Willie Nelson, of course, native of Abbott, you know, home of the Abbott Panthers who have new head football coach, you know, with the son of Terry Crawford, the iconic head coach or Kyle, his son who has already won a state baseball championship, will try to pull off the double in football. You see what I did there? Just got us right on in the visiting with Greg Tepper, managing editor of daycams, Texas Football Magazine. Tepper, why don't you tell everybody where you plan to be on Thursday night? No. So I think folks who have followed my work and followed my career over the next last, you know, handful of years, understand that I'm a bit of a sicko and so allow me to tell you, Craig, that on Thursday I will be hopping in the old Dave Campbell's Texas football truck. I'll be picking up my buddy Matt Stepp and we are driving to Scenic Hamilton, Texas, where you're thinking, oh, you're going to go see the Hamilton Bulldogs play. No, no, no, no. We will be watching the Frost Polar Bears take on the winter's blizzards in what they're deeming the ice bowl there in Hamilton. And you'll know I love a good bit. This is about as good as it gets winters. I will tell you, winters in Frost, we do not have projected to play in their respective state championship games. And yet this does feel like must see football in Hamilton on opening night. No doubt about it. I'm jealous of it. I wish I could be there for that. By the way, the winter's most famous alumnus, the late, great Bill Little, of course, that many years of sports information, director, University of Texas, he was a winter's blizzard. I do not know that. Yep. He's a legend, a legend there and his dad was a photographer for the newspaper that they had there at the time and all that sort of stuff. And so that's quintessential Texas high school football mascot matchup made in heaven winter's blizzards and Frost Polar Bears. I might point out that right around the corner would be not long after that, the matchup between the eye task of Wampus Cats and the Frost Polar Bears, which is another fabulous matchup. I really appreciate what Frost is doing from a scheduling perspective. I think that they've really leaned into people want to play the polar bears. I think Phillip Gibson has really taken the right approach here of just saying, what if we just play all the great other mascots? That's just great work there and an early front runner for 2A coach of the year. Yeah. Yeah. And you think about it. Task also has to play the Italy gladiators and so, you know, it works out really. Get them on a circuit. Just all those teams, get them on a dip, like let's break them up, have a different league, have a, have like a super league of just mascots, you know, they can just all play one another. Yeah. Let's have the mascot league. Before we get into some other things, our resident Mojo Maniac texted in to ask and said, Hey, would you, would you ask TEP for a Permian preview? He said, I think we're playing in jeans these days. He said, by the way, he said, Mojo class of 86, I still have Johnny Bailey's footprints on my chest for folks who don't know what that was. The 1985 5A State Championship game, I was there for it and it was Houston Yates 37 and a Permian nothing and Johnny Bailey himself had a fabulous game that day at Texas Stadium off of that. Now, on the record, we're, we're both on the record as being Jeff Ellison fans. We, we, we like Coach Ellison. Yeah. I like Coach Ellison a lot. I think that the, I'll say the little Southwest conference is here. I don't know that there's a world beater last year. I mean, you had middle and legacy who made it to the regional semi-final last year, but I, I think that there, the pack had kind of condensed a little bit. Right now we have Permian 4th in that district. The biggest thing for me about Permian is that I don't think they're going to have the kind of depth that we thought they've had in the past couple of years. They got some repeat places, pizza replaced, they lose Justice Laura, who's so important. They do bring back their quarterback Jacob Garcia that I know that they're very bullish on. But, you know, I will say this about them. They opened the season in again, just an a classic high school football, just if you're a old school high school football fan, how about, oh, how about Plano at Odessa Permian? That is beautiful. That is, that is mother's milk of Texas high school football in a week. Well, that's great stuff. Good. I mean, great uniform match of everything's great about that. I think right now Permian is a playoff team. I think the upside is there, but I want to see if that defense and the depth can come along. Old guy brain kicks in here remembering that Plano beat Permian 6-3 in the state semifinals in 77 and followed it up with a free nothing whenever Mojo in 78 in the final four. That kind of, that's Plano versus Permian. That kind of stuff. Yeah. I'll say that I'm going to say that in the year 2024, I do think that there'll be a touchdown scored. Yeah. So that would, that would make it perhaps the highest scoring Plano Permian game in decades. Yeah. And, and we'll be the, and we'll probably the game will outscore both of those other two games combined. That's, that's pretty easy. That's sad there. Maybe my first quarter. Yeah. Greg Tapper, managing editor Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine with us. I want to, I'll step away from high school for a moment, then we'll come back to him. I want to go to college. How about your thoughts in reviewing SMU's close shave, the escape and from Reno and then, and then Tarleton, who kind of almost handed it to McNeese or to use your phrase, played with their food when they were up significantly in that contest and then they had to hold on, but got their first win as a full fledged FCS member there in Stephenville, the last Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. You know, we'll start with Tarleton. You know, the win is a win, they were taken on a McNeese team that did go winless last year. At the same time, they brought in an outstanding quarterback, you know, Tarleton tried to give it away late, but I think that, you know, they held on, they made some plays when they needed to, you know, and, and, and