[MUSIC] Fan Morning Show Sports at Five Night in the Fan, Ben and Sam McKee. It's Friday of a long weekend, Labor Day weekend. >> It's over. >> You don't have to be like that. >> That's over. >> I mean, but technically it's not. For the kiddos, it's over. It's over. >> It's on midnight losers. >> [LAUGH] >> Yeah, and by the way, I don't know if you're aware of this. Tuesday after Labor Day is, at least in Halton, a PA day. >> Yeah, if I was a teacher, I'd be, I wouldn't want that. >> Like, I just had a summer of PA days. >> Yeah, they were all for two months. >> Yeah, give me an extra Friday somewhere I've seen. >> So yeah, they go back to school on Wednesday. >> But do you just extend the scariest by a day? >> Yeah. >> But just get this baby started. >> Honestly. >> Yeah, no, my kiddos. >> Yeah, it's surprisingly chill about it, but yeah, it feels like we're ready to go back to school, especially the young one, because he's starting grade one this year, so he gets out to the kindergarten cage, so he's excited about that. >> So I think it's funny though, you still have the inherent feeling in you when Labor Day's over, that I still have the school kid in me where I do feel different after Labor Day. >> No, I don't have it. >> No, I have it. I have it. I guess I'm just a much younger man than you. >> I'm much closer to your school days than I am. >> I don't know if there's something that starts getting cooler and it just, you know, football's on, it just, it feels like a completely different time of year. >> You know what? >> Four days later. >> It's crazy. >> You were a man that loves some golf. >> I love golf and summer. >> I love hot. >> Oh my God. >> I love hot summer. >> Too hot, I can do without, but no, it's summer is amazing. >> I love the summer. >> I'm like winter. >> Like you're an idiot. >> No. >> Well, don't you work with a guy in Justin Borne who's like, yeah, give me winter over summer. >> No, I don't think so. >> Buddy, you ask him, but I have Justin Borne of Golf Canada. He plays every single day. So I don't think-- >> I don't follow him. I should follow him on golf. >> Oh, yeah, you got to follow him on golf Canada. >> Yeah, yeah. >> You can see his 71s and 72s he's been posting. >> Yeah, I'll bet. >> Yeah. No, I believe he's like, give me winter over summer guy. >> I don't know if that's true. >> I think-- >> I'll confirm. I'll catch him. >> I'll have the answer before the end of the day. >> At least fall over summer. But yeah, you're a guy that likes some golf, but you shut it down early. >> Yeah. >> Once the first leaf hits the ground, I feel like you end your season. >> As soon as October hits, especially now with the, you know, what I do with Kipram Borne, please talk about it. The second October first hit, season's over. I'm not even going to try. But I've got a lot of great golf schedules in September, including this weekend, a couple of next week. I'm stacked up with good rounds for the rest of this month, and then it'll be done. >> I ain't going to push it. I've played well into November. >> Yeah. You're also played in like February this year, are they? >> Was it this year that I've definitely played in February? I can't remember if I played in February this year. >> I'm also just a little bit on weakling. >> Yeah. >> I don't love you. >> I don't love playing in the super cold. They're like the super-- >> But this year, I went to the thrift store and found myself some title-less winter gloves. >> No, you're absurd. [LAUGHTER] >> If I got away at two, it's too cold. >> Ah, there's nothing wrong, a little too gatcher. >> Disagree. >> I have very sensitive ears. >> Yeah, ten degrees, sometimes somewhere in a two. Anyways, the Brandon and I uke holdout is over. >> Yeah, so-- >> Enough of these holdouts, like what? It's always just ends in the same thing here, like-- >> Not always. >> I guess it's worse. >> I mean, what if Jones won did, last year, missed one game for the Kansas City Chiefs, and yeah, the Brandon and I uke one. >> CD Lamb. >> CD Lamb. I mean, the CD Lamb won, obviously that ended with him getting an absurd contract that makes him the second highest paid non-quarterback. >> Go work. >> Yeah, the Brandon and I uke one, especially if the report is true, that apparently this was the deal on the table at the beginning of August, from the San Francisco 49ers, four year, $120 million extension, keeping them through 2028 in San Francisco. Especially if this was the deal he could have had all along going through, all the ins and outs, and how close he came to maybe becoming a patriot before he nixed that, and said he wouldn't sign an extension into England. >> Yeah, it feels like perhaps a failure on Brandon and I uke's part, if, in fact, that is the correct reporting on it. >> I mean, it's hard to call it a failure because he has now paid the same amount of money as Tyree Kill, which to me, I know it's inflation or whatever, but he makes more than Devontae Adam, Jill, and Waddle. I think Brandon and I uke's really good, and I actually think he's super underrated. Every time I watch that offense, he always pops off the page to me, but I am surprised he got that money after he got his cake and he did too, right? There's a talk of him going to New England, and then there was like the Steelers, Dalian, and everyone's like, "Oh, is he going to leave? Is he going to go?" And then he just gets to stay with the awesome team for the fifth most money or sixth most money in the NFL for a wide receiver. >> Yeah. Good on him. Good agents. He's got a good agent. >> I guess. >> Yeah. And if that was the deal that was available at the beginning of the month, he didn't have to go through training camp, so the bonus. >> Yeah. Like he literally just got to not work, and he got to be like, "Work out on his own, not get hit." And now it's like, "I have $30 million a year, now I get to play football." >> Yeah. >> Not bad. >> All right. Time now for our real side of it. >> This insider is brought to you by Don Valley, North Lexus, where you can expect excellence online and in the showroom, visit donvalleynorthlexus.com. Today's insider, the great Charles Davis of the NFL on CBS. How's it going, Charles? >> Going great, Ben, going great, Sam, and love to break down on IU, and Sam, I believe you were talking about, you know, he could have had this number way back when and went through the different permutations, it