It will be my playground to talk to my friends, but we're ending Blitz month the way we have the last few years and we are ending it with maybe the most plugged in man covering case state athletics. You can hear and see him on two different podcasts. One with the Kansas City sports network, the three ma pod and on the KSO show. He is the head honcho over at case state online and he has been grinding to cover the cats over the last handful of years. Ohio once claimed him, but now I catch him occasionally saying we on accident when referring to case state. So I think he is now one of our own. It is the man, the myth, the legend, my former, you know, come patriot that I used to watch Thursday night football with at the peanut. Derek Young, Derek, are there any good wing spots in Manhattan that compared to the peanut? You know, it's different time. But I will say like, I like tall grass tap house. Korean fried wings. Those are actually really, really good. So Jimmy and I usually go to tap house. Anytime we do a podcast at Manhattan Brewing Company and I love their bond me. So no free ads. I know that way back in the day they sponsored the KSO show. Yeah, they did. Yeah. They did shows there. Oh, yeah. I remember. It was a fun time. You know what, you know, places come, places go. And one of the places that came as Manhattan Brewing Company, it's awesome. But what, and I know it's not that old, but like, I don't think tall grass tap house does give enough credit. It's a really good place. Well, also again, I come into Manhattan. I'm typically going to games and coming home, stopping at Manhattan Brewing Company. So I don't venture anywhere away from points. I'm getting a couple of points at Manhattan Brewing Company. Oh, I love points. But I get a couple of points. I'm like, all right. Do I have time to sit down and get something? Do I have to get something at a concession stand at a basketball game? If I can sit down, I will go to tall grass tap house. And like I said, they're bond me. They have, oh man, what's the Canadian thing? Gravy cheese curds on fries. Poutine. I get the poutine there. So I think maybe the next time I'll have to get the Korean wings. Yeah, we go there to eat a lot. I go to Colburn Hills to eat a lot too. Well, there you go. There you go. Well, yes, that is Derek Young. He's been covering the team and Derek. You've been kind of giving me crap. You're like, when do I get to come on blitz month? It's like I like to start off with Mitch. I like to end with you. I'm a man of tradition. Have you just been itching to get all your predictions out there? What's going on? I have and I just enjoy talking to cats, of course. And it's almost football season. And I haven't been on Bosco's in a while. So it was probably a little bit withdrawal there as well. You mentioned everything that I'm on. Very true. Retired from power cat game day now. Yes. Congratulations on your retirement from power cat game day. You are a busy man. And that's typically why I tend to go to Mason and to Drew. They do a lot of great work on the KSO show. But they only have the one show. You know, you used to have power cat game day. You've had three on now for a few years. You have the KSO show. So I don't want to bog you down. But now since you're not doing power cat game dam, I have to call on you a little bit more frequently. Yeah. I have no problem with that. It's a little bit of a. It was a little bit of a chore that I was ready to relinquish. And I also wanted to make sure, if I did, that it was still a KSO present. So I'm really glad that Mason gets to be on power cat game day now. Yeah. And again, Mason, great chemistry with Mitch. I can't wait to listen on my drive up with my father on Saturday. Two days from now from the folks who are listening this on release day. So two days from now, a handful of other folks. I think it's going. I mean, Mitch does a great job hosting that thing. So I can't wait to see where that goes. We've mentioned them a couple of times before we get into the meat of it. Blitz month is sponsored by Manhattan Brewing Company. Look, it doesn't matter if you like something crisp, like the official tailgating beer of Vasco's voice towny wheat, or I'm drinking the Fowler wheat today, their whipped beer. They just trust me to hype them up. That's what I say to you guys. Love Jake. Love everyone over there. Let's get into it. So you're just like everyone who's in this hashtag content creation game. You've had a million predictions between, you know, right before media day, going back to like May and June, you know, basketball season ends, you get like half a breather. And then we all have to start talking about big 12 football. What, you know, whether it's a team, whether it's a prediction, what has changed the most for you when you look at the landscape of this conference from like May and June, even before media days to where we sit now with the season kicking off today as folks are listening for the big 12 conference. I'm a pretty stubborn person. So not a lot. You know, I'm going to give you a little trouble because I, because I digest all this type of stuff. You've been all over the place with at least the top two. I think I've heard you predict like six different big 12 championship games. So probably definitely because I think it's really a three team race personally. So I've probably been all over the place with three. Can't stay local mistake and Utah. And if Utah wasn't a newcomer to the league, I would probably be consistently on them. But I hate taking new teams to win their league in the first year because it doesn't happen. That's what, if Texas was not new to the SEC, I would probably pick Texas. If Oregon was not new to the big 10, I would probably pick Oregon. If Utah was not new to the big 12, I would probably pick Utah. But it's, if you look at history, anything, especially teams with remarkably different schedules, they can still be good, but they're usually not championship quality. And I have nothing bad to say about Utah. Maybe they're fans, but Utah, the program and, and Kyle would have him. I respect the program and I respect the coach. But just coming into a new league and just expecting to just wax poetic and, and coast and win a title. It just doesn't happen. And the funny thing is like they think the closest thing to that ever was when Missouri first got to the SEC and they almost got it, which is bizarre to think about, but other than that, there hasn't really even been any other remotely close calls that I can at least recall. So it, that's why I like, I want to say Utah, but I can't because that's just stuck in my mind. I want to say Kansas State and they probably, they might have the most upside of any team in the league. But then I think about all the newcomers and first year contributors and it's not always common for a team constructed in that way to win a conference. So that's why I think the happy medium and, and why I haven't really been too far from it. But like you said, I have had different variations of predictions as Oklahoma State, just because I think they're the perfect blend of a little bit of quality and a little bit of continuity and having perhaps. Well, we know they have a top three or four coach, you can argue, probably one through four in this league, to be quite honest, but Mike Dundee is somewhere in that top four with the most probably returning production on the most important spots. They, they're, they probably the best linebacker room in the between turning good production because I like to, I like to talk about how I was saying, but again, 76. Me and