got, had a good crowd out there for their, for their national television debut on ESPN to, you know, I think of that, that's promising. The thing that hurts them would be the injury to their quarterback. They lost their quarterback in the middle of that game. That's going to be a question kind of going forward, but I do think that overall, you know, you put in the left hand column and you move on, you hope that you can clean some things up with your new quarterback for SMU. I think that is, I'll just, I'll just say that I was underwhelmed by how they played up front. I thought they should have played volleyball against Nevada a little bit better and they weren't able to kind of win at the point of attack tomorrow phrase, but the biggest thing is, I'm, I'm, I'm officially out on the two quarterback thing. They tried to run out both quarterbacks, both Dallas guys actually, Preston Stone and Kevin Henry Jennings and kind of alternate them and, and what it ended up being is that nobody was able to get into a rhythm and nobody was able to come up, you know, with, with any sort of consistency there. I think they were kind of hoping that one of these guys would grab it by the rain the night of them did. And so now I think, I think if you're red, Lashley, you just got to take one, you got to commit to one. And if it doesn't work, then have a short leash and that's fine. But this whole alternating series type thing, um, I do wonder if you'd kind of pumped in full truth serum, if you thought like, Oh, you know what, we're going to kind of roll out there and dominate, uh, Nevada, you know, team, you had coach, not very good last year, we think we're going to dominate them. And then when that game got hairy, uh, suddenly that plan doesn't seem so good, uh, to have two quarterbacks. So I think they got to get them clean, some things cleaned up a more upfront, but more importantly, I think they just got to take a single color and roll with it. Um, is it safe to say that the, the, for the colleges in the state of Texas, easily, uh, the most anticipated game for you this Saturday is Texas A&M Notre Dame, unless you take out part of your Arkansas against Melissa, but that's a high school game. So, uh, so, uh, or, or the, uh, the six man, uh, uh, you know, big, big, swary they always have on the opening weekend, but, uh, but, uh, with regard, with safe to safe from the college perspective of the schools and the state of Texas, that's the game you're kind of zeroing in on. Yeah, I don't think there's really any doubt. I mean, the college game is going to be there. That's one thing. It's also just a really interesting kind of first look at Mike Elko's, uh, Notre Dame Notre Dame team, or, uh, he did coach a Notre Dame one point, but, uh, A&M team, um, and, and just kind of see where they're at. You know, there are, we have a lot of questions about this A&M team specifically out wide. They got to have some receivers step up, specifically the running back spot, especially now that Ruben owns us out, um, and, and in the trenches, you know, on strangely, one of the questions we have is in, is in kind of like the, uh, you know, the, the, the front seven, you know, and that's one of the questions that, that we have, there's talent there and they bring in guy like Nick Scorton from, from Purdue, but I, I need to see exactly what it looks like taking on another name team that's really capable of coming in and winning a, you know, winning a big game. This is a real helmet game, right? You look at it. You see the Golden Domers and you see the A&M, uh, you get excited. The other thing about it is that overall, across the state of Texas, it's just kind of an underwhelming week one, uh, from a schedule perspective. There's no real big ones. I mean, there's an argument to be made that the second most compelling game in the state is Sam Houston and Rice, which, you know, is interesting. We'll find out a lot about both of them. And I think for both of them, if they want to, if they have dreams and ideas of getting to a bowl game, this is kind of game you got to put in the left hand column, uh, but, but overall we're kind of easing into college football season as far as the big name matchups are concerned. But, but A&M and Notre Dame is certainly that exception. Uh, you and I got a, a text today from Joey Maguire, the head coach at Texas. And he was kind of just giving you some grief about, uh, hoping that the, uh, that, uh, football Friday, uh, score app was going to be working, uh, properly and that sort of thing. Uh, but, uh, he opened up with the school, uh, two and a half hours down the road, Abilene, uh, Christian, all of that. But, um, it's safe to say not that Joey's in any kind of, uh, hot water or trouble or hot seat or anything like that, but it's important for them to get off to a good start in this new and in, and, uh, some would say improve, some would say certainly, uh, reborn Big 12 Conference. Yeah, go win that game, right? You know, go, go out there, win that game, make sure you, you go out there, you look good. Uh, and I would say get a lot of the younger, get a lot of the exciting players involved. Get Todd Brooks involved. This is the guy we think is the best running back, uh, at least to start the year in the state of Texas. Um, you know, a guy who is who's so good for them. Get like a husband involved. That's your five star wide receivers. Throw him the ball. You know, get, get, get an opportunity to get, get your fans excited about that. Uh, but yeah, I think for Texas Tech, it's a big year. I think it's a big year for, for going in the choir. Obviously he was gangbusters in his first year there in Lubbock and then kind of fell back to earth in the second season, you know, so pretty good, but, but, you know, overall not to the standard that he hopes to be. Um, I think this is the kind of year that you kind of, uh, we're going to see which one was the exception and which one was the rule, you know, it is, is six and six going to be more likely or is it going to be closer to eight and four, especially in a new look, a big 12? I think their schedule sets up very well for them. They don't play Kansas State. They don't play Utah. Uh, their schedule sets up relatively well, but, uh, yeah, get off