out it's a special N. F. L. preview today. We're taking a look at the league and you know to be fair I just got back from a almost week long trip to London to cover all elite wrestling all in. So I'm a little bit off on the. The breaking news on the national football league but I know we're coming up to crunch time. And figure who better to have on we have on Ian Valin Geno from NFL draft study in. Thirty thirteen breaking down what's going on in the national football league and we're welcoming back in for the football season. Our cohost for football coverage here on the fired up network let's get the logo off there quick Alex Campbell Alex good to see you again good to talk to you as we are gearing up for the N. F. L. season. Great to be welcome back in here. And I just wanted to start. Yeah a couple of easy questions as we kick it off. Gonna come back and what we'll be breaking down the NFL on a weekly basis here on the fired up network. It's definitely getting into football time and football time is when sports talk is that it's fast. I wanted to ask you guys just to start out. What NFL team. Do you feel has stepped back the most from last year who's going to take the biggest step back from where they finished last season. But Ian I'll let you. Go ahead yeah so first off thanks for having me back on I appreciate it always look forward to chatting with you guys and yeah that's a great question now I think. You look at a couple A. F. C. contenders there I think you could look at Buffalo I think there's a lot of skepticism about where they're at I think even their fan base kind of expects a step back this year it's hard with you know Josh Allen and I think. She's fans have experienced that with my homes to where I don't know that last year I mean you hope for a Super Bowl but like I think as an outsider there was maybe the view of saying well I don't know if they can win at all I mean we lost X Y and Z. You know our receiving units this and Buffalo's kind of in the same spot like they're looking like Kansas City a year ago without the pedigree without the coaching you know the elite proven coach right so they're not one to one but you look at Buffalo and you say well they got the same questions that receiver defenses overhauling the entire unit. Strangely the head coach is under Sean McDermott some people think he could be fired after this year I think that's a little odd I think he's a really great coach that just hasn't gotten over the hump and that's that's the NFL. I mean so so I look at Buffalo a little bit they're going to be in the mix because they have Josh Allen but if you told me that they didn't make the playoffs because the AFC East is loaded I wouldn't be shocked I think they'll be a dangerous team and I look at Baltimore I think Baltimore they're going to be in the mix they probably make the playoffs but you know the 13 games they won last year does that or does that roster look like a 13 win team this year I don't think so that they're receiving unit it's still bad their acquisitions didn't make a lot of sense you know the offensive line looks worse I love Derek Henry I think he'll be really good there but it's still about their upside they're going to win by running the ball Lamar is great no doubt about it but the defense got worse they lost Patrick Queen the secondary they didn't add a whole lot there I think as far as proven talent so I look at them like McDonald obviously losing might be the biggest loss that any team and NFL had last year going to the the Seahawks so I think the AFC at the top might have gotten a little bit weaker even though there's some teams out there that might have gotten healthier and maybe look a little bit better on paper than when they were a year ago but to lose maybe the two strongest competitors to the Chiefs and to say those are good teams but not great teams now I think really hurts the AFC's quality I'll take that and noted I mean obviously the bills did make one major position they added Mark has Valdez Scanlan as a wide receiver and you know how could you trade MVS for Stefan Diggs and not feel like he got better I mean they saved a bunch of money they got an asset for it it was a no brainer trade they might get you over the year for that you're running MVS out there as a starting receiver that's that's not good he's done he's cut Alex is your team that's taking the biggest step back yeah my team is taking the biggest step back is a team that last year I think took on I don't want to say like you know surprising step forward given that they're very veteran late in everything like that and they have you know what a lot of people see is a great quarterback but you know for me it's the Cowboys I expect the Cowboys to take a pretty big step back this year for a lot of reasons one being I think that year from Dak was complete outlier you know just just throwing that out there to they are they are completely devoid in the running back room you combine that with the fact that Dak is something like eight and 18 when he's got to throw the ball more than 40 times in a game the Cowboys are simply better when they run the ball that O line is better when they run the ball which is also a year older they've done nothing to improve an aging roster I know they just signed CD lamp to a big contract and and and locked him down I think that's very important he's obviously I think a top five receiver in the league right now and he's an explosive player I expect him to put up big numbers again this year but I think the spotlight is going to be on my card because I do think the Cowboys are going to struggle and probably struggle out of the gate I honestly think that they're going to have this shock of their league also in the division that's going to outclass them in the Washington commanders I think they're actually going to finish third in that division I've got Washington finishing two and the Eagles finishing one that's a big move and they do kind of tie together too because how much did we spend last year talking about oh man somebody's going to hire Dan when he's going to be a head coach somebody's going to hire him well that somebody turned out to be the commanders he leaves Dallas and now you have your two coaches probably sitting on the hottest seats in the league so far as we had into the regular season I mean McCarthy and Dallas and McDermott in Buffalo yeah and what did what did Jerry Jones say when he when the question was asked why hasn't he extended McCarthy and he had one answer what was it Green Bay that green Bay game was embarrassing for the Cowboys it's embarrassing and I think that sticks in Jones mind and I when they struggle out of the gate this year I think that shines even brighter well and now the attention is going to go on and you can obviously you can throw up Baltimore in this mix as well when you lose a coordinator that was such a key part of the team success and a person that was hailed as being a major part of the success that's a change I mean you're going to see an a Tampa Bay as well Tampa now their offensive coordinator guy credited with turning around Baker Mayfield going to be in Carolina and I don't know Ian is there anything that you can salvage from Bryce Young I think so I think coming out of Alabama I thought he'd be more like a point guard and I didn't necessarily see what some of the analysts saw I think a lot of people were very high on him because of his leadership and because of his accuracy you know you love the leadership right but the leadership only gets you so far if you don't have the on field talent then it's not gonna matter you'll stick around a while as a backup and and that's a great career but not for the number one pick and so I think he's talented enough you want to see some more of the creative plays we saw a little bit of it in the preseason and some of that's going to be better offensive line better offensive scheme better playmakers around him he doesn't have a whole lot of play-making around him so I'm a little bit worried still about that receiving core but the running-back room looks a little bit better once Jonathan Brooks gets back the offensive line should be a little bit better they made some big investments there the offensive system should be a whole lot better so I think there's enough there to at least get him through probably his rookie contract and then you make that decision I've just never really been a believer of young I think he's a good player I don't think he's got like that top-level arm I don't think he's got he's obviously very small he's