John Kurtz, but from the three mall podcast, we butt heads a lot. But one thing that I like that he says, because I think it's true and I think you're along those lines is like, yeah, they have all this returning production, but they are so inflated by a, a bizarre game in Manhattan last year. So that's why I back off, I was state to an Arizona again, new league, new team, and a new coach. So I think Arizona has the as, as the potential to maybe be the disappointment of the league, because you got new league and new coach. I think that's tough, but I think Oklahoma State is a pretty good blend and less red flags. Hey, it's Kaylee Cuoco for Priceline, ready to go to your happy place for a happy price? Yeah, you bring up Arizona. They might be the most fascinating team because I think they have the best quarterback wide receiver duo in the conference, maybe in the entire country. They do bring back a lot of those offensive weapons, lost some of the guys on defense. I picked them to go six and three when I picked every single big 12 game had them six and three had them going eight and four because I have K state beating them on that Friday night. But it could fluctuate like we know nothing about this guy who is at San Jose state. Yes, he won more than the average coach does at San Jose state. But I mean, look, he might be ass and they might end up being seven and five, six and six. Yeah, there's that's a wide range of outcomes possible in Arizona, a wide range of outcomes possible on KU. I don't think there's actually a wide range of outcomes possible on K state, but it's just like are you on the upper side of that or the lower side of that is where it comes down to same thing with Oklahoma state. I think you got, and probably Utah, but the new league thing is a quirk there. So that's why those three are probably the most sure things. If I had a dark horse. I don't think it's a state. It might be Kansas if Jalen Daniels can play 12 games, maybe. I wouldn't count on it, but maybe like, and this is why I come back to my stubbornness where I tell people, I don't like West Virginia. I think they built an entire season last year off beating really bad teams. And then they played a good team. They got smacked. You have K shoe and score fan Jimmy on on the your on boss was a lot. And he laid it out perfectly West Virginia played two teams in the top 35 last year and those two teams beat them both by at least retouched it. So I now you look at West Virginia schedule and you're like, geez, they're going to get challenged almost every night. Like it's it's night and day compared to last year so I'm low on West Virginia. You guys with me on this and and you probably won't either and that's okay. But I think people might be a year too early on Texas Tech last year and they could be a team that surprised people when I went game by game I ended up with them at six and three and I was like. Oh my, like, is this right? But you look at their schedule. They could start six and one very easily. And when you're six and one and you breed confidence, then you start to beat teams where people didn't think you were capable of. And yes, they have the worst quarterback luck probably going on two decades. But, you know, they had really bad quarterback luck last year entry and entry look at other positions outside of quarterback last year and people forget like Texas Tech schedule last year was so like. Like if I'm the coach, I'm like, I look at my ideas like what is this schedule they go to Wyoming. They play Oregon like it was a disaster and they come out of it and I know I know it counts as a bull went to but seven wins was I think pretty impressive given everything that they endured last year. So I kind of like Texas Tech and think that they're the team that could overachieve and there's one more team. I don't even like them. I think they suck. But you look at Cincinnati schedule. It's probably the easiest one in the B12. See, I've UCF is like my dark horse that I've been riding I'm a I'm a KJ Jefferson guy. I like Gus Melzon. They have a tougher schedule. But but but I do think I think if you tear things out I think I'm in lockstep with you where the tears come so Oh Cincinnati that I went back I was like I know they had an easy schedule. So they don't have to play Oklahoma State, KU Utah or Arizona. Now they have they have to go to Iowa State and K State, but that's like their toughest. So when I when I did the behind enemy line series, I believe the Cincinnati representative said hey bowl by boulder because it was, you know, they don't play any of those heavy hitters but it does get a lot better. But it does get a little bit dicey later on relative to their talent. Because if you like West Virginia, they play West Virginia after Colorado. They go to Ames. They they they go to Manhattan. They if you like TCU, they host TCU, but like you said, boom before Boulder. Yeah. That's one of the most played rivalry games in division one football by the way. Yeah, that's cool. And then they open up with Houston. Like they go to tech, which is probably tough. They go to UCF, which is probably tough, but they think Arizona State at home. Like they can get five wins before playing Colorado, like you said. So, like it's it's an adding. It's like imagine if like a like a K State or a Utah to play that schedule. Oh, it would be nice. Although, look, I can't complain about K State schedule. No, I can't, but they don't miss as many good teams as some other ones. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that that is true. But I don't want anything to do with UCF on the schedule. So I may be okay with the, but the only like consensus top five top 16, they miss as Utah, which I mean, that's a good one to miss. Yeah. No, I'm right there with you. All right. So we're recording this. Just, you know, taking the curtain back. We're recording this Monday evening. It is releasing on Thursday. When the when the depth chart came out, I wasn't really surprised by anything. But the one thing that's sticking out and you guys have done a great job covering this with the rise of Austin romaine and there was a lot of hype around. You know, earlier in blitz month, we had him as some folks having him as a candidate for defensive MVP. I was excited about the pickup. I remember you were excited about that pickup as well. But they have three guys. Listen at middle linebacker. He's not on there. No oars. I know he battled with injuries his entire career. Is this injury related or is it like, Hey, we're glad we brought him in because we were a little unsure in spring ball. So these three guys and specifically Austin romaine just ran away with this position battle. I think there's a good chunk of this that is injury related and he never bounced back and then he got back on the field and it had some more setbacks. I just, and I don't think he's ever had the chance to be on the field enough. I'm in camps over with now practice to really catch up, which is concerning to an extent. I'm not gonna lie. You would rather him be like not go through this right I'm not saying this is a blessing in disguise. I wouldn't view it as that. But I will say from everything that I have gathered. But nothing had happened. I still think Austin romaine to be the starter. And what a rise for that guy because I remember when he committed, I was like, I don't know. And then he played last year. And, and look, there were a couple rough moments but he flashed at times too. I mean, he was okay. Yeah, he was okay to solid early then probably hit that wall where he's used to play an eight to nine games and