ended up back there. I'm not surprised at all. My prediction from day one was that he would end up in San Francisco, 49ers have a track record of dealing with difficult contracts and finding ways to get it done. Now they get to set their sights on the one they have to have done. And that's Trent Williams, the left tackle. And the other part about what you were saying, I believe, Sam was, it's hard to believe that he's paid the same as tie, re-kill, more than devotees, he's a heck of a receiver, he really is. But I had multiple people say to me yesterday, 30 mil, that seems like a lot for him. And that's just kind of like the general consensus. And I think it's kind of an accurate one. People respect him, he's a big time player. But for him to make that much money compared to these other guys we're talking about and don't look at the same way we do quarterbacks, because the quarterbacks, we have realized we're not paying them because they're ranked one through whatever. We're paying them based up when their contract comes up and what leverage they have at that point. Yeah. I you. Did he have leverage? Kinda sorta. Did the 49ers want him absolutely, but they said a number and we're able to stick to it almost reminded me of Saquon Barkley with the Giants. They want to be a giant for life, right? Yeah. So the 13, he turned it down, ended up playing for franchise tag, which was last. And now he's in Philadelphia for essentially the same number the Giants offered a couple of years ago. So it's funny how this all works out, but it's good for the 49ers. And the last thing I'll say is we move on. You're right. He got to sit out training camp. He missed all of it. But if you go back and look at in time, the people that missed training camp missed preseason, do they tend to have the seasons you expect? Mm-hmm. Oftentimes dancers don't. Yeah. It's true. And the Chiefs lost game one of the season last year of the Lions without Chris Jones. He ended up having a pretty good year though. But, um, so you've got the Bengals and Patriots week one. There's another wide receiver hole out there. Is that Taylor? Maybe it jumped the gun there saying that Jamar Chase would be back in the fold. He's still yet to participate. He's he's still a hold in. Do you think, you know, the same happens for Jamar Chase that we see him in that week up week one matchup you've got on CBS? It's a great question because remember the breaks went on for IU initially before he signed and they went on obviously for Jamar Chase. As you mentioned, Zach Taylor gone to his press cop said, Oh, yeah, he'll be back tomorrow. We're good to go. And then CD lamb signed and everybody saw those numbers and everybody said, hold on a second here. You can see him skidding like the Flintstones coming to a stop in his car and see all the smoke go up. Hold on a second, fellas. I don't think so. This is going to be an interesting one because the Bengals of old, I would have said almost no chance of this happening because they were really, really tight on the numbers. Nowadays, I know the influence is different. Mike Brown still owns the team and runs the team, but his his children, his daughter Katie is actively involved now. There are others who have more influence. This may still get done. But again, it will probably go to the wire and let's be honest about it. You know what me and my crew are rooting for? Come on. Let's get inside, baby. Let's go. Yeah. Let's go. Yeah. It's actually a interesting team for me, the Bengals, because I've heard a lot of smoke on both sides with them, sort of the revenge factor after last year. Joe Burrow being hurt, people kind of forgetting about them and that division heard a lot of that. But also hear a lot of concern with the wrist on Joe Burrow and how it's like, you know, he hasn't thrown a ton in training camp and there's a lot of whispers about him not being fully recovered. Which side of the Bengals are you on this year, Charles? Because I'm having a hard time forecasting what's going on with them. Yeah, it's a tough one, right? I tend to be a little more optimistic with them because they've shown me in the last X number of years from the times that Taylor took over the team and built, because you remember how bad they were the first couple of years. And built to the point now where they were winning division titles, going to a Super Bowl. The reason I'm more bullish on them is last year, despite every issue they had, they finished nine and eight, which was fourth in their division, but one game away from being in the playoffs. And a team that very easily could have gone totally south and we would have gone, yeah, I get it. Quarterbacks gone. This guy's heard that guy's out. I just think that they built a really good structure and that very, very overused word culture, but they have and they play to it in a big way. What I'm going to find interesting is to see what they do because they have a new offense coordinator in Dan Pitcher, but still Zach Taylor is a play caller. Will they have the running game that they want to do the things that they tend to do with burrow because Joe mix has been that guy. He's been the hammer. He's not there. Is is one of the backup runners now going to jump forward and be that guy for them so they can go ahead and do it because now we're hearing rumors of some object P. Ryan may be resigned by them having been cut out of Denver. So we'll see. You will not get Drake May in that my matchup, the, the first round, I know. I mean, it's a double edged sword for Patriots. Fans, right? Because yeah, you want to see the third overall pick and the two quarterbacks selected ahead of him are going to play week one, but the state of that franchise and specifically the offensive line, maybe it's probably better for his overall health that that it is going to be Jacobi Brissette. Did the Patriots make the right call here? I think they did it for talking about a normal call. Okay. Here's what you're doing. This is what you have. I got up crazy early this morning just to do some things I flipped on the TV and a replay of the Patriots Washington last preseason game was on and I caught it exactly when Drake May came into the game could not have caught it at a better time and he led the long drive for the first touchdown that he threw another at me through some great throws, footwork looked terrific. He made some nice runs