I don't know that he's gonna be able to be on a roster too. You get 26 guys. The Padres use that bench that they have and they'll need it, right? So, you're not to, you assume no one's coming off of that. There's probably what, one spot up for grabs. Maybe, you know, I can't see them going with three bench players. So, that leaves you with eight relievers and there's just not gonna be room. I mean, listen, there is the chance that Peralta can't get himself ready by that time. Like, he comes back and he doesn't throw the ball well, but I'm assuming that he's going to and I'm gonna assume that everybody else that's been in the bullpen continues to do what they do. I don't know that you have room for anybody else. - Number four. - Call the world. - By the way, I'm so uncomfortable having this conversation because it ain't done yet, so, but fine. - It can change 15 different times between now and then. - Right, I'm doing it for the sake of a show. Thank you, and Tony, no one holds you to things you say now, and then if-- - That's not true, you know when I told her you did something good. - Yes, definitely that's true. - You said that Vasquez wasn't even gonna take the roster. - I wouldn't say that to you, but I wouldn't say that to you. - Oh, okay, you'd let Tony off the hook, but me, you would say it too. - Yes, I can see Vasquez pitching in the playoffs and you coming up with a, do you remember three and a half months ago? You said-- - Here's the clip. - I just remember Barry Zito being left off with Giants roster, and that was a big deal, and he was fine, so, and the team won the World Series. It was all good. - Number four. - NFL owners are expected to vote to change the league's ownership structure today, say that 10 times fast, allowing private equity firms to purchase limited stakes in NFL teams, according to Adam Schefter. The owners flew to Minnesota for a special session called by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, where they expect, are expected, to approve allowing the sale up to 10% of a stake in a franchise to a select number of private equity firms the league has vetted over the past few months, a move to allow private equity firms to invest as limited partners could free up cash for owners to pursue projects, such as stadium renovations, man, I can't read, and would represent a large shift in how the league has historically operated. Wow, Chris, do you care about this at all? - You wanted a shorter, big five today, right? I cut that down from about 10 minutes to five minutes, Chris, 'cause I can answer this one in one word. - Oh, I see where you're going with this. - Ask me again. - I'm nervous. - Do you care about this at all? - No. - You should, but, okay, I get it. - No, I don't. I mean, they have so much money, and it sounds like they're just bringing in more people with more money, so. - Don't give me the excuse of we're gonna put money into the stadium when we know they're not going to do that. - These are people out there that could be filling our potholes in San Diego. - No more potholes. - No more potholes, instead they're taking equities in billion dollar franchises. This is all way over my head. - It's just rich people getting richer. - That's right, so yes, I'm gonna go back to my original answer. - No. - All right, Tony, do you care about this at all? - Not really. I hope that they end up doing exactly what they say they're gonna do, which is free up money for renovations, and we'll know that if they're not asking us for it, you know? - The money to do it, Kansas City. - So, I'm gonna hold, I'm gonna take them at their word for now until they prove me otherwise, and they certainly have done that on many occasions, but outside of that, I really don't care. - This should be great news actually, Scrabby, 'cause with all of this money coming in, they ought to be able to lower ticket prices, lower beer prices, hot dog prices, parking, and all of that, and not charge full boat for pre-season games, but you know darn well the NFL owners aren't gonna do any of that. No, they're gonna raise the prices, of course. - At least according to what Scrabby read, and you know, there certainly could be more. They have only said that they would use it for renovations in stadium stuff like that, so I'll take that, because a lot of times what they end up doing is like trying to get it passed in some type of legislation where we have to end up paying it, you know what I'm saying? So, let's see, let's see if this is truly correct because there would be some nice accommodations for these expense, at least for the, you make it better so that at least what we're paying for these tickets seems to make a little bit more sense. - Yeah, so everybody ought to get at least a lazy boy lounge chair to sit in with the prices we're paying. - Hey, no, we made stadium upgrades, what are we talking about? We took out the troughs and we put in the urinals. - There you go, there you go. (laughing) - You know what they'll end up doing is just redesigning the owner's boxes and stuff like that to make it more comfortable for all of those people. - Oh, the troughs. - Let's hope that's not true. Let's hope it's not true. - They'll put gold-flated troughs into the owner's shop. (laughing) - I already can't read, so this one's gonna be tough, guys. The fallout of Scott Boris Klein, it's not exactly