And it's hitting the air to left field and deep. Grow far is going back, still going back. At the wall, it's going to go. A grand slam for Parker Meadows. And the Tigers go in front. It's 4 to 3. Yeah, yeah, that really happened last night at Petco Park, our man Jesse Adler. Giving us all the bad news, the Tigers rallied to beat the Padres 4-3. Welcome into Gwen and Chris, everybody. It's finally a Friday. We're glad about that. And it's a Friar Friday at that. Alec Jacob, the Padres reliever, will be joining us here shortly. As the Padres will try to shake off that loss last night to Detroit, stunning as it was. Chrisllo and Scrabie, we're here at the Odyssey Palace students, of course, Tony Gwen Jr.'s down there at Petco Park, where the Padres will host the Giants tonight, starting a three-game series. And Tony, Scrabie, I'll just say both of you. I'm a pretty nice guy in general. I know you guys sometimes don't think so. But I have never, in my life, angered somebody to the point where they just hauled off and sucker punched me in the gut. So I don't know what it feels like. But I kind of have a feeling it might have been similar to how everybody felt last night when that ball left the yard. That was a tough one to take. And all the Padres can do now is get up and play again today. And that's the good thing about baseball. You get another chance. Yeah, that was a good punch, for sure. Yeah, it was. But the beautiful thing about this game is that the schedule keeps going. And we aren't in the playoffs where it was an elimination or anything like that. So the next game up is the Giants. And so you move on. Swars didn't have his best night last night. Quite frankly, the Padres offense. I got the three runs in the first two innings. And then nothing the rest of the way. That doesn't help matters. But that being said, you got a three-nothing lead. That's one that you feel like you should win. And yesterday, how that inning played out. Single walk, pop up, another walk, a punchy. And then give a medal some credit. Because oftentimes, you get in those situations, you see hitters just in general try to do more. He literally just tried to get the barrel to the baseball and let the 100 mile per hour do the rest of the work for him. And he got it in the air and got it about. They ended up winning that game. But no reason to feel any type of way. You turn the page. And I think that's certainly what the Padres would do today. Yeah, a few things. Obviously, Tony, when I saw ProFAR turn around and saw that number 10, my first thought was, oh, this is going to be trouble. And then it got more than that. And then, of course, he ran out of room. And yeah, it was a stunning blow, especially in a season that has really gone so much the Padres way. But can we just, even though we had a really bad night, and we know we did, and everybody knows, can we stop immediately before we even bring it up or anyone decides to tweet it out? Robert Suarez is the closer of the team. He didn't get the job done last night. He's not the first closer ever to give up a game-winning home run. He won't be the last. And I think if he gets the opportunity, whether it's tonight or tomorrow, I know he's pitched two or three days in a row, he's still the guy. And even if he's not the guy, the Padres still have Tanner Scott. They have Jason Adam. They're fine. But a lot of people are kind of overreacting. Well, you know, he throws too many fastballs. He's pitching too much. He's good doing it. None of which would have been said-- He's pitching too much. Right, none of which would have been said if Parker Meadows hit a fly ball to love field. But since he hit it over the fence, all of a sudden, Suarez can't get anybody out. And you know, this fastball repertoire has got to go. And you know, you can't pitch him back-to-back nights. And, oh, my, I read all this stuff today. And McKee says too late for that, Chris. Doomers are out in droves already, which is true. I got a lot of responses last night. No, I know how this team's done. That's why I'm addressing it right now. Wait, was that a real-- was that a real statement right there this team has done? It was-- they're going to start their losing streak now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, you know, I'm going to choose today-- I'm going to choose Grace today. Because what I would want to say to those who are in that category probably isn't very nice. So I'll just keep my mouth shut on this end. And just, you know, it is what it is. I mean, he didn't have a good day. Fair weather, idiots. Get off our show. Yeah, can we just-- Get off our show. Get off our show. That was the worst post-game guy, yeah. That's exactly how I'm feeling, to fill in those-- Exactly, Tony. Who are in the Doomville, right, at night after Suarez blows a save. Listen, Robert has been great all season long. And to be quite frank with you, I don't know that anybody expected him to be this good all year long. I mean, because prior to now, we only had had like half season of Suarez. In some cases, less than that, right? I think the first season, we got a half season. The next season, he was a little banged up until the second half, same thing last year. But he's been phenomenal. And, you know, he didn't have a good-- It's phenomenal. Yeah, he didn't have a good night last night. And, you know, Padre's going to gain the game on the Diamondbacks. That's the painful part, right there. That's the-- right, right, 100%. That's the painful part that you could have put a little ground there. But, you know, it's a ball game. This is the way it goes. Martin Perez could not really have been any better. Jason Adam came in, got out of the little jam that was created in the seventh inning. The only thing-- and I don't think this happened-- but the only thing that it felt like sitting at the game last night, Tony, a little, was that the Padre's-- maybe they almost needed a reminder here. But they got the 3-0 lead. And you kind of touched on it. Their offense went to bed after that. And maybe there was just a little, you know, sneaking in there that thought that, man, 3-0 with our bullpen-- this is ball game. We don't need any more runs. I'm not saying they didn't-- they stopped trying. So please don't get me. Take me wrong. But, you know, just a little reminder that it's always good to tack on a couple of runs here and there throughout the course of a game. You never know when you're going to need them. And so maybe that is what comes out of this game, you know? Because they really did very little after that early lead. Yeah, I don't know that they-- I don't know that anything comes out of this game. I don't think there's anything that they learned from this. Honestly, because when you-- it wasn't as though they had opportunities, and they blew well. Right, they didn't have them, yeah. I'm going through it, I mean-- No, they had nothing. That a double play to end the second inning, three guys came to the plate. You had four guys come to the plate in the third. You had three guys come to the plate in the fourth-- or, excuse me, I'm reading the wrong side. You got to go to the other side. The score to the first two innings. They went one, two, three in the third. They went one, two, three, four in the fourth. Same thing in the fifth. Same thing in the sixth. One, two, three in the seventh, one, two, three, and eight. So they didn't really have a ton of opportunity. They never got more than one run run base the whole game, actually. That's right. You know, Profar hit the solo home run, and Zander hit the two run homer. So they never really had a threat last time. They left four runners on base that entire game. So they didn't crab the opportunities. Listen, I mentioned it yesterday. Do you think what you want to think about Detroit as a team? Their pitching staff is pretty good. They showed that again last night. May's got off to a rough start. Then he settled in, and the Padres didn't do much. They're bullpen, Mayeta, Vinesco, and Holton, all came in through up zeros. That's what you design a bullpen to be able to do. The Padres really did that except for the last guy. And that's why I said it's worse just had a bad night. - Well, look, it's one of those things. Baseball is still, in my mind, the greatest game. I know that the NFL and all these other sports have closed the gap or surpassed. But there's one thing about baseball that still no other sport can claim. And that is, the clock never runs out in baseball. You've got to get all 27. And the team on the other side is still alive until that happens. And so, we get reminded of that last night. Obviously, the key thing is you don't let one loss turn into two or three. But I'm also not gonna sit here and say, "Oh, this is a must win tonight." They've got to win tonight. No, they don't have to win tonight. Obviously, it'd be nice. Get back right on the horse and win a couple. But this is how baseball works. And the Padres have been so good here for so long that I think this loss really caught a lot of people by surprise and everybody by surprise. Nobody saw that coming. - Yeah, I don't think anybody yet, including me, City Cup here. But I will say this, the Padres have earned the right for, I think at least, that we aren't counting like, all right, they gotta win this game today and this game tomorrow. They just gotta keep playing good baseball. And for, I would say, eight innings, they did that yesterday. - Yes, they did. - The ninth inning, they didn't do it as well. And I think for the Padres, moving forward, the one characteristic, and I mentioned this after the end of the game yesterday, characteristic that comes into play tonight. And I know it's been a while. You gotta kind of rewind yourselves back to the first half of the season. What were the thing that the Padres did very well? Was they'd have a loss like this, or they'd have multiple losses like this, three, four in a row. Always stopped the bleeding. Never did it like roll downhill from there. And so I just think that's an important one to keep in mind. This is what this team has done well. Just when you think, man, this could really spin out the wrong way. They get a nice win. And at the first half, it was like, they get as much wins as they could get in terms of getting just above 500. Then they might lose a couple. Now, they're almost, you know, 18 over. They gotta, I think that's the characteristic that I'm looking for here in tonight's game. - I have a question from the chat about why the Bunt wasn't reviewable last night. Mason McCoy. - Why wasn't it reviewable? - Yeah. - I mean, it's a fair foul call, first and foremost, and it's in front of the third base bag, it's not beyond it. So therefore, it is not reviewable. - I'm always confused, honestly. - I thought it was a fair ball. - What you can't review, what you can't review, but I understand why you can't review that. - I don't think it was a big play in the game. There was no big plays in the game where the Padres off. - I mean, I think they got the call wrong because his foot had never fully established. - In fair territory. - In fair territory. It was on its way to fair territory when it hit him. But again, it's not reviewable. So, let's see, non-reviewable plays in, out of Batter's box, specifically named on the list there. So. - There you go. Tony Gucci. - Thanks to my partner, Jesse Agler. - My God, you love Jesse Agler's the greatest. - He is. - He's the most unbelievable. He's our very own walking encyclopedia. - Encyclopedia. - If the internet ever breaks, we're fine, Tony, 'cause we got Jesse, who we can go to. Michael King will pitch tonight. Mason Black, right-hander. We'll go for San Francisco. Yeah, I was too bad at his Martine Perez. Man, was he good? - That's as good as these pitch right there. - Yeah, I mean, he was really almost unhittable until they finally maybe got a little tired in the seventh inning. So, you know, that was a good thing last night. I thought, pro far, you know, Jack and one in the first inning, that can't hurt, you know, as he tried to get him going again a little bit. Bogey had three hits last night. I mean, all of it's forgotten, of course, 'cause you lose the game. The other guy, you know, that I noticed last night was Elias Diaz made his debut. Tony, correct me if I'm wrong. He batted three times and he hit three absolute missiles. Only one of them went for a double. But the other two were hit hard. So, you know, he debuts and certainly didn't hurt the cause any last night. But, you know, that's crazy baseball. And I will say this, being at that game, Tony, I don't know if you sensed it. But even, this is how I think the Padres say, to me, the kind of, you know, feeling we have about their team, even after the Grand Slam, I still felt Padres might still come back. - Yeah, for sure. - You know, they were never at bat. You knew Jackson Merrill was gonna bat again. It was still a hope, you know, it didn't happen. But not many teams, you didn't even have the hope. - There was an element of if Jackson gets to play, he's gonna hit a homer. - I know. Well, when he came up, everybody bought that. - That's kind of where we are right now. - I know. - And it just rolled back from five down the other day. So, I mean, it's not like it was a far-fetched idea. It just, it was one of those days. It just didn't come together for him. But again, a sign, we're watching to see how they respond today. And I have no doubt they'll respond in the right way. - They will get up off the mat and take on the Giants at 6.40 this evening. We hang with you until about 5.30 or so ahead of Sam Levitt's Ecowater SoCal Padre pregame show. It's a fryer Friday, Alec Jacob out of the Padre bullpen. We'll be coming out of the pen to join us here in just a little bit. So we'll get things underway. Of course, we'll recap last night's thriller in the NFL. I mean, you know, it's only one game, but it was good. We'll talk about all that. Poway was gonna be in the mid-100s this weekend. - It was quite terrible. - So you better get down to the ballpark. - It was quite terrible. - That's really terrible. I saw in the paper today, for all of us that are, you know, tired of the heat here. Phoenix, it has been over 100 degrees in Phoenix. Get this, 102 days in a row. - Yeah, I saw that. - Yeah, so. - My daughter went down to Grand Canyon, which is in Phoenix, the University for a cruise trip. - Oh, Grand Canyon, right, yeah. - She said it was, I mean, my wife, my two daughters said it was boiling there, but I will say this, 107 in power today did not feel anywhere near what it felt like in '98 of St. Louis, or the 115 in Palm Springs, or it might have been more than that, it might have been like 117 in Palm Springs, or the heat that's in Arizona. It's a different type of heat, like this is like muggy, but I don't feel like I'm in an oven. Like I felt, you know, those other places I name, it feels like an oven. It's just hot, but it's like, I don't know. That's a week 107, I'll say that. - It's a week 107, if you're gonna bring a 107, you're gonna have to bring it a little harder. - And it just, it just also highlights why, you know, Southern Cali is still the best, is that even when we get crappy weather, it's still way more bearable than everybody else's is crappy weather. - I couldn't agree more, could not agree more with you two. - We are currently waiting to hear from Alec Jacob, Padre Reliever coming on, if you don't recognize the name at this point, the sidearm slanger that the Padre's will have brought in from time to time, he's helped out. And, you know, it's just, I mean, if you're adding that Padre bullpen, you're probably pretty good. He struck out 14, walked one. I think that's a good ratio for a young guy. - Pretty pretty, pretty good. - Pretty good, pretty good. - I want to say it in 171 on him. So, we're waiting on him a little bit. - Sure, we need to hear from him. - We can do that. - What did you think about the football game yesterday? I know how it ended. - Yeah. - It was fun to have football back on. - I'll tell you these guys. It was distracting during the game 'cause it definitely was like in a spot in this room where I can see both or I can like do what I'm doing right now. - I can't believe Dave Marcus actually keeps a TV within your view to throw you off while you're trying to broadcast the game. - I'm just thankful, I'm just thankful that Dave Marcus isn't like solely baseball. 