August September is right around the corner and I listen just relax out there no need to panic everything is fine I promise you everything is going to be okay happy national sports day to my friends my big day it's a huge day for one of us yes we've got I'm woodsy by the way that's Paul Rindel he is the executive producer of the show morning Paulie good morning Benjamin Higgins national sports day or as you call it just Thursday absolutely good morning good morning to you just promised something that you can't promise sure I can't know you can't I can't you can't everything's gonna be okay no you can't promise I absolutely can't you're gonna be fine son's gonna rise tomorrow you're gonna be good confident the sun's gonna rise yeah everything's gonna be okay I'm also confident that the pot raise are gonna be fine I can't promise it to anybody I will I'll put it on record they're already they're already better than we thought that they would be so if you want to look at it like that we're in good shape that only means we can be more disappointed in the end no I mean I'm I'm very impressed still even in a loss last night you know there wasn't I didn't think there was anything alarming about the loss no I'm not super alarmed alarm isn't the word but it's a little jarring to see Robert Suarez blow a lead it's jarring to see this team they never had a lead it was a tight blow game yeah it's jarring it's jarring to see this team lose right now because they have been playing so well they have been coming through in those moments 162 of them man it's not gonna happen ever no one's gonna run the table but I just I it's hard for me to rip this team right now it just is sorry and if that's not being objective so I yeah fine I am what I am I am I love this team they've given me a million reasons to love them I'm not gonna panic today I will panic though about a text exchange that we had last night now this is a multi-layered there's a multi layers of this so oftentimes we have a show thread you guys know it just says Ben and Paul we don't even we don't call it's not named Ben and Woods or anything like that should our text thread haven't probably we probably need something you know Ben and would show the core three three three we have two threads we have one with Adam oh we have one with Adam to yes and then the other one that's true that we use after Adam the funny part is when of course we have the thread with Adam but then the sub thread commenting on the thread with Adam yes we have us cutting him out he's usually me going is he out of his mind it's usually what it is it's usually Adam sending a link to something that we've seen covered yeah talked about it two weeks ago right and then we go to the other thread without Adam and I hit I hit him with the I hit you guys with the he's he out of his mind we just did this today right here on Ben and Woods 97 3 the fans 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. he should listen you should so I you know if we we text about the game that's going on so there's nothing I'm Paulie and I are text in we're texting some ideas for the show Ben is radio silent so this is pretty funny I text Paul I go is he dead and Paul right so there's even a sub thread with just the two of you yeah just like there's a sub thread between you two Paul and I almost never text if you if we text you see it Paulie and I unless there's something very unusual like we're pulling that prank on you or something there is there's not a lot of communication just between me and Paul and like Woods calls me three to four times a day correct we get all of our occasionally Ben's and I text it's almost usually golf golf related of some sort and Paul doesn't need to see that if Ben ever called me I would assume somebody's dead somebody died yeah yeah what's just not called Paul maybe twice ever six years so Paulie's woods requires just a little bit more I'd maybe yeah three times a year yeah talk to woods but Paulie isn't out he's a freakin genius I go is he dead where is he and Paul goes I swear to God Paul goes ask him what time the Aztecs play on Saturday so I can you not I write Ben what time do the Aztecs play on Saturday four seconds later dot dot dot dot five p.m. and I said that was a proof of life text by the way this dude looking at his phone going no no me and well it's on the thread had been texting for hours hours nothing from that on every name every show every single time yes yes I see them we thought you died I thought you were dead I was just doing my evening watching the game picking up dinner and then that was what was going on so I said to him he goes I tweeted about Higgie I'm off tonight which I didn't know he said I just picked up Thai food for dinner I said oh in my mind I said well that sounds good and then I looked at my clock and it on the phone and it said 730 p.m. I had just put bow and tailor down I was in my bed under the covers and I go wait a minute I go wait you're just now eating he says yet this is what this guy says I he was pissy he goes yes we are adults and I went no normal adult eats at effing 730 I understand you have to eat earlier with smaller children sure but there's no reason that I have to eat dinner at five o'clock okay how about six who eats at seven what are you European you're Spanish now so it just makes more sense to eat later in the evening I stay up later than you that's true you were off yes but I'm probably still not gonna go to sleep until close to 11 so if I eat too early like it's 6 I'm just gonna be hungry again at 930 or 10 so we are adults I eat a later dinner like people in Italy or comments or Spain we are adults and I went that's number one it's the sassiest he's ever been I was like damn like the bitchiest and sassiest he's ever been I go I touched a nerve here adults yes 730 we are adults I understand that some people eat earlier want to go to bed earlier but that is usually because you have children or you have a lack of patience to be able to wait until later to eat dinner right I mean it's I get hungry like I'm at 430 I'm starving I'm also getting hungry but if I waited out a little bit longer I can continue to look forward to my dinner and then I have my dinner so they actually say though it's better to go to bed on an empty stomach then which I still will you will still be three hours between when I eat and when I probably end up going to bed that's the difference you know if I eat at 5 I've got six hours before I'm going to bed but hold on you had a night off you had a night off you could have gone and slept like a normal gone about at 9 game was over at 8 you know he's telling you have to step till 11 which is insane when you host a morning when you when you stamp until 11 or every single day you can't just simply one day go to bed at 8 30 at 4 o'clock in the morning most sometimes 3 today to for this gig on a Saturday or Sunday if I can't sleep in I'm allowed to sleep in a little bit more but can you go to bed earlier like you've no idea if you had no if you had no one around what you usually go to bed around 8 to 9 in bed by like 8 alright if you had no kids and no Hannah they were out of town would you go to bed at 6 because you had a chance to go bit of bed earlier you could well okay off night for the potter a's yeah bro 1000% I would you dinner at bed at 6 I would eat dinner at 4 I would take my ambient at 5 and I would handle some business then I would fall asleep by 6 or 6 30 and I wouldn't even think twice we have a we have a member stream tonight so be a little bit busy tonight oh no if there were no member stream and the potter is playing 11 15 I'd be asleep by 8 if yeah if I didn't have my course when I work I never eat dinner until after I'm done at least with my six with your six so usually it's 6 45 7 7 15 somewhere in there when I eat dinner and probably do it after the member stream tonight so I think it's fine 7 30 I don't think I appreciated the we are adults comments I think that I said is he want to fight is he looking is he spoiling for one today but to answer your question yeah easily if if Hannah's like I'm taking the kids for a week and the potter it was the off-season bro 6 30 your boy is dead asleep I mean as sacked out as you can a human could be now when daily I told Hannah last night I go I am praying that Wednesday light savings again it'll as end in like November okay that's that we have to wait that long yeah well it's getting you know the little bit darker a little earlier which is great which November third I can't believe I'm gonna wait that long because those kids at that time they're going to bed at 4 30 p.m. and I'm going to bed at 6 30 p.m. baseball season will be over and that's it I'm gonna get my rest I guess in the winter but yeah I didn't like that sassy text from you last night Benjamin we are adults yeah European adults yeah I don't know how they do it over there they're like I will say when we went to Italy waiting until after 8 to go out to eat right that was even a little late for me we went when we went to we have a reservation at 7 no no no no yes but you're gonna be the only person at the restaurant you do great great can you imagine when we went to Paris we did the same thing it was like I was like I'm starved and you have to get on their clock in their schedule so you finally do that and then you're like it's dinner time and it's one we're eating dinner I don't know what to tell you if we have to have a sandwich or something like it is not it's not easy I don't know how they do it and the other thing they do is their dinners are like three hours long they just sit and just rot there and I don't operate that way I had many say that's the way I can I'll be 34 in a few weeks when I was like 21 22 like we would start the night at like 10 p.m. sure like you would go out and go to somebody's house at 9 or 10 p.m. we live at that to Dallas at 11 yeah and then you're at the bars around 11 11 30 I'm like there's no chance there's zero chance I had even if I wanted to go out and blow off some steam like how does a 630 sound for about 430 can you get off a little early we'll go for 30 happy hour let's get plowed and then I'll be passed out by nine like that's the best way to do it I've said it many times you guys know I love live music and concerts I need these older bands to start accommodating us older folk more and say we're playing at seven or six we're taking the stage and the Rolling Stones should not be hitting the stage at 11 p.m. there's no way there's just no chair at fantasy camp when we went to explicit we got there what around six thirty seven six thirty seven definitely wasn't prime time yet well again that's kind of what you want you want to be the place to ourselves the best service but anyway well I I mean I'm also an adult but I do have small kids you got to get them fed and in the shower and all that stuff and and have them chilling out because I the thought of sitting down for dinner at 7 30 I just feel like once your kids are grown you're gonna want to push that back a little bit to it I think I'm gonna push civilized out I think I'm gonna push my bedtime up once I'm older and grow but anyway we digress we've got a great show for you a little 16 year old Bo is gonna have a 5 p.m. bedtime that kid's curfew is gonna be 8 45 I need you home by 8 45 senior in high school why well because I gotta get up and go to work tomorrow yeah like I'm gonna be doing this in 10 years but at any rate we have a very special surprise today we do we will share with you what that surprise guest will be in our menu setting that is coming up next we'll let you know what's coming up on the program today I will say a little extra Ben and Woods on a Thursday no round table today but we will be going until 10 15 and the eco water so Cal Padre's pregame show as the Padres wrap up their four-game series in St. Louis so 15 minutes down four hours to go if Ben and Woods on a throwback Thursday check traffic with Kelly Danik and then off we go on San Diego's number one sports station 97 3 the fan it's our 97 3 the right price your next beautiful spaces at floor and decor floor and decor unbeatable prices unmatched in stock selection I'm only about 13 hours away from dinner tonight so that's good woods is only about 11 hours from dinner tonight scrumptious we count it down and we're about four hours or five hours from Ponderay's baseball against the St. Louis Cardinals we've got some time to fill between now and then here is how we plan to fill it obviously we will talk about last night's game our ponterays wrap up for three walk-off loss to the St. Louis Cardinals talk about Joe Musgrove's performance and obviously woods we will get into the decision of jerks and pro far not Mike Schilt or the coaching staff but the decision by jerks and pro far to lay down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the ninth inning to move the runner a pinch runner in that case Tyler wave to third base with one out the decision that ultimately did not work out for the San Diego Padres I don't know why I bring that up in front of you at this moment maybe it's because you've had strong opinions about sacrifice bunts in the past let's just save it just save it yeah for now think I will yeah yeah you can think on how you want to phrase things to diplomatically you know perhaps walk before you get a little do a little breath work perhaps we know you you like jerks and pro far loved loving guys a monster like one of the most clutch hitters in the seventh inning and beyond all seasons sometimes you disagree with people you love where is he what is uh he must he was at the bottom of the line of last night oh no it wasn't that in second yeah he usually is but we will discuss how the ninth inning played out last night we'll get the highlights from Jesse and Tony in last night's game which was yeah a little disappointing ending for your San Diego Padres coming up in our seven o'clock hour we've got our regular features of real or fake on a throwback Thursday if you don't know musical trivia this is your opportunity to qualify for a trip to Las Vegas you don't have to go head to head against woods it's just you against the the real or fake category don't do this at 7 20 Paulies got some throwback clips for us in our 730 segment today including a very a very early clip one of our shows history feel like we do this every three weeks we don't we do it every August yeah oh 2020 oh my god never been so mad in my whole life ever I was more mad about this than I was the bond coming up in the second half of the program we're gonna have to play a little bit flexible because we have not one but two guests coming up in the eight o'clock hour perhaps nine o'clock hour we'll see you know Sarah's will join us as he always does for his smart baseball segment you know from the athletic which is a TBD because of our other guest pod race shortstop Mason McCoy is going to join us pretty much as soon as they get to the ballpark for the for pregame warm-ups and everything but they didn't have an exact figure around 830 830 is is what we've kind of got circled right now so we may have to break early late whatever to get Mason McCoy on with us yeah the plan is 830 now I'm gonna have to learn a little bit about Mason McCoy I've already Wikipediaed him just to see a couple of factoids like you know he went to the University of Iowa from Joliet Illinois Iowa Hawkeye from Peoria Illinois Peoria munch munch I had this combo before you got here he is probably very familiar with corn and all of its inner workings if you went to Iowa a lot of corn there he is he's filled a nice role while Hassan Kim has been on the injured list probably though that a temporary role and he's got to imagine it's you know not gonna last forever and when guys come back there's gonna be a roster crunch and he may not be around for you know the playoff stretch of the postseason but he is he is he's don't start the conversation like that please right please don't Mason you know there's a good chance you get cancer somebody I will I'm just saying my point is it's still an important role though and its Padres go on and you know win their first-ever World Series he'll be very worthy of a ring 100% for what he is contributed now just over the last week or so with the Padres I probably keep him on the roster his glove is magnificent and the play he made last night up the middle I mean in on Zander's side of the field essentially was fantastic which is somewhat expected that's why they brought him up but not expected is is how often he's gotten on base in his time with the San Diego Padres that's been a pleasant little bonus of Mason McCoy and has earned him basically a spot in the everyday lineup for the past five or six days he's been in there and he's earned some faith it seems like from Mike Schilt and the coaching staff so we will chat and get to know Mason McCoy coming up at 830 this morning and then we'll stretch it out with a Rondel report and get you to Sammy Levitt's eco water so-called pregame show at 10 15 as the Padres go for the series win over the St. Louis card he's actually wrote it out for you if you want to read it verbatim from the chat said hey Mason chances you're gonna get DFA when us on Kim comes back thoughts yeah I mean obviously to the back of his mind I'm I'm curious as to I look did you see his line before he got to the Padres and he was with Toronto Paulie and I were were kicking this around this morning of how this line actually came to be he when he was he had called up for with the Blue Jays last year last year he had a shit was injured and they brought him up so he had six games he had one played appearance one at bat one strikeout scored two runs oh for one oh for one two runs scored two runs scored no walks no hit by pitches there's a pinch runner many times that's what we thought pinch runner and you get credit yeah you're gonna get the credit for that you touch the plate to score the run see it's different adult league so yeah what a what a what an odd kind of start to to his career I mean he's one played appearance away from from being moonlight Graham you know what I mean and then the Padres call him up and I've certainly loved I've loved what he's brought to the team solidifying the shortstop role with Kimmy being out has made some really good plays and mostly Benny he's just he's made the the plays he needed to make with a couple extras sprinkled in there he turns really he's got the the turn down he's really really good in that respect you feel pretty confident these days when the ball goes to the left side of the infield and Manny was off his ass defensively last night I've I mean what do you what else can you say ridiculous he's absolutely ridiculous the double play he turned on the short hop the foul ball catch that he made the one down line I mean he was just to like six the same plays has been out of his mind with the glove so yeah man it's last night was a bit of a tough one to stomach but it's gonna happen you know you just need Bobby Suarez you need Bobby Suarez who has he scuffled a little bit lately giving up some runs which is uncharacteristic of him and maybe needs a little bit of a breather but it's tough because you can't really afford to drop games right now we saw what happened with Arizona and LA last night so yeah kind of right back to where we started I saw a ton and we can discuss this as well on my timeline of Robert Suarez is washed yeah just I mean panic about Robert Suarez now I have his numbers been as locked down as they were in the first half of the season no but at the same time he certainly hasn't been bad in the second half of the year no other teams have made some contact after the contact is made it's a lot of love involved in baseball once the contact is made the ball hits the ground and starts rolling a lot of times it goes at someone occasionally it doesn't and it doesn't often happen that three times in a row you make okay contact and the ball finds holes or a little bit of outfield grass yeah that's what happened to Robert Suarez in the ninth inning we can discuss that coming up I kind of did the math on the expected batting average of what he gave up he really didn't give up much last night it just happened to be in the right for the right place well and again but though I will say this to the to the doomer I don't think he's washed at all by any stretch his they're not they're not whiffing off of him like they were they're just not as with with right his way down you know his k-rate is down Benny when you have a closer and we saw a really really good one on the other side last night Ryan Hellsley Ryan Hellsley gets a ton of swing and miss which is kind of what you need of the night having a contact a guy that's maybe slipping a little bit because I don't know maybe he's tired