quick yeah but he's not Kyle or Murray right like he doesn't have the powerful arm even for a short frame he doesn't have the explosive downfield passing ability to hit those tight windows and so unless if that changes which it could we're talking about twenty one twenty two-year-old guys so things could improve a little bit but I don't really see it as far as him being a top ten quarterback so they'll be improvement but I still think we're gonna be left wanting more and some of that's on Carolina to get him there but then that's also some of I think we'll see young's limitations even as they get better around him well here let me ask you this not then throw it out to Alex as well Dave Kanellis he gets there he was credited with helping Baker Mayfield get his footing back in and actually got Baker Mayfield a 90 million dollar contract Baker Mayfield's a significantly more physically talented quarterback than bright shot right yeah he is and he also had Mike Evans and so having Mike Evans who is a perfect fit for Baker Mayfield that's part of it you had the receiver with the right skill set to maximize the quarterback and Mike Evans went crazy last year I think any doubts that Mike Evans is on his way out of the league you know I think we're throwing out the window so credit to Baker because he was dead in the water and we saw it in Carolina this career was basically over so credit for Baker to come back a little bit too but yeah he's a little bit more accurate he's more gutsy hopefully Bryce can get there I think there is a maybe a pathway for Bryce to look at Baker's game and say I see we're another short quarterback that didn't have the most powerful arm maybe found ways to succeed and obviously Bryce has a lot of other skills too but if I can play point guard and then take my occasional calculated shot and reduce the turnovers reduce the sacks those are normal young player things there's at least way forward to say hey you know maybe he can get a hundred million dollar contract that bar has changed a little bit what that means you're still you still might be in purgatory with a hundred million dollar quarterback but for his own sake and bank account I don't think he'll complain well Alex here we talked about it a lot when we were breaking down college football you get to a certain level of a college program it's a different ball game because you're out talented in your opponents everybody's high school wide open you have four or five receivers that are two or three yards open on most passing plays you're gonna look pretty damn good as a quarterback that was Bryce Young's reality at Alabama I mean you know like you said he could distribute the ball because everybody was open you just take your pick throw to whoever you want to NFL that doesn't happen the guys who can get their arm out and have an arm's length on the defensive back are wide open yeah he's benefiting too from Bill O'Brien too and you get an NFL former NFL coach you know as a college coordinator which is pretty crazy and say what you will about O'Brien I've been critical of him as an NFL head coach but he's still accomplished he saw what you do with the shot Watson he's not not bad certainly not bad bad coordinator in college what do you think Alex says yeah I mean Carolina yeah I don't think ultimately there is hope in Carolina and I know I did this several times last year a lot of it comes down to ownership and Tepper and his his his just incredible hastyness and trying to make a champion out of a roster that is nothing close and I fear I fear that those those kinds of rash decisions like terminating the coach way too early last year you know what this team is going to still struggle and I think I think that as you know Joe we went over time and again ownership has a direct link on on wins and losses and how teams finish in division races all you have to do is look at the fact that in a salary cap era most every successful team is still a successful team the best franchises are the best franchises and now we're in this mega billionaire class of owners that I believe have high expectations that are used to getting things as soon as and as quickly as they want and now they're demanding of their football teams and they don't understand the process I need to go back to the Cowboys that I talked about just a minute ago recently you have Jerry Jones saying that there is literally not a better person on the planet to be the Cowboys GM than Jerry Jones and Jones by the way is not even quite close to as antsy or or not football understanding as some of these owners like Tepper so I think that Carolina is doomed because of their ownership and so is the career of Bryce Young it apart and parcel and I agree with everything that Ian laid out as well as far as as far as his potential upside but the roster simply hasn't approved enough fast enough for either Young or again the owner so I just don't I don't see it going well yeah I mean and to a degree there's only so much that you can do but you know I do want to give the billionaire owners a little bit of a pass though because the era of building up a team for four or five years to make your run that's gone I mean it's becoming gone in Major League Baseball but in the NFL it's absolutely gone you can I would say over in three years I would say baseball is the easiest sport to go from first to last in a division year to year football is becoming I think a little harder and I think it's I kind of disagree I think it's because because because teams are starting to build the right way they're going back to a 90s but look at that what the Lions have done and how they built from the inside out I think the best teams are doing that if you look around the league especially in a time of an offensive line shortage I mean look at the Chiefs like you look at how the Chiefs pay their roster right now it is literally every key position is is the one paid and everyone else is on a rookie deal and so and that is that is the status quo if you're you want to win it's it's basically building the trenches first that's why I don't get super excited about you know wide receiver acquisitions for instance well if you don't have quarterback the wide receivers meaningless because I mean we've seen if you have an average quarterback you're probably going to be a pretty bad team yeah yeah well that's the most important because I kind of you know that's what that's a lot of college coaches adage right you know where if you have a quarterback you have a chance you know and and I think that's that's that's true that's universally true in the sport of football yeah and if you don't know the quarterback you better have a really good offensive line yeah just the least everything else has to be correct chance yeah the days of being an okay okay game manager and having a top three defense and winning a Super Bowl are gone and I actually in return to your point about McDermott being on the hot seat it's because he's a defensive coach in an offensive era the ground has moved underneath his feet he can't keep up at the times and the Allen is only truly successful when he has a really competent coordinator other than that they just you know really what we're seeing in Josh Allen is what the Bears did to Justin Fields early on his career just here's the ball kid go win it for us and you know it's basically backyard football with less and less tools because your salary is eating up more and more of the cap and chasing the best players out of town yeah I mean you know you rent how can you get nine points in one on digs for MVS yeah yeah yeah can't that's that's not a fair trade-off no well especially then when they trade worthy to to Kansas City it's it is interesting you know I think that there is like an increased pressure on those defensive coaches when you got that situation and you think it'd be like Houston so I think the way Houston played it was smart was they said and I know it's a little bit different because they have a rookie quarterback contract but they have a defensive head coach they make all the investments on offense they say we're going to trust our defensive coach and again franchises are in two different spots but we're going to trust our defensive head coach to make the most of a good talent base but Houston's defense isn't special you know I think getting Daniel Hunter was a great move but there's not a lot of guys on that unit that you're saying our pro bowl level or better so I think you know they made the huge investments even with Joe mix in even you know with the digs and