'Cause, you know, they would be dudes who wouldn't, who would refuse to put it up. - I would be the guy. - He is not like that. He is a sportsman. - Well, he's like that because he wants to do what? You know what, he's not a sportsman at all. - Oh wow, here we go. - Oh no, this is a very selfish thing that he's doing. He puts the football game up there, why? Because he himself wants to watch the football game. He's not putting it up there for Tony and Jesse's enjoyment. - Trust me, if UCLA had been playing at the same time, that game would not have been on the team. - Exactly, he's not putting it up there for you guys. He's putting it up because he likes to watch that stuff. I think, you know, honestly, I'd probably be a little more of a good stop at Tony. If I was the producer there, I think I'd want my broadcasters focused on the game at hand. Don't know that I would have a TV. - You and I would definitely butt heads in it. If you're gonna be the- - No, we wouldn't do that. - Yeah, how could Chris ever say that when he's the guy who's constantly doing mock drafts on his computer watching top show during the show on his computer, I'm like sitting over here. Hey, do you guys think that it hurts a little slow today? - Well, maybe you shouldn't be watching hockey over here. - Watching the black eye. And my voice is just, you do it so well. - That was better than ever. - Yeah, it was better than ever. What are you comparing it to, your last 300-- - You bet Chris sound like he was one of the managers out of the '80s that just smoked heaters all day long. (laughing) - Jim Leland or somebody like that. - Right. - Yeah. - No, no, I think Dave Mark, it is a, your booth is a great place to be because it is. - It is. - Sports everywhere, it's relaxing. - I come with three dudes that enjoy sports. - That's right. - Yeah, you could, there are probably announcers that really just like announcing, that are like crazy sports fans like all of you. - I would hate to be with somebody who only likes announcing. So, we got our Friar Friday guest here with us now. Alec Jacob joins us. Alec, how are you, my friend? - I'm doing great, how are you guys? - We are well, thank you for coming on. Tough loss last night for the ball club. I mean, for a guy like you, you've come in and been able to, to kind of, you know, help when you've been asked to come in and get some outs. I mean, what has this experience been like for you this year compared to, you know, the past years where you've got an opportunity? - Well, it's been great, you know. Like you said, coming in, throwing whenever, you know, they need me. And I think this year I know a little bit more of what they want from me and what to expect up here. And so, it's helped me prepare throughout the season and in the off season for what's to come. And, you know, I'm just really taking it all in, honestly, enjoying every day. Obviously, it's incredible atmosphere here at Peko and I'm just enjoying every minute and, you know, just taking it all in. - Yeah, doing a hell of a job. Alec Jacob with the Padres. Ten innings of work, 14 strikeouts, one walk. That's a ratio that'll get it done for sure. I'm just curious, 'cause let's put last night behind us now, but after that game's over, the bullpen's such a tight fraternity. Do you guys all go, at least give a little tap to Robert Swar? I mean, this guy's done it all for you guys all year. Does everybody need to go over and just say, hey, head up and we'll see you tomorrow? - Yeah, for sure, a little bit. But, I mean, at the same time, you know, he's the guy we're gonna rely on in those situations, no matter what. And, you know, so I like to lose any faith in that guy, you know, next time he's out there, he's gonna shut it down, you know, nothing changes at all, but yeah, for sure, we're gonna pick him up and hopefully we can pick him up today and he'll get back on the horse as soon as possible. - Alec Jacob joins us here on Frier Friday, Gwen and Chris, and Alec, you have a unique throwing style. I mean, you kind of, I would say, sidearment. Has this always been how you've thrown the base bar? Is this something you developed in your pro career? - Yeah, it's kind of been something I've always done a little bit younger when I was a young kid. I kind of swung the ball from the side a little bit, being kind of a little weaker and it helped me get the ball across the infield, a little bit better when I was playing infield. And so it kind of stuck with me. And then I got into high school and I was, you know, pitching over the top and pitching from the side and, you know, b-low is pretty similar in both ways. So it was pretty easy to see the future there from the side and I got some looks as a sidearmer from a couple of schools. And so from there, it was pretty easy for me to make that decision and just go full sidearm. I was fully sidearm by the time I was junior in high school. - Oh, wow. - Been a while. - Yeah, God, I can imagine as a sophomore in high school coming up as a right-handed hitter against you. I'd be like bailing out like big time. Alec Jacob is our guest. Is there anything that side differently with the ball, you know, than a regular, you know, over the top thurs or are things that maybe guys look at you and go, "Man, I wish I could do that." - I'm sure. I mean, I think obviously it's probably more easy to get like a horizontal movement, go east to west and west to east. So I think that's definitely helpful for me. I don't know, I think it's kind of hard to say. I think it depends on the guy a little bit, but I think, you know, throwing a sweeper, you know, big horizontal sliders. Those are easier for me where it's like, you know, trying to throw for me like a curve ball or a split or anything like that. This seems like almost impossible. So I feel like those are the main ones. - Alec, you know, you mentioned something about velocity. You said it was the velocity's bit was about the same, no matter whether you're over the top or where you are right now. I only bring that up because, you know, we're in a league now that really only sees, you know, high velocity, you're unique in that way. What would you tell a young athlete at this point that doesn't have that kind of velocity? I mean, what is it that they should be focused on if they have dreams of being a big leader? You figured it out a way to get here despite not having the high velocity that a lot of guys have. What kind of advice would you give to a young athlete right now? - Yeah, that's a great question. I would say just, you know, find other ways to, you know, make it work and, you know, there's plenty of ways to do that. Obviously for me, I throw a sidearm and it makes it a little bit more deceptive. But I think there's a lot of things, you know, you like, you can have incredible command and get guys out that way. And, you know, that kind of picture may seem a little bit lost nowadays. But yeah, I definitely think that it's still, you know, a possibility and I've done plenty of different things around my career to try and find a way to get a hitter off balance, you know, like messing with timing on the mound and changing different arm slots. Like, I've really just tried to get creative. And I think that's helped me a lot. Just understanding. Some partially like my ability and who I am as a pitcher and like what I do well. And then also just trying to be uncomfortable to the hitter. Like, how can I do something that hitters not going to, like, you know, how can I keep them off balance? Those have all been things that I've thought about throughout my career and like talk to hitters about. Just like, you know, what do you guys hate that I do? And it's got from there. - That's smart. Smart Alec Jacob is with us. Alec, appreciate the time. Last thing for me, you went to Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington. So you played in San Diego, I'm sure against USD. How much does it like drive you crazy when somebody says, "Hey, how was life at Gonzaga?" (laughing) Well, they totally boxed the name of the school. - Yeah, I mean, after a while now, kind of gotten used to it, but you know, you think with the basketball team's success, it's like, you know, you really think that everyone would have it down by now. But yeah, I'm really hopeful for them this year too. They really got a good team it looks like, hoping that they can finally, you know, get that ring that they've been chasing. - Well, hopefully you guys can get the same thing with the Padres. Alec, thanks so much for your time. - Absolutely. - Enjoy catching up with you and look forward to seeing you out at the ballpark. - Thank you, Alec. - Yeah, thanks for having me. I appreciate you guys. - Awesome job, Alec Jacob there. Getting her done? - Yeah, no doubt about it. - Yeah, I can think he's heard the Gonzaga thing a few times. (laughing) - You can hear it in his voice when you say Gonzaga. - Yeah, oh man, another Gonzaga question again. No, I, here's how I remember Gonzaga. It's zags, not zags. - Because they're the zags, that's right. If you remember that, you'll remember it, so. - Is that a good job? I liked what he had to say. That was a really good piece of advice, I think for any young pitcher out there, talk to hitters and ask them what you do that they don't like. That's just very simple. I mean, tap into that knowledge. - Talk to your, talk to your hitters. You know, young pitchers out there, they'll tell you what they don't like. I just like that he had some good advice for those who don't have the velocity, right? I mean, I honestly think that that's going to circle its way back into the game. Like if you're a young pitcher right now, lock in on the velocity, on the command. Like if you can command the baseball and get out, especially at a young age, you're going to get bigger, you're going to get stronger. You know what I'm saying? So why not master that point first and then let the velocity come later? It's almost like a hitter, right? Back in the day when they used to come watch young hitters hit, the scouts used to tell you the power wasn't the thing they were looking for. They were looking for everything else because they knew the power would come with age and strength. And I think, you know, we are in a velocity timeframe where that is the all, be all, but I think it's going to wrap itself back around command. And you can already see Major League Baseball hedging towards it with some of these rule proposals and different things to try to force the starters to pitch longer. That starts with command. You can pitch as long as you can. If you can throw the baseball where you want. - I hope you're answering it. - And Greg Maddox is a great, you know, you brought up, we'll talk about Greg Maddox later on today. He's a great example of a guy who didn't throw hard, but mastered the ability to throw it exactly where he wanted to. And he talked a lot about what I like to talk about. Upsetting the hitters timing. That's where his two philosophy. Let me throw this ball where I want and keep that guy off balance. And he just destroyed hitters that way. - He did it better than anyone. - Yeah, no doubt. - Let's get the break. We are a little bit late, but Mike Schiltt spoke earlier today plus the NFL. We got into it a little bit, more games today. Or another game today out in Brazil. Apparently you can't wear it green, but we'll talk about that on the other side as well, more going to Chris. - From the mind of a two foot tall talking spokespuppet comes this year's biggest challenge. And listen, I mean, there's not tries to, man. He's throwing 101, got to put a swing on it, and got the good part of the bat, and that's the game. But look, Robert's been a huge part of what we do, and trust him completely. And we'll go back and get him tonight. Mike Schulton, with the morning show, guys, Ben and Woods, talking about, of course, Robert Suarez. Scravey did put these statistics together for us, so that his work does not all go for naught. I will read some of them before August 7th. You should let this work over naught. Yeah, just let it go for naught. I didn't actually put this tape. Oh, you didn't put that together? This is from the Kevin A.C. newsletter. He always puts together a nice informative table. I suffice to say, Robert Suarez' statistics have not been as good the last month as they were the first 4 and 1/2 months. True, yeah. But that does not mean that it won't just switch right back around to starting with his next appearance. The guy's throwing 101 miles an hour. Last night, he clearly did not have the command of it. I mean, he walked to. One of the guys that got out, he was on a 2-0 count, and Torkelson flied out to second base. So he was behind every hitter. And we just haven't seen that all year, Tony. And so I'm sure the 3-2 pitch he made to Meadows on the home run probably was what you would call too good of a strike, you know? I mean, when you don't have the command, you don't get the great location. I'm going to pull it up, because in my mind-- It wasn't bad. It wasn't that it wasn't bad. It just wasn't a strike. It seemed like it was up, and it was out over to play, which honestly is like the perfect pitch to kind of run into. It's not close to your body, so you get extended. It's already elevated. So if you can just add 101, if you can just get the barrel there with any type of good swing, the ball's going to come off. And I'm going to pull it up just so I can-- because in my mind, it might feel like it was different than it actually was. Trying to get to it, too. But I would like to look at it myself, but I don't know how to access it, so I'll just leave it up to you guys. Let's see. And I have the technology over here. It was up and away, almost to the top of the zone. The ball is touching the outside of the ball. OK, so it wasn't just right here. It's center cut, then. See, it's right there. OK. It's not center cut. Yeah, I got you. But you were at the game, so you have a different angle, too. Well, I was-- yeah, I didn't know where it was, honestly. I just figured it was probably a little too fat, because the guy hit it out of the ballpark. But yeah, it was quite the night. I will say this on my way out of the game last night. Some guy came up to me and he said, you know, after that one, Chris, you may need to assemble an emergency meeting of the round table to get everybody back together, calm everybody down. Because if anybody heard the round table yesterday, honestly, our weekly-- you know, where we all get together and talk Padres for an hour, you would have honestly thought that the Padres are not only going to win this year's World Series, they're going to win the next 10 World Series. I mean, we are so bullish and so high on this team right now. Someone on the channel. You guys didn't have anybody there to kind of keep you grounded. No, nobody kept us grounded yesterday. We just ran away with ourselves yesterday. And so, you know, Parker Meadows grounded us last night is basically what happened. Someone on the chat said they blamed the round table for the loss because of what they said about Josh Hader. I don't know what was said about Josh Hader, but I don't remember Josh's name coming up yesterday. Well, he's going to be in town in like, cold days. Look, if you want to blame us for the loss last night, it makes you feel better, more than happy to. You know, when I listened to the round table, Chris, I really thought the Padres were never going to lose a game. No, I didn't either. And so, last night I was just furious with you. The entire time. It was just furious on us. All right, 246 is the time moving forward here. Tony brought it up at last night's football game, the Chiefs and the Ravens. You got two good teams. You know, they come out, they play pretty good for an opening night game. And it comes right down to the last play. I mean, I don't know what else you want. If you're the national football league, Lamar Jackson, you know, I think the one that really was the killer for the Ravens was not Isaiah Likeley's Toby and on the line to wipe out the potential tying touchdown. But to play before that, when Zay Flowers was standing alone in the end zone, and Lamar Jackson missed him on that throw, Tony, by about as much as an NFL quarterback in this guy. I didn't see it, but it was, I mean, when you say missed him, like he didn't even throw it to him, are you? No, he just missed, no, he threw it to him, but it was nowhere near him. Yeah, he let him wait too much. He was nowhere, or he has by one of the two, like he did. No, he was running to the left. And Lamar Jackson threw it over his right shoulder. It was, it wasn't even communication, because it was clear which way he was running. Yeah, but Lamar Jackson, I mean, NFL quarterbacks don't miss guys by that, that big of a margin very often. No wonder he blamed the last play of the game. Yeah, so yeah, that's right. He was trying to get the focus on the last play of the game, not the second to last play of the game. A couple of other things stood out. I mean, how did the Chiefs, or how were they allowed to draft Xavier Worthy? The guy scores two touchdowns. First time he touched the ball, runs a 21 yard, end around for a touchdown. He was in the end zone so fast, nobody even knew he had the ball. I mean, it was unbelievable. It was a blink of an eye. This guy took the hand off and was gone. And then, you know, straight down the sideline for another touchdown. So the Chiefs have this guy. That's probably the only Chiefs guy I was hate watching yesterday, because I wanted to, well, I wanted to take him in like three different drafts, didn't get to him. Yeah. And then I got a chance to actually see him in live in action. Oh my gosh. Yeah. They got theirself there. I mean, I shouldn't say that because that would be might be disrespectful to Tyree Kill, because of how good he has been as a wide receiver. But if this guy is even close to that, you can go ahead and go ahead and pencil it back to back to back Super Bowls, right? Yeah. I mean, Rashi Rice is, you know, obviously going to be a number one guy. They still have Hollywood Brown who didn't play last night. Kelsey was hardly even heard from. You know, I thought Mahomes was ordinary for Mahomes. I mean, he was good for every other quarterback. But yeah, to have this Xavier worthy. And just to make you feel any better, Tony, I'm trying to add it up here. I think I got him for eight, 14, 20 plus fantasy points last night, not bad for his debut. On the other side, you know, Baltimore is going to be fine. They didn't really get Derek Henry going. Three and a half yards a carry. I think they'd like to do better than that. But we said yesterday, the Chiefs have a really good defense now. Yeah. And that's why they won the Super Bowl last year. Was their great defense. And they did a good job. And they're without their, they traded their top corner too. And they still kind of shut things down yesterday. That's a good defense for sure. Yeah, they did. Lamar ran wild. But you know, you have to pick your poison if you're Kansas. If you're playing ball the way, you've got to let them do something. I will say this. They better start handing the ball off to Derek Henry. I don't know if Lamar Jackson can take that kind of-- Yeah, good point. 