The games that do not count are over and yes, now everything matters. We are through the morass of the pretend season. The regular season is at hand. And that is why we have called in the big guns and the lumber this morning on a very special live edition of six rings and football things brought to you by W E I Odyssey and 2,400 sports. You got the usual knuckleheads from six rings, your old pals, Nick Fitzy, Stevens and Andy Jumbo Hart. But joining us this morning, fresh off of looking like a million bucks on the national broadcasting company Sunday night football presentation of the Patriots and the commanders, the one and the only three times Super Bowl champion and NBC sports analyst, Devin McCordy here to help us analyze and figure out exactly what we just saw in the preseason and what's going on with your Patriots. Deb, thanks for making a little time for us this morning. Big guy. How you doing? No problem, fellas. How you guys doing this morning? So it was a rough game last night. Yeah, it was. Yeah. Well, we were on the air till, I know you were on the air till after 11 o'clock and we were on the radio till 1 a.m. last night, chopping up last night and trying to make sense of just what we saw last night and what we've seen all preseason long and exactly which direction this team is headed. So let me start with a quick one of our favorite little exercises here, Deb. If you could pick one word to describe the Patriots pre-season on the whole, just one adjective, what do you think it would be? It would definitely be inconsistent, I think that's the one go to the games and training camp. What you watch, what you hear from people, it just, you would like for it to just slowly be extended and get ready for the season and it just seems like it was a lot of up and down. All right. So the question of the summer, the question since April has been Drake May. Actually Gerard maya was just on our station W E I and he said, this is a true competition and then he said, and to this point, Drake may has outperformed Jacobi Bursett as a former defensive player who's lived through some of these quarterback debates, I guess, in recent years with the Mac and Zappy era, who should be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots when they head to Cincinnati for the opener? I still think it should be Jacobi Bursett, I think what you saw from Drake May is what you want to see a young guy come in and just consistently get better and I would say the good thing for him and for Patriots fans is he's gotten better despite some of the things that were going on around him in these games. I think the biggest thing is turn on the joint practice against Philadelphia. We even talked to him in a production meeting and he talked about how comfortably was one on one's seven or seven and then the team drill when you actually saw the offensive line, the offense go against a starting defense, it was a different story, it was really rough and I just, I would be hesitant to put him out there and everything's going to be on him to make the right checks and I know David Andrews being out there will be huge when it comes to those things but when your offensive line or you're not as good in other places, it's up to the quarterback to make it right and for 20 years in New England we saw a guy who could make things right no matter what was around him, it was incredible to see but that's not the norm and that's what I worry about if you put Drake May out there too early compared it to Mac last night or air and you know somebody wrote to me, well Mac had a great stunt and I'm not talking about that, he did but in '21 we had a lot of pieces around him that made sense, the offensive line was good, we added some weapons, Kendrick Boor and Hunter Henry but 2022, the whole line wasn't as good, different things happened, what was around him wasn't as good and you saw it drop off a lot and I think now you see him back in Jackson again back to that, you don't want Drake May to go through that same thing so I think that's what they need to be a little weary of. Yeah you know David's interesting because we were even talking about this last night on our post-game show, there's, I feel like there are two comps right now that are dragging fans, media and everyone that's interested in the Patriots, it's like one way and the other, one is what happened with Mac Jones, starting out so great with you guys in 2021, you go into the buy and I feel like a separate documentary can be made about what happened after you guys went into the buy and then lost to India and had some struggles heading into that Buffalo game and then of course the Patricia experiment last year etc and it falters and so people are fearful of throw and Drake May to the wolves if you will too quickly but by the same stroke last year, CJ Stroud comes in, he's got a couple of established veterans in Houston, Case Keenum, Davis Mills and he comes in smokes, doesn't even look that great in the preseason but Ryan's gives him the job, he comes out and was an absolute monster last season so I feel like, I feel like you almost have to just like trust your gut that this kid is going to be good enough despite only two years of college football and not worry that he's going to be another Mac Jones because doesn't he seem like a different cat emotionally and psychologically altogether? Yeah and I think one of the key things that what Houston was, they went and got Shaq Mason, they already had Jeremy Tunsell, like they pieced together an offensive line that could at least keep CJ Stroud upright to a sense like, you got a solder for his driveway, they run a play action pass, city so comes around, doesn't get enough depth or whatever it is, Jacobi gets killed off the edge and I just think like, we're not watching like, when we watch these preseason games, we're not watching the type of defense that I would expect a rookie to see in a regular season, Lou Armarano coming up, you're going to see different guys in the line of scrimmage, secondary pressures like, you're going to just see a lot and that's my worry I think, I think they tried to do some things but I think if you look at the NFL now, it's not too often that we see good offense alignment available in free agency, you just, you