(upbeat music) - Good morning, Chicago. And welcome in to the Captain Jacob Morning Show on a ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you, we've got Shay. We've got Jamor, we've got you on this Wednesday morning, 3-1-2-3-2-3-7-7-6, our phone number. We can't, usually, today would be a Waddle Wednesday, but Tommy's off for a good reason and a great cause. - Yeah, he's playing golf. - No. (laughing) - Tommy's beautiful daughter, Georgia, is being induced today. - Bear down. - First grandchild in the Waddle household. (applause) - Super cool, super awesome. Saw Georgia when I was up at Tommy's house a week ago. And she's ready, super cool and all the best to the beautiful Waddle family. Love that dude. - So, all the best of Tommy and his family during this time of joy. - That is correct. - Tommy, you're officially old. - No, I do think if he was really, really committed to us, he'd be doing his hit from the labor and delivery area. - Yes, walking back and forth, smoking a cigarette. - Correct. (laughing) - Correct. - So, all the best of Tommy. We, still a Waddle Wednesday, even though Tommy's not here, still a Waddle Wednesday to us. - That is correct. - Right here on cap and J-hood. So, I know that to the average bear's fan, cut down day and releasing talents, like, just fast forward me to the season. Just give me to the Titan game, we understand. But we have to be a full service gas station here, Cap, where we're not only just giving you gas, but also we're cleaning up the windshield, we're putting air in your tires, we're making sure everything, that's what we do here, full service station, the Cap and J-hood show. Meaning that I know that all the emphasis and the focus is on the offense and Caleb Williams and the draft picks and all that. But it does matter who else is on this roster. And I think the biggest takeaway from all the cuts and non-cuts for the bears, is that gales Jones gets another shot at this thing. You know, speed kills, as we always know, right? That run, he made that 39 yard run for the touchdown, where he cut back. That was a thing of beauty. Now again, Courtney said he's not gonna be the number one tailback, that's the Andre Swift. He's not gonna be ahead of Herbert or Rocha on Johnson, but there are gonna be moments where you have an opportunity to use him or use him as a decoy on a play. - May I use you for an example of Vales Jones? Can I use you as an example as a coach? - 100%. - Okay. So there's your evaluating talent. Try to figure out who's the best 12, 13 we get on this roster for your college basketball team. And there's a certain athlete that you have that has tried out for your team, Cap. And you see, boy, this guy is the fastest guy on the floor right now. As you evaluate it, and you see, boy, this guy's fast. He can get from sideline to sideline. He can get to the basket quicker than anybody else. But he doesn't shoot the ball well. But he can get to the basket. And he's just a demon defensively, gets back in his stance on a make or a miss, and he's already in the stance before his other four teammates are there. But he doesn't shoot the ball well. But he does have an intangible or two that you say would utilize him. So do you keep that guy on the roster, even though you have much better players on the roster? - Yes. - 'Cause this is what Vales Jones is going through, I think. - So there's a line in the movie Miracle where he's sitting up in the press box in Colorado, the Broadmoor Arena. They just have started the tryouts for Team USA. And Craig Patrick walks in, there's her Brooks, and he goes, "Hear Craig, look at that." He's like 26 names. He goes, "What's that?" This is the final roster? We got a week of this. We've just been on the ice a couple hours. He said, "I'm not." And he goes, "You're missing some of the best players." - I'm not looking for the best players, Craig. I'm looking for the right players. Vales Jones may play a key role. Maybe he won't, but maybe, just maybe. There's a key moment, you go, "Oh God, am I glad "we had that speed?" That's why they kept it. Could there be a running back that's more talented? Maybe. Could there be a receiver more talented? - Probably. - Yeah. - But when you look at all the different skill sets, he's also very well respected and liked by his teammates. All of that comes together. They're giving him a shot at this. I've almost done a 180 on Vales Jones, if you've noticed, over the last week, in which I asked myself, "Okay, so if you cut Vales Jones, "who on the scrap heap can be able to play a key role? "Or who is as fast as Vales Jones? "Who is as versatile as Vales Jones on the scrap heap?" And I don't know if there's anybody. - Correct. - That's the only reason why I'm like, "Okay, all right, hood. "Allow him to be on the roster. "However, either flus and the staff utilize him, "hopefully it's a positive. "Whether there's special teams, "whether it's a certain section of plays, "I just don't want to have him get the ball "and it's a negative play, or multiple negative plays, "because that'll piss me off." That's what happened with Patterson, a number of times, where either he wasn't utilized properly or that the defense was ready for him. 