Hunter Biden's trial on tax charges begins on Thursday in Los Angeles. The President's son has been accused of failing to pay more than a million dollars in taxes related to his business dealings overseas. Jerry's election for Hunter Biden's trial is set to begin in a Los Angeles federal courtroom in the President's son's second criminal trial this year. In June, he was convicted of gun charges in Delaware for which he could face prison time. Now he's being charged with failing to file and pay taxes and other tax offenses between 2016 and 2019. Well, the case has less political importance. After Joe Biden's decision not to stand for re-election, Joe could present damaging details about the younger Biden's alleged extravagant lifestyle and business dealings. That could be a distraction for Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign. Concerns are rising in the European Parliament over Hungary's decision to extend its National Card Program to Russian and Belarusian citizens. It's leading to questions about the security of the Schengen border-free zone, Pablo Gutiérrez reports. Jerry's recent decision to extend the National Card to Russian and Belarusian nationals is causing alarming Brussels. The Card, originally for foreign workers, grants up to two years of residence. EU officials, including Commissioner Yabla Johansson, worry this undermined sanctions and poses a security threat. Johansson has requested details from Hungary asking whether enhanced security checks are in place for citizens from countries seen as hostile to the EU. Hungarian officials argue the program meets EU standards, but the issue has sparked a heated debate over the EU's Schengen zone integrity, which allows passport-free travel across 27 European nations, Pablo Gutiérrez Budapest. At least 21 people are missing after a migrant shipwreck off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa. The Italian Coast Guard rescued seven people from the boat, with survivors saying it set off from Libya with 28 on board in total. Our Italy correspondent, Giles Gibson, reports. The Italian Coast Guard carried out the rescue operation about 10 nautical miles to the southwest of Lampedusa, which sits between the coast of northern Africa and Sicily. All seven of the survivors who were plucked from the boat, which had taken on a lot of water, were male and Syrian nationals. They've been taken to Lampedusa to receive medical treatment as the Coast Guard continues its search operation. A group of researchers led by the University of Texas Austin say they've discovered an antibody that can neutralize all known variants of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It could be a major breakthrough in fighting the virus which has already claimed more than 7 million lives globally. Tony Waterman has more. The researchers say they discovered and isolated a neutralizing antibody called SC27 from the blood of a single patient. That antibody attaches to the virus and prevents it from infecting cells in the body. The team was then able to use existing technology to obtain the exact molecular sequence of the antibody, opening the possibility of mass manufacturing for future treatments. One option would be to incorporate the antibody into a universal vaccine. Tony Waterman, Texas. The Trump and Harris campaigns have agreed that microphones will be muted during next week's Presidential debate while the other candidate is speaking. That means neither the former president or vice president will be able to interrupt each other. MacArthur reports from Washington. Kamala Harris' team had pushed for mics to remain on throughout the debate, but team Trump said the rules should be the same as the June debate between the former president and Joe Biden, as that is what both campaigns had agreed to. Trump on Wednesday again criticized the debate host, ABC, calling it the "most dishonest network, the meanest, the nastiest." He also said, without backing up the claim that Harris will have an unfair advantage by getting the questions in advance. I'm Nick Harper from Washington. U.S. companies added the fewest jobs last month since the start of 2021, according to payroll's processing firm ADP. U.S. correspondent Kate Fisher reports. Companies hired just 99,000 workers last month, less than the downwardly revised 111,000 in July. The ADP data also showed that private sector payrolls grew at the weakest pace since 2021, which it said was another sign of a worsening labor market. ADP bases its findings on payroll data covering more than 25 million U.S. private sector employees. U.S. central bank officials say they're now more concerned about risks to the labor market than inflation. The Fed's expected to start cutting interest rates this month. Kate Fisher, Washington. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says the people of the Gaza Strip are experiencing the most severe food crisis in the history of its food crisis reporting. The organization on Thursday released its mid-year update, reporting on all food crises around the world.
