Listen back to Paul Cooney, Barry Ferguson and Peter Grant as they talk all things Scottish football.

This is the Goradio Football Show. Listen anytime, whatever you get, your podcasts. Call 08/08/17/17/700. Good evening Paul Cooney, end the sunshine with Barry Ferguson and Peter Grant. Well, and Wednesday night, the big two are here together, looking forward to the game last night against Poland. But we all know how it finished. Scotland 2, Poland 3. How did it happen? What did you think of it? Barry, first. It was 2, 2, 95 minutes of going and we managed to lose the game. Such a huge disappointment. Yeah, it was a, it was a sword wanted to take Paul. Obviously going two goals down in the first half. I thought the team done extremely well. We got back in it in the game. I thought after the first goal that Poland scored, I thought it gave us a, it gave us a good shake and I thought we dominated the first majority of the first half after that. We started the second half in the best way possible. We're barely getting that goal after 30 seconds or so. And then we, we really grew into the game. Paul and you're going to need the down seconds and they break away. You're thinking to Grant Hanley. Initially, he does really, he defends the situation pretty well and shows him the line. And then he just makes that mistake at a diving in from such an experienced defender. You could see it in his face. He knew he'd, he'd done the wrong thing and listened Paul and obviously slotted the penalty away. So it ended disappointingly, but there's less than there's positives to take out the game. I thought we were more aggressive in the press. I thought Billy Gilman and McTormany and the Madeleine of Pitch were outstanding. But my move on to Sunday, which is going to be a difficult game against Portugal and, and Ben Faker. It sure is over there. Ed and Lisbon. Peter, we're two goals down as you know, at halftime, but we'll come back in the second half. Yeah, I think Stevie may be scratching his head, Paul. When I look back at the Euros and I think that's the way we should have played in the Euros and I don't mean the system. I'm not talking before at the back and anything. I'm just talking that energy. We talked about more bodies in the box playing further up the pitch because if, and you're sometimes you're going to be popped to be good players and Paul and done it a few times. But the players we have, apart from Billy Gilmour now, we don't really have what I'd call playmakers. You know, really it was Karl McGregor who had before that. So I'll look at it now and I think we can maintain the ball. The other day there, we've got energy McTormany and McTormany and McTormany can rest. They all can run and support the front men. They can all do that. So why didn't we do that against Germany? And the other thing was the set plays. It was great to see, obviously somebody that's a job to make do the set plays, but it was great to see Scott McTormany back in the middle receiving the set play coming in because simple things like I could not believe through the Euros. And I think that's the thing Stevie must look back at when he's been analysing the Euros with certain things that went wrong. And he must be scratching his head at simple things like because against Germany, I think it was a punch of the nose you could attain if you'd had to throw it a real go at it because good players are going to play at times. But when you've stood back and been beat the way we were, that gives us a little bit of concern. And I think last night they did not really well. And you look at the three goals, Paul, three bad mistakes. Kind of a clean slack pass in a Balagalma. Obviously Rousin, I thought it was really clumsy from Rousin. And then the one who spoke about Hanley for such an experienced defender, you don't go any ground certainly in the last seconds of the game because you know what's a player on your own, a pitch? You're going into the last few seconds a minute or whatever. So I'm sure if you look back, if he goes ever certainly avoidable. And at 2-2 we would have been kind of unlucky with that be fair and it was a great comeback. But 2-2 I think tonight would you not be saying we could have won it? Yeah, listen, if it ends up 2-2 you're happy. I know they're building a new team but at times, stages in the game, Paul and Paul popped the ball about where they'll be able to get some really good players. Zalinski, a band scan in the middle of the pitch, I thought was super hard if I could watch out and sort the player all day and all night. So yeah, that was a blow. They lose that penalty in the last seconds and again. If you want to speak with Barry and Peter, you know the number 0-8, 0-8, 17, 17, 700, hard to take Peter. And yeah, it was a good game to watch last night. Let's hear what the manager said at full time. At this moment in time it doesn't feel good anything. But think when you think back to what I said before was about building the squad and trying to bring a freshness. There were a lot of good things in the game. If you want to just report on the score line, it's negative, it's disappointing for everybody. If you want to look objectively at the performance, there are a lot of good things that we can take forward. Obviously some things that we have to eradicate from our performance and that's what we have to look to do if we can keep that positive energy around the camp that we have now. The next five games, which won't get any easier, certainly doesn't get any tougher than going to Elizabeth to play Portugal. So at the moment I just feel really disappointed for the players because I thought the reforts deserve to get at least a point out the game. So I'm sure I'll get over that disappointment tomorrow. We have to reflect on the game a little bit and then move on to the Peter. It's interesting when he says a freshness because you'll look at the squad that started the game. Kenny McLean has been around about it for a long time, not playing games. Well, Dikes wasn't available. Not been playing games either. But you look at the rest of it, they've all been playing. They've all been playing. So there wasn't a freshness around about it. I'm not really sorry, not playing much at all. He'd been playing games, Paul. You know he played in the Euros. So there's not been a change in that respect. So I'm looking at saying the freshness for me was they've done the set plays different, apart from the one they tried to work around. They're over so much. I could not believe they tried the short one and he just outside the box. He's just got to have a short there. I thought it'd have been John McGinn for sure. And I know it's small details, but that is the difference. It's a small details. I think the fact that the fact that he had the energy and allude Mick Tormany and McGinn and Christie run, instead he'd just sit and banked right in, that was a freshness more about it. Not the players, the players never come on you late on. And then I thought, well, we're throwing them one because sometimes, you know as a coach, my Barry's been there and I've been there. If you listen to too many people, you start thinking, well, I better put these guys on because they'll think me 20 minutes to go that I've got to put forward, and I thought then we started to get muddled a little bit, because you tend to be a John McGinn strength, just running and maybe he's got that goal. And as you say it too too, maybe he's the one that's going to break the box and get that shot away. But all of a sudden, I've got John sitting deeper. I didn't see any reason why he'd take Billy Gilmer off to be perfectly honest with you. Is he thinking about Sunday maybe? No, but you can still win the game. You can still win the game and also the fact is, if you're bringing on forward types players, you need people at servicing. And I'm not being disrespectful to John. John's not a playmaker. John likes that free spirit to go and have shots at goal and power forward and run forward. And that's his strength. Billy's to say, right, I can service people and off all these front guys can come on. So the freshness, but I don't really get it. I think the freshness was, as I say, the energy they showed to go and try and put under pressure, and Barry was right pulling on a good side and popped it at times. But that's going to harm Paul. It doesn't matter what team you're going to get popped against good players at times, trying to press them. But at least they tried to do it with an energy in the first period especially, and I thought they were really good at that. Yeah, but I mean, I definitely agree in the second half, the aggression and the press are really light. And granted, just mentioned, when you play against good teams at times, they're going to get through you. That means you've got to be set up really well defensively. And I agree again, McTorminate, McGinne, and Chris, they obviously played last night. You let these guys off a leash, let them just run off the ball, they caused teams problems. And I like the way we went about it last night, and hopefully going forward, that's the way we will do things. What did you think about the youngsters that came on? Maybe not so young wrinkles, not young, I know that, but it was good to see him. I would like to see him in his natural position. He did change out when Morgan came on, even under the centre of the pitch, just off. He just kind of floats. He's very elegant on the ball. He picks up great wee spaces. He's got a beautiful touch on him. Good to see him get the opportunity. Young Doc showed real enthusiasm. You can tell he's young, but do you know what? Go and give him the opportunity and time. I'm sure he'll take a lot away for that game last night, and he certainly looks wonderful for the future. Not only done well for the goal, because the pass he's led to Tony Rawlsen. It was a perfect weight. It was on it, and Tony's done excellent. They'd have the cutback for Scott McTomany. So it was a perfect weight because a couple of times he'd overrun it. Yeah, he actually tackled Tony Rawlsen. Yeah, he causes that and he uses me, and he got a sword when he's in his ankle. But listen, it's great to see young players getting an opportunity. Barry spoke about players playing in the Polish team, 19 years of age. They don't worry about age is Paul. They think if you're good enough, you know, the only one I was a bit concerned about, not seeing it was Conway. He's went to the Euros, and he said, "I want to feel sorry." Yeah, and I know and see how these forward players come down and think, "Well, listen, how's you going to get a chance?" You know, and I know that Shanklin come on, find no problem whatsoever. But I'm thinking, if I'm in the Euros squad and all of a sudden, these boys have jumped me. You know, I know they play sorry in different areas, but if you're talking about forward players, could you went and said, "Oh, well, just a little bit and play Shanklin." And Conway, maybe you get the goal. If you're going to go gung-ho in the respect to that and show people that you're showing a different side to your performance. TC up front, you'd like to have seen Tommy Conway, buddy? Yeah, I said that in Wednesday night, and I'm sure he's sitting on the bench for the straight. If he's not going to play, I'm sure he'd have expected to get on at some stage in the game. He's a different type of forward Paul, and look, listen, that mate change, sorry, and Sunday night. You might get the opportunity, because Linden, if you look at it, Linden Dykes, look, he's done my brilliant job. You need to play games with football. You could tell last night, Linden Dykes was a bit leggy because he's no played a lot of football. Obviously, nobody on the QPR team and just get the move to Birmingham. So, yeah, I would have liked to have seen him come on, but look, the three, come on, gold, Morgan and dope. They should be proud of their performance when they come on. Managed it. It's good to see a bit of freshness, that's what I like. These guys have no been really involved. I know Morgan went to the Euros, but I loved it. Young boy, dope, coming on. Listen, I don't care if all it says. I don't care about ages and granted, I mentioned it. I polished it. They had a number of boys. I mentioned a boy in the middle of the pitch. It plays with Bologna, of Bansky. 