We have a Threads account so yeah Movie this week is Ski's movie, it is the beekeeper It is on Prime, came out this year, 2024 It has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes 6.4 on IMDB and a 53 on Metacritic The movie stars Jason Statham As Adam Clay, Emmy Raves, Hampman Yeah, I can do this, Lampman Emmy Raves Lampman as Agent Parker Bobby Naderi as Agent Matt Wiley Josh Hutcherson as Derek Jeremy Irons plays Wallace Felicia Rashad plays Eloise Parker Mini Driver plays Janet Harwood, Mini Driver had a total 30 seconds? Two hours of filming, maybe on one day and got all of her scenes out David Witt plays Mickey Garnett Michael Epp plays Pettis Taylor James plays Lazarus, which was a fucking hilarious character And Gemma Redgrave plays President Danforth Who is the mother of Josh Hutcherson's character, Derek Danforth This movie written by Kurt Wimmer Who if you have listened to all of our movie podcasts You have heard that name before because he also did Equilibrium Because that was another one of Ski's movies I think it was, now yeah In the theme here He also wrote the Thomas Crown Affair Law-Biting Citizen, Salt, Expendables 4 And the total recall and point-break remakes The guy writes a lot of movies Especially action movies as well, so yes Movies sort of along the vein of this movie This movie directed by David Ayer Who also directed End of Watch The first bad suicide squad movie, Fury Which is a rad movie about tanks with Brad Pitt And Street Kings Which we watched, right? Yeah, we did Street Kings, yeah That's not that long ago The Keanu Reeves, yeah, cop Forest Whitaker Forest Whitaker, uh-huh So again, go look back through our catalog You can hear us talk about that one So the crazy thing about this movie You just listed the Kurt Wimmer, David Ayer Jason Statham, right? A lot of people, yeah Those three names off This movie was made To go direct to Amazon And they looked at like what movies were coming out And like, oh There's no action movies coming out In like a three-month walk here So they quickly pivoted to it And pivot with theatrical release It fucked No friends references here Yeah, nope Yeah, I don't even like friends I was hoping you, God, I was like, no one's I'm not gonna say pivot I don't even like friends He's not wrong, but don't do it No, I know, I'm sorry All I can do is apologize It's Americana So, you know, to your point, Ski Like budget for this movie, 40 million And so I know, you know Studios love throwing away money nowadays For no good reason But they released it in theaters And word of mouth spread on this one Like, it became really popular Really quick Probably because it was the only action movie Yeah Out at the time, but it's also not a bad movie So, you know, it's a dumb action movie And people love that shit nowadays So, it made 152.7 million So, this is how David Ayer keeps getting to make movies, guys He puts out some stinkers But also he has some That makes studios a whole bunch of money Every once in a while, so This was fun Yeah, I mean, it, you know, it's In lines with John Wickish Kind of John Wickish, you know Just, he like barely got hurt Until the very, he didn't get touched Until the very end Yeah, but that big guy Yeah, Lazarus, yeah, Lazarus was the only one-legged Lazarus Who also had like a bullet hole through the side of his face That guy was a beast He took zero damage throughout the movie Until that time Until Lazarus, right at the end, yeah So, Jason Statham in this movie A former operative Who lives in the country as a beekeeper His neighbor Who played by Felicia Rashad Is the subject of a fishing scam And loses out on over two million dollars She like ran this charity And the fishing scam guy Very current though I don't think I've ever seen any kind of Like fishing scams involved in movies I enjoy, I enjoy bank capers more than fishing Right, I do too, yes Yeah, generally a good old package Watch out, watch out, IT alert No one answer the unknown email It's a fishing, it's a fishing scam I'm sorry sir, are you using the company issued phone headset? I don't believe you are Way cooler when they stroll into a bank trail on a mask And go from there Automatic, automatic weapons Yeah, it's a good old-fashioned bank caper Yeah, it sort of can't go wrong So, anyway, she gets scammed out of money She kills herself Which was a pretty big Heavy scene at the start of this movie And then he seeks revenge Throughout the rest of the movie Again, dumb action movie Revenge is the main plot Old lady gets fucked with See, was it? Perfect Was it fully revenge or was it, you know, they set it up throughout You know, that's what the beekeepers were They were the They didn't listen, they had no one giving them orders And they would just kind of right the wrongs of the world