Bears and Titans, our coverage starts early Sunday morning cap, 7 a.m. So we get ready for Bears and Titans, week one. We've been waiting all this time, and here we are. Caleb Williams and the Bears trying to chase greatness for the 2024 campaign. That's what it's all about, Jonathan, chasing greatness. And that's why Caleb Williams is here. Now you got to go out and take care of business. You've put veterans around him. He's come into this really good situation. The vibe has never been stronger. The city is behind this football team. But guess what? Go out and lose to the Titans? Oh man, Monday morning, I feel like throwing up. That'd be awful. Got to go out and find a way to be want to know. But cap, if it doesn't happen, and I believe it will, but if it does not happen, it doesn't mean that the season's over. I'll agree. I made that whole parallel of the college football team that's supposed to be one of the top teams in the nation. They lose their first game. They're like, oh, season's over. That was the time before this new system was in place. That was the case. But we got a long season to go. And I will say this. For me, cap, there is a little bit of a curve in my win total about the Bears because of Caleb Williams, because of Shane Waldron, because of the rookies that are on this football team. The guy that with the ball in his hands and lines here at the time is a rookie. It doesn't mean he's like, he's never played the position before. He's played high level college football at USC. I'm not telling you that he's going to be overwhelmed. What I will say is, is that there's going to be some mistakes here and there. Hopefully there'll be a lot more positive than negative. But I'm just saying that when people tell me 11 or 12 wins or Tommy, saying on marquee, 11 wins, like, that's so sure about that. Because there's going to be a couple of interceptions that Williams throws and you're like, how does he throw that ball? Because you know what happens when you panic, you revert back to what you knew in college. For Caleb Williams, there's going to be a lot of pressure on him and he'll revert back to USC, remembering that he's got to retreat and hold the ball 10 seconds and throw. Like he's got to realize that there's a difference between the two and it's going to happen. - In times of stress, you revert to individual tendencies. That's why I was always raised. - You've coached it. - Yes. - You had to coach it out of them, the high school to the college. - Correct. - And when you're up 15 points with three minutes to go, everybody's strutting up the court around the feet. Yeah, we got this. How about when you're down 15 at the half and every thing is coming apart? - Do you revert to your individual tendencies or do you stay wedded to the game plan and find a way to get the job done? That's the question. - That is a fantastic question, a fantastic question. 'Cause I'm sure this is something that you've said to your players when you coached. Like you've coached players that play the high level in high school or maybe the man in high school or maybe the second man. But then they haven't been down 15 or 20 in a game. - Whoa. - They never face adversity. - Or they're facing a guy who's guarding them. This is a basketball metaphor. That guy's all over me. - Yeah. This ain't high school anymore. What are you gonna do about it, right? - Yeah. - You gotta compete. You cannot, they call it being a peacock. - Oh, it's real easy. Spread the feathers out. We're killing them. Yeah, we're rolling. - What about when the game's on the line with two minutes to go? Where are you? Where are you? - Yeah. - We're gonna find out. I think this kid's special. - Yeah. - We're gonna find it. - I think so. But I'm willing to wait to see how great he can be if he can get great. I wanna see how that manifests itself. Like this year because of the weapons around him, I feel like the offense will be good because of the weapons around him. - I do too. - The running game, the wide receivers, the tight ends, Waldron. Waldron fixed Geno Smith, a quarterback who was broken. We've set him to the side. All right, there's Geno over here. All right, that'll be all for Geno. - He revitalized his career. - Yeah, all of a sudden, Geno got a three year, $75 million deal. You're like, whoa, Geno Smith's pretty good football player. - But it's all about the learning curve. And we saw glimpses of that in hard knocks. Where even Caleb said, okay, that's on me. I gotta learn that. And just the whole presence thing and being able to capture the huddle, you could be the greatest guy in the locker room. But when times get tough, can they turn to you and can you put the team on your back? - And the other question is, look, we're asking him, one of my neighbors said to me, what do you guys, I was listening to you and Geno, what do you mean he's never been under center? He's a quarterback. Said no, he's out of the shotgun and usually the way they ran their offense, he was not changing the play call and setting this protection and doing this and doing that, it's all different now. The