having the best free agency, the last offseason is starting to produce more information. Jordan Montgomery was recently demoted to the bullpen and was asked about whether or not the red socks were close to signing him before he got his deal with the Diamondbacks. He told the Boston Herald, quote, "I had a Zoom call with the red socks, "that's really all I know. "It went good, I don't know, obviously, "Boris kind of butchered it, "so I'm trying to move on from the offseason "and try to forget it," end quote. Blake Snell was asked about it and he said, quote, "My experience with Scott has been great." He told me everything that was happening, all the offers I got, so for him to just get bashed for what I believe is false, that's not fair at all, I really strongly believe that, end quote. Boris himself said, quote, "I saw what Jordan said, "I know what it is to be frustrated with this game. "As a former player, I feel for him, "but I'm also a lawyer with obligations "to my clients, including former ones, "so I cannot discuss what happened, "or the decisions Jordan made unless he gives me permission." End quote. Didn't know Scott Boris was a player, did not know that. - Yeah, he snuck that in there, didn't he? I don't know where he played either, to be honest with you. - Tony, do you know? - What did he say? - He said he was a player. - Yeah, he said, "As a former player, I feel for him." - Yeah, well, I was a former player too. (laughing) - Didn't say what-- - Wait, let me go. - A former player too. - You are too, great. - I'm gonna look this up, but Tony, you're up here. - I wanna look that up too, 'cause that'll make sense. - Do you believe Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery? - Here's what I do believe when you-- - Political answer coming. - When you, as a player, sign on to be with Scott Boris, you have one thing in mind, and that is getting top dollar. With that comes risk, that it may not work out. So to answer your question, I believe both, right? I think it's all in the eye of the beholder. There's no doubt that the year Jordan has had has contributed to his feelings in terms of what happened with him and Scott. I think the difference is how Blake is kind of viewing it from his standpoint, 'cause he didn't get off to a great start either. He got off to a pretty terrible start to begin the season, but he's figured out a way to turn his ship in the right direction. And so I think as a player, man, I don't necessarily blame Scott as a former player. I don't necessarily blame Scott because you know what you're getting into when you bring him on as an agent. He is gonna go for the top dollar. And if you're not guiding that in the way you should, these are the things that can happen and you gotta live with it. You know what I'm saying? There are much safer options out there in terms of agents that won't necessarily pursue that top tier dollar. But you know what you're getting into when you bring on Scott boards. And so the answer to the question, I kinda agree with how, 'cause I read both of the articles and I agree with how Blake is looking at it. Like I knew what I was getting into in his case. He said he got all the information and what happened happened. He can't control the market. He didn't get what was reported in terms of the New York Yankees. He said he had two deals. They were both exactly the same. He chose the one that he felt best suited him. And he lived with that. He's probably gonna end up making himself some money on the backside of this because he's done is proving that he can keep doing what he's doing over the past couple of years, whereas Jordan didn't have that success. And he's probably kinda like, "Yo, this is not how I thought it was gonna happen." - I did look up Scott Boris and his playing career. He was very accomplished actually. The Pacific University of the Pacific, he's in their athletics hall of fame for baseball. He played four years of minor league baseball for the Cardinals and Cubs. Knee problems short in his career and he retired. - A likely story. - Chris, you know all of my times to explaining how I got cut after my sophomore year. And I never once have mentioned knee problems, elbow problems. Can't anybody just admit maybe they weren't quite good enough. - Actually it looks like he was pretty good. All right, whatever. - And it's about to say, if you got the pro ball, you would. - You got the pro ball and he's in the hall of fame for the Cubs. - Okay. - All right, Chris. Do you believe Blake Sneller joined Montgomery? - Yeah, having said all that, Tony's 100% on this one. Unless Scott Boris called Jordan Montgomery and demanded that he become a client, then Jordan Montgomery. - You will be my client. - Yeah. Then Jordan Montgomery has absolutely nothing to say here. Absolutely nothing. - It's all on him. - And it is. This is another example of people looking everywhere, but the mirror to try to come up with excuses for why they didn't play as well, so. - Yeah. - Tony hit it, man. You hire Boris. This is what you could get. And Jordan, I'm sure knew the risks and he should just, you know, pitch out of the bullpen and shut up. - Right. And listen, it doesn't mean that he's not clearly entitled to change courses in terms of who his representation was. - Or guy. And he did. - But, and he, and he did. But, you know, it's tough for me