Kind of thing Now see, that was what they would have you believe Because I think like as the movie's going on He just wants revenge He had one line in it where he's like She was the only person that like ever talked to me like A human or something, something along those lines The only person who ever took care of me Who cared, took care of me, yeah, that's it So he wanted revenge on the people who stole from her And caused her to kill herself So first guy that was Garnet And he pretty much brutalized Garnet Like blew up the building Which was pretty cool scene Like Tim jumping in the playoffs Am I wrong? Am I right? Like tied him up to the truck Drove him off into the water Killed him, there's just good stuff there But then he knew like he had bosses And so Hutcherson was the end result Whereas everybody who was trying to catch him Including, I mean mostly Jeremy Irons He was just making up a story to get people to help him But saying that he was going after the president Because again Hutcherson's mom is the president So Well that's what the FBI chick do If you look, yeah Cause they're like, oh the queen killer That's like something the bees do Sometimes they have to kill the queen To save the hive or something like that Exactly Speaking of Jeremy Irons Some of the pictures, if you look him up He's now hit him in Hank Azaria Or starting to look like the same person They're merging And I feel like Hank Azaria could do a movie as Jeremy Irons And we'd be like, is that Jeremy Irons? Is that? Is it his voice talent too? He could pull off the accent too I mean for, I mean Jeremy Irons kind of known as A bad guy and you know throughout the 90s especially And he was kind of a bad guy in this movie But he wasn't a bad guy He was very calm and didn't do any bad things himself He was just like, well we're fucked The beekeeper is going to kill us And there's nothing we could do I guess I'll try to get some mercenaries together And slow him down That was his only plan, that slowed him down Here's the question Cause he's- Where are the expendables? Yeah, exactly That's what they needed That's basically what he did No it reminded me of his- It reminded me of Sicario Remember Sicario? Remember Sicario Where Brolin brings in all these higher guns That's literally what he did He's like, these are the best people I know In the different- Like they're all retired But these are the best people I know From every office and I'm higher In this genre I love when they go get that retired Hired gun And they're just sitting in a barn Polishing, you know Whatever you call the thing you rut Saddle They're polishing a saddle They turn around Not again Not again One more time I thought I'd never see your face again All right I never thought you'd show your face around here I thought you'd join Panama And then they- They- You son of a bitch Get over here Love it Hired guns Buzzwords Oh yeah Personalities, baby The first thing was Is that iron's got two of them Like the first ones They're like in the office building And he's like Oh you guys aren't going to be able to kill him Like you'll be lucky to slow him down for like 30 seconds But then he brought in like the 18 mercenaries for- Lazarus You bringing the- He bringing the- His crew Yeah So why didn't you just get those guys in the first place? Well, he probably thought like, you know, former Navy SEALs Like oh you guys are pussies He'll team six best of the best Yeah He literally said that though He's like these guys aren't going to be able to kill him I just like I thought his character was hilarious He's just like oh yeah This is the whole time now we're just fucked You're telling him to hunt your sins like- You fucked us up You're dead No one's going to help you You're going to die You idiot He's the last face you're ever going to see So like here's my question about that Because he- Jeremy Irons in this is a- Is the former CIA Director Right? Can you be the CIA Director And British? I don't think you can I don't think you can I do It's not the president It's like you have to be No, I think there's laws against that Is there laws for- Should be I don't know You should Mark me up for xenophobia on that one Yeah There should be laws I'm just- I'm out here asking the questions That's you know, I don't- I don't know He did have like a- They alluded to a former relationship Between he and the president Yeah Yeah, so that was a thing I did like- By the way, like to your point About Irons' character Just not giving a shit And being like- Because the president of the United States Like asks him for a favor She goes- You know, sometimes I still think about you And he's like- Yeah You still think about me And then hangs up Yo! I wanna- I wanna know what Irons' mindset was Going into this role Was- You must have