he's had over his innings you know pitched in his career all of that or he's sure I think he's just six short of it of what he threw last year yeah it's a little bit of a cause for concern but I have no doubts if they're gonna get him back on the right track the velocity isn't the velocity still 100 101 yep so what's different I don't know I assume yeah I mean the pitch mitts in the first half of the season was non-existent yeah he went a month without throwing anything but a fast ball but but again like guys make adjustments in the big leagues and they're not barreling as fastball right oh yeah right I mean my point here is the job of a pitcher yes you'd love to get some swing and miss and strikeouts but ultimately you're hoping either to get a ground ball or soft contact in the air yep and Roberts were has got three of those in a row two of them are ground balls one of them was soft contact in the air that's a that's a win for the pitcher after it leaves the bat he can't do anything about it but his job is either to strike a guy out get a ground ball or get soft contact in the air and that's all he gave up last night yep so that's not the night to panic about Robert Suarez now if he gives up gapping line drives and home runs and there's been a couple of those in the second half but not that many then you start wondering okay what's going on what's wrong but Robert Suarez won his battles last night had five of them he won all of them he lost the game but he won his individual battles as a pitcher getting what you're supposed to get strikeout ground ball we contact in the air sure that's all that that's all the Cardinals got off of him yesterday yeah for sure but sometimes that's enough it's yeah but you know as then just points five of his last eight outings he's given up a run he's he's there is a little bit of a scuffle but it's certainly not anything to to should we but that could also just be the normal flow of a season of a season when you know so we'll talk about that coming up we've got our pot raise wrap up in our next segment we'll take a quick break come back with those highlights and more with Benewoods on San Diego's number one sports station 97 3 the fan baseball coverage a 97 3 the fan is presented by T-Mobile switch to T-Mobile you can get tons of benefits and still save on every plan versus AT&T and Verizon use their savings calculator to find out how at T-Mobile.com slash switch all right we kind of previewed a little bit of the conversation about last night's game already let's get into it though our pot raise wrap up all the highlights coming up right after traffic here on 97 3 the fan it's a shame if they lose oh a shame indeed it's a complete crap I did not like that here are the low lights from yesterday's game are you kidding me it's the Padres wrap-up presented by humble casino with thrilling slots and tables and all the best rewards Hamul casino has all the fun you're looking for Hamul casino fun above all else we'll give it 16 minutes of salt and then we'll you know get back on the bump and figure it out it's not your fault ahead here three and oh here's the pit for moment a swinging and a ground ball up the middle into center field and a base it arises being waved at third base new parts throw will go to third the tag is not in time RBI single Manny Machado Kronenworth able to go first to third and a Padres take a one nothing lead here in the first run is on the corners one out for Bogart's Machado run three two pitch swung on and missed throw down his high into center field and Kronenworth's gonna come in and score I has airmailed his throw up to second base and San Diego ahead two to nothing here in the first was barely leading off the back and his pitch hit in the air to left center field and deep throw far back into the gap not going to be able to get there bounces at the base of the wall Durbson plays it well burleson is scored are not all stop at third base and RBI double for Lucan Baker our goals are on the board it's two to one all in a strike Donovan swing since it's sharply up the middle McCoy dives has it gets up throws to first in time beautifully done all right auto comes in to score the tying run but McCoy a kept Baker from being able to score and be able to collect the second out of the inning one and a must grow of delivers and Goldschmidt laces it into center field that's a base hit that's gonna give the Cardinals a lead Baker comes into score St. Louis in front for the first time tonight it's three to two all in two strikes pitch to a gash yoga launched in the air down the left field line fam is back towards the corner he's looking up it's gonna go game tying Homer Kylie gash yoga with two outs here in the eighth he is set he is ready payoff pitch on the way Donovan swings pops it up foul ground third baseline Machado sprinting over near the dugout railing slides and he makes the catch another huge and unbelievable defensive play by Manny Machado and the one one are not a ground ball up the middle in the center field in the base hit win is racing around third Merrill comes up firing no chance walkoff RBI single for are not a Mason wins scores and the Cardinals win four to three two out body on you know win what he's done all series two strikes hit by the way Scott to a tough and bad on him you know found some grass we're trying to be careful to know when and I'm just got a ball that you could you know put through the infield and that is the upon race three game winning streak with the four three win by the Saint Louis Cardinals who by the way are a 500 team I mean they tend to win every other game so you know you took the first two sweeping would have been great but it's probably not your realistic option on the road if they get three out of four you've done a great job in this series and Joe Musgrove came out I gave up the leadoff single yesterday Mason when but then ended up needing only four pitches to get through the first inning thanks to a sensational double play that Manny started and you know Joe just breezed through the first three innings I mean he was 17 pitches or so so efficient and you're thinking okay Joe is gonna go deep in this game and looking sharp just like he did on Friday against the Mets and then he just ran into some trouble in that one ending the fourth inning some of it was just ground balls he did give up that you know ringing double from Luke and Baker was probably kind of the big the big blow in that inning Paul Goldschmidt has been a problem yeah series you know he was coming into the series pretty cold and as he always plays well against Padres always did in Arizona and is carrying that home with Mike seven hits now in the three games of this series including that big RBI go ahead single to cap the three run fourth inning with Padres stabilized Joe came back out give him a couple more bullpen gave a couple more shutout innings and eventually the Padres did what the Padres do they came up with a big hit to tie the game in the eighth inning this time it was not Jackson Merrill it was Kyle Higashiyoka who's had his fair share of big home runs for the Padres this season did the old Higgie Bank deposit down the left field line it's his specialty for his 16th of the season 16 homers for this kid and the Padres tie it up three three so they go to the top of the ninth and they're facing one of the nastier relief pitchers in baseball Louisa rise like ridiculous bat control cricket style double on a ball that was basically in the dirt of the dirt I mean it's off the dirt you're not even mad if you're right I mean it's a little middle sin little wedge shot you know right off the line essentially down left field line hustles out for the lead double so you've got the go ahead run at second base and you've got your two three four hitters coming up in the top of the ninth inning looking to take the lead a situation where the Padres have excelled at this season this is not 2023 this is a team that has been great close and late great with runners in scoring position great in clutch situations all season and up steps the guy who has been the best in baseball in close and late situations not just the best this year but like historically one of the greatest seasons anyone has ever had coming through in the clutch late in games with the game on the line and runners in scoring position jerks and pro far got to feel like you're in good shape if you're the San Diego Padres in that situation yeah I mean I said it when he walked up to the plate I said he's gonna lay one down it both says how do you know I said because I've watched every game and jerks and pro far this happened you know a couple of months ago and he basically he didn't interview and he's like this is my game you know this is how I grew up playing I'm playing the game and what is in my mind the right way and so people were like oh my god my shield the idiot calling for that font and I mean I wrote one guy back I said I would bet you my car but that was pro far doing it on his own and again I know that that a lot of people want to pretend that this is like high school ball and and and little league and things like that you empower your players to make the the decisions that they make and you live with the results okay and Mike Schiltz said as much after the game he said I got it in Kevin AC's newsletter he said look man we give pro the option I trust him completely I trust him and he trusts his teammates you know it doesn't always work out but man I trust him completely in that at bat and making his decision to feel for the game I support him completely I really have no problem with that I have no problem with that style of management at all zero I think it would be weird if Mike Schiltz was swing away swing away like that's a guy that's a veteran that you trust now the result wasn't what it needed to be Jake did not get the job done off of Helsey man he did not get the job done off of Helsey you know I hate giving up and out you know I hate it a ground ball the right side does essentially the same thing but you do have a chance of that ground ball finding a hole and you have a lead I also don't really like playing for one there at all I mean again with the meat of your lineup coming up get three or four maybe you don't have to use Robert's war as that game so you know I hate it if it's the game seven in the world series if it's game one of the world series and it's the bottom of the order sure but when the most clutch guy we have on the team gives up and out a freebie to a guy like Ryan Helsey you give him just a little bit of a window to say oh all right I can get out of this and boy he made some nasty pitches to crony and he made some nasty pitches to Manny so look didn't work out I have no problem though with Schiltz letting his guys do that you know I just don't have any problem with it I should I have a problem with it I really don't I don't have a problem I don't I don't I think it'd be weird to see a manager waving his hands swing giving the old you know let's swing away boys I mean he's going to trust his players to make the right decision he executed the bunt perfectly but he gave them an out an ounce of precious and playing for one didn't make a lot of sense to me but yeah I did like what pro far said too self-awareness because did you see my at bats tonight I was oh for four you know so yeah I mean there's what have I always said about the guys that bunt they're just not feeling confident in their ability and he's so confident that's the thing is like I've never felt that from pro but when you're when you're in a bit of a scuffle as he is you want to try to make something happen for your team I don't really have a problem with it Benny that you know but you gave up an out so it sucks it didn't work so it sucks obviously I think in a vacuum you're probably right that the correct thing to do is to swing away in this situation I think your best argument that you mentioned was yeah getting one run oftentimes wins you the game but it's also possible you need two or three runs to win the game you don't know what's going to happen in the bottom of the ninth inning jerks and pro far could hit a home run there and guess what Nolan Aronato's single maybe makes it a one-run game but then Robert Torres gets the next out and you win the ability to go for a bigger inning is an important part of the equation there but ultimately I don't know that there's a total winning argument here ajakasville did a nice job of mathematically breaking it down jerks and pro far's bunt increased the pot raise chances to win the game but only a little tiny bit from 67 percent to 68 percent in that moment obviously a base hit in that situation increases their chances probably by like 25 percent like 92 percent yeah if he gets a hit there if he gets a home run it's probably 95 or 96 percent at that point to win the game but if he makes an out and doesn't advance the runner it lowers the ponder's chance to win probably down to like 54 or 57 percent so there's arguments on both sides and I also think one argument is jerks and been so good in those situations you want him swinging the bat a hundred percent and not leaving it up to jacron worth against a really nasty pitcher but when you say that he's really nasty which makes the job for jerks and also harder it's a that's an argument to bunt as well knowing how nasty ryan hell's lee is well then jacie should have bonded you well you can move the if you move the runner over then you don't need a hit to score him against a really nasty guy you just need to make some decent contact a fly ball a ground ball in the right place I mean they obviously you know brought in the infield didn't need to because you know jac ended up striking out there are arguments on both sides of this one yeah i mean what it always boils down to me is you're giving them a precious out and i again taking into account jerks and and they they mentioned that kevin it mentions in this newsletter he's been in 195 over his last 21 games he says i haven't been good in about maybe two weeks it's a long season you're not going to feel your best it just happens you're tired your legs don't work this is my first really really good season and with a really really good season there's a lot of running you're on base all the time there's a lot of running a lot of wear and tear on the body and it's new to me i'm learning a lot and uh he goes i'm just playing the game crony he brings that run in most of the time sometimes it doesn't work so we flush it we move on uh but i you know you do wonder would you do it would you do it again today pro you know given the opportunity if it's ryan helsley again runner on on second nobody out would you do it again and knowing you know what exactly happened there's also uh an advantage to being someone unpredictable and sure if the you if the defense knows this guy is always going to bond in this situation makes their play a lot easier but not knowing if jerks and may swing away or may bunt probably adds to your chance of success both ways whether you swing away or bunt by the way helsley bare-handed that ball could have thrown it away hundred percent could have could have ended up working out really well for the san diego pot raise in that situation uh vibes wise i think you can make the argument that you you want pro far swinging away there the kind of season you're being been having be confident go up there but showing confidence in jay coop by the way came up with a huge go ahead hit night before great at that the night before probably also good for team morale and camaraderie passing that baton along and showing some confidence in the guy who hits behind you in the line of didn't work out here but again i could go around and around on this on this topic and probably never come to a definitive right answer yeah there's i mean it's baseball so it's a result the result didn't get the run in but that's as simple as but that's that's it works it was great it does but you don't know that it would have worked had he swung away no he might have struck out and not even gotten the runner up but if it's the numbers that you crave what are his numbers in high leverage situations and clutch even as good as he is less than 50 percent of the time he's not hitting 500 so he's probably not going to get a hit if he swings away more than likely he will not get a hit there what's his average and he did get the bunt down i think he's around 390 or something something crazily good but not over 500 we'll continue this discussion talk about robert suarez and play real or fake all next year on 97 3 of the fan sometimes in football you need just a little more for that first down you need times bad times you know we've had our share certainly more good than bad though certainly more i got to stop engaging with the doomers cuz like one guy's name is padre's doomer i should have known when i was like that's on me like he's it's right there in the name i can't be surprised you know when he says joe must grove is washed or whatever and i'm like were you did you watch friday did you watch tonight quality start for joe coming off of an injury like i washed is not the the term that enters my mind and uh there's you know listen there's an nfl mentality to the baseball season probably probably are partly to blame for it uh... i will i will take responsibility there but think you have to step back and and just look at the body of work right now and the body of work is has been really good really impressive yeah yeah the body of work has been outstanding for the san diego padre's uh you know the questions yesterday both about sware's effectiveness and whether he should have even been used in the ninth and obviously it in whole in a home game it's pretty easy to put in helsley in the ninth because you can win it in the bottom of the ninth but the padre's to win that game would have also had torus yeah but he'll tell him that it was an easy decision for all the marmal to go to helsley in the next because they can win it in the bottom of the ninth as they did for the padre's to win that game they would have also needed to get through the bottom of the tenth yeah no matter if they score one if they score six six they still need to get three more out so you can always kind of debate whether or not to use your closer in that situation i question it pretty much every time i don't i don't have a problem with it but i question it it's so it's this score if you know who do you think they would have brought in i was wondering myself who who would have pitched the tenth let's say jerksen gets the button down crony hits a sacrifice you're up four to three and you're going to the now well no no let okay let's say that was our let's say you're still tied at three sware's gets through the ninth and then you score he gets aeronado out and you score in the tenth and it's four to three now in the bottom of the tenth runner on second sware's those thrown astrata could be astrata he pitched the day before eight pitches probably astrata was who was going to be the guy i'm suspicious i'm a simple tin or whatever like it makes so much more sense to always just have the closer in there when you have the lead versus the type of thing it would have been astrata more honer hoeing probably then i'm not sure who who would have pitched the bottom of that tenth but i don't think sware's would have come back given how much he's been used that was the third time in four days and he threw over 20 pitches probably not going to be a second inning from robert's for as there so you still new need to get through that inning and you can question i think you can question that strategy sure but i don't think you can win that argument just like the bunt argument you can always say well if we lose it in the ninth and doesn't matter who we're going to pitch in the tenth i want to get through that ninth inning you give us a chance in the tenth because we could score five in the top of the tenth and then it doesn't matter who were pitching in the bottom of the tenth yeah i mean we're all hindsight geniuses all of us everyone no one literally the best manager in the world in the world when i have the gift of hindsight of course i wouldn't have done that obviously you didn't get the run home swing away oh you you gave up three consecutive hits with two outs obviously i should have obviously i i was going to go to somebody else there um and then i could just say sware's wasn't available he's pitched too much lately again he's been he's pitched a lot he has and and he's probably there is probably some fatigue as you know has told us many times relievers only get worse over the course of the season yeah every pitch they throw this fatigue is gonna make things tougher and tougher now some guys do overcome that and still get outs and but he's