cadence, the delivery, it's all stuff he's gotta learn, he's like, oh God. - When I say like nine wins for the Bears, that means that everything is going well, but not everything is perfect with this team offensively. That means there was a step back, there was a game and it's like, how the Bears lose that game? Well, 'cause the defense was forming. Well, Caleb had to learn that game. Well, he turned the ball over, that kind of, 'cause it happens, it happens the best of them in this league. You think that Caleb Williamson was immune to that? So all I'm saying is for me, I've always been measured with this because I know how this works in the NFL. We all know when rookies come in, it's never going to be perfect. The reason why that we bring up CJ Stroud is because that's an anomaly versus everything that we've seen, an anomaly, where he was able to just pick it up right away. A team that was terrible, organization that was terrible and Demico Ryan's and that defense and CJ Stroud and Houston Texans were able to get to the playoffs. We hope the same for the Chicago Bears. That's all. That is it. That's it. You know, it's not knocking them cap, but from my standpoint, it's like, boy, they've set all the pieces up on the chessboard for him to be able to win. The interesting thing is, you go back and you look at some of the, some of the numbers that Mitch put up in 2018 when they went 12 and four, his numbers weren't amazing. No question. But like his yardage, his first game, they beat Minnesota at Minnesota 24 to, excuse me, that was the first game they lost, Green Bay 24-23. He threw for at the Green Bay Packers. They had what, like a 20 to nothing lead at the half. He threw for 171. But like his fourth week, he threw for 354. Then against Miami, he threw for 316. Then against New England, he threw for 333. Like the dude was putting up some decent numbers. The playoff game against Philly through for 303. The defense was amazing. And we know Mitch never took the next step. With Caleb, I feel like that dude can be a beast. - Especially with what he has. He has a lot more than Mitch ever had. - Yes, that's great. (laughing) And again, we use the word infrastructure a lot on this show, but it still matters. I've told you publicly and privately, the slings and arrows that you took about your admiration and your rooting interest in Mitch Trabisky was unfounded. I've said that many times to you. Like it was, it was, 'cause I remember I worked nights, driving to go get breakfast at nine o'clock. All right, let's see what cap's talking about. Like, whoa, this furnace blast coming through the speakers of my truck, I'm like, this is not right. This isn't, and reason why I wasn't fair is because compare what the bears have now to what Mitch had then. Mitch putting up those kind of numbers with less than was impressive, but also the infrastructure told you many times and you agree with me. They shackled him to the pocket. That's not what he did at North Carolina. This is what the Arena League coach he had did. I used to stay in the pocket when I played in the Arena League. Well, this ain't the Arena League. And this guy should be able to roll left and right and be able to roll for first downs. Why is he chained in the pocket? Why? The offensive line was just okay, wasn't stellar, but you did not cater to his strengths enough. Correct. And so now look at him now. He's just a vagabond across the league because you want to put your Arena League tendencies on Mitch Trabisky. That's just a fact. It was. Correct. What he asked for it is you recall. He did, he wanted to run, he did. He wanted to be able to use his legs and get out. But the bottom line is he just wasn't a good enough player. I feel like this kid now, Caleb Williams, like he's the real freakin' deal. He just has to go out and do it. That's it. Now imagine if he was coached by Matt Nagy. Oh God. Right. I'm just saying, like a lot of that is, again, infrastructure. This guy, again, just a handful of games I get that. Mitch wasn't in there for like two or three years as a starting quarterback in North Carolina. But the notion that, no, you just stay there and just take a beating. Yeah, I used to roll out, yeah, I know. But when I played, this is what I did. So we're gonna do that. Okay, I'll just take a beating. Or FU, I'm gonna throw it for 300 yards anyway. And not get to where we really need to be. So the best organizations cap can look at a quarterback or look at a defensive player and look at the best things that they did on the field and say, saw your college tape. How does that translate to here? What do you need for us to be able to accentuate the positives and hide the negatives of your game? That's how it works today. Not for Matt? No, it was different. And now I feel like watching Caleb Williams play and seeing how Ryan Polls has built this infrastructure around him with guys in the room with him, with Kerry Joseph, the quarterback coach and Thomas Brown who came over from Carolina where he was an OC who's another quarterback guru to Shane Waldron to Ryan Griffin. Like