just been like Fuck it Like whatever I'm just gonna- That's- That's how his attitude was in General So he just rolled with it You know, I liked him in this movie Like I thought he was really good I thought the character was good too Because- Like usually that character Does a bunch of over-the-top shit And like to your point, man He totally like played it low key Was super matter of fact about everything Never panicked Like he knew exactly what was gonna happen Every single time Like he tried You know, he was- He's getting paid to do a job So he tried to do his job Realizing that it was probably going to fail And you know I don't know I mean- I thought he did a really good job with that Even at the end there, it's like Usually He would have a gun and like Try to stop staging at the end You have no gun, he's just like Hey man, you just- You don't need to kill her Please don't do that Just don't kill her It's like kill the shit he'll kid Just don't kill her Yeah Exactly I will- I will say I- I know why they did it Because I guarantee Whimmer and Ayer have plans For probably a second beekeeper movie With statham I thought it would have been better Because they- They talked about a lot like Oh, he will throw his life away To for the greater good Like they- They kind of beat you to death with that They- So I thought they should have Killed off Let's stay to die at the end And then if they want to continue- Just bring someone else And it was a different beekeeper It's like you could have- You could have the series go forever Just with new people Liam Neeson up next Yeah, whoever Whoever Yeah, he's like- It's like Doctor Who, right? You just- I will pollinate Yeah I will pollinate you I will pollinate you I will pollinate you I will pollinate you I will pollinate you I will pollinate you Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third enemy of Queen Kayla Third new hive I- You're on record saying that you think everybody should die in movies Yeah, so- Right, they should So I- I think it probably would have been a cool ending If they found a cool way to do it Um, I agree with you Like, because he got- He did get stabbed in the gut Like, he- He could have killed the kid Got out of there The chick doesn't shoot him in He just like walks into the ocean And dies Yeah Sorry, that reminded me of the- The current beekeeper Who came after him in this movie And how fucking ridiculous that was It could be- See, exactly It could be anyone as a beekeeper It doesn't matter Yeah, that- That whole sequence was just fucking silly Like, like, her- Her character was dumb Uh, I like- I like the Gatling gun on the back of the truck Uh, you know, don't get her on The minigun, sorry, yeah, my bet, my bet Um, but goddamn it Like, what was the purpose of that? She's no Jesse the body Ventura Just, like, holding one and spraying it And it amounted to them They could have done better, I think With that character It could have been a lot better Here, so here's my question also About the beekeepers It's like- The CIA director, like, doesn't know about them Like, it's such a, like, hidden, like, secret thing You think they would be, like, a little, like- Well, no, she- Not out in the open and, like, you know, a little, like, oh Like, mini driver- Or mini driver's character knew about them She did, yeah, but- Jeremy, I didn't know, like, the people Oh, yeah, who it was, or whatever, yeah Like, the second- The second in command to her Definitely didn't know No Um, but it's like, you're there to save the world Like, where no one, like, knows who you are Don't you want to, like, do it, like, incognito? Like, the other, the current beekeepers Like, you're using- You're spraying a minigun And you're dressed ridiculous And you're yelling, it's, like- That whole, again, like, that whole character Didn't make sense For what they had established a beekeeper is 'Cause the- 'Cause beekeepers, like, the beekeeper character Is essentially, like, has- Is carte blanche, right? Like, nobody tells the beekeeper what to do They know what to do And they just do it So you can't have this, like, loose cannon As the beekeeper, right? And who the hell makes them the beekeeper? Like, that wasn't explained either, so Maybe that's gonna be beekeeper supremacy or something I guess they got a little beekeeper prequel coming I mean, this- This isn't the end of this series, I'll tell you that I hope not It made too much money I hope not, it was fucking fun The worry is- Like, I want lots more, like, dumb action movies with good budgets This is what I want Yeah, give me more of this I'm simple How many more years does state them have to be that karate action guy? I mean, he's like in his mid-fifties I mean, he's still obviously in great shape and stuff But it's- What age do you hit to