Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo say 129 inmates died as they tried to escape from the country's largest prison in the capital of Kinshasa on Monday. The country's interior minister Jacques Comanchebani says 24 of the inmates were shot dead by police officers and the rest died of suffocation as they jostled to flee the detention facility. Chris O'Kamringa has more from Kinshasa. The latest government figures of the number of inmates who died as they attempted to escape from the Makala Central prison is in stark contrast to what was announced on Monday. Only two inmates were reported to have died but the interior minister now says the figure has risen to 129. Officials say several prisoners broke one of the walls of the facility late at night and escaped. The guards on duty opened fire as more prisoners tried to escape. An inquiry has been opened to establish how the inmates fled the prison. Makala Central prison is the largest detention facility in the DRC. It's overcrowded with prisoners living in unsanitary conditions. Authorities say it was built to accommodate 1,500 inmates but currently holds around 14,000 of them. Chris O'Kamringa, Kinshasa.