19 years of age, he looked, he'd been playing in there for about 20 years. It was fantastic, isn't it? Yeah. And Veliski, that's another one. It was only 21 or something. He's young. Yeah, they've got a young group like that. Yeah. I think, I mean, that's a new Polish team. It's a lot of new ones coming in. I think, give them a year or two, I think they could be a force of Polish. Let's hear a bit more from Stevie Clark afterwards. He's asked, how did he feel then about the performance itself? Obviously, gutted at 3.2. What did he feel though? I think if I analyze the performance, I have to be happy with the performance. So there's a small chroma comfort for a head coach in that we didn't have a lot of time to work on the training pitch. We knew the system that Poland would play would cause his one or two different issues to maybe what you would normally face. But I thought we dealt that well. I thought the team shape was good. The attitude, the energy of the players was excellent. The only thing is, if you make, like I said before, if you make small mistakes at this level, you get punished. Sure, it was there last night with these wee boys on the socials. I'd go through the ball show with Tom saying, I was gutted at the end, back to school this morning. It just gutted because it was a great crowd last night, wasn't it? Fantastic. You know, fantastic because we said the boys would need to put on a show because instead of them obviously being lifted with the supporters, the boys would need to do that. The energy showed that. They were trying to do things, OK, pulling in at the start and it goes to nothing. You're thinking, what can be anything here in the respect, because you know what it's like. We've been there, but getting the goal swell at the start of the second half was great. And it's interesting, I've spoke about it before on here, Stevie saying a little time you get to work with the team. That is a massive problem, Paul. I don't care if anybody says, how can you turn up for a national team as I keep saying on a Sunday and maybe your first train session is on Wednesday. But why did they give them a day off? It's not even that, but so are the clubs that run at Paul. Yeah, let's know we can. Is there pain in the way, G? Absolutely. And if somebody gets an injury, I'm not sure if they say if you've got to pay the full lot, as I've said before, but they have to pay money anyway, there's definitely a problem there. And that is a problem because it's small details. It can be the difference. But it's absolutely not the fact that he's saying it now. I've never heard them saying that before, but as I said, we were Wednesday afternoon by game and Thursday, but then the next one, and by the way, you're trying to think your two games. And it's difficult not to, even though you're concentrating on the first one, it's difficult not to because you've got such a quick turnaround. You've got the boys prepared for that. Who do they go to train? Who can they train? Because some of these boys obviously are going to be playing again, all these things. So most of it's on the board, not on the training pitch. And Barry will tell you it's better showing that and on the pitch doing it than it is on a blackboard. Oh, wait, oh, eight, 17, 17, 700, Tatanami, give us a call. Former Scotland captain, Barry Ferguson is here and former Scotland star Peter Grant. So everyone, I mean, it was so disappointing. And some people are on saying, well, it's typical Scotland, but actually it was a lot to like about last night Barry. I think there's a lot of positives to take out the game. Paul, I said that, but if you make mistakes and the mistakes that we made were crucial mistakes, and you get punished, that's what happens when you play against them good teams. If you take the mistakes away, I thought overall I thought we were more energetic. We were aggressive, as I said, players playing in the right positions and affecting the game. Let me talk a minute. I keep mentioning him back to him. I thought he was outstanding last night. I did. He just brings a real energy, he's up and down that pitch. He's a threat every single time Scotland go forward. And then you've joined McGann beside them. I thought Ryan Crust had done pretty well as well, and then just behind them, while I go more controlling things. He has the playmaker, isn't he? He's got me, Tommy. I mean, it's not a problem. Man United is not a problem of anyone up here, but how could they let him go? Because he looks to be at the top of his game. Well, especially in the minds, I'll say that why did you take Cassimiro off? You needed legs? I think, well, I'm not being disrespectful. Cassimiro is a bit excellent weight. That's excellent. I know he's in first class, but that's one thing he's never had. So, if you're needing legs, the one guy you've got to have, and if you want, maybe somebody sitting more disciplined, squats, not that player, I've always said that. He left him that freedom. The question I'd like to ask Barry there was, who do you think was a better team? Germany or Spain when we played them? Because I thought we went after Spain the way we should have went after Germany. And that's the thing that keeps out. And I keep, because I'm annoyed with the euros, because I expected so much more from them, you know, and I'd like to know that question. Why we sat back? Why we went on the front foot? Because I definitely think Spain are harder to play against, and we showed much more energy against them, and a different type of press, and putting them under pressure, and we saw it off Germany. And that annoys me, because if we're going to get a good start there, anything could harm any use? I think we're a better team on the front foot. Absolutely. I do. The players we have, I agree. And listen, as football, I've been involved in a lot of games granted the same. At times, teams are going to get through you. You've got to accept that. And when they do get through you, the midfield, then you've got to make sure your defence is solid and compact. But for me personally, I think Spain are a better team in Germany. And then when we went and pressed, and over at home, at hand in the crowd behind you, but we pressed, we put them under pressure. I'm talking top players, guys who are playing at the highest level, when you press your eyes players and you don't give them time on the ball, they don't like it. Well, as we had fans, it's happening, we were there in Germany. We had more in them. Absolutely. We were louder than German fans. So that's what they were looking for. And that's what energises us. Let's know, we're kidding, Paul. We're in a country, any shorts, crosses, balls in the box, attempts, tackles. Let's know, we have no Spain and we don't have the players to be spent. So let us be Scotland. So why didn't we? Why do we change? That's what I'm saying. That's what we've seen. Simple things, let us say it plays. Scott McTomb and he takes it plays for five years of a battered Harry Kane for taking corners under Roy Hodgson. And then we go and do the exact same thing with the biggest threat. We've got in the team, bigger than the centre-halfs, bigger than the centre forwards. Scott McTomb and you've got to have him in the ball. And he's in there in the back. He brought a level of that back last night. Yeah, exactly. And you can hear it. I was sitting watching it. You can hear the crowd, Big whopper and watcher too, because that's what they love, they love a bit of passion. And when we show that passion and that aggressiveness and the press, I really like us. I think we're a good team when we're like that. I think when we sit back, I think we struggle with you. You two, we sound much more up for it than we were. See the euros, it was such a disappointment because we didn't play the game that we probably play best. He's maybe just too cautious. Here's what he said though about the fans and he paid tribute to them who came out in what huge numbers it was, virtually a sell-out. Yeah, fantastic. Even in the first half when the game, the goals went against us, it always felt that the supporters were with us. The start of the second half, obviously we get the early goal, the supporters never. I think the supporters enjoy watching the team when they play like that. Obviously, they don't enjoy going home on the back here at disappointing defeat, but I think they can see that we try to do something a little bit different. We try to play a little bit different. We try to put some positive energy into the team and the supporters were fantastic in the summer. For me, the supporters when they come to hand in, they're always great. Full House. Full House tonight, they could have been a lot, they say that I'm not going to go after the disappointments they had in the summer. They've all turned up, they've got behind us, fantastic atmosphere. I'm just sorry that they're going home sad again. Interesting. We are saying Paul and I don't know why he changed it in the summer. That's the thing I was really looking forward to that Scotland team because I think that's one of their best. I'm talking with the players who have seafood playmakers like Barry and that. You want to keep the ball and Paul McStase and all that, who could good on the ball and can be that elegant. You've got a douglasia right up front. You can roll a ball into their feet and they can deal with it. Then you can play certain ways. This group of players, and it's not been disrespectful. It's an absolute fact. Callum McGregor, Billy Gellmer, or Tool, handle a ball as well as anybody. The rest of the guys have great energy, power, pace, all the things are a threat. That's the way they've got to play. This team has built on that and I'm not saying, "If you've got a completely different team, fine. You've got to find a different way to play." Because even simple things look last night. When we couldn't play out, what did we do? Off-London likes. Why does not put Scott McTomany up when we're in Germany? Call it, "You got there. We'll play off you and we'll get around about you. We'll join McGinn and Ryan, Christie," whatever. Why didn't we? That's what I'm saying. That's small details. About the ball going long for the Angus guy. We picked up, I would say, the vast majority second ball. Absolutely. Because you've got guys who have got their legs to go up and support. McGinn's McTomany's Ryan Christie's. I liked that because we mixed it up a wee bit. We tried to play out at times, but do you know what? When he times right, it's nothing going on. Sorry, we're going route one. When we did that, I don't think Paul and like that and enjoyed that. It was educated in the respect to that. It was Clipton. You know, it wasn't just a boot-up, it was actually, you know, it was put in to areas that you could get around. And that, at the city, John McGinn prefers running around in the game. Scott McTomany prefers running around in the game, the game being in front of them. And that's the way they play. So you have to play to their strengths. It's like any coaches in mind, just Paul, you have to play to your players. We'd all love to be Barcelona when they were their best. But we've never all got Barcelona players. Yeah, and I thought we'd get into some real good position settling down the left-hand side. Last night it was just that final cross into the box. Andy Robertson getting some brilliant positions. It was just that final pass, because when I was looking up and looking into the box, we did have, you had, obviously, a Lyndon Deitch, McTomany, McGinn, Christie was trying to get in there. It just wasn't a one-player sometimes, you've seen that before. It tells you about his two-mid-fielder score. Yeah, sure. Yeah, again. It's not a day when we're talking about, you know, the chopped-off goal, because they went one up and what a goal it was from Samanski. We're going to take a break, and then we're back. We're going to take some of your calls, '08, '08, '17, '17, '700, yeah, the hand-balled SLOAD. I think it was right. It was a decision. But we were having a goal. You could be on next. This is the good radio football show. Listen anytime, whatever you get, your podcast. Let's go! Sun's out in Glasgow. Peter, were you golfing today at all? We're on the team? I don't play golf. No, and I was walking on my son's door. Excellent. And that's what I was doing the day after. I've done the gym this morning. Try to keep myself at all. That's all it is. But it was a bit of a way. This is the best day I've had all summer. Fantastic, isn't it? I made a guest appearance at the gym today as well. Great variety. Just walking a bit. That was a great way. Yeah, there was no training. Just do some muscle work. I've got to find the muscle first. And, Banny, what about you? Were you on the team this morning, early? Yep. I was, to bonus, we teed off, what was it, 20 past eight? And it was like a winter's morning. And then about two hours later, it was pure, blue skies. You've got the sun, didn't you? Yeah, it's a lovely day to go. Oh, lovely day to go. Didn't it look lovely? Did it take it? You'd be there. Oh, it's hungry. Oh, no, I didn't know where you'd go. Can't laugh. Can't laugh. Can't beat it. And did you win? Of course. Of course, right? Yeah, it's a stupid question. It's Scotland didn't win last night, but there's lots to talk about and a lot to discuss. Josh was on last night. So, Josh, we've got you back on again this evening, because Bary and Peter would love to speak to you as well. You made some great points pre the game and you live, um, witness, but you're a big Scotland fan. Good evening, Josh. How are you? Good evening, Josh. Good evening. So, Josh, what did you make of it? It was a heartbreak, wasn't it? Three, two. Oh, yeah. I mean, the end result was actually got him, but I thought, you know, second half, the team spirit, the character, the never said, I attitude all of these things that you expect from a Scotland team that we may be lacking a little bit in that first half. We sort of rallied and came together. And then the Hamden atmosphere fed it, um, sort of fed it, the performance as a whole, doesn't it? I mean, like, Scotland, Tom and I was bombing as it was ruled into last night, playing off the centre forward. We played with whip, we played with energy, we played with the enthusiasm. And yeah, that, that wasn't a chance to me of a team that's not playing for this yet. That was a sign that the team is definitely buying into what the clerks do in still because, you know, it'd have been easy for them to down too, or just what I'm basically saying, because there was a bit of a toxic atmosphere from what I saw on the television in that first after Kyle to get in on the backs and probably correct rightly as well. We lost three really naive goals as well. Let's, let's, let's, let's, let's sort of balance it by saying that, you know, the, the defensive unit was, was shocking at times, but the actual play like between the thirds, there was, there was momentum behind it. There was, there was that consistency in that fluidity. And I want to ask Barry specifically about that, you know, as an esteemed midfielder for this Scotland team, Barry, you know, the likes of it, Tom and I likes him again. The world-class players, aren't we? Yeah, and you've forgotten about the Gilman as well. I've got a gravy. I think the three