that is a normal thing for relievers but again he he pretty much won his battles he got mason win was just trying to make some contact he was just hoping that that ball would find a whole poke one to the right side got it through that's not that's not a guy you know squaring up and ripping one victor scott's at bat i was really excited the victor scott was coming up there he was a defensive replacement my son goes why is victor scott batting second i go he wasn't he came in as a defensive replacement that's that's probably the cardinals going oh this is coming back to burn us now but he put together good at bat and he blooped one to center field that found some grass so now it's first and second rnato i thought was maybe the worst pitch even mike shilt said we wanted to be careful with them gave him something to hit but he had a ground ball that had an expa of under two fifty i mean three out of four times that's an out to ground ball out it just happened to be up the middle and found the hole where it wins the game for the st. Louis cardinals robert torres didn't necessarily fail so much as baseball happened in the ninth inning against him well i came yes and baseball happened uh throughout the game and i've just i mean obviously if you if you watch the game you were so encouraged by the way the boys came out and and put a couple runs up early yeah they did not deliver the kill shot and they had plenty of opportunities to do so i think mike shilt addressed it after the game too yeah plenty of opportunities one for ten runners in scoring position uh they've been better than that they've been phenomenal at that all year take it as i think it's actually fair to say that's i mean it it absolutely is it's an anomaly for the san diego pot raise to have a game like that it's certainly not the rule one for ten was running in scoring position is an extreme anomaly for the pot raise this year that runner on in every single inning of the game yeah they gave themselves plenty of chances so didn't come through it's it's they do that every game they put runners on base every game of every inning they're going to win the world series you're not going to be able to beat the pot raise four out of seven times bro a hundred percent they're putting runners on every single inning they're not going to win every game just like yesterday there will be one or two every once in a while that you don't get the risp and you don't score but you set yourself up like that you're going to win the world series so that was not a reason to be concerned game i mean all of the tropes and all of the stuff that we say all the time and all of the things mike shilt says and many machado says after the game in a loss i mean are we like we have very short memories they say this all the time as long as we're in a position to win a game late we we did our job it's not always gonna gonna work nobody goes 162 no right they've been saying this and we again we thought they were insane at the beginning of the year we did we were like oh my god they've stayed true to all of that as long as we have the opportunity to win a baseball game we feel we can do it they didn't last night but they didn't it just was one of those games where it's like no we had a chance and and you flush it and you move on today and try to try to win that series again it's stung in the moment certainly because you hate seeing it happen to to rovers warrez you hate seeing jake not come through and many not come through there with a big knock but um you also look at it and go yeah this is part of the course they were they were in a position to win the game late and they didn't get the job done and it's okay need a contestant for real or fake uh the lines are open right now if you want to call in and take your chance to try to qualify for our trip to las vegas without having to take on woods 833-288-0973 833-288-0973 I think it's always good to remember even the worst team and this year's worst team is one of the worst teams ever the chicago white Sox they find a way to win one out of every four games i've got two almost 250 winning percentage and they're absolutely horrible so if you're playing a four game series probably gonna lose one of those most of the time even against and the cardinals are note by no means one of the worst teams in baseball they're not great but they're not bad they're 50 50 average one game of below 500 at this point they've got good players too and they're going to come through by the way the pod race they had some balls that found holes in the first inning had he did ground balls you know many darby i single it works it works both ways you the you give and you take and and we certainly got some too and uh you know closers at the end don't always get the job done Trevor Hoffman many times came in and tie games and didn't get the job done for whatever reason i don't know if there's a that psychological advantage you have asked everyone we've ever talked to and you know i think they all say not my job is to get outs you know my job is just to get out but you know we love to point to that as oh what an idiotic move you never use your closure in a in a non-save situation it's like man if it's me and i'm managing i'm going with the guy that i trust to get the outs the guy that i've seen get the biggest outs of the year it just it's not that hard you go with the guy you trust the most and that's the guy you trust the most why does he trust him the most because he's delivered the most this is not we overthink this game way too much i'm going to the guy i trust the most in this situation to get me three outs not all nobody's going to be hundred percent nobody ever has been ever you know the course of their career nobody's ever yeah he was 600 for 600 and save opportunities right it's never happened it's never going to happen but you go with the guy you play the percentages the guy that you trust the guy you feel that can get you the outs in that situation that's what mike shilt did and i have no problem with it all right let's get to it it is time to play throwback thursday edition of real or fake some are here for the compelling sports talk with Wichita blue real Dakota black fake Wichita mob no howling mob is real which is tall blue is the only fake one in the entire list i think there should be a rule against tricks like that don't trick yeah it's a trick what's a trick you got mixed it up three and four is no no there's it could be all fake it could be all real they could be four fake and three real trying to you know we want these people to qualify we want them to listen if we want to give me good experience give them an opportunity where they don't have to take on woods and we it's a guessing game i think the more it can be fifty fifty the better it is it's true that's my philosophy on real or fake i try to come up with things that are true guesses occasionally someone knows one or two of them gives you a little bit of an advantage otherwise it's a coin flip and you only need to get four out of seven so i need to get all seven right but today uh they katie new glass gem she would have gotten that one i've never heard of that i haven't heard any of those actually they're all weird looking i was looking at are they oh yeah there's weird they don't look like sometimes they're like ground like not like ears of corn like an apple yeah all kinds of weird colors and shapes and everything yeah an apple but corn shaped yeah apple it has kernels but it's like it's more it's like more of a round what what's the brand i would eat i don't know which one that was try a how let's see howling mob corn let's see we can eat it like an apple which would be awesome i didn't know that i've seen the different colors right in the looks like normal that was that a normal one cornicopias and whatnot there's some that are definitely weird shapes corn now have you ever eaten any other corn than just corn like have you ever had no pretty much like white corn yeah yellow corn sweet corn you had that occasionally blue corn i mean you had blue corn on the cob no more blue corn tortillas yeah it's kind of where you have the blue corn more often candy corn candy corn disgusting awful disgusting not good in a pinch the top half yes in a pinch fine i'll eat probably get a spoonful of sugar in a pinch all right but candy corn's about the slow as i will go but i want to try this apple i'd be all in a black corn blue corn an orb of corn would be incredible basketball size you know but would love it it's his favorite thing like a big pumpkin but yeah corn all right corn on the orb i got to find one of these thank you uh sorry about that then the reason of course corn is such a theme this week is the corn sweat in st louis that's making things so hot and miserable i can't wait to ask mason mccoy about it i can't wait to get out of there when he joins us i can't wait for the these guys i'm not even there i got feel it though i feel it when i watch the games i can see it and feel it to the dude hand a last place he goes oh my god that looks just miserable i know it just looks miserable joe's pouring sweat pouring sweat all night those guys have to be so gassed and now off the tamper where at least it'll be cool inside but yes but one more outside in the day now in st louis which is i mean it may be a tiny bit cooler but you're playing in the day the day which makes things even worse yeah all right don't do this is coming up next and out of st louis didn't mind yesterday seeing a lot of people light the dodgers up for what they did yesterday we'll throw them into the mix for don't do this i've got uh our old pal steven a smith talking about well baseball and you know how that's going to go and he had he got dragged all day yesterday all right that's coming up next first a check of traffic with better woods uh 97-3 the fam don't do this don't don't do this listen if i'm something something bad i mean tell me i'm a bad boy you know just tell me i'm a bad boy why just why i get the argument you don't have to explain it to me i'm not a moron let me tell you why i am a dumbest is time for don't do this don't do this on 97-3 the fam all right woods he has teased me and he won't even tell me what steven a smith said that has brought him once again to don't do this not his first time that he's been in this segment you really yeah i mean it's one of those deals we talk about it a lot and and he's you know all due respect to him he's made a incredible career for himself and but it's when these guys they start talking baseball Betty where they're exposed much like myself in the nba but i know my shortcomings i will tell you all all of you the tier ones the tier twos the tier threes you two i don't know what i'm talking about i haven't really watched the nba since 2000 all right so i know my weaknesses i try not to sad try not to sound like i know what i'm talking about steven a Colin cowherd when it comes to baseball it just their football guys man their basketball guys that's what they are and that's okay be it be it all the way though listen to steven a yesterday talking to mad dog but you do got one so don't bad nothing behind you yes they can't get around you a little bit so i mean they got a pitch to the brother you understand what i'm saying because you got so don't wait waiting in the wings so all of those things facilitate all hits in front of him and judge being who he is uh one soda that's in in uh judge hits after one soda right people would like sometimes to argue that maybe they should put one soda behind Aaron judge sure but no but for the most part this season he is battered in front of Aaron judge yeah i mean there's an argument to be made oh yeah it's and of course get on base in front of the guy who's hitting 50 plus home runs judge hits after but there's not a lot of protection behind judge in life because the Yankees don't have a deep lineup it's it's star heavy yeah and he's still done the incredible amount of damage that he's done but it's not only steven a i mean he also claims to be anky fan so that's not a great look now last season didn't judge lead off sometimes sometimes yeah sometimes he did have guys behind him yes but he has not been doing that this season yeah oh man now you can argue whether that's the right or the wrong decision sure but but it's definitely one soda was not been protecting Aaron judge correct correct just got dragged yeah all day i mean everybody makes mistakes sure but he said he didn't sound that confident when he said it yeah i could hear that yeah kind of fumbling over but cna sounds tries to sound confident that's everything he said that's it just if i didn't know i just wouldn't say it Satan's blowfish he has been really giving baseball solid coverage making sure the best analysts weighing in you made a point this morning you were driving and listening to steve phillips and yeah i knew i was a zaver scrubs yeah both who know baseball former gm former player they know a ton of baseball but even when they're when they're talking about your team and i was listening to discuss the pardry cardinal isn't it fun anything wrong but it's such like surface level yeah like the national guys can't really get in-depth on every team and i'm going do they know who Jason Adam is you know what i mean i know who Ryan hoeing is but it still is they're kind of describing the game and they didn't obviously watch every moment of the game they can't really get into depth like like we can is pardry's fans and no one can no that's that's the big con with the national guys whether it's steven a smith or um skip bailis whoever it is no one has the time to be it's knowledgeable about a subject as a true die-hard fan of that team so they're never giving you the kind of analysis you can get from a specific die-hard like observer fan your beat writer your local radio hosts are almost always going to have better insight the national guys on your team well i mean and again though if he if he claims to be a Yankee fan he would know he would absolutely know that uh it's what makes guys like jeff passe and the most impressive yeah because they actually do have pretty good insight around the league on every team and that is really hard to do but if you guys jeff passe and all right now break down the the you know the four three linebacker scheme and tell me about the salary cap and the nba i would hope he has no idea right because there's just no way you can know about everything what i told you this early on in the in our relationship is i'm not going to be afraid to say i have no idea no i did not watch and uh it took me a while to get there it's okay to to to not know everything it's okay you know know your know your your weaknesses your shortcomings and do the best you can with the other stuff all right uh maybe a faux pas yesterday i was going to do the dodgers what's was your don't do this for them well there was the the golden shohay otani decoy dog bobblehead kind of like the joe must grove and and dog bobblehead they had their own but they only had forty thousand and they see you know dodger stadium seats fifty fifty two yeah and they said you have to get in law and to make sure you're one of the first forty thousand pottery say that too but i've never had a heard a huge problem about a lot of people not getting their giveaways at pod raise games but the dodger said not everyone's going to get one so people were lining up starting at eleven a.m. there were lines like shaviz ravine like a mile long to make sure people were getting in that's not the best way to handle a giveaway where fans feel like they have to get their eight hours before the game to get in line just to make sure they get the free giveaway at the game i saw one not good i think our friend charisma posted on ebay ten thousand dollars for a shohay bobblehead and i thought to myself are you out of your mind somebody that is out of that is free giveaway i mean and it just yeah like you said there were people lined up around the corner but um yeah you do think if it's the la dodgers just make fifty thousand exactly right and just control the the scene you know it's going to be a sellout now the potter is do the forty thousand thing as well now capacity of pecko park is technically forty thousand but yeah in the sellouts they get up to forty five now with all the standing around so yeah i assume there are people who don't end up getting those giveaways but i don't know just for the dodgers to have people no one lines up at pecko park at eleven a.m. to make sure they get it the don't do this though the the don't do this though was them posting uh i saw some dodger fans posting pictures of one lady had hoarded like 12 and she's like standing around them like she was guarding for not you shouldn't have more than one correct unless they she bought 12 tickets you can really sell them for ten thousand dollars you should have bought as many tickets as possible and then just started selling those things nobody says does anybody remember the whale beanie baby for the potter is in ninety six apparent was that i don't remember that cause a riot were you beanie baby guy no surprised me actually no all right but what i was getting i mean this you tell me is this a faux pas so livy don with her army or social media army yeah paul skeins pitch yesterday for the pirates he was okay five innings three runs uh but left with a big lead ten to three against the yeah gonna get a dub the cubs gonna get the dub not the dubs matter but it would have been his ninth win sure and then the cubs bowl or the pirates bullpen imploded and they ended up losing fourteen to ten and as the implosion was happening livy don went to social media and posted a you gotta be kidding me meme of paul skeins and i heard them talking about this morning and you know like that might not sit well necessarily in a pirates clubhouse if you know a significant other of a player is basically lighting up it's you know teammates for not getting the job done we're all thinking it obviously yeah you know but you know they they know they blew it they don't need you pointing it out and then i think it's fairly harmless i think it ultimately is probably pretty harmless but nfl wife that really was like tweeting during i can't believe it's not written in the homes but i don't think it was it but like oh no it was somebody that was like well he can't do it all by himself yeah you need to block for i was like whoa whoa whoa yeah this is kind of on that same wavelength i can't remember ultimately paul skeins did nothing to take the narrative away from jackson maryll what's that stuff was it kelly staford yes no it was matt stafords wife yeah like sure yeah like something like you can't do it all himself i can't remember i don't want to i want to yeah all right what do we have for do-do this you had uh travish jand couch rindaller check this out well let's set the stage to do two on white socks like a do-do two on white socks with a chance to walk a rare victory looking for the walk-off i i don't know who is it the plate uh it was is andrew chafin on the mound callie play the audio friend yeah um uh what the hell is all i can think is rick bond it's not rick bond andrew bond yeah andrew bonds at the mat at the at the plate i was just queuing up i found the uh white socks yeah the white socks radio call is one two coming swingin a fly ball deep left jankowski leaps and he took away a game-winning home run dude and the runners are back to their bases he went way over the fence and took it away these are the best catches i've ever seen it really is a top like top five catch in major league baseball history the other one that was also a text range was gary matthews jr i was going back through some of the old uh catches that i saw matthews jr with one of the most incredible catches in center field you'll ever see but this one man they were about to get walked off by the chicago white socks now did they end up winning the game the texas range they come back in uh yeah they held on the helmet they just needed one more out after that they got it they think they walked the bases loaded and then they got and then they got the final out so another loss a painful one ready what a good dude he is man what a good good dude he is he's a ladening defensive replacement guy got himself a world series ring last year he was so kind as we interviewed him before he was really really cool dude and uh the catch is so stupid really i mean any catch like that is amazing but to actually take away a walk-off walk-off run i don't remember ever seeing that before i mean in people in chicago or like of course like it means they're 103rd loss you think we have a little more memorable than the first 102 maybe yeah yeah at some point there's just another loss you guys see the clip from that same game uh in