and Chris Collins were so I respect greatly made a great point in there. And you feel like Brissette's going to be the starter because you start him and then you can bring May in, but if because if you start May, there's no turning back, right? If you start him from day one, you know, yo, yo, or youngster in and out of the lineup, that doesn't work. But here if you want to call him and tell him to put on his cape and come in, that works pretty well. He said, but the flip side is if he's not the starter, he doesn't get many reps because that's the way the NFL works, the starter takes almost all every rep going during the week to get ready to play your backup. If he has to play in the game, he hasn't had many reps in practice. So which way do you go? I was hoping, of course, for the best story that they would go with Drake May. I understand why they're going with Brissette. You mentioned the offensive line is a little unsettled. They looked it in the ballgame against Washington, all of those things. But I'm going to make a prediction that I don't think it's much of a prediction. Drake May is going to be the starting quarterback before game four. I mean, it just doesn't take long. Like the idea that you draft the quarterback in the top 10 and he sits all season, it's always an outlier. And I know we all point to Mahomes sitting the first year and even with the Bengals way back in the day. Carson Palmer sat his entire rookie season. Steve McNair sat the first two years when he went to Houston before they became Tennessee. They're probably some others that I miss. Rogers is always an example that people use. Rogers. Yeah. Yeah. Green Green had that unusual deal where Rogers sat behind far. And they did it again. They did it again. That behind Rogers. Yeah. Yeah. But those are major outliers. Because if you go back and look, how many more of them started day one? A lot more start day one or very early. Remember when Blake Bortles was a surprise number three, picked the Jacksonville, we all about fell out of their chair like, what just happened here? And then they said, we're going to, you know, I got red shirt Blake this first year. We have drew, we have drew a heady here. We have Chad Henny here. He's going to be our starter. I think it was like week three. Yeah. So my whole thing is old space. You tell us that I get it. I don't believe you. And your owner is going to come down and go, hey, you're doing what you want to do. You're in charge. But boy, Drake may look pretty good. That's me. Yeah. And this is how it works. So I'm saying it's not going to be terribly long. You won't start day one, but it won't be week 13. He'll get his first started to be a lot earlier than that. Yeah. I've done some reading on the, on the Patriots. And I'm not exactly the biggest expert when it comes to offensive line play, but everything that I've read about their offensive line is that it's one of their bottom units in the whole NFL. So if I'm a Patriots fan, like I do want to see them, but I think the number one goal has to be like, hey, can we get this guy through the season without a separated shoulder or a broken arm or like all this stuff? And you feel bad for Jacobi is like, well, the only reason you're here is like, yeah, you're a meat shield. Like it's just it's, you know, you get your chance to play, but God, that's going to suck. You're just like, well, I, we don't want our young guy to get hurt, but it's, you're right. But probably don't work out. But you got to be careful with me, man. Like it's, he's your meal ticket and that line stinks. You're right. And if you had other places to go to lean on, you can, that you can minimize the offensive line a little bit. You know, if you had a dynamic runner, they can make it work for you a little bit. If you knew your receiving core was going to really, really give you some great play. They, they are hoping this receiving core is better and it looks better. All right. Taekwam Thornton looks the best I've seen and looks since he came into the league. DiMario Douglas, Jalen Polk, I like these youngsters playing, but they have to prove themselves. KJ Osborne coming over from Minnesota. But to your point, Drake May would have to be able to get the ball to them without bending up on his back every single time. So you're exactly right. That's something I know that they're considering, but you know, it's going to outweigh it all. If they get off to a bad start and they need something to spark them, they need better headlines. They need whatever. Sure. The fans will be super patient. The fans will be super patient. Yeah. Yeah. And at that point, you know, you just say, Drake, you got to put out a little more armor. It's just going to be how it goes as the way this league works. Yeah. Yeah. Jets offensive line. Part of the reason why Aaron Rodgers only lasted five snaps in his. Hopefully he makes it to your week two match up there. Yeah. Hey, to your point, to your point on that one, he mentioned it all. We watched our knocks, right? Yeah. And there was no doubt in anyone's mind that Aaron wasn't exactly thrilled with what was going on up front. I mean, we watched the game and he was having those moments. So when the Joe Douglas, the GM do he went and got Tyron Smith from the Cowboys, right? They drafted. They drafted Olu Sonu from Penn State. They got Morgan Moses picked him up from Baltimore. They tried to beef up this line. They want to get Elijah Barrett Tucker at a guard position where he can be an all pro player. They'd end up keep moving around. So they made moves to try and get better so that Aaron Rodgers could last longer than four plays. So the quote making the rounds was the anonymous NFL agent via the athletic Charles, which I'm sure you saw, there was complete disarray over there. Look at how they've handled Aaron Rodgers has one player had more power than him. He skipped minicamp, they have been able to convert him into it. They have not been able to convert him into a team player. The vibe inside the building is terrible. I mean, is that something nothing is that surprising? That seems like a lot to me. I understand headlines and clicks and what that's a grabber right there, right? I've been around the Jets for a while. We didn't have them last year, but I don't see disarray. Are there times when people may have an arch-diver about things? Yeah, sure. Absolutely. When he took