and hello again friends, welcome to another edition of Southern Fairways Sports Radio Show presented by our friends at McConnell Automotive, the number one GMC dealer in the state of Alabama. Hey, they're located just east of I-65 on Dolphin Street in Mobile, or you can check them out online at mcconnellautomotive.com. We're broadcasting live from our Shrickshawn studios today, right here in Lower Alabama, as I am your host Randy Bergen, a long PGA teaching professional, Bobby Hall will be here in just a few moments. As always, Matt, Bobby just running just a little bit like that, as usual, but that's all he's on Bobby time, it's all right. Well, that's right, that's right, there's no doubt. So you are one of the proprietors of Boudreau's Cajun Grill, you're sitting in, that's just right there on the beautiful Mobile Delta, you know him as the voice, Mr. Matt Brant. May we say congratulations on becoming a grandpa for the first time, just a week ago. Just a week ago, seven, eight, eight days now, I guess, eight days old is actually nine days, nine days old is Tyler Brooks, the first grandchild in this side of the brand clan, so we're, we're really excited about it. I know you are, I know, I know, it's, it's strange being as young as I am in a grandchild, but it worked out. I want to make sure I put that in there, as young as I am. Right, okay, okay, if you say so. I know your wife Nikki, the lovely Nikki, is, is just so exciting. She's over the moon, she's, she's going crazy. She has, she's now turned her phone, whatever screen she looks at now is a picture of the baby. She told me the day after she's on the way home, he's in there in Louisiana, so we were coming back on Friday after he was born. And she said, well, now, I'm sorry, hun, but I love my kids and I love you, but all of you went down a notch on my, on my scale. Hey, listen, I can, and, and Barry, I know you, you can relate with it. I said the same thing to my son. I said, I never thought when you were born that I could love anything or anyone as much as I did you. Well, today, son, when, when my grandson was born, I said, he took, he's number one now. That's it. But no, but congratulations. We'll talk more about that later. Doug Holton, not with us today. He's in Auburn, getting set for the, the game this evening, Alabama, A&M and Auburn Hill, share that with us next week. So we bring in the retired college and high school coach, former Southern Miss and Washington Red Skins receiver. He's known as the big dog. We call him G. Please welcome coach Barry Gibson. Gee, what is happening? My man is great. We love this time of the season. Oh, yeah. This is it. This is what I wait for. Randy is the fall and college football cranking up and high school football going on. This is my time of year. I'm glad to be here. I'm a grandfather too. Got five grandkids. So I know what y'all talking about. And, but now this is my favorite time of the year and really happy to be here. You know, look, we have a lot to get into. Of course, this is really the first full week of college football. We're going to talk a lot. We'll get you set up on the games that'll be happening today, specifically the, the SEC. We're going to be doing that throughout the show, but I will tell you at the bottom of the hour, excited to have former player and head football coach, former head football coach for the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. Coach Jeff Bower is going to be on with us and, and Barry, I know that you and Jeff have a huge relationship in the fact that you were the receiver and he was a QB. So four years. He was, he was our quarterback at Southern Miss and broke all kinds of records at Southern Miss that still stands today, even though we had quarterbacks behind him, like Reggie Kuyer and Brett Farr, Jeff Bower still has some, I think passing percentage record is still number one. Jeff was a great quarterback, dear friend of mine. We were teammates. Then he went on to be the head coach at Southern Miss and is now retired as the meanest head coach at Southern Miss. You know, and I think that's one of the questions I'm going to have for him is, is it's not often that you are able to not only be a player at a wonderful school like Southern Miss or whatever school it is, but you have the opportunity to come back and be the head football coach. I mean, that doesn't happen to a lot of players. Yeah, handful. And he did a phenomenal job as a coach. Well, still respected as one of the best college head coaches around, particularly at Southern Miss. He's revered pretty much and we're all having a big reunion coming up here in about a week. We'll get to see a lot of our old teammates from Southern Miss. And of course, Jeff will be there and looking forward to that as well. Well, that should be a lot of fun. That's pretty crazy for, especially in today's world with coaches revolving doors and then trying to stay somewhere and have success for such a long period of time. That's that's pretty powerful and got to be a dream come true for him. So it'd be great to hear from. Yeah, yeah, we'll talk with Jeff Bower at the bottom of the hour. Look, there's a little golf going on right now. PGA Tour Championship round three with only 30 players. That wraps up tomorrow from East Lake in Atlanta. Who wins you ask? Can you say Scotty Schiffler? It's looking pretty good there, buddy. You know, that's and I know, I know you guys love golf and all that. But do you like the fact of here you have a guy like Scottie Schiffler, who's won already six times I think this year. You give him a 10 stroke head lead on the 30th guy. Well, you think about that? He had that 10 stroke lead the last two years coming into this and did not win the FedEx Cup. So you got to wonder now, you know, he's he's been on record saying how, you know, flawed, he thinks this thinks this whole thing is, how can you win all these tournaments, get like his points and then, you know, come in with a two stroke lead over your second person, even though you might have him beat