of them are top midfielders. And I've got a gravy. I thought the, the second half of us are going to turn all down. And then you come out in the second half and you're thinking, right, what we're going to show, I thought they showed they're able to get on this, a real willingness to go and press and harass the Polish team. And it come back from two and all down against a very good Polish team. Let's not forget that. Who had real good players as well. I just like to have an about the second half performance. Bondo's energy. There's also composure on the ball, but certainly the, the midfield three that we've just mentioned there. I think we've got a bold, the team round about that. I thought the ball just sitting in that anchor role and allowing McGinn and McTomb needs to go up and support the central striker. That's their game. That's where they will bring a lot to this Scottish team. And when we play like that last night, I think we'll win a lot more than we'll lose. Peter Grant. I agree with George in the respect to that. The ball going off the front man as well. It was clever. He was putting his board anyway. One in the first head, I say it was good knocked up there. But the Scottish boys have got so much energy as Barry spoke about as well. Because Ryan Christie can run, John McGinn can run, Scott McTombany can run. Even Kenny McLean is good enough at picking up, saying, "Bolge will be Billy," but he's self in good areas. So that's a strength for us. We can't look upon that as a weakness and try and be Spain. We are not Spain. Never will be. We don't have that type of player. So we have to use our strengths. And I think they're looking at it. That's why I have this bugbear a bit of euros. You know, because I know sometimes you can get ton over. They could have played that team. They could have went off the front and still lost five-nilly Germany. But I think that they've been an acceptance to it. You know what I'm saying? Because we had to go. I just think this, because we just faded and died really against Germany. And that was the big disappointment more than anything else. And I think, I agree with George in the respect that the Scottish fans, that's all they want. They want you to be brilliant. They want you to pass the ball well. They want you to go off the front. They want shorts and targets we spoke about. But if you play with an energy and a commitment and create opportunities, steady weight in an opposition commute, because that is not a strength of me. Don't have the types of players. So I agree with George and the crowd deserve great credit, because the players lifted them. They're scoring right away at the start of the second half. We've talked about Billy Gellmard going to go. Scored McDonald. Billy's a deeper midfield player. But it just tells you bodies were getting in the box. That's the difference we've never had. Do you know what else I liked last night, Granny? And I'm sure George will agree. Same way we were going to press, wasn't it? Individually. It was collectively. We were going in packs with 3 and 4. And same way we were putting them under pressure. And as I said, same way you put good players under pressure. Sometimes they'll make a mistake. And I thought we forced Poland into making some mistakes last night. And don't be embarrassed Paul if they pass round you. Because that's going to happen. But we've all been there. I mean, I've been used to playing a year or many years ago for myself. I used to think there was extra players on the pitch. They were going to press and you were thinking, because we played with two wingers at that particular time. It's about two central midfield players. So I used to think it's at 5v2. And I know how difficult this is, but some times you've got to stay there, because it's going to happen. But then, even you're doing like it, and you can get these boys with energy they have, then it becomes a problem for them. Because they've all went to attack you. And Stevie Clark spoke about it before the game. He said, "Paul and play we advanced wingbikes." So that means a space to hit them. And we've got the boys that could hurt them. And that was proven with the midfielders getting the goals. I just think we've got to focus on our strongest part of the team. And I believe it's centrally. And midfield is packed with Wally. And we need to have a system that really suits him. And I thought last night at times, we barely just anchored in the middle of the pitch. We came in to McLean, just allowing John McGinn and Scott McTomb. And it wouldn't take off and let them off a leash. And do you know what? Sometimes they might no get the ball. They might no get that. Flick on. Or the ball might no fault with them. But you know what? But a better team and might play like that. And we certainly showed that in the second half. Josh, what else are you thinking for Peter and Barry? So I was going to ask Barry as well about Gilmore and McTomb and they both going over to an athlete. And I've been that sort of like familiarity with maybe each other through the club performances. Do you think that will further harness that partnership? And really get it clicking. And as I've said, the familiarity. I'm playing in a different culture, learning sort of a different style of playing football. You know, it's more kick and rush in the Premier League to an extent. It's a lot faster and a lot more. You have to be that bit more aware. Whereas you're thinking Italy, they will get that bit more time on the ball to sort of create things from the back and build things. So do you think that that can transfer into the foundations of what we saw last night, basically, to improve and develop? Yep. I think it's only going to benefit the national team. Both Billy and Scott McTomb and again over to Enapley. I really do. It's more technical probably and that way. And as I said, I just think, Enapley, I've got a bargain. I think it's just over £35 million for both of their players. And you were amazed that Billy Gilmore was only one of that. £10 million. And Scott McTomb and £25 million. Now I'm watching Manchester United at the weekend and they could have been doing my Scott McTomb and in the middle of that pitch. I just think both of them going over there, I think they'll go up a level or two. And as I said, that can only be good for us as a national team. Yeah, never in support of Joe. Yeah, massive, massive, massive, blue and all. Do you think Scott McTomb and he'll be the Qantas Fellini? Because I think that's what he's going to be because he's not, Scott's not a ball-playing midfielder. Billy Gilmore is. Scott's our runner and Qantas team loves energy conjures run. He wants that. He brings the boys off even during the five of the season, does 100 job, doesn't all that with them. Because John Terry complained about it, not complaining about it, spoke about it. The fact he was in at seven o'clock in the morning getting a massage because his legs were so sore for every day he's training. And McTomb and he's built for him. And I just think he could be that Fellini, the extra midfield player in Italy. But making that run, he supports the striker because he plays without one striker and it's going to be like Aku. So he's got the power up the top end of the pitch. McTomb and Aaron, they support him. Billy Gilmore, Ennis, and being that midfield player who's going to be that creator. And I think that's going to benefit both of them. And it's plenty of their strengths. And that's why I'm talking about a manager playing a team and individual strengths. John, how good does it seem players go at your different leagues? It's magnificent. Yeah, Genova haven't really had a different line means, a different culture. I just believe when players do that, I do think they go up a level or two, they'll become a, not just a better football player, but they'll learn a lot of life skills as well. And I just think it's a brilliant move by Napoli. And probably inspire, especially for McTomb. And if you go from Manu, where do you go? You know, in England, he wasn't going to go to an Arsenal or a Man City or whatever. It's a great move going to Napoli. And Napoli need him because they haven't won the title. But in Tennessee, Paul, you play there as well as support us with the finals. You know, the man's a quarantine. I mean, because he falls with everybody, you know what I mean? The man's, he's players. I think, in Scott McTomb, he'll grasp that. I don't know, Billy, that fortune of a new Scott a little bit through the Scotland stuff. You could just say he'll just live with that. And he's professionalism the way the man's if he's training. All these things come to love that. And that's why I think you'll be a massive player for him. And Billy will just learn as Barry says, the culture he's playing in Italy against top. But look at Lewis. Lewis is a very big example. See? Yeah. What a prime example. He likes to, you know, he was part of getting Scott McTomb in there in the Scotland. Yeah. Can I just say something about Scott McTomb in it? I don't think it was appreciated at Manchester United. He wasn't. No, absolutely not. And why do you think that was Barry? Maybe home grown and they like names, they like to go and spend fortunes on midfielders. I thought they had a player that could pretty similar to Dan Fletcher, remember Dan Fletcher when he was at Manchester United? I played with Dan Fletcher at Scotland. And until we actually train with a guy and see how he just holds himself the way he acts as a footballer, he was a top player. Yeah. And you can see why Sir Alex Ferguson played him in all the big games. I remember that. Maybe you'll correct me here, but I remember when you can Scott come in at first. And I could see certain people looking at him as if they say, because as I say, he's not a playmaker. Yeah. And I could see people looking and think as if they say, he's only in the squad because he's man United. If he'd been playing for command or whatever, he doesn't have to be in the squad. That's the way I felt some of them were looking at him. But then you see strength. Yeah. And once you know his strength to get the best from hand. You can handle the ball. Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely. But I'm not saying he's going to be a receiver, open it out and be in parallel. He wants to run. And listen, if there's one guy you want to run and get in that box, it's him. Yeah. Because he scores goals, he's a massive, massive threat. And that's, you know, the quantity's daft. He's been running a bit again for a long time. And he knows he can run. And Lukaku, you've just got a gamble because you don't know if he's going to control the question. Yeah. He's 123 games for a man United down Fletcher, 18 goals. Josh, what are you thinking for Sunday then? I mean, we're still talking about last night, but I'll be asking Barry and Peter for the teams. What do we do? But what do you feel for Sunday? Well, I mean, we fought some of the whole nation's league group, which basically we'd much rather be playing these teams than we would the nation beat teams. So we've actually, like, on the card shoot, we've actually improved this team to the extent where we now get to face this opposition. And we should relish the challenge. Like, don't sort of go in on the back thought. You know, a lot of people are pessimistic around facing the likes of Portugal, but we proved it in the the Orioles qualifiers, didn't we, again, Spain, against Norway, when the chips are down sometimes, and we execute that game plan really well. Like the lads summed it up perfectly there, like the actual game plan that we've got through that midfield, the energy and industry. That's got to be honest, but I also think we've got to defend a lot better, haven't we? This is in general terms. If you defend like that, that against 99% the teams, you're going to, you're going to concede that goal. So, you know, for Stevie, it's about sort of like regrouping and focusing on what this team can do well, but also based on that foundation of, let's try and keep it tight at the back. You've got, you've got a 39 year old Cristiano and Aldo, it's the oldest nine, wouldn't you? So, it's, it's, it's, it's still a live spot. It's still got the, the, the, the, the, the brilliance and the technique in and around the box. So we have to try and limit it the best we can, but also, I'll have that threat on the counter attack as well. Like, we can't just sit in deep, like, you know, the, the German game in the oral, which was a final example of perhaps what not to do against the top team. So we've, we've got to learn the lessons and learn, and quick as well, because the games come second fast, don't they? Sure do. They'll be off there tomorrow, buddy. Josh, what important of us happening with the toffees? Well, we've got to know. Yeah, we've got to go half an hour off. I couldn't believe that. I couldn't believe that at the weekend. I'm thinking to know that, that's name, obviously, getting off, getting a not a win, sorry, I should say, under the belt, but then I see it at full time. I couldn't believe it. And of course, I saw the one, Josh, yeah. Andy Walker did the game on Sky with Crocs, and we talked about it last night. How sore was that for you? Two up, and then you lost it. Yeah. So take, you know, taking the whole round view of the situation. I mean, Sean's teams are normally based on that, like, defensive solidarity and functionality, but we are missing giant ban fleet. And yeah, it is a really an excuse to say that, you know, one person's missing it affects the whole team. But I think in this case, it kind of does, because, like, we can see the three in the first game, and then four against Tottenham, and then just when you think, like Barry alluded to there, just when you think the game's up and you've actually played, well, for