to feel bad when, like that's, that is a risk when you sign with Scott. No doubt. - Number two. I saw an article titled, quote, "Jets Aaron Rogers looks old rival coach says." Quote, "He did not look good," end quote. And so, of course I clicked to see what was going on. Here's what the rival head coach said to Mike Sando of the Athletic. He said, quote, "You go back and you watch those first four plays before he got hurt. He did not look good," the coach said. "He looks old. If they can't protect him and they can't run the football, it'll just be what you saw late stages in Green Bay. He became ineffective. I'm looking at what he is, not who he is." End quote. So I found this article very misleading. - This is an active coach who said this? Apparently so, one rival head coach. One rival head coach. So this is a misleading article title because I thought he said that about this year, but no, he was talking about four plays from last year. Anyway, Chris, what kind of year do you think Aaron Rogers has? - I hope he has a terrible year just because of the Miami connection. - Yes, I would love to see him, you know, struggle mightily, but I'm not convinced he's gonna struggle mightily. You know, I think the Jets have done, you know, looks like on paper, they've done a good job of putting weapons around him. You know, I think it was kind of a freak thing to get injured on the fourth play of the season. Happened last year, fifth play. So, you know, I look for Aaron Rogers to be problematic. You know, I don't see how he can be 2010 Super Bowl winning Aaron Rogers anymore. That's a long time ago, but-- - You haven't done ayahuasca. - That's right, but I-- (laughing) - He's a, that's right. - That's true, and I'm not going to, but I do think he's gonna be less than the greatest Aaron Rogers, but, you know, I think he's still, you got a concern or so. If you don't prepare to play Aaron Rogers, he could slice and dice you. So, you know, I think Mike McDaniel's ought to take back what he just said there. I'm blaming him for saying that. - Wow. - Mike's trying to get under, trying to get under his skin, didn't he get under his skin? - I mean, he is like a totally different person now since he moved to Miami. If you've seen those memes floating around. There you go. - Tony, what kind of year do you think Aaron Rogers has? - I think he has a good year. I think this is a bad, bad mistake by whoever this rival is. - He's gonna find out who it was. - I'm pretty sure he's gonna figure out who it was. So, let's just wait for that first 325-yard game from him and we'll be able to kind of put it together on our own in terms of who it was that said it. You know, I think he's gonna have a good year, man. - First of all, I don't know how you came to that conclusion at the four plays. - I'm serious, that seems a little crazy. - That was ridiculous. That seems absurd to me. So, yeah, man, I think, you know, I doubt it. I've taken McDaniel's off the list. - No, I don't think he said that. I don't think he was here. It was one of these other stuffs you guys. - Oh, I know who it is. McCarthy. - Who's in their division? - It's Mike McDaniel. - No, he said rival. - He said rival. So, I mean, who is, that's rival, you know? Do they even have a rival? - I don't think so. - I don't know. - I don't think so. - Either way, I don't think it was a wise decision. I think he has a good year. - Number one. - I had a situation yesterday morning and I didn't know what to do, so I need you guys to help me out with this. I'm acquaintances with a guy from the dog park. And we chat here and there, but yesterday on the dog walk, I saw him walking over and we stopped to small talk a bit, but here's the issue. As I was trying to wrap up the small talk, he kept walking with me and we ended up walking the whole way together. Now, dog walking is one of my happy places. Not because of the dogs, but I don't listen to any music. I don't listen to podcasts. I don't even bring my phone half the time. It's just to think about what crazy things I'm gonna say on the show. I didn't get to do that yesterday, so that was terrible. But, Tony, you're up first. How do I get out of this next time? (laughs) - Oh. (laughs) - Almost with the swear word. - Scravey with the hand on the button there. - Yeah, man, I don't know. I don't know how you get out of this one. I wasn't gonna swear, by the way. - No, I'm not. - Yeah. - No, I don't know, man. The only way to do this is just, you're gonna have to be kind of a jerk without being like me, you know? - No, I can do that. - Hey, man, I'm just looking to walk by myself today. Sorry. I don't know something along those lines. I can't think of another way. You could change up your times, maybe. Go a little bit earlier or later. - That's a good point. - Try to miss them. - That's a good point. That's really good. - Otherwise, you're gonna have to meet this head on, buddy. - Oh, Chris. - Yeah, that's uncomfortable. - My best advice to you right now is go get a pack, or a whole, I'm sorry. - Go on demand on your cable and find a whole bunch of curvier enthusiasms, and look up how Larry David would treat this. 