by 3000 points for the season. Right. You know, but I'll tell you, I think this year he's got a little chip on his shoulder. He's tired of sitting back and not winning that FedEx Cup. He's going to go after it. He's doing pretty well right now. I just think there's a there's a I mean, you need to reward him for for what he's done and earning all the points. You got it. There's got to be a reward in there. But I don't know. I'm just not sure about the way the stroke deal works out. You're right. I mean, right now, if you look at it, Scottie Schiffler's, he's in first place at minus 21. Call him or a cow who played outstanding 66 yesterday, shoots a 63. He's at 17 under Zander Shoffley at 16 under and then you go all the way down T four is Sahith Tagala and Wyndham Clark, those guys at 12 under. So I don't know. Also, let me mention Adam Scott, who I think has been playing great and there's just tops. I mean, he is just he is the awesome Aussie and he's at 12 under as well. But you know, these other guys are pretty much, I think, out of their pocket. I'm going to say this. Now, I think Scottie Schiffler's definitely got the whole shot to win this thing. But more cow coming out yesterday, shooting minus eight. Shoffley shooting minus seven. Scottie shooting minus five obviously had the best round on day one at minus six. But I tell you, you get more cow on Shoffley coming back out and doing minus eight minus seven again. They might be right up there come Sunday. Let's make it could be interesting. It could be. It could be. It could be. We'll talk more about that maybe throughout the show as well. But let me turn back and we got a few minutes left in this segment. Barry, when you play in ball like you did and not only in high school college and from the professional ranks, how do you like watching some of these teams? The first game of the season seems to be a little cake waltz. I mean, you look at Oklahoma last night, no problem with Temple 51-3, the final of that. I think a couple of the big games that you'll see. Now, I think the closest game was with your buddy, Mac Brown, last night. Yeah. They played Thursday night, wanted on the last second year field ago, one 19th, 1917. Over Minnesota. Over Minnesota. Great game. Randy, but getting to your point, I have never been a fan or a favorite of these cupcake opening games. Yeah, I really haven't. I just now tonight is just the opposite. We're going to see Texas A&M and Notre Dame. That's what college football is to me. Come out of the gates, play somebody really good, and let's see what you're what you're made of. You'll see Georgia and Clemson coming up at 11 o'clock on ABC. I think number one takes on number 14. We know that Davo Sweeney with Clemson, where have they been for the last couple of years? The ranked 14th. Right. So this should be an interesting game. They're playing that in Atlanta. And I know these games have been scheduled years back, sometimes eight, nine, 10 years ago. They're scheduled way in advance. And the coaches don't have a lot to do with it. But it's the ADs, you know, they have a lot of say in these scheduling. And I just wish, you know, they'd come out of the gates and play somebody really good. And if you wanted to play a cupcake down the road, you know, when you get some injuries, okay. But all these opening games, you know, with these little bitty schools I've never been a fan of. But, you know, whenever you were coaching, you do see it in some, in some high school, I mean, they'll come out with cupcake games. I can tell you whenever we were doing play by play in and broadcasting, uh, Bayside football. One of the things I loved about Coach Lazzamie is the fact that he said, Hey, we're going to go play a team that's better than us. Maybe a class up from us. And let's see what we're made of. And the schools, I was the head coach. We were usually the cupcake. Wow. Wow. There it is. There it is. Uh, but no, it's, uh, it's fun. We've been waiting for this. And, uh, and, and I, and I really am excited to see what's going to happen. You know, Alabama plays Western Kentucky this evening. And we'll mention Auburn taking on Alabama A&M. Yeah. And, and, and, and blow it. Blow up the scoreboard. Do you, do you see a lot from your players at that point? Or are you just trying to get more players in to get some experience? I mean, because at some point, whenever you saw a school, what school did I see was just crazy? Like 70, 70. Yeah. Yeah. That's awful. What are you getting out of that? Nothing. Yeah. I was Arkansas over Arkansas pine bluff. So exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Some of these games are, you know, you wonder is it, is it more of a scrimmage for some of these bigger schools that are going to these, to your words, cupcake games? And, you know, maybe it is. Maybe they get some, you know, excitement worked out that, you know, the first game of the season, they're all amped up, better to be amped up. And maybe, maybe make some mistakes early with a team like this. But, yeah, as a fan, you got to be, you got to like the games like this, you got Georgia and Clemson, you got LSU and USC on Sunday. Those are the games that are really going to get you fired up. So fun. Yeah. Yep. I'm, I'm excited about it. We're going to break down some of these games coming up in our next segment here. We'll start with that Georgia Clemson game. And we'll talk about that for sure. We're glad that you're here with us and joining us right here on Southern Fairway Sports Radio. Don't go anywhere more when we come by. Hey, get her done. You know, this is, this is Larry the capable guy. And you know who you're listening to? That's right. Randy Berget on Southern Fairways Radio Show. And if you're not listening to him, you're a communist. These boys are good. Oh my goodness. Welcome back to Southern Fairways. Randy Berget, Matt Brant, Barry Gibson, Coach Barry Gibson. And there he is, the legendary PGA teaching professional. He is the director of golf at Quirky Golf Club in Fair Hope, Alabama, our