they've done a really good job at surrounding him with a lot of knowledge. And of course, Cap, there's this this morning on unsportsmanlike. Five to seven before we come on the ESPN 1000. Michelle Smallman from St. Louis was born in Illinois. She's looking for a football team in the root four for the rest of her life. There's three teams that were left, the Jets, the Green Bay Packers and our beloved Chicago Bears. And Michelle Smallman says. So as you guys know, I am a girl from Illinois and I went to the University of Illinois. A lot of orange and blue in my closet. And I've always been jealous of my friends who were Bears fans because they have the monsters of the midway, like you said, they've been tough right there on the water in Chicago. They have a perfect identity. And you guys know how important home is to me, which is why I'm giving my final rose to, wait a minute, I don't live there anymore. I don't live in Illinois anymore. CC, give it to the Green Bay Packers. - Yeah, I can't do this no, yeah, yeah. - The Green Bay Packers. - Yeah, go pack, go. She took the Packers as a team she's gonna root for for the rest of her life. From Illinois, went to the University of Illinois. She doesn't have a football team. And now she does. - Right, 'cause she was a Rams fan and they moved to LA and she refused to follow them because they abandoned her town. So guess what? Smallman, best of luck to you. Band, out. You're a Cardinals fan and a Packers fan. And we're supposed to accept that? No, bye bye. Good luck to you. You're out, public enemy number one. Coming to a local post office near you. Michelle Smallman's picture. - Oh man. And Shay, I'm telling you, she chose a team. That's not even gonna be talked about her own show. That's the thing that's so crazy about it, right? - People are gonna think I'm being over the top. - I think that show talked about Caleb Williams more than we did. And honestly, like that's not- - That's not Justin. - Yeah. - Yeah, between Justin Fields and Caleb Williams, I don't know how they had time for other conversations. So it's bizarre to me. She picked a Green Bay team. They haven't really talked about much at all. - I mean, the conversation with them is they're gonna get to the playoffs and get pounded. - Also, the whole thing was a joke. I mean, she's saying that she wanted to be a jet fan because jets fans have the best fans. They don't have fans. They're the second team in their own city. They've got Greenie and 11 nutcases. That's it. There are no jets fans. - Yeah, really disappointed in her. I thought she was better than that. - She's been a friend of mine for 10 years. I'm just surprised at that. And I called in on that show and I let her have it. It's like, we've been friends for all this time. I was driving past Odra Field when I called in on sportsman-like, beautiful blue sky, wonderful day, big buildings cap, five-star restaurants, everything you want, that's world-class. And she chose the VFW hall. That is Green Bay, Wisconsin. - Correct. - Holy smokes. - Have fun at your fish fry, small man. - I was surprised. 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our phone number. It's hard to you about the bears. If you're on hold, you will be on the air. Cap and I are wondering from you, the most important thing that you need to see in week one for the Chicago Bears. I mean, we've talked about a number of things, but for you, what do you want to see? As a bear tick on the Titans, you can hear it right here. On the home of the Bears, the SP in 1000. All season long, tune in to ESPN Chicago for the weekly Caleb Williams press conference. Catch every update from QB1 brought to you by the Chicago Land BMW Centers. Captain Jay Hood, weekday morning, seven to 10, here on ESPN 1000. And then it'll be Greenie coming in at 10, followed by Carmon and Yurko 12 to three. One will still be 2.30 to five into exciting White Sox baseballs and take on the Orioles. That's a five o'clock pregame right here on the home of the White Sox, ESPN 1000. Proud, proud home. - And the home of the Bears. - That's right, buddy. - Bears win the Super Bowl, White Sox set a record. We'd have history. - Either way, right? - On both our team. - Just remember what we learned from Hardin Locks, Cap. And you got to start understanding this around here. - Okay. - Oh boy. - All right. - This is a time of year that is not very fun, right? For a lot of people, right? - Right. - Coaches, players. We spent time in the springtime building relationships with everybody, right? The next two days fell, the team's gonna change right now. We all understand that. I wanted to thank you for your effort, for your focus and intensity, and then most importantly, the passion. The passion you guys have for each other, and the passion you have for the team, and the passion you play with. As we go through this process, always be encouraging. Love the brother next to you. That's what we gotta do. If he's in a hard spot, pick him up. We're human beings, that's real. This time of year, it's just different. It's just different. But I just wanted to