between innings catcher throws down to second on the last throw yep second basement or or the short i don't know what was was not paying attention and he was standing on the base and the ball hit some right in the nose right in the nose just threw down all right coming in just daydreaming and just boom right in the face that uh cartonals catcher paj said a little trouble throwing down this yesterday i haven't been taken advantage of all of that yesterday they scored the one run uh on jake's score to the first inning but then they didn't take advantage of it after that that's don't and do do this for a thursday that was don't do this with bennon woods on 97 three the fan all right it was uh adam and a lot of other people pointed out to the one i was thinking of was jazelle buncheon talking buncheon talking about her husband tom brady ex-husband tom brady in the super bowl he can't catch it he can't throw and catch and do everything something like that tunnel after the game i think it was after the loss of the eagles and she was very angry i would have been very mad if i were his teammates you know he already gets such an outsized amount of credit for all the wins yeah you shouldn't then make all the losses about his teammates correct that's not fair it's not fair at all so it's more fair what livy don did i mean paul skeins left with the ten three leave he was out of the game at that point yeah she didn't she just you can't do anything about it once you're out of the game yeah yeah you can't control it uh at all and i think that was pretty harmless by livy don also i will defend livy don as you know never done anything wrong as far as i'm concerned so sports so sports no so throwback thursday we're gonna check traffic when we come back paul he's queued up some of our clips from uh this week in bed and wood's history as we do on throwback thursday's including uh all the way back six years to the very first uh months of the show that is coming up next year at ninety seven three the fan now let's peel the curtain back a little bit what makes your favorite like television programs so successful good character development yeah you get attached to whether it's uh you know walter white or larry david you know you want to see what happens next to your favorite characters you get to know them you get to know what they love what they hate what drives them emotionally yeah it's actually serial content essentially just what's yeah what's going on in their lives today it's actually kind of true for for our show as well a radio program for the best shows that's exactly yeah a lot of people can talk padre's baseball i think we do it well but part of it part of the appeal is you know you get to know us and you get to know our personalities and our lives and you spend four hours with us some of you every single day so you know it's kind of an ongoing arc it's like a sitcom you know island characters that can have an art yeah you do like characters then and woods and paul have an arc yes and it started a little over six years ago when this program began and like many first seasons of television programs it's worse than seinfeld what our best it's worse than seinfeld it's rough because no one really has their character totally developed yet go watch an old go watch the second episode of seinfeld you tell me was that any good in comparison the season since yeah i mean this it's the differences are stark now they're stark we had no chemistry we didn't know each other and we had another person on our show as well and it's not even like like in seinfeld they just got better yeah and the writing got better the jokes got bad figured out like totally George okay who George is yeah who's George right who is a lane who is Kramer i mean they had an idea but they had to really you have to extrapolate people and then a show like Breaking Bad season five and season one are so vastly different like completely different characters it's it's a whole different show it's not just season one so slow and you had to watch you have to set a burn yeah slow burn now now we are real people which makes things a little bit different but at the same time even reality tv you watch Survivor you know you learn about the contestants over the the course of the show and you know they're real motivations whatever so we were early in our show's tenure and trying to figure out like what what kind of show do we want to do who are we and you know i wanted to do the normal kind of sports talk radio show and take calls and talk about the chargers and whatever you know it's uh that this is what i was used to Woods had a little bit different idea and he was always looking for spots where perhaps we could break from the normal sports talk radio program and there was one of those moments which was an enigma when he started yeah with us well you were kind of almost trying to go along with me too much of it was I was well i've never been at my wedding that's why I think this clip is so good because this was so about five months in yeah and that's kind of when the wheels at least started to pivot to turn a little bit I still say it was about a year in where we really figured out our show and how we wanted it to sound this was five months in and we had yeah before play my instinct of course is to ignore it correct plow move on and pretend it didn't happen just be a pro like okay but you know things like this happen but we don't need to address it we just move on and continue on with our good solid padre's talk conversation we were talking actually about Luis Urias at the time and Carlos Eswahay yes and then the third the fourth voice over here was our old boss Joe yep and this is what happened he's really no worse than many of the other players on that team I just singled him out as I asked kind of the poster boy for the padre's lack of success I asked you is it irrational is it irrational all right what was that by the way Paul can you uh I need to eat Paul I'm gonna need that uh I need I need to eat I need that forever um no I I completely lost my team they have thought it shows me off and Joe's got a little anger and Joe's got some gurgle to the top isn't there eating like a raw lemon uh yeah no I mean look if that if this means Eswahay is packing his bags to go play Fortnite and El Paso I'm totally totally so do we like it yes one more time jerks this is the great this is the greatest moment his show is right it was do we like the t t shirt uh better than bip a hundred percent of alamard better I like better than bip better than 80 I'm gonna throw up okay how about Alan Wiggins well I don't think he's as fast as Alan you're not gonna get any stuff just plowing through the base but he does have speed and good defense let's uh I'm dying in the back here with some of the listeners have to say I'm crying about expectations I love it one of my favorite moments of all time you have to embrace the uh but why that was important is that after that we we started embracing the weird and mistakes I mean that's probably what started leading to Ben's flubs yeah and the drops a lot of the things that we do on the show today yeah train rec radio started right there forgot about all of this I somebody said I sound 10 years younger yeah man I've aged a lot a lot to me paul or all the chill about man all of it six years ago crazy crazy got an infant that's it immobile yeah the to the run around everywhere inside and out all right that was six years ago that of course one of the very defining eras of our show was the pandemic and trying to get through months and months without any real content at all certainly no sporting games to talk about everything shut down we're not with Paulie he's alone here in the studio and we're out at the corona cave which was surprisingly it worked out pretty well uh in the little guest house we would get together in each other's bubble and we had our equipment that was just set up there every single day and magically I don't know how every morning we go we would connect it would work we would pretty much be on the air no problem for four hours every single morning 36 degrees in there I'm wrapped in a blanket every day until this week in 2020 when for the first time like for like the pandemic had been gone on for months and you know my parents were strictly quarantining they were we would wave at them yeah bring us a bagel every now and then yeah like but just leave it at the door so we would have no through the window no interaction just wave through the window but they actually I think they went to visit my grandma or something and and needed to take care of something so they were actually out of the house house we couldn't get in the house was locked and this is when we have our first technological internet problems of course yeah this was uh so the the trade deadline was at the end of August that year season started like july 20th or something so that the weird late august trade deadline and the potteries had just made that trade they sent uh austin hedges cow quontrol the cleveland acquired mike clevenger and so we had mlb.com's mark fine sand on the air and what had happened all morning was you guys were dropping off eight minutes every eight minutes on the nose almost you guys the connection would fail you guys would completely disappear it got to the point where I would just play like music for like a minute or two and then you guys would pop back on it was awful but we couldn't do anything about it nothing there was not the only thing we could do is reset the router or just go home just go home dump into national that was it i was so mad i don't know why we still decided to try this interview two hours later don't as i point don't you know why yeah check this we're talking to mark fine sand and you guys oh god it's super raised off to an 18 and 12 starts just four games behind the dodgers preller hasn't been afraid to make big moves during his tenure in san diego so the idea of adding a piece or two or three wouldn't be shocking especially in the bullpen about about ten pieces mark these ten pieces are coming from the bod race at this trade deadline i was going to say that i think they undershot the expectations there uh you know it might get my job received he could hear us at all in my conference he was in compliment oh my god he saw this he could hear us but we couldn't hear anything here he lost it i don't think mark likes oh god so you guys were still technically on the air you were about to drop but you thought you had already dropped so you just started talking while he's talking so yeah you guys are just talking over it in my in my job received your job at all you know in my conference there's a mindfulness that he said i'm dying that the pod race we're going to be very busy i don't think mark likes now you're off now we're gone completely go hello you guys there mark i think we lost our guys we're doing a remote broadcast still i'm gonna say i was talking and they clearly couldn't hear me no so we're gonna work on getting them back but uh mark we'll just keep you on the line here so what did you know when you saw the uh that's going to do the interview break i mean was that where you thought he was going to go here in sean diego it's like paul he's a position player coming into pitch the last two innings and yeah i because i knew if i could just figured out ask a question then you guys will probably dial back in and you can't play anymore you're ready to go i can't hear you so we had i remember now we had uh uncle teddy was scheduled to join us that morning like the next hour like absolutely not he'll lose his mind could you imagine that would have been great rating unless you guys kept it to four minutes but that would be one answer from an uncle teddy it was really rough that was a rough one i can't hear it again let's bang that one for next year cuz i don't know i don't know i don't want to hear that one either us just talking over him and he can't hear us well we couldn't hear him so we thought oh we're off the air again and we started you know oh my god complaining like we gotta wait until it comes back and wondering what what's pauly i was saying i think they they undershot the expectations they're uh you know it might get my job received i would at never how bad i was behind the scenes why on earth would it only like drop in one direction for ten seconds and then drop us the other direction no idea what was going on that day so livid it was awful so mad it was uh that was a miserable i don't want to hear that next year okay all right uh this hour figure it out what's going on you know and mason yeah you know is going to be at nine o'clock okay and uh mason mquay eight thirty all right let's join us all right remember we're going right to the eco water so cal pothrey's pre-game show at ten fifteen with sammy leavitt this morning a little bonus bed and wood so the second almost half of the show coming up lane is it when you have to hear a clip like that it really sets you up kind of puts you in a bad mood like just brings back all those memories that was not my intention i know i know you're just doing your job over there trying to come up with good good throwback thursdays but uh i do like to most of the funny ones i love the gurgle noise that's a good one yeah that's a good one uh we've been talking pottery's baseball uh all morning kind of a a bummer of a loss last night certainly but some good news i think uh that we can talk about for the san diego pottery's kevin aces newsletter this morning was talking about you know the game last night and and pro farce quotes i thought were great and i thought she'll had some great quotes too about trust in his team but little nugget buried in their benny did you see the the nugget i like nuggets i am looking at a nugget right now involving uh hastan kim's return so that's one nugget yeah that's one nugget but the other nugget uh was about fernando tates jr and he's expected i think and i'm now i'm scrolling for it but i did see okay so he took dozens of at bats against minor league pitchers on tuesday in peoria yeah in the cage yesterday and a scheduled to face pictures again today in simulated game situations pottery still haven't ruled out a brief rehab assignment but uh kevin aces your rights this workload appears to be trending toward his not having one the expectations that tates can be back in right field for the pot raise next week that's a good nugget taste i don't does that mean monday when they return home does that mean wednesday after the off day my guest would be one of those two possibly if everything goes well the next few days now i'll i'm going to the game thursday and saturday i would love to see the return of fernando tates jr i would love to see him back in that lineup you know firmly uh put in there do you if you're if you're shilton and preller and you're holistically creating your lineup do you give him a little bit of a breather you know maybe put him at like not a breather but like ease him in a little bit he's just too whole right back in it man get it you know get after it the way that jerksen has been scuffling a little bit is it dependent on what happens the next week and you know i do think crony maybe slides down a little bit uh but where do you where do you stick that kid uh day one back in the lineup you just want to tell him like hey man you're our superstar you were playing really well before you got hurt you're in the two you're in the three whatever it may be i like the idea of putting him back maybe at two dropping jerks into three dropping crony down somewhere in the order nanny four um i mean i think you know your best lineup if you're really not worried about personalities you might even want to put a lefty at fifth after nanny yeah how about jackson meryl and you could move jackson up and then zander sixth and then crony seven hundred percent it gives you a ton of length in your lineup yep uh and then you could have you know hossan kim eighth and and hagi ninth or something like that once everybody's back and we talked to but that moves a lot of people out of where they've been and been successful and been comfortable for a while so you know you want to have the minimal disruption it moves pro far who's scuffling and has you know admitted i'm i'm a little bit gassed i'm trying to figure out i'm learning about myself was the the quote in there you move him you still want him at three i mean look everybody right now is clamoring for jackson meryl in the three hole and we talked to so many former players we talked to adam jones about i think we talked to booney about it uh we talked to tony win jr about it and you know he attributes a lot of jackson's success this year being able to hit six seven right like being it's a different mindset it's a different mentality i think you know you always want your best players in in the best position i'd be down to see i'd certainly be down to see i mean he has hit some some gotten some huge knocks of some elite pitching some elite relievers and clutch situations you want your best guys getting the most they be and that will then do you move mane up to three because of how hot he is right now and get him more at bats maybe then he's currently getting in the four slots maybe but then you've got a right hand issue at the top if tatise is out there yeah but remember how we started the season you know i mean there was i just the match ups as far as our side goes i don't know what the splits our team team wise i know again they've still struggled a little bit against lefties they've gotten much better than they were does it really matter at this point if you're stacked two righties back to back i just don't know i mean obviously you want a balanced lineup and they have the personnel to do it almost every day i absolutely have the personnel to do it but i think the if pro far continues to to scuffle a little bit you know maybe he would benefit from going down a little bit and and you know he's been so clutch he's been so good all year um i wouldn't put him below fifth though no and i don't think he would i don't think any of these guys are going to take it personally all we hear about is buy-in right now buy-in buy-in buy-in buy-in i mean things are going to have to change in the next they're going to change in the playoffs certainly they're going to change down the stretch and i think that's okay and i think we have the right guys finally in that clubhouse to to say we'll do it yeah whatever you need to do for the most part you know short of of moving a defensive position now in the middle of the season i think short of that but i think everybody would be game for it now i mentioned hosun kim and just a reminder that his replacement mason mccoy is going to join us in 24 minutes supposed to call us from st louis well pre-game conversation with padre short stop now today is actually i didn't realize this today is the day that hosun kim is eligible to return from the 10-day injured list yesterday was his tenth day on the isle got hurt on august 18th in colorado uh so he could be activated today he won't be though according to again the newsletter he's uh feeling better not like day to day and he's going to get back but he's day to day in the sense that he's making recoveries he's able to increase his intensity of his throwing in his swings according to mike shield we're clearly not going to push him but he's making positive strides so it looks like it's going to at least be a few more days for hosun kim he's not going to be activated instantly today because when he got hurt remember there was talk maybe we don't even put him on the injured list and then they decide well let's let's not rush him and give him those full 10 days but he could be back right after the 10 days well now it's going to be maybe two weeks total uh at least another couple of days before hosun kim does return you know listening to shilt in the post game last night uh he didn't sound super confident in that you know the of him coming back really today tomorrow the next day i he just didn't sound too he's like he's yeah he's getting better you know we're not going to rush him and i i do think you know having the the really solid um addition of mason koi who has really just blown me away man with his defensive prowess and his ability to get on base and you know just kind of keep his head down and do his job every day find a way to do something to help the team win um i i think that lightens the the need to rush hosun kim back and i look i mean i think hosun kim is obviously the better player but i i right now there's no reason to rush him back just like there's really been no reason to rush Fernando Tetis junior back had they not gone on Benny the second half run we'd be in here every day going why let's go man we need you know get back