good friend. Sweet swinging, Bobby. How are you doing, my man? I'm a legend in my own mind. Hey, good to be here. And we are so excited about Southern Miss Barry Gibson being here. Wide receiver there at Southern Miss with Jeff Bauer. Jeff Bauer, be on it, what, 10.30? And next segment. Yep. Next segment. Well, Jeff is just a fantastic guy. So I hope you'll be listening. He just has so much insight into football. He did so much for Southern Miss. And I know Barry and Jeff are good friends, but be listening. What a, what a great man and great family man. And we miss Jeff at Southern Miss, but he's still around. He's still helping Coach Hall out and very proud to have him on our program. You know, Friday night, and Barry, you mentioned it, we'll talk with Jeff about it coming up at the bottom of the hour, but you got a, you got a reunion of Southern Miss players, your team back in the, what was it, the early 40s? 70s, 40s. Yeah, so there you go. There he goes. But no, I mean, and Matt, you may feel like this right now, I kind of feel like it. Bobby's got his golden eagle outfit on. Barry's got his golden eagle outfit on him. I'm feeling like underdressed. Yeah, I am too. I felt bad not being able to wear my, my Bama, you know, gear get up. I'm, I'm on, I'm on Boudreau's team today. Yes, you are. Yes, you are. You got to get with the program. When you get, when you get a Bama's head football coach on, like we've got ours on, you can, yeah, you can wear your stuff. Well, to Randy's point, we haven't, we haven't known him for 80 years. So we have some time to catch up. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. Well, hey, look, I want to get into some football, but before we do, I'd be remiss if I did not mention one of our good friends, Robert Nelson, played in the U.S. senior amateur and, and Bobby just got to be so impressed and thrilled for him out of the thousands of guys that try to qualify for what he comes in. And the semifinals that he loses by one to, to Lewis Brown, who goes on to win. So yeah, I mean, if you're going to lose, lose the guys going to win, right? Yeah. But, uh, yeah, congratulations to Robert. Well, Robert's been a great friend of everybody in, uh, in Mobile in Baldwin County. He's such a good player and, uh, yeah, very happy to see that. And I did. I went and looked at his scorecards and, uh, over his matches, of course he, uh, he's probably not real happy with the first two rounds. He shot in middle play, which were a little bit high score, but he made, makes it into 64. And then he's like 51, 52 on the list and makes it to the semifinals, which is fantastic. And he did go on to lose to the gentleman who ended up winning from Georgia. Georgia has some hell of a players over there, but, uh, Robert, we're very proud of you and very proud that you represented Mobile, Baldwin County, in South Alabama, the way you did. That was fantastic to see him do that as a, as a senior player, but he's always been a great ball instructor, a friend of everybody and, uh, congratulations. We were playing it. We were playing in the woman's, uh, over at, um, over in Mississippi this year. And Robert's team was in front of us. So we got to watch him and it's like, do you miss? Do you ever miss? I mean, and he never does. He's like a Joe Durant. He just hits every fairway, hits every green, just methodically goes about his business. That's right. So we're happy for Robert. Thank you for representing, uh, South Alabama. No doubt. No doubt. All right. Let's talk a little football bear. You were mentioning before we took our first time out, we talked a little bit about some of these cupcake games. And you made a comment about that that maybe, uh, maybe you need to play some of these cupcakes to start off with versus the better things because things happen. Yeah. I mean, there's two sides to it. Like I said, if you play a cupcake, I don't know if you really find it out how good a team you are. I like teams playing, you know, better teams, but on the flip side and I mentioned this in the break, my good buddy, Mac Brown, who coached me at Southern Miss, by the way, uh, he's now the head coach of North Carolina. Everybody knows the legendary Mac Brown. The oldest coach out there right now is one. That's right. They play a good team in Minnesota Thursday night and they lose their starting quarterback. He breaks his leg during the game. So now he's gone for the season. So when you do play a tougher team, you risk something like that happening. And so now they've got to go with the backup quarterback the rest of the season. So that's the flip side to it. Do you play a really good team and risk losing maybe your quarterback or do you play a easy cupcake team and nobody gets hurt and you run up a score and you get a lot of people in the game. Yeah. Yeah, I guess. So it's really, you know, whatever, whatever floats your boat as a coach. The only good side that I can see to play in the cupcake games and I was listening to the first half driving up here, Barry, is the money. And there's a lot of money that is being paid to Western Kentucky to play today. They're going to turn around and give some of that back to the next team they play. Right. Southern Miss going on the road to Kentucky. Some of these schools that are smaller and and Southern Miss unfortunately has fallen to that, but they make a good amount of paycheck that helps the program. And it does give that athlete at Southern Miss in Western Kentucky and some in Alabama A&M playing Auburn today. It gives them a chance to compete and and compare themselves against it. I do agree with you in the fact that I would rather see Notre Dame and Texas A&M like we're going to see tonight. Absolutely. Let's hit the bucket and let's go. There you go. And and I do agree with that. On the positive side for those athletes that don't get to play an SEC team, that's the only good side of it. Let me let me ask you this and guys jumping in Matt's only get your thoughts on as well. We see Auburn taking on Alabama A&M. So you're keeping