great to five minutes, you know, the the demons, I'm not defending your 18 year box, we've been off gusto. And the game management side of it as well, Sean will be absolutely gutted with that. Sure. Yeah. Like the hallmarks of the Sean team is difficult to break down. Like, Pickford kept 13, Premier League clean sheets last season. That isn't done by accident. That's done on the training ground. Like, we need to get back to that, because, like, we are blessed with quality. So we have to try and keep that foundation there. And I am in total belief that Sean can turn it round. I mean, yes, people are saying sat the manager, but they're just going to come in and they haven't got any financial muscle, or other transfer market open. So you just, you sort of start with the same players, aren't you? Josh, they're both desperate to ask you, are you an Everton Celtic fan, an Everton Rangers fan? Well, it says he's a blue nose. So that's a kind of a say that even if you're a Celtic fan, you can never say you're a blue nose. I'm very much an Everton Celtic man, just just for the sort of fact that I grew up watching him, right? Well, don't call yourself a blue nose there. That's your finished end, Josh. Josh, I was actually a thing for myself. He knows. Josh, listen, really good call. Thanks very much. We'll maybe speak to you and join the game of Sunday. Thanks for now, yes, Josh. Oh, wait, oh, wait, 17, 17, 700. Go radio football show. Listen anytime, whatever you get, your podcast. Pizza was at the gym this morning. Barry was playing golf, and in fact, Stephen is tuned in, and he was in the group behind you. So I'll find out how Stephen... Oh, what's he? Yeah, Stephen Doyle. And they always listen in, the Doyle's. And he was behind you, so just checking the score. He was trying to hate you, but boy, what happens to him? He was a couple of strangers. He was shooting four. Yeah, he's watched you off in Barry. Buddy, we might be shooting four not all. Yeah, don't know, boy. We haven't mentioned... No, man, you haven't mentioned the weekend, but I think we've got it in a minute. So that's the best I've ever gone over. It's gone over a half-glass weekend. Terrible memory. Exactly. Honestly, I don't know what happened last weekend. I know it's hard now, that's weekend. Jack Draper, in the semifinals in the US Open, it's phenomenal, isn't it? We hadn't really heard of him until this week, so fingers crossed for him. Some of the other headlines today after Scotland's crushing defeat last minute. In fact, the 97th minute, we know the story, and we lost 3-2, but we're talking more about the game against Portugal. We're in Aldo hitting 900 goals. It's phenomenal. Right, some of the other headlines today, well, it's not headline, but there's still a speculation about James Tavernier. The window's still open in Turkey, and is the captain going to go? He's given so much for so long as it's time for it to go, and apparently there's maybe six clubs interested. Paul isn't around flying the huge rain just fan. Paul, good evening. You're welcome. It's great to have you on. Is that what's on your mind about James Tavernier? Good evening. Ethan, Paul, anything, guys? Evening, Paul. Always good to hear you. Thank you. You know my thoughts on Tavernier. I've said that a number of times in your show, I think it's a kind of end of the road. But I suppose my question was to Barry and Peter in there, obviously, just taking their thoughts on it as well. But I feel like I'm watching Rangers. I felt about putting record to bonus, right? But it seems to be the same set up time and time again, and like I said, the definition of the madness is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. And I want the players to take all the time with the same way. I want to ask Barry, I'll put you on there, be the next Rangers player. Barry, two questions for you. One, using Tavernier as a captain, you were a captain of Rangers, right? I want to get your thoughts, what you've thought, what you've seen at Park Cade, and the difference between Carolyn McGregor and someone like James Tavernier. Secondly, you played under the lights here, legends like Walter Smith, and people like Art and Decardvicker, who got all the success at Rangers, and granted the different players, different times, yeah, the idea, the idea. But do you think that's your bet? Definitely make me set up to play against Celtic because the way we're doing it, we're putting Tavernier out there. Honestly, as a punter, I'm not a coach. I'm not going to be private at all like kind of stuff. But I can see in my mates, I go to watch games where we can see it. How can the coaching team who are qualified like Calick V and people like that, how about they've not seen that in my every playing the same way, same again, and same again. So what you're saying Paul is changing Taverniers and putting them maybe one up if you're going to still have them in the start of the living and putting a diesel in Sterling, because it made us obviously had a lot of success against James Tavernier over the last number of all fun games, is that what you're thinking of? I'm just thinking something different. I mean, it's not even the case. I mean, that's all mine, I think. But I just remember for Lando Rickson, Rickson was moved further up the field, and it worked for him. So, I don't know what you're saying, I don't know how it worked for Tavernier, but you've never tried it. Certainly something needs to change going forward against Celtic. They obviously tried pressing them high up the pitch for the first 10 minutes. They did work it kind of work, but listen for me, the game last 99 odd minutes. If you're going to do that, you've got to do it for the vast majority of the game. I understand during the game, and I'm sure Grant will agree with me here, your opposition is going to have an influence in the game at some stage. So, while they have that, you have got to be absolute rock solid and make sure you're really compact. You don't give any chances away. But when I was sitting at the game, and I've said it now a number of times I've spoke to my mates about it, I spoke on here about it, I spoke my column about it, I just felt when that this allowed goal went in, I just felt the heads went down, it was like they'd suffered. It's like the 3 or 4 down. And I just felt that was when I was really concerned, and then obviously 4 to 5 minutes later, what happens? Very similar, kind of move down the right hand side and between the full back and the centre half, cut across and made a coming in at the back post. I just felt at that time, and you still get 75 minutes left in the game, Paul. I just felt that that heads went down and they really suffered, really suffered, and it's a concern. As it's clearly a concern, and going into the next game, I'm not even thinking about the game in January, I'm just thinking, I'm more concerned about next week at Canada, and it's Sunday at 12 o'clock, Paul. I've been honest with you, but I do understand the frustration, I do understand something going forward, has to change. I played in teams when, we had strong teams, but on maybe missing 3 or 4 players through a suspension at injury, but was a real fight? If we did suffer a defeat, we went down really fighting and scraping. I just felt I didn't see that in Sunday, and you have to see that for a dangerous team. I was going to just say to Paul that as well, but a sympathy for Tarvin, he had no respect to that. He's no player that got long, the players that Barry played with. Sometimes you... The quality. The quality. Listen, Barry will tell you any player needs good players along with you. You need good players along with you, and I don't think Rangers are at that level. They've been a hell of a lot of changes. Last season we gave them benefit to do with the injuries they had, all these sort of things, because it's so many, the roofs and all that, who have all of them made a difference. If they were all fit, they'd have made a difference to the team. They're not on it, and Tarvin here, they'd be fair, he's turned on, put the shot on, weekend weekend. I know people criticising me, they criticising me, and listen, it doesn't make it easy. I was criticising a lot, and it wasn't easy going out to play under that criticism. Please blame it, it's hard. Oh yeah, of course Paul. Listen, I've never had a camera phone stuck in your face right now, but it's never easy. You want to go out there, you want to do your best, you're trying your damnedest, but to do that you need help. You need help with the players that's all along with you, and I just don't think Rangers have got that. I said during the week when I was only a Barry, I felt if Rangers went too nothing up, Celtic, but I still won the game. That's where they... And that sounds disrespectful, but it's a fact that this moment in time, I just don't see that. I played in a team that didn't beat Rangers that often. They always had a fight with them, and they scrapped with them, and they lost it, there was one now, there was a couple of big scores in both ways. But most of all, every game was a fight and a scrap, and you hit them. I don't see that in the Rangers team, and I feel for James Tavern, you in that respect, the centre backs have constantly changed. Whoever it's been, whatever season it's been, if it's subtle back in now, you've got proper, you've got ghost, and... Sort of the weaker without him. So, if James Tavern here does go in the next few days... But that's one of the... I know I say games I run and lost in the mid-life patch, but see, I say it will back five, and I'm including the goalkeeper there. You need that, 19. So, we need that to stay. So, if he goes, the window's closed... You've got... Well, the window's no closing in Turkey, and then... I mean, once it's closed... Yeah, but here. So, if he does go, and that's how he could go... I think he's suffering just now. And the Rangers be weaker without him, though, if he goes. Well, they've got... These are on Sterling who can play right back. They've got the boy that they brought in for Fajna to play and sent her back. And... Yes, they'll be weaker, Paul. Yes, they'll be weaker because he scores goals, it takes responsibility if he set plays, it creates chances, reaches crosses, but he's having a hard time because he's not a good defender. The one that gets up then see them another day there, it constantly does. He lets the ball up there and see them in going too wide, and then maybe they'll just run away from him as if he's not there. And that is a problem. Yeah, sure, he's been dynamite as you know, moving forward. Absolutely. Paul, final point news is next. Are you going? I just, just very critical, just to say, it was exactly the same way we were actually... We were actually many first-game, three-year-olds, as far as we all know. Got a hit, got a... I was thinking I'd take me to 6-1 game, when he got fucked off, we had to. But, you know what, later in these careers, we've seen them as a weakness, and then moved them further up the hill, and it made a difference. But you got your back three, Paul. She'll be the centre-half, she'll have gotten out, because I don't think you've got a lot of pace. So, if you play by an extra centre-back and play him as a wing-back, I think you'll see a better player as well. Yeah, I don't think he's going to change your system. I think it would take a... I agree, I think we would be, we'd be kind of without, actually, that's without a doubt, because we can't then go... Yeah. The typical thing with the tarpon is we'd pick up an injury test there, or something like that. But, last night, I just think it's more than that, but it's much more than Tarzan here. If Tarzan here goes away, it's not going to fix things. I want to have it come on. I think he's a bit... I'll be honest for you. The jury was out for me, and I always said that this was against Celtic, and, you know, whatever he's coming across as a fan, as hard as it seems to say, is a yes, man. That's the way it seems to be. He's just going along with it and saying, "What other boards says yes?" "What a smith would have never, never..." And I'm allowing this accepted up from the board. Never would have accepted that. And that breaks my heart to say, like, come on, just seems to be... Yeah, that's the way it is. The injuries, though, they're serving my fondle out there, Daniel, you're out again. It's never ending. And the jury's out in come on, and the jury's out in the board, and they've strongly been facing them. They're up, so they're letting Celtic throw at half an ears in their own Hollywood move, if you want to call it that. Great player, good assists, weak defender, but maybe follow up, he'll maybe better, but you know what? He isn't a strong team, and it really hurts me. It's going to be interesting. It's going to be interesting the next few days, because I believe as it's Sunday night and Monday night. Monday, I think, the window closes. Obviously, cut assing it today, everybody. There's six teams. There's three or four turkeys teams. A couple of Middle East teams, he's been linked now for well over a year. I've been interested to see what happens. I think a boy would be relieved by us. I know, I know, I think it's a lot better. You know what? I'm like, "I feel for that." I suffered. I get criticized. It's no nice, and you know what? You can take it, and I can understand the fans after Straighty, but what happened after the game? No, I don't like seeing that. I can accept people shouting at you, and having a go at you, but sometimes it's a bit close. I wasn't a bit close to any of that, so that was a shock. And I failed for them. Paul, we're going to have to go for the news. I'll ask you more about Philip Clomone, because you did say a bit Clomone there, but is he to blame for the fact that there's lack of