where, like, you can't be that guy? Like, Stallone even in, like, the- Expendables movies Yeah He's not like- He lets everyone else do everything He just shoots his little, like, six-shooter And that's kind of it Statham is- Statham is 57 Yeah, he's old Statham will pivot into the silent assassin Liam Deeson is 72 And he's still making these type of flicks So he will- But Statham's known for his, like, over the top, like- I know, I know, I'm saying He will eventually- He's got 10 more years Easy in him And then he will start to just kind of be the- The more silent assassin He doesn't really have anything else other than being, like, the badass action guy I mean- What else is he in? At cranks? The crink movies? He was in- He was in- He was in movies? Yeah, he was in that- Hi, Richie Like, well, revolver movie that was really good The guy- Guy Richie movie where he, like, doesn't really do any action at all It's- It's actually pretty good He's got, like, 10 more years of knife fights left in him Yeah And then after that, he transitions in to Jeremy Irons Or Hank Azaria Or Hank Azaria Who's to say? Hank Azaria transitions in to him Obviously Alright, so yeah, so maybe we got three more beekeeper movies left Maybe three No No Maybe he's got 10 years Yeah Did you, did you, like, picture the reality of, like, the David Ayer beekeeper franchise? Did you guys, did you guys think John Wick was gonna spin off four of them? So it's a lot- Yeah It could, as long as it makes money, that's all that matters We're gonna get a nobody, too Yes, I believe- No Yes, I believe it is in the works No, it's- It can't be Fuck yeah Wow This is that's the Odin Kirk one, right? Yep Yep I mean, I'm all for it I just didn't think he would be for it That was- I thought he made that as kind of a spoof to be like, "Look, I'm an old guy And now all we do is put old guys and we put them up" The heart attack might have slowed him down a little bit, but I think we're pretty sure it's in the work He worked his ass off for that movie Like he got in like really good shape And then had a heart attack, it was really bizarre That is funny that you're saying like, "Ode to Kirk" Like, "Oh, the old guy that does it" Who is the young guys that would- They're all these action movies are all old guys, cage That's- It's all old guys now There's no young one that people like do these They're all too good looking now, Glenn Powell That's the problem, you gotta be a little grizzled looking Glenn Powell or whatever his name is He's way too good looking Way too pretty, you can't do it Yeah, the young action dudes are all like in the foreign flicks Like the guy's from the raid and stuff, you know, like Yeah, it's a good point He's gonna say Hemsworth, but yeah, Hemsworth's too good looking too And too, he's too jacked too Uh, who's the Harry Potter guy, Daniel? Radcliffe? Radcliffe could do it Radcliffe could do it Yeah, there we go, all right I'm on board with- God, I'm on board with that I'm not saying he's the ugly guy, I'm just saying He's awesome Like he's awesome Yeah, did you see guns at Kimbo? Yes He's awesome It's awesome Yeah Give me more action than- We thought we were gonna get him as like a Wolverine in the Deadpool movie And it didn't happen Like a lot of people were like legit disappointed that that didn't happen Because he would be a badass Wolverine Uh, a little short Hollywood needs to stop shaming ugly guys So we could have more action stars Amen We need more- We need more salons in shorts and eggers And- and grillows And grillows I got physically upset watching twisters I was like Glenn Powell Yeah, he's just Fuck, he's too good looking He's too- too beautiful He's too- And he's in a new movie where he's You know, playing in Oregon, duck football Chad Powell? Yeah What are we doing, man? What are we doing? All right, I wrote down three quotes from this movie 'Cause they were like Back to back to back And I knew Kurt Wimmer Had just like It was- it was A situation where Kurt Wimmer was like writing this movie And he's like Oh, fucking nailed it Walked away from the computer He's like, oh yeah This is perfect And he sits downstairs writing again Oh my god, I did it again I did it again And he did that one more time after that So here we go Goddamn right, I'm a problem He's like, you're a problem, aren't you? Goddamn right, I'm a problem Oh, that's so good Such a good line He might have had that line And built this entire movie Around that line I could see that Okay, the second one here It has to do with the hive So sometimes when the hive Is out of balance You have to kill the queen That's a fucking great line It's a great line in the beekeeper And the queen is the president Goddamn wimmer All right, third one You have laws for these things Until they fail Then you