My name is Sammy Parker. I go by day them pronouns. And today is a very special episode of local singles. It is our five year anniversary show. The song that we started off the show with is Hedgehog by Ginger Beef. That's off their album Ginger Beef. And the song in the background is called Meow by Future Woom. Before we get started with our show today, I do want to say that we are broadcasting from the University of Calgary radio station here, C-J-S-W 90.9 FM. And we want to acknowledge and pay tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, districts 5 and 6. So, like I said earlier, this is our five year anniversary show five years ago on Wednesday, September 4th. We kicked off our inaugural episode of local singles. A little bit of history before that, we started with a program called New Horizons, which is a program for brand new programmers. They have rotating slots of about eight weeks, so brand new programmers can test out their skills and get more comfortable with being on air. So, directly after we did New Horizons back in 2019, we hopped on to our first slot on Wednesday, which was at 10 a.m. and then a few years later in March we got moved to the 12 p.m. slot and we've been here ever since. So, today's show is going to cover a whole bunch of different music that we have loved over the past five years. And oh my goodness, this show was so incredibly hard to plan. I can't even tell you how I chose a lot of the songs because there's so many great artists that I've encountered over the years. So, for this week's show, we're going to be playing as many tracks as we can from our favorite artists over the past five years. And later on on our Instagram, we'll go over some of the top albums over the years as well, so keep an eye out for that. Finally, we are going to be launching a brand new submission form on our Instagram for local singles to make it a little bit easier for artists and bands to submit their music and streamline the process a little bit. So, my inboxes aren't flooded, it's just a nice and simple process, so keep an eye out for that. We're going to get started with our very first track of the day, well technically our third, but our very first set of the day. This features a whole bunch of, well, three artists from the R&B hip-hop kind of realm. Now, I do want to warn you these next three tracks to contain naughty language. So listener discretion is advised. If you want to get in contact with me, I will be here until 1 p.m. Please let me know what your favorite moment was over the past years from local singles. If you're a brand new listener, tell me about why you love local music or why you're interested in it. That phone number is 403-220-3991. We're going to kick things off with working by Cartel Madras and G-Day on CJSW 90.9 FM. So weekend titties on perfect face like a kitty in a one-a-bitch work. Cinnamon honey with the lips on a verdict. If you talk a little bit too much, Perkins, work that Saturday night with the permit. I got big plans, you know, one-a-bitch working. You know, one-a-bitch working. Working, working, working, working. Don't know what to order 'cause they don't know what I'm surfing. Don't know what to look for 'cause we know we're searching. Bad brand bitches, then we come with a sterling today on the track and it comes to toes curling. Making my eyes locked when the beat drops beating. Got the hips off, they rock fun booty. We got the lips locked with the smoke on a dooey. We got a big black light set. We got a big big bag and you move it real slow. A slick raincoat and a bitch band-o. Snap my right hand just to keep you on the flow. Telling all my money's gonna lie real low. I smell like cream and I look like big crumbs. Slick, cream, talk you into coming to my home. Covered at my sheets with glitter and rhinestones. Add 'em to my fleet if you make some backbone. Hello. Hey, am I here for like 20 minutes? Or are you? No, no, just come to the back. Just come to the back, believe it. Yeah, yeah, we're gonna like this is so much food. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. It's fine. We're gonna eat the meat and then tone. If you like it, treat it on to your jawbone. Cut you with my teeth to sharpen shine, though. Then you can like a dream, I'll take the combo. Move like your flush when you roll with a smooth bitch. We looking plush, it's just how we market. Are you like a sponsor? Like, yeah, I'm an artist. I'm big, I'm big, I'm big, I'm big, I'm big. I got big bands, you know what I did to work in. Workin' in the truck, gonna feel like a virgin. I'm done, I playin' all night and I stay curvin'. One of the time I've been lookin' for a sub. Cartel, honey, spin up up to the club. Double red, so the top's up with the mud. And he's been a lover when I run through the cut. No, no, no. Yeah, come on. Get a motherfucker. Yeah. She was just talking shit about her in front of me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, she's a huge band, she's like me. Give me no way, no way, no way, no way. Get me through, finish up my nails and I rest. Hey, premium, usually. Yeah, on my best day, living real life. Hey, premium. Got to say, lookin' so luxe when I come. So I sing, slash with the red. Double blue, jump out of lipstick, take 'em to the club. 'Cause I bitch, I'm a cryptic. Ready, like I can try to hit me and I can take. Boy, you can't even shoot me. I got the hands, you know what I did to work in. You know what I did to work in. I got the hands, you know what I did to work in. Work, work, work, work, work. I got the hands, you know what I did to work in. You know what I did to work in. I got the hands, you know what I did to work in. Work, work, work, work, work. Work, work, work, work, work, work. Wait for my signal, wait for my shot. Yes, in my pink hair, slip to the top. Try to win a race, I forget about the heart. If you jump, you sip, if you sip, you fall. If you fall, if you fall, you're done. That's the fact of a dome. When I make it in a infinity, but I have balls. Gonna bring tea and name this answer to call. Hello, what's up? Check it back up in the cup. Ready, swingin' up a cup. So rollin' up a butter cup. If you see me, say what's up. Nigga down to chop it up. Let's I see a honey lookin' like a shot. I'm caught up. I ain't never got enough to satisfy my knees. You'll necessarily talk a net open. That's tricky. By sincere. That