'Cause when you remember as a bear, if he was back there, it's like, "All right, well, he's getting the ball automatically." - Correct. - Not even as a fake, just like, "Yeah, he's getting the ball." Boom, negative three. Boom, negative five. That doesn't help your offense. It stalls the offense out, correct. So my hope is, is that because of his skillset and his versatility, the size, the speed, the combination of both, that he can help the bear's team. - Yeah, and he's got that, the speed kills, man. Yeah, I get it. - And you never know, you're in a fourth quarter, you're like, "Oh God, swift banged up. "This guy's banged up. "That guy's tired. "Vayless, get back there." Boom, breaks a run, you're like, "Wow, glad we have him." It may not work, but I commend them for giving every opportunity to try and make it work. - 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-7-6 is our phone number. You know that conversation we just have according about the offensive line. That didn't make me feel better about the offensive line. I thought that after our conversation that she provided clarity, it didn't make me feel better about it, 'cause she talked about Ryan Bates, Miss Time with a shoulder injury, Kramer's still around the Alainai product, Doug Kramer's still on the roster, right? And so, could you be happy with Braxton Jones, Kevin Jenkins, Coleman Shelton, Nate Davidson, Darnell Wright as your offensive line? 'Cause that's the five that we keep hearing about. I'm concerned more about the depth. Somebody goes down, how much of a drop off is it? 'Cause it's important to protect Caleb at all costs. - It is, now he also has to help his offensive line by getting the ball out more quickly. Justin held it longer and almost anybody in the league. Caleb has had a penchant at USC because they allowed him to improvise. - Yeah. - You heard Iberflus in the first hard knocks. - Two and a half seconds, balls gotta be out. - Tom Brady has talked about it. 2.5 to 2.75, if it's not out and I get sacked, I don't care what happened on the offensive line, it's my fault, I held it too long. So, get it out and that means your offensive line looked a whole lot better. - You know, these quarterbacks that have that lettuces and to move around the pocket cap, they just think they can provide magic. I'm sure Justin felt that way too. It was running for his life, but also feeling like he's back in Ohio State, like oh, the offensive line will hold up for me. Like it's holding up for 7.8, you can't, you can't do it. And Caleb's gonna learn. - Agreed. - Probably, we saw a little bit of this where he was able to scramble and get out of the way in preseason and I think that, you know, he realizes, okay, I gotta get the ball out. But there's gonna be times in the NFL that he's gonna think he's in Los Angeles, you know, in a maroon as a USC Trojans like, oh, I got plenty of time. And then, is there gonna be a guy coming off the line that's gonna beat his ass coming off the line? - Where'd that guy come from? - Fast. - Gotta get the ball out, kid. - So that, you know, and that's gonna be the part of the growing pains of the quarterback. - I agree. - I don't think I should have to say this out loud, but sometimes it has to be said, Cap, that because this is a rookie quarterback in Caleb Williams and having a rookie wide receiver, Roman Dunes, hey, you're going to have to tolerate the growing pains if you are a Chicago Bears fan. We all have to. Don't think you're coming in here with a ready-made product that's like, oh, he makes my homes like plays. - We're in, we're getting my homes, no, we're not. We're getting the first Caleb Williams. I get all these comps across my timeline about who Caleb Williams is, who he reminds you of. We got this in basketball parlance for years, right? That player reminds me of so-and-so. Oh, look at those arms, look at that speed. He reminds, I want him to be the first Caleb Williams and the best Caleb Williams he could be. - Meantai Teo was talking about Caleb Williams. - With whom? - He was on, he's now a media guy. Oh, which amaze me. - Don't do that, J-Moor. Don't, don't be looking at me like that. - I was wondering who he was talking to. - The Naikakua. (laughs) - And he had an interesting comp. - Yes, he does. I would like to just applaud Meantai Teo for not going into hiding. - Yeah, he's really good on this, he's really good. I'm just happy that he's like, I know the whole catfishing thing and people made fun. But he's back out there. - He is, he's like, whatever, man, it happened. I got catfished. - So here's his comp. It's not even football, it's a football, it's this. - So we do a lot of comparisons here at Good Morning Football and one of the biggest comparisons we've been making has been Caleb Williams looking a lot like Patrick Holmes and rightfully so. But I'm watching this young man do what he does. I'm watching him scramble around and make all of these incredible passes. And I start thinking like, it kind of looks like somebody else that I'm familiar with, but I just can't put my finger on it. And then last week, I click on, I'm hard knocks and I'm watching him against the Cincinnati Bengals. And I see the