don't see it, like when we let Joe Tony go a couple of years ago, like, you don't really see massive deals like that happen where one guy goes to another team, so it really feels like they have to start to get the microwave in new situations where whether you draft a guy early, you draft a guy late, you have to develop them into a good player but you, I just worried about putting them in there, if they lose David Andrews to any type of two series, you know, three plays, you got to sit there and be like, I texted him last night, I was like, hey, I knew you were a good player, I didn't know that they could operate without you, you know? Yeah, this offensive line thing is, I don't even know how to describe it, I've not seen something this bad, I mean, we're at the point where, see, it's falling apart literally behind, it's literally trying to bring up the old line and pictures are falling off walls, that's how bad it is, they can't get the, when David Andrews is out there, they've struggled with just the shotgun snaps, the QB center exchange, as a guy who's been in locker rooms and every year everything changes, so you know, the running backs are good this year, then they're not as good like, what is it like on a team where I know everybody wants to be good teammates and not point fingers and, you know, focus on a quote unquote fatal flaw, but this old line looks like it could be a fatal flaw to this football team, like how, how do you deal with that as a player internally at other positions? Well, I think defensively, you got to keep going and hard and practice every day. I think one of the things that hopefully they get is they can solidify five guys that can be on the field and just take a ton of reps together, I think that's one of the biggest issues that they've had, you know, as you talk to the offensive line, I was like, if we get in a little bit of a groove, the area low had been playing decently well for them, and he gets hurt, you know, and they've been up and down just for some injuries and guys being in and out, and I think you already knew that this office of law and struggle last year, you're going to have some new pieces in there trying to figure out some things, it's big might going to be a guard, a tackle, I think if you could have five guys that are six guys, depending on where might plays, guard or tackle, now you will start to build a rhythm, but it's really hard for any team to go through training camp and not have the same guys consistently in there from an office of my standpoint, but I think from a team standpoint, you just got to keep at it, it sounds ridiculous, I talked to my brother the year he was in Cleveland, they went all with 16, and he was like, it wasn't sanity, like we woke up every week, every day came in every week and was like, just what we're going to do, game plans in, and we're going to go win, he said, and for 16 weeks we lost, and we still believe that we would play a 17th game that year, he said we still felt like what we were going to do was going to bring us a win, I think that's what football is, is to not be over and over, and that you just hope, I think this team is very similar to Arizona, more than Houston where it's like, all right, you don't have all the pieces you want, you're starting to try to establish, you got a Drake Bay, and you have these different people, how can this team be, one way of September, maybe they don't win a lot of games, but by the end of December, you look and you say, well like, a lot of guys got better, the culture's being built, maybe now the future can start to kind of go and be assembled, and you know, we'll see what Arizona looks like this year, but I thought that was a good comparison, they just kept putting pieces in place that maybe didn't work for the last year, but they were hoping down a lot, it was going to pay off. Yeah, a couple quick thoughts to what you said to have, number one, you're so spot on about the Houston thing, last year, even on our radio show in this podcast, we were hammering home the point that Houston surrounded, they did exactly what you're supposed to do with a rookie quarterback, kind of like the way that the Bears have given Caleb Williams, all these weapons, a deep guy, a good new running back, maybe the best hands in the NFL and Keenan Allen, last year they decided Houston was going to just go fundamentally in the trenches, like you said, with Mason and tonsil and everybody, they traded for a tackle from Arizona last preseason, so they short up the line, that makes sense. Last time you guys won the Super Bowl, what was the one stat that rung truest that kind of doesn't get discussed often enough, is that everybody across the entire line didn't miss a single game, you guys had the same offensive line as an 11 and 5 team with an epic postseason run, and that kind of continuity is just so important. And last night, we were, you know, saying in jest, a somebody should drive up to Dante Scarneki his house and like dead him or wallpole wherever he lives, with one of those giant grand prize bank checks from like publishers clearing house and just be like, you fill in the amount Dante, that's fine. You just let us know how much it's going to cost, you know, how many years have we talked about like, how can we get Dante Scarneki back when he first retired, it was like, how do we get him back, then he retires again, it's like, how do we get him back, I mean, this is a kudos to him, guys, absolute legend. I've never seen a guy who can get more out of a group of players and players individually, like Scarneki, it was, and he didn't do it in a nice way and every guy loved him. So that that was always unique to me. I'm glad you say that because I think he is one of the most miraculous people that's ever walked the planet because I've never heard a meaner coach, he could absolutely undressed and shred linemen, and they would like lay down and let him walk on their backs. Like they, he's one of the miracle motivators and leaders that I don't think people understand, I actually traveled with him a couple years ago to a pro day at Vanderbilt, and he was talking to like three lineman pre draft. And he's this, he's not big, like he's just kind of walks in with his shorts on hands in his