extending the receivers you're not seeing that Buffalo and I know some of that's convoluted because of the von Miller deal and stuff like that but still you didn't see Buffalo go out and say we're going to make shrewd underneath the radar signings or flyers we're going to take on MVS which makes no sense we're not going to add to our backfield James Cook is great but you need number two offensive line it's okay you know Joe Brady I like but like he's not approving OC you didn't go get a guy that's you know like Todd Monkin you didn't get like a top-level OC so what you just broke down you can you can pretty much apply to any of the bills last three four years or any years without Dave all is the offensive coordinator basically you could say the same thing leading into the season it's basically true you've struggled to put a running the game together consistently you struggle to rebuild an offensive line that again solid franchises rebuild offensive the Chiefs did it overnight you know I mean it offensive line that Chiefs did it over the Jets are actually making an effort at doing it now we'll see if that's successful you know what I mean but when you struggle you struggle in the trenches you look at the Patriots and how right now they're struggling in the trenches they've got a they've got a good rookie quarterback that you know the fan base is screaming to have something to cling on to the with a talentless roster and they are unwilling Brissette will be the starter because the O line will not be able to sustain a rookie quarterback yeah they're doing going up Patriots is odd that they hoarded their picks instead of moving up for Sua Mataya guy that made so much sense for them to take just instead of Jalen Polk which I like Jalen Polk but like you took you know a receiver over a tackle when you desperately need two tackles yeah I mean it it burns me up it's like the foundation of a football team is not that hard you know getting certain players is identifying them can be but you better have that quarterback it okay they take the quarterback you better have tackles you can't just pass on the tackles and I think that's just a massive failure and and it's funny because it's almost like people look at the Chiefs and it's like some of that has just been they've done a lot of amazing things don't get me wrong but some of their team building has just been hey let's stick to the basics right let's build what we know works it's a simple process it's just it's just hard to get that guy a quarterback right but it's a simple process right you talked about the Texans and how they're in it on a different training in a different direction than say the bills and it's because they have a quarterback on a rookie contract that they really believe in and so now you see them go out in this offseason and they acquired Daniel Hunter they get the receiver for him and you know what I mean and now now they're really going for it and and that's you know that there's so here's the honeymoon window but on the other side of that if he goes and wins you a Super Bowl now it's going to collapse into what we see with what Mahomes is dealing with what we saw Brady mitigate for so long where the roster gets kind of choked down and and distilled into the most important positions get paid and everyone else gets recycled and the best can still make that work and win Super Bowl so that's what Mahomes did last year and it's you know it'll be interesting to see if you know Stroud can go to go that far you know what I mean but but yeah that's that's that's the get and so it's really not that complex what's complex is landing the guy in the first place oh absolutely and you know we're going to see it with the Niners because a lot of talk with the Niners has been they're running out of their period where they're playing with house money they're going to have to pay Brock Purdy here soon and then you won't be able to have the highest paid roster across the other positions and the question for me is do they pay Brock Purdy well I mean Brock Purdy in the preseason with a lot of a lot less talent around him does not look quite the same I've been I've been pretty supportive of Brock Purdy but I wouldn't be shocked if they at least push that to the last minute yeah you wonder like that first team is gonna actually call the bluff and some people thought it might have been Miami with Tua and you know and I actually thought hey it might actually make some sense if they had a chance of getting someone like bonyx or one of these rookie quarterbacks and we didn't know how early those guys would go yeah I'm not saying that you know Bo's gonna be great or anything like that but if you've got a savant head coach is there a point where you think hey I've got a good not great starting quarterback I don't want to pay that dude fifty sixty million bucks a year let's just reuse that money we can go get a rookie he'll be fine you know I think to a and I'm pretty are probably above average but you know neither's elite that's definitely the case neither am's top five outside of their scheme and system there's no doubt about that so I wonder and if there's gonna be a guy to do it chanahan might be the guy because he is there very seems like they're very safe they should be pretty safe with their position but yeah you've got Trent Williams 36 asking for more guaranteed money deservedly so but what do you do you got Brandon IU who wants to be paid as a top receiver he'll never be a top receiver in San Francisco because it's not how their offense operates and they've already paid other guys so it makes it very complex and chanahan loves loves versatile players and debos and absolute Swiss army knife so you are not getting wide receiver one over him it is not happening and so and and I don't and by the way I don't think Brandon IU is a wide receiver one in the league and that and that I think was the problem with dealing him as teams would have had to settle up to a wide receiver one money contract and and so he's like well I only want to go where I want to go and also I want to get paid like a one and like well you're not a one and you can't dictate that kind of market so that's why he is where he is now and and I think it's gonna kind of stay there and you know you're right if you look at last year when they struggled is when they had debo out and when they had Trent Williams out and when they had CMC out and I think ultimately the Niners in general are two CMC dependent a lot like we talked about here's the ball with Alan it's I think it's a lot the same with the Niners and CMC in fact I think it's one of the shocking things I kind of mapped out all the conferences and I think one of the in the divisions I think one of the shocking things I have is the Niners finishing second still getting into the playoffs but second in the NFC West behind the Rams. Well I think the Rams Matt Stafford if he's healthy he has more game winning ability obviously then a Brock party he can put the TM in his shoulders he can carry them to a win pretty can't do that he needs all the pieces around him everything needs to be running he needs that high performance car filled with premium then he can drive it if you take Brock party and you put him in a Chevy Malibu and he's losing because he can't lift the level up and it's just kind of interesting and Rams will be interesting too because they're replacing both coordinators. Yeah I mean now granted Sean McVay has done it multiple times he's already proven he's the guy he's would be there you know as long as he wants to be but I'm with you I like the Rams to that I mean the way that they've remade their roster over the last two years is not talked about nearly enough unbelievable how under the radar how they look dead in the water everyone looks like they're gonna retire well you hit on one rookie class and then you have a pretty good offseason this year and hopefully Cooper Cup stays healthy and that team looks a lot more dangerous yeah absolutely and has there a trade that's looked better in reflection for both teams than the Detroit and LA LA trade I mean just for both teams it's it's just been sensational not only what you said about the new players but having a quarterback like Stafford that can can can I mean they say the term make all the throws gets used too much because like not many even NFL quarterbacks really can Stafford can I mean and and has consistently been able to make all the throws his entire career and I don't think a guy like Puke Nakua comes comes out of the woodwork quite like he did