that in state. Why don't we see Alabama and South Alabama play? Why don't we see Alabama and Troy play. I'm scared. That's what they were scared to Southern Miss Ole Miss and Mississippi State did not want to play Southern Miss. Absolutely. They did not want to play us. And Southern Miss beat Alabama once. That's right. That's right. Well, you know, I was it was it. Okay. Yeah. You got to think about these schools too that come into these big stadiums like for instance, Western Kentucky and Alabama. These kids will probably never play football in front of 90,000 people ever again and have that experience. That's got to be a big part of they've they've probably toured the facility already. They've probably seen everything in the field of Alabama and what an experience to be on the field and be a part of something. Well, it might not be your home field, but that is a huge history. I mean, the history they're getting out of their visit there and the life experience they have, I would think is pretty big for a lot of these players. Talking about Jeff Bauer coming on, you know what Jeff said to me several years ago, he said, I like going to play Auburn. I like going to play Alabama. I like going to play Florida State because when we see their weight room, we don't compare and that just builds my guys up. We don't have what they have and it makes us stronger. It makes us better and Jeff played off of that for many, many years. Look what those guys got that we don't we're still going to beat their ass. There you go. There you go. Okay. It just went viral. Congratulations Bobby. You just blew up the internet and you just got us kicked on that radio. That's our problem. That's a common name and that's why this this Saturday in September is the best Saturday. Boy, it's you and this statement. I don't know about you guys today boy. Well, I want to talk about Georgia real quick. Of course, Georgia and Clemson will face off here in just a little bit. They'll kick off in Atlanta at the Mercedes and the last time Georgia played there, it didn't work out too well for them. All right. I was at that ball game. Me and Taylor went for that Alabama Georgia game. Of course, they did win in the Orange Bowl, but what's your thought? Very give me your thoughts on this ball game that we're going to see a little bit later on between those two because I think for me, a 14 point spread, that's a lot. That's a lot of points. Yeah. Well, you got to think all the momentum goes to Clemson. You're playing the number one team in the nation. You don't get that opportunity a whole lot of times. You're the underdog. Dabo Sweeney does a phenomenal job playing up to that row, that underdog row. He loves that with his Clemson teams. I think they're going to go in there fired up. Georgia's got a lot of talent as well. It's going to be like a home game to them being in Atlanta. So, Clemson's got an uphill struggle, but Dabo is a super motivator. You better not don't sleep on Clemson in this game. Yeah. Well, but if you flip over and talk a little bit about Georgia, I mean, you got Georgia brought in Trevor NTN, who came from Florida in that running back position, I think is going to be fantastic. Of course, and Beck comes back who could have went to the NFL and picked up a lot of money. I mean, he's making pretty good money at Georgia, I would say, but he could have picked up a lot of money in the NFL. But they've got some returners. I think they've got nine returners on offense and eight on defense plus their kicker and punter. But it's, I think Georgia has a lot of momentum right now or motivation. Let me put it like that. They have motivation because they didn't get in that top top four last year. They care that pressure too, Randy, being the number one team. That's a lot of pressure. Yep. You're expected to win. You're expected to win big. And if you don't, and those kids realize that. So, yeah, there's a motivation, but there's a lot of pressure when you're the top dog, you know, number one team in the country. You've got to live up to that. Isn't this the third year, third year in a row that Georgia started the season of number one? Yeah, I look, they've only lost two games since 2020. That's right. Okay. And I think we mentioned, did we mention what team that was? I believe it was started by that. Yeah, that's right. That mentioned that to David Musial a week or so ago, and he quickly hung out. Anyway, no, no, but I'll tell you another game that I am interested in, and you mentioned it, is the Texas A&M and Notre Dame game. Of course, we know that Texas A&M's new coach comes from Duke, Elko, and Notre Dame's quarterback comes from Duke, and Mr. Riley Leonard, who is from Fair Hope, and we just played for Elko. You played for Elko, so it'll be that'll be fun to watch how that game kind of works out. How do you see that, Bob? You got any thoughts on that game? Oh, well, I'm kind of pulling all SEC, but when Riley Leonard's at quarterback, I'm gonna be kind of pulling for both. You know, it's kind of a toss up, but I want him to play so well, and Notre Dame to play well, but you're going into college station. It'll be a tough one, but I'm all SEC. I'm gonna pull for A&M. I tell you, with A&M right now, they are actually favored by three, and they're 20th ranked versus Notre Dame's 7th ranking. That tells you right there how hard it is to play, college station right now. All right, let's take a time out. When we come back, we're scheduled to talk with coach Jeff Bowers right here on Southern Fairways. Don't go anywhere. This is NFL kicker Robbie Gold. When I'm along the golf coast, you better believe I'm with the Southern Fairways Radio. Your host, Randy Bergen, gets you latest golf and sports information from Randy and all his guests. Enjoy sports updates, scores, and a few laughs with one of the most entertaining shows in radio. I'm Robbie Gold, and I hope you're having a great day. Happy to, boys. That's how you do it, boys, right there. Hey, welcome back to Southern Fairways. I am Randy Bergen joined