Welcome back to Claire Michigan, where the Claire pioneers are welcoming in the Grayling Vikings for this kickoff to the Grayling Vikings football season. I'm Chad Patterson, host of the game tonight along with a good friend and color analyst Scott Nicholas, and we are so glad to be here with you for this start of the high school football season and Scott. These this Grayling Viking team has well, they lost a lot of players last year. I mean, a lot of players who as freshmen played in a state semi final and they're on the sidelines for that historic season that we had. And those players are gone. There a lot of them are off to college and a lot of them are the military on with their lives. And it is time for, you know, the next generation to step up right now. Chad, we talked a few times over the summer and I heard it a billion times are like, Oh, we can't wait for football says can't wait to hear Chad and you and it's gonna be a blast. And what do you think? What do you think? Well, you know, what's your prognostication and stuff? Folks, I'm done doing that. Every time I've done it, I've been totally wrong. And you know, I just hope that everybody stays healthy. And I hope that the kids come out with a fire in their belly like unknown to mankind and just come come on this beautiful new turf field. Just a few years old and come out and put 110% out there. Yes, this Brookwood athletic complex is absolutely beautiful that they built here and clear. It's gorgeous. If you ever get a chance to come down here and see a game, it is absolutely wonderful. And of course, we came straight down 127 Scott. Everybody else head at North for Labor Day weekend. But me and Scott were the only ones we're very lucky. It was very nice me. Just us in the, you know, the QTA feeding for the Viking Express and the Grayling Viking Express bus. And that was it. That was then and the fans that came out here from Grayling. So welcome. We are glad you are here and hope you are here on Q 100 all season long. The captains for the Grayling Vikings. We have three seniors, Gavin Sickovich, Corbin Allen and Devin Demir. I believe it were Dominic Demir. I'm sorry, Dominic Demir. And I know his name darn it. And I believe we had one junior and that was Noah Gabriel. And I asked Coach Tony the other day about his leadership on this team. He feels really good about it. He feels good about the guys that have stepped up. So let's hear a little bit more of that interview rate now that I had with Coach Tony. And welcome to the Johnson's propane pregame show here on Q 100 home of Vikings football all season long. And we are here it is finally the 2024 season. And I'm sitting here with Coach Eric Tunney and coach is finally here the season is about ready to begin about ready to kick off. And I know you are super excited. Yeah, we're back, baby. It's a wonderful time of year. Getting back to school and get back to football and get ready for some Friday nights. Although Thursday night this week. And of course, you know, the seniors are all gone. And those seniors had a lot of experience. I mean, a lot of them played as freshmen in that big playoff run during the COVID year when you guys went all the way to state semifinals. So a little bit of a bittersweet, you know, feeling going into this season. But I know you're excited about this new team. Just tell me some of the things that you're excited about. Yeah, for sure. It's, you know, we I've always missed all my seniors when I leave. But when you got a strong class like that, you know, one, it's tough to replace them. But two, there are a lot of good kids in there and just missing them. But it's also exciting them hearing them go on to college. And hey, you know, have fun. And they're like, thanks for reaching out coach and things like that. So they'll go on to do good things. But yeah, we're back in, you know, I think this these juniors and seniors this year, they're they're ready to make a name for themselves and make plays on Friday nights. And you know, they've kind of, I don't say been in the shadows, but it's their time to step up. Yeah, absolutely. And I heard there was some stepping up in the scrimmage this past week. You took a look at what Ogamal, Hote Lake, maybe one of the towers. Okay, how did they look in that? Yeah, I was very pleased. One, we got out with no injuries during the scrimmage. That's always good. That's a way and that's why you win a scrimmage if coaches are listening. But yeah, we had a guys execute played well, we were definitely not perfect. But you know, Ogamal and particularly they're they're always big and tough and physical. And and I liked how we handled them. We were pretty balanced with them. And then yeah, just getting some guys getting able to tackle and hit other people. It's always fun. And we can get away injury free. It's a good thing. And starting the season a little differently than we have all every season that you've coached. We started out against the Raskow and Bucks. But this year, it's the Claire pioneers down on there a turf. And hopefully we put on a great a show on turf down there. But tell me a little bit about the pioneers and what they bring to the table. Yeah, it's definitely