last year unless you've got an absolute gunslinger type quarterback like Stafford you can even even have a great quarterback that's not going to expose that kind of talent as quickly as he did no because Stafford is willing to gun the ball out there and you have a coach that's willing to utilize all those pieces to I mean Nakua easily could have just been buried on the bench because well hey we got to start the veteran and we just don't plan yeah and that's the thing about McVays you know wide zone scheme is that it's it just fits so many it's it's like a it's like a puzzle that can adapt to any piece you want to put in there they can use so many different offensive pieces and they can move Stafford even even when they have to shift offensive linemen around they can kind of hide him with the way that they really move him around the pocket I mean that and that's part of a lot of McVays geniuses is is right there and and how and exactly how how they shift protection and how the how they use that play action game and you know really play that offense well let me let me ask you guys about a team that you know right here in Kansas City I got them on the background of the monitor they didn't make a lot of signings during the offseason but they did work on the one glaring weakness of last year's team wide receiver and just yesterday they officially brought back let's see here he is get him in there areas Juju Smith Schuster back on the team how do you feel about the Chiefs the work they put in at adding some strength in wide receiver they'll get Hollywood Brownback probably week two you got Juju Smith Schuster you got Xavier worthy is that enough to put the Chiefs offense back where you expected to be with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid and what do you think I think it gets closer to it's not going to be ever what it was I think with Tyree kill and there's several reasons to that one Tyree kills can be a Hallfamer I mean sure you just not going to replace a guy like that especially with his skillset but so it may not be an offense like that but that you're going to get closer to an offense that blends the boat best of both worlds you're going to actually have some verticality you're going to have a little bit better consistency even with Hollywood Brown he's not the most consistent catch rate guy he's a little bit more of a possession guy as far as his career usage or compared to what you'd expect for his frame and size and everything we thought out of Oklahoma he just hasn't been that guy and that's okay he's good in the role that he does and he provides occasional chon plays I think that'll actually improve this year probably a little bit less volume a little bit more efficiency for him will be great so I think it's a healthy situation for both him and the Chiefs worthy I think he'll be a little bit of a work in progress as far as his consistency as well you think he plays so fast that he plays too fast sometimes and that's kind of where Tyree has mastered himself and learned his body to be able to be an elite route runner it's going to take time for worthy to get there but in the meantime you're playing with house money because those are targets that were going to Skymore and Kadary's Tony and other guys that just could not do that much last year right I mean you know were these bar to be competitive and be a contributor is not overly high so that's going to help him it's going to reduce a little bit of the pressure on him and Juju you know physically might have been done for the last 18 months his body I think is telling him hey you know that we've had some stuff go wrong but if you're going to make it work it's as a bigger slot or more physical slot presence it's as a going back to a team that already knows your strengths and weaknesses already had compensated for a lot of those weaknesses on a Super Bowl run so I think it's the right fit and you look at the available talent the available talent out there wasn't you're not going to go and get someone that's a better physical athlete with technical ability with the ability to compete right now and be able to contribute from a playbook standpoint so it makes sense it's a low-cost move look if you could go get Devontae Adams of course you'd rather have Devontae Adams it just sure this is what you're working with at this point in the season I think it's still an upgrade it's an upgrade over guys that you had at the end of the roster it allows you to get rid of Cadarias Tony and move the book on him it allows you to say sky more you can be a special teamer we'll we'll rotate you in but now it's not one of those situations where we're going to live in dive with sky more as our you know third fourth fish fifth option while we wait for the rishi rice situation and some of these guys to get back healthy yeah well they did get a break because I think rishi rice is going to play this whole season and then you'll see whatever suspension comms will come before next season because thanks to Jerry Jones attorney they're going to continue it till doomsday I mean it's just yeah that's a that's a nice break yeah yeah and hey Alex up here we talked a lot about Cadarias Tony and the misadventures of Cadarias Tony does anybody else pick them up the guy was a first round draft pick by the New York football Giants has flamed out in spectacular fashion from two teams somebody give him another shot to get a third shot I would guess somebody signs him and then may release him a short time after it's it's one of those kind of scenarios I we talked about this a lot last year about how you know the the bottom of the running back you know financially like that that that room fell out right last year I mean we saw kind of the money fall out of that like and I think the reason is obvious it's because you can get a quality running back in the third fourth fifth sixth round of the draft that could show up and run for a thousand yards and by the way even if he does you're less likely to win a Super Bowl with a thousand yard rusher than you are without one so have fun it's just yeah I think I think pretty much wide receiver that's not an elite wide receiver is also kind of trending in that same direction and people aren't talking about it because there are elite wide receivers that are lifting up you know the tie that rises all boats and so it's it's it's it's it we goes out to some average that all the wider receivers are making but the reality is that the the bottom of the roster wide receivers like Tony are being churned and burned and it's not in the era where they're getting held on to like we saw 10 15 years ago just because you've got some upside kid and you're going to hang around here for the NFL minimum there's I don't think there's as much toleration for that it because it's the same case you can get these guys in the third fourth fifth sixth seventh round of the draft yeah it stars and jags more and more and that's something that I think the players association may want to take a look at because it's becoming glaringly obvious okay if you're a superstar hey we'll figure it out we'll pay you we'll backload a contract we'll do some restructuring we'll give you a workout bonus if you're just a guy okay well you're just a guy you're gone and we'll grab somebody else ask her of smith jr you know it's it's becoming more and more special tight end but gone it's becoming more and more like the NBA as far as the contracts are concerned the difference is they don't have the same structure in their collective bargaining agreement so there's a lot less flexibility like in the NBA you just you know write the you know write the scenario they can make it happen i mean there's there's no limit to the roster flexibility it's it's it's trending in that direction but again we talked about earlier like the quarterbacks are making so much money i wouldn't be shocked if someday they look at two separate salary caps uh one for the quarterbacks and one for the rest of the team yeah i like that and uh and i have asked a few people do you think the nfl is going to go to more of a major league soccer type salary cap structure in mls soccer they have three designated players they don't count against the cap and then the cap covers the rest of the team i mean nfl i think that would be a natural way to go yeah i could i could see it and you know i know there's been talk about that as the salaries at balloon but we're going to hit a point where these tv deals you know the numbers are going to keep growing but i think there might be a point of