finance in the club? You could say partly, because he didn't win the title, but he wasn't expected to, but you were in the box seat for a wee while, so maybe do that in the next hour. Paul, thanks for your call. Yes, Paul. This is the Good Radio Football Show. Listen live, weeknights from five, on go. Let's go! This is the Good Radio Football Show. Listen anytime, whatever you get, your podcasts. Call, oh wait, oh wait, 17, 17, 700. Hour two, with Peter Grant, Barry Ferguson, Paul Cooney, lots of calls coming in on the first hour. Josh was on from Widness and Englishman, who really loves Scottish football. And it's Everton, as his team as well as we heard. I think he thought he was a video lover. Go for a wee while, but a really good call from Josh. Hey, new stuff. You did ask. Yeah, he does. Sounds like coach, knows plenty about it. Yep, I thought he was good, and telly he says he was unable to sell. Take my drink. He called himself a blud, who was first natural. I was worrying about it, so he was going to get an old answer. And then Paul was on the Rangers fan, talking about James Tavern here, and you're right, guys, seeing the era of social media. I mean, it's just outrageous, isn't it? Peter Lobel got the week before St. Marin, not as bad as that, but they still got the kind of language that shouldn't happen. And then James Tavern, are they ready to... I don't know, granted, that I was fine with criticism, as long as it was constructive. But there was a couple of times it went well over the top, and you're only human. You're only human, Paul, and it does affect you. There's no getting away with it. I don't care if you're a strong character. I would see myself as a strong character. You see yourself as a strong character. But at some stage, it does get to you. Oh, listen, when it becomes personal, that's when I don't like it. But if it's really constructive, and like after the defeat, I could take it. Hey, it's no good enough, right? You know what, right? I know it's no good enough. Well, I need to do something about it. But just so many things that I've seen, it was tough for me. You know yourself, you've been a dangerous man. I'm even a salty man. When it's your own, it's given, it's really, really tough. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It's even harder, Paul. That's what I'm saying. It doesn't matter, really, really hard. I don't want people to realize how much it hurts you, you know? And it was really tough. I found it tough, even then, when there was no such thing as people saying about men or hells or whatever. But you just had to deal with it. But it wasn't a nice thing. You were nervous about it, because you never, ever wanted to let them down. You wanted to be the best every game you played. And you tried to give that commitment to it. Okay, you were going to give your bad days like everybody else. But when it was OTT, it was tough to, you say freight, start the night, get employment times, it was a tough spell. You had dark rooms, but very much the player. There's no easy getting in that car and then you think to yourself. Yeah, absolutely. That is sore. It is sore. And you can understand it. People are frustrated. It was maybe just after the game. They're just low, everybody's low. But when you take a bit of criticism, when it goes over the top, it's not enough. It's a hard combination on supporters. You don't mind. See, other supporters giving you criticism of it. You don't mind that. Saving a shadow and that hot sheet. And it really does. Unless you deserve criticism, it turns on. I understand that. You know. But it's the manner of it. Yeah, it's a few times away. It's time to accept it as part of the game, Paul. You have got to get criticized at times. Everybody gets criticized with don't like it. It's just when I think it goes over a certain line, I don't like it. It's the one that you think is wrong, isn't it? No. When you see these videos that get popped up, all that, that's the thing for me. They forget these boys. I've got kids as well. Do you want some good news? Yes. Yes, go on. Garden Read OBE, big range has found Barry. Along with Alfie Hewitt, have won gold in the men's doubles, tennis at the Paralympics. Oh, fantastic. It's fantastic news. In the last half of the defeat of the Japanese player, Tokito Oda and Takuya Miki. 6-2-6-1 at Roland Garrosh. Oh, brilliant. Brilliant. He's a great guy. He does the kill walk. He's an ambassador. Have you seen this show? Yeah, he was. Wasn't he? He came on. Brilliant guy. Fantastic. So well done, Gordon. We'll get him on the show when he gets back. So it's a golden slam for the two of them. They're the dominant force in the men's game. I'm absolutely delighted. I was looking out for it there. Isn't that brilliant? Brilliant. If you see, you've seen them play, obviously. Absolutely, yes. Let us see them. And the courage. That is phenomenal. It's phenomenal. Yeah. That's what I'm talking about. The courage I've seen. Yeah, you know what you've got to fight for. You know, and these guys do it constantly. And this is all the what they've put in. These are the moments they're waiting for. Just this one moment. And they've been doing it for a career. But this one moment is the thing they've been looking for. Fantastic. Well done. I know you want to congratulate them as well, buddy. I mean, it's a term of achievement. Met them, as I said, that Addison read. You come on, they're sure. And just having that at a chart. We are, what can I just mention? And what it has to go through. He's training museum, very fit. Yeah, what an achievement, one in gold. Great news. So let's hope Jack Draper does well playing. I mean, what an achievement for him. Young man. We didn't win the bout until a few days ago. I'm going to be watching. I can watch it. Yeah, I'm going to watch it. I'm going to watch France Italy as well. Yeah. Yeah. What are they on this? I don't know what it is. It's fresh up. It's fresh up right now. No, I don't know. Fresh up right now. Nice. Hang on. I'm suffering. I was talking something. Yannick's in there, of course. This is like me for seeing that. I know. I'm suffering. I don't know what he's drinking. I'm suffering. Yeah. Not a hell day of life. Not a lot. Not a lot. Yeah. You got the fresh shop to buy a fashion chap. Nothing else. Three, two last night. We lost. It could have been different. What do you think? And what changes will you make for Sunday? What's it going to do at the back after-- I don't think I'm paying any changes. What changes? Same again. Here's Stevie Clark. He's not throwing anybody under the bus. Everyone's disappointed. We lost a game that we shouldn't have lost. It's not about picking out individuals. We never do that. I've never done that. And I'm not going to start now. We win as a team. We lose as a team. We'll go away. We'll analyze the game and we'll speak in camp. And Barry, we didn't make many mistakes. But we did two of the goals there. I thought the three goals were mistakes. Take that aside, Paul. And I know, listen, goals are the biggest effect on a game. I just thought, our reaction to going to go down is really good. Obviously, getting that penalty just before half time sometimes kills you, Paul. It was a clumsy challenge by Rawson. But I thought they're setting half listening. And I've said, no. Listen, me as we are not accepting this. And I thought they come out right up against the Paulis team. I thought the N of J, the enthusiasm. And the quality, at times, was really good. And then they get it back to go to each story. To lose that goal. When I was sitting there watching out at my cup of tea, I was devastated. But listen, I'm sure Grant Hanley is an experienced player. He'll look back and think to yourself. Yeah, it was a big mistake. And initially, as I said, Pauli, that's where we should come down to the line. Just stand. If he stands tall, it's out for a corner. And just make sure he defend that. And then, full time whistle, you take a point. He was always so quick. He's maybe lost. Just, I'm not going to say a yard. But Peter, you'll know him well, Grant Hanley. Was that not part of his game? He was faster than... No, well, listen. I thought Scott McKenna was excellent last night. Yep. And Scott's deceiving. You think Scott, a big slouch beacon run. You know, Gagey's deceptive slaughter. No, exactly. No, no, he's not. No, but he's very quick. You know, for the ground, very powerful runner. I thought he'd done really well last night. Barry spoke about it earlier. Tony and Grant will be looking at it today, thinking, you're told as a kid, don't go a ground in the box. It's a rule you're always told. If you don't hang your foot in there, and especially when you're playing an international football or European games, because they're... They need the foreigners. I've played them in Barry's play a lot more foreigners. And I did. They were always taught as kids. Soon as they're in the box, the fenders can't touch you. And if they do touch you, go down. You know? So that's why you have to stay on your feet. And for the life of me and Grant, won't even know he's self-wined with putting that tag on, because Barry spoke about the fact that he's in the right area. And if Angus Gunn would have been beat for there, he'd been questioned on Angus Gunn, because he'd have been a good angle. He'd have to strike across him. He couldn't get across to the back post. So everything was in Grant's favor. And you're just... You're sitting there with a slow motion movie. You're thinking, "Don't do it." You know what I'm saying? Yeah, exactly. They're saying, "No, no." And then you just look at the referee in the referee. No, he was pointing right away. And it was his accent with Tony. I'm just thinking, because he'd done really well up to that period. He defended his area well. His distance in between his centre back was really good. And it was the first time the ball was upside, and side him. And he went for it, thinking, "Whoa, I can't let him get a shot across the goal. That's when you can't gamble. That's when you can't. That's when you've got to stay in your feet." O8, O8, 17, 700, Coles coming in the second hour for Barry Ferguson and Peter Grant. More in Scotland. We've got some Celtic news coming up as well. They're playing in Ireland next month. Tell you in a moment or two. Before that, though, let's hear Stevie Clark speak about the substitutes. And he brought them on in the second half. I think the bright energy to the game, at a time when the game was opened up. I think all the substitutions that went on to the pitch, all the substitutes went on. Made a good impact in the game. Obviously, it helps when you just make a substitution. You score immediately. That helps everybody. Guess it's back to a score line, which should have been the worst score line that we faced at the end of the game. Should have been at worst two, too. But, like I said, you get punished for mistakes at this level. 21 seconds into the second half. And I deal with that. I deal with that. And it wasn't even a kickoff. No. And really good, really good finish. I just thought, wait, that's the way we had to start. There was no doubt about it. And we grew into the game pool. And we get back to two each. And it was thoroughly deserved. They had a few opportunities. When the game opened up, they last maybe five or ten minutes. And I just thought we're bringing Billy off and putting John back. It's no natural position. And we can play there, John, but it's no natural position. I just thought, wait, it'd be 82. It was 83 minutes. Billy, girl, more come off. He could have played another 10, 15 minutes easily. Because he's had game time at Brighton. And it's really early in the season as we all know. Yeah. And you could see the B-Man was, I think it was about disappointing to be getting brought up. And also the fact, Barry. He's running again. How many goals has he scored? Yeah. He's your top goal scorer. Yeah. You need a goal. If you're going to be, if difference you're going defensive, then you think, okay, maybe think definitely. But if he's putting forward players on, guys, they try and get a goal. Lewis Morgan's never scored the field in the national goal. Gold's never scored. Young Gold's never scored. So you're saying to yourself, right? John McGinn has. Yeah. So keep them on. Because if you're putting all the followers that I spoke about earlier, you need to serve us on. Yeah, for sure. And that was the only thing, I would have questioned on that particular one. But, as you see, you've got to go again now. And the interesting thing for me, isn't that I know we're going name, teams and whatever. Well, so just imagine, came to you only with fit, for instance. And you've been using him, haven't you? I'll be, I'll be your step back. You're back to that conundrum. Yeah. Paul, you know what I mean? Right. We ended up listening to him. So I'm looking at it and I'm saying, tomorrow night, does it change the system? Because one, you need that energy. The only thing you can do then is probably leave a can in my clean out and keep those other guys in my legs. Because you can still play the same way, but the only thing you would have to do is be our back three instead of our back five. And that's what I've done quite a lot. And they've got really good players. So I think that middle of the pitch is going to be important. Because for Nandes, it doesn't play in an area. Silver, don't play in areas. Leo is a big, quick life winger. And you've got Ronaldo, obviously. Ronaldo, you know what he's capable of. You see the goalie scores last night with the cross coming in the box. So it's been interesting to see what the shape with the personnel he's got available, what he's going to do going over there. Barry, would you make any changes then for Sunday? Yeah, I would personally, but I don't think, I think the