[Music] All right, thank you, guys, and welcome to this week's Reef and Travelers with me, Michael, 20-minute, the Grim Reaper. And last time, I saw it being a little bit late with this last couple of weeks. I've been a bit hectic in my life. I ended up getting a lurgy. I was really sick. I don't know whether it was COVID or cold or whatever it was. But I basically had three different types of illness over the course of a week. I started off with like sinus, pressure in my head and all that stuff. And then a couple of days later, that would go, and then I would get a fever and a sore throat. And then that would go, and then I would start with a cough and other things. Yeah, it was just awful. It went on for about a week. Yeah, and then I started feeling a bit around the Friday, and I thought, you know, I'll go into work. Seeing some film a bit better. And you know, my plan was to actually do this episode like a couple of weeks back. Well, yeah, just over a week ago. But I was that fed up when I went in on the Friday. So I mean, I do work long hours. I leave the house anywhere between half five and half six in the morning. I don't get in to half six is the minimum, like the earliest I can get in when I leave work. I'm out the house sometimes, 12, 13, 14 hours a day. I want to get paid for eight of them. So, you know, I'll sit and think, and this is absolute shite. So a lot of the weekend I looked at different options and, you know, thinking, what can I do to change this shitty lifestyle situation that I've managed to get myself into. And the only one that I came up with was I'm going to go in on Monday and tell them to show up for the job of their ass. We checked in and now I've had four weeks to find myself a new job, which, you know, it's gone all good. Oh, that's fine. You know, it's nothing to worry about. Not going to end up without a job or anything like that. In fact, actually the work place I do work came back. And they want to restructure my job. So something that would suit us a bit better and, you know, try and work around us. Which I have sort of, you know, accepted for now. But just as a safety net, so I can actually find that better job. You know, I don't want to rush into another job where I ended up in the same situation. So yeah, so I spent like last week looking for work and stuff like that. And then at the weekend, it's just gone. We would have waited for the weekend and yeah, it's a bucket, you know. You know, because it's not like that I completely despise where I'm working. You know, it is quite a good place to work. The work is slightly interesting, but I mean, don't let the name fill you. I have turned some pretty big jobs in my time. I've been working for like well over 20 years. I started working when I was 16. And yeah, I went to see on fishing boats and container boats. And yeah, I've always done the danger jobs. They're hard, heavy lifting, manual engineering type of work. I was at sea for five years. And yeah, well, I had an accident. I got tangled up in a load of chains. And yeah, I just could have started short. So it's like my right leg got what's classed as degloved. If you don't know what that means, it's like, you know, taking a glove off your hand. Brony, that glove is your skin and everything else. And you know, that happened to be like, so I ended up with like, yeah, it could have been a limp and stuff like that. But that still never stopped us doing the danger jobs. Because after I worked at sea, I was laid up for nearly a year while it all healed. And then the servers, I got back on my feet. I decided that, you know, what I'm going to do? I could sort of live on the disability of my life and live off handout. So I can, you know, find some work around it, like I always find a way. And yeah, that's what I did. The only thing I knew I'd do was fix things. I mean, by the age of 13, because of my dad, he is always trying to build the perfect camper. You know, I was stripping down transit vans right down, engine out, right down the chassis by the age of 13. So, you know, the only thing I knew how to do, apart from being at sea was, you know, fixing cars. So I became a mechanic for a few years. You heard a bit of a gummy leg, but I saw it like, awesome. I used to wear the old hockey shin pads to protect it. You know, it was all, it all worked. And then, you know, my career progressed and I got started getting into design. And then I ended up sort of traveling Europe, fixing hydro turbines. Of summer, I ended up doing a couple of year working on nuclear plants, you know, doing designs. We're actually working in the boilers, in active areas and stuff like that. Yeah, I've done some weird shit at my time. You know, now I'm just, you know, sat at a desk, designing machines that make fun, which doesn't sound that exciting. But yeah, so that's it. I just need something a bit more exciting, a bit more hands-on that doesn't take up all me time, basically, you know, a job that I enjoy doing. Not just sitting there, putting fucking tolerances on fucking shaft joints and, yeah, weld symbols on bits of fucking framework. I mean, it's, yeah, it's a good job, but it's just, just shite. So yeah, apart from that, I was good in the world. It made me, made me mother, Ben, went to see Red Fang on Tuesday, that was, oh my god, that was fantastic. He's there. We decided to go right to the front as well, which, I mean, I think it was maybe four years ago. Just before Covid struck, we went to a festival in Belgium, and I officially retired from Moshpits. At the festival because I went to say "unflux" at three o'clock in the afternoon and I went right to the front. Got to the barre there. It was absolutely fantastic. I was stood right in front of Scotty. It wasn't felt. Now I was brilliant. But the day after, I couldn't move my neck. I couldn't move my shoulders. I was absolutely knackered. And that was only the first day of the festival. We still