get back they've they've really been able to not only weather the storm but cruise through the storm of some of these injuries with joe with you with toddy and then the u darvish update uh he threw what was described as an intense bullpen yesterday expected to make a rehab start in the minor leagues later this week so figure by probably three days from now throws a bullpen or a start in the minors uh which means he's trending toward maybe even returning at some point next week or the end of next week uh to make a start for the san diego pond race so i love it damn so those are your their injury updates i mean you say there's no reason to hurry anybody back if you want to win the division you are running out of time to catch up to the dodgers you lost a game last night as the dodgers beat the Orioles so you're now four games back in me and al west you lost a game to the diamondbacks so you're a game behind arizona in the fight for the wild card you know what happened last night corbin carol who's been as as hot as any human being uh on the planet you see that last night edwin ds what's they were down and i literally i went to bed i went a week timmy trumpets poly got us again last night and served it up i i have seen people saying i want to make yeah here we go timmy trumpets comes into the game it was fun when we were going to walk out home yeah super fun i loved it terrible terrible bitch corbin carol he's just deposited it grand slam diamondbacks win now the good news is they beat the Mets who are the first team that could catch the podraze you know and knock someone out of the playoffs so they remain six games back podraze while i say they're running out of time to catch the dodgers it's tough to catch up four games in 27 remaining that the podraze have it's even tougher to catch up six games in 27 remaining which is now what the Mets would have to do to pass the podraze you got we talked about it earlier i'm not worried about the Mets but you got i'm not really either you got three you got three against the dodgers still uh and you own the tiebreaker between the you know the the dodgers because you won the season series so yeah i mean i i'm with you but there's still no reason to rush guys that aren't ready to come back back you know especially when guys the guys that are filling in for them uh in mason like mason mccoy he's doing a fine job doing a fine job the Arizona or the Atlanta Braves also won yesterday so they pulled a game closer to the podraze in the wild card standings where they are right now there are two games back to the podraze but now if they pass you you've just gone from second to third right which isn't actually the worst thing second might be the worst place to finish because then you probably have to go to Arizona yep to face that red hot diamond banks team if you finish third in the wild card then you go to the third division champion which would right now be the Milwaukee Brewers yep good team but you won the season series against the brewers and maybe not quite as playoff formidable as a diamondbacks team that went to the world series last year so you're not really worried about you know the Braves catching you you really i agree with you the goals here is still catching the dodgers and the diamondbacks and trying to win the division at the very least get home field advantage in that first round of the playoffs by being the first wild card team yeah brand makes a good point dodgers dbacks play this week either way you gain ground on one of them each day assuming you win you take care of your own business in Tampa and that's the thing is it's laid out there for you but you have to win either the next four or three of the next four otherwise you're guaranteed to gain no ground and maybe even lose ground on a team yep so this next four game stretch five game stretch with the end of this series the three and then the one more between the diamondbacks and the dodgers on monday you'll kind of know that by the time we come back from the holiday weekend on tuesday morning the standings will tell us what we really can expect the rest of the season are you just trying to clinch a playoff spot are you trying to win a division always going for does that mean you're going to be doing magic numbers on tuesday not possibly yeah all right yeah you could be September depending on where it goes we'll be in september we may be in the teens when it comes to magic numbers by then so that might be the day where you start looking at it now last year you liked run differential this year somebody made the very astute point on twitter this year's banism is expected ira he's really been pounding the exe ira and the ex bia ex ex bia ex expected batting average balls in play and then on tuesday will pivot to the magic numbers this is great every year there's a new you're not alone though i did see our beloved beloved shield sidler the other day tweet she was fishing and i think she was it looks like she was fly fishing and she's like i'm casting thinking about the value of run differential anyone else do that and i almost fell over my chair i was like i know a guy that does it and did it did it for a hundred and sixty two games all of last season there's nothing unusual about the potter is run different parental this year they're they're plus sixty eight their record is seventy six and fifty nine based on their run differential you would expect their record to be seventy five and sixty so they are essentially one game better than you would expect based on their run differential that is statistically negligible yeah not really that important which is all we begged for this year beat last year the statistically anomaly you know the entire year yes i was just that i was hoping to get to this point of statistical normality correct because this is what you would expect correct when you exactly when you ask for your opponents you should have a winning record last year the pot raise about this time had about the same run differential yet were eight games or whatever under 500 that made no sense whatsoever you should be sixteen seventeen games above five hundred with this run differential not under five hundred i would like a statistical normality statistical normalcy t-shirt and i will wear it and i'll get you one that doesn't always work out that uh... it doesn't but most times it does then they're back to where they need to be so correct all right uh got to remind everybody didn't say it earlier but we still have that uh sounder for the Kansas tickets to give away at some point between now and the end of the show if you hear our sound this is gonna be scary on my wayward son there'll be truth and you're gone not now but the next time you hear that you call in eight three three two eight zero ninety seven three for a chance to win a pair of tickets to Kansas at humphries on september twenty second tickets available at ticket master dot com so the next time you hear that poly will play it whenever he feels good and ready to play it you can call in for your chance to win all right we are waiting uh mason mccoy's call uh could be coming up either at the end of the next segment or at the start of the following segment so got to play it by ear for the next few minutes bear with us after traffic here at ninety seven three the fan all right so we're just kind of in standby mode uh for mason mccoy's supposed to call in at about seven minutes we'll see if the timing works out well but looking forward to getting to know the panda rays uh short stop at least short stop for now haven't seen a lineup for today's game but i would imagine he is back in there while we've got a couple of minutes woods couple of other results from yesterday uh the guardians finally beat the royals seven to five uh retaking first place in the al central that's quite the divisional race right now and twins are not out of it either so it's kind of a three team race at the top uh astros shut out the fillies ten nothing dude uh yordin elver as three home runs did you see the uh see the brice harper play it first you rarely see that guy fall asleep on the job i think this was yesterday i'm ninety nine percent sure alteve was on third harper was holding a guy on on first they do the pick off over the first base catches it goes for the tag and then just sits there his back like he does the tag is back in alteve sees he's not looking he's not even aware steels home brice harper completely completely caught dead asleep the gritty leader brice harper has never done anything wrong i love brice harper this fits my agenda though okay so that's full disclosure uh but yeah they got smoked yesterday they're they're scuffling a little bit benny so uh they fall again behind the dodgers for the race for the number one seed right now in the national league uh the brewers are two and a half games behind the fillies and dodger dodgers and then the brewers fillies and brewers then diamondbacks pod rays and braves and the um brewers did beat the giants five to three yesterday with six shutout innings from freddie peralta now i did not see this probably put it in our rundown though that um blake snell according to bleacher report is expected to now opt out of his contract with the giants the the one-year option deal that he signed late in spring training and joined uh san francisco it was kind of a question after he got off to such a rough start this year whether you might want to come back and play another season for the giants and then see if he could hit free agency but after his no-hitter and solid second half of the year the prevailing thinking is now blake snell will hit the market again in free agency this off-season and leaving 30 million ish on the table right there would be just a one-year deal ban that's a tough one i mean yeah he's obviously gonna believe believe in himself but he's gonna want to get somewhere where he can do the full spring training and all that it really set him back early such a late starter anyway he's still pretty much a 30-million dollar year guy yes he wants that longevity so he would have earned 30 million but 15 million of it was going to be deferred a couple of years if he opted in the giant so 15 now 15 i think three or four years from now just not not bad and and i don't know that he'll get 30 like next year for many team that signs him but for a multi-year what you want is you know multiple years probably averaging in the 25 range and you'll feel pretty good about that if you're if you're blake snell the question is is there a team is a year older is there a team that's willing to commit to blake snell long-term and could the San Diego Padres be one of those teams that is interested they talked to the giants of the trade deadline about blake snell they were certainly willing to have those conversations i don't think their opinion of blake snell has changed at all simply the price tag that's been the concern this year with the you know trying to get under the luxury tax number and and he just there was no way he was going to fit into the Padres plans this year does that change after next year does it change with money coming off the books following the 2025 season you're no longer paying Eric cosmos contract after next year and you'll have a little more money to play with is that the kind of guy that you want to allocate that money toward no it was total just speculation but bleacher report had their top 10 yeah San Diego Padres with a number one t one yeah number one yeah i would have said maybe five or six we've had this conversation i feel we just rewind the tape six months ago or whatever um yeah i i would have loved to acquire him at the deadline hundred no one he was in opt out knowing pro rated pitch and well and all of that that tells me okay yeah we're all in yeah and ace like that but when i saw like i was it really off season like like a long term contract i go is that speculative it's your speculation sports radio guessing i mean guessing educated you take your you know that the Padres like him you know that they were interested in him two months ago you know he was successful in San Diego you know he's the kind of player who likes to be comfortable when where he goes and he has been on the record saying extremely comfortable in San Diego would not have left had he been able to get anywhere kind of the offer that he got somewhere else but wasn't gonna work out this year so i certainly see a scenario where Blake can come back what we don't know and we probably will never know even now the Padres have not ever admitted publicly that they were trying to get under the luxury tax number now their actions have made it extremely obvious what the plan was to start the season but never once did AJ Preller or Eric Groopner or Eric Kucenda when asked about it in spring training say that we are trying to lower payroll to the point that we do not have to pay luxury tax penalties and in you know endure the other penalties that come with going over that tax limit the draft pick penalties everything else international signing bonus pool all of those things but their actions have told us that that was the strategic approach to the payroll for 2024 put the best possible team you can together but keep it under that number 237 million or whatever it is for your luxury tax number spend whatever you want under that put the best team you can possibly on the field we're right up to that but don't go over that number and they still haven't said that yeah oh beautiful we've got poly will answer the phone so what what is the plan for next season we'll never know well it won't they won't tell us they're in full cost cutting cutting mode right now their fringe contender they've just unloaded Tyler Rogers Tyros strata so yeah there's they could end up keeping those guys if nobody claims them but they've all been put on waivers as well all right we ready to go poly still talking to them but we will continue the discussion about blake snow future salaries for the San Diego Padres and where they might go in 2025 but right now we go out to a bush stadium in st. louis where we are joined by the short stop for your San Diego Padres and I imagine that that sounds pretty good to mason mccoy who is with us right now in 97 3 the fan mason you're on with ben and woods and paul back here in san diego how are you doing this morning i'm a little sleepy not a people that are here for my town but no i'm good i couldn't do better man there's so much i want to ask you i mean there's so much obviously you know we know your story 29-year-old rookie coming up and and not only coming up and you know seeing how the other half lives i know you had a cup of coffee with toronto but come in here and say all right you're in there man and go make plays you made a spectacular play last night how has it been give me some stark differences between minor league life and life in the big leagues i think the separation between those two is so drastic that there's there's not really like one specific thing i mean you can just go from from the flights to the to the gear you get to the stadiums to the fans um i mean there there's so so much difference between the two but i think the biggest thing for me is just that the want and the drive to win every game you know i'm not in the minor leagues it's all about the development it's all about you know hey we want you to do this or try to do this today whatever it may be and though the winning kind of gets lost in the shuffle if you will but that was like the first thing i think that was one of the first things i said i might have been to see some events was like you kind of forget how not how to win but you forget like what it's like to play to win and how much fun that is so right when i got here that was like the big the big switch from the minor leagues to you know the big leagues was like you know we're in a playoff push but also you know we're trying to win every game every about matters getting on base matters making the plays matter and that was something that i have i've had so much more fun playing the game just for that aspect of winning yeah and you definitely look like you're having fun now you mentioned when you said some of the stark differences the gear and i had to ask you about your spikes because i have not seen i haven't seen those i'm like this is jim he's got the jeff bagwell look the black spikes and i'm like this is my captain this is jeff bagwell this is brian jiles i loved it and i go i got to ask him now mannie hasn't offered to give you one of his seven thousand pair of spikes yet no i'm sure his feet are a little bit bigger than mine like i just i was on i was an oklahoma city on the road so i have i had gray cleats and black cleats and that was about it and you know the alpasso is black white and red so it was fine well then i got here and i was like oh no you know we're at home where we're at home wearing white and brown i'm like this is not gonna look good and yeah i just i just wrote it out i was like you know whatever we're just gonna ride with it and i got you know we won i got a hit and i'm like well you might as well do it again hundred percent oh it was it was working and then we had the city connectors these and i'm like this is gonna be even worse than the regular life structure but we did it anyway and it was fine it is what it is but i i got my white cleats back so i guys i've been wearing those luckily so uh the scouting report we got you know not not knowing in time we saw you a little bit in spring training but you know great glove i've been impressed though with the the at bat so you've battled drawn some walks gotten you know your first major league hit and and a couple more since then what's it been like you know facing that major league quality pitching and what has been kind of your strategy once you've gotten up here i think it's just understanding understanding my role right so like if i told you you know you're uh you know we need you to hit extra base hits and homers you may be more susceptible to taking bigger swings and chasing pitches just to get your best swing off um and knowing that you know my my role if you will is just you know get on base do what you can put good up at together get on base move guys play the game see what the game is doing and and and just try to go off that and so you know putting together those big aeser working walks i think it helps me dial in a little bit better at the point i know what my purpose is i know my plan is when i get to the plate i'm not trying to do anything outside of that um and i'm you know i've been grateful enough to to be up there and be putting together some good aes talking to uh pottery shorts i've made some koi here on beno woods this morning and i had to laugh the other night i was watching the post game interview with manny and you walked right in front of the camera and he's like hey hey what aeser god don't worry he's only been up a couple days i mean it comes with the territory you walk in a club house full of veterans manny machados and her bo guards there's world series rings in there i mean there's it's it i'm 49 uh and when i go down to the ballpark on the field i still kind of stand in awe how is that ben how have the uh that's been treating you since you got there uh it's been awesome i mean i think the hardest thing is just learning routines right so i you know i just i just get called up and i'm trying to learn what the veterans guys routines are so i can kind of you know i'm allowed like i need to stay out of their way in a in a way where it's like i you know if i have to get on the first bus to come hit in the cage that's what i got to do if i have to get here super early to get my work in that's what i got to do so it's just trying to learn um routines i think that's the toughest part but yeah when i walk in front of manny you know i it was my first this first time i've ever obviously been to bush stadium but i'm only two i only grew up two hours from here so i had a like most of my town was here so when i walked up the stairs you know i was immediately like oh i gotta go say hi to everybody or at least no thank everybody for coming and wasn't i even paying attention to the right i walked right so i'm oh my god no that's gonna be a tough look but that's right you learn right you learn right now definitely when i come up the steps i'm definitely constantly looking around and make sure i'm not walking for someone's interview like the game's hard enough right the the game of baseball it is uh but now you're worried about oh god i got to get there early but i don't want to get there too early Jackson Merrill has said it before he's like i just sit in my car uh i mean to watch you know to play with him up the middle uh and i'm sure you guys have been chatting it up and talking and uh what do you see from