different. You know, talking to some alumni, they're not playing Raskow. And it's like, yeah, I know it's, it's tough, the point system and playoffs and things like that. But yeah, excited to go to Claire. You know, I don't know that we've ever played them. But we scrimmage them every year, I think, since I've been here. So we are familiar with them. We're familiar with their stadium. We scrimmage their every year as well. So yeah, they're good. They got some perimeter guys from last year. I know that that are going to make plays. And I think we need to dominate the offensive lines, which with our our size, we should be able to do that. But it's all going to be settled during the game. All right. And I'm sure that you've named your captains. You don't have to name them here right now. But I know that there's a lot of a lot of players that have been earning that position since they came to the team. And just talk a little bit about your your leadership and what you've seen so far in practice. Yeah, it's so it's kind of tough because when you have such a strong leadership group, a senior class that graduates, the underclassmen don't have a lot of those opportunities or need to lead. So it's something we've been trying to put on our kids to do. I've seen a lot of improvement throughout camp as far as guys one coaching each other, which is as a coach, it's one of the best things to see is your upperclassmen coaching the the younger guys and they notice something they can explain it to them. But you know, I think we're still finding some of our guys are still finding that path. It's not something that just comes or clicks. So it's something I got to do a better job or continue to do growing like our kids with leadership. But it's definitely something that they've grown since August 12th. I'm sure that he sends out his best to all of his old friends in Grayling and it was just awesome to see him. And that's what the ball season is all about, right? He run into old friends and it's just great. They need to stick to the game plan. These coaches have been busting their tails for the last few months. They're getting together. They're getting in the weight room. They're doing the texting that you know, that they're doing the nightly practices that two days, whatever they done just to kind of get these rookies to get ready for the big time action tonight. Absolutely. And here they are. They just came out of the locker room. They're making their way onto the field as Claire's band is playing their fight song. And let me tell you, this place is packed on the Claire side of the field. They support their football team. And with and rightly so, I mean, their football team has really, really played well in the last few years. Oh, yeah, I remember the the time a good friend of my son, Justin's Ryan Pummel was here. Heck of a football player. And you know, he's one of his best friends. He was out to Doug Pummel. If you're listening out, Montana, that's right. And you know what, I just remember watching these kids always making the playoffs, always get into the second round and getting into regionals, different things like that. Yeah, the kids love playing on it when they have a scrimmage error the last couple of years this year with scrimmage in Houghton Lake, which is a little different for the boys. But you know what they said it's good footing and they can trust their cuts. And I also want to mention that a couple of people have checked in via text and that is of course Mrs. Hollingsworth, Cheryl Hollingsworth, a great big fan of Grayling Viking kids. Forget about just sports. I mean, she just loves the students. She's a great teacher there and she's got her pom-poms and she's excited. So thank you very much. And then of course we got Jake Husband listening down in South Bend. That's right. You can trust in Husband. He is down there and he is going to the University of Notre Dame. We wish you all the best, Jake. You're such a great kid and such a great player and we will definitely miss you. But we know you'll do great things. It looks like Noah Gabriel and saying Katie Schubert is going to be back to Caden Schubert and Noah Gabriel going to be back deep for the Grayling Vikings to receive their good things about Caden this this summer in the early you know late summer and he's really put the time in the in the weight room and he's really made some good steps. And Dane Tuskamp will be kicking off for the Claire pioneers and we are just about underway folks. Are you ready for some football? Let's go and here we go. Tuskamp coming in and he's going to kick it off and he's kicking it deep. It goes to Noah Gabriel. He feels it at the 15 up to the 2025 and he is going to go down right there at the 26 and number seven with a great, great tackle there. Porter Hirsch for the Claire pioneers. Porter Hirsch also one of those big stars on offense. We'll have to watch out for him. He stays out there to be in defense. He's going to be a defensive back for the Claire pioneers. I love the way he used his shoulder pads. Of course you hear a lot of people saying don't use your helmet. Don't lead with your head. He did not. He put his he put his pads right in the belly