thank you guys ahead of it. - Just remember that, Cap. - Love the brother next to you. - Love the brother next to you, okay? - I do. - Well, I mean, I think sometimes you need a little primer, just to remember. That's it, just remember. - Love the brother next to you. - A brother. - Just recall that. - That's it. - All right. You remember that too, Shay. Love the brother next to you. - Again, I know that Shay-- - This is a time of year-- - Love the brother next to you. - Shay whizzes all over the hard knocks thing. I enjoyed every episode. Was it as spicy as Rex Ryan and Mike Tanamam had it years ago? No, that was awesome. But I enjoyed it. Because blanks being done differently for my favorite football team. And people are realizing that. And players that I trust, that I know, that I'm asking with no microphones, no cameras. It's just us. What's it like up there now? - Totally different. Vibe is so much better. Polls is the real deal. They love Iberflu-- Let's go. - And just now that it's over, it's official. George McCasky kept his beak out of it. Was not seen one time. I think my, definitely by design. But I mean, it would have been nice for the chairman to say a few things about the Chicago Bears. Nope. Was not around. Not gonna fill me, nope, nope. In this step, Sen. Covering up the camera. Nope, nope, no quotes. - God bless. - How about that? I mean, now, say this is the Dallas Cowboys. It's all Jerry Jones. - Oh, 100%. - Sorry, that's the difference there. - All Jerry. - All right. What do you wanna see from the Bears? 3, 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, our opponent was still to come from thought to out the Cubs in their match up against the Pirates yesterday. And Fort Lauderdale, Florida, listening on the ESPN Chicago App. Here's Jason on Captain Jason, good morning. - Morning, Jay Hood, Cap. How you guys doing? - What's up, buddy? - I'm good. I'm good. I said, turned under you and I was at IBC with Jay Hood. So good to talk to you guys. I'm ready for some Bears football. How about you guys? - We are fired up, ready to roll. - So yeah, man, I was just talking about it. I just wanna see a three-phase game, man. Obviously Caleb, the name of the town, everybody wants to see him. But I wanna see this defense perform. You know, take a step ahead. I wanna see Gervon, see if he took the other step going to the second year, get to that second level. You know, some turnovers, you know, run defense, obviously. Obviously, Tory Taylor, man. People don't talk about him. That field position's gonna play a lot from the season. You know, when you gotta pin him inside the 20s, constantly give that defense that long field, give him some rest too. Offense, you know, keep the ball moving, get drives going. That's a lot of three and outs last year. Defense back on the field, you know, offense could have moved it. But obviously, you know, Caleb's the story. Let's see Caleb, you know, take over this game. You know, obviously you got the running game. You got this, you know, you got receivers, you know, lean on them, like, pull. You know, balance it out. You know, I just wanna see a complete game from all sides of the ball. - All three phases, right? - Yeah, and you, again, I said to you, and I forgot to ask Tommy this. You gotta run the football. You gotta be able to run the football. If you establish the run, everything else will set up. That's the key. - As far as Tory Taylor's concerned, Jason brought that up in the conversation as well. Cap is kind of like having a dinner party at the house. And you get everything set up. The meal is perfect. The ambiance is perfect. And the food is set out at the table, but there's no silverware. Well, that's one of the phases of being able to have a nice meal, right? - Correct. - So why would you skimp on silverware or something to eat with unless it's something that she with your hands? And obviously if it's a well, you know, a well-to-do, wonderful meal is laid out. - You're not picking up a steak and just-- - Yeah, gnawing into it. - So that's why you have Tory Taylor. That's the point. Like, why would you say, we're good in our offense. We like Caleb Williams, like Roma Dunes A. Our secondary is solid. Our defensive line is what we want it to be. And then with special teams, just get anybody. - No. If Tory Taylor is the best that's available, you take Tory Taylor. - Correct. - Don't you want your special teams taken care of? - Correct. - So that's why I had no problem with the bears drafting Tory Taylor. If he's the best, and he played an Iowa, by the way, so he understands swirling winds and cool or cold temperatures, he can handle the job. So why wouldn't you draft Tory Taylor? And it's like, I never, that's always a disconnect for me. It's three phases to this game, is it not? So don't you want all three phases to be taken care of? - Correct. I wanna be the best I can be at each phase. I still think Paul's needs another draft class slash free agency period to get more depth on his roster. But what he has been able to turn around from the day he arrived is insane. - Of course, that's