16 carries is a lot. That's a lot. And they were that like, I'm dropping back to pass, taking off and running. They were like, at least four-- I saw in that game where they snapped it to him. And it was 100% a run play for him. Yeah. Baltimore, yeah, a little bit too much Lamar last night, maybe, was a different. Zay Flowers is going to be a really good receiver. He was open up all night long. Probably they stopped going to him a little bit. Now, the big controversy in the game for fantasy players and what do we care about anything else was whatever happened to Mark Andrews, the tight end for the Ravens, who's like Mr. Pro bowler. He got two passes. While the other backup tight end caught 9 for 111 and a touchdown and almost had the game tying touchdown also. I don't know where Mark Andrews was. Well, one thing I think lively obviously was able to do that because they're clearly keying in on Mark Andrews. He's been, I mean, outside of the last year, he's been the leading receiver for them, what, three, four years running. Until I think Zay Flowers finally got him last year. But I think it's a great-- he's a great decoy because there's a thing. Tight ends, running backs. And I think those positions specifically-- you got to try to get them to a certain point of the season before you truly start to lean on them. And Mark Andrews is coming off. He had a horrible car accident right before the season started. Remember, he had to make his way back for that championship game after the ankle injury that pretty much cost them a lot of last year. So I think it's not the greatest look on week one for him, not to get the ball that much. But I don't think that last for the entire season. I think eventually they get going back to him. I mean, they also know that that's Lamar's favorite target. Or has been his favorite target too. Yeah. Well, I'm hoping I'm one of those who's hopeful he'll start getting the ball. Here's why. You know, my wife, Lori, who doesn't like any help on her fantasy draft, it's funny when she gets Mark Andrews and he has a bad game. And then after the game, she tells me, why'd you tell me to take him? It's a good point. It's a good point. Why didn't you tell her to take him? I didn't tell her to take him. You did your draft by yourself. Remember, you didn't want any of my help. So you needed to blame somebody who's got a new buddy. My fault that Mark Andrews is on her team. You know what you should say? Is that all right? Well, just trade me him. Oh, well, I'll be fine with that. Really? Yeah, he ate him so much. I'll take him. He didn't do much last night, but it was a hell of a game. This is football. I almost feel like the Chiefs, you know, they had the ball at the end there with a seven-point lead. And I don't know, my homes could run the game out, but they just, for some reason in football, they never run the game out and they have to punt it back and the other team gets a chance. And that's just the NFL. By the way, our guy is speaking of punting now to Riza. Yeah. The two puns I saw, and I don't remember how many he punted, but the first one was about a 58-piece. The second one was about 50 and ended up with three for a 48 average, but he had one that got down at about the two-yard line, too. So it was a good start. You could tell the first pun he had. He was a little nervous, because he overbooted that one. He just crushed it into the end zone, yeah. But good for Matt Ariza, man. It was long overdue after everything that poor guy went through, including being questioned by everyone in this city, including us, you know? So, I mean, we weren't immune from it, but good for him to finally break out there and get his NFL debut. And it was a success for him, so. I mean, he's on the perfect team, if you want to make your NFL debut. You know what I'm saying? I don't know if he's on the perfect team, because I don't know how much punting he's going to actually get. Yeah, that's true. But you're going to be going deep in the playhouse, most likely. Yeah, for sure. For sure. He's also holding on the extra points, I noticed. The field goal team. Oh, so he could be able to throw on. Maybe they'll run a little fake. The Chiefs are certainly not beyond something like that. Does a holder running for a touchdown ever work? Ever? I don't think you can find some footage of that working. Sure. It just doesn't seem like a holder is. Not consistently. The fastest guy in the field. And poor guys expected him to run, so he got a head start. That's true. That arises a really good athlete. I mean, I remember the thing I remember about him was not only his punting, but how many tackles he went down the field and made. That's right, I forgot about that. He used to lay guys out. All right, we got an hour in the books. Tony's down to Petco, Padre's Giants. Later, more Gwen and Chris next. Into the three o'clock hour, we roll Tony Gwen, Jr. Chris Elo, Matt Scravey. We were going to do a little daily gambit, but we've got some other topics we can cover. We'll push the daily, the gambit, bad, another segment or two. Padre's back in action again tonight. Giants in town, three games set before the Padre's and out on one of the last two road trips of the season. You got three, no, you got, well, we got nine game, nine home games left for the Pods. Including tonight, right? Including tonight. You got this, you got the Astros and you got the White Sox. You got the White Sox and then you have on the road, you got two in Seattle, you got three in San Francisco, three in L.A., three in Arizona. 11 on the road. 11 on the road, 19 games left. By the way, quick programming note, everybody. I was thrilled to see this today. I say that with a lot of anger. Tonight's game is the Apple TV Plus game again. Oh, yeah, no. God, why do we keep drawing those games? Now, I know it's great because we all listen on the radio and if you have Apple TV, you can listen to Tony and Jesse watch the game and listen to them. So for that part, it's good. But for the rest of you out there, you know, not everybody has Apple TV Plus and you want to watch the ball game tonight, you can't do it. Fair enough. You can't watch it, but you can listen to it, 97, three to fan, still have Jesse and I here. You know, it's funny as I forgot it was Apple, but I shouldn't know because Dave Marcus, not a fan of Apple TV, it messes up the whole gig, right? Oh no. You know, we get a game feed. Anytime ESPN or Apple TV comes in, game feed is delayed. Oh no. Of course, of course, the delay doesn't really affect Dave, but he cares immensely about Jesse and I. Boy, Dave and our feed being delayed. And so, you know, I think we've come to, we've become accustomed to dealing with it. We know kind of going in is going to be what Apple is like about, it's probably pretty delayed in the ESPN. It's pretty delayed. So, you know, you got to make the adjustments, but it definitely doesn't make things easy on my man Dave Marcus. But I had forgotten and then I looked across and I see my man D-train on the other side. That's where it was. - Yeah, doing true. - Just doing the Apple game today. So, that was a reminder. Currently, right now, Hosun Kim getting a SIM game in right now with some minor leagueers they have called up here. It looks like it's just ending here, which is a good thing. So, you know, Padres is for as nice as that lineup looks with Fernando Tatis in it. It's going to get a little deeper with the Hosun Kim coming back. You know, shitty return here soon. - Yeah, Hosun go bad eighth. I would think when he comes back and Hagashiyoka will slot down to ninth or whoever's catching. We already talked about the fact that the Padres catchers, you know, Campusano included. I know everybody's down on Ole Luis right now, but, you know, 83 RBIs from that catcher position. That's not bad in the number nine hole, which is what the Padres will have pretty soon. So, yeah, it's a good thing. - I mean, those people who are down at camp here are the same people that want Suarez to be removed from his closer spot here. - Yeah, he's done. Yeah, he's no more Suarez, no more campy. Like basically, to some of you fans, in a game which is more failure than anything else, baseball. After all, good hitters are only successful. 30, you know, little over 30% of the time. - Great hitters are only successful, yeah. - Great hitters, right. But people in a game that is more failure oriented don't want any players on their team who ever fail. So, I don't know what you want to put on the team then because Fernando was over four last night, so it's probably time to move on from him. - Get him off the team. - Machado, I don't think had to hit last night. Get rid of him. - He's got a bad night. - Jackson Marrow was over four also. - Get him off the team. - And did not come through and hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth when he had the chance to-- - He's washed. - He's washed. - This guy should be ashamed of themselves out there. - I did see quite a few washed comments last night. - Oh, I'm sure. - Get out of here. - That's not even you saw that. - I did. - I didn't say it. - Who was washed? - That's the favorite. That's the favorite new slang is washed. - Yeah, washed means you're just terrible, you're done. - You're the one that I saw that really made me, angry with Suarez, you just cannot afford to pitch him on back to back games. And I didn't go through, but how many times did he pitch back to back games this year and been-- - For every time. - Every time. - The one that irritated me the most was, he throws to me fast, but it wasn't a problem when he threw like 90 straight fast balls at the beginning of the season. It was mowing everybody down. - No one got to hit off him? - No. - It wasn't a problem now. - People, I will say this. - It's about the year season. - Oh, stop. - I don't think it's a bad year. - Don't use them on back to back nights. - Don't make yourself look bad here. - But I, - Thanks, Chris. - Trying to help you. - But I, he was used on Monday, he was used on Wednesday, he was used last night. - Okay. - So I'm not sure-- - What's your point here, buddy? - I'm not sure if that was too much usage for the four day period, three days out of the four. - Did you go through like the previous four days and the previous four days? - Okay, let me see, let me see. Well, he had a bunch of time off, so that's okay. He did, he went back to back and then he had a day off. - I don't know that he's done three and four often. - Tony, you don't get to answer this question. - Okay. - This is all for you, Scrabby. - Okay. - What are you doing tonight, manager Matt Scrabby, with a two run lead bottom of the night, or the top of the night? - Well, I don't think Scrabby is available. - Scrabby's out? - Who's gonna close the game for you tonight? - No, wait, wait, wait. Manager of Matt Scrabby says he would think so. So where are we going? - I mean, three out of the last four days. - Okay, he's out. Where are you going? I just asked you, where are you going? - See you. - Tanner Scott pitched in all those games. Jason Adam pitched in all those games. Who's finishing tonight, manager? - Man, Scrabby. - Scrabby forgot that those guys pitched in the last four days. - Yes, you did. I would say manager Scrabby. - I mean, I think you got to go with more at home, right? - But at home to close tonight, Tony. - He's the next up, right? - All right. We'll see what they do, let's hope. - Let me see what we got here. - Let's see what they do. - And more at home, winning inning, the other day. - Scrabby's going to more at home for the close. - No, you can't use Scott, you can't use Adam. - Well, I know the one guy that has pitched in all. - Scott has pitched in every game in that last series. - Yeah, he's been everywhere. The only guy that has any rest right now, if you're only going by that, is Brian Hoeing. He didn't pitch in the game. - But I feel like he's going to have to pitch some point, like eat up some innings in the middle of the game. - Now Michael King's going eight and hoeing in close. - I find that. - That's the plan, manager Scrabby. - We're seeing a strata on the chat. And the reason I don't, Jeremiah Strata hasn't been as crisp as he was earlier in the year. So I don't know that I trust him with the closing. - Guys are hilarious. The season, the season has taken a disastrous turn for the worst in just a matter of one swing of the bat. (laughing) - This is what happens when you lose on the last pitch of the game, basically. - I know. - I wasn't, I thought like, I was just stunned that it actually went out. - I think everybody, I was stunned. Like, I thought the same thing, Kristen. The ball came off the bat and I immediately looked for pro far. When I saw the back of his jersey, I know A, he wasn't playing shallow. So I was like, he's running out of space and that ball doesn't look like it's coming down in enough and quickly enough. - Yeah. - And, you know, I think everybody was surprised by it. So, you know, you turn the page. I don't know that there's an easy answer in terms of what do you do tonight? Because literally Adam-- - Yeah, it is a fair question, actually, 'cause everybody's been used. - Everybody, Adam, Scott, Swore has thrown all three games in that series. Estrada threw in yesterday's, the day before he had the Monday off. He didn't pitch in that game. It was pretty straightforward. But I'm pretty sure he picked in the game before that. - I think Alex Jacob should have broken the news to us on our interview that he's closing tonight. - The closer tonight. - Whoa, we do have Yuki Matsui. He's only pitched one day in the month of September. If everybody wants Yuki Matsui as a closer, go for it. - There you go. - Nevermind, how about we just win the game 11 to two and then-- - That also would help. - Yes, and then you could go close, Scrap. - A little blowout would go a long way. Before we lose time, I want to get to this because it fits into the category of something Chris and I talk about in today's media landscape of, I don't know, in this case, it's not even a rush to be first. It's just a rush to get some clicks. I saw this on Instagram today and I was almost like blown away that ESPN and Sports Center had actually posted it as a legitimate post. And the post was taken off of a Twitter, or excuse me, an ex statement basically. And it was some Rando basically saying that Mark Andrews was playing left tackle and he was sorry that his fantasy football season was over. And at first glance, I looked at it, I was like, "Wait, why is he playing left tackle?" And so I look a little bit closer only to see that he's not even playing left tackle. He's in the slot. And so I say this because Sports Center took a random tweet and posted it on their account, which is supposed to be a legitimate news-based sports platform. - You'd like to believe it is. - And so you get the people where it is not a big deal. I'm not saying they're saying like this is like, it's a tragedy that this has happened that, you know, Sports Center's doing, but it just goes to show you where we're at and why people feel the way they feel about news outlets in general. Because it's not just a sports thing. This is across the board. They put that up there to get clicks. 