not 12 and. Yeah, I remember he also played two or three games I think with a club on his hand, right? I think so. I don't think he was healthy. That middle linebacker spot, you know, Daniel Green Clifton. And then he was playing with a club, you know, you got to give him credit for playing man. I mean, Steve standards probably ready to just be like, what the hell am I got to do to get like just a couple good months of good luck because, like you said, there's that. They had three season and injuries last year. You mentioned Daniel Green, which I think was week two against Missouri. Yeah. So that's the last game he plays. Jake Clifton. That's like what Midway, asa Newsom, I think was Midway. I mean, it was early, wasn't it? Oh, it might have been. It's hard to get his red shirt. It was like the first four games. Oh, yeah, he did keep his red shirt. So that's a good point. But I mean, there might have been four or five season any injuries on the team, but like 80% of them are in the line back. No, I'm right there with you. Speaking of the depth chart again, by the time folks listen to this, everyone's been able to digest it. Again, I was not really surprised, granted, I read and listened to just about everything K state. So again, I knew Damian Alalia was looking to be the starting nose guard. It did catch people off guard because I got a lot of questions about that. Well, again, people weren't sick. It was like me reading and listening to. Yeah. And I got to recalibrate like that. Like, like some people don't digest every word I say on a show or every word I write at it, you know, stuff like that. But like, and when I first heard it, yeah, it caught me by surprise too. But this was like what three, four weeks ago at this point where Mike to be awesome. So, but we get him in the internet interview room and he says, it wasn't, he wasn't even asked to do the depth. Art is just as Damian Alalia is the starter. I was like, okay. And, and some people are concerned about that because they, they, they think. And there's some truth to it. You know, odd front, you need this big bowl of a man, which is so technically with 330, 340 and Damian Alalia will never be that. But man, he also says, who's having the best practices of his career, who's almost the starter last year, if Damian Alalia can overcome those things to start. I mean, these really playing good football might be. No, I'm right there with you. Was there anything at all that kind of made you raise your eyebrow when that got sent out in the emails? You know, eyebrow raising is maybe a stretch too far. But that Andrew Leingen got on the or line at least with Taylor Portier. I think that was noteworthy because it's not like they did that with bestowing and guilty. So it was different ways of an approach there. So Leingen is really, really close, at least I would say. That's what that is a illustration of. The fact that both offensively and defensively, that they wanted to account for like every typical or every potential like formation or wrinkle, because you got, you know, what are they 13 offensive players 12 defensive players because they're like, but we're going to. And they've told us that we're going to play three defense events at times and it didn't sound like just maybe a sub package either. It's just like, we need to get these guys on the field. Offensively, it's like, we can go one tied in, we can go two tied in, we can go three tied in. So we got two tied in spots on the depth chart running back. They have two running back spots. I think that's more part of that. And I know he went with or with James why he puts like one is pure running back DJ Gins with Joe Jackson backing up. The other one is like freaking nature offensive weapon. Dylan Edwards, like kind of in a category of his own, how I view that. And obviously he's stuck with three wide receivers. So I didn't bother that like, yeah, nothing. Significant. I guess maybe how they grouped the defensive ends like who's with who and if you want to draw conclusions there. Because the hardest thing to really determine or quantify or project in terms of like snap counts and distributions right now is probably the defensive end room. It's like, hell, I don't know. Yeah, so it sounds like we're on a similar page. I saw some folks pushing back on how they did the depth trying to like, oh, they're just trying to get as many guys on there. They're just trying to make folks happy and maybe there's an extent to that. But when I saw that I was like, okay, they know that the running back position that Dylan Edwards is playing is not necessarily the same that DJ Gins is playing. And hey, we have these three distinct ways we want our defensive ends playing. And this is how we group those guys and hey, we know we're going to have some tight ends that are going to act a little bit more like big wide receivers and some that are going to be a little bit more like traditional tight ends. That was my immediate takeaway. Was there any part of you that's like, hey, we just want to get a lot of these guys were trying to show them love or what was your mind like, oh, this is them telling us. Yes, they're all tight ends, but these are two different spots. Yes, there are running backs, but these are two different types of running backs. Yeah, and you got to cover. Oh, excuse me, different office coordinators there with a different approach to how they probably want this proceed going from calling blind to Connor Riley and Matt Wells. Yeah, I think it was just more detailed. I mean, hey, if they want to be more attention to detail when it comes to the depth parts that they give us, we shouldn't complain about that. Like it gives us a little bit more of a, like I said, a peek behind the curtain. I don't, and I don't see it. If they wanted to like not hurt feelings, they would have put you freshmen on it. That's how I see it. Do you see any true freshmen on it's on rich with you? Yeah, I mean, here's the thing. They're typically at least one or two for that initial depth chart. I think that's a lot about that 2023 class in the 2022 class because there are one is the red shirt freshman sophomore. So that would be the 2023 class. There are so many of those that that class is loaded. I would like there is so many sure things that are popping through that class. It's not even funny. Like that. Like I wrote about it and I got it like fresh right here, that class alone. Just go through it. And that counts because you just got him in as a transfer. You count Dylan Edwards in that class. I think that's a lot of the things that I think that's a lot of the things that I think that's a lot of things that I think that's a lot of things that are going to be happening. Yeah, and again, if you start projecting out beyond 2025 to 2026, you're thinking to yourself, okay, Avery might, you know, go pro and all that type of stuff, but man, there's going to still be a lot of talent that could be sticking around to help us or in whether it is Jacob Knuth, whether it is Blake Barnett, whether, you know, whoever that next guy might be. I don't, again, K-State state's not like Georgia. It's not Ohio State. It's not. Hey, we reload and we're going to be contenders. But I think that they have been developing and recruiting at a level that they're going to be a gear in and they're going to go in all that type of stuff. But man, there's going to still be a lot of talent that could be sticking around to help usher in whether it is Jacob Knuth, whether it is Blake Barnett, whether, you know, whoever that next guy might be. They've been developing and recruiting at a