mouthpiece. And when I see the mouthpiece at the crown of his mouth, I'm like, that's it? It's Mr. Night Night himself, it's Steph Curry. - Oh! - He doesn't put his mouthpiece in his mouth. He's running around during the play. Like Caleb Williams, if you're watching Hard Knocks, he doesn't put the mouthpiece in his mouth. He actually plays the whole entire play with the mouthpiece at the corner of his mouth. He scores the touchdown and he puts the mouthpiece in. After that, I'm like, that's Steph. And he's turning around towards the fans before the ball even goes in the net. It reminds me a lot about Caleb Williams and his ability to make very difficult things look easy. - I like the comparison too, to Steph Curry. - So, man, I tell. - Yeah, I mean, look, Steph Curry's gonna go down as a top 15 player of all time in the history of the sport. Top 10, he's amazing. Caleb has it thrown one pass yet in the National Football League, you know, real game. So, let's let it play out. I'm driving the bus, you know that. - Yeah. - I believe he will easily be the greatest quarterback in the history of Chicago Bears. And he will go down if he does what we all think as one of the greatest athletes to ever play in this city. That's what being the Bears quarterback is if you're good. - I find it interesting that Manti says that about Caleb Williams. Well, you know what, his lips to God's ears, that he has the Steph Curry mentality. And Steph Curry has taken his shots, but also, I'm talking about just, you know, on the losing end here and there, but that guy is the greatest shooter we've ever seen and has a swagger about him. It's a swagger cap that 20 years ago, we would have said, "Look at that hot dog. Look at that showboat. This guy needs to be knocked on his ass." And it's so funny that in our sports society, no one says, no one needs to knock Steph Curry off his ass because he's out there moving the shoulders around. He's hitting threes in your face. He's shooting it from the moon. And people love the swagger and the feeling that he brings to the Warriors fans when he's at home. Hell, when he's on the road, he gets cheers because we've never seen anything like it. And so my hope is, is that Caleb Williams has that kind of swagger and that confidence that he can just drop it in the bucket and make the offense home and make it even better. Hopefully he does have that. He seems like he does. Even though the Kansas City Chief said, you can't tell me that you're not nervous. Of course you're nervous. Nah, I'm good. Oh, really? All right, we'll see. See you out there, buddy. So we saw it in Hard Knocks last night. So my brother's texting you and I saying, Stroud was ready to roll from game one. They lost their first two games last year. The Houston Texans. Correct. CJ Stroud, opening day. First game in the NFL. 28 of 44 for 242, no TDs, no picks. Sacked five times, pass the rating of 78. So he was okay. The next game, they lost 25 to nine to the Baltimore Ravens. Then they lost at home to Indianapolis 31 to 20. Yep. But Caleb, or excuse me, what's that? CJ Stroud's numbers. A little different in week two. He had one game under his belt. 30 of 47 for 384 and two touchdowns. Sacked six more times. He finally got a win in his third game in the National Football League. They beat Jacksonville on the road by 20, 37, 17. He threw for 280. So he hit the ground running. Yeah. But again, I'm not gonna put unrealistic expectations on a rookie quarterback, 'cause that is not the norm. Shay, do we, do we not talk about Justin Herbert? Like it's just a small sample size of someone in their first year, but even get to the playoffs or have tremendous numbers. It's Andrew Luck, it's Justin Herbert, it's CJ Stroud, and hopefully Caleb could be part of that lineage. Correct. The one thing I'd say is this is, like it never happened. Basically, until the last 15 or so years that a rookie quarterback would be taken in the first five picks and just immediately be one of the top quarterbacks in the league, never happened. The last 15, 10 years, it's happened like three or four times. So it does feel a little more likely. Part of that's the way the game's played and how offenses get called. Shane Waldron's kind of a part of that. Gonna be a lot of too tight end, gonna be a lot of trying to help your quarterback and make things easy and gonna be a lot of throwing the football. Yeah. But I mean, the Bears had no choice here. Like, who would they start? Nah. Please don't call in here and say, well, they could have kept Justin. But, Cap, that's been my point. Going back to the Tom Brady thing, that's been my point the whole time. If you look in the history of the NFL, going back to when Terry Bradshaw got drafted, no first round quarterback sits there rookie year unless there's a legit top 15 top 10 guy in front of them. So, it was always Bears taking Caleb, he's QB one. Correct, 'cause you're not bringing Tana Hill in here and teaching him the offense. They tried that when they got Mitch and they brought in Glennon. Yep. That failed. There was no option. You couldn't have Justin on the roster with Caleb here. A hundred percent. Beijing's not ready to be your starter. No, this