'Cause clearly he's in the slot. I mean, he's set up like a wide receiver. He's not in like a offensive lineman stance. If you count the people who are on the line, he's like seven. So he can't, he's not even on the line. But I just brought that up. - He just wanted everybody to look at it and yeah. - Because every Mark Andrews' fantasy owner out there was like, oh yep, yep. - Yeah, 100% they like him. - How many fantasy leagues do we think there are in the country? - Millions. - Right? - Yeah. - A million at least. - At least a million. - So that means a million people own Mark Andrews. That means a million people are disgruntled today. They're only like a million likes, including my wife who's blaming me for it. - Thinking that John Harbaugh was like, "Hey man, why don't you go play left tackle for us today?" - Yeah, we need the blocking there. - John Harbaugh said. - When I saw it, I was like, trying to figure out what was happening. Like Tony was like, are they actually telling me that Mark Andrews moved to left tackle? There's just like newsworthy for me? No, it was just a fantasy player who's mad at Mark Andrews. - Yeah, it's hilarious. - Before we let you go, Tony, I want to give you the last word. We did not get a chance yesterday. And it really was our oversight. We were so into the opening night of football and everything. But Alex Morgan, a great San Diego athlete and great United States athlete. Announcing a retirement from soccer, gonna play in our final match here on Sunday. I believe there are some tickets still available, Scrabies said to down the match. - Some affordable tickets there. - If you want to see Alex Morgan. But Tony, I'll let you talk. I mean, what she has meant to young ladies in our country is the one thing that we don't look upon enough as grizzled journalists, you know? People are saying, well, she hasn't scored any goals lately and she didn't make the US World Cup team and her plays down downhill. I don't look at any of that. I just look at what Alex Morgan has meant to a lot of people in this country, mostly young women. - Yeah, listen, there are times where you can critique the athlete based on what they're doing on the field. But there is also another level to it where an athlete has done so much for a set sport. It has accomplished so much in set sport. As they get to the back end of their career, I don't know that they should be judged as harshly. And I think Alex Morgan falls into that category. She, I mean, I have three girls, you guys know this. And that's a name that came up in our household a lot. And, you know, I posted it on my platform yesterday when she announced it. My daughter, who doesn't have Instagram, by design, didn't see it. So she posted, she sent it to our family, our family text message board that we have. Like, and it was a sad day for her. Like, she is sad that Alex Morgan is no longer gonna play a sport that she probably started playing because she saw Alex Morgan playing at one point. - This is one of the most popular soccer players in American history. - Without a doubt. - And you don't even have to put women's history in that phrase. You could just say, it's soccer. - Well, well, decorated soccer players we've ever had. And, you know, what's pretty cool is, I can remember when she was like the young one that was coming into that soccer, that United States soccer team. And, you know, now she's the one that's kind of walking off into the sunset. You know, she's, congratulations to Alex, she's expecting her second child. I think that also played a part into this retirement. But she's done, I think she said, I read somewhere and she said, I've done everything I can for the sport of women's soccer. Just think about where it's advanced. She's not the only one that is, it should be credited with it. She's certainly a big part of it. The pay gap that has been closed in that specific sport. We have a full women's league that is thriving now, in part. - Yeah. - Because of how especially-- - How much does she have to do with the fact that the WSA-- - The WSA? That's an old league. - The WSL? - That's another league that I worked for. - Sorry. (laughing) - God, sorry. - In WSL. - Yeah, in WSL. How much did she have for that that exists here? In San Diego? - I was just about to say that. I was just about to say the mere fact that she has, she came here for this startup organization in its first year. And the reason why it's popular in large part is because of how much success they had in that first year. And she was the biggest part of it. She was scoring goals at an a crazy clip at that. I think she led the league in scoring that year, the first year. - Yeah, I think so. - Yeah, Kudos to Alex Hatssofter for the incredible career she's had. And the incredible work she's done in terms of women's sports overall. She's a big part of that story. - 123 career goals as a national team member, the fifth leading scorer ever. And they break it down here. It's pretty interesting to me, all of the countries that they've played against, all the way down to, she has a goal in her career against Guatemala and one against Belgium and one against, couple against Haiti. And she's been all over the world doing this and doing it well. So we were lucky to have her play here in San Diego to finish up her career. Good luck to Alex Morgan for sure. - All right, that's gonna do it for this segment. I have to bow out. You guys will hear from me a little bit later, but it's time to go to Padre work now. Were she rice over under 62 and a half receiving yards? Chris went under, I went over, and I won the bet, but I was playing against them in fantasy. He had 103 yards. - You didn't wanna win the bet. - No, yeah. - Derek Henry, over under eight and a half receiving yards. We both went over, think he's got one. He caught two balls, but he got nearly yards, so he had zero yards. - No, he had no catches, he had two targets. - Two targets, that's what he has, so he didn't catch any. - Lamar Jackson, over under 47 and a half rushing yards. You said over, I said under, you were very right. - He was way over, he had 122 rushing yards. Kansas City, three point favorites in the game last night. Both of us chose the Ravens. We were both wrong, Kasey won by seven. Total points in the game, over under 47. It doesn't matter what we said, because it was 47. - Push, shall we push? - Yeah. - Advantage, push. And then Derek Henry, over under 64 and a half rushing yards. You went over, I went under, he was under with 46. Travis Kelsey, over under 56 and a half receiving yards. You were under, I went over, you were correct, 34 yards. No one's talking about Travis Kelsey, you didn't do anything. - No, he did nothing. Very good. - We're talking about Mark Andrews, but no one's talking about Travis Kelsey. - Yeah, for some reason. I wonder why. - Because we're tired of talking about Travis Kelsey. - That could be true. Kelsey Fatigue, only had four targets for Kelsey, that's a little strange, I must say. - Didn't Noah Gray have like, how many did Noah Gray had three targets? - Oh, but he had a lot more yards, right? - A couple more. - Just a couple more. - Yeah. - All right, so Pagula. - Jessica. - Jessica Pagula, minus two and a half in the US Open over Moogava? - Yes. - Moogava. Congratulations, Joe Fortenbaugh. - Oh and three, my friend. - Wow, they're not putting those up on the TV. - No, they never put that up on the TV. Who has more rushing yards tonight? Say quads, Barkley making his debut or Josh Jacobs making his. - Oh, wow. - I'll say Josh Jacobs because I'm playing against him in fantasy and I'm unlucky that way. - Who you go say, say quads? - Say quads, Barkley more rushing yards tonight, okay? Passing yards, who has more? Jalen Hertz, Jordan Love. Scrappy. - Mm. - That's a good one. - I think him. I thought you'd like him. - If the pack win, Jordan Love has more passing yards. So I'll go with Jordan Love. - Jordan Love? - Yep. - Jordan Love, 'cause the packers are gonna lose and he's gonna throw at him. - And then they'll be trying to catch up. - All right. - I'll say Love. Tomorrow night, Oregon State comes here to take on the Aztecs who got some bad news by the way. They're starting left tackle out for the year. - Oh no. - Injury, sandy state. So if you really want to do it, I won't get that mad at you. - I'm a beaver. - So you're taking them. - I'm taking the beavers. - LSU by 48 and a half over Nickel State. You love these. That's why I put them in. - Hey, at least they played a good team in their first game. - They did and they lost. - I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say Nickel State. - You're going with Nickel State. - Yeah. - Good for you. If LSU doesn't win this game by 50, they're gonna be in the Nickel seats. - Oh, hell. - I'll take LSU. One of the better games of the day, Oregon 19 over Boise State, Oregon's at home. Oregon only beat Idaho by 10. You know Boise State's better than that, but I'll still take Oregon 'cause I bet they get the coach got their attention this week. And said you guys better shape up. Oregon minus 19. - Oh, I heard that. I didn't, I'm gonna go with Boise. - Gonna go with Boise. - Boise. - Boise. - Yes, we've spent a lot of time getting that right on this show. - WNBA tonight. Kaitlyn Clark's in action. 20 and a half points. Taking on one of the better teams of the night, the Minnesota links. 20 and a half for Kaitlyn over under. - I'm just gonna keep going over. Stay over. I'm gonna go under just 'cause Minnesota is very good. And then if she goes under all of the angel Reese for president, people will come out. Leave these two kids alone and just let them play basketball and do great things. Everybody is trying to embroil them in controversy. - That's true. - It's driving me crazy. If you go on Twitter like I do, you do. Everything is, you know, Kaitlyn Clark sucks. No, she doesn't. Angel Reese should stop tipping the ball. Leave her alone. They're rookies. They're the only two that don't care. - It's kind of like Pride Paul Skins and Chats in Maryland. - Yeah. Anyway. All right, one more. Michael King tonight. - Mm. - Six and a half strikeouts over under. He's due to be back on the beam. I'm gonna go over. - Me too. - Okay. - Back on the beam. - We're good. This isn't just a regular top five list. I love it, it sounds significant, but I love it. This is the countdown. And it starts right now, a 97.3 the fan. All right, it's that time of week where we pick a topic, count down our favorite five in that topic. So I think we've picked kind of a wide ranging one today. The category, and we can go a whole bunch of different spots with this, is our favorite five sports documentaries. Five documentaries and there are so many to choose from now. I mean, when you think about feature films that were documentaries, there's some classics there. But now with Netflix coming along. Oh yeah. And with Hulu. Netflix and the pandemic too. Yeah, right. And 30 for 30. And everybody else, you know, it's doing sports docs. So we even talked about this yesterday, Tony. I don't know if you're out on this, but like the Hard Knocks series on HBO. Is it getting to a point where it might get a little stale just in the sense that we have so much access all over the place now? You know, we got the quarterback show. We got the receivers show. We've got the Hard Knocks. We've got, you know, every other thing that takes us behind the scenes. Are we ever going to get jaded as a viewing audience that we, that's not enough for us anymore? I mean, there's only so much. I do think you're, I think you're right, right? I think there is a risk of oversaturating. You know, all of our, all of the audience with too much of the same thing or different versions of the same thing. I don't know. It depends. I don't think they're doing another quarterback version. I know they've moved on to wide receivers and it's more about the individuals than it is. Yeah. The team aspect, which I think Hard Knocks has kind of got the jump on. And I think they could be playing themselves by doing the end season, the off season. Like you're gonna, you're like, and I guess there's only, I guess on Hard Knocks, like the one they play on HBO is the regular C, or as soon as you pre-season one. I guess that you have to qualify for that, right? Like you, you can't be in it unless you fit like certain criteria. I know teams even want to do it. Right. Unless teams want to do it, right? So maybe that keeps it somewhat fresh 'cause you're only seeing like good, somewhat good teams during the regular C. I don't know who's done it that's been like really good. It seems like everybody else is like fighting to be there at that point. So I don't know, it could, there is a chance of oversaturating it though. Yeah, you can go behind the scenes pretty much anywhere, but this is a sports documentary. So we'll begin our countdown, top five, and we'll start with the man who came up with the idea for the category earlier today. His name, match grade. - Thanks, Chris. - Number five. - My number five is actually going to be, I think it was a 30 for 30, I'm pretty sure it was, but it's called the Two Escobar's. And I got-- - Oh yeah, that was a good one. - I watched Narcos a couple months ago, and I got really into the whole Pablo Escobar thing, which then led me to this documentary, and it was crazy. - It was an unbelievable story. - Unbelievable. - Re-count the story in which you remember. - Sad, but remember, yeah. - Yeah, so one of the players for the Argentine, or the Colombian team made a mistake during one of the World Cup games. - He scored an own goal. - Yes, yes. - Against the United States in the 1994 World Cup. - And then he was murdered. - At the Rose Bowl. - Yeah. - And no more than a month later, if even that long, he was murdered. - Yeah, that's right. And his last name was Escobar. - Yes, and they were right around the time of-- - Tied into the drug team in Escobar. - Yeah. - 'Cause he was tied into that team, correct, if I'm not mistaken. - He was tied into, I'm not sure if he was actually like tied into the team, but he was definitely tied into soccer within the Colombian country. So he may have been in the background. It was kind of a frightening documentary when you was-- - It was. - He was, it was freaking out. - It was, that's what I-- - Imagine that happening. - Yep. - And that was 30 years ago, before Twitter and everything else. - Yeah, but anyway. - All right, Tony, what's your number five? Sports Doc. - Uh, number five on my list is a sports doc that took place when I was seventh, eighth grade, maybe. Hoop Dreams. - Yeah. - That's number five on mine. It was a really, really good documentary. It was really one of the things that got me like really going on basketball. - That was the first one that followed a young person, right? - Yeah. - Yeah. - It was a couple of guys, Arthur, A.G. and another guy, and they tried, just followed their entire high school career. - William Gates. - Right, William Gates. - Yeah. - And did they, you know, would they make it to the NBA and how they followed their, it was pretty intense. - It was, it was pretty intense. It was like our first like real documentary like that. - Yeah. - And I think we connected, young people connected because it was a young, two young people that they were, were following at the time. So yeah, that's, that's number five on my list. - All right, I'm gonna beat Tony to this one. I don't know if he had it on his list, but I know that he liked it. And I just watched it myself and I loved it. I don't know if it would stay on the test of time, but for this week anyway, my number five is the Greg Maddox documentary that just ran out on the MLB network. - That was good. - That was good. - I told everybody about it earlier this week. I said, "You gotta watch it, it's that good." But I, I nerded out over it just like you did Tony. You know, all, you know, sitting there and talking to Maddox about, you know, pitching and thinking about it and making a mind game of all of it was just right up my alley. But there were some other really great stories about Greg Maddox that I didn't, I didn't know, I don't think a lot of people knew and I thought it was really well done. So I would highlight that one for anybody to go find and watch. - Number four. My number four is going to be something from Netflix. It came out maybe a year or two ago, but we talked about it on the show. I felt that the untold Manti-Tale story was very interesting. - That was legit. - Because they had the person who, who, what's the word I'm like, catfished him. They had that exact person. And so you got them in the mind of the person who was catfishing Manti-Tale as well as getting what Manti-Tale was feeling throughout the whole thing. And I feel bad for Manti-Tale. - I thought he handled it pretty well. - Yeah, I did too. It doesn't seem like he, yeah, I would be very angry, but he seems like he's kind of at peace with what happened, but yeah, that was interesting. Chris or Tony, you're up. - Yeah, that was embarrassing for old Manti. - Is it me? - Yeah, you're up. Number four. - Number four, this one was sneaky good. And I think, I think as it happened before, you know, I was really engaged in sports that I knew some of it, but I didn't know all of it. And number four is another 30 for 30. It's Al Davis versus the NFL. And I didn't know, well, I mean, you knew there was some distrust and dislike between the two sides, but I didn't know it was that deep. Al Davis was running circles around the NFL. He really was. I mean, he got his way in most of it. And it kind of highlights in AI. This is like, they used AI with-- - Oh, that's that one. - Yeah, they used AI to kind of tell the story a little bit, but I thought this one was pretty good. It was sneaky good. Never four miles. - Yeah, I got to see that. I believe that, you know, in the same way that a lot of people thought that the Pete Rose situation contributed to the death of the commissioner at the time, our Bartia Mottie, it's the same thing with the Al Davis thing. That Al Davis, fighting with Pete Rosel, finally just was enough to cause the death of Pete Rosel, who was the commissioner at the time. Pete Rosel was a heavy smoker, but Al Davis, they say, pushed him over the top. My number four is going to be one that basically saved all of our lives. And I think we're all in the same category because in the summer of 2020, it was bleak. And we had nothing, unfortunately, except for a weekly feature called The Last Dance. And I don't know how we would have done this radio show without The Last Dance, frankly. We talked about it all week, every week, and every time a new episode came out. But it's a little bit of a Homer pick too, 'cause it was about my favorite team, you know, the '90s Chicago Bulls, but it was pretty cool. And it was great background and a lot of behind the scenes stuff that I think people liked and to have Michael Jordan kind of taking us all through that decade while he was sipping on how many scotches we'll never know. His eyes are getting low. Wasn't his eyes glassy? That's all I can think of when I remember. That's from those freaking Cuban cigars. Jordan was just glassy-eyed the entire time, but The Last Dance will be my number four. All right, well, I learned in The Last Dance that he didn't let Horace Grant have any fun. Yes, I know, it's the only thing you took from that. It's the only thing, literally, the only thing I took from it is for number three. My number three is something that Chris told me about years ago. It's called the Alpiness, and I can't remember the dude's name, but he was a free- This was interesting. He was like a free mountain climber who'd use no ropes to climb things, and he climbed the biggest mountains in the world with no ropes, and so they followed him around, and he, spoiler alert, he ends up dying in the end, but he was like a guy who didn't care if he died while climbing a mountain. Like, that's what he did. Did he die falling? He died in an avalanche. He got caught in an avalanche. He did not actually die trying to free climb a mountain. No, yeah, he didn't die falling off of a mountain, so. No, but he died in a, he got caught in an avalanche, but it's still on Netflix. It is, it's fine. You could find it somewhere. It's good. It's pretty interesting, and the thing I always watch, when I watch it, I always think, well, how about the guy who's the cameraman who's right next to him climbing up the hill, too? Right? And then they're sleeping on the side if I think it was half dome, or it, it, they put, it's pretty good. They put, cuts on the side of a mountain there. I can't even imagine. That's crazy. Yeah, this is asking for you. It really is. I sleepwalk. I mean, can you imagine me sleepwalking off of a mountain? I sleepwalk right off the mountain. Just like, oh, here we go. That wouldn't be good, scream. All right, Tony. This is three, two. This is three. This is three. I'm running out already. Catholics versus Convid. Another great 30, 30. Really good one. 