level that they're going to be a gear in, year out, Arlington contender. And we shouldn't be seeing these big drop offs. And again, the lowest win total, if you throw out COVID, which that season doesn't count for anything. Chris comments never won less than eight games in the season. Yeah. And, and one of my partners on a three mall show, he loves this thing. And, and, I mean, it makes sense to, but he's like, throughout the COVID season, he says that almost every show, like, he will do stats and he will literally look at that season or go through like the last 10 years in 2020 does not count. So, yeah, Colin and I are on the same page for that one. Well, yeah, especially since you get that 45 zero host Iowa State, throw that out to throw that out. It's true to. Well, and then once in a generation blizzard, throw that out there like, who cares about that. Oh yeah, but then we got the 10 nine when we're Xavier Hutchinson's probably shaving points. Yeah, but I mean, like Malik Knowles gets what stripped at the one yard line. I mean, I think, but I, but if you told me Xavier Hutchinson was shaving points that game. I would like. Maybe, maybe. All right, Blitz month predictions. A lot of folks are trying to get cute with this one. I'll ask a follow up so you can mention the second person no matter what, but who's going to be the offensive MVP. Yeah, I mean, we had, we kind of got through these we had superlatives on KSO or I kind of quizzed Mason and, and Drew and I, I, I did not get cute. I went and Avery Johnson, like if, if can't the state is what we think they are. They were johnted is what we think he is. And the quarterback position is as important as we say it is like there is no other answer. No, I'm right there with you. And again, I make, I make reference to all this. And I tell everyone, Hey, you know, next year, if we're doing Blitz month. Probably won't get the option to say Avery Johnson, because in the past I've been like, you know, when it was deuce Vaughn coming into his junior year I said, all right, you can't say deuce. Last year I said, you can't say Will Howard. So next year, if Avery has a season, we hope people aren't going to get to say Avery. So I'm glad you got on the record there. I mean, if you give, if you allow Avery Johnson to be a selection, you're like, no offense to everyone that's been on the show that did not pick him, but you're out of your mind. Like, it's a quarterback that talented and with the weapons that he's really been surrounded with, inexperienced or not, like you are being very, very cute to go a different route, especially when none of the wide receivers have necessarily proved it for a full season. Dylan Edwards says not proved it for a full season as much as I love the kid and what he could do in the case the offense, the only other argument as DJ get ins, but even he is still reliant on every Johnson to be good. All right, so if we're sitting here, you know, everyone's heading down to Arlington, Texas, who are fans going to be talking amongst themselves and say, Hey, Avery had a great season, but this guy on offense might have been the number two guy. It's immediately kind of mine. I bet you got a lot of J. Brown. That's what I'm guessing. We got some J. Brown, but I think the best wide receiver on the team is going to be Keaton Johnson. And I think that and everything that I've been presented with and I know you could be setting yourself up for failures because we had this last year and it kind of didn't go anywhere near where we thought it was going to go. But like some kids have bad luck, and this is about the turn, I think. And as well as he is matured, I think sometimes maturity can also present itself and being able to take better care of your body, being able to prepare for week to week, the grind and knowing what it takes to just make yourself available and durable. I think he's got to that point. I also think he's matured enough mentally, where he is strong enough upstairs to go through any adversity that might be thrown his way. So, because I think he's gone through physical adversity. I think he's gone through mental adversity. I think he's matured enough to where he knows how to take care of his body to take care of the physical adversity. And he's just grown up into an adult to be able to take care of the mental adversity. I'm a big fan of Keegan Johnson. I think he's the most talented guy in the room. And I think we see that this year. So that's the one I initially want to go with. But boy, Dylan Edwards operates at a different speed that I don't think there's enough that there's. This is going to sound me like talking down on the big 12, but let's be honest, there's a few guys in a big timbre like those guys can really freakin with it. Whether, but they're usually on three or four teams. I get it Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, USC Penn State, and then SEC is what probably got six or seven those teams are like, they got dudes they can run with Dylan Edwards. Like the Zocal mistake in Utah. They're the most talented teams aside from Kansas State. Do they got dudes that can run with Dylan Edwards. And they're the most talented teams along with Kansas State. I don't think so. Like he plays it. I think I read the best way that I've ever like described it or written it in the last month was he's playing a different football game than everybody else. I'll tell you this, if Keegan Johnson performs at the level that I'm not saying you're hyping up, but if he lives up to, you know, everything that we're hearing if he has that maturity if he stays healthy if he plays up to that level. And if J Brown just even takes what he was able to do last year and projected across a full season because he was getting a snap here there for the first half of the season. I know what we're going to get out of DJ. And I, part of that, part of that for Jason was nobody knew him yet. So, that is true. Yeah, that is true. But I know what we're going to get out of DJ. And then again, you know, you saw it last year, versus TCU and in moments for Dylan Edwards. Their ability was his issue too. And again, like, well, not only that, but but again, I think some folks and again, I think people who maybe are just on the outside looking in the casual case state fan. They're probably like, Oh, yeah, Dylan Edwards. I remember watching him versus TCU before I went out to the case date opener last year. And they might be thinking, Oh, yeah, he's, he's not an every down back, maybe he'll get there. Maybe next year, but I think I don't mean this in a bad way. I think he's going to be a gadget type player who's getting, you know, between seven to 15 touches a game depending on the game. I still think DJ is your workhorse. I still think DJ is going to be a thousand plus yard rusher. Probably not three, four hundred yards receiving like we saw the last two years but maybe 200 yards receiving. But I think Dylan Edwards, he might be around a thousand yards from scrimmage, but they're all going to be highlights. Yep. I would. I agree. I think Dylan Edwards gets a thousand yards and I think he has two special team touchdowns. So again, I did my, I did my predictions episode. I said he's getting at least one special team touchdown right at a thousand yards from scrimmage, maybe a smidge under and I think I said six total touchdowns, which might be under selling it but I think he's going to be electric and I, I'm really excited to see how the electric's perfect way to put it. And to be honest, and those types of numbers are going to put them in the neighborhood and maybe a quarterback