way it was going to go, always. I'm just giving the Bears a benefit of the doubt based on the roster that he put around Caleb Williams. You can tell me about CJ Stroud, that's fine. And that came out of nowhere, by the way, because that organization was a dumpster fire for a while after firing coach after coach and not being able to get a footing on that organization. But I'm just telling you that when it comes to the Chicago Bears, I believe that they are a playoff team based on its roster, based on what they've built. But the idea that Caleb Williams and that can have any growing pains is nonsense. It's going to happen, even with those wins and some of those losses that CJ Stroud went through, I'm sure he was learning. He was learning while he was winning. He had a zero touchdown three interception game last year. Oh. Yeah, which is unbelievable when you think about what his numbers ended up at. What happens? Like, these young guys are not going to be perfect. CJ Stroud-- And he missed two games. I mean, even-- and Jordan loves not the same thing. He's not a rookie, but he comes in and spends eight weeks as one of the worst quarterbacks in football. But as things kind of grow in jail as an offense, final 10 weeks of the season, there was no one in the league better. Yeah, it wasn't at all, OK? Right, but if God forbid, our guy Caleb is one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL through eight weeks, this city, where we've never had one, they're all going to turn on him. You watch. Yeah, I think people need to be more patient. Like, I've even been thinking about-- I'm not afraid, but like, I'm a little worried about the Titans game. Last year, against the Packers, all the excitement, bears get creamed at home. I walked in that Monday morning. Cap, first thing I said to you was, this season's over, and that quarterback can't play. If that happens this year, and Tennessee walks in here and beats the Bears, I'm not going to feel like either the season's over or the quarterback can't play. Because it's game one. You can't overreact to whatever happens. Right. No, I don't feel any pressure to be really good any soon. I think my mindset is to be really good really soon. But I have to do the things, obviously, to put myself in that position. I have to be a great teammate. I have to show up. I have to work. I have to learn all the stuff. I have to, you know, protection and all the calls and all of it to be able to put myself in positions that I plan on being in, and want to be in. So I think a lot of hard work comes from it. But, you know, I don't put, you know, expectations or, as people say, pressure on myself. Caleb Williams with Well and Sylvie. Yeah, and as I said to you yesterday, it was a great interview. And he just, he's been built for this. This was, did you know that he lived in a apartment by himself in high school? Yeah, I read about that while he was in college. Because they wanted him to go to a better high school with a better program, because this is what his life was planned out to be. And his parents trusted him to that level. He's an incredibly mature young man. And he is built for this moment. Is he gonna have hiccups? Absolutely. He's gonna throw a pass. He'd be like, what the heck is he looking at? Because he's a rookie. Some people put their plan out on a vision board. Some, get an apartment. 312-332-ESPN-332-3776 is our telephone number. (upbeat music) 312-332-3776 is our phone number. Look, Cap, squirrel. Ugh, squirrel. - With you until 10. - Locked in, kid. Oh yeah, until 10 and then Greedy comes in followed by Black in a Dollar 12, Jesse and Sylvie. At three o'clock, followed by White Sox baseball, double header, one at four, the nightcap at 7.30, right here on ESPN 1000. You know, you and I, since you were off on Monday, we have not talked about Coach Prime, Deon Sanders. - He's out of his mind. - You and I go way back with Deon Sanders because we watched him as a kid in high school. - I actually worked on a book with him. He was part of a book that I was writing on the recruiting process and he was with the Reds and we sat down and did extensive stuff and he was super nice. I'm like, wow, super cool. - Man, has he become a brand and a little too sensitive? - Yes, kids, Deon Sanders played baseball and football at the same time. - And the same day? - It's the same day, which is break the internet that happened today in 2024. Otani playing wide receiver and playing for the Dodgers on the nightcap. - You're correct. - Could you imagine? So Sean Keeler from the Denver Post was on sportsman like talking about Deon Sanders. We should probably talk about him, Cap, because here before even the season starts, he has a problem with CBS sports. Not CBS sports, not CBS because of 60 minutes CBS, the network, but what's been written on CBS regarding his coaching prowess or lack thereof with the Colorado buffaloes. And now there's a writer in the Denver Post apparently that also is not happy with Deon Sanders. So, let's go back in time and hear from Deon talking about the CBS reporter. - Next guy. - Eric Christensen with CBS Sports Colorado. Tyler, I'm not doing none with CBS. Next question. - Joe Rigo, my