Jackson Merrill uh but he because he feels like he's been in the league for five years right now Mason yeah i think that's yeah that that's a a big big point he has so much confidence um an unbelievable guy but just his presence on the field and his presence up to bat and you know in the dugout it's like he does seem like he's played in the big leagues for the last five years like it's just it's just him going out and playing the game and um yeah that his persona though the way he carries himself is just that of a a veteran player which is which is pretty special and pretty pretty hard to see and someone as young as he is i can sometimes i forget that he is as young as he is yeah yeah you got eight years on that guy that's insane i know that's insane crazy so i was looking at up so uh mason is a Washington guy but not the Washington Huskies not Washington DC not even that Washington University in Missouri Washington Illinois i had never heard of Washington Illinois now that's that's by Peoria is where you grew up yeah yeah i grew up in in sunny languages a little town like inside of washington but yeah it's like i'm like 20 25 minutes from from this from Peoria um yeah just so it's just a little town black cornfield it's really really tight in the community i think there's maybe 12 i don't know how many when i first got there i think there's maybe 10,000 people in the town total but um now it might be upwards of like 12 to 14 so you know about corn so you know about corn we've been talking about corn all week yeah the corn sweat that's made it so miserable in st louis this week you know that phenomenon oh yeah i know but i'd used to i did tassel for a year i don't know if you know what is that no no it's where you uh basically you it's hired out work for like high school kids great school kids to make some money and you go and you walk through the cornfield and you pull the tassels off the top of the corn so it's like pull the corn down pull the tassels off you throw them on the ground it basically helps them like repopulate for the next year but it's like you get there it's four in the morning and your walk-in's record fields till you do it all in the morning and then you're done by noon but they pay you really well and so it's a good it's i want to say it's a good job it's good money for somebody that's you know a4a freshmen sophomore high school whatever it is but it is miserable to walk through those corn fields and you're soaking wet and then it's humid and um yeah i did it for one year and i was like yeah that's that's about enough for me i don't think i want to be this i did but they take my six-year-old because he's been a bit of a disciplinary problem lately i don't know if he's tall enough to reach up there and grab it but i'm certainly uh certainly willing to try man we have really enjoyed talking to you today how many of those 10 000 people are uh at the games in st louis watching you here um i honestly i i couldn't tell you the first time i had teachers i teachers come out coaches the first night um i got i was telling a family that has been out a lot of my teammates and friends i have a teammate from my own university i would drive down but yeah it's been there's been a lot i don't i don't i can't put into the words or number how many people but the support has been overwhelming for sure well mason and it was a pleasure to get to know you a little bit uh now i did see the lineup has come out did you see the lineup already today yeah i'm not in there today all right not in there today but could still come in late in the game i mean it's never know it's hot it's humid you may get in there keep up to good work man thank you guys i appreciate thank for having me on joy thanks mason mason mason mason coi short stop for your san diego pond race yeah we did did get the lineup i won't spoil it all we'll give it to you when we come back but tylor wade's gonna get a start in there at uh short stop today i ain't which you know after a few days it's been a while make some sense give him a chance back out there uh hopefully he can get it going and uh hopefully mason is ready uh later in the game if they need him pinch run little defense at the end would not be surprised to see mason mccoy contributing once again for the san diego pond races he's done really well uh this past week with hasan kim on the injured list all right we'll come back we'll give you that lineup for the series finale against the st louis cardinals it is out and uh more benefits on the way on san He's here now getting ready for an early pre-game show today Ecowater SoCal pre-game show at 10 15 sitting out there in the dark working on this computer. You can barely see him. Yeah the computer screen provides its own light. It does but I don't think that's healthy. I don't think it's not healthy. I think he's fine but we will we'll have Sammy at 10 15. I got that lineup for you. We will share it to you a little overdue for traffic. So we'll get traffic and then your Padres lineup for game four the series against the Cardinals coming up next year at 97-3 the fan. Mike Schiltz submitting his lineup to face Sunny Gray of the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of this four-game series. Here we go leading off and playing first base today. Luis Arai is spending second in left field. Jiraksson Profar, Jake Cronenworth will play second base and hit third. Manny Machado Red Hot defense hitting the ball well. He will back clean up and play third base. Your designated hitter today is Donovan Solano. Standard Bogart's getting a day off or at least the start of the game off. Donovan Solano will bat fifth. Jackson Merrill hitting sixth in center field. David Peralta is in right field hitting seventh. Kyle Higashiyoka behind the plate batting eighth. So day game after the night game for Higgy got the home run yesterday and then Tyler Wade as we mentioned he will get the shot at the start at shortstop today at that night. Start at shortstop is what I meant to say. The sharding shorts I've done it so I'm sharding shortstop. I've done it so many times. You don't want your shortstop to be a sharding short stop. That's the last thing you want. At least it wasn't Mason McCoy. That's true. Then I said it about after he did nice appearance on our program just a couple of minutes ago. That was a lot of fun to get to know Mason McCoy. Tyler Wade better not short today at short. We need him to to have a you know one of those weighty games where he's in the mix. Something weird. Randomly good for your San Diego Padres. Exactly right. I mean could have scored the winning run in the game yesterday. I was sitting there at third base just almost all remember he almost went for it. Yeah he did on that pitch that was spiked by Helsley and I you know what I loved about that is that he knew he knew even with Jake and Manny up this was going to be tough to make contact off Helsley. So he was he was looking for a pitch in the dirt that maybe they could just steal the run there without having to even make contact. I was praying for what that if that ball didn't go straight into what pahace is straight into his chest protector and come straight down. Wade was ready to take that and he would have to he would have scored that had bounced five six feet away. He scores easily with the jump that he was getting but unfortunately it was it was just right in front of the plate and he could not go anywhere had to scramble his way back. Let's just just get back to make sure he didn't get picked off but he was ready to score that that go ahead run in the ninth inning and he just had a just a little bit of daylight there to try to take home plate. Yeah man I mean you know probably smart to get Xander off his feet. He did look a little gas last night as well and and not not you know he's fallen that fall back to earth after a really ridiculous start after he came off the injured list Benny pro far scuffle a little bit you know you get some of these guys going but yeah get get Xander off his feet today try to try to win this game. Sonny grazes a pretty tough competitor. He hasn't had a bad year by any stretch and and you know he can be pretty nasty when he dials it up so yeah they got their work cut out for him again man there's really there's no easy ones dude no easy didn't mention it I think a lot rise a four hit game it's been a while um and he's still very much in the national league batting race uh you know for the third straight year trying to win for the batting title so uh as of this morning in the national league he was batting with a Zuna who had the lead right now it's a rise 310 Marcella Zuna 309 so Luis moves back into first place in the national league batting race uh with the four hit game yesterday Trey Turner is third now at 305 and then it's uh could tell Marte at 298 Shohay 291, Bohm at 291, Garcia Jr. of the Washington Nationals at 290 and then Jackson Merrill is eighth at 290 as well so go and Jurgson's dropped down a little bit to 10th at 285 but three pottery is still in the top 10 in your batting average leave in the national league. Yep all right well uh this yeah this is not you know this is not your your best lineup that you can run out there but it certainly is a capable lineup getting Donovan Solano some ABS I think his clutch um you know and Michael King on the mound and Michael King on the ball yeah getting uh how's the uh the bullpen is going to be you know again it's this is how it's going to be for the rest of the year it's it's such a dicey proposition for Mike Schilt every single day man making sure you know that that guys get them get a rest when they need it but it's also really tempting to go to your guys when you need to get those three outs um you know you see so now Torres down now both Suarez and Scott have pitched three of the last four days correct Scott didn't pitch yesterday but he had pitched the three before that uh pretty much everybody's been used that that inning from Sean Reynolds yesterday was pretty big yeah had a little control issues couldn't get the slider command going but got out of his jam that he got himself into and that was a big inning to save some other bullets so Jeremiah Strata should be pretty fresh and ready to go Brian Hoeing should be pretty fresh and ready to go how about a blowout that would be nice I mean you're not going to push Michael King too far you know hopefully he can be somewhat efficient and give you six and and with a big lead that would be the best way obviously to to get through today's game so Paulie's got a ronald report in our final hour but coming up next push back a little bit our smart baseball segment with you know Sarah's from the athletic is our Thursday edition of Ben & Woods continues on San Diego's number one sports station ninety seven three the fan all right final uh well not quite the final hour of Ben & Woods because we're going until 10 15 this year the Lestra and the eco water so Cal pregame show Sammy just popped in and said hello he's uh well underway in his preparations for his pregame show today I get you ready for the fourth game of the series between the Padres and St. Louis Cardinals by the way the season series will be decided today three three going into this last game all the marbles on the line now I don't think the Padres and Cardinals won up tied at the end of the year something would have had to go don't think there'll be a tiebreaker involved in this one but uh but it is the season series on the line all right because we talked to mason mccoy in our last hour we have pushed you know Sarah's back to the nine o'clock hour but he is on the line so Paulie if you would it's time for the super polished just to be named smart baseball weekly segment with you know Harris saris son of a bitch brought to you by seven mile casino just seven minutes from the ballpark by the bay in Chula Vista here's you know saris with Benin Woods on 97 3 the fair you know you know we have found though that now that there is no game 163 tiebreakers the season series numbers can actually end up being really important at the end of the year so we've been keeping a much closer eye on things like pothraise diamondbacks pothraise braves pothraise meds pothraise dodgers and how the season series is going in case it does end up in a tie after 162 games uh yeah and it could it could totally do that i what's weird is that there's uh not that much juice about like who's going to be in the playoffs um you know it's pretty it's pretty uh stratified right now but uh who gets what seat is uh really what's up for grabs it's going to be i mean the last week you know for us we've got three against the dodgers three against the diamondbacks and you know it's it's pick your poison i mean it really is it's it's you know you you've shown the ability to beat the dodgers this year you know but i i'm it's that weird time of year two as a fan you're like all right diamondbacks are playing the Mets my gut tells me i want the diamond but i also don't want the Mets to creep up it's a it's a weird position we get put in as sports fans sometimes especially baseball fans i think there's enough uh there's enough cushion there you want to be back to lose that's what i think too i did see there was actually a debate about this and i couldn't wrap my head around the debate they are they are electrically white hot right now and clutch and all of the things that uh that scare you to death you know if you're the Padres or the dodgers or anybody else well i mean the craziest thing for me is the one that i don't understand is they're leading the league and run scored um and you know you know that doesn't make sense to me when i think about the team i'm like yeah they're pretty good but leading the league i mean for like 40 more runs than the Yankees and it's funny i think the them and the Yankees couldn't be built more differently the Yankees have a pair of players and so do and judge that are having um one that maybe the the best the best sort of pair of seasons on one team that that has ever been in baseball and then you look at the other guys you're like what's going on there and then with Arizona you're like oh like everyone's pretty good you know like it's just one of those lines that's kind of hard to get through because you can't be like oh now i get to take a break you know you get like one or two breaks tops so um you know marte is kind of you know in the discussion for the mvp i think some of the injuries have taken them out of it and it's not like a front runner for it but he'll get boats and um jock has been resurgent there and they just they just put together a really good moment don't be asking you know because it's almost certainly going to come into play either in the nl west which has likely three playoff teams or the al central which has three playoff teams but the division is still up for grabs in that last week of the season you're going to have to make a decision probably whether you want to use your top starters that last weekend and go for a better seating or a division title or if you want to hold them back so they're fresh and ready for a wild card series of best of three where you don't want to be left without you know your top two pitchers because you pitched them on saturday and sunday where do you kind of in the debate of how valuable a buy is or home field advantages versus having your pitching rested and ready for the start of the playoffs where do you fall there listen i i'm gonna take you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna take acts around off it's like i'm gonna take that right i mean you go for it but you i mean how close do you have to be if you're two games back with three to play you may need to punt on the division knowing we can't chase something that we don't is not in our control hoping we get to the division and then now we don't have dill and cease for the you know for the wild card series yeah no that's i think it is interesting i you know i think it's almost mostly at last day of the season decision you know last day of the season day of the season if you're tied or you're one game back you know for the for the division and you have a tiebreaker then then i would pitch your guy because i then you if you win you get them back get into the second round you get a buy and buys are valuable because anybody can move them first rounds you know like we've seen that too like so um it's a short series anything can happen and and i know people have said you know oh you know the time off is bad i have not found that to be as conclusive as people think i think you you look back and you know all the braids the daughters or whatever recent examples but if you look across all the examples it's not clear that that time off is bad for you so um i would take the time off i would take the free round if i had the choice but yeah you're right i mean it's like the saturday starter you know if you start your guy saturday is he going to be is he going to be ready again for the wild card series or to lose so um you know the second to last day the third to last day those would be some interesting decisions yeah and also it uh it definitely affects bull pen usage down the stretch as well you know mike shilt the other night used robert sores up four runs and i i love it i i'm fine with it like i i don't want to mess around if i have a chance to get a dub take the first game of the series i'm doing it i'm doing it every single time i mean the three batter minimum changes all of that it just it affects everything i wanted to ask you though about our beloved closer bobby fastballs who again you know it kind of babbomed a little bit to death last night i mean singles you know three singles in a row with two outs like some nights it's just not your night uh but he's the whiffs are down a little bit for him what are you seeing if anything out of out of robert sores uh i don't know that it there's a real problem um here i will say that uh even last like you know if you look at his his career in a whole he does not have that sort of 30 35% strikeout rate uh of some of the elite closures um it's a little bit of kind of run suppression and like homer suppression yeah um as opposed to like a kind of a mason miller thing where he's like striking out 48 percent of the batters you see whatever you know it's a little bit it's a little bit different um you know uh it's uh it's it's called a four seam um but it it has that kind of um it has like kind of two-plane action and his best secondary which he doesn't throw that off him but uh his best secondary is a change up and change ups uh are interesting because they are linked with run suppression um but they are not linked as well with strikeouts so you know uh he would probably have more strikeouts um and be maybe a different picture maybe maybe a slightly better picture it uh a breaking ball is best secondary like a like some sort of slide or or something like that yeah i'm looking i'm looking right now to throws his sinker you know 14 percent of the time but i mean he's he's a fastball guy throws his chain he's only throwing 89 change ups all year and um yeah i i obviously it's been really successful for him this season i think he could mix it up a little bit more i mean what we're seeing among relievers is uh there's more and more relievers than have two or three pitches uh and try to and four pitches like trying to sort of mimic starters and if you think of like rice leg laziest over on the Braves he's not a guy who has the top envelope but he has four pitches and kind of attacks uh relieving almost at starting where you're trying to keep them off balance he throws a fastball so much is it as good a fastball as like mariana's cutter you know can he really throw it 80 90 percent of the time um if i were him i would try to find some other weapons that i'm comfortable throwing in the zone i mean a 93 mile an hour cutter that he never throws like i'd be interested to see what kind of a quality that was um and if he could get some confidence in it for him um you know stuff plus says that uh it's a decent pitch when he throws it um and uh and maybe throw a change up more often i'd like to rope a dope everybody in in the playoffs and he just comes out and busts out his his change up then i mean you know if you've ever faced faced a pitcher uh you know he's throwing all heaters and next you know he breaks out a yacker on you in the your second or second you're like good god dude where did that come from and how did you land that 65 pitches in but yeah i mean and maybe they could be doing stuff like that i have talked to pitchers where you know i've been like so what about the curveball and they're like oh well but you know the third the third time i see the league this year it's more and you're like wow you you kind of planned out this