only change that he'll make will be up top. And who will it be? I don't know. It'll be, obviously, the top shine when it's going to be. And it's going to cause you both to let it be. It's not played. I think he'll keep the same start at 11, personally. If there is going to be one change, I think he'll only change the number nine. It's not a bit interesting. Because I think what Diggs gave him was that ball out. And I think you have to have that. And it doesn't matter where it's big strong or whatever. But then if you didn't play Diggs, I would make Tom and any of that area and play off of him and let the other midfielders support that. If he goes to a back three and make it a back, you know, a back five, you still want that energy. We spoke about it prior to the Germany game. We spoke about it prior to Alaska. Last evening's game about having that energy to run forward. So you've got to go forward. You've got to put them under pressure. Listen, top European players don't really like defending the first balls up and crosses in and playing under that. They can play under pressure with the ball at the feet. You know, but when you're putting crosses in, body will tell you defenders don't like it anyway. They don't like people running off them. They want everything in game and passing the ball and moving the ball. But if you've got runners by you, you have to track. And I'd rather put you over running back the way. They're now just playing in front of them, you know, to get the ball nicked off us. Because then we'll get it up because of the quality of health. - Do you think you'll change formation? - I've got a funny feeling, yes. I've got a funny feeling, yes. - Back to three. - Yes, but I only think I'm thinking that because I don't know where Grant Hanley's energy is at this moment in time. You know, well, they put an extra body in the portcase or whatever. But still wouldn't play the wing bikes higher. They'd still give us that extra body's further up the pitch. It'd be one of the midfielders saying, "I can't even clean drops out." But keep the other boys because they're all runners and keep Billy as that one. But then your two feel bikes, if it's Ross and saying, "Robotson, higher up than you did play against Germany." But then go forward as I say, or for some near like a McTormany of Nikes is not playing. - Would you think on that, Barry? - I'd think it, I'd just play it. - Grant, it's possible he could change the guy's know that system. That's what they've been playing under Steve Klatt since he's committed a job. Listen, we're just needing to wait and see, I just think it will be the same. I love him, that's what I'm going to go for. That started the game against Poland. - Three, two at the end. He was the manager. - Obviously disappointing to lose a game like that, a game that we shouldn't lose, we shouldn't lose. But if you make errors at this level, you get punished. And we got punished severely for the errors that we made in the game. Lots of good things, but still a defeat. - Big win last night for Northern Ireland. Two nil against Luxembourg, and I know it was Luxembourg, but it was a good win for them. But in our section, Portugal beating Croatia 2-1 last night. So we could create a... - That was a good game, Paul. - Yeah, I watched that, I watched that, Phil after it. And I thought it was a really good game. You've got more of it, it's not playing, geez. - How is he? How are you, is he? - He's just tough. - He's just tough. - They're all right, anyway, Paul, you know. But they've always had the game Croatia, you know. Portugal, you know, they've got top, top quality players. And listen, people complain a bit, they don't know if I'm nine days, what a player he is. You know, he's a top quality player. I know he's a morning face and whatever. We've all been there, me and Barry, we're probably more than biggest mourners ever, you know. Or in the pitch, but I think he's just a top, top quality. And then you add silver and that, you know what I mean? Leo, you know, AC Milan. You know, and you're just thinking, just full of talent, you know what I mean? But that Bernardo silver. It was funny because he'd done an interview the other week with the big film, he was talking about the gym. He said, "No, the gym's only for people that can't play with the ball at the feet." And he was talking about do you guys? - Oh, yeah. - You know, and he doesn't even let a footballer but what a player he is. - Yeah, buddy. - Yeah, yeah. Ridiculous football player. Ridiculous, and you know what, I hope it's not in the case, but I fear it could be a long night against Portugal. - You think so? - Yeah, you look at the team, they're packed with quality. Packed with guys who are playing at the highest level. Yeah, I just hope it's, they have an off-night Portugal. - I think that's one of the things I'm saying to the changer system, to fill their gaps between your full backs, you know, because you have to come and play them at times. But if they get their balls between the side of your centre backs and the full back, then I think that could be a problem for us. So I think that extra centre back there. - Yeah, I just worry as you mentioned, if it goes to a... - It becomes a five. - A five, I mean, that's my concern. - Yeah, you're defending the 18-yard line and it's just waves the attack. - Yeah. - And at some stage they're going to get through with a quality of go. - Absolutely. - And then the forward areas. - Celtic fans, you've got a game in Sligo on Wednesday, October the 9th that came out today. So an early season, like a pre-season fan. - I haven't played for the last one. - It is, yeah. So they won't have, obviously, some of the players won't be there, Greg Taylor, James Forrest, they won't be there. - I don't want to be away. - Dyson Mida, but still a strong squad, you know, I would imagine. - Yeah, we don't have ones, but we played Ben, Fica, and Taronto, of all places, we were not, and it was Angel Di Maria, no, they were playing. And only the first team player we had was Andy Henkel. Everybody else was away in our national. - And played really well, we get beat 2-1. And that was the first time I'd bumped into Morris Johnson since he'd seen it. - Is that right, again? - Just all the years prior to that. - Come back to that shortly. Yes, Sligo, who played mother will remember, they beat them two years ago as we remember. And so they're playing their 9th of October, and they're saying that's the best place of Brother Wofford, the founder of Celtic. And also they mentioned the late great Sean Fallon, who was the assistant manager. - Fantastic man. - Wonderful man, he was. But also Willamie Stabers here, as manager. - Yeah, he was, that's right, well, mate, Conroy. Member, mate, Ben's up. - I did, did, mate. - Mate was manager there as well, and he did on well, going to be back in Europe and whatever. - The next day is Willy, and Paul, like the Ferguson's, in a way as well. - Raymond. - Raymond, exactly. - You must have played against Raymond. - Oh, he was a, a bit older, maybe two or three years. - Yeah, he was the baby, wasn't he, he was the youngest. - You remember he was the youngest, yes, he was your three. - Yeah. - Willy and Paul, Paul was the middle one. - Yep. - Fierce kill, shall we? - That's right, yeah. Close to light call. - Yeah. - It had to be a good player, but he didn't know. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're going to be a good player for that, Nick and it was... - Great family. - You still using all my tags in an armoured car? - Beautiful player. - Yeah, of course. - Oh, it's stunning. - Yeah, absolutely. So, have you been up to the... - Have you ever seen a race in a senior song? - No, no, no, no. The great restaurant there, of course. It's not the Shanghai, do you house that's the first one? Anyway, the place up, it's a brilliant place. Jimmy and Wanto have got a great place there. - Yeah, your other ones as well. - There's not a lot, yeah. - Beautiful ones. - Yeah, sure. Put them onto the advertising department for them. Brilliant week here, so record-breaking week. So, well done to Michelle and the team here. Excellent. - Oh, there they go. - Can I just come again? - Was coming in, they've all done well. Yeah. Oh, wait, wait. - Keep you in a job. - So, that's him. - Ladies, Rangy, that's him. - I know. - 700, Peter Grant is here. You don't have to stay Peter till 7. Back Barry and I can continue and we're back after this. - This is the Go Radio Football Show. Listen anytime, whatever you get, your podcasts. - Let's go. Let's go home. - Yep, the summer's still here. It's hanging on by a thread. It's going to be great today. Well, it has been today, hasn't it? Tomorrow as well. Maybe Sunday, not too bad. Maybe a bit closey. So, Grader was in good form this morning with Crofti at breakfast, because he's doing this new programme with Judith Moston, the weather woman. So, he's a bit of a weather expert now. But, hey, listen, if he keeps bringing this weather, bring it up. - Well, worth it. It's nice to see that sun. That's a fossil. - We've seen it, Paul. - It's brilliant. - There's not bad weather person before the border. - Which one? - Sean Bat. - I know. - Yeah. - Nice guy. - That's fun. - Yeah. - Nice guy. Had a couple of drinks from. - Yeah. - And, um, Gris. - Who was buying? - Me. - Yeah. - Yeah. - No. - No, I didn't feel it was on Chris. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Not really a bit nice guy. - Nice group. Eric family. Absolutely brilliant. Does the kill walk very often as well? - Well, yeah. - We're in Edinburgh. We're on Sunday. 8,610 walkers at the moment. - Brilliant. - Biggest ever. - Brilliant. - So Edinburgh, last year, 6,900. So it's up to 8,600. For 777 charities. - Wow. - Lucky number. - That's fantastic. - It's going to be great. So Tom Hunter will be there leading it out. And, yeah, they'll all be there on a clock. The team there, top team. Royal Bank has gone at everyone, but 8,600. Real looking forward to it. Including Sean Tracy will be there. And I'm mentioning Sean, because Sean's on the business show with Lord Willy Hokey and Sir Tom Hunter. On Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. So he worked at Power League. He was a CEO, remember Power League? All the five of sites. So he managed that business and did really well with it. And he's also now chair of Hyperliminal, which is a games company in Dundee. Dundee is the kind of hotbed of the games company. Sean's a brilliant guy. So he's one of the trustees. So that's Sunday morning, 11 to 12. - Yeah, and then brand new Sparklin studio. - Yeah, and Gita, it's looking good. A lot happening here. - I'm comfy, so have you seen this? - Delta's aren't they? You should get them in here, Sean. - No, no, no, no, no. - I understand. - Stand and grow at all. - Oh, you're standing. - Oh, very good. Thank you. - A lot of calls and messages. - You're done growing the person. - Oh, no, he's there. Yeah. Who was it said that? - I am it, Andy Walker's family saying, "Oh, you're a lot nicer to Peter Grant than you are to Andy." I said, "Well, everyone is." No, Andy was in top form last night. - It makes a change then? - Yeah, I know what. - Very good. - Yeah. No, and ours has been away this week, I think, at the close of the transfer window. Few people are on that chat earlier on. Yeah, is James Tavernier on his way to Turkey, where the window is still open for another couple of days? We'll find out in the next few days, because I mean, he's been at Rangers at one of the most difficult periods of the history. - Yep, definitely, but Paul Savie does go. If you think nine years ago, Rangers bought them for £300,000. And listen, I know when you wear that handband, your judge's done winning trophies. I know that, but if you look at, if you strip it back and you look £300,000, you look at the games that you've churned out, you look at the assists and the goals, and I know the vast majority of them are from the penalty spot, but you've still got to step up. I've never had penalties. I've missed plenty of penalties. I'm sure Granny has as well. But overall, if he does go, he's been a good sign in for Rangers. - Yeah, for sure. - I think you can't argue with that in any respect. You know, I've never figured him as a defender. I've always thought, and that's his job, and I always was critical of him for that, because that is his number one job. But going the other way, you need to help Paul. And I've constantly said that when you're a player, and a team, and in any scene, all he's making is away in the summer, and I think he's thanked himself as well. It's another rebuild, and it just seems to have been constantly up for Rangers for many years now. Another rebuild. Celtic had been getting stronger and stronger, one in league after league. And let's not be kidded. That kills you, stone dead as well. It's okay if Aberdeen or something, maybe come in where league are. Some day I was jumping in, winning a league dominated. But when it's Rangers in Celtic, and it's Celtic, it gets constantly winning. That puts massive pressure on you. And I just don't think he's either had the players with him either. There's been changes as a manager. And that's not helped him. I mean, you're leading that. I don't care what leader you are. You can take that and ban off him, but that make any difference? Absolutely not. You know, it wouldn't make any difference in the shape of the form, the way the boys played. As I say, I don't think he's the greatest defender. But when you come to a personal level, staying in there as long, you do need to help with top quality players, and he's not had that. So we've got the Europa League and the Champions League squads for Rangers and for Celtic. On Rangers, Barry, No, Danilo. Yep. So what's this do the thing? There's a KO blow with the Brazilian