honest voice wrote you. - This is above that. I ain't got none to do with you. I got love for you. I appreciate to respect you. I ain't got none to do with you. They know what they did. - I'm here at Denver, not national. - You are who you are, the CBS and CBS. - All right. - Joe Rigo, I ain't got none to do with you. I respect you. I just want to tell you that I'm looking you and I as a man. I respect you. I got love for you. But what they did was foul. - Okay. Shay, to be clear, CBS Sports had a low ranking for the Colorado buffaloes program coming into the season and wrote about Deon, correct? - Yeah, Tom Franelli, CBS national wrote up the coach power rankings at Deon ranked in the 60s nationally, second worst in the big 12. - To be clear, like CBS Sports Denver has as much to do with CBS Sports.com as we do with ESPN.com. AKA really nothing. - Really, that's fair. That's all fair. But Sean Keeler from the Denver Post spoke his piece to Peter Burns and Courtney Cronin about the biggest problem behind the scenes with the Colorado program. - It's fear. It's as you said, it's fear all around. And it's fear of people who are on the academic side and know better and committed to this. I think, and I wrote this, I think two weeks, 10 days ago, whenever it was, when we had the testy exchange at CU's fall media day, that Deon is starting to lash out at people, which strikes me as a sign of fear that something good may be on the football side. I don't expect that. They got guys. Man, do they have guys. Travis Hunter, he's the real deal. Shadoor Sanders is the real deal. We're gonna find out if Jordan Seaton is the real deal. There are guys. But I think if I were a Buff fan, and this is the part that everyone's kind of suppressing here locally, and the reaction to this nationally has been very, very different to the reaction locally, which has been fascinating. I guess as a journalist to watch, but less fascinating when you're the guy getting the hate mail. This is really weird. Oh, it's happening today. Okay, great. But fear is the full order word I keep coming back to. And it's everywhere. I think players are afraid. I think coaches are afraid because they saw what happened to the first year staff. I think media are afraid. And I think Colorado administrators are afraid. And if they win, it'll all be justified. And if they don't, grab your popcorn, which you probably will anyway, but definitely keep it handy. - Sean Tiller from the Denver Post, who is by the way banned from asking questions at the Colorado Press Conference. - Correct. And so Rick Morrissey wrote today in the Sun Times, the headline, prime example of idiocy. Colorado banning columnist for asking questions of Sanders just plain wrong. Now look, do I think Dion's right here? No, I would tell him. Be vanilla in your answers to him. He asks you a question, answer the question, and move on, period. Coach talk about the defense that you faced against, you know, whatever, North Dakota State, wherever they play this week, North Dakota. They got after our quarterback. They did a really good job at, you know, some stunts or whatever. Next, that's it. - Yes. - Don't call attention to this and look petty and you're better than that, Dion. You're better than that. - You can't have a quote, and you know, Dion's very quotable. You can have a quote that says, confidence is my natural odor, and then show a lack of confidence in yourself and the program, in which you say, I can't take the heat. And so I'm not gonna let this reporter ask any questions. First of all, I'm disappointed in Dion in this regard, but I'm actually more disappointed in Colorado for allowing this to happen. I understand that Dion is a golden goose, but Dion is not gonna be there for a decade cap. He's just not. If the Colorado program turns around under his watch, he's on to something bigger. - He's gone. - A bigger program in college or the NFL. That's where he's going. 'Cause he's taking that staircase effect of taking care of an HBCU, winning their Jackson State, going to Colorado, turn it around, and then moving on to Florida State, or moving on to an NFL job. My point is, is that you can't have all this swagger and all this spotlight and talk big. And then when someone says, yeah, your program isn't very good. And it's based on facts, the one lost record. And then you say, that guy can't speak at the press conference. And at one point, just banning everything that had the CBS eye on it. That's not right. - Agree? - That's not right. You can do it. I'm just saying that that's not right. You can't be, look at me, look at my program, look at me, where the best way. And then when someone says, hey, you know what? You had a slippery slide to a lot of losses toward the end of the season. And I'm going to write about that. Oh, that's hating? That's facts. So I would just say for him, is what you just laid out? You may not like a writer or two or something that was written about you, but you still have to answer the question. The way you want to answer it is that looking petty and small. - Okay, what if we find out, like I haven't gone back and read Sean Keeler's stuff, what if Sean Keeler had crossed the line and gotten