have me Oh Classic 80s and 90s Like one liners right there Give me a fucking towel Jesus, man Fuck wimmer Just settle down, dude Like we got to finish the movie You have laws for things Until they fail Then you have me You're a problem line I just pictured that in every boss In cop movie ever Like Wahlberg's probably said that line About five times already Like in real life In real life If I said I'm a problem That's what he was saying When he wasn't Wahlberg saying He would have stopped 9/11 Because he would have taken out the Terrorists on the plane That would have been his line on the plane God I love your ass so confident It's a boss of guys It's just It's fucking insane, man He's like 5/6 You know He's jacked Don't get me wrong But he's losing to a box cutter Those are sharp, man Wahlberg saying He would have stopped 9/11 And Steven A Smith saying He would have gotten OJ Simpson prosecuted My two of my most favorite Like irrational confidence When they're totally serious lines Ever Just so good So good I like the way this movie ended too Like the uh Because it ramped up So like you can't have all of this shit Like setting up uh Sort of like You know a failure of a A last scene or whatever So he fights so many guys Like stairwell So many guys Because it starts There's like a hallway scene Where he fights a bunch of secret service guys Then he goes up the stairs And literally fights like 30 guys on a stairwell Like I don't know how that many people Were on the stairwell He would have stopped The second tower from falling Yep Mm-hmm He could have He could Where Yeah It was stable By the way There's the bigger question Where was the beekeeper on the island? Must have been off doing something else It's only explanation No, I don't know But they did a very good And the conscientious job of The guys that they let statham kill And then the ones that he just like hurt Like all the secret service guys They just got hurt Yep All the mercenary guys Every one of them got killed Every single one got a gunshot to the head Yep The odd all secret service dudes He just beat up and like threw off the stairwell He threw like five guys off the stairwell It just like By the way, another thing in this movie That I love in action movies Is one guy's punch helmets Mm-hmm He did that so many times His punch and helmets And you know It knocked the other guy out Instead of hurting his hand Like a motherfucker These are secret service helmets They're hard Like they're bulletproof You know That is such a good like Bitch in these types of movies Yeah Every year in like Fucking baseball A reliever punches a gator Like nine relievers punch a gatorade cooler Break your hand And they're out for four months These guys Just They repeatedly like hitting his elbow on a helmet And it's fine Like it doesn't shatter Even hockey players know If you're gonna have a scrap with someone You each take your helmet off Because no one wants to break your hands Exactly You're asking for it Um so anyway He fights his way up the stairwell And then gets the Lazarus And Lazarus again So I don't know how he lost the leg Was he To a beekeeper A different giver He killed him Right Yeah Okay So he had killed a beekeeper Lost his leg in the fight So he's got a Got a prosthetic leg Statham shoots him in the side of the face So you think he's dead But he's not He just has literally a hole in his In his cheek Like a smoking hole in the side of his face And he Meets him up stairs with a pretty cool hallway scene Which you know action movie Gotta have the hallway scene right But it's like glass doors And so they're able to throw each other into the glass It's like kind of a cool kind of a cool setup So that fight was cool Because it was a rad knife fight He ends up like After a lot of effort Killing Lazarus And that was the boss fight right Because nobody else is Actually gonna be a competition for him fighting Yeah Because it was just irons with no weapon Just trying to talk him down And then Hutcherson did have a gun Against his mom's head Yeah So then he so then he goes in the room Hutcherson shoots the second in command CIA director guy Which was crazy And then At the end puts the gun to his mom's head And says fuck it And then that's when Statham kills him Which the only thing that doesn't make sense is Because to what they told him is like Oh he's coming to kill your mom It's like so why would he care if If he has a gun to her head He's fine with her dying Well to be fair He had done a lot of cocaine He was Yeah Leading up to that So Hey You don't see You don't see that in action movies anymore Bad guy that just does a lot of blow Yeah I mean And like And like openly with his mom Who is the president Like She just walks in She's like She's like doing blow on your dad's desk Gorilla