why you take care of everything. All three phases. And one of the phases is Tory Taylor. We were at practice and seeing him. I mean, within the five yard line, every time, by with his kicks, always the five yard line. Just see, they say that he has like the equivalent of a great golfer. - Yeah, he's like Scotty Sheffler, that's what they call him. - It's crazy. So by the way, did you see that breaking news this morning? - About side bar man approach. - About Sheffler? - Yes. - Brought to you by Eakin Law. - Three, one, two, six million for the great Howard Ankit. - Summer ball. - They just announced they're gonna have a special thing around the Christmas holidays. Rory McElroy and Scotty Sheffler in Vegas against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Kepka. Live versus the PGA. - On the CW? - They did not say where it's going to be. - Or maybe Turner TV. - I don't know where it's going to be. - TNC, TNC. - TNC, TNC. - Yeah, so that, yeah. - How cool that be? - Of course. - Oh. - I'm glad that golf is upholding something that you and I used to watch where you had competition between athletes, or in this case golfers. I mean, when you used to have off to the side, away from the circuit, all right, me against you. And you used to have this in basketball, had this in baseball with Homer and Derby. You had this all the time, off to the side, it's me against you in this competition. I think that this is a throwback to what we used to see. I mean, sure, there's money in the line, we're gonna make a lot of money for this. But the point is though, that's entertainment for the fans. It's not a tournament, it's just these two going after one another. These four are going after each other. - It's gonna be awesome. - That's gonna be awesome. - What a pivot from Rory McElroy, who was condemning anybody who took live money. Now to quote, "This isn't just a contest "between some of golf's major champions. "It's an event designed to energize the fans. "We're all here to put on a great show "and contribute to a goodwill event "that brings the best together again." - You say this is Christmas Day? - Holy pivot, Rory. - I don't know if they gave the date. - Hold on. - Because I just want to know what's against the NFL and NBA that day. Is it that? 'Cause no one's watching that, that's the case. They didn't stand alone. - Exact date and venue not reported, but you have to imagine they will not be going up against the Chiefs and Raiders on Christmas Day. - Yeah, they just said, in Vegas this December, that's all it says. - Okay. - So like in the holiday, okay. Mid-December, so. - Gonna have the college football playoff going on and you're gonna have the NFL broadcast on Wednesday afternoons. - I think that the NBA, Rory knows they're gonna, these two are gonna merge. He knows that, that's gonna happen. - Well, we called that a couple of years ago when you and I had to sit down with Shark. - Remember that? - Mm-hmm. - You and I hung out with Greg Norman for like a half hour. That guy was really cool to talk. - Very interesting. - Yes. - A lot of things to say there. I think that, I think he saw it then in our conversation that eventually it's something like that was gonna happen. And it should. This whole divide between the two, it's just golf. To me, it's just golf. Oh, well, what I have, I'm against live. Why? Some of the best golfers in the world that live. I said it's a PGA. When there's a major, I'm watching. Do you have friends of yours that just won't win? They just won't watch live golf? - I had a couple buddies, I said we were out there. Why would you agree to do that? I said, why not? - It's golf, man. - Oh, oh, I got that too. - Yeah, it's like for us to be broadcast from there. - Oh yeah. - Got that too. - It's always absurd to me that people were like asking golfers to be the moral authority of the world. If somebody's offering you 300 million dollars, take the money. - Let me ask you a question. I asked you this months ago. If I told you that, what is it? What do they call it? The PIF fund? - PIF. The fund that has all these gazillions of dollars? - Yes. - They bought a 30% share of the white socks and they said, yeah, the payroll's going to 400 million. Fix it right now. Socks fans are gonna be like, I'm in. - Absolutely. - Tom, we want a share of the Cubs. Oh, and by the way, there's this closer that we found. He's a free agent, he's gonna get 80 million a year. Here you go. - Oh, gonna lock down all the games? All of a sudden, in. - My morals say that your money's no good here. - Well, it was the same nonsense in 2016 that people, I can't believe they're gonna take over all this Chapman. And then the first game he's at home at Wrigley with a save, they're all with their iPhones, all filming. - This is so cool. - Yeah, yep, it's pro sports, man. - There are no morals and sports, like just give it up. It doesn't exist. - Where she rises and gettin' suspended, is he, there's no morals. - He'll have to deal with that next year is what it looks like. - I was to say, Shay, that there's plenty of high horses in sports, in