ridiculous. I'm not saying he did. I still think Dion takes should take every question. - And they wrote up what he said. The quotes were like, he called him the Bruce Lee of BS was something he said. It was normal columnist stuff. It was a columnist just using kind of hyperbolic language and hitting a coach pretty hard who went four and eight. You went four and eight. - Yeah. - He kind of got to take your medicine. - I don't do not disagree with you at all. Get all the acclaim, get all the big ratings. You get entertainers and celebrities on your sideline and you go four and eight. And your football team just was not good down the stretch. And so you got to find a way to turn it around. But again, he was on the out of pocket podcast with Robert Griffin the third. He's bet he's resurfaced. He's got his own podcast. And he just talks about how he just thinks that it's not right that people are talking about him. He's like, amen, you get the good and the bad with this job. The bad right now is that you're four and eight and may not win five games this year. Look at it, you've seen the schedule? - Yeah. - May not win five games this year. - He better not lose the North Dakota this week. - So. - In here Rick Morrissey, who I like. You know, I like. - Sure. - He's a good guy. - Sure. - He said he talks about sometimes media outlets have to take a stand. Today it's Keeler tomorrow with somebody else. And he talks about a boycott. A boycott wouldn't be good business for anybody. It wouldn't be good for Colorado, which is already embarrassed itself. He said a boycott would take courage as we know there's a short supply of that in Boulder these days. You could lose readers, viewers, listeners. But once in a while, principles more important than good business. I disagree with them. You can be honest. You could say once again, he tried to ask a question that was banned. You can't boycott. People aren't reading newspapers now. - Yeah. - Come on. - That I disagree with Rick there. No point would be made. There's no upside. - I don't know what the number is on your side, Che. But I got Colorado minus 10 against North Dakota State. And the total 60 and a half that we played in Boulder. We'll see what happens in that game on Saturday. All right, coming up. Cubs are over 500. They're over 500. - You care? We talk about it next on Captain Jay Hood. - Yes, we do. - Excuse me. I just ate an almond. (beeping) - Here's to Dave's headline, headline with Captain Jay Hood. - Good day for the cubbies yesterday. Bloods in the pirate, nine to five. They just keep finding ways to stay alive. - Take that, Toby. Toby was firing on me last night or yesterday. - He was? - He's like, I heard at the cat man coming out saying the Cubs are still alive. - Still alive, Toby. - Oh. - Eight and three, they're last 11. They jump up in class today. Still the pirate. Paul Skeens is on the hill against our guy, Kyle Hendricks 11.35. This morning-- - We've not heard that. - Yeah, I'm not. - Oh. White Sox allowed Garrett crochet to start, throw four pitches and then they suspended the game because of inclement weather. Not real smart strategy, but crochet will not pitch today. Sox and Rangers right here on ESPN 1000. You got a double dip. - Peppa. - You have Jesse and Silby from three to four and then the White Sox and the Rangers with two ball games. Let's go. K-bore. (cheering) - Follow Chicago's home for sports on Twitch at ESPN 1000 Chicago. Captain Jay Hood are back on Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. - Captain Jay Hood on ESPN 1000 and screaming on the ESPN Chicago app. 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 7, 7, 6, our phone number. So the Cubs got the job done yesterday, Cap. And they won in a big fashion. - Yes, they did. Down to nothing after giving up two runs in the first justed steel settled down, gave you five solid innings of two run baseball. Saya Suzuki tied the ball game with a two run home run. You had a home run from Dan Robinson. You had a, thank you, John. They had a big night again for Miguel Amaya. - Cubs win, baby. - Nine, five. You're fine. - You know, the ultimate take that is, Dan Spies Swanson, after you ranted about him on the air, he's turned it around. As any, you've been killing them a lot and now look at him. He's had several multi-hit ball games. He's trying to hit the ball hard. - Good, where were you for the first four months of the season? - He's got two home runs in the month of August. He's got three home runs in, no, a little more. Three and eight games. He's got three home runs in eight games. - That's what it says here. I got two home runs and I got 20 hits in the month of August for a Dan Spies Swanson. - He had a grand slam two nights ago. He's got home runs in two straight days. Let's go, Dan Spies. You're better than that. - Well, I mean, it took you to turn it around. In the month of August, Cap, Slashline is 273-37 and 432 is OPS of 770. I know it's not the numbers that you want, but it's an improvement from what we saw. Got it in July and in June. It's June, by the way. So he's turning it around. - It's June. Nope, it's not. It's late August. - Yeah, point of fact about Pete Crowe Armstrong, it