like disparity where it's saying all right with the rookie salary cap the way that it is there's already that huge gap and it needed to be reformed because you had guys you look back at the detroit lions after they took staff for sue and calvin johnson those guys each were top five salaries their positions the three most expensive positions of football and they were immediately as ricki's top paid you couldn't have that but now it's swung so far the other way to say you're really not paying a lot of veterans a second contract that's worth anything unless if uh it's someone that's really worth you know a multi-year investment so i think there is that growing disparity and you're seeing these quarterbacks going get into a point where you know sixty-seventy million dollars a year and everyone else is half that and less and so i do think there's going to be almost you almost have to break it off i think at least for the quarterback position i know the n_b_a_s talked about doing like a designated player um and i don't know that that'll ever happen in b_a_ for its own reasons but uh at least in the n_f_l_ i do think that there might have to come a point where you know the numbers not going to keep growing and so the salaries are either going to have to stagnate you i think we saw us in the n_h_l_ a few you know a while back when they made the disastrous decision to leave espn their cap situation was pretty tough for a while and so i think you know the n_f_l_ is going to continue to grow but i don't think it's going to continue to grow at this rate um year over year and so i do think there's like something to that which maybe it's half of that cost or something you know especially if they continue to be guaranteed like the de shawn watson deal if that continues to be kind of the formula moving forward you know i don't think these teams want to keep giving out five-year guaranteed deals no i mean it's it's the inflation of the quarterback market you look at how much money like cousins received for instance and i'm not saying that like you know a veteran that can that can stabilize a franchise and i really like the direction that lana's gone i even like the penics you know pick up and everything like that and you know i i i'm really high on the lana but you know that said that's a huge contract for a very very veteran quarterback uh that there's no assurance that he'll even um you know play up to what he was you know a couple years ago in in minnesota based on east coming back off an entry right now when you paid him gillies i mean come on i mean it's you know and you got the kid pushing them i mean it there you could paint a scenario where cousins is holding you know of no longer a clipboard a surface pro here and the next 18 months where he's making you know 45 50 million dollars while doing it hack yeah i mean that scenario in the next four yeah you might yeah yeah you might get a situation where he's traded offs in the off season because you just if he's not the guy that he was looked back five to seven years ago when ryan tana hill hit free agency from the dolphins and i'm not saying he was quite at the level where cousins was but look at the deal that he got it wasn't like one year seven million bucks that was the going rate for someone that was coming off of a season where he got hurt and you had to prove it and now your prove it deal is what 40 million bucks a year 45 million dollars a year 100 million guaranteed that's crazy absolutely insane and i'm with you i like what the alkins are doing but i don't know how do you think you don't as path you think it's because the falcon thought hey we're there the thing that's killed us is we didn't have the quarterback he's not you know rital is not the guy we need somebody else so we can put in there and now this guy can play and then they double down on it by drafting Phoenix junior too yeah yeah i think they feel like they hit home runs with um you know with the running back and and and the and the tight end there and and i and i feel like they want to maximize those rookie deals with a quarterback that can service those playmakers and i really i think they have one of the most underrated offensive lines in the league and i think that's where a lot of it a lot of the how i'm high on a line of Atlanta stems from in in you're exactly right they they looked and saw look we're so close to making the playoffs with ritter i know we can get to the playoffs with cousins and then if you have the chance to get a guy like penics when they did i'm i'm all for it i think penics is one of the more pro ready quarterbacks in the draft i think him and nix what were basically my two most pro ready ones and so i thought i thought that was a great you know a great pickup and i you know and then to get judon and and see that's what they were criticized for in the draft was why would you take a quarterback when you when you're so needy at edge rusher and you've had missed that position for two three seasons well here's why because if you think about this for a second if you have the chance to get a franchise quarterback for the next decade i mean penics really could be that now he might not be but he could be you can't find those two weeks a three weeks a month before the season starts but you can trade for a veteran edge rusher like judon and they did and that's why so you take the quarterback when you can and you'll pick up the safety or the edge rusher down the road even though that the edge rusher is important it's not it's not as important as the quarterback yeah that they weren't a rookie edge rusher away from no from making the playoffs and you know we'll see on the penics part you know i i'm with you though and i think that the way that they did the cousins deal kind of set them up for success i think people are looking at uh this deal and saying you know penics can be on the bench for three plus years i think cousins is there for a year i really do i i don't the deal is made for him to move you've got teams like potentially the the cowboys potentially the browns or raiders all these teams could use quarterbacks it will be easy as pie for them to move kurt cousins and not have to deal with a major issue worst case if he comes back and gets hurt they could still probably move them and attach a mid-round pick and get someone to take them so yeah i don't think that the risk there was that big of a deal it's not like they passed on miles Garrett uh you know to you know to take penics they Dallas Turner's fine he'll be a fine number two rusher for the in you know the next seven years it's not that big a deal let me ask you we've mentioned it in passing there how about the Las Vegas raids they had the chance to take a quarterback to go to trade it up to get literally whoever they wanted to rally instead they took powers they're going to go double tight end is their base offense and they're running out government shoe can they win with government shoe and two tight ends they might try to win ugly what do you yeah yeah they are they're going to try to win ugly and it's weird though the quarterback position for them is it's been such a strange saga for years i mean even the last year 2023 why didn't you trade up why didn't you move up why didn't you you know be more aggressive at some point you gotta just put your foot in the dirt and say i'm moving heaven and earth and we're gonna get somebody i don't care if we you know if we like these four or five guys we're just gonna make it happen we're gonna trade our assets move Devontae Adams like if you need a day two pick to make it happen just trade you know you got a 32 or 32 year old receiver who i love that several teams would surely give you a day two pick four just move them and reset you know set this thing up to restart instead they take you know Tyree Wilson who you know not anything in the NFL right now and he's he seems like a mile away they released their third round pick from last year by our young today you know it's a mess it's an absolute mess they're going to be a team that i think is kind of interesting to watch just from a schematic standpoint like i love the tight ends that brings me back you know 10 15 years and i love that but you let josh jacobs go and i like zimir white but zimir white's not you know he's going to be a system guy he's not someone that's going to bring the house down based on his own talent so you let your super talented back go well that's part of the two tight end you know shtick you got to have a really good run game so yeah it's just it's just kind of a