gets this because a quarterback will have numbers but newcomer of the year in the big 12, like, you definitely could definitely But now I assume there's a newcomer big 12 quarterback that might end up getting it but maybe but the quant fin, maybe a Baylor, maybe we'll start that we'll start the campaign after his first big game. Because I, like I didn't even say this like Baylor is another one of those teams could win win two win eight because like I don't know what any of us think what will happen with the other like transformation, if it's literally like upended everything that they've done. But the quant fin is a chance, really good. That was a really good word for a Mac team. But if that translates at all. He got something. I mean, Adrian Martinez was a very good quarterback at a glorified Mac team and he had a pretty good start to the season before the injury bug bit. I like calling Nebraska glorified Mac team. Exactly. You know where my head's at. We'll go to the defensive MVP. I think this is the this or the very, very final questions, the one that we've had the most. There's probably a wide array of answers here because I have this on ours too. And like I felt like I could pick seven or eight. I like I literally did. I didn't think I could take anyone on the defensive line that I think about it. But but I think you can take Desmond Purnell's a good answer. He's who I want with. To be honest, I'll just put it this way. You can pick Desmond Purnell or any defensive back. I think that's what you could do. Well, I'm going to make you choose one because I do take record of all these. Yeah. Well, I'm going. I'll pick one. But I'm just saying, I think all like it. I think any defensive back on this team that starts. Could be the defense of MVP. I want with it even the back. I want Jacob Parrish, like because I think like that dude is a play. You know, a chunk is a true freshman. They've just loved them and loved them and loved them. I mean, even through getting up some explosive last year, they just love them and love them and love them. And I just think now he's 200 pounds. Maybe those stop. Maybe everything comes together. Yeah, I don't know. It's a gut feeling a little bit, but just they know DBs and year after year, like they don't give up on that kid and they were on them. They weren't so bad as a recruit when they saw him in camp. It's hard for it. Like some of that stuff is hard for me to walk away from. I like the Desmond Purnell thing. I like that quite a bit too. And to be honest, Marquis Segal might be, I mean, he might be the best player on the defense. So that that makes sense. Maybe Keating Garber, because he has a high ceiling. So I'm going to watch out for. And, and to be honest, everything I, I've said about Keating Garber, you could say about Vijay Payne and that dude started Gaines as a freshman, true freshman to. And despite being next to Marquis Segal and Jordan Riley to very grown ass men. Vijay Payne has more power for starts than any of us. So, so I like Vijay Payne is an answer to, but I won't take a parish. I love it. All right. Who's going to be the newcomer of the year? Again, we talked at the top of this episode. It's true freshman or transfer. No one's gone true freshman, probably no reason to go true freshman. No, no, it's, it's, if you're going to let transfers and newcomers to go, it's Dylan Edwards and, and it's probably not close. You'd be silly to go. He's not even been the most popular pick. Well, that's what I will say is that's, I don't want to say dumb, but lots of lots of Jordan Riley. I'm worried at both state. Chirp Chirp Jersey right now because of Jordan Riley. He is one of my favorites. He's going to potentially be the favorite favorite because that dude is as charismatic as it gets you watch all the K state social videos where they're like at the prompts when they're walking out of the indoor facility and they're talking like he is a funny guy, engaging, so mature. One of my favorite probably might be my favorite interview on a team right now. I think he's going to be a friggin stud. And he said, he's, he's probably should be second. But Dylan Edwards, look, I get it because they could be like this. Jordan Riley is going to start Dylan Edwards is not, I might be all people think, but Dylan Edwards is going to play star steps. See, I went with Kilti because I'm a believer in him. I think when it's all. I didn't think about that. Yeah. Yeah, that's a good one. Well, I'm a big guy. So I'm always looking. I'm always looking at the start and left tackle. That's a very important position. I've also said the someone asked me. I think I did this as a prompt. I can throw some of our sprouts is out and see if the ones that you don't have and see what you pick. I think I said, I think I asked for an X factor on each side of the ball. And for offense, I think I went off it's a line because at the offensive line is good. Oh, it's over. Yeah. If they're good, it's over. Who's going to be the breakout player of the year? So returning players yet to make a big impact. Yeah. You said returning players. So it can't be Dylan Edwards because we did this and I got to pick Dylan Edwards. Yeah. No, so. And Drew cheated more than me. Oh, I, I, I let my opinions know with the Drew. Because I think he also picked Keegan Johnson for offense as well. And again, he may not have lived up to the hype, but I mean, he was like a full-time starter when he was healthy. So, yeah. Well, he started, at least he probably started seven games. Yeah. So I agree. So yeah, breakout, but it's, but it is returning because I have newcomer and then break out because it used to be just one big hodgepodge. I've changed it around this year. So who's going to be a breakout player returning player? Yeah. No, I like it. I would think maybe a popular answer is what Trey Spivey is potentially up there, but I don't know if he's, I don't know if he's been picked yet. But I just don't know how much, I know they want to use those other wide receivers, but I just don't know how much. So I can't get there. Garrett Oakley is probably pretty popular because, you know, he's going to get a chance to play a lot more. I just don't, I don't know if I'm quite there yet on him either. But Kilti wasn't here. So, like, that's another one not returning. And then, hands are, he's, he's established. I think Carver Willis is pretty much established till the party is established. Carver Willis played set, like started seven or eight games last year, so he wouldn't qualify. Travis Bates wasn't here. So one of those young divots events is probably a pretty common pick. See, I'm just working through this. People can see my work. So those red shirt freshmen defensive ends. I think I'm not going to pick them, though. Okay. So you're not going with Jordan Allen, Ryan Davis, or cheaty OBA or because those are like, not as much Davis until late. He's served on late. Sorry. If I had to pick one, it would be Davis. Unless, actually, I would pick Davis or Toby. What would cheaty, so now you're making me feel dumb. That cheaty, cheaty, I think is someone that got the big head start. And now I was coming back to the pack a little bit and not, yeah, not not that you should anyone should be discouraged on him. But he's probably not have, he doesn't have the same steam Austin remains a good pick, although he probably played enough last year where it's tough to pick him to, according to your definition. Just how much he was forced into playing time on his own undoing. A some might be a popular pick, but again, he's going to be the bag. How much is he actually going