by Matt Brant, PGA Teaching Professional, and may I say, all American cheer leader at Southern Miss, we're swinging by the hall, and also joining us, former college coach, former high school coach, former receiver at Southern Miss, and you went on there for a little bit in the pros. Coach Barry Gibson and Barry, we got one of your dear friends on the line with us, Coach Jeff Bower. Absolutely. I tell you about one of the greats. Jeff was our leader at Southern Miss. He was our quarterback. I had the privilege of catching some passes, you know, from Jeff. Of course, we ran the beer. We didn't throw it a whole lot, but Jeff's just a great quarterback, and of course, the winning is head football coach at Southern Miss. And coach Jeff Bower on the line with us. Coach, thank you for taking time to be with us this morning. I do want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family right now, and I know it's a special time and appreciate you taking time to be with us. Well, thank you. It's good to be with you all, and to add to what Barry said, you know, about throwing the football. No, we, we didn't throw it a lot. If you wanted to see us throw the ball, you better get there and watch the three games. Well, Barry said that you were the only one that could throw it far enough because he was, now, what this is what he told me, you'll have to help me through this coach. He said he was the fastest white boy that wore number eight, had goed a lot, had goed a lot. You know, I didn't tell him that. He could run. He could really run. He could. And I will tell you this, too. There was never a hair on his head out of place. Well, some things never change. I don't know what I just, thanks. You know, he could pull his helmet off and it looked like he just got out of the shower and pruned himself and everything. Oh, my goodness. And it is true today. There is, there is no doubt. Coach, let's, let's talk a little about your, your coaching career there. You were, you were spent 29 years at, at Southern Miss, both as a player, as a quarterback there, assistant coaching and head coaching. I guess one of the questions that I would have is the fact of being able to be a player at a university or a school and then being able to have the opportunity to come back and be a head coach. How, how did that feel for you and what kind of experience was that? Oh, it was a good, really good experience, great experience. Just the fact that, you know, you, you had so much loyalty for the program in the university. You know, you, you're tied there with, you know, support groups alumni, that type thing and, you know, I just think the fact that Southern Miss is my school and I think when you go to, it's great to come back to, you know, where you went to school and played and, and, you know, certainly I was very fortunate to get that position and really enjoyed the entire time. Uh, who visited with coach Jeff Bauer right here on Southern Fairways, Barry? Jeff, I just wanted to ask you, uh, you know, you, you were there for 18 years as a head coach and like I mentioned to Randy, uh, you know, the winningest coach we've got, but was there ever, was there one game, one season that stood out to you that is probably your favorite memory during your career? Oh, well, there was a lot of good ones, uh, you know, certainly the Liberty Bowl win in 97 over pit. Um, we got the really good football team. I remember Walt Harris, our coach told us, told me after the game, he said, we haven't played anybody as good as you all year long. And, you know, that says a lot. They were at a tough leg. And, um, you know, that, that stands out, I think probably the turning point because it took me about three or four years to, um, you know, to really get it going well. Um, the final game of the year, we, we got to where we were playing pretty well and played LSU the last game and, and needed to win for a winning season and, and won that game. And, and, um, that I think was the real turning point. And we were pretty darn good after that for a long time. Mm hmm. Bobby. Hey, coach, Bobby Hall here. I was there in that stadium that day and it was cold, but it was a, it was a great day. Thanks for all you're doing for Southern Miss and thanks for all you did in the past. And please give Debbie my best and wish you the best. Uh, I'm going to change the subject. How's your golf game? I hadn't played in over 10 years, believe it or not. Oh my gosh. Yeah. And, um, you know, I loved it and played as much as I could, as much as the coach could for a long time. But, um, I don't know, just, um, got away from it and kind of lost my golfing group. And I figured out where it's probably not just playing the game that I enjoy being around so many good friends and having an opportunity to go out and enjoy the time with them. But, um, maybe one day I might do it. Well, I hope you do. Jeff was a great player, as good golf. And I think he won the coach's tournament one year. Uh, if I remember correctly, but, uh, good to talk to you, coach. And, uh, thank you for all you're doing to help support Southern Miss. And we'll stay in touch with you. I'll turn them back. I'll turn them back over to Randy and Barry. All right. Let me, let me ask real quick, man. I know you got a question coach. Yeah, coach, coach, great, great having you on, uh, love the history and experience and all the time you spent as a head coach at Southern Miss. I got to ask you, and I think coaching seems like it's changing quite a bit now with the NIL and, and, uh, transfer portal. What do you think about all that, uh, being, being a, uh, you know, a developer of people back then, as opposed to now, what are your thoughts on all those changes? I'm not too fond of them to be honest with you. Um, you know, I boy, it's a difficult time. I think as a head coach, uh, you know, you don't know what your roster's going to be from year to year. So how do you, how do you have a chance to develop kids and, and, um, and that's how we got this. We brought kids in here, a lot of them were overlooked