looks like to throw your way. So in the 1980s, Pete Crowe Armstrong would be at the top of your lineup. He'd be a flea or a weaver called him, right? - Yeah, he would bun his way on and then he would steal second and third and someone would get him over and get him in. That guy there is not an eighth place hitter. He is now in this ball club, Cap, but he's a guy. Oh, God, this guy outside. My God, I can eat dinner on top of his head. He's so short. - Oh, what? - Cap, I'm just saying that that guy, Pete Crowe Armstrong, I don't know what his Latin life is in 2025. That's not an eighth place hitter. - No, and I think Pete Crowe Armstrong will be moved up in the lineup next year. They do him, but he's got to earn his way there. Just let him continue to have good at bats. - That guy, I mean, think about the fastest guy you've seen in vaguely baseball. Pete Crowe has to be in the team photo. That's ridiculous, that kind of speed. - He's back and fast as behind, I think, Ellie Day-Le-Cruise. - That's ridiculous, that kind of speed. - It's crazy. - Let it get into a gap, and that becomes, for everybody else, it's just a routine double. It becomes a triple with him. He's busting his ass. You know why? Don't want to go back to the buses in Iowa, that's why. Now, that motivation of you running hard is because I want to be on the charter. I don't want to go back there. - Correct. I want to stay in these nice Ritz Carlton's and four seasons where we go. - And let me just tell you, another baseball aside. - Pete Crowe. - There's a jag bag in there who just fires on. - Oh my God. - On hobby every day. - Damn. - Guy missed a month with a lumbar spine inflammation. Now he's been shut down, he's going to have major hip surgery. He's just been out there trying to gut through it. And that guy in here-- - He ain't happy by his boot. - Damn, has he had that for three years? - You watch, he's going to be a bad player. - Oh my God, do you're telling me for three years when he's been the worst player in baseball the whole time? He's been battling that? Wow. - He probably has lost three seasons gutty player, wow. - Yeah, he is. - Hey, how about the breaking NFL news, just now you see this? - No. - You don't play the sounder? - It's not sounder worthy, I don't think. The Dallas Cowboys are signing Dalvin Cook to be a running back on their team. What year is it? Their running back room is going to be Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook. - See. - Oh God. - See. - Do not bet the Cowboys, Kaplan. - I'm not. - I don't believe you. - I do not have any tickets on this. - Not yet. - I think they're pretty good, kid. What do you think? - No. - You'll have a ticket and it'll be exposed on the air 'cause you can't help yourself. - No, I'm not betting them. - You just, you said this summer they're pretty good, kid. That's what you kept telling us. - Well, they have talent on their team, but I am not going to buy a ticket on them. They're not winning anything. - How about Buffalo? - Do not have a ticket on them either. - Don't believe you. - That's the truth. - Why? - I don't believe you. - That is the truth. Let's slip out. It'll be next week, Shay. We're going to go around the NFL, make our selections or whatever. It sounds like, I like Buffalo again. Take that, kid. Okay. Just throw money out the window. That's what you like to do. Just throw money out the window. - Nope. I'm going to pass on them. At this point in time, I do not have a ticket on it. - Oh, this, yeah. Did you hear that? Well, in this political season? - Well. - At this point in time, that's not going to, you know the roster, that's not going to change. Either you're going to bet on them or you won't. - I'm not. I'm not betting them. - Shay, do you believe him? - I might bet them. So I'm kind of starting to think the cap might. - I'm not. At this point in time. - So bad. - Cody, you can save the Buffalo cheese for me 'cause I think I'm going to take it again. (laughs) Not for the Super Bowl, no way. But- - I understand. - For the division or wind total, right? - Wind total and division. - I kind of like them both ways. - I've heard that about you. - Oh, come on. (laughs) - The cap and Jhood cut of the day is around the corner of the Chicago's home for sports. - It's a bad take. (upbeat music) - The cap and Jhood are bad. - We are back, baby. We are back. We are back. - Last day. - All Chicago's home for sports. ESPN Chicago. (upbeat music) - And now time for the cap and Jhood cut of the day. Okay? (laughs) - Brought to you by (laughs) - Go ahead. - Go, David, go ahead. - Take house. - On the sound of North side is Chicago River. - It's simply magnificent. - Jay Moore. - David. - Yeah. - John Moore. - But okay. - Sean. - Oh! - Whatever. - He's not born. - Okay then you're born. - All right. (upbeat music) - David. - So I was laying on the couch. - In the dark? - In the dark. - Mm-hmm. - With my phone attached to a backup battery, like a charging battery. - Yeah. - And goodness, I am a fanatic about charging those. And I had a flashlight propped up on the couch so I could have a little light in the room 'cause I don't like sleeping in the dark. (laughs) - God. Oh my