to play the two corners? You can't take to be honest. You can't take any of the safeties. You know, I would take Andrew Langen. See, I was wondering if you're going to get back there because he was my number two. No, I knew I was waiting for him. I remember what we got his recruitment. I've been waiting for line gang, man. I knew, you know, selfish mission here. I knew I was going to get back to line gang. He was going to be my answer for this all along. But I wanted to get through the whole roster and be like, Oh, this guy, you know, this guy's good, this guy's good. You're a showman Derek. You're a little bit like Toby. Like a little bit of Toby because I think there's a chance it leads team in sacks. So Toby is up there for me. Andrew Langen, because I think I think he's going to be the starter at some point. I don't know when I think it's. Well, I was very excited when we got his commitment. I would love to see him take off it. I would have the Bismarck North Dakota watches us. I drove all the way to Bismarck North Dakota during COVID. Really? Wait, why was Toby? Oh, no, no, you're, you're talking about Andrew Langen for a second. I thought you went back to Toby. I was like, why the hell was Toby up? Toby's never seen North Dakota in his life. Hopefully he never has to. All right. My favorite question to ask, and there's been a handful of different answers for this one. But it's my favorite. What is the pendulum game for you this year? Yeah. I, you sent that outline and I briefly went over it and I typically don't. So, as John, like, I don't, it's more of an arrogance out of myself because I'm like, I know everything. It's fairness to you. You do know a lot. So, but, but that one was the one that stumped me a little bit because I don't, I don't know that there's a clear pendulum game this year when they're typically is. There's, there's obvious trap games. I mean, you have both talked about them, but pendulum game, like, in the way that you defined it, like it has to be a somewhat consequential game. But it also has to be one that can, like, kill your season or maybe not kill your season or like, you know, catapult your season. It's going to catapult your, it's going to put you in a hole. That basically rules the Iowa State game. Because it's the last game of the year. Yeah. That, that, that is tough where the Iowa State game is. And I think maybe some folks have said Iowa State because they're saying, like, hey, that could decide if you're going to Arlington. You're either going to Arlington or you're going to, you know, right, but that doesn't mean a season to disaster, which is kind of what you defined it as. So that's why I got to take out Iowa State. And the three games before that are not near consequential enough to qualify it, like Cincinnati, Arizona State and Houston, like, that's not there. And BYU and West Virginia, I see as trap games, but not necessarily that fit your, again, that fit your definition. Now, if you want to go 12 and 0, like Arizona could count even as early as it is. Like, if you like, you know what I mean, that could, that could really screw it up quick. Yeah, I, I never put that much weight in the noncon. So that's what I'm saying. Like, because it doesn't hurt your ability to want to make 12 and you can still go to the playoff with losing to Arizona. So again, that's one I couldn't pick. And again, BYU and West Virginia, tough ask games that I would consider the traps. But like, are, do they have the ability to sink your season? No, because you can go 11 and one and lose it West Virginia, right? Like, that, and that's what I think is the most likely on this freaking schedule. So it comes down to Oklahoma State and KU because, like, if you don't make the big 12 title game because you lost the home to KU, your fans hate you. If you, if you, I don't know, almost any scenario where you lose a home to KU, your fans are going to hate you. Like, that one, like, you have to win the big 12 if you lose to KU. Even you know it. You know the message board. We can, the confetti could be falling from the ceiling in AT&T stadium. You're going to have a small, like 3% segment of the fan base saying, I still would have preferred to beat KU. You will. And then I don't know if you can. The way that I've configured the schedule myself, I don't know that if it is possible, you can sink your chances to get to Arlington by losing to Oklahoma State because of time breakers scenario. See, that's why I went with Oklahoma State. Because you lose that. You're chasing ghosts all October, November. Yeah, because Oklahoma State could pull it off, right? And Utah can pull it off because you don't get a shot at Utah. And you're stuck chasing ghosts. Like you said, Oklahoma State and Utah, because you can't do anything about it. And that's why that's probably the best answer. If you take the hatred portion out of this, because, like, and I know people hate this and I don't think this team's any good. I've already said this on this podcast. But like winning a Morgantown this year is going to be a frickin hassle. I predicted it. I think most of us are. Like, that game couldn't be worse placed on the schedule. Oh, and not only that, I can see it. KU gets off to a hot start. You know, K States in the top 10 and all the talk of, Oh, is big noon going to come as game day going to come. And then you end up losing, you know, 31 to 17 and more. And the nature of coming off that Colorado game and the nature of what the Colorado, like the Colorado could be like dog shit and the nature of that game and what it means to the kids because Colorado is so viral. Like, right. Like, so you're in with the solid verbal guys. I always forget their name, Dan Rubenstein and Ty Hildebrand. I think they call it the letdown look at sandwich that that is perfectly what that is. It 100% is. So I think you've referenced it a couple of times. What do you end up having case it's regular season 12 game record bang. I'm drinking a Kool-Aid this year, even though there are some things that scare me about this team that I want that I probably need to be assured of in the first three or four weeks, but I got it 11 and one losing it was Virginia. So, Kellis Robinette, the only person to pick less than 10 wins. He went with nine and three. So, Kellis always DMS me and says, all right, am I still the low man. Yes, Kellis, you are ending low on the totem pole. All right, you've also kind of referenced it three horse race, K state Utah Oklahoma say I think you've shown your cards. It sounds like you have a rematch between Gundy and climbing down in Arlington. I do. It's tough to beat a team twice. So I got the folks. See, I said we do beat them twice. I had the exact same. Okay, exact same. I had 11 and one losing at West Virginia fans being bummed because it may be costs more of a national spotlight versus KU, but you still win that one. And I have I will say twice. I will say because we don't know what a committee treats how a committee treats conference championship users. We have no idea. Because because it's not fair to to penalize this conference champion losers because they got more skin to the game than a team that doesn't make the conference title game that they finished ahead of like right. So, yeah, I'm not I'm not saying to bank on this because it's going to be a very controversial, but a 11 and one K state team that loses to Oklahoma State in the big 12 title game team that they already beat. In my opinion, but I would I am. And so would you laid out since you have West Virginia's loss, like can't say 11 and one losing to Oklahoma State big 