whole heater like i love that i think it's great what a weapon and think about what like Suarez and and all the pager they're doing right now they're facing guys with the teams that they're going to prop the face in the postseason too talking you know seris from the athletic with this year on 97 through the fan and today's a match if you had your new starting pitching rankings out for the final month of the season they also include you know opponents that they're going to face for people who are like picking up for fantasy and rotisserie purposes but today's match up is an interesting one get your thoughts on michael king against sunny gray sunny gray has kept the kind of the best numbers of any cardinals picture and michael king's been been solid all year long and continues to trend up here in the second half of the season this should be a pretty good one in st louis today yeah and there's some similarities in that um you know i can eat the sweeper is uh both of their best secondary pitches um and then they've uh they've kind of figured out their whole arsenal almost around uh around those sweepers and so you know for this year i think that uh king like early on uh he was trying to keep you know a little bit of uh velo in the tank you know because he was he was really uh sort of thinking about you know trying to pitch all year and uh we've seen it we've seen the velo actually sort of tick up over over the course of the year um and uh i think he's found his like ideal mix too like he's he's really throwing all four of his pitches like 25 percent of the time basically and that's what you know that's that just keeps everybody off balance and it's a little bit you know when i watch him i guess lefties i think it's a little bit more of a slog because he doesn't really want to throw that thinker so much but what he's found in the last month is a place to put that thinker even against lefties um and so he's still maintaining uh more of a sort of a you know 40 at 25 25 25 approach had a discussion about Blake Snell earlier in the show today and reports that he's probably gonna opt out again in free agency what do you think that this season has done for his value in the off season the slow start but of course obviously the the lights out second half with the no hitter our team's gonna be wary are they gonna be more willing to give them a long-term deal than they were this last off season how is this gonna go for Blake Snell? i don't know i mean you know the whole reason he got that weird uh two-year deal was because you know no one was sure what kind of how many endings you could project for him i think that most people thought he was an excellent pitcher and he that he's been excellent um yeah he's had some years before e r a but you know for his career he's a thousand innings of a three-two e r a for like snell i think most people realize he's a quality pitcher it's just been really kind of up and down 180 innings 107 128 180 and then this year it's going to be you know more like it's 107 you know so if you're going into this you're going to be like okay he's going to alternate maybe 150s and 100s and and 100s and so i should only pay him for that many innings and so that's going to be a discussion i guess a team with great depth in the minor leagues that says hey you know you can pitch for us when you're healthy and then we always have another option because we're a great developing team uh i don't know who that is so the Dodgers are saying the Dodgers yeah yeah they love they love actually signing they love signing we're trading for last now yeah yeah so you if you're the Dodgers are like well if one or snow or glass now are healthy we're golden if both of them are healthy that's our year you know i can't i can't see now i feel like that's an argument against a short-term deal if you sign them to a long-term deal you feel like we're probably going to get two of the longer seasons two of the shorter seasons but like the giants they're going to get them for one shortened season 30 million and they're not going to make the playoffs out of it i mean that was the worst possible like way you can sign like snow or teams refer short-term deals because they're just not stuck on something we'll you know catastrophic injury or or do you've never met a jb no one wants to happen yeah do you know they jb no could they could they add another huge contract on that i don't know if they can't oh well you know you are the best man thank you so much uh i'm i'm fully expecting to see bobby bobby sores uh turn into bobby bobby fastballs turn into bobby change-ups uh in close you just watch people just dying up there i mean just just dying uh but no i mean it's it's gonna be fun when man and uh appreciate your time as usual yeah i i love this laundry team i think this is um there's something about you know adding the contact to the power and then having you know mani come around and i just i want that like last a tattoo piece to the puzzle you know i i i don't want to get anybody thinking about a week got a week yeah like what like you you're like it's all there it's all there everything's there like you know i mean like the bullpen is amazing like get to teach back the lineup is really good and you know jackson marell's like late night jackson do you guys have a nickname for him yet for that oh he's got a million jackson barrel madness action jackson what did you say late night would you say well they had late night lemont here so there needs to be something i'm saying he's so clutched at the end of games yeah i mean and every and the product generally with this like you know more contact i feel like you know they didn't win last night but i i was watched and i was like you know they could win this oh yeah i was always in front of my marell maybe like yeah yeah like money marell you know appreciate it thank you so much i see there is you know seris from the athletic or weekly smart baseball segment brought to you by seven mile casino damn him midnight marell midnight marell's not bad he's never it's never midnight it's not that late games are shorter now so they don't go that long so here see we're stupid crazy fanatics you know seris is like the smartest baseball guy we know and so when he's like i love this pod i know i'm like oh everybody's to me i'm gonna get my hopes up everybody in the in the national media so pod race fans who are optimistic the small amount of that always believe in the pod race love the pod race everybody nationally also loves the pod race the only people who don't love the pod race pod race doomers who know unfortunately from experience something you know gonna go wrong yeah but for the most part the thought process nationally is the san Diego pod race are an extremely dangerous team and a very legitimate world series threat this year but we've heard that before we have we've heard that in the off season before we've heard a jp relars put together a world series contender many times we haven't heard it so often at the end of august in early september 2022 is the only time after trading for one so dough she even had the thought that the pod race could be a contender and even that year they get into september and just kind of backed in most people thought but they're still not going to be able to beat the dodgers or the fillies they were still a clear level below those teams now they did beat the dodgers but they didn't beat the fillies this year no one is saying there's a team that the pod race can't be in the playoffs and i believe it and they believe it most importantly they those 26 dudes they believe it and that's that's something you really haven't felt here in a while so don't know what it means could mean absolutely nothing it's exciting but it's very but again i will remind everybody that the 12 teams that make the playoffs and it's you know said we kind of kind of mostly know who those 12 are right now you know what i'll you know i'll list them off for you when we come back okay i love your list i will tell you the playoff teams that you know alluded to in his segment we'll get to that coming up all he's got around a report as well back after traffic here on 97-3 the fam spoiler alert here are your playoff teams we're a month away and you can still with the reasonable mathematic confidence say who the playoff teams as you know said in the national league there are only six teams that have a legitimate shot the meds are the the closest coming they have 13% chance of making the playoffs you could add every team's chances beyond the six you don't even get to 20% so in a normal world more than way too early to say this it's not though mathematically it is not your playoff teams Dodgers not even September yet Dodgers Phillies Brewers Diamondbacks Padres Braves yes that in the world of math that is hold on a very very strong possibility the Mets are literally about to play the Diamondbacks one more time just one more yeah yeah one more today they've missed their opportunity against the Padres and now they split two with the Diamondbacks they're not making up any ground they have the best chance of course of catching the Braves they're four games back is it possible yeah about 13% chance that they can do it but something but you know in the world of mathematics you're going to take a 87% chance if i'm asking you to bet a hundred bucks on something you're going to take the 87% favor but even money you know give me that give me the team that's an 87% favor yeah and that it's an 87% likelihood at this point or close to it that's the Dodgers Phillies Brewers Diamond it's not quite a certain but still pretty strong no team has less than an 81 and a half percent chance of making the postseason so your odds are it's going to be the Yankees Orioles guardians royals twins and Astros that make the playoffs the bread socks are the closest team out they're three games out right now 23 percent so one and four chance that Boston messes things up they sneak in and Seattle's got a even less than that chance of maybe catching Houston doesn't seem like they're going to so bro imagine being the Mariners with that 10 game lead that you had and the starting pitching glut that you have and you don't even make the playoffs combine those two leads together though and there is a much better than like coins flip chance that those will be the 12 playoff teams at the end of the year that i just listed there is certainly within the realm of possibility of anything happening that maybe the red socks or the meds or the mariner sneak in there but pretty much not and then everybody else is almost irrelevant the Tigers have gotten up to five percent the Cubs have been playing well they've gotten up to four percent barely even even worth mentioning you need to play off chances you need a rock rock totals 17 game winning streak to have a chance at it of course have officially fallen behind the Diamondbacks in percentage okay they've been ahead of them for weeks now but Diamondbacks 96.6 percent chance in the playoffs Padres 96.4 okay hit the panic button i'm terrified they are a terrifying team but Padres still have a much higher chance to win the world series according to fan graphs than the Diamondbacks no wonder why that is i don't know 5.7 percent for the Diamondbacks 7.9 percent for the Padres must be pitching projections or schedule strength of schedule down the road potentially could be part of it yeah but that should be reflected in the playoff on yeah that's true if they have the Diamondbacks ahead it must be something specifically to the postseason that they like the Padres chances better in the playoffs than the Diamondbacks oh man you ready for this yeah the playoffs are excruciating it's excruciating and the last like two weeks of September it's just going to be bonus playoff type anxiety yeah there's nothing worse so hopefully there's not a ton of angle like what i'm trying to tell you right now turn the anxiety meter down at the moment there'll be plenty of time for anxiety later yeah but right now when you're 96.4 percent if you're if you're having anxiety now i don't know what to tell you what happens when every game is do or die every season it's every single pitch every single pitch of the playoff when the Padres hit i can relax because you can't lose the game you can't lose the game when you're hitting well i know i so the way i watch games is when the Padres are ahead i'm stressed when they're pitching because you're you're fine as long as the other team doesn't come back when the Padres are trailing i'm stressed when they're hitting because then they need to score runs they need to make something happen so i'm always fine on all i mean you know unless it's you know five six seven nothing right i'm offenses like i can take everything every ground ball that's hit every fly ball that's hit every pitch in the dirt when we're on the bump is when it's just the most excruciating makes my hair fall out watching those games uh which you know listen it's like a drug dude you you met strum said he was the best drug i've ever i've never taken any drugs playoff baseball last year was like a drug and i have to have to have you got that massive huge save that we had them on nobody expected them to call his number and everyone else was down and came in the country was like who is this guy yeah and he just nailed it down oh it was just ridiculous so yeah man the uh the serotonin hits real good in the playoffs but now remain calm remain calm for the time being i've been fairly calm you have you've done a pretty good fairly calm bill the Padres have given you no real reasoning they've played a stretch of baseball since the all-star break beautiful without really fail have won two game losing streak since the all-star break there's been no chance to actually panic which is let some inappropriate panicking like after a four or three loss yesterday on a walk-off single by Nolan Aronado it's not a reason to panic that's a baseball game Katrina says math at any point let alone this early in the morning makes my head explode this is his this is his brain though this is like it is it's beautiful mind all the time that got the little equation was all around and i am in place yeah i am that is not me i'm a pure emotions pure josh says what if you had a 3.6 percent chance of totaling your car well you'd never leave the uh you'd never leave the house sure you would 3.6 no that would be bad that's a high number well let me put it this way you have too much math say you have a 3.6 let's but every day no you don't really yeah i mean that that if you had a 3.6 percent chance of totaling your car then you would total your car once a month because you're driving 30 times a month you're right you're right you're right you're right you're right you're totally your car once a month you would expect to totally your car once a month now the pod race are only playing this game once though there's only one playoff chase so you can feel like this is one of those days you're probably not going to total your car today but one day eventually if you had a 3.6 percent if the pod race had to go through the playoff chase a hundred times between now and october they will miss the playoffs like three times yeah yeah yeah it is tough but fortunately they only have to do it once and you're almost certainly gonna land on one of those other 97 this one time that you have to go through it nobody says and you're a nerd too this is i get what goose gosses just saying full word to the pulley i fully fully get it now because he has broken my brain all right go to we got to get the right no you do not want a 3.6 percent chance of totaling your car every time you go out into the roadways we need multiple cars every single year we'd all be dead essentially all right this hour on 97 3 the fan is brought to you by floor and decor unbeatable prices unmatched in stock selection floor and decor has more styles of laminate vinyl tile wooden stone for anyone looking for the right look at the right price your next beautiful space is share with us just let you know what that is when we come back on san diego's number one sports station 97 3 the fan getting ready for potrays and cardinals now just uh about 40 minutes away from sammy's pre-game show eco water so cal pre-game show you'll have the dodgers and oriles wrapping up their series tonight in l_a_ they play almost no day games have you noticed that midweek in l_a_ yeah they get night game night game night game that'll be a 7 10 start uh you've got whoever they're playing like the visiting team usually is staying locally close yeah they come down either they come down to san diego or get an interleak series against uh feels like it all the sometimes they there has to be sometimes it's the last series and then they they're going home right get away to notice that they play a lot of they don't play a lot of like one ten no they do not only sundays really and they very rarely you get four thousand people there right but you make all the other teams play getaway games of course why not the dodgers and i always wondered that uh met some diamondbacks wrap up their series that's a 1240 start in arizona uh with uh two out of three on the line for that one but we've on like the braves and fillies huge series starts uh four gamer tonight in philadelphia uh christopher sanchez and charlie morton in the first one that's a 340 start actually uh east coast of 640 but that's a big series because the uh the braves obviously are trying to hold off the meds hopefully you know trying to chase down the potteries and diamondbacks for better positioning the fillies have been a little iffy lately and you know they're trying to battle for the first or second seed five and five last ten yeah man they're they're going through it a little bit uh giants and brewers wrap up their series in milwaukee and that's an eleven ten start today so those are the kind of key games on a thursday uh coming up in major league baseball in addition to the pot raise and cardinals completing their season series tickets as low as two dollars i was gonna say no game more key than this one in st louis how's the weather we looking good everything you know gonna go off without a hitch according to acue weather 84 degrees and sunny oh it's a beautiful day not quite as bad as it's been beautiful day in st louis no excuses today fellas i rode for you you with paul rindle hi paul all right two stories from the world of sports that we haven't gotten to yet we'll start off in major league baseball and one story that you didn't know you needed you're laughing beyond it's the rindle report hey paul how you doing okay how are you on 97 3 the fan are you ready to blast the mood i need some help please that was good can i get a whole year all right all right all right indeed good morning my friends good morning start off in the national football league still what week and a half away yeah thursday right oh week away oh wait yeah week from today yes one week from today oh it's your college football team's ratings yeah there is college football tonight week one starts with a few thursday matchups i'm gonna take a look at the schedule for the weekend indeed uh but we'll start off in the nfl now here in san diego we are no strangers to the uh conversation around unretiring numbers did you see that the new york giants have unretired their number one i did for rookie wide receiver malike neighbors from lsu i didn't know this that was the first number retired in professional football history wow and they have retired it was ray flarity's number one love ray flarity and big ray flarity fans i mean that what he brought the presence just a beast he brought to that team is unparalleled so uh malike neighbors wanted to wear number one he wore number eight when he was at lsu but daniel jones wears number eight so you're not going to get that one he wore number nine through spring and summer workouts but that belongs to their kicker graham gano so he asked the family the flarity family for permission to wear number one they granted him permission and the new york giants have unretired that number it's wild that's wild that you could do that you can't that's pretty cool you're not allowed to just did it but why why would you do it for a a rookie he says thank you to the flarity family for allowing you to wear number one for the new york giants i understand the responsibility and i will do everything in my power to honor the flarity family and this organization i will wear the number with great pride can't wait for the season to start who is ray flarity he joined the giants in 1929 after wait after cheers is the ganzaga basketball coach i was either coach he was their coach yeah now he became a football coach he later became a professional but it was a player credited with the behind-the-line