sports media, that they'll say one thing, but then of course that opinion just melts away because of public opinion. Seriously, there is always on Twitter or on television the moral high horse of, I can't believe that you can't take that oil money, you can't. I can't. - Why not? - Correct. - If it betters my organization. - And I don't blame anybody if it helps you sleep at night to feel like the bigger person and you're takin' a moral stand, great, good for you. Just also might wanna try living in the real world a little bit and understand these things are gonna happen with or without you. - All right, we will get your phone calls in here next as well as talk about the Chicago Cubs. How 'bout this is a race still on for the Cubs? Let's talk about it on the Captain J. Hood Morning Show. (upbeat music) - Captain J. Hood, our best. - I wanna thank both you guys, man, for the great season of it and information and I just wanna say I appreciate you guys and I love this show. - Chicago's home for sports, ESPN Chicago. (upbeat music) - Captain J. Hood, weekday morning, seven to 10, here on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Don't forget to go to our YouTube YouTube.com, look for ESPN Chicago and hit the subscribe button. - As well as on Twitch, switch.tv/ESP and 1000 Chicago. My partner went to the Cubs game with his son because, not just because it was a beautiful night for baseball, it's because Paul Skeens was on the other side against the Pittsburgh pirate. - That is correct. - And Cap, I wanted you to tell the audience about your experience there. I will just tell you watching the game at home, the umpiring in that game for Skeens and Hendricks was brutal. Absolutely brutal. I just didn't, I didn't like it. I was just so inconsistent. And it's one of those things, Cap, where the Cubs had every opportunity to get to Skeens early. What do we say about an ace? You wanna get to him, get to him early. Cubs had opportunities. They just could not cross a run, cross home plate. - So Brett and I, we like going to the ballpark. The two of us have a good time. So I went on and bought tickets on Seek Geek. My sister lost in me. Go on Seek Geek, let's see what they have. I've been around all the different sites. I find two tickets very reasonably priced. First row, right next to the Cubs dugout. Like where the camera man is, is right in front of me and Craig Council's three feet to my left. I'm like, done. I buy the two seats. We drive down there, we stop and see Joe at obvious shirts. We go over and eat at D'Agostino's with some buddies of mine and then we go into the game and we're sitting there and Paul Skeens throws so freaking hard. It is, like I've seen guys throw a hundred. This dude has this, you know, thick legs, big backhanded bam. He just, it's unbelievable. Like I don't know how you catch up to this thing. The Cubs load the bases. Skeens was walking off the mountain and he struck somebody out. The umpire took his mask off like, you wanna talk to him? I'm like, oh God, here we go. Terrible. He ends up piling up his pitch count but the Cubs can't get the big hit in the big spot. And then Paredis is up. It's hot Paredis, falls a ball off at 100 miles an hour and literally five feet in front of me is the camera man, Jason, who used to be one of my camera guys when I was at NBC. It drills him right in the top of the thigh. Oh my God. He, I'm like, oh God, he's gotta be dead. And he went down, kind of doubled over, popped back up and grabbed the big camera and he's back at it. I'm like, yeah. I took a picture and I sent a tweet out and all the guys I worked with at NBC were like, dude, that's your guy, Jason, we called him New Jack 'cause he got punched once, New Jack City. I'm like, New Jack, are you okay? He's like, it's really sore, but I'm gonna be fine. Oh, I couldn't believe it. And then watching the Cubs ineptitude offensively against the pirate bullpen was not fun either because Paul Skeens is what he is. He's tough, he's a great pitcher and he's got a beautiful future ahead of him. You can get nothing? Their offense just was inept. And I, to lose the game the night before was devastating. To lose last night was, okay, you could deal with, to lose them both? We're in big trouble. I just don't know how the Cubs didn't get to Skeens early like they should have. He did not have his best stuff last night, Cap. But his stuff is so electric. But, I mean, but again, what does Sano tell you about? Control and command, Pat. He doesn't have the control, but he has the command. Yeah, he walked four. Where's my pen? Yeah. So, I mean, that was always a thing. When I was watching him like, he feels like he's getting squeezed and he's a little bit off tonight. But here's the thing, 100 pitches through five. The pirates know, they're like, all right, that's enough. You know, you get, you struggle through this thing, but we got enough runs, we're gonna be okay. We're gonna find a way to out of this thing. Yeah, Kyle Hendricks was fine. He gave up two runs in five innings. And then they brought in Tyson Miller and a three run