the trip to Egypt and the Jets went, oh, well, it's an unexcused absence. I don't think it caused as much rumbling as on the inside as it did on the outside. I think this really centers in effect and Nathaniel Hackett was kind of the handpicked offense coordinator for him and things didn't go well without Aaron. So you're like, okay, so strictly Aaron then, right? Because Nathaniel Hackett is an OC and they didn't really make very many good plays last year without him. That's what you need. The OC4. So I think it kind of centers in on that one. But the idea that they're in total disarray, I'm not buying it at all. I don't see that at all. So just sticking in the AFC and looking at the Chiefs here, because I actually think that this is, you know, people talking about their biggest storylines and all this stuff that heads into the season. To me, there's no bigger storyline than this team chasing three Super Bowls in a row. No teams ever done it. We all know that. But for me, you know, everybody's talking about the go and everyone's talking about who's the best player and how Patrick Mahomes is on that sort of track. But if they were to find a way to win three Super Bowls in a row, be the first team that's ever done it, give Patrick Mahomes four Super Bowls in his career, that would put them into the upper echelon of all-time great franchises. And it's just they have a real possibility their offense is much improved. It feels like it's kind of the old Chiefs is back, their defense is still really good. This is a really fascinating one for me and see how the Chiefs actually try to go back so back to back to back. Yeah. Yeah, I'm with you on that one. And here's the thing, you know, if we want to talk about the goat conversation, if they won this third one in a row, you could actually legitimately have the conversation because it's not just simply that Brady won more Super Bowls and that's the end of the discussion. Okay. That's not all there is to it. There's more to it than that. Mahomes would definitely be in the discussion then. And then everybody can find it out, right? The Kansas City people know England people because they could throw hands at any point. But to me in looking at this is Andy Reed and how he comes into a season and finds different motivations for his guys and how the players themselves come into it with a little bit different motivation, you know, because you've got to find something. You guys know when you've accomplished something, your first impulse is to relax. I did it. Okay. In fact, I'm good. Do you find it in you to climb that mountain again and maybe higher? Sometimes you go, I'm good already did it once, you know, I ran the marathon. Why am I going to run a second one? They found a way to do it twice. Are they going to find a way to do it third time? And the last thing I'm going to say is even though the NFL is so national and global now, I think it helps them that they're in Kansas City and not in New York, not in LA, not in other places where everyone becomes a star. Travis Kelsey's a star, Patrick Mahomes is a star, Chris Jones as great as he is. You see him doing commercials? No, you just don't see Kansas City guys pop up every which place. The only two you see are who? Mahomes and Kelsey. Lot of Kelsey. So I think that a lot of Kelsey is going to be plenty more Kelsey, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever your Kelsey meter is, just take it and kick it to the curb because it's going to feed it to whatever you want. All right. You saw he in his $100 million deal for their podcast and I've heard that I've heard they're going to do a breakfast cereal. And from what I've heard with the ingredients, it sounds like they're six-year-old selves put together the breakfast ingredients cereal on. So that's just where they are right now. They are living their best lives, okay? But at my point being, who else on Kansas City do you know? Yeah, it's true. You really don't. Yeah. You know, they suck up all of it, but the rest of the team kind of gets cover from it and are kind of relieved of the process. So they just get to go about putting football for the most part. It's a general view guys. It's not 100%. It's not, you know, it's not tried and proven. But to me, and I'll leave it with this, when Dallas was winning Super Bowls, it was the most amazing thing because they managed to win those, what, three and four years with 25 guys having their own radio show, TV show, this, that and everything. And that's not a formula for success. They actually overcame what should be disaster. And in Kansas City, you don't have that formula at all. You have two guys that if you pop on your TV, you'll see the rest of them. Yeah. It's great as they are. You don't see them. That's a great point. It's less than a week until we get to see that team play against the Ravens. They open up the season on Thursday night, Charles. Always an absolute pleasure. Thanks, man. Thanks, man. Hey, thank you guys. I appreciate it. You take care of yourselves. Thanks. You too. Charles Davis, the NFL on CBS. He was our insider, brought to you by Don Valley, North Lexus, where you can expect excellence online and in the showroom, visit Don Valley, North Lexus.com. I had half a thought that he would throw in like, oh, he's the best, I had half a thought that he would throw in like a max patch already, rumor, comment or something. I've got a scoop for you. So I'm looking at the Kelsey mix. Travis and Jason have created a cereal mashup that combines not one, not two, but three childhood favorites, man. Cinnamon toast crunch, Lucky Charms and Reese Puffs. Oh, Mike. It's gross. Are you a cereal guy? I quit that stuff a long time ago. Yeah. Me too. My children love it. They have multiple times a day. Yeah. I think that's the target demo. What kind though? Okay. So bad about letting them have like the sugar cereal, sweet active kids, they let them have sugar cereal. Yeah. And then, you know, I try and pull it back and it's like, well, not so sweet. You get the cornflakes, but you're also like, it's just, it doesn't seem as bad as like the fruit loops. But yeah, no, I, I used to be a big cereal guy. I can't tell you the last time I had cereal. So yeah, you know, a bowl of milk at my age and my gut status, not great, but so I've kind of quit that stuff. Yeah. But I used to love cereal and I used to love Lucky Charms. I love