12 title game. I would not put money on them to make the playoff, but I don't I think it's a non zero chance they still make this one. Yeah, so here's my take and I've said this on your message board. I've said it on Twitter. I've said on this podcast. I don't give a shit really about the playoff because I don't see K state being in a position to win a national title. I want to win the big 12. That's my ultimate prize. Would it be fun to in this scenario. Go on the road to like Eugene or Austin for a playoff. When I put that 12 team playoff together would have been Eugene. Yeah, so I mean, would that be fun. Yeah, it would be cool. But I mean, it just really it doesn't do anything for me if the playoff begins. Hey, beat beat Oklahoma State win the big 12. That's what I'm pumped up about. And yes, it'd be cool. I someone in the Fiesta Bowl and feel like you're part of it. Yeah, but I it just it just doesn't do it for me, man. I'll talk about it. It's going to get the clicks. I will be a whore for the clicks. I will have bracketology episodes. I will do it. But I'm not going to like doing it. What I would say and the only thing about the playoff that I would say is if you get to host a playoff game, it's pretty freaking cool. But Kansas State's basically in a position where that's never going to happen. Never going to. I would like a like a note because because I don't think it's taken when in actual championship, like the 12 team called football playoff. And there's people like I know their eyes are rolling the back of their hands when they hear me say it because but because of that. I don't care about a bye. I'd rather play a home game than a bye. I do care because it means you won the big 12. You brought home the biggest. But I'm saying it's like if I wish you could almost pick it. Yeah. Like you would like, Oh, I would much rather not it like it be on campus versus a neutral site. Yeah, I'd rather have a home game in that week as a big 12 champion then getting a bye week and then going. I'll say this. When it goes to 16, they're not going to do seating by championship. So when it expands the 16 when this current deals done, they will get rid of. I think automatic qualifiers and even if automatic qualifiers are still around, you're not going to get a top four seed for being a top four conference champion. But what I'm because the reason why I'm kind of saying this, what I just did to one, it's awesome to kind of have that meaningful game in the room campus like the hype and whatever. But I think that's also the only one of the only scenarios where you're going to have some potential upsets like, like do I, I upset is whatever because it's 567 and eight or the home team is the favorite technically I get it. If like a Georgia's nine to 12, and there's a world where it could be like if they got to go on the road that's tough. It's a lot tougher. It'll be great TV but man, I still love bowl games but whatever people don't need to listen to me talk about this also bizarre. It'll be bizarre to me that you can win like the Rose Bowl and the cotton ball in the same year. That is dumb. That is done. Honestly, if I, if I was the czar of college football, which is something I throw out there. I wouldn't have that I would have it go like okay hey, if the Bulls are part of it. Here's the bowl games. Then after that neutral site bid them out like okay. Maybe you're playing in Arlington, but the cotton bowl trophy is already been presented. Hey, maybe Pasadena wants a quarter final or semi final game. I guess it'd be semi final game not quarter fun. Hey, they might want to sell my final game but that's not the Rose Bowl. That's already happened, you know, and then help. Let's play. Let's play one in Nashville. Let's play one in Orlando if they want. You know, I think that they should bid the semi finals out under the current system. Just like they do the national championship site. But again, I'm not the czar of college football. If it was, we would go back to the BCS. So, final question. This is the one where we've had all the variation. We got about three fourths of the way through before we had a repeat answer. As long as I've been doing this podcast, there's been at least one big major out of left field job shake up that has caught folks by surprise every single year. What's that job going to be this year? Is this the first time you've asked it? Has anyone nailed it before? No, this is the first time so shout out to your employee drew he's the one who gave me inspiration for this question at least I'm 99% sure is drew he'll listen and he'll tell me if I'm right or wrong. I always do a I always do a different question like back in 2020 I asked okay how many of these 10 games are we actually going to play John Kurtz said zero for the record. So, of course I did. And then I think in 2021 I said that's when conference here live and shit was going down I think I said, okay, what conference is case it going to be playing in and people were either saying like mountain west or a bastard I had this version of the big 12 or the pack and then 2022. Okay, well I could probably go back and listen. I can't remember what the 2021 was last year was which new teams going to get to Arlington first but halfway through blitz month it's like oh, we're getting the four corner schools. So I think I maybe asked in 2022 who would you like to add because it was before. So I always end with something that's college football adjacent but not necessarily case state. So, Rob, I'm going to guess I probably want BYU just because I thought UCF at the best long term future but it would take some time and be why you can get there sooner. I would pick that now UCF is already a head of BYU and so BYU I think is going to have to basically start a liver and fire the coach. So do obviously now also you're re answering all of it. I was just kind of like relitigating it a little bit. Now you would pick you tall right you'd be silly not to. Yeah, it will so so when I was asking the question last year, it started like I said the first like five it was before we added those four and then once Utah came in everyone's like oh it's going to be Utah. Every single person after the like the announcement of those four schools coming. Yeah, it's it's Utah because no one's got there yet it was local mistake and what Texas last year so I would say Utah is and it is probably your pick that's when you said last year so yeah it's I mean it's not going to be Arizona state. It's not going to be Colorado. It's probably it shouldn't be Arizona but I mean maybe they're the dark horse for this answer. Yeah, so what if they don't win it this year, then maybe that'll put it up for UCF because that smells on and strikes me as a guy that'll cut until he's 80. I think I said just make it not even win so. I'll go back and listen to the episode and DM you and if we're and if me and you are right it can't stay local with state this year and we hear him does retire, then I'm not picking you tall. I'm picking UCF but but keep in mind. There wasn't retirement rumors when when oh Utah's coming and then like the retirement rumors start halfway through last year so okay yeah and then crazy coaching stuff. I saw this and two things came to my mind and I don't know that anyone will have said this already I'm the last one so I'm kind of guilty and maybe duplicating like I don't expect this one to happen. So let's say OU is as bad as I'm hoping they are and think they could be that'd be the third time that they've been the culprit and they just gave Venables an extension that right right so they were so