Good morning, everyone. Welcome to the Village Church. I am Mary, and I am the organizer for Village Kids. It's our elementary age program here, and yeah, welcome. Happy Sunday. Thank goodness for the rain, right? Yes. Okay, so there's a few announcements. I have to get my bearings like I'm so awake right now, but also sometimes when there's a new setting for me, I have to-- I know, thank you. I appreciate that. So I'm just going to keep talking until I figure this stuff out. Okay, so we have a worship guide. It's so amazing because there's so much on it. Okay, so if you will turn to the back of it, actually the middle of it and the back of it. It's got a track full of all this information I'm going to tell you. So if you forget anything I say, pick one of these up, okay? So big deal, tomorrow is Labor Day. Yes, that's what it is. Church office will be closed. No one will be here. Don't call. Don't email unless there's an emergency, okay? But I say that. I shouldn't have said that because we're always here for you. So yeah, just take it with a grain of salt. If you need waters from the Cynthia, she won't be here. How about that? That's always my thing. I have to plan around that. So church office is closed tomorrow. Next week is September 8. That is a huge, big Sunday for our church. So Pastor Alex is starting a new sermon series called Own the Vision. Taylor Couch, she'll be giving a ministry moment. She's amazing, and she has so much cool stuff. So be here for that. Also, our Sunday equipping classes are starting next week. You will see them referenced as SEC. We are not talking about football. We are talking about Sunday school, basically. Sunday equipping classes. We need help. Yay. So the adults are going to be doing a sermon discussion here in the sanctuary. So we also have youth for high school-aged kids and middle school-aged kids. We have a Sunday equipping class for Village Kids, which is the elementary school-aged kids. And we also have first steps, which is the nursery-aged kids. And we need help. We need help. So shout out to the people who always volunteer. We love you guys so much. We can't do this without you. More people. If you will give an hour or two of your time in the next three or four months, that is a big deal for these kids. So not only are you getting to know these kids who are covenant members, I think that's the term for it, covenant members of the church, but they're getting to know you, and you will be a blessing to them, and they will be a blessing to you. So please, if you have any interest at all, you can contact Marcus Nobles, who's not here today, because it's Labor Day weekend, Tiffany Williams, who's not here. She's always here, but she's not here today, because of Labor Day, or me, please. And, again, our information, I think it's on the back, or you can email the church and just tell them what you're interested in. We will help you help us. And we will, it's just so appreciated. So there you go. Okay, also next Sunday. If you are interested at all in being on the worship team, please, is it right after or right before, right after church service, okay, come up here and meet with our wonderful team. They're amazing. But if you're interested at all, please do that, and that's next Sunday. Communion. Okay, so this is another thing. I was thinking it's the last Sunday of every month. It is not. It is the fourth Sunday of every month, please mark that on your calendar. Communion's the fourth Sunday of every month, but so is our church meal. Yes. Yes. I'm excited about it, too, and after service, what we'll do, we'll have communion during service, but after service, please stay for a meal with our entire church. It's a potluck. Of course, we want everyone to bring food so we can all share, but if you just want to come fellowship and hang out with people and get a good meal, please do that. We want you here. So, yeah, fourth Sunday of the month. We're also, okay, so here's another thing. More information's on the back. I'm not going to read this, don't worry. So there's, it looks like VBS, but it's not, it's not summer VBS, it's village Bible study. Okay, so that starts in October. Again, if you are interested, we're going to have an elementary aged class and a nursery class, and it's not an intense class, it's just something for the kids to do tatechisms and stories and just being, loving on them while the adults are getting fed with the Bible study. If you're interested in helping out with that, and that's even less of a commitment than SEC, let me know, but all of that, that's going to be exciting. It's going to be on Wednesdays and it starts in October. There will be more information on that later. Okay, so at the Village Church, we believe giving ties and offerings is a form of worship, and you can do that three ways. So, look on the front of your worship guide. There is a QR code, please scan it, please visit our website because it's got information on giving, yes, yes, it's got information on giving, so please scan the QR code. We also are address, physical address is on the front, you can mail us a check, or there is an old fashioned, awesome box, offering box by the back doors. It's very clearly marked, and we thank you for your giving. All right, so these are the announcements. Welcome. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] This time we're going to have silent preparation, just to prepare our hearts for worship this morning. So I invite you to take this time to pray within your hearts to invite the Holy Spirit just to be with us in this space. [Music] We thank you for bringing us here, God, to worship and to praise your name, God. I pray that you be with those families who are traveling this weekend and spending time with their families, God. Thank you for this church, God. When we get to come together, even though we're broken sometimes, but not stay broken, God, because we can be put back together with your blood. So I thank you for your blood, Jesus, that you shed to wash our sins away, God, and to help us live a pure life, a life with you. So in this service, God, I pray that we will be reminded of that great love, God, that we will be reminded to share that love, not just within this family, God, but with the entire world. So we invite your Holy Spirit, God, to reign with us in this place right now. Above everybody, above all our problems, God, above our stresses, God, let your Holy Spirit, let your love, let your power reign over our lives. In Jesus name, I pray, amen. This morning's call to worship is taken from Revelation 22, one through five. Can we please stand to our feet? For our call to worship, taken from Revelation 22, verse one through five. I will read the leader version, and you guys will join me with the people. Revelation 22, one through five, and God's word says, "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God, and of the lamb, through the middle of the street of the city." Also on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit yielded its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything in person, the throne of God, and of the land, and the service will worship, if you see the space, this name will be on the borders, and the night will be shown on the bottom of the river. Amen. So as we remain standing for worship this morning, I want us to just put our hands together. We seem kind of tired this morning. Let's just put our hands together. Let's give God some praise. This first song says, "Break every chain." I want you to think of all the things that beset you, all the temptations, all the things that sometimes drag us down. This song just says, "We're going to break the chain. We're going to break the chains." Hallelujah. Break every chain. Glory to God. There is power in the name of Jesus. Do you believe that this morning? There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. Break every chain. Break every chain. Break every chain. That's the whole song. There is power. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is an army rising up. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is no great church. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. There is an army rising up. I'm Marcellia. Today I'll be doing the prayer of supplication and the scripture reading. So, let's go to the Lord and prayer. Hi, God. It's us. Thank you for all that you have provided. Thank you for the good days and the opportunity to praise you. Thank you for the bad days and the opportunity to exercise our faith and depend on you. God, you said as your children all we have to do is ask and it will be provided. You said that our will should be aligned with your will. So, Father, we come to you today with a request in offering all that we have to give our brokenness. We ask that you use our brokenness to make us more like you in that reshaping and that in that reshaping you will give us every desire of our hearts because they will be your desires too. God, I pray your will will will be done in our hearts, in our lives, in this place, in this world, in your world, as it is in heaven. In God, I pray that you will give us the gift of seeing your will so that we can be delighted along with you in what you've done. I pray this and all things in Jesus' name. Amen. All right. Our scripture reading today, if you can stand if you're able, our scripture reading today comes from Philippians 2, 9 through 11. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue declared that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the very glory of the Father. This is the Word of God. And if you have your Bible, please open it too. Turn this off. Philippians 2, it takes today will be verses 9 through 11. Please join me as I ask the Holy Spirit to bless the preaching of the Word. As we just saw in Holy Spirit, you are our counselor and our comforter. You are the deposit that guarantees our inheritance. You are the one who lives inside of us supernatural. And so Holy Spirit, we ask that you will minister to us today, continue to minister to us as we begin the preaching of the Word. And I pray for all of this in Christ's wonderful name. Amen. He's coming. That's the message throughout the area. It's spreading from mouth to mouth, from person to person, from ear to ear. It's actually the talk of the marketplace. It's the whispers in the synagogue. Jesus is coming to Jerusalem on the Passover. He's coming to Jerusalem for the Passover. And the emotions of the people are high, people are really high. And we feel with all these emotions and kind of like some of us feel when we're at a concert or a rally or someone that we really want to see. We feel with all these positive emotions. And that is the mood of the trial for entry. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. A massive crowd head out waving palm branches in their hearts. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. Jesus is making his way into Jerusalem. Jesus eventually rides into Jerusalem. Now what kind of animal does he use? No, he's arriving on a donkey's coat. And so I wasn't there, but I wonder if the mood changed and the vibe changed from excitement to possibly a little disappointment. Like our mood would change. If you attended an event that did not meet your expectations, you would feel it certainly. And so the return of the king riding on a meek and humble beast isn't what the crowd expected. It's not what they expected. And Jesus is okay not meeting their expectations. Okay. Okay. For he knows that his path to glory differs from the past to the past to the past to the past to the past to glory differs from the past that many expect him to take. Don't you have people in your life that expect you to take a certain path and that's not the path you really want to take? You know what that feels like? And John chapter 12, John chapter 12 verses 23 and 24, Jesus says through the disciples that our word has come for the Son of a man to be glorified. Truly, truly I say to you unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the king of Israel will fall like a grain of wheat into the earth and die. He who comes in the name of the Lord will experience humiliation. I don't have my sign, but humiliation. Like many of us have experienced in our lives. Have you ever been humiliated? Made fun of? Mark turned into a meme on social media. In school, church, family events. And if you have ever been humiliated, then you know what it feels like. It doesn't feel good to be made of shame, though. Made to look foolish for something you said and did. Because it hurts. Humiliation, it sucks you down mentally, emotionally and physically. And beloved, Jesus understands. He can relate to you. And this is to you. For he himself experiences humiliation and he knows what it feels like. His very name is humiliated during his time on earth. It is. And Jesus, he welcomes and accepts this humiliation. It's not forced upon him by people. The Roman government didn't force it upon him. The Jewish religious leaders of him. His disciples didn't force it upon him. The crowd gathered in Jerusalem watching him ride into the city on a donkey did not force it upon him. Look at verses five through eight here. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in a form of God, did not count equality with God. He can be grasped, but made himself nothing. Taking the form of a servant then being born in the likeness of men had been found in human form. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Jesus willingly chooses to endear humiliation. You know what it's like you know how this when you're given an assignment and you're about someone and you are expected to complete it by a due date. Who knows what that stills like? Have you ever had that in school or from a boss? Or if you're on a team? Or if you're in a static group? No one likes being a static group with someone who doesn't do that part of this assignment, right? So we know what it's like. If you're given an assignment, you have those that's going to forge ahead, then you have those that procrastinate. You know, they wait to the last minute. Which one are you? Which one are you? Are you one who forges ahead or you the one is like, well, it ain't due into two weeks, so I got time. Which one? What about Jesus? Does he force ahead or does he procrastinate? You see, he's given an assignment by God the Father. He's given an assignment. And the Father expects Jesus to complete it by a due date. So, will he procrastinate? Or will he forge ahead? No, Jesus forges ahead to complete his assignment, even though it ain't going to be. Even though he's going to be humiliated, humiliated along the way. He didn't let all those things stop him from completing the assignment that the Father gave him. He forged ahead and completed the work. And John 8, verse 29, Jesus says, "And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me for I always do the things that are pleasing to him." And John, in chapter 12, verse 27, gospel John, Jesus says, "Now is my soul troubled? And what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? For this purpose I have come to this hour." And in John 17, verse 4, he says, "To the Father, I have glorified you on earth having accomplished the work you gave me to do." He does it. Jesus humbles himself by becoming obedient, even obedient to the point of death, even death in the cross. He finishes the work the Father gave him. And what is that work? It's the work of redemption. It's the same. Cosmic redemption. The redemption of all of creation, not just for our souls. It's the redemption of all things. And how does he do it? It's through his perfect obedience. His passive obedience and his active obedience. And his active obedience is him fulfilling all the requirements of the law. He lives a perfect life without sin. Perfect. He did that. Everything in the Old Testament all those laws, Jesus fulfilled them with his earthly life. He did that. And his passive obedience, that's his atoning death. That's his sacrifice on the cross, commented to bear God's wrath for our sins. He did that. And both of those are part of his humiliation. So the Catechism question 27 says, Christ's humiliation consisted of his being born. And that, in a low condition, made under the law, undergoing the miseries of this life, the wrath of God, the cursed death of the cross, and been buried and continuing on the power of death for a time. That's what he did. And this humiliation of Christ is for the Father's glory. For the Father's glory in your benefit. My benefit. As I said earlier, he fulfills all the requirements of the law for you. And I'd like to take that in. He fulfilled all of them perfectly on your behalf. Not only did he fulfill all the requirements of the law, he also atoned for all your sins through his death for you. So that when you come to seventh faith in Jesus, you get all of Christ's righteousness is credited to your account which is associated with him. And he brings it not just to the positive, but he overflows it so that when the Father sees you, he sees his son. The blood of Jesus and the righteousness of Jesus, deposited into your account. And Jesus gets all of your sin. That's what the theologians call the great exchange. That without his humiliation that we cannot stand is. And so the question now is whose resume and whose righteousness are you standing on? His or yours. His or yours. Salvation is in Jesus's name alone. Forgiveness is in his name. Life is in his name. And all those things are available to you because of his life and because of his death and because of his resurrection. But do we believe it? But do we believe it? And now when you come to faith in him, when you give your life to Christ, when you are saved in his name, please know you may also experience humiliation for the sake of that name. You may experience that. We still struggle. It's the wrong and seventh struggle, but when I want to do good, evil lies close at hand. So we still fall short. And so that's why there's faith, and that's why there's repentance. We live by faith and repentance as Christians. Faith and repentance, faith and repentance. 