that. I was never a Lucky Charms guy. Well, the thing is, my parents, God love them. We're very, very health focused and I wasn't really allowed to have Lucky Charms rightfully so because of just literal marshmallows for breakfast. Yeah. But I would, they would always compromise with some, you know, once in a while, honeynet Cheerios, which I adore, that would always be my go to, but I think this is an insane cereal combination. Oh, yeah. It's not even good. No, it doesn't sound good. They're not complimentary. They're not complimentary. Chocolate and marshmallows for the flavoured marshmallows. No, marshmallows. Like it's not a good combination. So I will say cinnamon toast crunch is a pretty fire cereal. Do you have Kelsey Fatigue? Now that everybody else has Kelsey Fatigue, my natural reaction is to be like, nah, it's great. Now, yeah. You're saying Kelsey. I will say though, he hasn't entered my life from a movie perspective, which is about to happen, right? It's going to be like an Adam Sandler movie. He's going to be, and I got to say, I do not listen to the podcast for him, man. Like he is going to be a super duper star for the rest of his life. Yeah. Super affable, of course, corny dude. That's just going to be a movie. Oh my god. I don't fault him for one step. Not one little bit. Yeah, you got to strike with the iron's heart because you don't know how long it's going to last. I mean, one player over the middle and you could be done. I mean, he is a Hall Famer though, too. Absolutely. It's really. Yeah. Boy, you throw it all into the middle there. Like, whose life would you rather have than Travis Kelsey's? Yeah. It's pretty good. Really sick. Yeah. Not too bad. But no, I, this is the first year and nobody cares about fantasy teams, but this is the first year I've ever had him in our family. I have him on my team and I just know he's going to wreak this year. I know this is going to be the year where it's like, he wasn't great last year. No, but this year he'll be even worse. And then the playoffs start. He'll be unbelievable again. And it'll just be like, wow, that was a bad graphic by your boy. Yeah. Kind of like the final years of Gronk playlist, right? Well, they wouldn't, they wouldn't bring him out of the garage until it was important game. So yeah, we'll see. There's a lot of NFL stuff I want to get to this hour, but I mean, you hit on the Chiefs thing. Yeah. Which is, it's just, it's stupid. Right? The, the career of Patrick Mahomes to this point that there's been two stumbling blocks. One was Tom Brady. Yes. Was it? That was basically it. And one Joe burrow game. Yeah. One, you can't just gloss over the Joe burrows. Yeah. That game. Yeah. Second half. It can gust. Like there's no explanation. Anybody, he got his revenge a couple of years ago beating him in an agency championship game. Right? But Joe burrow, like no offense Josh Allen, Joe burrows the guy that is going to challenge Patrick Mahomes in the AFC, I think, and no offense to the reigning MVP Lamar Jackson. No, I think we've seen that play out in the postseason. Much more in belief that Josh Allen will get him than Lamar Will. Like no question. Oh, yes. I thought you were going to say then Joe burrow. No, Joe burrow has literally already got him, but I do think that one of these years, the bills will get them. Like, well, you look back, I mean, we used to think that Brady was completely unfalable when it came to Manning and then Manning eventually got him. Right? Like it just, it happens. It happens. Like you play a football game so many times. The only thing that you just compared Josh Allen to Peyton Manning, but okay. I did. I did. I mean, Josh Allen's very good. Sure. My favorite player to watch in the league, probably. I love Josh Allen. But yeah, like the thing that scares me big time about the potential AFC championship game or divisional round game between the Chiefs and bills that feels inevitable again this year is this Xavier worthy thing. Yeah. Texas running or a wide receiver who is like the fastest man on live. He literally looks like Tyree kill, like he like the most I've seen a guy look like Tyree kill wearing that jersey, like the size everything like, Oh my God, they got Tyree kill again. But tortured things happen to tortured franchises and the fact that the bills traded that pick to the Kansas City Chiefs. I just can picture like, I mean, not to do my, you know, Tony Romo regimen. Oh, Jim Xavier, worthy. He's so fast. Jim and the AFC championship game is running all over them, having 110 yards to receiving touchdowns, absolutely killing them. And you just picture it's just another step. The Xavier worthy game, another step in the heartbreak of Buffalo Bills fans. I don't know why they did that. And it's just what tortured franchises do. I just, I have a very, my radar is up about that one. At least the bills have an incredible wide receiver room. Oh wait, no Curtis Samuels, his Samuels like wide receiver one for going into the season. I actually don't think that matters. I really don't. I think what didn't matter to Patrick Mahomes. That's what I mean. That's what you're saying. Josh Allen is. Well, no, but I like their tight ends. I like their running game. I like Josh Allen as a runner. I like, I actually do think it's a addition by subtraction is what I'm trying to say with not having digs and you know, and Gabe Davis, both those guys gone who I didn't think had very good years last year, Gabe Davis was great the year prior to that. But I just, I have a funny feeling with the bills that everybody's totally off the scent and that they're actually going to be really good. So you may get to that the next segment. Yeah, I was going to say you kind of stomped on my hottest NFL take. Oh, but it's the opposite of that. Is that the opposite of that? Is that the opposite of that? Is that the opposite of that? Is that the opposite of that? Is that the opposite of the audience? Is that the opposite of the audience? Is that the opposite of the audience? Is that the opposite of the audience? Is that the opposite of the audience? Uh, maybe, I don't want to talk about it. Okay, okay, okay. Do you want to do Malik neighbors here? The story broke yesterday, so giants with their six overall picks selected a wide receiver themselves. Malik neighbors. Yeah. Who's pretty undeniably unbelievable. Okay. Yeah. We'll see. I watched a lot of