player. Yeah, and obviously you've just mentioned, he's not in the Euro squad for the games. That tells me he's going about longer than a month, Paul. It is a month. I don't know exactly what the injury is. It might be a reoccurrence of the knee injury that you suffered, because it was a serious knee injury. So that is disappointing, because a lot of the fans were quite excited, because it's been a bit stopped. That is Ranger's career when he's commanding. He was looking really good before he actually got that injury. So he has a blow, because they're very light up top. Very light for sure. There's a thing that he was spotted in a knee brace at a glass. He didn't pitch us. Yeah, at the airport, so he was there. Let's hope he's not, because they've got desert. And you know, there's not much more up front. Is there the Moroccan? Oh, yeah, the new, it's perfect. But he's only young. I think if you're going to challenge and you want to be successful, I think you've got to have a very least 3 cent of forwards at the very least. So very light up top, Rangers. I'm sitting in my knee, of course. Yeah. You can manage that. We've just not seen much of them whatsoever. No, he came on and he showed the wee bit. He came on in the left-hand side, Paul. I don't know. If his position is through the middle, or it's in the left-hand side. But listen, he came on. I mean, he looked at me, he was about about him. Looked well, but I've not seen enough info, I've been honest with you. But very light going into these, this next crucial part of the season, because as I said, it starts a week and Sunday. I'll put down a dice and touch wood. Event happens to desert, whether that's maybe a small injury, whether you've got to send an off. Who do you play through the middle? And that's a problem that that's exactly what I've seen. How can you be critical of James Tarvin, when we're talking about players, a range of support and ex-captain, everything's sitting there? And you're guessing who your team's going to be, you're guessing who your players are. You can range the Celtic team off. And that's what we're seeing a bit different. It's a lot of effort for a few years. And you get the rewards for that, especially for good players. And that's what Celtic have. And I think Rangers have just made too many signings. They don't look at Fede 1, to be a Rangers player. And I don't mean that disrespectful. But maybe that's where they're shot by this moment in time. That's, unfortunately, that's football. But other guys have suffered have been there for a long time. And it's easy to be critical of them, because they've been there too long. And that's what we're seeing. We've got to look at the full picture. And you spoke at Philip Clemente earlier on, I'll go back to the C3 game. He's in the views for you then. I've been really poor. I can understand the boy earlier. I say, I can't remember who was at Paul. He was talking about saying a bit Clemente. He was right in the respect of that. I think the things he's seen now are not the things that he thinks. And I don't mean he said talking for anybody. Well, when he came in at first, Paul, I thought his interviews were brilliant. I thought he was brilliant in the way he analyzed the game. He talked to his players. He talked to his opposition. I thought he was excellent at really doing that. And it was really good. Because I like Van Brancost as you know. But I thought Clemente, great. He started to speak sounds blah, blah, blah. Then that's the C3 game. Ever since then, I believe he's in it. He's been buying average to say the least. Some of the stuff he can do. He said he's 6'9" against Rose County. It was best result in six years or something like that. I mean, come on. No matter what you're thinking, all you're saying in that time is, listen, it's a defeat against it. It's really hot and it's really sore. And then you got off. Rangers fans are no want to hear a bit of the week before. Bear in mind, as I said a little night there, they've already beat Dortmund and all that. And that period of time. But you don't get wrapped up. You've just got to say the fans are no happy. And you're head. You know the fans are no going to be happy. But we've came here. We've lost a massive disappointment. We have to get back in. We have to regroup and make sure this doesn't happen again. Beat it then. Did you find that when you were a football, when you were managing, it was hard on the whistle. 15 minutes later to face the media and to get it right. Yeah, but don't make it because you spoke. I would never recommend saying that it was a best result in six years against Ross County. Right. Yeah. Come on, cheer. I don't. Yeah. But has the experience, I think, listen, has the experience been brilliant? I mean, you look at it in the CVA. It's excellent. You know, he's been involved in big games. Retitles. So that worries me when he starts talking like that. Because yes, I know you're trying to keep people lifted. It was the same I said a big game soon as I thought. Hasn't a few of us awful? You know, as well. And I'm just thinking, are they trying to keep everybody up? Don't. You can never get support. Can't throw the fans. Yeah, sure. You can never get support us. Never never in the million years, Paul. People are intelligent. They've watched the game. Everybody's talking about it now. You can't do that. So get back to doing that, and I think you'll have a bigger chance because the fans will accept the truth. But don't be saying things that, if he's believing what he's saying, I'm really surprised and really disappointing. Barry, I guess you mentioned Dundee United. And if I asked you about the next games, I know you'll say, concentrating on the dice, go there and win, 12 o'clock. They're half the Paul, because there's been a hell of a lot of criticism. A lot. Rightly some of them. Yeah. You're right. Some of it is correct. And some of it I think has been a bit overboard. But anyway, forget about that. They need to go to town the dice and get the three points, Paul. Because they can't drop any more points. It's impossible to even think that. Do you think they will win? But town the dice. The half they win. The half they win. That's the attitude that's got to be there. They have to go up the town of the dice at 12 o'clock. And I tell you what, they've got something about them and now Dundee United. They've started the season really well. And good result of the weekend against town of the dice. They'll be right up for it. They'll be full. They'll stay there. The pressure will burn rangers. But when you play rangers, you've got to be able to handle that. And it's not about how you play. Believe me now, it's this glass thing in my mind. It's a score line. I could go up. You could go up there. And you could have an absolute nightmare. But all you need to do is make sure you win that game of football. The Celtic squad came out. I don't think there was anything surprising. The only one was Thiago home. I don't even know if that surprising Peter is. He's not in the squad. Technically, very good, Paul. It just seems to have been flattening out. But technically, he moves the ball well. He's got a really good touch in the ball. But I look at the squad now in the middle of the pitch. And I don't see him getting in before any of the other boys. And it's not because he's a bad player. And that's what I keep going back to that. It's not because he's a bad player. The other players are ahead of him. You know, they're better in the middle of this moment in time. And I can understand that. I mean, you're obviously looking at young Tully. Come on in a couple of games and I see him through preseason. I don't think he's in the squad. Somebody like that, you don't like to be in that group as well. Because they're probably under it. But I suppose you're only allowed so many players. That's homegrown ones as well. Who may be still well out if you've not filled in their gaps. They can still be part of it. And that's why they don't name them. So they can join the group. They're definitely looking stronger, Barry. This season, they were last season. They've lost Matt O'Reilly. We know that. But what do you feel, do you agree? Yeah, I think they're playing better than they did last year. They're playing a bit more pace about them as well. They're moving the ball a lot quicker. I thought watching Salty last year, I don't know if Grant agrees. I thought it was pedestrian at times. It was three and four touches. But now it's one to first time pass. So they take a touching pass and move. I just like they're in a changing room about the pitch. There's a lot of movement and that kind of baffles teams at times when they do that. But clearly listening, they're weren't under a top coach. He is. That's no kind of cell phone. But they're playing. You can tell they're playing the confidence ball. There's no doubt about it. Look, they're a real good preseason. Grant, you watched a lot of the games. I've never seen them unless they're in the highlights. But what I've seen the Celtics so far, yep, they are looking really strong. I agree with Barry and the respect of that. That's the biggest thing I've noticed. Centerbacks pass forward, quick instead of each other. I thought they'd done that a lot especially. Well, most of the season last year, in fact. And I thought they started passing a ball into midfield. Or aren't you Kyogo going for the pass? Because you've got to be wrong. You lose it, Paul, trying to do that. I think the wingers have went both ways. We spoke about the other night there. They've got crosses in the box. They've got bodies in the box. They're not passing the ball once they get to the final third and passing it all the way back to Callum. Because Callum wants about burying the respect. Always wants the ball. But if you're a winger and you've got onto the final third and it's not an opportunity cross, don't pass all the way back to Barry. Or Callum as it is at Be Celtic. Now, put it in the box. Because in the week, Kyogo will come alive. Adamida, whoever your center forwards are wanting in that box. And Celtic are getting bodies in the box. Made it in the back post. You've got boys dropping midfielders, dropping at the edge of the box. All these things. So it has been a lot more positive that way. Getting passes forward and runs forward and crosses in the box. Huge game for Celtic. A week on Wednesday, Peter. It's getting closer. Champions League. The music will be on. And Sloven Brittas-Lava. So that's a good opening game if you were choosing it. Is that fair? Yeah, but I'm always wary. Because we don't know the players. And as we spoke about it the other evening, there's always got a player who can produce something. And you can be playing really well in the game and it takes there to keep it to be excellent. Not that much. And then they score a worldy. Can be a fair set player and anything like that. And then all of a sudden, you're on the backfruit. Because everybody would put the kettle on. You would win that particular game. So you play these teams and maybe that's the beauty of this draw. Because you're only playing each other once. It's not as if you're saving yourself for the next leg or whatever. You know what I mean? In that respect, it's a one off. It's going to be very different. And you're playing in a game sometimes come the end of it, Paul. Remember, the game you're playing, and maybe a game in another group is going to affect you anyway because of the points to get into that 24 is it? You know, so all games are something to play for. Barry, for Celtic though, it looks like a good start. Yeah, I mean, you look at the teams. And I think Salty will be favourite. It's going to be the team's Brad Slava, young boys. Who was in the one Zagreb? I think you've got to be looking at beating him. Look, the champions link for these in because you're a good team. Yeah. And they all have good players. I mean, I come up against teams like, one, it springs to the mind's Maribo. Didn't know much about them, obviously. Watch a lot of video. When you actually come up close, you're thinking, technically, they were really good. Some great, good players. So, there'll be easy games, but they're winnable games. But anyway, they're the real competition, isn't it? How's it going to say they're up? Club of Bruce will fill it, come on, come over to see his old team. Club of Bruce, of course. Yeah, that's another one. Yep. Coming to town. They said the big player that came, angles he raved about him before he came. Yeah. Well, obviously, when you use a manger, he'd bruise, I think, at the time, he was raving about him how good the player he was. That was impressive. How many come on another day there as well, Paul? And I think Barry's right. I think, still to give the guy that middle area, sort of boxed in. You know, there's good players in there, and they've got all players that can, obviously, improve each other. And that's always an important thing to football say. Barry, 26th September, not far away now. Malmo against Rangers. So, yep, yep. You were saying that it's quite a tournament they're in. We know that... Good draw, like, when it come up, obviously, the one that springs to mind, is you're not even taught them. Yeah. And you're bringing taught them back up to Glasgow. Leon at home, Olympia, of course, away. Malmo, but, yeah. When you start the competition, you're what you're trying to go off to, "I want to start." And when I'm looking at Malmo, look, I wouldn't say that a team that would concern me. Again, they will have some really good players, but you've got to be looking to try and get off to at least a decent start. When away from home in Europe, I always say it, Paul, I'd always come take a draw, take a point. You're more concerned about Rangers than actual Malmo. Because I am. I'd be more concerned about Rangers