pocket. And he starts talking and these guys start sweating and stammering and babbling and like he is the most intimidating, but Bill was intimidating too. But I'm not sure Bill always had the same amount of pure love that Dante had. So I'm glad you bring that up. And, and that's where we are with this whole coaching staff, right? They're trying to figure out Scott Peters, he's an experienced coach, but now we have to build those bonds and Gerard Mayo is learning on the fly here. How much do you think the coaching right now is going through their own rookie struggles like learning on the fly, making mistakes? Oh, probably shouldn't have said that, Gerard Mayo, burn some cash, put that one away, don't ever say that again. Like how much are the coaches learning like we're going to see young players learn? I think at the same exact rate, because it's not only some new coaches in there when you talk about your male, but it's also the first time that they've all come together. So what happens like last night, the adversity hits where you have a legal formation, was it three or four times in the game? What's the reaction? And I know, you know, talking to the guys like Gerard Mayo before the production meeting, he said, going into their first preseason games, he preached toys on the headset. He's like, we don't want the headset. Everyone's going nuts, cursing guys out. And he said, this is when we lose focus on we're writing a game and then we can't tell the guys to settle down one planet a time where we're going nuts. So I think it's a lot of it. I think these coaches are now ingrained into a system and to a culture and to a team that you haven't really had anything to do with. So as an offensive line coach, you come in, these are all new faces. It's not like you're coming in and you're like, Hey, I know I got like my five guys that have been here. We're going to I'm going to get to know them. No, it's like, all right, I know David Manchester has been here. I know Michael Wayne, who's going to be here. He's now turning the page into a young guy now to a veteran. But like, those are the building blocks. Everybody else kind of was new last year to the Patriots. So everything they learned last year is kind of going. So now they're brand new with no kind of foundation. And then the other two guys, you know, their foundation is from a previous regime. So you're just trying to build, and I would say not just offensive, the whole offense, like you're trying to now start all over. And it's guys who all have a totally different backgrounds, other teams and NFL colleges. It's all thrown in there. We talked to Joe Milton and Drake May, they were like the biggest adjustment was getting a play call on your helmet and then going and like they were so used to look at the sideline. There's 20 signs up. There's like six guys over there, you know, doing a bunch of signals. So you just have so many new things that you're trying to mix together. Yeah. And you know, you speak to culture and establishing the method in manner in which Gerard Mayo wants to run things. And it's going to be a shame if it all gets blown up per se. If the offensive line is so bad that the offense can't actually ever get in gear, and then they would as would be the case a lot of times subsequently leading up to your retirement. And even last year, lean on the defense too much. And then that puts pressure on the defense to hold ground. And then you end up having hot mic issues where to real peppers, you know, runs over to Saquon Barkley afterwards and says you lucky we asked. And you know, that's funny at all. It's still funny, by the way. I almost printed those shirts. Are you an XL? So, you know, like that's that's funny and all we make just but like at the same time, those were such tough watches last year. Because the offensive line was bad and Mac was in his head and Bill was frustrated and Bill O'Brien was and Adrian Klam wasn't even there half the year like that's why the two biggest priorities it seems to me from afar a make sure you develop the quarterback and don't get him hurt or frustrated and mangled and be just settled down so long enough so you can let people know what kind of team you're going to be going forward like probably running probably good defense. So that next time I you or Ridley or someone else doesn't look at it and go now I'm gonna go make money somewhere else. like they've got killed on like you just said really and i you and the more i've talked to people it was simple because guys were just like hey i'm good like i know they have the most money on the table because i think you know it's coming in a new England area the crafts get killed they're not offered enough money i think in both those situations i think they were one like this was the top deal on the market and both guys were like no like we we don't want to go there and there's been teams and i think the positive is in new winglin you have no idea what that feels like over the last 27 years you talked to long time fans they know all about it you talked to people who grow one of our producers as a long time to winglin fan and he's talking to me last night about all the different years where like he said men didn't want to get married because you were too used to heartbreak because you followed the patrons and i think what you look at other teams where you started to develop that a lot i don't want to go there like the last place i want to go is to that place when i first got in the league jacksonville was kind of like that like you didn't want to go to jacksonville because they talked about the games are going to be black down and all that stuff look at jacksonville now i mean look at buffalo what was it like 14 straight years we had what's a buffalo and one i was like nobody wants to go there they'll never get guys in free agency you just have to slowly build and i think you said the key is in this league you have to have a guy that's a good football player at quarterback but also that guys will believe in and i think drake may over these last two weeks when you look you're like i think i got if i'm a young guy i wouldn't want to go play with him i think it was really important because when you looked around the rest of the league you're like oh