college football last year. I was really, really impressed with him. Okay. Um, so he's looking for a number up and down, a lot of retired numbers, a lot of numbers that were unavailable for him, eventually landing on the number one. Pretty good number. But also retired, not just retired, the first number in North American pro sports to ever be retired, a Hall of Fame giant, uh, defensive end Ray Flaherty, who retired. His number was retired in 1935. So we're not talking about a modern day athlete, but the, the, again, this whole retiring numbers things started with this guy. That's the number one, pretty amazing. So I have a couple of questions about this. The first is, so what is retiring a number mean then if we can just unretire it. It doesn't, I mean, clearly means nothing here, uh, and secondarily, like what is the thought pro? And apparently the Flaherty family has been on board with this and yada, yada, they got the sign off from everybody. Okay. That's good. So important. There are four player where this is possible, where you can just take it out of the Raptors and it becomes your number. Has this happened before? It must have happened before. It might. You know what? Bad job by me. Not doing research, but I feel like this has never happened before. No, it's definitely happened. And you know, the scenario that I can envision it having happened is you acquire like a guy that is going into the Hall of Fame, like in trade, you, you acquire a guy who wears a certain number and he's already established and it's like, maybe he's not like the captain to your team. Like that is your meal ticket coming into your franchise who wears a certain number. He gets the okay to continue wearing that. And then when he departs, it'll be re-retired, but that's different than somebody who we're just getting to know, right? And yeah, maybe he has a great career. I think he's gonna have a great career. Yeah, maybe, you know, there's some off fields. Who knows? I don't know about Malik neighbors. I have a couple thoughts on this. He wore eight at LSU, so it's like it's not even his number, first of all, I got me a little bit, you know, my radar was up on that one, but, you know, what was his, what was this guy's name? What was the guy's name? He was Ray Flaherty, the defensive end. I would love to see old Raisie line up with Malik neighbors. Brian, I'm not going to go so far. I think Malik neighbors going to cook them. That's why I say, hey, if you put Malik neighbors in that time. Malik neighbors is having his, he's the first number ever retired to. So I'll give you that point. Sure. No, no, no, not sure. They didn't even throw it forward in that time. They didn't even throw it forward. Honestly, you take an offensive lineman, plan wide receiver. I mean, they didn't, was that how prevalent was the forward pass in 1935, I don't think. His number was retired in 1935. Yes. So he played like in 1920. Yeah. So I am completely fine with this. I think it's, I think it's gutsy. I think it shows a level of confidence in yourself that your is pretty unprecedented. So we'll see. But yeah, I'm very, very interested in how it's going to go. Yeah. Put a lot of pressure on yourself early. Yeah. Because you have no equity in being a Giants fan. What if this was an all time Leafs number, like, I don't know. And some, like what if Syllap's number was unretired? Yeah. Okay. How would you feel about that? Fine. Don't care. Couldn't care less. Could not care less. Okay. Good night. Carless. All right. When we come back, we'll do our hottest NFL takes. As the fan morning show continues, Ben and Sam McKee Sports, that five round of the fan. Big opinions and in-depth conversations covering the Leafs, J's, Raptors and the NFL. The J.D. Bunken podcast. Subscribe and download the show on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, fan morning show Sports, that five, nine of the fan, Ben and Sam McKee. Yeah, we're having fun on a Friday on ahead of a long weekend and we're trying to resume the show in, in that, in that tone later on. But breaking news just in the, in the break. Unimaginable tragedy for the hockey community is Johnny Goudreau has tragically passed away at the age of 31 years of age. We have a statement from Gary Bettman. We have a statement from the Columbus Blue Jackets. I'll read you the statement from the commissioner right now. The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets for Johnny Goudreau and his brother Matthew, while Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and shows stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname Johnny Hockey. He was more than just a dazzling hockey player. He was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endured himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path. Goudreau often told the story of how his father taught him to skate as a child in his home state of New Jersey and he carried that same youthful passion throughout his 11 NHL seasons as a skilled playmaker. Goudreau participated in the NHL All-Star Game seven times where he was always a fan favorite, particularly while showcasing his talents in the various skills competitions for which he was so well suited. He will be remembered fondly in Calgary where he played his first nine seasons with the flames from 2013-14 to 2021-22, emerging as one of our league's brightest young stars while compiling the franchise's fifth highest career points total, his loss also will be felt profoundly in Columbus, the city in which he chose to settle his family and where he was one of the most respected veteran leaders of a club building towards the playoffs. Both Johnny and Matthew will be mourned at Boston College where they were teammates the year Johnny won the Hobie Baker Award in 2013-14 and at Gloucester Catholic High School in New Jersey were both played and where Matthew was the head hockey coach following his own five-year pro-playing career we send our most heartfelt condolences to his wife Meredith, their children, Noah and Johnny, his parents Guy and Jane, sisters Kristen and Katie and we give, we grieve alongside his teammates, members of the Blue Jackets and Flames organizations. His many friends in hockey and countless fans around the world for whom he created indelible memories on and off the ice is just like awful. Yeah, sorry, you're reading through that that's just, there's certain things