button. Took him down for the first time in three years. I'm not going to say cajeric in the pistol. It is. We got we got a new weapon back there Corbin Allen in the pistol. He's got Noah Gabriel to his left and not Jake Husband. So we got to get used to that right now. Corbin Allen sends Schubert emotion. Fakes it to Schubert. He's going to run to the outside. He's got a little bit of a seam. It's up over the 30 to 32. Nice gain on first down Scott. Hey a nice block by Brock's Musk got number 72. He's a new starter for us. He pulled out had a nice little kick out block on the defensive end. We got a nice little gain there. And I know it looks like Brock's. It's actually just Brock. It's Brock. Well, you know what? Hey, it's just Brock. I like him. I like him. Absolutely. Big fella. All right. Here we go. Corbin Allen in the pistol. He's got his running back set out to his left. That is Gabriel. He hands it off to Gabriel Gabriel trying to get free. Oh, nice tackle right there by a host of pioneers and they drop him for a loss. Kind of look like a little bit of a face mask at the end there, but you know what? You just got to go with the punches. Well, check this out for a football name Trevyn Erbianak is the first one in there. He's pulling on the jersey. So we got a third down and seven and 10 40 to go in this first quarter. Corbin Allen trying to get him to jump off sides right there. Ethan Carrick was so good at that when he played and Corbin Allen gets the snap. He's rolling out to his left looking to throw. He throws it and all goes through the hands of Kate and Schubert. And then he was also he had two chances to complete in that pass guy. That was going to be a completed pass to Miles Mead. He was open. He did the outcut, but the receiver that was 10 yards in front of him. It was a line drive pass. It was tipped by the other receiver and it was going to go to Miles. So fourth down and seven to go and it looks like Corbin Allen is getting he's lining his offense up right now. And let's see if they go back into the formation out of this. Yep, they are going to do that. Just like when Carrick was here and Corbin Allen gets a punt offense to an end over end and it's going to bounce take a railing bounce and it is recovered by the Claire pioneers and they're going to start out on their 33 yard line on their own 33. So here comes that haunted offense from Claire. They scored over 400 points last season, Scott. And they're looking and I'm sure they want to they want to get in here and start eating soon. Well, they're pretty much like every other high school now is everybody does the spread offense, but they have the talented athletes that you haven't seen around the crannling parts like for our opponents in the last few years, but this is going to be a fun test. It's going to be fun to watch him. Jaden Arthur in the shotgun sends a man in motion. He's going to fake it to the. No, he gives it to the up back and the up back takes it all the way down across the 50 there into grailing Viking territory. Great tackle there by Corbin Allen, but not before the big fella goes up over the 50 and gets into Viking territory. Corbin is our starting quarterback and our starting safety. He if if your safety is your leading tackler this year, we're going to have a lot of issues. So our boys are going to tighten up, but you know what? It's their first play on defense. Arthur in the shotgun again sends a man in motion. He's going to take it himself. Nice job right there. Great tackle. And I believe that was Vaughn Gartner Vaughn Gartner and number 71 Xavier White, and that is going to be a TFL. They lost about a yard on that place, got. Yeah, they got into the backfield. They really broke through their tackles, got right across the center and their left guard and made the play in the backfield. Nice job right there by Gartner and White. Okay. Here we go. Arthur in the shotgun second down and 10 for the pioneers. Let's call it 10 and a half. They got a blitz coming off the ball and the Grayley Vikings are on it. The first turnover in the season goes Grayley Vikings way and look at that baby. That is a fired up Viking team Scott. Boy, he met him in the hole and he made sure that he lost that ball 110 percent. Great, great, you know, response by Grayley's defense. You give up a big play right off the bat. Last two plays a TFL and then a fumble. Hey, they're meeting them, you know, face mask to face mask. That's all you can ask for, Chad. Yep. Great effort right there on defense and they are in a great field position. They are on their own 47 right near midfield. Here we go. Corbin Allen in the pistol. He sends me in motion, facing to me. He's going to take it himself. He's got some room on the 10th side. He's got a first down and four and Corbin Allen goes out of bounds at the 40 yard line of the pioneers. What does that Scott? That's a feeny Ford first down, folks. I mean, he's he's an athlete. That's all you. It doesn't matter what sporty plays. He's going to be tremendous at it. Hey Corbin Allen in the pistol standing on that big giant sea right at midfield. Second in 11. He's looking to throw. He's got time. He's going long and he's got a man out there and