funny. They would probably stick with Venables but what if they go five and seven or six and six which I think is on the table. Do they fire him probably not but man it would be funny if they did but what if they did. And when got hypo from Tennessee. Now that would be fun that would be fun. There's probably a non zero chance there right that's oh no I think I legitimately think like. Look at Tennessee long established like SCC program all that type stuff I would much rather be in Norman. I would much rather be in Norman and again that's home oh that would be that might I mean there's been some fun scenarios that people have played out but that would be that I got one more and I'm sure this one's already played out. But like stick with me here. I think it's boomer bust like in Columbus right. I mean I'm sure this one's been said it's been popular if Ryan Day does good enough. He might just find his NFL parachute because he's like this pressure cooker sucks. He's like I had to win the national championship or die this year basically or he's bad enough and they run him out of town. So like I think Ohio State in some shape or form that job has a very above 10% chance of being up. The same scenario is they go nine and three losing to Oregon Michigan again and some random team. They still get into the playoff. They win a playoff game but they still fire him anyways. You probably saw my big 10 like based on playoff scenario because you because I know you liked my post like a so when I was asked. And I took Penn State as the third seed in the big in the in the college football playoff. Because what I've already said I'm not going to take a new team and a new lead to win the conference. So I'm not going to take Oregon Michigan. I don't like to take first year head coaches. I didn't tire state Ohio State. I don't trust a quarterback. So I'm like Penn State could be like his weird default winner. So I so I didn't have Penn State winning. So I had so I went through it in again. I don't like but everyone does the playoff prediction. So I don't like Penn State but there's a like there's an obvious reason to dislike every single one of those good pen big 10 teams. No I'm right there with you. I ended up having Penn State as my eight seat. So I had Georgia as my one. I did have Oregon winning it. I think they bucked that trend. I'd cake stayed as a three seed. I had Miami winning in the ACC which that could be anyone. I don't know. And I and I know we're jumping to conclusions but if like the floor states even close to that the whole year they're not making the play off now. And I think and I think yeah maybe that opens it up for like these dark horses that people are liking to pick right now between Virginia Tech or NC State Louisville. But I think it's Miami or Clemson. Yeah, I got Miami and truthfully I think I had Florida State in there like I did two months ago but no, no. No Miami or I think Miami and Clemson have a lot to like about where they stand right now. But as Miami fan I would just like he ate like having to go through this game because Mario Chris balls one of the worst thinking coaches in college football. He really is. I had your Ohio State Buckeyes at the five seed. Texas has my six seed Alabama is my seven Penn State is my eight. I had so I had Ohio or Oklahoma State going 11 and two only two losses a case state I gave them the nine seed. Do I actually think that's going to happen. No, but I did it anyways and then I had Ole Miss LSU and originally I was trying to be cute with my G5 and I'm like app state but as it was coming out of my mouth I was like no that's not going to happen and I switched it to Boise State. I just found my so I went one Georgia and I know you've seen this two Clemson three Penn State for Oklahoma State because those are my conference champions five Ole Miss. They have a really nice SEC sketch actually. So and I do think the improved in the trenches. Not good enough to win like an SEC Championship game but good to be like one of those next teams. Six Oregon. Yeah, six Oregon and seven Texas eight Tennessee. I Tennessee actually, but I just think you're also like Ole Miss. I haven't been there enough in these nights and moments to take them higher nine Miami 10 Ohio State. I don't like him as much as you do. I took 11 case state like that because of my scenario like they could be that 10 or 11 seed if the committee is so basically what Jean Taylor said that the committee would be at big 12 media days in 12. My my group of live. I took Texas State. I think they were really humming at the end of last season and they got a schedule that could get them respect early. No, that that would be a fun one. So we'll see. It's going to be a year unlike any other. And again, I said this on your message board and I kind of pissed some folks off because I was like, because I said, look, everyone's trying to look at different years and how the committee ranked teams. They're trying to put it towards this year and look, everything is out the window because they were doing courtesy stuff. You know, from five to 12 because they knew ultimately they're going to a new year six bowl game and it doesn't really matter. I think that I think everyone's worst fears are going to come to fruition. I think it could be five or six SEC teams. I think you're going to see three or four big 10 teams and you could see the ACC and big 12 with just one. But that's why I'm not worried about it. I want to win the big 12 championship. And then if we don't if we're if case state is sitting at 11 and two and going to San Antonio to whip the hell out of USC, then that's going to be fine by me. Give me a top 15 final AP poll ranking and another win over USC. I'm going to sleep great all January, but that's just me. And I have. Yeah, to be honest, and it might be more fun playing an actual world game than just like a first round playoff game on the road, especially. But unless you, unless you're so good. Like if we're silly and can't say to so good and that other team is beatable and can't say you want to play. Yeah, go win the fucking thing, but. Well, especially if you win that on the road. I mean, like if you go to Eugene and beat. Oh, that would be hilarious. Right. And then you're playing. To be honest, you know what happens after that, then what you're playing Penn State. Oh, I mean, sign me up for that. I mean, I would rather play Penn State than Oregon like pessimistic. We just sounded like if you weren't able. So we're silly. You probably do roll the dice and see if you can win at Oregon. Like I know the album. Yes. Like if we're being honest, like it. Like, yes, if you're running into my head and say, Scott, you want to go play off for the album. We're just afraid of what the more likely outcome is. But there is, but kid's state, can they go and beat Oregon? Yeah, I mean, probably they. Their quarterback is Dylan Gabriel. Yeah, they beat him before. They beat Dylan Gabriel. Yeah. Yeah. We beat him in Gabriel. And then if you win that, you play Penn State. Drew Alar, like, Dylan Gabriel is better than Drew Alar. Andy Cohen, Becky. Never beat K state. No, never beat K state. So like, yeah, you want to, you, you can look at it in that lens. It's a very purple lens, but like, yeah, we're going to roll the dice and let's ignore who we might have to face in the semi-five. But if we didn't get that chance and we had to go to see Antonio and play USC, then we can be good with that. Definitely. All right. Well, Derek, I think this ended up being the longest Blitzmount episode, which is good. It's at the end. This is the way it should be.