bizarre strategy i know they're transitioning right like it's going to take a year or two but to not get the running back or i'm sorry not to get to not get the quarterback and then to let your running back go it just it's counterintuitive they might be you know having the number one pick next year yeah i i think that's that's highly likely i for for a lot of the same reasons i mean i know uh i know that they're trying to take everything you know in a more defensive direction under peers i get that i mean this the signing of you know wilkins obviously signals that as well and you're right you're right he's trying to drag this thing back 25 30 years um two tight end sets and run the ball pitcher or deer also that takes really good quarterbacks to to do that it's just a different style of quarterback you know what i mean that that takes a that takes a field general you know statue type that can hand the ball off and throw it throw it you know a bomb on play action you know what i mean you which you don't have on the roster right now i like benchu uh a lot i think that at the end of the day he's going to end up being the best if not is already the best quarterback from his draft class um for one and and he's building he's really become uh the modern day ryan fits patrick uh you know and he's he's probably the best backup most stable backup you could possibly have but uh you know he's good for eight wins as a starter you know in 16 games so you know eight and a half and 17 game call it um on a good roster and the Raiders aren't that so i don't think they're going to get that far and i don't think anybody does uh and that's the problem is that he's got he's got the ceiling that he has and uh unless you're you know unless you've got a an amazing roster he's not going to get you where you need to go uh so yeah i don't know how they miss on quarterback either um it just doesn't make sense well i don't wish they're all right they didn't take a shot yeah i guess that's how you didn't even try yeah yeah i wish they would have got picked up joe flacko though like yeah you're gonna do a stylistic match and then if he gets hurt whatever you bottom out you know like it it's just a weird middling position you can't do that not in that division not in the AFC it's no it'll be a much more interesting team i think 2025-2026 um and hopefully this regime survives in your own division i think the chargers are going to do a better job of that with harvaugh they're going to do the same thing the way better than you and i think they're like so like it's there's a problem right there you're you're gonna play this team two times a year that's that's that's trying to operate the same archetype and it's going to crush it with just in herbert and and you're gonna fall flat on your face because you don't have better pieces you don't have the pieces to do it you just don't it's kind of like it's kind of like the patreon's west you know what i mean it's the the the talent is just not there and everywhere you look it's almost like that's worse than i thought well not the raiders have more talents than the patriots i had a new graphic up earlier i i think the patriots are the single worst roster in the nfl right now which is you've actually now hit rock bottom the bell and check brady era completely over jared mayo's in charge and i don't know how well this is going to go this may be a case of you don't want to be the guy that files the guy yeah you got a rookie head coach a first-time uh offensive coordinator in van pelt that didn't set the world on fire in the first place and a rookie quarterback and no probably no go you guys feel good about drink may i mean he seemed to be the most over drafted up the group okay yeah i like me but but you got him behind a bad offensive line that's going to take years to fix you got him with bad receivers that's going to take time to continue to add to it fix um cool you extended your running back that's fine uh but defensively christian barmor's out for the year so that's a major blow uh you trade you down which made sense it made a lot of sense to do that but defensively they need to be rebuilt too uh you they've got some interesting guys but those were bill bellacek interesting guys those guys might not be that interesting without bill bellacek so uh they better hope that they can continue on that strong schematic path that they were on christian consolos is very good so they have a couple foundational pieces i like may but is may the guy to overcome all of these things i mean chances are no one is right like there's very very very few human beings that are so it may not matter well and i'm not saying he's innately talented but nobody's really asking the question about what happened to mac jones right now either and and i mean you're talking look jones showed more flashes in his preseason debuts than may did and here jones in in uh you know patriots first patriots practice uh was able to just shred the first team defense and they and they raved about that i live in boston they raved about that on spores talk radio here non-stop back then um and and and and may's not really doing the exact same thing um and and i always look at you know when you come out of college and you have one of these old coaches like mac brown okay so what do your other quarterbacks look like if may is successful you will be the first successful mac brown coach in the eric quarterback in the nfl and and and he of he will probably be the third or fourth most highly touted of all of them probably third he's probably but i mean i'll second i guess bikoi was felt under him from a from a draft prospect angle of the car but outplayed him as a college quarterback yeah mac koi had that elbow injury and i think that but but before that mac koi was was going to be up there i i mean he was he had different arm strength at that time that's reaching way back but uh but yeah that's the thing with me it was like he's kind of same thing you know what i mean like i yeah yeah jones jones had a very translatable skill set though like if you gave him everything he needed which was a good offensive line keep him upright in the pocket and some playmaking if you replicated similar to his alabama situation he should have carved up everybody and we saw it in his work a year he could carve up teams uh that touch okay the snowball yeah he has touch he's good decision maker he had a good skill set i i like me but he's a project and i you wonder it's like you might have just gone to the wrong place it's it's amazing to me how much the wheels have come off in foxborough since since brady left i mean it's just absolutely amazing it when you think about the fact that that i know right think about the fact that girod mayo was a linebackers coach he wasn't even the defensive coordinator he got that is that is the quickest that's like it's a huge jump professionally uh like the patriots are worth roughly nine and a half billion dollars and you've got somebody who's never done this before controlling the franchise with a rookie uh you know quarterback to go with him and and no talent on the roster so have fun well fun with that you know like his mindset and his innate intelligence yeah they like they like how we understand he went and worked in the corporate world yeah so yeah there you go could be a new model it can work mike tomlin wasn't a coordinator that's fair sure yeah you did read some supporting stuff though yeah there was some concerning stuff this off season though i think with uh mayo being a yes man compared to to bill and i think that craft yes egos yeah the craft egos i think got in the way of and i'm not saying they should have kept bill any longer i think that ten year ran itself out but you know did they get in their own way did they really with how bill and with how bill and mayo interacted in the last you know especially late in the season was real strange because they were a lot closer than that and you kind of wonder if maybe mayo got and but i don't think i don't think robert crap but maybe jonathan crafts here uh because you know jonathan has a lot of pull with the team um it certainly kind of seems like that you know what i mean and and uh and and to and to have that kind of subterfuge happen to what such a legendary coach is just just shows what a what a micky mouse you know organization it was and how much brady really i mean look the buccaneers were the most penalized team in the nfl the year before brady got there and the least penalized team in the nfl with brady on the roster he has a way