in high school, but, you know, we had time to develop them in two, three years down the road. They were really good players. I don't know that you're going to have that kind of situation anymore where you can do that. Um, but it's, um, as always, we're changing and, um, I'm sure I would adjust it, but, um, I don't like the, you know, I don't like the transfer portal and, uh, pretty liberal rules going around that and, uh, the NIL, um, you know, that's, uh, that's something, you know, that, um, is extremely different. Um, um, you know, I, uh, I'm thinking of Southern Miss and it's tough to be competitive with a lot of other universities, you know, from a financial standpoint. It seems like, I know I've talked to a few head coaches and one of them, I asked him, I said, you know, is hiring a good football coach and recruiter that important anymore, he said, well, good football coach, yes, but Hank recruiting is all how much you offer him in NIL. And, um, you know, that doesn't fit well with me. Yeah, and, coach, and I agree with you and I think that's, uh, one of the issues right now is, watching college football, we love college football because those guys went out and they, they, they played football with, from their heart and they wanted to win and that's why they were there and they knew that there was only going to be a small percentage that moved on to the next level. Nowadays, it's, there's no sense of loyalty and it's, if you give me $10 more, I'm going to leave and come to you and I think that some of the older coaches right now and I'm a coach to bore, you know, had talked about that in Alabama. It's, it is, since it has changed, you've got to, you've got to adapt to it and it's almost like you're not able to go out and recruit more people or recruit these good players because you're too busy trying to continue to recruit your own team. So it makes it very, very difficult. Yeah, and have a little fruit in your own team all the time. And, and I know talking to Will Hall, the coach at Southern Miss now, they, they spend a week late in the spring, just kind of rerecruiting their roster before they go out in the road and do their spring recruiting. It's, it's, it's totally a different landscape now. We're visiting with former University of Southern Miss head football coach, Jeff Bauer, Barry. Hey, Jeff, just to change gears real quick, before we run out of time, I want to personally, as, you know, a former, former teammate of yours, I want to thank you and Joe Bryant. There's a big reunion coming up next week for a lot of players that played at Southern Miss and a lot of guys are coming. I know, you know, you put a lot of work into this, putting this thing together with you and Joe. So let me just, first of all, thank you for doing that. And that we're all looking forward to it. I have heard from more teammates through the, you know, Facebook, phone calls, text messages, very excited. Thanks for doing that, Jeff. And just share with us what that means to you, all these guys coming together next week for a reunion. Yeah, well, Joe Bryant has done the bulk of the work. He's done a great job. And, you know, I've helped out and we've had a couple people, other people help out. But it's something that I'm really looking forward to. I think we're going to have in the neighborhood of 120, maybe 150 former student athletes from the 70s. So, you know, Barry, probably the last time we'll get a chance to see these guys probably at first time we see each other in a long time, 50 years, maybe in some cases. But it might be the last time that we'll have a chance to get back together. And it's something I really look forward to. It should be a lot of fun. I know y'all are going to have just a blast. Just catch it up. And the time will go by so fast and you're going to have to play in another one. And who can tell the biggest lies? I'm going to go ahead and put my money on you, Barry. I'll be up there in the top five. Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness. Hey, Coach, let me ask you as we turn and look at some of the football games that'll be happening today. Real quick, we only got about a minute, minute and a half left here. Of course, Clemson and Georgia, they, and you being a Georgia guy, Georgia, being from Georgia, Roswell, Georgia, more specifically, how do you like this Georgia Clemson game? Who do you see winning it? Yeah, I'm a little bit of, I signed the Georgia and played there a year prior to transferring Southern Mets. So, I still stay in touch with a lot of guys there that I played with that year. I like Georgia. I just, you know, yeah, they've recruited extremely well and, you know, everybody knows how good they've been over the last few years. But, you know, who knows? I've not had a chance to watch either team and practice. So, I'm not sure, but it ought to be a heck of a ball game. How about the Notre Dame Texas A&M game? Of course, we know the storyline on that. Elco goes from Duke to Texas A&M as the coach. The quarterback from Duke goes to Notre Dame, Riley Leonard. So, they'll face each other. Who do you see winning that ball game? No, I'd probably like Notre Dame in that game. That is at A&M, isn't it? It is. It is. Come on to 630. Yeah, well, just from what I hear, I'll pick A&M in that one. There you go. There you go. Coach, listen, our time is up. It went by so fast. I want to thank you so much and Barry for coming on and spending some time with us. It was great to talk with you. Well, thank you. Good talking to you. And look forward to seeing you, Barry. You bet. I can't wait till next weekend. It's going to be a blast, Jeff. Thank you so much, buddy. Thank you. All right. All right. There you go. Coach, Jeff Bauer, I'm going to tell you, listen, guys, you know, he had a winning record. There's 14 final, 14 seasons. He had a winning record. In a bowl game, 10 of his last 11 seasons. I mean, I guarantee phenomenal job. That graduation rate was great, too. Yes. Yeah, the GPA under his, under his... Jeff did it right. He was one of