on the good foot in this one and establish a couple of playmakers. Uh, put some tape out there that people are going to be sweating over. Okay. I have to tell you this, uh, because I was going to ask you, uh, which high school game in this state are you most eagerly anticipating this weekend? Now I preface this by telling you that our producer and Texan live veteran broadcaster Cameron Parker turned down, turned down Columbus Quero. He turned it down now he had, he had really good, uh, logistical reasons for it, but he turned that down. He's doing Flugerville and Leander instead, uh, but, uh, did, did he turn down the best matchup in the state of Texas in week number one, which by the way, he's going to be called by our, uh, broadcast voice for long run softball Andrew Haynes is going to be calling that game now. So did he turn down, did Cameron turn down the best game in the state? Well, I don't want to tell Cameron how to run his career, uh, but, you know, it's, it's the choices were made obviously. That's fine. You know, whatever's most important. You have one just to go home. It's fine. He turned down an opportunity to have the, you know, I think a certified heater right out of the gates. I mean, you're talking about, uh, a Quero team that I think is flying a little bit under the radar. Some pieces to replace, but they start the year number 12 in for a division two and especially in Quero into Whit County. They are difficult to beat and they're going to be in front of a green mob of people who are, have been hungry for govler football for about nine months now. Um, and now, you know, going up against Columbus, which is dripping within tree, a team that we think is a certified state championship contender with a TCU committed quarterback, a TCU commit, I believe at linebacker and John showable playmakers all over the place and oh, yeah, the day view, the alumni day view of Grayson Rigdon, the three times six man player of the year now going to be out there. So that is a game, especially on the road against a team that has a ton of speed and Quero that is going to be absolutely fascinating. Uh, I'm really excited about it. Uh, Cameron, obviously not that excited about it. That's okay. You know, everyone has different, uh, different things. It's not the excitement. It's the fact that we have a radio show until five p.m. on Fridays, the game puts it seven and quails what? Two and a half hours away, not counting, uh, Friday rush hour traffic. I wish I could be there, but fortunately, the field's a little bit closer. I'm just saying that Craig has taught me that speed limits are really suggestions. He told me that, you know, directly. So, uh, final thing, if, if not that game, what's the best game in the stage this weekend? Oh, Lee. Okay. It's a loaded week. It's there. There. I told you that there's 750 games this week. That is the most that we've ever had in a single week. It's the biggest weekend of high school football in American history. And it's simple, 750 games, um, across the state and it is a massive, massive slate. I think. Oh, man, um, you can go with a team or the game, like North Shore and in South Oakland. That's a big, heavy, heavy, hitting matchup, um, you could go in a game like Kilgore and Carthage, which I think is going to be gangbusters out there in East Texas. That game's going to be great. I'm really excited about Westlake and Prosper, but if you're asking me to pick one, I'm going to pick Belleville and Selena Friday night in Hewitt in Midway, because these are two teams that I think have an opportunity to elevate themselves to the upper crust. We know how well Selena is going to be. And here's looking for a matchup, right? Selena is going to be excellent up front, really, really good up front. And they've got two great running backs in Harrison Williams and Logan Gutierrez. They're going to run the dang ball as a great man once said, well, what do you do when you're running the ball at 300 pound defensive lineman, DJ Sanders, the A and M cut. Plus they've got D D Murray running the slot. See, I think this game is fabulous. I think there's actually like, it's just two like elite teams playing on a neutral site. Uh, I think this is like a real playoff field and this will be a real feather in the cap of whoever gets to win. So I'm going to go with Belleville and Selena. He's great temper managing enter deep Campbell's Texas football magazine. Uh, he and I will be on high school scoreboard live along with Aaron Hartigan on, uh, Friday night. Now you, uh, have a newer and different duties in the earlier part of the evening. Correct? Yes. Uh, Dave Campbell's Texas football tonight. It'll be basically high school football red zone, uh, from our friends and tech and live. The aforementioned tech and live, uh, we will be, uh, dipping into the biggest games across the state as the action is happening, including Columbus and Quero, uh, including Alito and Ben Gire. We've got a massive slate of games over me dropping into it'll be myself, Ashley Pickle and Ismail Johnson live for free everywhere on tech and live.com and on our YouTube page. Are you dropping in on our game? The, uh, love Joy. Uh, love a Cooper game. Uh, I don't think that that is, uh, within our rights. I think that, uh, I think that why might get a letter from legal if I were to do that, but you know, you'll, you'll have a pretty darn good call. Yeah. You can, Todd Dodge. Yeah. They were trying to talk this. By the way, this is just, this is a small thing and certainly please watch Texas football tonight. My bosses want me to tell you that. But I will say that if you are going to watch the baller game, I think love at Cooper's got a real shot. I don't know. I know you've been digging into the game, but I think this Cooper team is legit and the more, the more I look into it, the more I think this team is dangerous. Front seven of Cooper versus offensive front of love. Joy. I think it comes down to that. Yeah. Great matchup too. Yep. Really is. Hey. I appreciate it. I'll see you on Friday. All right. All right. That's a Greg Tapper, managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas football magazine. More coming up when we continue on sports radio AM 13 on the zone in the eye already.
