That is by a band out of Edmonton called Good Information. That is kicking off our very first song of our episode themed all around a certain event happening this week. Before we get into that, I do want to say you are listening to local singles here on CGSW 90.9 FM. My name is Sammy Parker. I go by they them pronouns. And I'm here to lead you through the next hour of all local music. CGSW both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty seven, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Sootina First Nation, and the Stony, Nakota. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, districts five and six. All right, so today is the last day of August, not the last day of August, but the last show of August. And we have got a good one for you today. We just heard from at the very top of our episode there, a band called Good Information, and that is comprised of a bunch of talented musicians from Edmonton. Now, you may be asking, why are you playing a band from Edmonton and not from Calgary? I thought this was local singles. It is local singles. But the reason we did that is because we're actually highlighting a brand new festival that is happening this weekend here in Calgary called Eastern Slopes. And in a little bit, we're going to hear from some of the founders and organizers of the festival talking about Eastern Slopes. So make sure you keep that dial locked, CJSW, 90.9 FM, and we'll get you all of that good information and that good local music. If you want to get in contact with me while I'm here, you can reach me at 403-220-3991. You can also reach out at my Instagram. That's local singles, CJSW. Because this is an Eastern Slopes themed show, all of the artists that you hear today are actually going to be playing at the festival this weekend. That is August 31st. So we're going to kick off our next set with some of the artists that are going to be playing to give you a little bit of a taste of what you can experience this weekend. When we get back, we will hear from some of the organizers/founders and talk a little bit about Eastern Slopes and what makes Eastern Slopes Eastern Slopes. How many times can I say Eastern Slopes in a show? Let's go. Alright, this set is going to be a fun, funky, kind of upbeat one. Hard, again, to put genres to things, but I'll let you guys decide. This is Kate Stevens and Kayla Williams in this next set kicking things off with Love Me by Kate Stevens on CJSW, 90.9 FM. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] That was Kayla Williams with their track Come Close off of their album Retro Delia. Before that, we had a single by Kate Stevens called Love Me. And that comes off of our Eastern Slopes themed episode today. And speaking of Eastern Slopes, I have both the Executive Director and the Artistic Director. Of the festival right here in front of me. Hello, friends. How are you? >> Hi. Doing so well, Sammy. How are you? >> Not too bad. Not too bad. >> Hello. Thanks for having us on. >> Absolutely. So we have Hannah and Tori from Eastern Slopes. And I'm going to be asking a bunch of questions. So first off, I guess the main question, because this is such a brand new festival. How did this festival kind of come into being? >> Well, it's always kind of been something that's been on my radar. I love event planning. I love music. And so getting to know a few people in the music community was really helpful to kind of help curate this group of people that would be awesome to work with. And I just kept thinking, like, wouldn't it be great if we put these all together in one day? And made a big event for it. So about a year ago, we finally started putting the pedal to the metal with it. And we put together a really awesome crew, myself and Tori, and then our colleagues, Megan and Ian as well. And combined, I think we just really have a great skill set to put together a really exciting and fun event. So that's kind of how that came to be. >> Yeah, absolutely. When I was doing a little bit of research into the people behind the event, I'm like, whoa, these are a lot of musicians here. This is great. Musicians creating a music centered arts festival. That is awesome. What is the goal for Eastern Slopes? >> I think the goal, you know, short of anything more tangible in this first year is just if we can have people show up and have a good time and just create a space where people can feel safe and it's inclusive and they can enjoy all of these artists and all the local delicacies we have to offer. I think our team will be really happy about that. >> And I think we also want to really highlight the amazing artists that Calgary has to offer and showcase the incredible talent that we have right here in our backyard. And put it all in one big event. Tori was saying earlier today we were chatting about it and he was saying that a lot of people may have seen some of these artists, but they've never seen this lineup together, this combination of artists. It's a kind of a unique genre blend. So that will be really exciting for us. >> Yeah, absolutely. A little bit again about, oh, sorry about that. My words are just not coming out properly today. Here we go. Here we go. >> It is Wednesday indeed. It is Wednesday, my dudes. Yeah, so why did you call it Eastern Slopes? What is the significance behind that name? >> So yeah, Eastern Slopes refers to the geographical region that we live in in the province. When I was a child, I would go fishing with my dad a lot. And when you get the rules and regulations books, it shows all the different regions in the province. So we fall under ES1, Eastern Slopes 1. It's the eastern side of the Rockies, which extends to the foothills and kind of on the east side of the city where the prairies start to begin. So yeah, I thought that would just be kind of a fun fitting name. I think we live in a really beautiful part of the world. And that sort of just became part of our branding. We liked it. It kind of fit the imagery of the mountains and the foothills. >> I think I was saying before today, too. If you ever drive down Cowboy Trail, that's a very picturesque landscape. And yeah, I just think it's really cool. >> Yeah, absolutely. That's