'Cause that's what you need. You need to channel a little Larry David right now. - A little bit like Larry David. - That's your only hope. - Okay, that's a good advice from both of you. - I think so. Just give it the old stop and chats. Just, sorry, I don't do them anymore. - I was like, all right, come on, Lucky. Come on, Kelly. Come on, quirky. And the guy was like, oh, I'll walk with you. I'm like, no! - No! No! (laughing) - That's a tough one. That's a tough one. - That's a big five. - Larry David, you're only savior. - We got another half hour of Gwen and Chris before we send it to Sam Levitt. He is back, so stick with us here in '97, through the fan. - All right, welcome back, Ang. We head into what is kind of the final hour. Final 40 minutes or so. Happy 40 minutes to ya. Gwen and Chris, Sandy goes number one, sports station 97.3. The fan, Chris Elo here, Scrabie alongside, in the Odyssey Palace. We also should welcome into studio today. - Scrabie. - Yes. - Friend of ours, friend of mine. It's popped in here. Grant, Jenna, he's got a city connect, New York Mets, Jersey on. - Yeah, I would show him on camera, but I'm not sure if he wants to be shown on camera. - Well, you have to get an okay for him. - Oh, he doesn't care, so he doesn't mind. - He doesn't mind. There he is in here. - The best part is it. - Go ahead. - Well, here's the thing with Grant, Jenna. He, his mom and my wife, lifelong friends. - Yeah, sure. - They've known each other for a hundred years. So, Lori's friend is visiting and Grant is with her on a trip, he's thinking about going to San Diego State, maybe in UCSD, USD, he's looking at all the campuses. So we're wishing him the best of luck. Now, my wife said he was gonna come over and he wanted to come into the studio today and hang out with us for, you know, a few hours. I said, well, if he doesn't mind being bored, he's welcome. - We can sell it. - I know, and so he wanted to come over, but here's what nobody told me, Scrappy, that he would arrive at my front door wearing a Buffalo Bills hat. - Oh, it's amazing. - I can't believe I'm even talking to this kid. - When you and Grant walked in and you called out the hat, this is what I did. (audience applauding) - You applauded him. You applauded him. Anything to get at the Dolphins. - Yeah. - I know, I can't believe I'm being seen with anyone wearing a Buffalo Bills hat. And, you know, you're taking great joy in this, Scrappy. - I am. - But I want to know, if he walked in with a Seahawks hat, you probably would have booted him right out of the studio. - I would have, I tell you, Chris, I said the Seahawks aren't that good. You don't worry about the Seahawks anymore. - No, they're not the Legion of Boom anymore. - No, they are not. - But anyway, we welcome Grant in today. Thank you for hanging out with us. And Tony of course is in St. Louis. He'll call the game with, you know, Jesse Agler tonight. - Yes. - He gets in the way in about 40 minutes with Sam Levitt's pregame. - I have a chat I want to get to before we get into the day of the game. - Question, I believe it is. - Yeah, Jed is chatting this. I'm sorry, Jed, you were trying to call in, but I was busy. He is asking this. Just wanted to ask Chris how all the Padres fans were upset about selling the farm at the deadline we're doing today. - Great question. - Jed, you're a guy after my own heart. - Great question. - 'Cause you know that I've said it all along and a million times. I would trade anybody in the farm system for a chance to win a championship. And I do think this team has a chance to win a championship. Would they be in this position? Here's the thing that Jed's bringing up. The Padres traded 12 of the top 15 prospects in their farm system this year. 12 of the top 15. It's pretty much gutting the system. - Yeah. - Now the two of the three guys that are left are Salas and DeVries. - Which they're untouchable. - Right, so they still have something left, but the depth beyond that is obviously gonna be, you know, surely tested after everyone they traded away. But in those places, they have a rise, they have cease, they now have Tanner Scott, they have Jason Adam, they, I, you know, I think you do it. I mean, if the Padres, like, this is what Jed's saying and I agree with them. The Padres are riding very high right now. So there's absolutely no reason to miss anybody who traded away. If we get a parade, we don't have any wood around here. - I'm knocking on the table, but yeah. - Knock on some more from Micah. But if they ever got a parade, you wouldn't care about it, what it cost. - I would challenge, and I know that people are gonna call me on this, but I would challenge people to name the prospects that win. - Right, I know I can't. - You know, I can't do it. - I got one of them. - I don't know any of them. - Grand Poly is one of them. - Grand Poly, they let him go. Yeah, hardly miss him. - Right, okay. - Snelling win. - Snelling was a big name, he went. - I think. Somebody on the chat can give us, of the 12 that they traded, though, how many can you truly name? But I mean, you can all name Cease and Rise and everything that they've gotten in return from these guys. - The ASS ending to the Adam Scott with that. - Would you please? - Can I ask you another question, or do you want to do your daily game? - Sure, give me one more. - So the hot topic on the post-game show last night was why did Mike Shilt, well, I guess maybe I made it a hot topic. Why did Mike Shilt use Tanner Scott and Robert Suarez in a seven to three game? You know, ended up seven to four because Suarez