cool There is a joke to be made about President's kid is doing cocaine Yeah it kind of fits actually Yeah Yeah Kind of fits Most of them don't fund the campaign With a legal fishing scam money But you know They mostly do cocaine I will say The most believable thing Throughout this whole movie Was that Someone got a hold of like Government's tracking To use as a fishing scam Yeah that's So that's what Hutcherson's character did He got a hold of CIA technology And created Used it to Create like To this huge targeting fishing Company Yeah Turned into like a billion dollar industry basically So The only thing I have Question is All their little like call centers It's so very like Wolf of Wall Street It is Like This ain't the early 2000 Like late 80s to early 2000s They don't have those anymore With that like Get everyone going like Oh yeah The music Everyone's pumped up And Yeah And an absolute Bullshit That the intelligence agencies Didn't know What that this company existed Absolute bullshit As if like nobody vetted The president's son And like the company runs At all Like because all you got to do Is go to one of the buildings And just Walk in And you can see what the company is They're not hiding It's insane But whatever It made for a Made for a few good Dumb action scenes And so It made for just some good Statham lines Because he's just so calm and collected Like dumping gas just on people As he's just walking around I did like that Because they did jump right into it Mm-hmm Like as soon as Felicia Rashad's character died You had to wait like maybe Two minutes of screen time Until he was at the building With the gas can. Made a call Found out where to go With there Was there with gasoline? Do you guys know who you work for? And then Knocks him out Burnes the place to the ground Good stuff Good stuff Another classic uh Gasoline I don't know if it would cause an explosion like that though What? It would not It got all the hardware From a call center Maybe I don't know But Well he did have like uh He had some like syntax on her Yeah, yeah, yeah But that exploded when the next person Called or whatever Yeah, which was a nice touch I feel You know Wait, wait For the explosion until the next person Little risky calls Little risky therefore I mean Mm-hmm Billion dollar It wasn't coming in like a minute or two Billion dollar office They're getting a lot of calls, right? Like isn't that the point? Yeah All right I think we should grade this thing Yeah Uh Sit out of this week Yeah Five Five maybe Okay All right In honor of four more beekeepers Yeah, I'm into that All right Sit The beekeeper quint- Chilagie Is that a thing? Quint- quint- Is it quint? Cinquology Cinquok? Yeah, all right We're smart All right Others All right, ski, it's your movie, go Since There's gonna be more I gotta knock it down a little bit Oh All right, guys I gotta give the fourth one a five So I'm gonna give it a 4.5 In anticipation It will be going up with each one I love you Knock it down Thanks to hypothetical sequels Hey, it's no hypothetical It's happening for sure There's no way it's not Book it Wow, 4.5 It was only- If it was just missing like a gratuitous titty bar scene Where he killed some guys And they showed some titties To be in just the ultimate classic 80s, 90s action Needed to rip out a throat Yeah, art Yep Yeah I'll- I will downgrade it Pretty, I guess kind of a lot To that I'll give it a 3.85 Just because I don't like how Calm statham is and everything It's always calm Always calm Except for crink Because he has to- Well, yeah For obvious reasons We're having an Amy Smart I had a good question I think after he fucked her at the Horse Track She made her career And it went down Was that it? Yeah That's rough Um I'm gonna give this a 4.25 Ooh I think um I think the daughter Like was really bad Yeah, she wasn't great She was like- She was really the only character Who like overacted And over did every single line And was like a big weak point For me in this movie Like I like- I like to her interactions With her partner Throughout the movie and stuff I thought the partner was like Good comic relief Yeah Um but I don't know She- She really didn't do it for me It was kind of a- Surprising 'Cause she was the only kind of non-big name I mean They got mini driver to be in there for 30 seconds You think they could Yeah Got some a little better Mini driver Live in the dream, man Oh yeah Like going there for a day But she made a million dollars That's a $850,000 Good work if you can get it
Braga, King, and Ski talk about The Beekeeper, a movie about a former operative who seeks out revenge when his landlady falls victim to a phishing scam. It's classic Jason Statham with Jeremy Irons trying to stop him. It took the world by storm, but is it any good? Listen!