those guys who did it the right way. He was like Gene Stalin's go to class. He got him to go to class. There ain't no question about that. That's what we do at Alabama. We get them. We get them to class and we get them out there on that field. Bobby, I think you were a freshman whenever Barry was a senior, Barry and Jeff were a senior. Yeah, they were seniors and I had just graduated. Beeson Academy came to Southern was glad to be there. And we went on the road that year because we didn't have a stadium. That's right. We had homecoming at Gulfport High School. That's right. Well, you went on to coach. That's right. That's right. Oh my goodness. We have a road warriors, man. That's right. We will. That was a lot of fun right there. That was a lot of fun. All right, let's take a quick time out. When we come back, we'll talk to more college football. Hey, what's happening to pudros? What's happening to booms? We'll jump into some food as well. Don't go anywhere. More Southern fairways right after this. You know me. No show was complete without little boss gags. So, and I've had people come up and say, "Randy, I enjoy your show, but who the heck is boss gags?" So, oh my goodness. Hey, welcome back to Southern Fairways, Randy, Bergen, Matt, Bramp, Bobby Hall, the legendary Barry Gibson. Very, it was great to talk with Jeff and you're going to have a blast on Friday night and then Saturday at the ballgame. Who is Southern Miss playing today? Kentucky. That's right. You're elected. That's right. No Eagles. Talk about that game a little bit. Well, of course, we're a huge underdog. We'll start there with that. I think we're a young team. We did have a couple of transfers in through the portal that I think will help us. The receiver that came in from Ole Miss, I think is going to be a good addition and along with the quarterback, we had a really good quarterback transfer in. What's his name by me? I forgot the name. I don't remember. Came in from Florida State and he had played four or five games with Florida State and decided to come to Southern Miss. Had some offers from South Carolina, some other schools, but ended up at Southern Miss. So, we'll see how he does. And I just think when you play in the SEC team, the size factor really comes into play in the interior line. It's all up front. Who has the best lineman? And I don't know if our guys can match up size-wise with Kentucky. That's going to be tough. Maybe they can, maybe they can out quick them, but it's going to be fun to watch. Now, let me ask you this. So, Kentucky is favored by 25 and a half points. Would you, not that you're a betting man, would you, would you take the points and go with Southern? I would. I would. Might be a lock of the week there, boys. You need, you need to know why he's asking you that. Oh my goodness. I need a minute on my app. There you go. Yeah. We'll come back to you just a few moments here. Is there, is there a good Bobby? Well, we've had a couple upsets already this week. What was it? New Mexico State got upset. And Georgia State beat Florida State last week in Ireland, you know. So, in a aisle is making maybe things a little more. You never know. So, I think I would take Southern Miss in the points today. Let me, let me run through the SEC real quick. We talked a lot about Georgia and Clemson. Of course, it comes on 11 o'clock right after the show here on ABC and ESPN. Plus Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech on ESPN at 11. Number 15 Tennessee will host Chattanooga. That'll be on the SEC Network at 11.45. Here's a good one. Colorado State and number four, Texas. Texas is going to be tough this year, of course. We got some, we got some text last night from our, from our Texas buddy, John Dragot. But that'll be on ESPN at 2.30. This is a game that's going to be interesting. 2.30 also on ABC is Florida and Miami. I got to tell you, you better watch Miami this year. The other thing Miami is going to be tough. Yeah, Miami has been picked by a bunch of folks to end up in the top five position for the years out and ready for the playoffs and really going into, for Miami to go into the swamp and be favored by two and a half is pretty strong because that's kind of like the disparity between playing at a college station or, or, or death valley. I mean, you got a lot of points from your fans playing in that stadium. And I love that, you know, again, opening game, big rivalry. Miami, Florida, man, they hate each other. Let's, let's kick college football off season with that. Man, I love that matchup this early in the season. Yeah, I do too. It's going to be Napier's going to have to do it. He's on the hot seat. There's no doubt. South Carolina will host Old Dominion, Mississippi State will host Eastern Kentucky at six o'clock tonight on ESPN, Western Kentucky comes into Tuscaloosa. They'll get some practice in. Six also, Furman goes to Old Miss and then at six thirty on ESPN, you've got Notre Dame ranked number seven, taking on the Aggies of Texas A&M ranked number 20. That's, like I said, six thirty on ABC. That's going to be a good ball game to watch. I just think it's going to be really, really interesting to watch out how Leonard quarterbacks and how Elco, his strategy to defend him. Well, I'm pulling for A&M. I think Riley Leonard, I want him as a Fair Hope citizen and played at Fair Hope High School and played so great at Duke, but he's coming off of injuries. You know, he hadn't really proved himself and he's had to take the starting role and he hadn't really done a lot of reps, so to speak, till he got his injury back. But he's still number one, so they see a lot of confidence in him. And I love what Jeff Bauer said. You know, by the way, I love what Jeff Bauer said while ago, he was picking Notre Dame until he found out they're playing at College Station. There's going to be 108,000 screaming people in College Station, so then he said, "Oh, well, then I'm taking A&M." But I think, well, I don't know how many were at Notre Dame, maybe during their Golden Navy Day. I don't