The United States Biden administration says the next few days will be critical to get a ceasefire and hostage deal in place. After Sunday's announcement of the execution of six Israeli captives in Gaza, a general strike is now underway in Israel as demonstrators demand the government come to an agreement with Hamas to end the war and release the remaining hostages. Sarah Coates has more from Tel Aviv. Anger and grief continues to spill out onto the streets of Israel with a general strike well underway with demonstrators blocking major roads while the international Ben Gurion Airport remains closed with hundreds of thousands of people saying they're not going to work. The far right is hailing historic election results in Germany after winning a state vote for the first time since World War II and coming a close second in another key race. Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz has acknowledged the results are bitter for his governing coalition nationally from Berlin, Trent Murray reports. The far right alternative for Germany party or AFD placed first in the state of Thuringia with almost 33% of the vote, while in the state of Saxony they placed second with 30.6%, just 1% behind Germany's main Conservative party, the CDU, the AFD campaigned calling for the mass deportation of refugees from Germany. Both state polls are in regions that were part of the former communist East Germany, where support for Germany's traditional parties is collapsing. Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats received only 6% in Thuringia and 7% in Saxony. Despite the strong showing at the ballot box, the AFD will likely struggle to form government with all other parties refusing to work with them to build a coalition.