that hit your newsfeed that you don't want to believe is true, there's things that you just, you can't even just unimaginable, I don't really know the details of what happened, we don't want to get into that, it's all unconfirmed stuff so we won't do that but I just have nothing really more to say other than just, you know, you can't get through this. No, like a family, you don't bounce back from this, like it's just, there's nothing that anyone could ever do or say to fix their family, to fix what's happened here, it's just, it's a truly unimaginable tragedy for that family and I can't even begin to think about what they're going through today, it's just, it's unimaginable buddy, I'm sorry. Yeah, no, of course, we're all sorry for anybody, the new Johnny Giorgio obviously is family and sports obviously, yeah, when stuff like this happens when people say, oh it gives you perspective, if you need this to give you perspective, that's not so, I have plenty of perspective but yeah, this is awful, it's horrible, there's a huge news story and this is obviously a player of significant note in the National Hockey League, huge superstar for the United States and was going to be part of that four nations face off in February, we don't know the specific details of what happened, I mean online, there's all kinds of different things that are being bandied about but yeah, just him and his brother, I mean there's a report that he was headed to his sister's wedding, like this weekend, yeah, it's just awful, awful, awful, awful stuff, we'll try and bring somebody on later on the program who can speak a little more directly about the Johnny, about his life and what he meant to, a couple of different franchises and what he meant to USA hockey and what he was like as a guy, I mean I just think about like anybody who's under six feet tall who has aspirations of playing in the National Hockey League and obviously the game has changed so much. - He was the guy you point to. - He was number one, the guy, the little water bug that was, you know, yeah, the fourth round pick, nothing ever handed to him that he was able to carve out an incredible, incredible career both in Calgary and Columbus, again, tragic news today is Johnny Goudreau passing away at the age of 31. - 31, Jesus. - Yeah, it's a horrible, awful, and yeah, we'll try and do a sports show in and around talking about Johnny Goudreau and there's no like easy way to do that. - Absolutely not. - But yeah, it is a sports show. So yeah, we're less than a week away from the start of the NFL season, right, and I can't wait for Thursday night and what a matchup we got, we got the defending MVP Lamar Jackson. At Arrow had to take on the Chiefs who were looking to become the first NFL franchise ever to win three consecutive Super Bowls and I mean if you are a Patrick Mahomes guy, that would be a pretty good piece of evidence to put it up against Tom Brady in the goat conversation. - Absolutely. - Especially with so much of his career yet to play out. This is the last chance I think we're going to get to talk about our hottest takes, although no, you're back next week. - Yeah. - So we could, you could change your take then. - Or we could just do fun story lines, I don't know, I don't know what you're going to do, but yeah, we can, we can, we can kick some stuff around here. - All right, so let's do our hottest NFL takes. Do you have one you want to start with? - Yeah, I do. It's that the New York Jets will be the AFC representative in the Super Bowl. - Oh my God. - Yeah. - So that's what I'm going with. I just, I feel like it's. - That's a zag. - No, I know. - Everyone's saying that they're, you know, the Rogers thing, they were, what were they last year? Were they seven and 10 last year? - I mean, they won week one in the Rogers game, right? - Yeah. - Against the Bills. - Yeah, it was an incredible game. - It was an overtime. - In overtime. - In overtime. - Yes. - I just, they got, they were really plucky and good with legitimately the worst quarterback play I think I've maybe ever seen with Zach Wilson and I don't even know who else was. Mike White involved, maybe not Trevor Simeon was involved. There was, there's a lot of jobbers involved and they were still seven and 10. That defense is elite. They're unbelievable. The, the, the Breeze Hall, having him fully healthy Garrett Wilson's the top 10 receiver in the league. You know, I just, I feel like everyone's kind of thinking that they're, you know, there's a drama, all this stuff and I'm not thinking like there definitely is some level of drama but they're, they're franchise MVP quarterback just didn't show up from many camps because he went to go visit the pyramids. - That's, that's, that's Aaron Rodgers. - He still has a chance to be really good in this league and I think they're going to be extremely good and I don't think anybody can win three Super Bowls in a row. It's literally never happened and I think that maybe they won't beat the Chiefs but the Chiefs will get beat by somebody and then they'll, they'll be the representative of the AFC in the Super Bowl. - How's that for you? - That was out of start. - That's, that's spicy. - Thank you. - Mine, I, I have a couple that are kind of like adjacent to that one but I'll, I'll stick with my AFC East hot take and it goes counter to everything you said about the Buffalo Bills. The era's over. It's done. - Wow. - The window's closed? - Yeah, it's closed. - Well, and part of it might be that Aaron Rodgers is no pushover in the Jets with no quarterback still 150% of the games against the Bills last season. The, the wide receiver room has been completely decimated, Milano's out before even the season starts. That happens like week three or something, but he's already out for, for the Bills. They're always off injured. The, the Dolphins, I mean the weapons that they have there, it's just, it's, they're so elite. - But then it gets cold and they suck. - Yeah. I mean, they're hung in there in a game and with Patrick, the Holmes helmet got destroyed. That was not a real football game. - They rolled over. - Now Bills are cook, cook, cook. Their best opportunity passed them by and 13 seconds left will be an all-time, and already is kind of an all-time memory in the minds of Bills fans. But yeah, even more so is the years, if the, as they get further and further away from that season. - That was