think it was 108, but it'll be interesting. We'll see what happens. For sure, of course, Alabama A&M travels to Auburn, six thirty game on ESP and plus and the SEC Network Plus. Southern Miss at Kentucky, you can see that on the SEC Network at 645. Now, tomorrow, how about this game? This is going to be a good one. Number 23 University of Southern Cal travels into Las Vegas, where LSU will also go to Las Vegas. Those two teams match up at 630 on ABC. That'll be a game to watch. Yeah, that's going to be a lot of fun. I think LSU's favorite by about four points in that game, and that's probably a good spread. I don't know if I'm putting money on it because you just don't know. These teams going into neutral sight, mostly neutral sight. And they're just taking bourbon street and moving it. It's good that it's not in Baton Rouge because Bobby and I have been banned from Baton Rouge. Oh lord. I'll tell you one thing though, LSU's a team. You better not sleep on either. They could be a beast. They could be a team to really watch this year. They got a load of talent down there. So watch out for LSU. That'll be a fun game. Hey, Matt, real quick, what's going on over at Blue Jokes? Well, I'll do right now. I'll tell you what, we've got the Decorator ready. We've got the missing fans on. We've got some snapper that just came in yesterday for our fresh catch. And we're just going to sit back. We're going to open them doors and let you guys come in. We've got two TVs over our bar area. You're going to watch them sports. They're there for you. If you want to come out and just relax between your games, maybe you got one of the morning you're watching, one of the after one of the night. Come out at three o'clock. Give a little happy hour on and we'll help you celebrate your win from the morning and celebrate the game to come for that night. And if you and if you happen to lose your team happens to lose, you have a beer in which they can drop out here. Absolutely. We have we have a remedy for all things. There you go. Hey, let me meet you real quick. Boomsday kitchen is now at the Pigly Wiggly in Fair Hope. She is no longer at the fourth. So no need to go to the fort. If you're looking for Boomsday kitchen, go to Fair Hope. I've got to tell you. And I want to thank you. If you've been a if you've been by to see her, thank you so much for your support. She is Bob, you know, she is kicking it down yesterday. She is kicking it down there and you were by there. We went by my wife and I went by last night to see her and they were just people lined up to get her food. But I wanted a Danny Chi, but I couldn't get one. See, y'all got time for a quick story. Danny Chi. Okay. One of our dear friends, Orlando Macquarie passed away years ago. This is in 2015. Okay. Right. And we were going to go to to his waking out more. Of course, his brother, Woody Macquarie was on the Clemson coaching staff. Right. But Barry Barry wants to ride with us and boom gets in the back seat. And we meet at the Dillard's parking lot in Spanish for it. And she said, can we get the coffee or something? Yeah, we'll go right there to Starbucks and get a coffee. She said, I'll take a Danny Chi too. I looked at Barry and he looked at me and we said, what was that? She said, Danny Chi, Danny Chi, I'm looking on the menu. Barry's looking on the menu across me. We're looking for a Danny Chi. And I was like, baby, you know, Danny Chi over here. And the girl in, you know, in the window so you could hear through this. She could hear that. She was saying, a what? Danny Chi. It took about three or four minutes and we finally figured it out. Yep. It was a cheese Danish. That's right. That's right. That's good. Thanks. Oh my good. Danny Chi was so funny. But I want to tell you, if you have an opportunity, go buy and see boom and boom start getting she will give you a smile. Okay. There's no doubt. She appreciates you. You being there? I'm going to be able to work in a day. I'm going to help them out a little bit. So that being said, the food will still be cooked by the food. Yeah, I'm not touching the food. I'm just, yeah, I'm just, I'm the wash boy. That's right. So, but uh, now Bobby, hey, real quick, let me just thank some of our sponsors. McConnell automotive tricks on golf, boudreau's cage and grill, clean lace golf club and Foley, Ben Murphy roofing, Eastern Shore, Toyota and Hyundai. Got to go check out our friends over at craft farms, golf course and golf shores. Also, peninsula golf course will be there on September the 15th for the Southern Fairways golf tour. I want to thank Lisa Johnson realtor, Fairfield golf works, also quick, quick golf club, boom, tight kitchen and the PSR radio network. So thank all of them for sponsoring us today. Bobby, what is your tip for today? I get a lot of rules questions. People call me for rules all the time. High school practices starting up. They're getting ready for spring and people call me all the time for tournaments and stuff and say, hey, we got this going on. What's going on? Please take the time to sit down at night on a rainy day or when you have a break, read the definitions of the rules of golf. Just knowing the definitions of what is a stroke, the team ground, what is a penalty area, those will help you get through the rules quite a bit. Read the definitions. Good stuff right there. And if you don't know the rules, we'll play that Robin Williams clip for you. Give me a hold of that. In Randy, I got to tell you, it has been a blast and of all the things my old buddy Jeff Bauer and my quarterback could have talked about. All the great plays, maybe some of the passes he threw to me, he could have talked about, he talked about my hair. That was his man. That was the thing he wanted to talk about. Too much, too much. Hey, thanks for hanging out. He was the fastest hour in radio for the whole staff. And for Steve Stanley, our producer, Randy Berry, and listening, hitting the same prayer. God bless America. Guys, you got to go out and vote. See you next week. Bye-bye everybody. Amen.