just short armed it a little bit. And there were some extra curriculars after the play. They're Austin Schwartz in the quarterback. I think a little acting was going on there too. Yeah. Austin was going down the sideline, but he kind of brought it a little closer to the to the field instead of towards the sidelines and threw it to the wrong shoulder a little bit. So he had to kind of turn two different times and that was just not going to happen. All right. Here we go. Third down and 11. Big play for this Grayling Viking team. Maybe four down territory across midfield. You want to try to cash in on that turnovers guy. Yeah. You want to get the first down here. I mean, you got it. Okay. Corbin Allen in the pistol since Miles me the emotion fakes it to him. Here's a little outside screen pass to Schwartz. Schwartz trying to get free. Does, but only for about six yards and finally gets out of bounds and he might have more than six yards there, Scott. Well, he was dragging him. He was out of bounds and got still hanging out his foot and he was about a foot outside. So the refs are letting him play. Well, they did go out of bounds. So it's going to be fourth and six. Let's see what coach Eric Tunney and coach Nicholas does here on this big fourth down play. Well, knowing anything about Justin, he's going to go for it. He's going to put the pedal to metal. They turned the ball over on downs and the Claire pioneers coming back now. They got the ball. Here's Arthur. Arthur passes it outside to Laoce. Laoce makes the man miss. Oh, man, what a move. He's going to go all the way. 30, 20, 10, touchdown! Claire, what a move. Once he broke that tackle, Scott, he was gone. Well, three guys overran him. If they would have just watched him and stayed, they had him only for a five-yard gain. They let him dictate it. So they got to understand they got pads on too. They just stay right in front of them. They're going to be fine. Unofficially, it is a Jaden Arthur to Ryan Laoce. A 63-yard pass play. It was just a little swing pass out to the outside to the wide receiver. And Laoce did the rest. He broke a tackle right at the line of scrimmage. And Boise fast. Brutal the guy. And then just kept on running. Wow, that was exciting. Yeah, he's fast. And here's the kick. It's up and it's good. A hat trick right there with a nice little sweet pass out to Ryan Lodge, and Ryan Lodge just, well, once he broke that tackle, Scott, he saw nothing but green in front of them. Yeah, I mean, he made the guys best. Don't get me wrong, I was saying that we overran it, but we did. It's just a fact of a couple of the guys were just so worried. They didn't want to get around. Well, he made that quick step, cut inside the hash marks there, and just outran everybody after he got through that initial tackle. Great play by a great athlete. 63 yard pass play from Jayden Arthur to Ryan Lodge, and congratulations to him too, just making it so far in the World Series there. We talked about how he might be a little rusty from baseball. I don't think so. I think he just knocked that rust off right there. All right, Juice Camp will kick off for Claire, and he's kicking off to Noah Gabriel and Caden Schubert for Grayling. Grayling's going to field. Actually, they're not going to get a chance to field this. That's going to be a penalty as he kicks it out of bounds, so we'll take that field position, Scott. Oh, most definitely. And the thing is, is our offenses got to take a page from Claire's. We're going to have to hit some big plays. We can't just be one-minded and say, okay, well, we're going to run court. The only thing that's been really effective is a couple runs by Corbin to the outside. So let's kind of diversify our offense and kind of move it around a little bit here. would be our uh leaving rusher this season uh talk a little bit about what he's done on the ground you know he's got 11 rushes for 79 yards an old Gabriel's got five for four and you know the thing is for years what what have we done we we've been a throwing team and then we we had j customer for last couple years so you got over a thousand yard russia right there well when you're a thousand yard russia could possibly be your quarterback that's a little rough to take but you know what cormen's three for ten for 26 yards miles meet one for three very impressed with miles meet though having four catches for 28 yards absolutely i mean he's always been either a quarterback or a receiver but mostly a quarterback like in the jv level but he's stepping up and he's he's putting his best foot forward so very impressed yes and really shows kind of like a slot receiver seven yards per catch i mean that's what you want you know you want a possession receiver who can get you that first down get you some gritty yards and uh maybe some maybe some yards after the catch we did see daniel hunter catches first ball right there before half-time hoping to see a lot more of that and Austin Schwartz came out of the gate strong and hopefully you can do that how about uh tackles it looks like Xavier white's got a few he's got three cormen allen's got three and then we got a bunch at one like vongartner uh nick ganther kate and subert dominic