of kind of uh you know it's like i read that by uh it's my personally my my grandmother was an amazing person and i always think i always made decisions in my life uh as to like what would grandma think and i think that's what they think about tom brady is like they act like what would brady they fight you know what i mean like uh coderias tony's not lining up offsides with tom brady on the team and i love mahal he doesn't he doesn't command the same kind of you know uh he's getting maybe not yet yeah oh yeah i mean look at yeah i look at you know brady's resume it's you know two different sets i think brady was the most cerebral quarterback of all time mahomes is the most physically gifted i've ever seen well if you're in Kansas city there is no question i mean maybe i hear maybe you could give a question and you read them mahomes those are the two guys in charge because it's a night and day difference when you go watch training camp now that iraq bianomy's gone the two loudest voices you hear are Andy reid and patrick mums there's nobody that's talking over him it's go time and and i think that quarterback as the leader is a huge part of making the team successful so that's something that we're going to see in a few places and one other team is we're kind of winding it down i wanted to bring up the denver broncos bonixes looked good yeah big decision you know walked from your veteran leader high-paid free agent quarterback and russell wellson is it going to work out okay for shawn pain going with bonix and eating that i think it was 80 million in dead money they're going to have to eat over a couple of years when did i can i think so yeah i think it was the right fit between the player and the scheme and the coach the situation i think it's all good i like bonix you know is he going to be top five quarterback me nfl probably not but he could be a top 12 guy and look at late career drew breeze and what chon peton did with that skill set now you know is he ever going to be the decision maker with the accuracy of drew breeze probably not however uh you you can see what they did with them and they continually built that offense around a skill set that was very clear and i think bow has the same type of acumen he's so experienced i mean you love the experience we saw him play two different styles in college he's a great athlete even if he doesn't play to it all of the time i actually think it's good that he rains it in because he's not overextending himself he you know he's got some things to clean up that first game his stats look pretty good he looked pretty nervous though those feet were moving he was holding the ball a little bit he was double clutching a little bit the game seemed a little bit fast that second game it was all fixed everything was so much smoother he was protecting the ball better as soon as that for i think it was like that first pass was almost an interception of the scene after that happened much cleaner game from him we know he can change we know he's a hard worker because we saw it in college the way he changed the way he took to a new playbook in situation so i think you could definitely get you know look at ryan i go back to him but like ryan tanhill was for the titans when it worked really really well i think bonyx could have an entire career of that type of effectiveness and that if you compare that with a good defense and a good running game we talked about that earlier and those are things that shawn patons had you know at least more through like the back half of his career we know like the middle years there didn't always have a great defense had some struggles there but he always finds good running backs and he finds him cheap he gets him to be very efficient he always has a great offensive line and he's been figuring out the defense over the last half of his career so i do think denver is going to be a team that you're not going to want to play maybe not as much this year but i think they're building in the right direction around the coach's skill set which is not not for every but like i think paton is a little bit unique with that um i don't think he's like the best coach in the world or anything but i think he has a very specific style and he can meld a little bit and i think nix is that right type of quarterback to build around for him well he's got the model that he wants to use now it's the guy who left russell wilson he's going to be your starter in pittsburgh i i questioned that decision because i would have gone with justin fields where you have some upside potential but do you think mike tomlin and the stealers can get anything out of russell wilson still can russell to paraphrase is why see era level up still i i don't think they're going to get a lot out of wilson but i don't know that they need to if if he can play to where he was in denver this team can probably still win ten games um they have the highest payroll on defense in the league which is true year over year over year um they of course brought in queen at middle you know at the middle linebacker i think that that that helps you know their defense all the more um they'll be able to rush the passer really good they do all the things that you need to do defensively in in the nfl and and they um you know they can always find talent at receiver uh you know what i mean and and they have talent at receiver now with you know with pickings and so um you know i like some of their pieces uh and uh i i kind of disagree with you on justin fields too fields to me is like a like a worse but more athletic daniel jones i just can't make heads or tails of about half the decisions i don't i mean like you you just make bad choices and i don't think that's something you can overcome as a quarterback especially in the nfl jones like in the preseason is throwing interceptions on against vanilla coverage you know what i mean like and this is here for what five and you're getting paid like we can't we can't do that you know what i mean and and i think fields is very similar where it he just makes real head-scratching decisions Russ won't turn the ball over as much as his fields will and i think that's why now i do think they'll they'll tomblin smart and they'll find a way to get him in the game and they'll get him touches they will he's mentioned him already as a potential kick returner which is i think insane because you're gonna get him injured real quick like that but uh but you know i he that shows you that he's you're going to find a way to think outside the box and get him touches i believe well there's history of that in pittsburgh too gotta go back a ways to the slash but maybe that could be just in fields for all like as we're ramping it up here on fired up network time out looking ahead to the nfl season bringing back home to kansas city season kicks off next thursday the chiefs against the ravens go ahead and give me a pat cowl start the end now do you feel about that game chiefs against the ravens starting it off super excited um you know i think back to last year's season opener and i think you know kansas sees the better team they have the home field advantage but it's never that easy it's never that easy week one and it's usually like that the first couple of weeks i actually think baltimore is a pretty good chance to win this game and i think part of that is because they were humiliated and they've been hearing about it all off season and i'm telling you they're not the better team in this game but detroit wasn't either but detroit had a little bit more of that umf and they put a little bit more of that emphasis on the uh on these regular season matchups as like approve it whereas kansas cities live in high and free like i think you know i'm super optimistic about their season so i'm going to go with baltimore a little bit because i think we're going to see everyone picking the chiefs look at the chiefs when i'm you know not going to be surprised but at the same time i think baltimore is going to come out and i think they're going to be amped up to a level that kansas city doesn't need to get to they're going to be like hey we're going to do our thing we have a lot of new pieces and that's okay we're going to break them in a little bit but we're going to break them in how we want to we saw bilt bellacek do this for years with new england new england was generally not a great team in the first month of action and then week five hit boom switch flipped they knew exactly who they were and they would just run rough shot on everybody i think kansas cities kind of hit that