'Cause, you know, again, this happened at a time where I was, I was alive, and I was well aware of things, but you don't know the depths in which some of this stuff kind of took place. This was a really good one. I mean, the kids, you know what I'm saying? Having the church made, and like, it was making so much of money off of 'em, too. I thought this was a really well told story about those two, you know, getting after each other. Oh, yeah. And nothing. I mean, no sports quote in history may match that of Jerome Brown. The Jerome Brown who would go on to be a great player for the Eagles, and then die, I believe in a, tragically in a car accident. But his line, when he was playing for the University of Miami, did the Japanese sit down with Pearl Harbor before they bombed 'em. It was an all-time classic line. 'Cause that was their whole point, was that they weren't gonna sit down and with Notre Dame or Penn State, or whoever it was they were playing, they didn't want to be at the same party as those guys before the game. - 100%. - Yeah, Miami was a little crazy back in those days. Number three for me, I'll go with hoop dreams. It was in my list, so, you know, no need to talk a whole lot more about it. It was quite good. I think everybody should see it at some time. - Number two. - My number two Netflix documentary from years ago, the earlier versions of this documentary, but it was called Blast Chance U, and it would follow these kids around those community college, and they were trying to play football, and get back on track in their careers and their lives. So like, if you were a kid who's very good at football, but you got kicked out of school because you're a grades or something, you go to this community college in like Mississippi, and they try to turn it around for you. So the first couple of seasons is that pretty good. - All right, very good. - Number two on my list is indeed the last dance. I mean, you guys said it, 2020 came around like, and we had to wait a little bit 'cause it didn't start until I wanna say like June, down that time, and so we had to like, we knew it was coming and we were like building it up, and it lived up to every little bit of hype that it was. We had so much time on our hands that we begin to not, people begin to not like Michael Jordan because he was too good and too maniacal about being a basketball player. I think a friendship got ruined in that process between Scottie Pippett and Michael Jordan. - Yeah, so be it. - We had a lot of time on our hands, but we certainly were fulfilled. - It was, and you know. - I think we had Casey Johnson like on every week. - We had him on weekly to break it down. The guy from Chicago, we had nothing else to do, and we had nothing else to do. (laughs) It was also a little insight into Phil Jackson and his amazing ability to handle people, including Rodman and letting him go to Las Vegas. - That's the best, that might've been one of the best stories. - That was incredible. - Calling Michael and his, hey, Dennis needs a break. Like what do you mean he needs a break? Like he needs to go to Vegas for a few days. - It's just like what? - Right in the middle of the season. - Yeah. - And they let him go too, and he went out and had a great time, came back and balled. - Yeah, and then, but they, when they got him back, remember he didn't come back when he was supposed to. - Oh, that had to go, he said he'd go, bring him back. - If he let Dennis go, we might not get him back. - They had to go bring him back. (laughs) - Number two for me is a personal favorite. And the reason is because it's one of the most amazing and emotional stories I ever had the luck to cover as a writer. And it was the 1989 Loyola Marymount basketball team, the one in which Hank gathers passed away, and they made the run to the elite eight, and the 30 for 30 episode is called "Guru of Go." And it's about Paul Westhead, who is a coach, and how we put together this system where the players ran up and down the floor, and Loyola scored 150 points a game. And if you don't believe me, he asked Steve Fisher, 'cause he was a victim of one of those games, when Loyola scored 145 points in an NCAA tournament game. But the story has everything, because not only does it have a dramatic run to the elite eight by a bunch of total underdogs, but it mixes in the fact that their star player died right before the NCAA tournament on the court during a game. - It was there in a conference tournament. - During the conference tournament, Hank gathers, who was an all-American player. So that's so emotional in a lot of different ways. It's called the "Guru of Go." It's a 30 for 30 if you never saw it. Maybe you don't know the story as much as I do, 'cause I was there and following it. It's quite amazing. - Number one. - Number one. - My number one is not just one documentary, but it's hard knocks as a whole, and I'm talking about the beginning of-- - The whole idea of hard knocks. - Yeah, the idea of giving us an inside look into an NFL training camp was something we never had before, and you get to see all these crazy stories of people trying to make the team getting cut on camera. I think we're the Ravens in Brian Bilic, the first team featured on the show. - I believe so, Brian Bilic likes to tell the story, yeah. - Oh, he does like this. - Yes, he does, yeah. - But yeah, hard knocks when it first started was amazing. I watched it every single season, but-- - Yeah, we all have, and you gotta give card knocks credit when my wife, who's a very casual sports fan at best, absolutely cannot miss an episode. I don't believe she's the only one. - No. - Yeah. - Best hard knocks moment is, I can't resist, but it might have been Raibou Cannon imitating Shannon Sharp as part of the-- - As a talent show? - Talent show, oh my God, it is, I would advise everybody YouTube it. He does a great Shannon Sharp, and if you can, and here Shannon's offering you a head, and his kind of mannerisms, he does them all. It was a funny, funny thing. Number one on my list is the all-time classic Celtics versus Lakers. Best of enemies is what it was called. It covered all of the, what, '60s, '70s, into the '80s, and how Larry Bird and Matt Johnson changed it. The best part on that is magic telling the story about coming back to Boston. I think it was when he hit the baby sky hood. - Oh, yes. - And my man in the airport was like, Larry's gonna kill you. (laughing) - I don't know, I love the whole documentary too. My favorite part was when Michael clothesline Rambas, and Rambas went to the line for two free throws. - Two free throws, that's it, that's all he got. - That's all it would. - The all-time fouls in the history of the NBA. That's a great one. All right, I'm gonna do a little history lesson for everybody out there who doesn't know of this documentary, 'cause I do believe I enjoyed it a lot. (upbeat music) - Well, sometimes I have to. I have to enlighten the people out there. Because this is considered one of the greatest documentaries of all time, and I think everyone should see it. Who's a sports fan? It's called When We Were Kings. It came out in the middle of 1996. It was 22 years after Muhammad Ali fought George Frazier, not George Frazier, George Foreman, sorry. Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, rumble in the jungle, 1974 heavyweight title bout. That was the one where Ali did the rope adult for eight rounds, and Foreman punched himself out, and then Ali cracked him and took the title and a shocking upset. But the documentary is way more than that. Any documentary that includes Muhammad Ali's preparation for an event is obviously gonna be not only interesting, but political, and mind-bending, and George Foreman on the other side. It was a movie star quality documentary. I recommend to all of you, even you Scrabby, it's called When We Were Kings. - I'm interested. - You learn something. You might learn something. - Say politics, I'm all about it. - Yes, you are, George. Stepping opposite. (laughs) - For the second time. - You are today. - All right, that's our countdown today. Enjoy some of those documentaries. If you haven't seen them, you'll like them. Coming up next, you'll like a little round of Chris vs. the fans, 833-280973. We're playing, hopefully you're winning when Gwen and Chris returns. All right, kicking off four o'clock hour. They all matter. Padre's are currently a half game ahead of the Diamondbacks. They are three games up on both the Braves on the Mets. That's really not a lot of room for air now, right? You got to get right back to it after that tough loss last night. The Mets are playing, let me see, Cincinnati tonight. Great, at home, Mets have been playing great. Atlanta's home to Toronto. So, hmm, although Atlanta did lose to the Rockies last night. So they did. And you know who pitched that game for the Rockies? Rained all the little pet, or for the Rockies, Austin Gomber. Our old guy, Austin Gomber. I mean, the guy never loses a game, except for every other game that he pitches. I guess so. But he pitched well last night. Dodgers are home to Cleveland tonight, if you're wondering. Don't worry, Chris. I saw what show here with Tony, look like when he walked into Dodger Stadium today. So MLB just keeps. Such a hater. MLB just keeps forcing these things on me. Not forcing you. The thing is, is he's going to be the first 50-50 player in the history is the most popular player on the planet. But I don't need a new notification when he sneezes. Do you need to see LeBron James walk into the arena? I don't either, but they show it all the time. You know, it's what I'm saying. The rubbing elbows with the big boy. Scrappy. MLB put this out on their own Twitter account. What, like, I can understand if it was a Dodgers account, but it was major league baseball. OK, major league baseball. Let's see, finishing. Arizona tonight's at Houston. So Diamondbacks will be in tough. Dodgers have a tough weekend series as well. I'll see what happens in the crazy world of the 2024 major league baseball season, where nothing is as it seems. It's true, especially last night when the Padres were victorious over the Tigers until they weren't. I was going to say what? Do I need to correct you? No, they weren't. Baseball coverage in '97 through the fan, presented by T-Mobile, switch to T-Mobile. You can get tons of benefits and still save on every plan versus AT&T and Verizon. And look, if you don't want to play, hang up. Hang up and open it for somebody else, but we are playing for pride only today. Scrabby took the prize himself. This was the prize. If you're watching on YouTube, you're watching the show on YouTube, Scrabby's got a new shirt on today that his best friend got for him. My best friend, meaning Chris, I love it. Your best friend in the whole world got you this t-shirt. Scrabby loves horror t-shirts, so I got him a little horror t-shirt. That was actually supposed to be the prize today, but Scrabby took it for himself. It was nice. It says, I like horror movies and like three other people, which is hilarious, because it's true. You liked it, so I got it for you. It's true. But yeah, it's going to be a pride thing today. So, you know, just the way it goes. We're working on our September gift, as it were. Yeah, it's not gone. They're just kind of-- We'll have you going back to Las Vegas before you know it. But for today, it's all about the pride and Chris versus the fans. [MUSIC PLAYING] If you had one shot, one opportunity to take down the human almanac himself, how would he do? Now is your time. Listen to me, this guy, stages. Now is your opportunity to win a prize. Well, I hope you know what you're in for. Chris versus the fans starts now on 97.3, the fan. Real quick, all you fans, the football players. Justin Herbert is active. Was active? Active for week one. For week one, I don't-- Was it really up for debate? No. For other fantasy football players, and I will say this, if this is your fantasy quarterback, you do not have a good team, but Russell Wilson was limited in practice for the Steelers today. He may not start, which means Justin Fields starts-- I guess so. --in Atlanta. I guess so. Here's my guess. Justin Fields starts. We never see Russell Wilson again. That's what-- It really wouldn't bother me at all. Justin Fields is hoping. Yeah, that's what he's hoping for sure. All right, we'll get to those NFL news and notes. Yeah, we got some more stuff for you later. I took it in a weird direction. You have to make it through three questions. Each question will make it-- or get more difficult. If you get the question right, you move on. If you get it wrong, and Chris gets it right, you're eliminated. But if Chris gets it wrong, then you move on to the next question, or you win. If you are a first-time player, let us know. And you get the first question for free today. But I would encourage all of you to save that for when there is a prize. And Chris versus the fan is presented by SD Fat Loss. Lose 20 to 30 pounds in just 60 days. Visit SDfatloss.com to schedule your free consultation. All right, so let's get started here with our first contestant. We're going to go with first name I saw was Bill. Bill, hello. Hello, Bill. Hey, guys, how are you doing today? Pretty good, sir. Pretty good, Bill. Here we go. Question name. Did they have a call you Wild Bill, or just not that wild? Well, my wife does. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Maybe more info than we needed, but it was still funny. Hopefully, your wife doesn't call you Buffalo, Bill. That's a whole different thing. Ah, Bill. See, he got a laugh. I got a laugh. Chris rolls his eyes, and I got a laugh from-- all right, here we go. Question number one. Let's see. What was the count when Parker Meadows hit the Grand Slam for the Tigers last night? Three, two. Three, two is correct. Yeah, it was down to the nitty gritty. Don't cry. I still cry both of us. Everybody is. Everybody is. It was so shocking. No doubt. My jaw sat-- like sat there with my mouth. I was like, that really happened, OK? Yeah. Here we go. Question number two, Bill. What NFL player that's a non-quarterback has the most touchdown scored in one season? Non-quarterback NFL player with the most touchdowns in one season. Ever. Like Damian Commonson? That's correct, Bill. He got a nice job. 31 touchdowns. L.T. broke that record a while ago. It's held up. Yeah, it was 2008. Would be my guess on that. I remember the Chargers went to San Francisco to play the 49ers. I was out the game. L.T. scored four touchdowns, and the 49ers didn't even have a shot. I'll be honest with you. Of all of the athletes I've met working in San Diego, and I know Tony's dad is way at the top of the list. And there's nobody going to beat him ever. L.T. is one of the greatest guys of all time. Yeah. One of the greatest guys. I mean, he interviewed every interview. He just always had fun with it. Come on in and tell me I see you. There he is. There he is. Very good, Scraver. I really liked L.T. Yeah, he was great. Yeah. Question number three. [MUSIC PLAYING] That's one I think is difficult. But before last night, Robert Suarez's last blown save came against which American league team. Whic. Oh, good. Great. Let's take Toronto. Toronto. [BUZZER] Stay there, bro. Oh, man. You know, he was on my fantasy team all year. Robert Suarez. Oh, OK, yes. I traded him recently. Oh, so you stopped paying attention? So I stopped paying attention. But I'm saying this happened before I traded him. Oh. So I probably had some anguish along with this particular blown save you're talking about. Oh, gosh. You know this. But I can't remember. Oh. So I read somewhere where he hadn't-- wasn't it that the-- this was an amazing statistic, by the way. Sorry, I'm stalling. It's OK. They hadn't lost a game when they turned the lead over to their bullpen since June 2nd. That's unbelievable. That is unbelievable. For any team to be able to do that. You think it would just happen. July, August, September 6, or three months was the last time their bullpen let a lead get away and they lost the game. That's why we shouldn't be so mad about last night. We really shouldn't be. I don't know. The American League team, they just played a minute. I'm-- yeah! I