their buy for our best team. - And how great that Bills team has been in years previous, no, it's over. Um, yeah, there's only a couple of guys in the AFC that have a chance to get back to my Holmes. - I couldn't disagree more. - And it's, it's not Joe, it's not Josh Allen this year. - That's crazy. Josh Allen is still Josh Allen. You have the one of the best players in the NFL and teams have gotten by, like down years that it was a down year for the Chiefs last year, like they were not good in the regular season. They still find a way to get into the playoffs. And they have one of the best players in the league in Patrick, my Holmes, and there's a reason they won the Super Bowl. I still think that the infrastructure of having, of having Josh Allen is enough. And people are sleeping on them. So I think they'll be in the playoffs again. But I don't think the air is over. - How old? - Not over. - How old is Josh Allen? - That is a hot thing. - It's a hot thing. - Done, done. Okay. - All right. You got another one? - Yeah. And this is a pretty warm one. And this is all, this is just a pure zag, pure zag. I think the, the Texans are going to misplace. There's just too much buzz. There's too much smoke. There's too much stuff being, there's people picking them to go to the Super Bowl. There's people picking them to be one of the best teams in the league. And last year was a lot of house money and foul money and no one was expecting it. And I think CJ Surrout is really good and I think he's going to have an excellent career. But the Stefan Diggs thing, he's going to be yelling at him on the sidelines. It's going to be bad vibes. I just, the sophomore slump thing in the back of my mind, you got the target on your back. Everybody thinks that, you know, every news, sorry, any ESPN show, every show in the States talking about how he's, he's maybe the one of the best guys in the league now, but she may be. I just feel like they've had way too much smoke blown up their butt and that they're going to have a stumble here and that that division doesn't suck, right? Like I think the Colts are plucky. I think I think Trevor Lawrence, is it due for a bounce back here? It's like released all their draft picks from like two years ago. That's tough. That's a tough one in the NFL. You can't really be missing on pits like that. And yeah, I just think that that division is going to be like, even the Titans, like I think they're plucky too. So I have a feeling that it's going to be an underwhelming year for the Texans. And I think they're going to miss the playoffs. So there you go. How's that for a hot one? That's a good one. Thank you. I like that. I mean, one week is it the first time we see Stefan Diggs with some outward one. No, it can't be week one. Yes. Before it starts just dictulating towards CJ's route one, buddy who's already barking him in the preseason. Yeah. I've got the preseason, man. Okay. I've got this guy's a problem. I've got two more. I'm going to choose one of these. You know what? I'll stick. We've talked so much about the Chiefs. Okay. And I'll I'll go out on a limb on this one. Chiefs are not going to win the AFC West for the first time since 2015 because the chargers actually have an adult in the room. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Love this one. Let's take you back to the first couple of years of Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco NFC Championship game, Super Bowl NFC Championship game that's the first three seasons in San Francisco. He's immediately with it. Oh my God. And it's like one year. It was like, I think there were 500 news like, yeah, thanks. But no, thanks. I'll take the money. I'll go run Michigan and they'll steal the signs and whatever I'll turn them into a perennial contender. Yeah. He does this. He knows what to do. It's this is a ready made winner for him. He has a quarterback. He has the weapons. All that team has needed. I mean, just go back the last decade and look at the like Anthony Lynn and oh my God. They've just been disaster after. Oh, it was brutal. Just disaster after disaster after disaster standing on the sideline. And yeah, Jim Harbaugh's weird and he wears the khakis and he's very animated, but he's damn good. I love him. I love him. He's undeniable. He is like he just, you know, anytime I hear him speak, I've just that guy is born to be an NFL football coach or a football coach in general and he's I think that's a really good pick. Yeah, like it's not like they have no talent, no, like they have Justin Herbert who's looked upon as one of the best quarterbacks in the league and you know, they're going to focus on the running game and it's going to be they drafted that mutant Joe all the offensive lineman. So I like that pick a lot and I actually think that has a, you know, that's a chance to be correct. Oh, is that not it? Not hot enough for this segment? I think it's hot. Okay. I think it's hot. My next one is not. Maybe hot. Enough. Do you want to do it? We have time quickly. Uh, you know what? Why don't you save it for later? Okay. I will save it because we have to do now. Time now for the waking rake presented by sports interaction, your homegrown sports book 19 plus bet responsibly, Blue Jays road trip continues. They're in Minnesota to play the twins where there will be plenty of Canadian baseball fans who would figure making the trip across the border. Kevin Gossman getting the start against Pablo Lopez. Moneyline has the Blue Jays as the underdogs. There are plus 125 twins minus one 41 as they battle in that American League central to get into the playoffs. Total is eight in this baseball game. Do you have a lean in this one? Yeah. Twins recently, haven't they? Yeah. They've been losing a bunch of games. I think the Jays are going in there. I love them as an underdog. Kevin Gossman's done good recently. Give me the, give me the Jays as an underdog. Love that line, actually. Yeah. I love it as well. I might even know, yeah, the money line is plus one 25. If you're, if you're a coward about it, Blue Jays plus a run and a half minus one 75 Blue Jays playing good baseball right now, are they ever that was the waken rake presented by sports interaction, your homegrown sports book 19 plus bet responsibly. When we come back, Jeff Blair of Blair and Barker is the fan morning show, continues bad anti-samiki sports net five nine in the van.