screen pass in the two platoon subsystem the screen passes brilliant he was a basketball coach or a football coach basketball and then he won i'm reading ESPN says he was the this is from uh there according to the time on your play for the giants in 1929 then became the head coach of ganzaga basket in 1930 or football he says basketball i know they didn't have a football that mean they also he was the football coach they did have a football team back then he also coached the basketball team for a season and then he went back to the giants and played four more years he was inducted in the pro football hall of fame in the 70s retired number and they have unretired it hey that's pretty cool that you could do that yeah it's really cool i mean if you acquired like someone who had worn one their whole career like that was their signature number yeah and do you want to put them in but i'm sure he's wrong he was just picking from any number i'm sure he's long passed away yes he cared he died in 1994 okay he doesn't care his family his family is his bad ass this kid should all retired numbers once the guy dies then you just unretire it i really have no problem with it what number is uh leo dvries he's not number six is he just he barry still alive so they wouldn't do that so you could ask for permission sure could always the garvey family i don't know that he'd get it but he could ask i doubt very much he would is this a smart move by the flarity family to raise awareness for right flarity who i even i had never heard of ray flarity what would be the need to raise awareness for ray flarity he's already in the pro football whole thing everyone's really talking about him who cares those like his accomplishments and such and bro do you get do you guys think that there was a financial component to this and he was a college friend of being Crosby apparently oh was he yes was there away 30 years ago maybe he came down to delmar one day to the races being was there a uh uh financial component didn't say okay just said he asked for permission from the family and he was granted permission adam paul says you should know the history of and that's all he says you're right all right uh so that was the pro football over to college football i was uh sitting around yesterday scrolling the gram and i came across this post from draft kings draft king sports book i've seen this in the past they do it every year the all name team in college football the all name has nothing to do with your skill how you play on the field it is just about your name of course the captain of the team the quarterback is a general booty general booty general booty of course is the nephew of former u.s seat quarterback john david booty oh it's there it was there a josh booty is josh booty is there is his brother he's also a nephew of josh booty i had to look a lot of these names up i'm like there's no way this general booty was at oklahoma for a couple of years now i think he only played one game though now he's transferred where is he at uh u l man ro yeah starting quarterback of u l man roe there is a wide receiver called decoldist crawford that's one vertical bad ass the apostrophe no dee dee el dee st crawford there's also the other wide receiver on the all name team is the wide receiver out of defiance college uh the realist clark that is d_a apostrophe r_e_a_l_ y_s_t_ the realist and decollist is incredible and then fat i'd be looking for cats the dreamer to pair with the realist the dreamer the dreamer and the realist i mean did the chubby tight end is right house rowdy beers rowdy beers rowdy beers oh that's great that's i mean like mini pretty much i mean pretty much gronk was rowdy beers yes when he played some other funny names offensive lineman tiger shanks dodge saucer hey's hammer dodge saucer how does cell saucer uh s like flying saucer s a u s e r s a to it mr mrs. bility everyone's yelling at us so did we see the key in peel sketch i've never seen it oh you haven't seen this uh that's old i haven't seen i'll show it to you during a break all right the ability family has a lot of possibility for hijinks like mobility i mean you just name like author ability who goes by a ability yeah i like mobility reach there's not a lot of zax has response uh that's good very well done responsibility the f-word oh yes it's an important quality to have but there'd be a rough childhood yeah all right uh finally mask you guys you guys big fan of capri suns master kid i capri sun in my lunch bag probably every day for five or six years give me the pacific cooler all day long i haven't had a original fruit punch they didn't have any of the other uh they didn't have extra fancy designs when we were kids capri sun flavored capri sun one flavor and that was it but they're iconic but pouches there was also some weird strawberry one that was not great there was also the inherent problem though with capri suns yeah and that was the straw the straw going into the pouch pouch was a brilliant idea you wanted to drink it just because it had a pound stab the straw through the pouch whole thing but you had to nail it just right there was a lot that you got wrong with the pouch and the straw that's true there was the point so the one i don't always take the one out of the box that didn't have the straw in the back oh wow you're just pulling you're trying to gnaw your way through it to just squeeze a little in your mouth bro that was or it would fall like fall out or somewhere or somewhere transit and then you're like uh does anybody have a pair of scissors because i have to cut a little sleeve here and suck it down real fast worry no more and i'm not sure how i feel about this i guess it doesn't really matter i can't remember the last time i had a capri sun but capri sun uh they say they're they're targeting adults they're going to find to come out with bottles plastic bottles arriving soon in stores they kind of look like um like prime drinks or something yeah they're like i put a picture up on the stream if you're watching us right now but yeah fruit ponch strawberry lime pacific cooler they're coming out with bottles abandoning i don't know if they're fully abandoning the pouches or still keeping them and just adding the bottles but uh they got announced for an upcoming trade show in the snack world 12 ounce bottles they're gonna start with the three flavors fruit ponch strawberry kiwi and my beloved pacific cooler no straw poking require yep it says just unscathed we make everything so easy for these kids these days why is it that uh you know those coca-cola freestyle machines yeah they never have they never capri sun available in those they got like every other drink they have to man are they coke product uh-huh probably not then i don't think so but you've never founted i've never seen founted capri sun in my life no i haven't either yeah it's so delicious though wonder why they haven't tried that spring training facilities out in puree like when we go out for fantasy camp they have the soda fountain with like ten different items it's all gatorade every single one of them skater it's so awesome that's great i uh i had a capri sun recently um and they don't taste the same not the same no they're not the same because when we were kids yeah your taste buds have changed no quite a bit they don't taste the same you nothing does you're well no that's because your taste buds have changed over the years they've taken out all the bad stuff a lot of the bad stuff that we stuff the goods aka the good stuff from when we were kids yeah everything tastes different no i just reminds me he had a capri sun almost a year ago that's right i had uh we had a tier one basketball game on my birthday my wife showed up with orange slices and capri suns for after the game they still hit man i think they're still delicious pretty elite snack to be honest but yeah i mean i couldn't if i showed up at a tier one game sunday with orange light i mean you get ranked out of a dugout yeah so once you got the straw in it was also the tiniest straws now you don't bring them handle it after they did have a background then it's okay handle wouldn't be caught dead at a tier one game by the way you'd really know you'd really have to drink it slowly yeah because you it was but remember but remember the the best part of squeezing it all and getting every little drop out of it i i mean the stab would you yeah i'd get about 50 percent yeah i was about 50 percent which is a whole fame i think the war so sometimes you stab all the way through all the way and then you have you have to you have to jimmy and down in there then you're going to have beer bong yeah your beer bonging pre-sud yeah well listen you know we're like i said they're making everything too easy on these kids they need to know the struggle that we had trying to get the stupid straw in your drink it eat up your whole lunch sometime you do this sometimes they have the ones you're like i cannot get this but you know it's too hard so yeah it's oh snap and you're like i'm done i'm dead not drinking anything that's great thank you paulley you're very welcome all right we are almost usually we'd be we'd actually already be done with the show at this point and turning things over to annie and elston but instead we're going to come back for one more award-winning segment oh oh if you only knew what we had planned for our last segment it is blow you away it is incredible i mean checking the rundown anywhere look at the rundown right now it says 954 hard out to any and else this is going to be carrying on my wayward son there'll be truth if you were gone oh there's something to plan to get sammy in here yeah we're going to save us here to save us coming back with a little bit more better ones before the pre-game show next year on 97.3 the fam well we're screwed everybody i don't know if you guys saw the uh breaking news from major league baseball today just now actually young gravy has signed an official one-day contract to become a cardinals player today's that day young gravy now i tweeted i feel like this should help us i feel like it should work in our favor that young gravy is now a card well if he's like batting second and playing short we're definitely that's an advantage to the pot raise now i have a question again i read that tweet last week said that the hawk to a girl has said the hawk to a girl um has declined a date with young gravy and that's when i was like i'm ready for the asteroid to come and ready it's fine i've lived a great life we all have who's the bigger tiktok star young gravy or young sam levitt over here i think young gravy yeah is that what he is is i thought he was a rapper i well here's what i know about young gravy he he did have and maybe poly can help me out i know is he he did he did have a song at least a couple of years ago that was very big on tiktok i don't know if it got played on the radio if you would hear it anywhere outside but on tiktok it was a it was a fairly big song it was my role somebody has to find it please poly i don't really remember what it was like it was a couple of years ago at this point i bet it's terrible i bet it is horrible i guess i was assuming maybe not young gravy like you know if that's a rap name yeah i thought it was a rap i assuming i like 400 pound guy would be young gravy yes he's got like a size 22 waist the guy yeah he's demure dude he's just weight like fin and he's got he's got uh he's got very like blonde black golden hair i remember guy wouldn't know gravy he was pouring all over his mashed potatoes he never eaten any in his life yeah and there was like he looks like my son if he was 22 i don't want i don't want to get into this raw and malnourished yeah it's like there was i see that voice coming out of that guy didn't uh you're stealing for brick-ass i like it and i'm like the chorus is like the course is like oh gravy you're so vicious i don't remember but there was also a thing on on tick-tock where like and i don't want to get this wrong but he was like like part of his thing was like the older women were into young gravy something like that i don't remember think i just realized what the name means and the connotation behind it so then i'll explain it to you off here thank you when you get there because i can't really do it here during the minister tonight tonight i can do that well we're still talking but i don't understand what what does this mean that they signed him to a contract well i mean it's just like the Mets head hot it's an honorary one-day contract it's like the Mets head hot like a make a wish kid for the day right right like but they brought him out why can't he just throw out the first pitch so imagine you're in the hot yeah exactly what you imagine you're in clubhouse you're trying to get your work in you know you you have that exciting walk-off last night but you're you're tired man you're not having a good year and then young gravy strolls through the clubhouse you're like i just want i just got to get my tea work bro i maybe inspired i mean you know they're younger younger players this may be yeah it's great old goldsmith is elated oh hell yeah you know i don't know what's up young i really i don't think i don't think young gravy is of the celebrity status where any mason win might be excited about mason win my major i don't think so that's great dude i was great someone gonna bring me a pizza usually if i'm working at this time on a thursday someone's brought me a pizza that's true but here we are still talking no pizza but we do have sami leavitt he's getting ready for the uh eco water so cal pre-game show for ten minutes away from sam leavitt and uh yeah i mean fun series sami obviously a lot of a lot of drama the last three days for the pod rais in the cardinals yeah uh look uh yesterday's game felt really winnable i mean i thought the issue the name of the game yesterday was just missing opportunities right i mean one for ten with runners in scoring position and and it wasn't about just the the ninth inning and you guys discussed the the bunt earlier and i had pretty much the same take in the post-game show look there is an argument for bunting there is an argument for not and i think they're very strong arguments on both sides and look if j kronanworth hits a fly ball deep enough to get the run-in we're probably here the next morning saying oh what a what a great baseball play right what unselfish baseball you win the game you set it up you execute late another great pod raise come back when it didn't work out and like that that's the thing that i think is is interesting is we move into the final month they have been so good in the second half i i don't want it to get lost in the day-to-day when they lose right that's the tough that's the tough part you're in a really tight race right now yes and the diamondbacks have not slowed down they had another terrific win yesterday but you know you got to keep winning you also got to keep it in perspective that at this moment they're not necessarily fighting for their playoff lives they're they're fighting for seating they got to keep playing well but you know you can lose a game now you want to go out with the series today one thing that this team is done consistently is they've stayed on their plan jerks and pro far did this exact thing same thing earlier in the year it didn't work out mike silt was questioned about it jerks and was questioned about it so when it happened last night i knew exactly what was happening right they've stayed consistent um game one they're hacking early they are all over michael is his fastball they're not all the hits and they're not all you know doubles but they they have stayed consistent with what screws teams is when they try to play a different brand of baseball than what got them you know if you get to the playoffs the post-season or a big series against arizona or la and everyone's up there yakking you know trying to yak one out of there to win a win a win a ball game that's when the team is but we know that in the playoffs that home runs or they're huge absolutely huge in the post-season we can hit them we can absolutely hit them yeah i mean it's not it's not that they can't they just i think i think selling out for me as they said earlier i don't mind jerks and bunting i like that he mixed it up like he may swing away one day he may bunt another day if that was a playoff game though i want jerks and bunting there i want jerks and swinging away when the season's on the line you got to have your best guys swinging what i feel like in a playoff game it's if i feel different yeah i i also thought the situation yesterday with hellsley on the mound the guy gets a lot of strikeouts like you do put jake in a situation there where if he strikes out it kind of ruins the point correct of the bunt so i thought the fact that it was hellsley there a big strikeout guy yeah you could have gone either way with it i thought the bottom line is like if if they score the run on a sack fly i think we're sitting here this morning saying great baseball play yeah we're still playing the game because it just went to x-ray with no one there i don't yeah and look you made a good point earlier about the bigger inning it's a it's a fair point when you bunt you do take away or maybe it was yours my point uh i agreed with the job i've i accentuated and agreed with the point it's a good point it does take some air out of the balloon when you talk about a bigger inning in that spot and we have seen them in those types of situations get more than one right hundred percent you're in the bottom of the inning and you know one run wins the game it's over it's a walk-off there's more of an argument bunt them over get that one run in the top of the inning the other team gets to bat again yeah and you don't want to eliminate the possibility of scoring two or three because you might need two or three to win that game still so that's another reason why bunting was not i think the best idea and i thought the quote from jerks and after the game was interesting i love the two people i was over for yeah i mean you know there was that the the moment against uh minnesota on the tuesday night the second game when they were down by two they had two on runners-on-first and second remember he showed up or he showed yeah he showed then he got ahead of the count two and oh and he hit a home run so look mike sholt has been very consistent in a number of areas and this is one of them letting his letters play yep and make decisions and sometimes that's going to work sometimes it won't and more often not this season it has absolutely absolutely has done it don't get crazy how many times have you heard of a ball player go yeah i was over four but only takes one to get out of a slot sure hundred percent is one swing to turn everything around and we see that all the time and again though for him the the last guy you want to try to get right against is probably ryan hellsley i mean yeah anything can happen he's giving up all hits he's giving him home runs it's going to happen but you know i i certainly understand his logic and again the fact that it happened earlier in the season i went yeah this is exactly what he said the last time so i knew it was coming yeah and look hindsight's 2020 of course if they execute late like they've done so often we're good we're probably barely mentioning bottom line though is uh thirteen down five to go in the streak of eighteen games in eighteen days the pod rays have done absolutely nothing to hurt their playoff chances in in this stretch no which is kind of what you were looking for there's still at ninety six point four percent and the rest of this week with the dodgers and diamondbacks playing one another beginning tomorrow there's a real opportunity to series huge to take you know to take command of one especially if Arizona loses you know two three games so it's a big week there's no doubt about it so we'll see yeah you finish this road trip strong you will gain ground on someone or maybe a little bit of ground on both but in some way it's going to help you by the end of the week yeah i know it sounds weird for pod rays fans if i'd be rooting for Arizona to lose i mean just it feels like getting home via that well i mean it's a much more likely scenario it's hard to it's hard to get more likely so i know hard to pick up four games in twenty seven days diamondbacks go well that the problem too is the diamondbacks would also gain ground on the dodgers shouldn't have some stuff can't have everything all right we are um we are done and Sammy's going to take over this seat and we'll bring you the eco water so cal pre-game show coming up next and then the game the post-game show and we will be back tomorrow morning uh for the friday edition of Ben & Woods starting at 6 a.m. for