wow jadon dang looks incredible came up with Williams looks incredible bow nix looks really good my appendix jr is not going to play but you know the snaps he got that looked pretty good and jj macarthy very limited but you were like every doubt they had he kind of showed it it wasn't true and i think it was so cool last night seeing drake may because it was like hey he didn't have no one thought of footwork that's going to be his struggle and you're watching him he calls up in the pocket he delivers a throw so every coach was saying abp he said the thing they love about drake may is he give process and get better and i will say over the last few weeks you've seen that now it's just about hey i hate to say it but it's a low chance this team is going to be playing for a super position so yes you want to win games you want to be competitive but you also want to keep in mind we're getting better we're getting better there's a plan in place and i think they have to try their hardest to stick to that and not fall into because if this doesn't start off well everyone's going to be chan every game we you want me we want me and you have to really know is he ready to go out there is this the best thing for our organization if it is then you go run with it and go but you have to know once you do that you really can't you can't come back from that and change it up dev i want to get your perspective so we've beat up on the offense for a long time now the line stangs who's the quarterback okay so let's go to the defensive side of the ball where there are still i think some high expectations despite questions about christian barmore and you trade away judon and one guy i want to get your perspective on is a guy i'm a little um hesitant to put in canton i guess as uh bill parcells would say christian gonzalez super talented like he appears to have the total package but the reality is he played three and a half games last year in the nfl and the harsh reality is week one he's going to see jamar chase and then he's going to see debo and then he's going to see waddle and hill and like that's coming at him and you lived that world you were an all pro rookie cornerback who i think i don't want to speak for you like learned that well that came a little easier than it maybe should have and then the second year there were some lumps so what is this year going to be like for christian gonzalez great talent but massive challenges i mean we got to be honest it makes this an extension of his rookie year and i think from me being around him the limited time i'm around i was around him i think he's going to be pretty good because he's not sitting back and sitting there being like hey i'm good i got it all figured out he works his butt off my color greeno is always talking about the things he's doing to get better but i think they're being realistic if you can't i think guys have now fans and everybody around the organization has turned and be like we're about to watch step on gilmore when we turn on the film when we go to one of one's at practice it's going to be gilmore of 2.0 and it's just like hey now gilmore came into wingman in like year six or seven i think or five whatever it was and then the first year of everybody remembers it was like they signed his god it is crazy contract he's the highest pay god defense it's ridiculous get him out of here in 2018 i remember we played green bay he's one of old devons a parper like it's nothing 2019 defense of playerity here but that doesn't all just happen you mentioned me like coming in as a rookie i didn't know what i didn't know we're doing all these things on defense i'm like man i'm like i've never done this amount of stuff on defense the second year we have to lock out we change our defense totally i'm like oh all right just go stand up there play press man to man okay i can do that oh 140 yards and a touchdown to the brand emotional this and jackson next week another 150 yards and a touchdown and it was just like whoa like this is all coming at me fast and i think for me we were all still learning i didn't have like some bettering gods i had leave body and it was there and he got released and then that second year brandon mary was brand and mary brother was gone chames sanders those were my pets i was now the vetting year two and i think the thing that's going to really be good for christianist's is jonathan jones is still there cal duggers there you mentioned my god pet well you there's no bad days with pet he's always going to be energetic again guys know so i think this is also be fine i just think the like all the eyes outside expect like this guy to like give up one pass of practice in training camp walk away with four pb use i think you just want to go out there and see a competitor thank great work for him joint practice you go up there and you're going against h.a. brown you're going to find three or four five other guys in this league that are going to be like h.a. brown and the hard thing for him is you're going to see those guys you're going to have tomorrow chase you're going to have t-higgas week one so i think it was good preparation for him and i think overall that corner group that's another group that you kind of want to see out there over and over again like you want to see johnathan jones outside on the other side you want to see market jones in the slot there's going to be market shows mark a wilson has showed up and played pretty well but you want to start to notice the time of the season where all the guys that are going to be out there let them go play ball like let's see them out there let's see what they're starting defensive line it's going to be how's it going to look without ball bar how's it going to look without juke ball let's see those guys out there over and over again and they'll start to build it in practice and we didn't really see in the preseason but i think their health on defense is going to be a big part especially the secondary at quill yeah that's why i keep trying to tell fans dev like whatever your expectations are for the team this year like if it's a nest thermostat in your house just walk up to the dial of expectations rip it off and then reinstall it next year don't have any any idea of what you think this team is