home relater. See you later, thanks for coming. Have a good night. That's the inconsistency we're talking about, Cap, with this Cubs team. This is what we've been telling you the whole time, where it's good that they can win some games, but it's so up and down. It's so up and down. There's no reason why the Cubs can have won this series. Yeah, again, I don't have a problem that they lost last night. You cannot blow the game the night before. You cannot. Three nothing in the eighth. Do you know the last time the Chicago Cubs lost a game with a three or more run lead at Wrigley in the eighth inning or later? Who was it? Che, do you know? Yeah, Monday night. No, prior to that. I don't know. That would be the Bartman game. That would be 2003. The NLCS. Is that the Alex Gonzalez game or? Yeah, okay. That's it. The ground ball, the Alex Gonzalez that he booted. Correct. That's who people should be looking for. Where's that guy? He went into hiding. I mean, it's one thing that Bartman's still around the area and people and no one's talked to him. Find Alex Gonzalez. What was with that ground ball? Correct. Brutal. Brutal. In that situation. Absolutely brutal. So. But we had a great time. It was a great night out there. Good crowd. People were into it. It was just a lot of fun. But not the end result, Cap. Five nothing. No. The end result was terrible. Yeah. So. So it's all, it's over for you. It's all over. Look, they're four and a half back. It's done. That'll be all. You got the Yankees and Dodgers on deck. You needed this series. That's it. That's all. They got us in for a day and then they killed it. You know, Cap, let's just tell the facts of what's going on with this Cubs team. You're lucky that Major League Baseball has yet another extra wild car for you to even to think that you have a chance. The extra wild card they put in in 2022. You're just lucky. 'Cause otherwise you'd be washing your hands in this ball club also. You're just trying to hang on to a third wild card spot. That's what you're doing. You're hoping and wishing the ball club isn't good enough. And that falls at the feet of Jed. Sorry. Get 23 games left. Are you listening to the show? I am 23 ball games left. Cap, if we can go. Oh, for heaven's sakes. You guys, I guess we could go where? 15 and eight. I get dinner from Norlink. That's all it matters. You don't even care about the playoffs anymore. You just care about me buying you a steak. Yep. I want him to have to pay. I want him to have pain in this game. Like out of nowhere, the Mets are hot again. Sixth game winning streak. What the hell is that? How about the Braves? Lindor, Hot, Braves, my San Diego Padres. Yeah, on their Christmas of 80 wins. Man. Yep. Cubs are 71 and 68. A game in front of those dirty cardinals. Mm-hmm. But they are five games ahead of waddle and Maggie sketches, Reds. Well, that's all that matters. Well, that's one way to look at the standings. What do we mean? That's all that matter. I thought the playoffs mattered. Finished better than the Cubs banner raising. Oh, my God. Opening day next year. I don't know what the birds are going to do this year, but if we meet the 30 Packers twice, that's a win for me. Bears and Cubs. Cubs will win today, tonight. Sure. With Imanaga. Sure. They will beat the pirate to get a day off. And then we've got to beat some Yankee ass this weekend. Got to take that series. The White Sox beat the Yankees. Send it to if you-- your dead-ass team can do it. We can certainly do it. There's not happening. What you really have to hope for is that they watch one Soto at Wrigley this weekend. And Jed just falls in love. And Tom just falls in love. If it takes this weekend, then we got the wrong people in charge. You might. You got three one news. You got three 120 games to all day games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Soto and Judge are going to be breaking windows across the street. I hope that they-- Will they have fans outside the ballpark to catch the ball going down the street? Maybe me. I'll just be standing out there. Oh, no, actually football's on. Never mind. And the games matter for the Yanks. They're half back of the Orioles after the Yankees. Clay Holmes gave up a walk-off Grand Slam with a one-run lead last night. And by the way, Shay, just for the-- so everyone knows, Cubs Yankees, Assad, Wicks, Tyone. So long, everybody. Not even skipping a-- I'm not going to take on a Yankee. If you're really serious about, all right, skip a start. All right, just put in anybody. Is Garrett Colpich in this weekend? Because he's been awesome lately. He's pitching Sunday. He's been incredible, Tyone Cole on Sunday. I would have had Imanaga skip a start to take on the Yankee. I would have. I would have been a bullpen day today. No, because you don't want to give him two extra days of rest. Like Monday, you don't-- it's TBA for you. Against the Dodger. So-- [LAUGHTER] Hey, you're sunk. It's all over. It probably is, but-- Oh, man. We'll see. All right, we've got the cap and jighood cut of the day right around the corner on Chicago's Home for Sports.