is off of their album. Tabula. Raza. Before that we heard rhythm and poetry from Jackie Art. And at the very top of the set we heard working. From Cartel Madras. Geed. And that's off their album. The Serpent and the Tiger. These three artists were some of the first kind of hip hop, R&B. I guess trap artists that I came across in Calgary and really vibed with. Since starting the show I've learned that local singles. Not local singles, but since starting local singles. I've learned that Calgary has a very unique and a very blended music scene with hip hop and R&B being actually probably the largest genre, in my opinion, in the city. It's a lot bigger than you think it would be. There are different scenes where you'll have a bunch of people performing but then there's also a ton of independent artists as well within that genre. So yeah, those three were some artists that really captured my attention when I first started this show. And the Rhythm and Poetry by Jackie Art. I don't know, that just hits the nice parts in my brain. Same with Tricky, same with working. It's a great set and I'm glad I was able to share that with you. So I'm not sharing any events today because it is our five year anniversary episodes. We're going to talk a little bit about some of my experiences throughout the show. So I wanted to narrow down and share with you some top five moments and experiences that I've had because of this wonderful radio station and local singles. The first one I'll share with you is I've become a bit of a local music expert and that has led to some really cool experiences with festivals and music based organizations. I've been able to volunteer my time for certain things and just really get to have a little bit more of a hand in planning or not planning out but just in the planning stages of festivals. And that is really exciting for me personally because I'm going to school specifically for event management, a little bit of a personal tidbit about me. So that's been really cool. I'll share another top five experience. Now these are in no particular order. The second one is the amount of artists I get to interact with and learn about. The amount of talent in the city is so inspiring. The creativity that these musicians, these artists, these bands have is so great to see and I get so excited every year because there's always a few artists that release something that doesn't sound anything like I've ever heard before and I'm always blown away. That comes right out of Calgary. So those are a few things I've learned or a few things that I've experienced. And we're going to move into our next set. These next three songs also feature artists that have either been played a lot on local singles or have really tickled the dopamine centers in my brain. And I hope that you get some dopamine off of this next set as well. So we're going to kick things off here with 36 and their track Samuel. For our five year anniversary show, this is local singles on CJSW. You keep that dialogue to local singles for more five year anniversary celebrations. Here is Samuel by 36. Samuel will you follow? And finally at the top of the set, we heard 36 with their track Samuel off of the album naturally. Now these three tracks Samuel here by 36 is my all time favorite 36 song released. And I think it's just because it has so many elements that are beautifully blended together. That just kind of hit all the right parts in my brain. And I hope that it kind of tickled your brain too. Octoduck with the dreamy vibes getting into something a little bit darker, a little bit artsy. And then with Brock Geiger, Steps Taken, just such a fun song. Brock Geiger has kind of exploded onto the scene this year, but is not new to the music scene. So another great set. Okay, we are about halfway through our five year anniversary show. And I kind of want to do something a little bit different, a little bit fun. We are going to have a little bit of a dance party, a little bit of a break because this next song is a song that I had to include in today's episode. And we also had a live session with them and that was super super fun so go check out that album as well. All right we got about 15 minutes left in the show I have one more set for you and it's a fun one it's a bit of a post punk set but before we get into that we were talking a little bit earlier in the show about top five moments and experiences that I've had running local singles I talked about becoming a bit of a local music expert being able to help out with different festivals and music organizations. I talked about the amount of artists I get to interact with and I'll tell you three more top five experiences. So sometimes as a radio host I get invited out to shows and when I can make it out shows you know school schedule life is busy. When I can make it out the shows one of my favorite experiences is watching the bands on stage just have an absolute blast performing just having fun up there. It is so much fun to watch a band that loves what they're doing has fun on stage and is very enthusiastic about their own music and I love I love experiencing that. Another experience that I have really enjoyed so far is actually the funding drive family band and the wrap up party so as you may or may not know CGSW has a funding drive every year. And at the end of that funding drive there's a wrap up party and the CGSW family band what that is is a bunch of musicians from CGSW will get together and practice two songs. To perform I've been very lucky to be involved with that for most of my time here at the station. It's very fun to you know be the one on stage and get to play a little bit of music so that's a lot of fun. And finally of the top five experiences and moments of local singles. It's when people tell me that they listen to the show not even that you know people you know when people are like oh I like your show but when they say hey I've listened to your show or oh I listened to your show the other day. I'm always like what people out there are listening to local singles that's awesome. So very very fun time over the past five years I've learned a whole lot including about you know music scene not to take myself too seriously and just how to have fun on air. So thank you everybody for an amazing five years and here's to many more. We'll get into our last set of the day we've got poets delay and brain bends.