goodness. (laughs) - What are you laughing at? What's so funny about that? - You're gonna go to the light light and plug it into the wall. - I have a night light. (laughs) - Hey. - I do not like A, sleeping alone. (laughs) And B, in the dark. - In the dark. (laughs) - Oh my God. (laughs) - I don't like sleeping in the dark. - Dang it! (upbeat music) - It's your home, not the fister. - I've been walking. - No one's gonna come get ya. - I sleep with the curtains or the shades wide open so that the light screams him. - This gets better, folks. - You can't be cute. - You are a child. (laughs) - Christ. (laughs) - God. (laughs) - You're an adult. I don't like to sleep. What the world's on? (laughs) - Oh God. - Someone will get me. - Program directors from my past will come haunt me. Ooh. - And that's all, folks. - The Captain J. Hood Cut of the Day. - Brought to you by David Flaw, Matt Moore in Chicago. - Cut steakhouse. It is simply the best. The patio. Second to none. It's right along the river, north side of the Chicago River on La Salle. - Today is National Red Wine Day. - Did I tell you it's on La Salle, North side of the Chicago River? - Absolutely. - Okay. - Today is National Red Wine Day. - I will be having some tonight. - I'm drinking again. - Tonight. - I'm not having a very heavy drinking hand this summer. - Mindy is not. - But look at a lot. - You're gonna be home? It will be me? I will have a nice bottle of Pinot Noir tonight. - Mm-hmm. - That would be me. - The whole bottle, probably, right? No, I'm not knowing you. - Uh, I don't know if I... - There you go. Work tomorrow. - Kill off, though. (growls) - So what's the point? - What's the problem with that? - One can, Dan, down in a bottle of red wine. - Who's gonna drive you upstairs to the bedroom? - You're gonna be a long-troll to work in the morning. - I think I'll only have two glasses. I mean, I'm not at your level. - Big glasses? I'm sure it'll be big glasses. - Like a wine glass, I'll have two glasses of wine. What's the big deal? - Two goblets. - Two wine goblets. - Uh-huh. - Yeah. - Hey, man, as long as you get a designated driver to take you upstairs, I think it's fine. - That's it. - 'Cause you won't be able to get there stumbling. - We're doing a lot of that lately. People know, the audience knows you've been drinking a lot lately. - You've been drinking a lot. Yeah, you can always tell. - The bad voice in the morning, coughing. People know that that's a byproduct of drinking too much. It's not usually, you know, nice and clear, but people know. - I'm at the lake house. Nothing else to do up here, kind of boring. Huh, there's a bottle. - Take that. - This is tasty. - I'll have another. - And another. - And another. It's not like I'm driving. Don't be judging me, dogs. Oh, look at me like that. What's up? Hey, Maverick, take that. - It's every night. Buddy, he's gonna install one of those chairs that just motorized up the stairs. Like a sickness, it doesn't. So he doesn't stop, we'll go into bed. (laughing) - Come on, dog, just the slow ride up. Like he's Libya Soprano. (laughing) - Hello. - We've made our journey. - Get down, there we go. - Take that. - Hey, Maverick, would you like to have a little Pino grisio? - I'll pour a little bit in your bowl. Mindy won't know. - There you go. Take that. - Wanna watch Top Gun with me? (laughing) I got it. I can see it. Nothing wrong with that, Cap. Because you're at home, and it's your home. - My crib. - That's exactly right. So that's, I don't judge you for it. As long as you've got a designated driver. - Right up the stairs. - To get you off the couch, right upstairs. - That is it. - Isn't that right, Dean? - It is right. You know, I live right down the street from that woodman's that was featured in Hard Knocks last night, guys. - Yep. - This cereal aisle is insane. The first time I ever went inside there, this is a true story, hoodie. I was on my way to Cap's house before I moved out here to drop him off food. But yeah, that's bad ass bad ass. Go to Cap's house, drop him off food. I drove past this thing, and I'm like, I gotta go in there on my way back. On my way back, I took one step inside hoodie, and I was like, if I take another step inside here, I'm not gonna get back to the pork store for hours. So I couldn't go in. - It is the massive place. - That's crazy. - They've been in there. - It's nuts. But I called most of this, I'll tell you guys really quick. I called the chosen one, Tyler. I see a few months ago. I believe this is living on his own for Caleb. Mature beyond his ears. All this stuff doesn't get talked about enough. It's like, he's got the money, guys. There's no pressure. It's like, Cass says the general used to tell Tommy, you're gonna get hit anyways. You might as well catch the ball. You're like Beige's dad said. All these guys are young and rich. They got hot girlfriend. Caleb is never gonna be running DoorDash like Desmond Frickin' Ritter. (laughing) - We thank you. We thank you for listening and calling in and being part of the program, you know. - That's cool. - Cappage hood. Thank you, Jay Moore. Thank you, Shay. Let's do "Dule Breakers" Thursday tomorrow. So long, everybody. - Take that. - From Chicago.