point in their dynasty where it's like we need to we want to try some stuff out we're going to try to win no doubt about it we might still win along the way but we need to give these new pieces a little bit more of the pie and let them fail and if they fail for that first month then we're going to make some changes but we need to see it first i think that's a mark of a really smart and really good franchise that's confident in its ability whereas baltimore i don't think they have mess around time i think they've got to hit the ground and they've got to play how they play and they have to do it well because of north they're they have no room and i think alex hit the nail in the head you know russell wilson doesn't have to be much he just has to not be can he pick it yeah brown that's not those games yeah yeah i mean if de shawn watson is average that brown seems going to be a unit and then we know you know we know since an a is going to be tough too so i'm going to pick baltimore i mean well yeah we'll see you with that with that wrist injury i mean that things that thing seems i'm surprised we're not hearing a little bit more about that um i think he threw three times three days in a row one time over the last month um that's not great for a wrist injury no but if he's healthy he's you know they're gonna be right in the middle of it yeah alex how do you feel week one so great uh yeah i i feel almost the exact same way the end does i'm not going to create much controversy with that i guess but you know same way i just think the ravens need it more and the chiefs are in a spot this is kind of like the labyrinth leakers period where you know we're going to kind of save it you know what i mean we got we got to be ready for the playoffs and we're gonna make the playoffs and and and it's the same thing that Ian said in the division itself baltimore is going to be if they're leading the division mid-season they're going to be looking right over their shoulder and i don't know that they're going to be leading it mid-season you know what i mean it's one of those one of those scenarios and so and that's almost a guarantee like you know i pretty much got ravens bangles stealers browns one two three four but i wouldn't be shocked if at mid-season the browns are one game back of the ravens you know what i mean at all and i don't think anyone would so so that's the situation and that's why this is an extremely i'd say important game for the ravens and not even close to unimportant game for the chiefs and for that reason i i think the ravens are win plus they're very talented it's not it's not that uh as you take the entire roster they they might even have more talent on the entire roster than the chiefs do if you just take away the quarterbacks but uh that's the most important position and if this are a playoff game i take the chiefs it's just not yeah the chiefs are in that championship mode where each regular season game doesn't mean that much and the chiefs do have the benefit of being in a division at least this year that i think you pencil them in as the division winner today and really don't even think about it much harvaugh's gonna get the charges better but it's not this year i think the baroncos are getting better but it's not this year and the raiders are only they're the raiders they haven't they haven't really gotten it figured out since rich gannon was there so it's going to be a little while i'm going to go with the chiefs though because of the one move they made and we got them right here they traded not that i think juju smith schuster's going to do that much but it's addition by subtraction coderias tony's gone and they would have beat detroit last year minus travis calcy minus chris jones if they just didn't put coderias tony out of the field if you took coderias out they would have beaten the lion so i'm going to say the chiefs win but it's close because they're not going a hundred percent all in sellout to win every game and and they're not going to this year all right i could see them going 12 and 5 and that'll be fine that wins the division i might get the number one seed first or second seed yeah yeah and everybody'll be okay and if the chiefs at some point go two and three all the stations in kansas city will light up with phone calls all day saying oh my god what's wrong we're going to be horrible and they'll be the topic of the day on espan asking if the chiefs have lost it because that'll give them something to talk about as opposed to the Dallas Cowboys uh 20 hours a day out of the 24 hour day we'll try not to do that here on the fired up network the best place to watch the fired up network throughout the season or at any time is to get that true tv plus app you can download it anywhere you get the apps as we wrap up preseason preview week one the season kicks off next thursday in any final thoughts as we head in head on into the regular season tv a fun year and i think you know what's what the future has to hold i think is going to be looming over the season for a number of teams um not only from a coaching standpoint with some of these teams i think from the quarterbacks sham Watson deck Prescott Brock perdy that makes this a fairly unprecedented year erin rogers same thing we all want to know what's going to happen to some of these guys uh we obviously have a ton of young talent too which is really exciting cj shroud anthony richardson this rookie class incredible if we get to see fields at some point so i'm really excited i mean you know i do think that the chiefs win it again i'm going to be honest i think that this is a dynasty that we have very rarely seen throughout nfl history and i say that on the heels of the greatest dynasty ever um but i think we're writing to another dynasty and i think it's going to be where you know until we see it i don't know who's going to beat him so hopefully everyone stays healthy obviously that's number one i don't want to see you know we're going to see injuries but hopefully you know not as many as in recent years less ACLs for sure but um i'm expecting a really good year it's going to be a lot of fun a lot of drama which is fun for us and um yeah i think uh AFC is is going to be just wild truly wild with Houston Miami Buffalo Cleveland so many storylines throughout the year i can't wait yeah lots of good teams Alex your thoughts yeah yeah i'm going to go to the NFC yeah i'm going to actually go to the NFC and you know the actually one division in the NFC north i just think the north itself is going to be just insane this year uh it's probably going to be the the tightest race you see all year in the NFC Caleb Williams is going to be the most exciting thing in the one o'clock hour every single week basically uh that's it's going to be awesome i mean he's got like a little Lamar little my homes little Josh Allen to him he's got you know this versatility you know what i mean like he's just he's just so much fun to watch um and so that's going to be great i think that the uh Packers take a step forward the Lions struggle a little with being the hunted instead of the hunter uh you know i i like Dan Campbell a lot but i think he succeeds more in that hunter role than the hunted role um and i think that the team will follow that you know you know always follow the head coach but i don't think they take a huge step back it's just the Packers are so good and so talented in fact i'll put this out there right now i've already laid down a futures bet on Jordan Love to win the MVP this year uh because of how hot he finished last year how much the NFL loves an up and coming quarterback uh if the if the Packers find their way to a 13 14 win division championship season i i think it puts him in that conversation and i don't think that's hard to expect from them i think the Lions will still be in the playoffs but i think the Packers beat them and it go and that's the north coast one two you know uh Packers Lions yeah that'll be a good division that's definitely going to be one to watch well and we'll be checking in throughout the season and following the NFL we'll still get our college coverage in there and gonna be doing some timeout Kansas City focusing specifically on Kansas City teams especially the royals sitting less than a full game out of first place right now in the central division so just been a crazy year in the western division sorry i'm getting my divisions messed up just been a crazy year in sports in Kansas City and i'm bouncing off of i believe i was on an airplane yesterday for 26 hours so it was a long
