The Craig Way Show

Looking back at the 2004 Texas Football season

Before the 4th & 5, there was the 2004 Rose Bowl. Before that, it was the 4th and 18 against Kansas. If not for Vince Young's conversion, we may never have the 2005 National Championship. Craig and Cam look back on the '04 season and the last time Texas and Michigan played.

Standard messaging and data rates, but just to finish up where what I was saying that wouldn't. In response to CB's tax, he said they needed to come back to be Kansas. Absolutely. That fourth and 18 play. CB, I'm in complete agreement with you on that because I've been on record for some time saying it and I will say it again and again and again. Everything that happened in 2005, the national championship, the great run, the unbeaten run, the big 12 championship, the win over USC, the Rose Bowl, the national championship. I don't know. I'm not saying unequivocally the answer is no. I'm just saying the odds would be against all of those things that happened in '05 happening the way that they did had they not converted fourth and 18 of Kansas the year before because here's the sliding door moment. They're down 23, 13 with about three and a half minutes to go at Kansas. Vince Young leads him back to get a touchdown at 23, 20. They get to get a stop. There was an offensive pass interference call that Mark Mangino vehemently criticized the officiating about after the game and said stuff about, "We know what this is all about. Like there was a conspiracy for Texas. He got a $10,000 fine and apologized for the comments afterwards." But when Texas got the ball back, they still had to convert their inside a minute to go fourth and 18. If they had not converted that and Vince didn't, it would seem to be three strides really. He just kind of glided for 18 yards, but he did have to step out of the arms of the big 12 conference defensive player of the year, Kansas linebacker Nick Reed had to step out of a tackle and he did, but he just kind of easily cruised then, then he hit Tony Jeffrey along the sidelines for a first down, then of course he hits the game winning touchdown pass to Jeffrey and Texas wins the game. Without that win, which doesn't happen, if they don't convert fourth and 18, they don't go to the Rose Bowl. They go, "I think to the Alamo Bowl that we're going to go." And by not going to the Rose Bowl, by going to the Alamo Bowl, they probably don't start the next season at number two in the country. The magic of the Rose Bowl and what Vince did, and then asking him, "This is where the National Championship game will be next year, give me the answer, we'll be back." That deal, I don't know that it happens if they don't convert fourth and 18, because if they don't convert fourth and 18, they lose the game. They didn't have enough timeouts left to stop the club, Kansas would have run out the clock. And then they don't go to the Rose Bowl to be Michigan, have the dramatic ending, and it set the stage for next year. So in answer to what CB was talking about, yes, that was the ups and downs in that Kansas game alone on that cold day. And what was also brought up, well, Matthew's brought this up when we were speaking to the luncheon last week, Kansas basketball had a game, a Saturday day game at Allen Fieldhouse. And for most of the contest, like a lot of Kansas football games back then, and really until just a couple of years ago, very few people came out to Kansas games. But because to Kansas was up 10 points in the fourth quarter, Ward trickled amongst the students over to Allen Fieldhouse, that hey, they might upset Texas a whole bunch of students have migrated down to Memorial Stadium there. And it got real loud. All of a sudden they're late in the contest. Will was telling that story and he was on the field playing in that game. And Texas found a way to win that game. And then they went on from there and, you know, they had lost the 12-nothing game to Oklahoma that year that it looked like they were on the verge of being able to get out of that. And then, but then got to go to the Rose Bowl and won that contest while Oklahoma, which won the big 12, went to the Orange Bowl and got beat by USC 55 to 19 and USC won the National Championship that year. And of course they were the favorite again when Texas beat them in that Rose Bowl in the next year. But I don't know that any of that happens or happens the way that it does had they not converted forth in 18. It's just a thought about that. And I would imagine that when we're up in Michigan, we'll talk about a lot of things that happen in that '04 season that culminated in that win over the Michigan Wolverines. We'll have Will Matthews on talking about that, you know, obviously in our coverage, our coverage here on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone will begin at eight o'clock Saturday morning with Long Orange game day with Cameron Parker and Mike Hardball, Harge and Mark Henry.