don't know. Just give it a bill. All right, Bill, you went for pride. I'm sorry, Bill. No, Bill. It's a pride day. You know, we should do it. Bob, I enjoy doing it. All right, thanks, Bill. Appreciate that. Don't hang up on him yet. Stay there, Bill. To stay, why don't you take his info down. And when we get the monthly prize, which we'll probably have next week, you know, wouldn't Bill then can't we throw him in the hopper of the qualifier? Or was that skirting the rules? I don't know if that is a part of the rules since you announced it on the race. Bill, if that-- I'm going to check into that, Bill. And I'm going to see if we can make something happen. Because I know you call in every once in a while. So we'll try to get you in, Bill. But thank you very much for playing. Have a good weekend. And hopefully there's some positive Padre. Who was the answer, by the way? OK, well, the last Bloomsave happened on July 26. That's the last time Robert Sorrows blew a save against the Orioles. The Oohs at Baltimore. June 2nd, June 2nd back now, that was a game against Kansas City. He didn't pitch. He didn't pitch in that game. But that was the last time they had a lead. Oh. And the bullpen lost the game. That had been that Sunday game because he pitched the night before. Right. It was a Sunday game against Kansas City. I think a strata was trying to-- let me see. I don't know. I think Colick came in for that game where they had to bring in Suarez and Colick gave up-- No, that was the 11 to 8 game on a Friday night where Colick gave up all those runs. And then Suarez had to pitch on the Friday. Yuki Matsui lost the Bloomsave on June 2nd. In Kansas City, they gave up 3 in the 9th and lost 4 to 3. So that's-- you know who pitched before Yuki Matsui in that game against KC on June 2nd? Are they on the roster still? No. Angel de Los Santos. He's not on the Yankees roster either. I don't know what roster he's on nowadays. I don't even know if he's on a roster anymore. You know, the pot-- the pottery bullpen. He's-- oh, Chris. What? Is he pitching? I think he is, but I just got to confirm this. Yes. He is a Chicago white song. Oh, boy. That's-- that's not cool. That hurts. Don't do that to my man. And yell. Oh, that hurts. Now, here's-- here's what a point I wanted to make before we go to break. This is unbelievable. The pottery bullpen. Look at how it is now, OK? Just think of who they have now. All the names. Here's who they don't have anymore in the bullpen. Angel de Los Santos. Johnny burrito. Steven Colick. I guess, you know, Logan Gillespie's back down. Tom Cosgrove, I think, finally came back up. But then he got sent back down, I think. Right. My point is, the Padres were counting on guys back in April, May, and June that really weren't very good to pitch the seventh eighth inning ahead of Suarez. Now they have Jason Adam and Tanner Scott. They're doing OK. They're a whole lot better. They're doing OK. Yeah. First time last night that-- Well, it was first time a lot of things last night. Martin Perez hadn't lost the start. Tanner Scott had not been in a game that they lost. They hadn't lost the lead with a bullpen since June the 2nd. Anyway, a lot of stuff. Get those out of the way. That's fine. They're back to you. Business is usual tonight. I'm kind of glad we, you know, they've got to win tonight because the fans are going to get restless. I know how you fans are. You're going to get all-- you're going to get all worried. But they've done this. This is what-- you know, they lose maybe two at the most. Every team loses a few in a row. But the Padres aren't allowed to. Well, because everything's going so nice right now. So swimmingly. So swimmingly right now. We don't want it to end. Yeah. Maybe waiting for that shoe to drop. All right, a couple of big baseball moves were made today on the transaction wire. Some big names are coming back. And some big names are going down. We'll talk about what we mean when we return after traffic. [MUSIC PLAYING] Like a snack during the break. Yes, you do. I just eat my little kind bar here. The thing that makes this throat close up every time he eats it. Anyway, sometimes I misjudge it, and I take a bite too close to the return to the show. I can't even put my head down. You know what I mean? Can't even do it. I guess the show's starting, and I'm still having finished my bite. So I apologize for that. Trust me, everybody. This is what keeps Scrappy up at night. True. It's kind of stuff drives him absolutely nuts. And I don't know why, but it does. Yeah, it does. And I'm probably too old to change. Because you're not going to have to change. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Yeah, you can, but the old dog has to be willing to learn them. You know what Lucky's doing now, Chris? Because he's a young dog, so he can teach him too. He can sit, and then I tell him to shake. And then he gets the thing after the shake. But I said, sit. And now he does the shake every time I try. We've got to go with the shake, because then I get the treat. He's like every dog. As soon as they realize that they can get a treat by shaking, they don't need to learn anything else. Just go shake. Do you know what I say? People will give you stuff. Do you know what I say when I shake his hand or his paw? Oh, my little man. No, I say, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. Well, you're hilarious, dog owner, you are. A couple of baseball notes. This is an interesting one, because I think we think that we're the only team here in San Diego that fans are clamoring at the GM to do certain things. And the GM doesn't always do it. And AJ doesn't do what we want. And sometimes he does-- I mean, this year's different, because AJ is having a great GM season. He is, yeah. But we know-- you know what I mean? Yankees have an issue right now in New York. Alex Verdugo has been mediocre all season long. It's hitting 236. Got him from the Red Sox. Remember in a trade or something? Yeah, it was a trade. 11 home runs, 236 average. He's been OK, but you know, Verdugo was much better back in the day with the Dodgers. Anyway, the Yankees have a phenom at AAA. You may remember this guy. The Martian, they call him Jason Dominguez. Yeah. Well, he's already got seven home runs. Yeah. And he just homered the other day, like two days in a row. And everybody wants him back. And Brian Cashman said, no, we're good. I said, Jason's doing everything he needs to do right now in the minors. And Verdugo's playing a little bit better. So the evaluations that we're having say that giving us the best chance to win as of right now is staying with what we've got. Yankee fans, less than pleased. I would be with the Yankee fans. I know. The point is, is it sounds like all the other fans. We have no patience of any kind. And every game matters. And don't forget, the Yankees are going back and forth for first place right now with the Orioles. So people want Jason Dominguez. Remember, he was the-- I don't know for sure. But I'm pretty sure that AJ Preller asked for him in the Juan Soto trade, even if he had no chance to get him. He wanted to get him, though. He wanted to get him. Because Jason Dominguez is like the superstar, right? He's 21. He's going to be incredible. For now, he stays in the minor leagues. Houston Astros get some good news today. And aren't we all happy when the Astros get good news? That good news is that Kyle Tucker, one of their star, middle of the order bats, has returned from the 60-day injured list, three plus months, which was a small fracture in his right shin. He returns. Tucker's been an all-star each of the last three seasons. He's a power hitting threat, et cetera. Had 19 home runs, even before he got hurt. So the Astros just got a whole lot better today. Another team that got a whole lot better today, the Diamondback, sorry to tell you. But could tell Marte is back after his injury stint, 10-day injury list. He's been activated. Marte missed 16 games. He ranks third in the NL, 298 batting average. He's got 30 homers. He was making a run for MVP before he got hurt. Now that case is being taken up for him by Francisco Lindor, who is kind of trying to chase down show Aotani. I'm sorry, you can't hit 262 and be an MVP. Lindor? Yeah. Well, Marte's not hitting 260, he's hitting 298. No, that's what I'm saying, Lindor it. Let me see what he's hitting right now. So that's a big deal. Arizona's only half game, as you know, behind the Padres. In that wildcard race, they get their best player back today, really. Could tell Marte. The only 275 is a lot better. The only good news I could say for the Padres on that is that the Diamondbacks got there. One of their best players back. So did the Padres earlier this week with Fernando. So at least we kind of matched it. One team got considerably worse today. It may cost them a playoff position. We'll see Philadelphia Phillies had to put third baseman Alex Boehm on the 10-day because of a left-hand strain. He's been out for about a week already. You know, Phillies are trying to hold on competing with the Dodgers for the top seed. But at the same time, they're also trying to hold off the Brewers to make sure they get a buy in the first round. Bad news for Philadelphia. Boehmous hitting 290's got 89 ribs. Fissing the national league. Stakes, yeah. Is Kyle Swarber just like your favorite player who like shouldn't be anybody around here's favorite player. I mean, he's hovered against the Padres a thousand times. He's hit the ball over Petco Park. Yeah, but I just love Kyle Swarber. I mean, I know he's he's when he hits one. He really hits it. And I love the way it waddles around the bases. He's the closest thing we'll ever get to see to the bad B&O. I just get a kick out of Kyle Swarber. I'm sorry. He's, you know, I don't have any reason to root for him necessarily. But he I, you know, he's kind of I like him. And when he gets going, he puts together a nice little thing. Three home runs earlier this week. Came back the next day with a lead off homer. I mean, when he starts bombing him, forget it. All right, big five is coming up next as Gwyn and Chris continues. Stay with us. It's that time of the show when we check on the latest in sports, only the most important topics and questions are brought to light. Stop what you're doing and listen. These new stories will astound and amaze you. The one, the only. Oh, my God. Who the hell cares? The big five starts now on 97th Ray, the fan. Now, I know we've talked about it a bunch today, but so we're going to start off with a Robert Swar is question. And it's not about whether or not he should be removed as closer as we've already said. It's ridiculous to think number five. But this is a question I got from someone on X, and I've seen it other places. So I'm going to bring it to the show. Robert Swar is his entrance is the topic of this. It's cool and everything. But some fans think it may be a little too much for him. They aren't sure that it fits his personality. Now, no one really knows him, but they were saying he seems like a quiet guy who just goes about his work and with little to no fanfare, and he's cool at that. So this whole entrance thing, maybe, is throwing him off. Chris, do you think Robert Swar is open? It's throwing him off. Has it thrown him off the 30 times that he saved a game this year? I think they started this recently. Yeah. Well, he's had plenty of saves since they started this. First of all, I was a tad-- I brought up his entrance about a month ago, comparing it to Trevor's. And I thought it was lagging in comparison to Trevor's. But then again, I thought about this. And Trevor's was so good that maybe nothing will ever quite live up to that. I really like Robert Swar's is open now. And the fact that the fans have gotten to be part of it by when the lights go down, they get the lights on their phone out. And when he's running in from center field, that shot of him running in with all of the lights on and the darkness. It's pretty impressive, pretty exciting. Actually, he's had nothing to do with his performance at all. And it wouldn't obviously even be a question if it weren't for one pitch that was hit last night. Tony, I'm afraid to even ask. I don't even want to dignify his question. Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. I will explain to you that I kind of thought-- You know, it doesn't seem like Robert Swar's. I'm not singing the effects of this video. Yeah, right. I have at least on multiple occasions thought about recording it from here because it is so cool. But then I get to it too late, and then it's like that. It's over. It looks good. I mean, they have the guy that runs-- I love the guy who runs in behind him. The camera guy? The camera guy who runs in behind him. And then they go to that camera, and then all of a sudden, all of a sudden, it looks like you're kind of him running in, and you're getting a little feel for what it would look like to him. I got to tell you, I mean, I'm not a rock star or anything, but that looks pretty good. You know, it looks like a little rock star type concert thing. So I'm sure he likes it. I'm sure that, you know, it doesn't have any effect on his pitching, but it gets everybody ramped up, and I hope they keep-- you know, I'm sure they'll keep doing it. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Number four. Got through that question, everybody. Barely. Barely, he says. Where did my sheet go? It's about Isaiah likely. I know that. It's about how he caught a seemingly winning touchdown. But, you know, the Ravens, they had that touchdown overturned because of a toe of Isaiah likely. And Patrick Mahomes, after the game, had a little bit of advice for Isaiah likely. And that would be to wear white cleats next time, which is actually a pretty good piece of advice, because his cleats are black, and you could clearly see that he was stepping on the line. And if he wore white cleats, obviously, it would make the rest have a hard time determining if it was out or not. So, Tony, do we now see players across the league where white cleats for this reason? Um, I don't think so. I think guys like to wear cleats that they look good and feel good in. These ones happen to be black, but they also happen to go with what they will wear. And so, I think-- you're going to see some guys maybe go that route, but I would say the large majority of guys will continue to pick style over substance in this case, because, you know, ultimately, some of these guys will be like, well, he could have done a better job getting his whole foot in as opposed to just the toes. Yeah. By the way, I've seen this call go the other way with very same exact type of scenario. So, this might be the one of the flaws they have in their specific insta-replay. Yeah, no, I don't think guys will, uh, will I go full? Let me wear white shoes and make it more difficult on the referee. Chris? Yeah, um, Tony's the shoe guy, uh, and he knows this way. He knows this way better than I do, but I agree with him. Players are always going to go for comfort and looks over, you know, what would help them the most. Um, you're right. I think it's an interesting notion that Patrick Mahomes, who's the opponent, brings up. And if he had, because if he had white cleats on it really would have been a lot tougher to overturn that call, whereas with the black cleats, it was clear to everybody, even if the NFL or the refs or whoever the conspiracy people are wanted this game, you know, to go to overtime or be decided by a two point play, they couldn't. I mean, everyone could clearly see that, you know, his toe was on the end line. So I like the notion I was a little surprised afterwards that, you know, Lamar Jackson kept talking about how I thought this was a touchdown. I thought it was a touchdown. What are you looking at? There's no way it was a touchdown. I mean, you know, I understand why you wanted it to be a touchdown, but unfortunately it wasn't. It was, uh, what it was was another unbelievable finish to an NFL game, which we talked about earlier. And this is what the league seems to get every single timeout. And this is why we all watch. Yes. It was very exciting. The other thing I noticed too on the play guys, the replay has gotten absurdly good now. I mean, how many camera angles did they have a lot showed his toe being on the line, like five different angles and they're like super HD right. So there is nowhere to hide anymore. I mean, they, they're, they're going to be able to spot it. Number three. So another game would be, uh, or another game. Sorry about that. The other thing in the game that I want to talk about is when Patrick Mahomes, uh, was quote unquote pushed out of bounds by Rokwan Smith early in the game. Now my homes dropped to the ground, like a sack of potatoes after Smith kind of sort of pushed him in the back a little bit. They didn't call the flag or they didn't throw the flag. They didn't say it was a penalty. He said after the game, it was a great no call that's a Rokwan Smith because the ref, you know, he wasn't actually trying to finish the play out of bounds. He was trying to let off and then Patrick Mahomes went down like a sack of potatoes. I was like, yeah, Chris, should quarterback flopping counteract a late hit out of bounds? Ha. Let's go. Let's put 15 yards on Patrick Mahomes for un-sportsman like I was thinking that, but I love it. I kind of don't, I don't hate it. I will say this, somewhere there was a Cincinnati bangle fan and or former player for the bangles that was like, where was this no call when we needed it in the AFC championship game a couple of years ago? Oh, yeah. Everybody remembers