'Cause we still fall short. There are other times when you make it sulfur for his name sake. You may experience persecution for his name sake. And as some of our brothers and sisters are experiencing right now in other parts of the world. And when those things happen he is there to comfort you. He says in the Sherman on the Mount, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteous and sake. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven." You know, there's a process that many of us go through when we're selecting a name for our baby. When we're selecting a name for our family pet or for our kids to select the name for their favorite stuffed animal. You know, when me and Raquel were going through this process I felt like we were in a community meeting when we decided on Tracy's name and Madison's name. We just had meetings all the time. And so, but when it comes to choosing these names, there's sometimes a startfulness. And in the 10th of the hour they go in there. Because the name has to sound right. You have to be intellectually right. And for some of us it has to feel right. There's a name feel right. And sometimes the name we choose has significant meaning for us. Maybe it's the name from a grandmother or a grandfather long ago. You want your child to carry that name forward. You see, like why Jesus has a name that sounds right. It's still logically right. It even feels right. And this name is really a title that carries with it power, responsibility and blessings. One seminary professor said Dennis Johnson says, "This name is better understood as an official title conferred on Jesus at the time of the resurrection, signifying His supremacy over all as the glorified God-man." This name is to be understood as a title conferred on Jesus' father after the resurrection. And the title signifies Jesus' supremacy over all things as the glorified God-man. You see, the name of Jesus isn't just humiliated on account of His obedience. His name is also exalted. I'll tell you, man. It's exalted. Are you familiar with the phrase give people the flowers right after the life? And what does that phrase mean? When someone says give that person the flowers. Congregation participation time. What does it mean? Yes. It's a way that you express love and gratitude and thankfulness for someone and for their role in your life. Have you given any one flowers this week? Has anyone given you flowers this week? The father gives Jesus his flowers. He gives them his flowers. Paul writes, "Therefore God highly exalts Jesus. His highest exaltation is his flowers. Jesus is the servant in Isaiah 52. He's the servant. Then Isaiah 52 verse 13 says, "Behold, my servant shall act wisely. He shall be high and lifted up and shall be exalted." That's Jesus. He's the servant in Isaiah 52. God highly exalts him by bestowing on Jesus the name that's above every name. The name is above every name. In everything, y'all, Jesus is supreme and pre-eminent. The father has put everything under the feet of his son. He has a higher rank than all people, all nations, all governments, all kings, all presidents, all movements, all tribes, Jesus. He sets a throne of that. And every other name is under him, every name in heaven, every name on earth, and every name on the earth. Jesus is exalted to the highest degree. The highest degree. Remember the confession of faith from Catechism, Brother Catechism 28 about Jesus' exaltation. His exaltation consists of him rising again from the dead on the third day, ascending into heaven, setting that God's right hand and coming to judge the world on the last day. That's his exaltation. So Jesus alone, he stands alone as king of the hill. If you ever play that game, you know what it's like. You've got to try to take the other person down to become king. Jesus is taking Jesus off the throne. He alone is king of the hill. And everybody else is looking up to him. You will look up up to him now, but eventually you will look up to him. We all will. And so as his people, we learn how to give respect and honor through his name. We can worship his name, and we confess allegiance to his name. It's hard for us in America. We have allegiances to other things. These other many saviors that we give our allegiances to. And they are poor saviors. They are poor idols. And they cannot be the king of your life. Cannot be. Cannot be. If you're going into this election, think you're going to place a man or a woman on that hill that's just like you and me. There's only one saviour. There's only one king. And he's king over everything. God's not just God over one country. He's God over it all. You see those new images from that satellite that goes out? That's sort of the Webster satellite? God's king of that. That's our God stuff. He did that. Those are his creations. Singing glory to his name. And so that's Jesus. And so what's the name that's conferred upon Jesus at the resolution? The name is the title and it's Lord. Curiosity in the Greek. Lord. Jesus is Lord. Meaning he has absolute dominion over the entire creation. The entire universe belongs to him. That's what we serve. That's how big and powerful our Jesus is. In Matthew 28, what did he tell the disciples? He says, "All authority on earth and on heaven has been given to me." Now, if someone else said that, we're like, "Come