demir but what i want to see is our defensive backs right now i mean they're athletes are taking have taken over the game they're breaking tackles they're just basically running through us um and it's hard to see because i love the physicality and i always have with grilling football well we got to show that in the second half because in the first half it was a little tough to watch because you know there's some place we should we really should have made and the kids will tell you that the coaches will tell you that so right now they're in there they're talking about it they're regrouping and they're getting ready for that second half well hopefully in this second half the grilling Vikings can make it great and they can make seeing he's visiting with uh there and his son and uh what are you seeing that uh that the great invite kids could uh work on and play a little bit better um the one thing that i saw was the short pass game um i like the transition to miles meet at quarterback i think Corbin is just a an athletic match up for a lot of reasons right and when we went to that short passing game i thought uh that really opened things up a little bit and and hopefully you know we'll focus on that a little bit more in the second half i agree and i they did get a lot of positives done it was just it's one of those deals where it's like they're you know they're driving between the 30s trying to get it and get some things done and i think they probably will get on the board and i think that they'll find a way to get Daniel Hunter the ball too because he's a weapon yeah definitely um it'll be interesting to see how reps go second half is it going to be you know 80 percent Corbin and then a little bit of miles or is it going to be you know the flip-flop i like either option but i just i think Corbin is just that good of an athlete that we got to get him out in space and unfortunately doing it from the through the soccer nets all season long they're undefeated how many games they played so far Scott well right now coach Andy Moore the boy soccer team is 4-0 to start the season with four shutouts nice bret peterson leads the team in scoring with six goals two assists cam baker has four goals and drake dunham has three goals so far they they beat uh point city four nothing standish five nothing uh shaboygan 12 nothing harbor springs three nothing they play at home tuesday the third and he said that they've gotten it rolling early but they got some tough ones coming up on the schedule so they're gonna he says we're gonna see how good we really are coming up here well it sounds like well of course you got you know elk rapids and charlotte boy and harbors oh yeah cal casca has really built up their program so uh there's lots of teams out there that just like coach more said you know they're gonna find out who they are and it sounds like they are playing really really well so i'm very happy with them they lost much like a football team you know they lost some senior leadership last year uh mitchell harrington not there anymore so uh you know some guys had to step up and i'm so glad to hear that about bret peterson man that love that kid he's funny yeah and like coach more is said he goes he goes you know when you play out crap at charlotte boy teams like that you all you do had a free week too well you know all play out points yeah play out points it all came together so you know what we got two away games right off so folks don't don't miss miss construe your uh schedule might show a home game but next week is we're in hope college and then we follow it up with the state champion kinksley stags at home so that is a gauntlet you know what you know i know if you can't travel to three hours down to hope college next week the week after september 13th my wife's 50th birthday you know the best looking 50-year-old i've ever seen and she is uh she is excited because we're gonna bring the pain and Viking land to the stags i hope so well there you go that is a gauntlet though scott let me tell you wow uh so usually hudson ville i just think of ice cream so i don't think of unity christian or or playing at hope college but that what an experience though uh for eric tunney's uh young team i mean to get to play on a college field i think it's great right now i mean this this field is absolutely gorgeous here in claire and uh they're gonna play at hope colleges field uh next week it's uh what what an exciting uh start to your season now granted things aren't going well tonight uh for the team but uh really i mean high school sports a lot of the time is you know uh you know we we know is all about the experience sometimes and uh really playing on a college field will be awesome for these kids i totally agree it's gonna be fun and you know what we're we're gonna make the travel um we're gonna do everything in our power to you know maybe pull off the upset of the century yeah you know or something like that but the kids are gonna come to play because i know the coaches are gonna have them ready for this second half and for next week well and guess what folks uh guess who gets the ball first well claire does claire it gets the ball first and um it's gonna be uh Cameron