or can or should be this year just let him play establish the culture try to stay healthy and we'll figure it all out and you kind of answered one of my questions about who you think the leaders will be the guys that are going to try to hold this team up and drag them out of the sand and the mud together this year it'll be the andros it'll be the doggers and my guy too jabriel peppers who i always like to say wakes up every morning and then pours a bowl of violence and has it for breakfast and that's why i think he's my my favorite player on the team you're gonna need that kind of tough to help establish a new tone with the team uh you've been incredibly generous with your time this morning man we really appreciate it i'll just get you out in this last quick one who in the preseason not named drake may would you say impressed you enough that you're going to be looking to him or these couple of guys as potential future patriots who are going to sell jerseys in the pro shop and light up the smiles on the fans in the stands i think obviously pulk i think i think i i personally think they need to put the young receivers out there and let it do what it does like let them let you bomb baker he's a little behind it seems like a figure and everything out let him get as many reps as possible let pulk get as many reps as possible i think both those guys have shown some explosion i think the the office will center around on the passing game and it'll center around pop with us i think he's the one guy who's just a little different than everybody else i know he's small when you watch him he watched like tech del and houston they just have a certain level of quickness and speed that's like all right those guys are elusive obviously i think the bell horse on office will be remontory stevenson i thought he's looked really good in this scheme whatever we say about the office alone and i know the hardest thing about the games are again i'm not bashing any teams here but like they play washington and carolina's backups whatever we think washington and carolina will be with their starters they played against their backups so they were able to run the ball a little bit against philly we're remontory but i think he'll be somebody that can count on we already talked about nazales i think african-age innings and keon white and jos gucci i think those three guys combined will pick up someone to slack for not having judon and i think everyone i think it's all right because you see judon is your best defensive player and you're like you've got rid of your best but the truth of the matter is like put judon in at his play at his position play him 98 percent of his steps maybe like you win one extra game because he's on the field maybe like it's just and i don't think it's going to matter that much uh i'm looking forward to that and i i think my two favorite guys is what you just missing fitsy it's going to be dugger and peppers i think they're going to make on defense they're going to make the most wow plays where you're like oh my god how do it's got like jubreel peppers and joint practices like i don't even know it's hard to set up a situation where you just run through gosh chest and join practice because it's a controlled tempo like guys are coming down to blocking he's not he's not breaking front just running through gosh so i think him and dugger they're going to they're going to need them to be out in front leading doing those things and then i think the ultimate leader on the team will be joanna bitley i think he'll be he's a guy that wasn't out there in the preseason uh delo some injuries but i think he's the guy offensive to a defense i think he's like that number one leader i think it's like a part of his dna of how he is david answers is going to lead by example all day long i think then we will be the guy he's the guy that has a mix of got in there for that last super bowl that's a rookie he's seen certain things he has no problem stepping up speak it i think they're going to need him especially what adversity hits him i don't know when it'll hit him i think week one you know going to get sets of daddy and team that i think everyone's proud and a little too early they've had some problems staying healthy they struggled last year boram got healthy a little bit then he got right back here so i think new england has a chance that you know again i don't think this team is going to be great i think they have a chance week one to go in there against a good football team on paper and maybe show hey we can be competitive maybe they don't win but maybe they go on show hey we're going to be a pretty good football team but i know the guys on defense i heard gotcha i'll talk about it we're going to surprise some people i think they have a little bit of an edge of hey buddy devil mccordie was in this locker he's out there saying we're not going to be pretty good like i know if i was a player i'll be leaning on that we did that at times where whether it was Rodney or Teddy or all those guys that used to play and they were doing their job and when they were safe stuff we thought hey those guys don't think like they don't want us to catch them let's go so i think they should use all of that stuff you know i'm anxious to see how they play maybe they don't win but how they go out there to feed well i've been doing my part because i've said that there's a chance they lose all 17 games so if they can't get motivated by me saying that i mean what else is going to motivate them all so you are is that's not good culture building so if we say build a culture lose it all 17 my brother said we did it in cleaverly but he said i don't care what you say you're doing a draft picks and we're going to be good someday he was like cleaver will continue to struggle because losing to win just doesn't work it just doesn't work yeah listen i'm not meeting up with you guys in january and doing a cleaverly and browns fans reverse walk around the stadium when the patriots go all in 17 f that noise no i'm not doing it i want like that i want the hardest fight and toughest mf and five and 12 team in the league that every team knows every week like they're tough out and they're a decent watch okay i did detroit build that same way yep look at