perfect. I was thinking maybe it was kind of a play on not necessarily attached or connected to, but like sled island, you think of skiing sometimes or like sledding. And I'm like, "Oh, Eastern Slopes." That's kind of nice. They're not connected at all, but there's that vision on your mind in this part of the world, I think. >> Exactly. >> They can know those mountains. >> But that's really cool. I really appreciate that because you're just incorporating the natural beauty of our city into it and into a festival that celebrates our city and the musicians. So that's awesome. How would you guys want to see this festival grow into the future? >> Oh, my goodness. Well, I think first things first, let's throw a really great one this weekend. So hopefully lots of people combine and enjoy it. Honestly, that's the dream. But I think we would like to keep this going and make this an annual event really kind of expand on this idea of supporting these local artists while maybe incorporating some other folks from out of town sharing that how great energy with other people. And yeah, I think there's just the sky's the limit. We'd love to make it bigger multiple days. We'll see how it goes, but that's the dream. >> Oh, that's awesome. And how would you, speaking of on the artistic side of things with artists and different genres, how do you want to see it grow musically or what would be the dream musically for Eastern slopes in the future? >> I mean, I think at this point, the goal is just sort of as Hannah was saying, we want to showcase all the local talent I think that we have to offer here. I don't think there's any shortage of that. So I don't think we would run out of artists to curate for years to come if we just stuck with what's local here around Calgary and southern Alberta. I mean, that being said, I think we'll see how this year goes and I don't know if I'm not sure what you can expect down the road. We've already got some pretty big names on the roster. >> Oh, absolutely. Yeah. No, absolutely. I just have to say your branding, your marketing for this has been so good. I've been seeing it for months and just building hype and excitement for it. And people are pretty excited about it. So I have every confidence and assurance in the world that your event this weekend is going to go awesome. >> Yeah. We're pretty psyched. I think it'll be nice weather, too, despite the gray today. >> Exactly. And before I let you guys go, let's actually talk a little bit about the event itself. We talked a lot about the backside of it and the wives. But let's talk about the what's. So when is this happening? What is it all about, kind of thing? And how can people get information about this event? >> Yeah. So Eastern Slopes Music and Arts Festival. It's on Saturday, August 31st at the Bridgest Land Riverside Community Center. It's all day. It's from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. We have 14 artists booked over two stages throughout the event. So there's no shortage of music. It's going to be back to back tunes, back to back good vibes. And then also, we've got some beverage sponsors coming out. We've got White Peaks Teas, part of Big Rock. They'll be serving some local bevies and Last Best. They're another one of our sponsors. We have YYC Food Trucks coming out. >> Yeah. We've got Pilly Pilly's Burgers, Waffles and Chicks Food Truck, and then Ukrainian Fine Foods Food Truck as well. So lots of great food. Lots of great beverages at Sunshine. Hopefully, as I said, will be plenty. But yeah, to get tickets, our website is easternslopesfest.com. But honestly, if you just Google Eastern Slopes Fest, it should pop right up. The show passes readily available. We will have tickets available at the door as well. But if you want to buy online, that's a little bit more of a wallet-friendly option. I do also want to make note that children 12 and under are free. So we would love to see your kids. We want to see them dancing. We want this to be an event that is friendly to all ages. So bring everyone you know. >> Awesome. Well, that's great. Thank you very much for coming on today. And if I have one last question for you, what is one thing that you want your, I guess, guests to walk away with? After experiencing your festival? >> I would love, I think I would like everybody to leave just having a good time and maybe discovering a new artist or hearing a song that they've never heard before. And yeah, I think with the lineup that we've curated for this, as Hannah said before, a lot of these bands you've probably been able to see at other festivals around town in the province, western Canada and beyond. But I don't think they've ever all performed on the same stage before. So I always like bringing together. I think even just within the music and arts community itself, I always love bringing those sort of sub factions of the scene together. Each one of those groups rocks and it's nice to see them all hanging out together. >> I love that. Yeah, the interconnectedness of it all. For sure. Yeah. Alrighty. Well, thank you so much for coming on today. I really appreciate your time. And for all the listeners out there, Saturday, August 31st, that's this Saturday. Don't miss it Eastern Slopes Festival at Bridgeland Riverside Community Center. That's right. Alright. Bridgeland Riverside Community Center. Thanks again. And we are going to play you guys out with the incredible St. Arnote and their track Sophie. Thanks again for listening. That's CJSW 90.9 FM. [MUSIC PLAYING] >> So be I. Got to go. There's another call on the line. You know I promised it would be the last time. I get lost at the station. Don't you know who I've been? At another Golden Palace nurse and habits in a place I used to keep my friend. When I called him yesterday to see if everything's okay. You said no, not really. No, you're not really. Everything in love is leaving. Everybody else has gone. Sleeping in the sun with Sophie. Making things behind me. [MUSIC PLAYING] [MUSIC PLAYING] Sweet Sophie's in the corner with the bookie and they're coming for the alternate. When I called him yesterday to see if everything's okay. You said no, not really.