gave up that run. But we've seen this before with the series specifically in Kansas City, where they had to use Robert Suarez and then he wasn't available for that Sunday game. - Then that Sunday game, I know. - And then they lost because of that. I don't see anybody making a big deal. Maybe I made too big of a deal, but I think it's a big deal. - He was asked about it. - Yeah. - After the game last night. - We listened to it. - Well, he was asked about it. I believe Kevin A.C. asked him because there was a quote in Kevin A.C.'s article today. - Okay. - Referring to that exact question. And when Mike Shilt said, if you're up by four runs and you're playing on a road and you're starting a road trip like this, you get the game. You just get it. You get the game, you go get it. - I agree with that. - That was his thinking. Now here's where I agree, I see why you brought it up 'cause you don't normally bring your top two guys in with a four run lead. - Yeah. - But in this case, they did Tanner Scott pitched the eighth and Suarez pitched the ninth. But here's the difference from what happened in Kansas City earlier. When they used Suarez in a four run game and then after two or three games where they really needed him, then he had to rest and they couldn't use him. But now they have Jason Adam. They have Tanner Scott. So if it came down to it and they get two or three save games in a row and Suarez needs to maybe rest one, I have no problem putting Jason Adam in to close a game. - No, or Jason or Scott. - Or Scott, right. - But Jason Adam, yeah, I wouldn't see him close a game. Like 'cause Jeremiah Strada, for whatever reason, he's fallen out of favor. - He's E-M, he hasn't been as effective. - No, and he got sick, I feel bad for him because he got sick after COVID. He got COVID really bad. - I think he got COVID, yeah. - And then he got sick this year and lost a bunch of weight and he just hasn't been the same guy. - Look, Mike Schultz got so many options in that bullpen. He can afford to go ahead and get a game as he said last night. I'm up for, I'm winning this game. I'm not taking any chances. - And so it was. But yeah, you're right, Scrabby. There's a bit of a risk in doing what he did. 'Cause if they need Suarez tonight. - I don't know if he's available. - He's pitched two days in a row. - Well, he's pitched three in a row before, but if he's not available, Jason Adam, man, bring that guy in. I mean, he's basically since he's been here. - Yeah, and just for the record, I agree with Mike Schultz to go get the win at this point in the season. I was just bringing it up because we hadn't seen it before. - Now that's a fair question, fair question. - All right. Here's a couple of other quick baseball notes that I wanted to throw at you. We'll do our daily gambit shortly. We talk about the Rookie of the Year award all the time. That's all we're like, you know-- - We're hyper-focused today. - Hyper-focused, addicted to Jackson Merrill winning the Rookie of the Year. - Jimmy Jackson Merrill. - Jimmy Jackson Merrill, as Tony likes to call him out. But one race we don't talk about is Cy Young, really in the National League, you know, MVPs have been pretty determined, right? It's going to be show, hey, it's going to be judge. I don't see how that can be any different. But here's something that was brought up and I don't think it's the worst suggestion I've ever heard. For NL Cy Young award, right now Chris Sale, 14 and three, 2.62, he would seem to be the guy. He's got a 1.02 whip. He's got the best war of any top-notch starting pitcher. - I don't even want to hear that's attention. - I know, me neither. - Zach Wheeler has 12 wins. He's going to go with Zach Wheeler. Dylan C's has 12 wins. I mean, you could put him in there. Here's what was brought up and I don't think it's the worst thing I've ever heard. How about relief pitchers winning the Cy Young this year in both leagues? Raisell Iglesias of the Braves. Just finished off a streak of 33 batters in a row. His ERA is 1.39, Scrabie. He's got a whip of 0.6. He's got 28 saves. He's probably the main reason why the Braves are still remotely hanging onto that last wild card. Iglesias, to me, could be a Cy Young candidate. In the American League, there's a lot stronger Cy Young candidate who's a reliever and that's Emmanuel Clausay of Cleveland. This guy in 61 innings this year has allowed four runs. That's it. - Did he blow a save against the Padres? - I don't remember honestly. Look it up, but his whip is a little higher than Iglesias, 0.67. Those two might be the best pitchers in their respective leagues this year. It'll be interesting to see relief pitchers have won Cy Young awards before. It's not impossible. Mark Davis, the Padres won one in 1989, left-handed reliever. It can happen. So it might be something to think about because I don't think any of the starting pitchers have really stood out to the point where you think, I got to give them the Cy Young award. Just something to think about. One other thing to think about. - He didn't, by the way, blow a save. - Clausay did not blow against mine. He came in late and they were already down, so. - Okay, Clausay has been, you know, pretty unhittable, right? - Everyone talking to Mandy Bell who covers the Guardians was saying he's been unreal this year. - Well, four hits, four runs the whole year?