than I am about Malmo. Don't forget who's strong there or whatever. I'm looking at the Rangers team. I'm looking at the squad that I've announced, and I'm thinking Barry Spoke on it. Dessers, who play centerfolded. Dessers is not available, and I look at that Rangers squad now, and I know that a lot of injuries last year. I'm talking about if you take the names, without injuries in it, you know, they said, "Oh, that's stronger." And I look at the Rangers squad, and I really fear for them in the European competition. Yeah, I'd been listening at games a few weeks away. Depending on injuries, as I said, I just look at that forward position, and it's really, really light for me. And as I said, I think you always need three strikers, at least I'm always by going to teams. I always played, but I had four strikers vying for that one position. And if Dessers suffers an injury, and hopefully touch good, he doesn't, or a suspension, or whatever, and I only should, you just don't know, you're getting into your games very light up top. If you're choosing your games, you're going to go to Old Trafford. Yeah, I know it's a little bit early. Yep, hopefully, but yeah. I'll be at all the home games. And you'll choose some of the away games as well. Peter, you'll be covering the games. Yeah, be a big one. Yeah, nice, don't worry about that. Oh, yeah, yeah. That's nice and sunny. Yeah, I'll tell you. Yeah, come on. Let's go! Going into the weekend, Paul Cooney, Peter Grant, and Barry Ferguson. We were looking at last night, Scotland, I kept his crew on, wasn't it? The 97th minute, giving away a penalty, and the 95th, they slaughtered it away. And no chance for the goalkeeper. Did he have a chance? Maybe? What did you think at that point? I mean, a penalty is a lotier. He went the right way. I think what he gets is much, I mean, you see it. You think, "Oh, could they have kept it out?" You know? And I'm not a goalkeeper, so I couldn't see it. People always talk a bit strong, rest or whatever. But I think when he gets so much on it, I think Angus may be a bit disappointed. Yeah. I'm not a goalkeeper, so I couldn't be critical, because I don't know the moments of what you're supposed to do. But we're having so much hand-to-ball. I thought it could have stayed out. Because you're that I know second. You thought, "Oh, he saved it." Absolutely. Yeah, I think he was disappointed. His gastri... And it went underneath him. Um, so yeah, I think if you ask him privately, I think he'll be disappointed that he didn't save it. What about the first goal by it? I mean, it's a wonder strike. Do you know what? I've watched it at a number of times. The guys have to flush. I mean, it's a great hat. It's that dippy way, and the grass is greasy as well. There's a bit of water on it. And I've heard a few people say, "Could they have saved it?" I'm not too sure. I just put it down to a great strike. And it's enough to put inside of the poster as well. You know, so it tells you how well the boy struck it. You know, his body says it dips, and then the pace of the ball takes up again, because of the surface. You know, there's no doubt of that. And yeah, again, it's very difficult for us, because we never played in goals with your position, as do you come out of yard, as they're further away. But the thing I was going to ask about it, the goal... It's even the Kenny Maclean sort of gives a bad pass to Billy in the middle of the pitch. You spoke about it last week, about corner baron running all over the place. That was my only concern about that, because that's two central midfields. He leaves in a wide open middle of pitch. Leaving that pitch wide open. There are two central midfield players who are over in the right back near enough area. Why? And that's... And put this above way, straight in that middle there. Yeah. When we played, we had two even rangers, and even at Scotland. One of the two had to always be central. Yeah, anchor. Yeah. Have you seen another one go? Your first job was not anchored in there. And they're actually passing each other in that area of the pitch. You know? Well, I can see Kenny Maclean the reason why he's trying to pass it, but he's just done that hit it. And listen, you make a mistake like that. They break. They get a bit of space centrally, and the boy hits a unbelievable strike to be fairing. Willie's been on the social scene. Look, I'm not blaming him, but Scott McTombin. He should have done better at the handball. Yeah, he should have gone for it. We talked about it earlier on. Willie's saying, why didn't he just get a clean header? I don't know, because if the defenders in front, sometimes it is a hardball, you know? And I'm not sure where the lights, I don't know where the lights, sometimes the lights can affect you. But the way the balls come dipping in, and you're thinking to yourself, go on, because it's food and drink for him. You see him doing it constantly. So I just think his eyes maintain off with the defender, and all of a sudden, he's found himself. And he's got a job. You've got to put his arms up. But I was so surprised, 100%. I believe it would really disappointed it. He's not getting a full contact, he's head. That was hard, wasn't it, buddy, when it was chalked off? Because we thought, I mean, as it happened, we did come back to 2-2. But at that point, you thought, no. It's going to be a tough moment. Yeah, it deserved to be chalked off. It was handball, Paul. I think if you ask Scott McTomb and his self, he'll be disappointed. He'll never get the head on it. So, yeah, and he's a danger. He was like, he wasn't taking a break at that. I was like, yeah, he has a danger inside that box. Because he's a, I mean, I don't know, I've never stood back. 6 foot, 3-4. He's got a big unit, and he's aggressive. I bet he jumps it. You know what I mean? I was surprised. Because he has aggressive inside the box. I was surprised without one with a handball, but it was definitely deserved to be chalked off. In the porn penalty, just two minutes before halftime, Tony Rawson just ill-judged. Clumsy, yeah. I don't think he's aware of this, he's great as well. He worked around about him. And he knew right away as well. You could see it with a picture behind the goal. You see him just shaking. He said he knows he's made a mistake. And I thought he had a good first, very good first. Yeah, yeah. Can sit on the criticism, and I felt unfair. And I'm not saying that as a Celtic supporter, and he's a Celtic kid. I thought it was unfair criticism to go. I said that. But I thought it was good. I thought it was unfair criticism. Because nobody, you could play. Apparently, he could have played up front for us the way we were playing. We spoke about that earlier. And that's why I felt it was difficult for these guys. And Grant Hanley doesn't help him a lot, even last night. Because when he's not, Grant's not great at passing the ball forward, I don't think. So he looks either Tetoni when he's under pressure, well, boy, come to close him down. Or he passes back to the goalkeeper too much. That's my thing with me. And that's why I think Portis's strength is it will go for the pass. Grant more back the way or square. And I think he puts a full back under pressure. Because when the ball comes back to it, if he gives it to 20-year-olds and he gets closed down, he plays it back to Grant. Grant doesn't go forward. He turns and plays it to hang his gun. So then there's become a hump up the pitch under with no control. And I think that's something I would look at. I definitely think Portis is a better user of the ball when he plays it. OK, well, we see changes. Just looking at the, well, we know Sir Tunil, they had two attempts in goal, two goals at halftime. So then Billy Gilmer, 21 seconds into the second half, scores the goal, gets his right back into it. Scott McTomb in he's 76 minutes. It was good layoff, wasn't it, by Tony Rawson? Gold dork was involved in it as well. Yeah, again, it was the way for Dork's pass. That made the goal. I made it easier for Anthony Rawson to just cut it back. It's a good cut back because I thought when he got into that position, he was just going to Alaska. But he's not, he's picked out. Yeah. Scott McTomb in it and he's made that run in a great finish. And in that stage, I think, yeah. Probably Lyndon H. Grant's got his score. Side netting. He's got his score. I thought so too. People, the right position. I was hearing that, I heard he was in his hip. He was no one. I'm tired, he had no mechanism. He was right. He was maybe, but I think he's got such a good contact. I thought he said back in it. But even at that, you've got to go across the goal. When I'm obviously then shutting down the strike, as you always got to shoot across the goal, I think big Lyndon will be disappointed. He didn't make the keep and make a save. So, he's got a big chance. Yeah, he's got to hit the target there. But two, two. I just thought we got some really good, good positions in the wide area. It was just the final cross. Was this a point? Good to watch for much of the game. And then we've talked about it earlier on the last few moments. Split second decision by Grant Handley. It was the wrong one. And it was a penalty. No question. The only way to ground Paul is to rule a thumb is your defender. It's very, very difficult. And you're told, as I said earlier on, as you said, the kid, that's the big things. And it's such a shame because they've got their energy and the fans had fought with them all the way. And that's not what the fans were very good. We never seen the back criticism at 2-0. I'm thinking, no, not as much as I was expecting. And if you did, because they showed an energy, they tried to play like Scotland should. Yeah. You know, they mixed it up. They went and go forward, play off, play earth's dreams. And that's what I think gave the fans a little bit more energy. Just before we get your predictions, what are you thinking? Ireland against England. Huge game this weekend. Lee Carlsley's first and interim charge. If you're talking about personnel, England should wipe the floor with them. Yeah. You know, there's no doubt of that. You know, then they should do that. The most they should be winning World Cups and Euros. Yeah. But they've not done it. And Ireland are always in their anxious chance. There's no doubt of that. You know, I've been interested. What do you guys believe to see if either plays against? Exactly. The defenders, the top quality. They talk about going for about 60, 70 million. No talking about their potentials as well. Yeah, I've been interested to see them playing against that level of player. Because that's where you get judged. Bari won paper. England should barter them. Yeah, absolutely. They should. But listening over there, it'll be difficult. I think it'll be a tight one. I think England will just edge it. But I think it'll be tight. Declan Rice will get a warm reception. We're in the main carlsley as well. Yeah, of course. Big carlsley had fought their odd carbs for. Yeah. I'm Jake Graylish. Jake Graylish had all the carbs all the way up to full level. Right. The big one. They'll get a nice reception, I guess. It's going to be a good weekend of football. I see the prime minister's going to be there. And the t-shirt, so they'll be there over for talks. And then go to the football. It's not too bad. That's from the harmony. Down to Lansdowne Road, as it was called then, the oldest stadium. How did you inject it? Did we win? Yeah, we beat them to one. I scored. I think they're just quiet. Oh, is it? Yeah. I've been doing it in quite a few years, guys. So what's going to happen? That's quiet. Yeah, but I think it's quiet. Honestly, you could hear up and drop something. I was just like, I bet I'll just get back up. Don't say what I'm doing here. You're not a good idea. So Sunday evening. We'll all be watching. What do we think? What kind of-- I think about a difficult night, Paul. I really do. I just think it's not because of the Scottish boys, just to the quality that Portugal have. Yeah. You know, I'm not talking about an elder. Take him out. It's silver, it's not that this world. A brilliant phenomenon. There's Leo. I can really top, top players. And I've done it time and time again. So three miles Scotland. I've loved that. I'd love-- listen, I'd love nothing better. I've scooted him out there. I'd be doing some assault. Fantastic. Do it that way. Barry. My heart says a point. I can't see it. For a symbol fact, to the quality that Portugal have got. I hope I'm totally wrong, but I think it could be a long night for Scotland. Disappointed a bit last night, but there's a lot to admire in the way we approached the game and the way we played. Yeah. They're people's trends. Exactly. Yeah. And this number tells you, Stevie Hoot is OK. I'm just saying, that's their players. That's their strengths. And they'll tell you, they prefer playing that way because that is Scotland. What is it tonight, Barry? Is it a stakeholder? No, no. I'm going for a chippy. There you go. I've known a chippy. Do you know what? I've known a chippy in a long time. So I love a chippy. I enjoy it. Peter, it's a fresh night. It's a fresh night. First night, don't you? Well, it's a fresh night. Thank you. Thanks, everyone, for tuning in all week and for making the switch as well. We're back on Monday night. Good luck to Scotland. Barry, you and I will be here with Mark Guidi on Monday. Hopefully it's about a good night, but it's-- Come on, Scotland. Come on, Scotland. Listen, you want to see the boys have come back from Lisbon? Yeah, at least I point in the bag. One of your favourite cities, Peter? Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Yes. OK, listen to them. And you can use this next in Enzoi. This is the good idea football show. Listen live, weeknights from five, on goal. Let's go!