on, do stop being arrogant. You don't have all the authority on earth and heaven." No, he does. And so the question for us is, is he a lunatic? Is he a narcissist? Or is Jesus who he says he is? Can't be in between. He has all authority. All earth and in heaven. This title, "Lord, also indicates Jesus' identity." It identifies Jesus with a personal name of God in the Old Testament, which is what? It's Yahweh. Yahweh. And Paul takes language from Isaiah 45, language in Isaiah 45 verses 22 and 23, and he connects it to Jesus here. And Isaiah 45, that section is about judgment and it's also about salvation. And in Isaiah 45 verses 22 and 23, it says, "Turn to me and be saved." All the ends of the earth. This is Yahweh speaking. For I am Elohim. There is no other. I myself have sworn from my mouth, has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return to me every knee we're by and every tongue shall swear allegiance." Those very words, those very words in verse 23 is used of Jesus right here in verses 10 through 11 as a result of his exaltation. Look at verses 10 and 11. It says, "So at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, and on the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father." So what is he doing here? That Jesus has to be in overall and Jesus is Yahweh. The same thing that the Lord said in Isaiah 45, Paul is saying that of Jesus. And what he's talking about here, Paul, he's talking about what we're doing here right now and we do once a week at one moment at some time it's going to be a universal worship service and for some of us it's going to be a good time and for some of us it ain't. So Paul is saying when the consummation of all things when the king returns, not on a donkey, but this time on a horse, there will be a public acknowledgement of who Jesus is. And Jesus says, all y'all are going to put some respect on my name at some point. At some point it's coming. When the king returns every rational creature with worship and acknowledge Jesus as king, everyone in heaven, everyone on earth and everyone under the earth would do it willingly or unwillingly. So for now, for those of us here and those who may be tuning on line, it's, is Jesus your Lord and Savior today? Are you worshiping him today? Does he have your allegiance today? None of this stuff that we have is lasting forever. All of it might not be in our lifetime, but we're moving towards something. If we're not then Christians, we are the most foolish people in the world. How pity on us if this isn't true? Pity us. But if it is true, then the king is going to return. And when he returns, it's going to be for the father's glory and for the benefit of his people. Because his exaltation it benefits you. You know why it benefits you? Because it strengthens your hope for your future exaltation in his name. He was exalted and eventually his people will experience the same benefit. That should give you hope. Yeah, it's hard down here. Yeah, it's hard. Relationships are hard. Families is hard. Being in church is hard. Learning how to love a guy, you don't fully understand. All this stuff is hard. All of it's hard. If you have doubts, it's hard, it's difficult. And so that's why we constantly live by faith and we live by repentance. And we ask the Holy Spirit, help me to live by faith, help my unbelief and give me a hope because Christian hope is real because if God raised him up then he will one day raise us up to. One day raise us up to. Now, in the already and not yet, we have to realize that as we're navigating this life we are not navigating this life alone. That the Word says Jesus is sitting next to God at God's right hand and Roman says he still may intercession for you. This stuff cannot just be in our head. It has to be here. Christian truth cannot just be intellectual. It has to be felt and it has to be done. It has to be here too. Not just in books. When it gets here, when you feel it, it changes your life. Is it here of saints? Is it here? In John 14 verses two and three Jesus says to disciples in my father's house for many rooms. Mm-mm-mm. So you mean there ain't a motel sick? No, no, no. There's many rooms in my father's house. Five-star hotel. The best of the best. And he said if it was not so, I would have told you that I go and prepare a place for you. Now, he's talking to the 12 but he's also talking to you. I go and prepare a place for you. So that means when Jesus ascended, he's preparing kingdom for you. He's preparing a place for us. He's still working for us in glory. Prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself. And where I am, you may be also. If I go and prepare a place, I will return. I will take you to myself and where I am, all of y'all will be with. Does that excite you? Is it just here or are you feeling it, man? Yes, I want to go. Yes, when will you return? Yes, that gives me hope because I know this ain't all there is. Because if this is all there is, pity us. But the word says for Christians, our best life is yet to come. Let us pray. Father, Son, thank you that you are preparing a place in glory for your beloved. That's such a wonderful picture. That you can pan a home for us. A very own place where we can be in your presence, where we'll be able to see you face to face. And so until then, do your Holy Spirit. Strengthen the hope that we have in you. To hope that one day all will be made right. To hope that one day all the suffering and the sickness and the pains that we feel in our body, but one day not be there. Until then, give us the nourishment, the strength and the courage and the boldness to faithfully continue to take one step at a time. The next right step. The next right move. Knowing that Jesus is before us. Jesus is behind us. Jesus is to our right. Jesus is to our left. And Jesus is in your name that I pray. Amen. Will you please stand thanks.