it was the shove out of bounds that set the Chiefs up for the field goal that put them into the Super Bowl. It's a slippery slope, right? I mean, if you tell, if you actually put an un-sportsman like penalty in for a quarterback for flopping when he gets shoved, you're running the risk of some crazy stuff. Like, you know, you'd like to see Patrick, I mean, look, you got to sell it. If you're Patrick Mahomes under the current rules, you got to sell it. You got to try to get your flag. Right. I'm going to do, I'm just going to give the official some credit, you know, for making the right call. You know, a lot of times these guys do fall for it. It's like wide receivers, you know, trying to draw past interference penalty. I mean, you have to be really, really careful out there. And sometimes before you throw the flag, but I'm going to say no, but I don't hate your, I don't hate the direction you're going. Okay. Wow. Tony, should a quarterback flopping counteract the late hit out of bounds? I don't hate, I don't hate your idea. However, I do think it's a slippery slope. I think when, you know, in that particular case, he was out of bounds. My man, Ray Kwan Smith put his hands on his shoulder beds, but never pushed him. I don't blame homes for trying to sell the 15. It's work for him in the past. So, you know, it's part of, it's part of the game, it's gamesmanship. Now, it sucks when it's your team that is the one that ends up paying the price for it. But this is a part of the sport, you know, unfortunately, I mean, they know that maybe tricking a referee into throwing a flag can result in something that helps their team. It's not just football. We see it in basketball, we see it in the elements of baseball guy claims he got hit by a bitch. He's like, fake limping and, you know, make it, those ones are hard to overturn too. So, you know, I think this is, this is just part of it. I think in the NBA, it got to the point where it was getting a little ridiculous. I mean, it was getting to be on almost every foul guys were falling down. So they had to feel like they had to do something. But I would say this and I don't know if you agree with me, Tony, watching the NBA and college, which has the flopping rule. And by the way, high school is putting the flopping rule in, making it almost impossible on us referees in basketball, but they don't get it right 90% of the time anyway. It's a really difficult one to call. So, even though they've got the rule in the NBA, I think they only are able to get it right about, you know, half the time it's bad. It's the bad acting jobs that they end up docking the obvious ones, where it's like, bro, that he was like 15 feet away from you, he jumped across the whole floor over here. No, that's a tough call for sure. I mean, when Shaquille O'Neal was coming down the lane, how could you not get knocked onto the floor? No, you're not supposed to call a flop on some guy. No, you can't because you were getting run over by a truck. You know, so. That would be scary. That would be like calling a defensive back for flopping when Derek Henry runs into them. You know, it's not right. That would be scary if Shaquille is just running at you in his heyday. Number two. Tom Brady makes his Fox football debut this Sunday. No one really knows what we're going to get. There were no preseason warmups saying there are restrictions put on Tom Brady because he's a partial owner in the NFL, so he's not even allowed to go into production meetings with the players to find out information and anything like that. But Tony, what do you expect from Tom Brady in his first game as an analyst? I don't know that he'll actually enjoy this job as much as he thinks he does with all these stipulations on it, right? Because one of the fun parts about Tom Brady is like you get to go down and get the inside access. Tom's people. Right. He's still pretty fresh from the game. So he may be able to do that for a little bit and it still be okay by him, but I mean, what I do know about Tom Brady is he's insanely driven and I can't imagine him like kind of halfway doing this job, you know what I'm saying? So to me, he's either going to want to be an owner or he's going to want to do this. And my guess is probably a little more money at being an owner and so I think eventually that's what it's going to come down to because I can't see him just kind of doing this job and not being able to like get down there and go to some of those meetings and when you get to meet the head coach and you get to talk to him, let me just say he's going to have to, some of those he's not going to be able to do, right? Yeah. Yeah. That doesn't seem as fun to me. I'm just saying. So I don't know what to expect. I think he'll be good. I think he's Tom Brady. He knows the game pretty well. He's very well spoken and articulate. So I think he'll be able to do the job in itself and do it well, but I don't know how long he's going to last with those type of stipulations. Chris, I think it's a fair point, you know, I mean, we're going to expect a lot from Tom Brady because we all know how much money he's making, right? I mean, they've advertised it, you know, the kind of, you know, contract he got to come in here with no hundred something million dollars with no experience of any kind and supplanting somebody who we all enjoyed, you know, by the end, scraping didn't like him at the beginning. So, yeah, by the end, Greg Olson, you know, people liked him. And now, you know, here comes Brady with no experience at all. So we're going to be expecting a lot, but I also think Tom Brady's going to expect a lot. I mean, this guy doesn't do anything half ass. I wouldn't expect him to put himself in the position where he would, you know, look anything less than very, very good. But having said that, I think the fact that he can't get access is going to, like Tony said, it's going to, it's going to be a big factor. He's not going to have the same insight. He might be able to guess on a few things, but he's not going to know. And he's not going to have this be able to bring us the same insight that other guys are going to. So yeah, I think he's going to have to decide, does he want to be an owner or does he want to be on TV? Because I really don't think he can be both and do it, you know, do it well. Tony, forgive me if I'm speaking out of school. But one of the reasons you love your job that you have now is because you get to stay in the baseball world and you're talking with the guys and you feel like you're a part of things. I think that is so valuable and you being able to do your job right. Now, it doesn't mean you need to have a conversation with an art sport. We plan every day, right? So I don't need to go down there and have a conversation every day with them. And they probably get tired of you. So they go, here comes Tony. I don't know. We have a conversation with you every day. One day. And we get it. We'll squash the bug again. So, you know, you pick your spots and, you know, you let the kind of season develop and you pick, you know, new things that are developing as the season goes on, you go down there and you have these conversations. But I wouldn't be able to, well, I'm almost 10 years removed from last time I was on a field. I don't know that at this point, especially the way the game has changed since 2015, that I would be able to talk to the people who are listening in a way that is compelling and that makes them want to listen. If I wasn't able to, if I was just like showing up to the field doing this show with you guys and then just staying in this booth like every day all day, that, I mean, beside it being prison, I would, you feel further and further away. And so, you know, as I said, he's what, three years removed now, Thomas, four years, three years. He's still pretty close. You know, he's still, you know, guys are still, they still know who Tom Brady is at his point. He'll be fine. But I think as he gets further and further away, it's going to be tougher. And I think for him from a personal standpoint, he's not going to, he's not going to enjoy this much. Do we know a game he's on this weekend? Because I don't know that we get his game necessarily. We'll get it on the red zone, Chris. Well, yes, you'll hear some of this stuff on that zone. His last year was 2022. So this is his third, this is going. It's the national game of the week this week that he's Dallas Cleveland, maybe. I think that's it. But let me make sure I don't. I think that's it. That's it. I think that's it. I think that's it. You see. Well, let me just add to that, Don Shravey, the Dallas Cleveland game is not being aired in San Diego. So we won't be able to see his full performance this week. I guess I was reading earlier to that he was calling practice games like all season or all off seasons. So he's been doing this. But he's not going to be saying practice is practice, but you got to have the insight at that level and he's not as much as he knows he's not going to know everything now. Keep going. I'm going to try to find this game. That's all right. We'll keep going on. What? We already had something more to say. No, I'm good. We don't have anything else. You see, I've got nothing more to say. It is cowboy's rounds. Cowboy's rounds. Thank you. I move on. He expects to the defensive game, according to this. Our Dave is back here throwing his hands up as you mentioned the cowboys and the cowboys. How are the cowboys on the game of the week? I mean, really? Oh, what a shocker. What a shocker. We really want to see cowboys browns every time they play the cowboys or the browns. Exactly. That's the point. Ridiculous. We have an NFL game tonight, guys. It's starting to hit pretty soon. Green Bay, baby. Let's go. Let's go. Number one, side note, you can't make the reporters can't use X down there. So they're having issues with communicating to the masses. Oh, that's right. It just can't be. Yeah. So they, oh, it's banned in that country. And some players are sending things back to their fans, their wives to tweet for them from the United States. That's razzle. I think the NFL messed up on this one tonight. Well, here, let me get into this question, Chris. The NFL, as we just said, they're just going to play the first game tonight in South America between the Packers and the Eagles, that they're going to play five games abroad this season with eight expected by next season as it looks to increase its revenue sources and commissioner. Thank God the NFL needs is increasing its revenue because I was getting a little worried about them. Commissioner Roger Goodell has said he prioritizes international growth for the league over anything else. So Chris, I know, I believe I know what you're going to answer by. How much is too much? Well, I'll tell you when it's going to be too much. And we're getting ready for a new season. And they say this year, there's going to be 12 games actually played on American soil. And the rest are going to be played abroad when we can start counting the number of games that are played here, then they'll have gone too far. But that's a good point. I just, you know, the whole this whole thing with the dangerous, you know, the green coloring. And I just don't know that anyone's going to be comfortable down there tonight. Did the green, you're not supposed to wear green, even though the NFL swears, that's not a big deal. But other people do swear it is a big deal. Everyone swears that if you wear green in Sao Paulo, Brazil, you become a target of violence. Oh, I don't think Tony was on the big fire, maybe you didn't dare yesterday, was saying that he doesn't even want to go. And then he backtrack quickly after the team tried to talk to him. But they were saying that if you if you wear green in that particular art of the world, you become a target yet for violence and that we were the joke is, is that the both the Packers and the Eagles were green. It was just the, is this rolling around on X? It's not like a rumor. Remember when Josh Jacobs told said that the NFL told him that and then the NFL came out and said, no, we didn't tell him that. But the only reason Josh Jacobs knew about green had to be because the NFL told him that, right? It was a thing. It was a thing, Tony. It was not a scrapey made up. Thank you. Finally, I'm not, I'm not. I'm sorry. It wasn't insinuating that you made that up. I'm not saying that. I'm saying that I don't know who I just would like to know where the sources came from. Is this from Josh Jacobs, basically saying that we can't wear green and then everybody assuming that they'll tell him that? It's Josh Jacobs heard it from somewhere that he felt compelled enough to tell everybody he was nervous about going down there. And from there, that's kind of taken on a bit of a life of it because the Eagles are wearing their black jerseys. Oh, they are. Oh, so they did mess around with the great Eagles were why I read that they were white with black pants, black helmet. Oh, there we go. Okay. Packers are wearing great. I guess jerseys mean the top, right? Yeah. Jersey's or the uniform is the whole ensemble. Jersey's are the, yeah, Jersey's is another one who were rat in this. Well, Tony, what is it about too much? Um, we're probably at the, we're probably, I think we're probably at the limit right now. Ooh. I think that's where I don't. Why do you need to have more games than you have there now? Eight games this year is a lot next year, next year, next year, five, five, five, five, five. No. All right. Eight of eight will be the max then. That should be the max. I don't think it will be the max. I mean, pretty soon we're going to be going to countries that are, you know, we've never even we're not familiar with at all. Yeah. Okay, from Nepal, Catman, I welcome back. It's a happy hour time here on Gwen and Chris final, a couple of segments together here on this Friday. Chris. Hello, Tony Gwen, Jr. at Petco Park. Of course, he's getting ready for a nice broadcast. Padres taking on the San Francisco Giants, he got there, sir in town. That's gravy is alongside here in the Odyssey Palace studios, Sam Levitt will have the pre game show, eco water, so Cal pre game show coming up in about 30 minutes. And then it's Jesse and Tony with Michael King pitching for the Padres. Padres, of course, are coming off. I don't think there's a whole lot of argument. They're toughest loss of the season last night. A lot of times you don't like to make blanket statements like that, but when it's three nothing and there's two outs and there's two strikes and the other guy hits a grand slam and you lose four to three, I'd say that's pretty painful. That's a punch in the gut as we said. So you know, how do the Padres shake it off? We'll find out starting tonight, they begin play a half game up on Arizona for the top wild card spot, three games ahead of the Mets, three games ahead of the Braves. So you know, look, it's still tight with 19 games to go. Pottery is also not, although I don't think people are thinking about it anymore. Our five games back of the Dodgers. Here's something though that I think is a pot. We talked about everything that was, you know, tough about last night. Yeah. We've already addressed the fact that if, you know, if you want to take Suarez out as the closer, then you might as well bench Manny because he went 0 for 4 and Fernando and Profarce should be nowhere near the field. He hasn't had a hit really since the all-star break. Suarez had a bad game and they lost and if he has another game or two that are like that, yeah, you're going to have to do something. But for the time being absurd to, you know, be thinking about, well, we've got to change everything up and there's no need to, you know, do any panicking either. But you know, if you're a Padres fan, panicking is always just around the corner. I guess it is, right? It's always there. But here's something that I saw last night at the ballgame that I think other people have already mentioned in a little bit. I don't know that it's been out there in a, in a, in more of a widespread thing. And I really think it's an example of why, one of the reasons why this pottery team is as good as they are. This night their head won nothing, Jake Croninworth gets a double in the second inning. Zander comes up, it's a home run. I watched Zander and Croninworth go around the bases. Croninworth gets a cross home plate and Zander's about a base or so behind him coming around. Croninworth is, you know, clapping a little bit, but the first thing that Croninworth did after he touched home plate was not jump up and down and say, look at me. He did not, you know, do a sky writing, like do the thing where you like hits his chest and then points to the sky or, or, you know, wait, he went over to the on deck hitter Jackson Merrill and he gave him a quick scouting report on the picture. He always does. Yeah. Well, is it then after Jackson Merrill kind of nodded and said, Hey, okay, then Croninworth went back and congratulated Bogart's on the home run. And then they did their celebration thing. This isn't brand new to baseball. It's not never been done before. To me, though, it just gives you an idea of what the attitude, the mental makeup of this team is. Yeah. It's about everyone helping everybody else. We talked about it the other day. When Hagashyoka got pinch hit for in the ninth inning or eighth inning against the Tigers, I think a lot of guys would be very disappointed that they didn't get a chance to bat. Hagashyoka went in the dugout and started talking to Elias Diaz about how to catch and, you know, handle the staff. Yep. That's what this team is made of. It's a good thing. They care about helping each other. That is a fairly uncommon thing now in sports in the world of look at me, point at me. It's all about me. It's not with this team. And I don't think Croninworth's the only guys ever done that. I think other guys have done it this year. I've seen them and I'm sure there's guys in other teams like this isn't the only incident I've ever seen of this. But it was just a really good example to me of why, you know, you should like this team, you know, it's just another thumbs up. It's, you're right about everything because last year, I can't necessarily say that no one was helping each other, but it didn't have the same feel last year. Right. I had more of a singular player feel. I agree. This is a team. I mean, everyone in the ballpark is going crazy because two run home or Bogart's going to worst busy given Jackson Merrill some input. By the way, if you don't remember, Jackson Merrill then came up and hit one 399 feet. Oh, there was that one. Okay. With the guys standing at the wall, he almost homered, but I just like that stuff. And you know, I, you know, I tell you a lot of stuff I don't like. You know what? To be fair, I'll give you one I don't like. Okay. Sorry. I'm old. Get off my lawn. I can't help it, but sorry and I love you, but Fernando hits a can of corn fly ball to right field, easiest out of the day. He doesn't even reach first base and then the ball is caught and he runs into the dug out. Are we doing the hustle thing again? It's to me, it's not even a hustle thing. If the guy drops the ball, he's not going to, but if he does, your butt should be on second base. That's just how I was taught to play baseball. That's how I learned it. That's what I've seen. And I want to tell you later in the game, Jake Rogers of the Tigers, who's a no one, hit a can of corn to center field, he put his head down, he busted his butt. And he was at second base when that ball was caught by Jackson Merrill. And if it had been dropped, he would have been there. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to pick on Fernando because he's not the only one now in this day and age that does that. But I told you something I liked. I'm going to tell you something I don't like don't do you really want Fernando sprinting down the line after coming off of a broken leg to I guess that could be the response to it. I know what you're saying and in a vacuum, yes, you run out every single darn right you do and every single hit. I mean, baseball, especially, you don't have to run that often in the sport. Don't tell my chow them. Oh, that was unnecessary. I'm sorry. Look, I brought it into balance. My other thing. I would go over Chrono, Chrono worth. I'm not as gaga over that Fernando, you know, jog the first base. I remember Jake Cronoworth before Jackson Merrill hit that walk off against the Mets and Edwin Diaz. Jake Cronoworth came back to Jackson Merrill and said something to him and we found out what it was and it was along the lines of, hey, his slider is not sliding. So if he throws you a slider, it's not going to break. Well, those things can help. It wouldn't help me, but it could help somebody like Jackson Merrill. Yeah. Um, do I have a couple of minutes to address our favorite ESPN writer? If we don't cover this on this show, then we failed Chris because this has been one of the bigger stories for us. Bradford Doolittle is back in our crosshairs and if you followed this show, you know who he is. He's ESPN plus we have to pay extra money for his stories. You love when I say that I do. Bradford Doolittle is the ESPN baseball and I'm going to quote him expert that just a month ago released his postseason awards rankings and among other things had Jackson Merrill ranked sixth best national league rookie. That was a very short time ago. Did not have him second to Paul Skeens didn't even have him third show to Emma Naga was up there. Didn't even have him fourth or fifth had Jackson Merrill sixth. And I of course went crazy. And I of course called him every name in the book, but mostly it just, to me it was embarrassing. You are, you are the ESPN, which is a, you know, pretty well reputable organization. You're their baseball expert and really your numbers tell you that Jackson Merrill was only the sixth best rookie. Well, Bradford Doolittle has finally seen the light today. His new rankings came out for the awards. Jackson Merrill has moved past everyone. And now he is first. And I think Adam Klug, our program director sent us this. He wanted to make sure I didn't miss it. Guess what, Adam? I didn't miss it. I had seen it already. But Adam sent it to me and said, Hey, you got to give Bradford Doolittle credit. He's, he's come around. I am not giving him a shred of credit. I mean, I cannot give a shred of credit to somebody that was stupid enough to have Jackson Merrill sixth last month. And just because they have him first now, basically he's admitting how wrong and how completely bamboozled and off base he was just a month ago. Now when he makes his explanation or writes his explanation of what goes into him, putting Jackson Merrill first now, he doesn't even really say that Jackson Merrill deserves it. He just puts a bunch of numbers like he's a bunch of gobbledygook. And he improved his overall acts rating, whatever on the 71st or 23rd. Yeah, I know. He's a top 10 into other or no, well, here's the biggest thing that's not here. Nowhere here does it say that last month I was stupid enough to put Jackson Merrill sixth. That's what you should write. The keep the keep an eye on. He still had to put this in there. Skeens has been the front runner for this honor for most of the summer and he hasn't done anything to lose that status. It's just that Jackson Merrill has come along like gangbusters. I don't care. Black Bradford do little is not going to be deciding the rookie of the year. I guess he may have one vote. He may. Apparently now that vote will finally go to Jackson Merrill, I actually, but if he's looking for me to jump up and down and pat him on the back because he rited something that was so egregiously wrong a month ago, he can forget it. I'm not, I'm not giving into that. I would almost rather him stick to his guts and say, I still think Paul Skeens is the rookie of the year. Don't disagree with you. He says it there. Paul Skeens hasn't done anything to lose the title. Stay with Paul Skeens. Stay with everybody that's wanted Paul Skeens all year. We don't need you on the Jackson Merrill ballot. You had him. Six. I mean, it. Yeah. That was pretty egregious. It was so bad, especially because this happened after a lot of the heroic. He was already leading every rookie in every category. And I believe it was right around the time that he did his, you know, you know, tying home run stuff. Yeah. And we called up the article like, ah, Jackson Merrill's got to be right there. Yes. All right. Nope. Bradford do a little still. Okay. Stop right there. Still probably doesn't want to be on our show. I was going to say he never got back to me. He never got back to his last time ever. Maybe he'll come on that this time now that he's put in first, maybe you'll think that we're going to come on and compliment him and we're just going to rip him. All right. Take a break. Our fire Friday interview will lead us into Padre baseball. This young guy, Alec Jacob, a right-hander from the Padre bullpen, get a chance to meet him before the pregame show stick around. Oh boy. I'm not the only one who just went through this agony. Anybody out there who owns Jaden Reed on their fantasy football team or Jordan love for that matter just suffered this disaster. Yeah, they had 12 guys on the field on both sides. I don't think I've ever seen them. I've never seen that before. Both teams had 12 guys on the field and it was a third down pass, sorry to love. Through a 40 yard touchdown to my guy, Jaden Reed, touchdown Packers, but obviously called back because they had both teams had 12 guys on the field. It was funny is that Chris, Chris, the first play from scrimmage, Chris goes, he's not even on the field. I was all upset. Then the third play they throw and he catches, he's running it. Yeah, touchdown. And then I'm like, and then scrape, he's like, there's a flag down and then they have a meeting and they anyway. So that's the agony and the ecstasy, yes, a fantasy football, all in one moment. It's only the first drive of the game, no score Packers and Eagles. They're making it. Don't Brazil. Fourth and sixth. I don't know. Yeah, this is just too many flags. Another flag. Real quick, before we get to out, Jacob, there's a couple of people on the chat that want to point out how great you look in your Joe Musk, Joe Musk today, I decided to wear a thank you for that. I appreciate it. I, you know, anything's an improvement over this crazy salad of a hairstyle that I have. So I try to wear on the dog walks, but it really is just too small. When I walked in today, Scrabby goes, what are you, what are you trying to stay out of the sun? I go, yeah, it's a hundred degrees out there. I need a little shade. It was so not like Chris, it wasn't a little weird, but I saw it lying around today and I thought it'd be fun to wear. All right. Padres and Giants tonight are fire Friday interview was Alec Jacob is a good dude. He's from Gonzaga. And we'll find out a little bit more about that and the rest of it right now. We got our fire Friday guest here with us now. Alec Jacob joins us. Alec, how are you, my friend? I'm doing great. How are you guys? We are. Well, thank you for coming on tough loss last night for the ball club. I mean, for a guy like you, you've come in and been able to kind of, you know, help when you've been asked to come in and get some outs. I mean, what has this experience been like for you this year compared to, you know, the past years where you've got an opportunity? It's been great, you know, like you said, coming in, throwing whenever, you know, they need me. I think this year, I know a little bit more of what they want from me and what to expect up here. And so it's helped me prepare throughout the season and in the off season for what's to come. And, you know, I'm just really taking it all in, honestly, and enjoying every day. Obviously it's incredible atmosphere here at Peko. And I'm just enjoying every minute and, you know, just taking it all in. Yeah, doing a hell of a job, Alec Jacob with the Padres, tenonings of work, fourteen strikeouts, one walk. That's a ratio that'll get it done for sure. I'm just curious because let's put last night behind us now. But after that game's over, the bullpen's such a tight fraternity. Do you guys all go at least give a little tap to Robert Swarman? This guy's done it all for you guys all year. Does everybody need to go over and just say, hey, head up and we'll see you tomorrow? Yeah. For sure, a little bit. But I mean, at the same time, you know, he's the guy we're going to rely on in those situations no matter what. And, you know, so I like to lose any faith in that guy, you know, he's doing now next time he's out there. He's going to shut it down, you know, nothing changes at all. But yeah, for sure, we're going to pick him up and hopefully we can pick him up today. And he'll get back on the horse as soon as possible. Like Jacob joins us here on Friar Friday, Gwen and Chris and Alec, you have a unique throwing style. I mean, you kind of, I would say side arm, it has this always been how you've thrown the base bar? Is this something you've developed in your pro career? Yeah, it's kind of been something I've always done a little bit younger when I was a young kid. I kind of swung the ball from the side a little bit being kind of a little weaker and it helped me get the ball across the infield a little bit better when I was playing infield. And so it kind of stuck with me. And then I got into high school and I was, you know, pitching over the top and pitching from the side and, you know, below is pretty similar both ways. So it was pretty easy to see the future there from the side and I got some looks as a side armor from a couple of schools. And so from there it was pretty easy for me to make that decision and just go full side arm. By the time I was junior in high school. Oh, wow. In a while. Yeah. God, I can imagine as a, as a sophomore in high school coming up as a right handed hitter against you, I'd be like bailing out like big, uh, Alec Jacob is our guest. Is there anything that side armors can do differently with the ball? You know, then a, then a regular, you know, over the top thurs or things that maybe guys look at you and go, man, I wish I could do that. Well, I'm sure, I mean, I think obviously it's probably more easy to get like a horizontal movement, um, go east to west and, uh, west to east. So I think that's definitely helpful for me. Um, I don't know, I think it's kind of hard to say. I think it depends on the guy a little bit, but, um, I think, you know, throwing a sweeper, um, you know, big horizontal sliders. Those are easier for me where it's like, you know, trying to throw for me like a curveball or a splitter or anything like that, this seems like no, it's impossible. So, um, uh, I feel like those are the main ones. Alec, you know, you mentioned something, uh, about velocity. You said it was the velocity's bit was about the same, no matter whether you're over the top of where you are right now. And I only bring that up because, you know, we're, we're in a league now that really only sees, you know, high velocity, you, you're unique in that way. What would you tell a young athlete at this point that doesn't have that kind of velocity? Well, I mean, what is it that they should be focused on if they have dreams of, of being a big leader? You figured it out a way to get here despite not having the high velocity that a lot of guys have. What kind of advice would you give to a young athlete right now? Yeah, that's a, that's a great question. Um, I would say just, you know, find other ways to, you know, make it work. And you know, there's plenty of ways to do that. Obviously, for me, I throw a sidearm and that makes it a little bit more deceptive. Um, but I think there's a lot of things, you know, you like, you can have incredible command and get guys out that way and you know that, that kind of picture may seem a little bit lost nowadays, but yeah, I definitely think that it's still, you know, a possibility. And I've done plenty of different things around my career to try and find a way to get a hitter off balance, you know, like messing with timing on the mound and changing different arms slots. Like, I've, I've really just tried to get creative. And, um, I think that's helped me a lot. Just, um, understanding partially like my ability and who I am as a pitcher and like what I do well. And then also just, uh, trying to be uncomfortable to the hitter like, how can I do something that hitters not going to like, how can I keep him off balance? Um, those have all been things that I've, uh, I thought about throughout my career and like talk to hitters about just like, you know, what do you guys hate that I do? Um, and from there, that smart, smart, Alec Jacob is with us. Alec, uh, appreciate the time. Uh, last thing for me, uh, you went to Gonzaga and Spokane, Washington. So you played in San Diego. I'm sure against USD. How much does it like drive you crazy when somebody says, Hey, how was life? If it Gonzaga, yeah, I mean, after a while now, I've kind of gotten used to it. But, uh, you know, you think with the basketball team success, it's like, you know, you really think that everyone would have it down by now, but, uh, yeah, I'm really hopeful for them this year too. They really got a good team. It looks like they can finally, you know, get that ring that they've been chasing. Well, hopefully you guys can get the same thing with the Padres, Alec, thanks so much for your time. Enjoyed catching up with you and look forward to seeing you out at the ballpark. Thank you, Alec. Yeah, thanks for having me. I appreciate you guys. Awesome job. Alec Jacob there. Good fire Friday interview with Mr. Alec Jacob. We have another minute or so left, uh, we'll update you on the football game, Packers had a touchdown taken off the board and then, uh, Jalen Hertz threw the Packers right back into scoring range with an interception. So green Bay is down inside the 20, five minutes into the game at Sao Paulo Brazil. Poor Chris is going to lose his mind. Oh my God. I had my touchdown taken away. Then my quarterback throws a pick. All of that happens in the first five minutes of the game. I wish people were in here because Chris goes, oh, there's negative two points. I could have had 11. No, I got negative two. It's such it's why do I even sign up to play every year? I must love the punishment. All right, everybody have a good weekend. We'll be back Monday. Padres are idle Monday. So we'll have a full four hour show on Monday be around or no, three hours Monday, two and a half because you're 49ers. You're playing Monday night. That's right. We're gonna have a baby. All right. Everybody enjoy the first Sunday football and the rest of the pottery weekend. We'll catch up to Monday on winning Chris for Scrabby Tony tonight. My dad works in B2B marketing. It's a good thing baseballs already have stitches, because the way these ball players are hitting them, yeah, yeah, they need stitches if they didn't already have them. So the next time you're watching a poor little baseball smacked off the wall and sent it, keep that little felling your thoughts, it's hard to be a baseball right now.