Baker who has had a couple of goals for the soccer team he's gonna be the one kicking off for the grilling Vikings right here and um back deep is Jacob Hollisack and Hollisack is gonna grab it at the 18 Hollisack coming up over the 30 he's trying to get to the 35 dozen up over the 39 and nice tackle right there by Danny Bonamy on kickoff uh team right there and here comes uh that offense that put up 33 well no they didn't put up 33 points i guess because one of them was scored on special teams but uh it's still it's still you still bought it still bought it yep uh so uh the offense comes out and jadon arthur at quarterback number one right there he's got a holacek he's got ryan louch uh so he's got two touchdowns to holacek he's got a couple of daniela xander's got a couple and louch has a couple so here we go uh and he senses man in motion oh it's a bad snap right to start with broken play the grilling Vikings are gonna get back there and tackle it for a big loss great play right there Danny Bonamy one of the first ones back there Isaac Garrett back there as well and uh number 55 we talked about him earlier who is that's got uh for us it's not on our list at i don't know who that is but he made a great play he got shot out of a cannon and you know what thank goodness that center threw it 20 feet over is that because we had two receivers down on the opposite end here that were basically wide open for that pass better second down and 19 to go after the uh flub snap right there and so that's a better snap right there and a pass right in the middle of the field and uh little miscommunication there with the uh receiver here Scott so kind of a discombobulated start to the second half for this offense that could do nothing wrong in the first half well konam weeks he's the slot receiver he took off like a in a fly pattern in other words like a bomb just throw it deep well he threw it only about 10 15 yards like he was supposed to come back like it was going to be like a hook pattern like a button hug right in the middle of the field and Corbin alan just let him run right by so can't go ahead get some exercise but yeah no kidding here we go jade narther it's got a man coming on the jet sweep here's the reverse here two weeks weeks he's got a lot of room down that right hand sideline and he's going through tackles and he's going to get a first down and more right there the tackle made by Isaac Garrett and that was weeks the slot receiver coming over on a beautiful play call a reverse going to the power side right there nice job by weeks again tough tackling by the uh defensive backs here's a little option play outside of hollow check hollow check's got a lot of room down the left hand sideline he's got one man to beat and he's gonna be tackled at about the five-yard line so it's gonna be first down and goal to go for the clair pioneers with 10 46 left to go in this third quarter that was dane alexander again dane alexander i'm sorry but he he made a great play he put he put his foot in the turf went all the way to the outside and our defense couldn't even catch him i mean you're you're getting gutted on the outside right now dane alexander hollow check weeks it doesn't matter loud whatever they're all weapons whatever they're doing it's working it's like a swiss army knife of weapons for uh jn Arthur right now he sends weeks in motion to the right he hands it off to van bon van bon goes up the middle for a two-yard gain it's gonna be second down and goal let's put it at the five-yard line now you know a couple times they they do that they kind of uh they they kind of just run right in the middle like try to test our trust our boys there and then it kind of softens out our softens up our defensive ends our outside linebackers saying okay well now you got to cheat in a little bit then they go right outside and get untouched well in the first half uh arthur had four touchdown passes and let's see if he looks for five right here arthur gets the snap he's gonna roll out to his right he may take this one in himself no he's looking to throw and he can't find anything he goes out of bounds that's gonna be a late hit right there by danny bonnamy unfortunately he was out of bounds and then now there's another flag so something was said on top of that scott it you know it's tough because the kids you're mad you're upset you just got called for a you know kind of a penalty you shouldn't have done and then you said something hoping that the ref doesn't hear you as you're walking away frustration yep so here we go it's going to take a minute for uh everything to be sorted out fourth quarter and we're gonna have a running clock right now and uh well you know i'm not gonna dwell on the score for grailing but uh i do want to talk about how great this claire team is and maybe they can do some special things this season they got the athletes to do it now if they can stick it up front i mean you know they're not getting a lot of production with their running game up in the middle that's true from basically tackle tackle it's all outside the tackles and it doesn't mean that they're not doing a good job it's just they're pulling a tackle to one side or the other and