had three more days after that. Which, you know, luckily, we're in Houdin, Europe. Where the laws are a bit less strict. We had some friends who also went to the festival. But they instead of flying to Belgium like we did, they flew to Amsterdam. Bought a load of weed. And then got on the train from Amsterdam to Belgium. I bumped into them. I was like, "Oh, there's a explained everything that I couldn't move." And he went, "Yeah, have this." You know, he gave us a little cheeky eighth, which that saved us that festival. It really did save us so thanks, Tezil. Yeah, me and my main band, we went right to the front of the gorilla for a red funk. Oh, I was brilliant. But to be fair, I wasn't really that sad afterwards, you know. I figured out that I did the right amount of motion for what my body could take. And like, really, our red funk, they like a, you know, a doom band from Oregon, I think. And there's laugh, because my main band is from America. He's from Tucson, Arizona. And the band was actually that loud that the pier couldn't keep up. So the vocals were very low. And me, I mean, it was shouting, you know, "Turn your vocals up in his American accent." And the dude from Red Fang was like, "Wow, you know, we've came all the way to Manchester to be heckled by an American." Well, they worked because they actually turned the speakers round, so they were blending old faces. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I think of it. My right is a little bit, doesn't seem a bit right. I don't know whether they're affected or not. But yeah, it'd be right. We'll get over there. Oh, Grace, don't tell me it's in a rabbit's shade. So let's get into these rivalries. Again, which our team rivalries this week, and I'm going to bring you the rivalry of the Broncos versus the Steelers. Now, the last one I brought was the Cowboys 49ers, and they fell in line with my ex-team of Destiny series. This one, I've had to jump again, because the next one that I should really have done was a charges rivalry, and I was struggling to find a decent rivalry in the conference as good as what some of these are. So I've skipped the year, Winford Steelers, and I could have went to the Raiders versus the Steelers, but I've already done the Raiders. I want to try and get as many teams in this series as I can, you know, without double it up. I've doubled up on the Cowboys. I've doubled up on a couple, probably by the end of I'll get all these done. So yeah, I'm going to bring you the Broncos versus the Steelers rivalry. And this is a national football league rivalry between the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the rivalry stemmed from the eight playoff matches between the two teams, some of which featured upset victories, of the eight means six resulted in the winner eventually advancing to the Super Bowl. And this is the, you know, the way that I want to do these conference rivalries is concentrate more on the playoff rounds, rather than the league rounds, they're the regular season games. So these two teams first met in the playoffs during the 1977 divisional round in Denver's NFL playoff debut, where they defeated the Steelers 34 to 21, as quarterback Craig Martin scored two touchdowns against the Steelers' fables steel curtain defense. But on the other hand, Denver's orange crush defense forced three interceptions, three interceptions from Telly Bradshaw. And then a media rematch then took place in the 1978 divisional round, and thanks to six Pittsburgh sacks, and Bradshaw's two touchdowns and 272 yard performance, the Steelers defeated the Broncos 33 to 10. And in both instances, the winner eventually faced Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, with the Broncos losing the Super Bowl 12, but the Steelers win in Super Bowl 13. So in the first meeting in 1977, Denver scored first after the Broncos receiver, John Schultz blocked a punt from Rick Engels, and recovered the ball on the Steelers' 17-yard line to set up running back Rob Lynch's 7-yard version touchdown. Pittsburgh responded with a 56-yard drive, including a 19-yard reception by tight end Benny Cunningham on fourth down and won, to tie the score. And the quarterback Telly Bradshaw's one-yard version touchdown. And in the second quarter, Broncos defensive tackle, Lille Alsando Aceido, forced a fumble from Franco Harris with linebacker Randy Gradisher, recovering in return in five yards before fumbling himself. The second fumble was just covered by Tom Jackson, who returned it 25 yards to the Pittsburgh 10-yard line. On the next player running back, Otis Armstrong ran the ball into the end zone to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead. However, Pittsburgh quickly struck back. It started with Jim Smith's 28-yard kickoff return to the Steelers' 34-yard line. Bradshaw then hit John Stalworth with a 21-yard completion, and Harris ripped off a 20-yard burst before he finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game 14-40 with 1 minute and 41 seconds left in the half. Third quarter, the Broncos drove 52 yards to the Pittsburgh 1-yard line, only to lose the ball when Jim Jensen was stuffed for no gain by Jack Lambert, Jim Allen on the fourth down. But after the punt, they drove 33 yards to go 21-14 on Craigmont's 30-yard touchdown passed to Riley Odom's. The nearly only in the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh managed to tie the game with a 48-yard catch by Stalworth, setting up Bradshaw's one-yard touchdown pass to tie the Atlantic Brown. First Jim Turner put the Broncos up 24-21 by kick and 4 yard field goal with 7 minutes and 17 left on the clock. When Jackson's intercepted a pass from Bradshaw and returned it 32 yards to the Steelers 9 yard line, setting up Turner's 24 yard field goal to make the score for 27-21. Pittsburgh and June drive Jackson struck again, intercepted another pass and returning this one to 17 yards to the Steelers 5-3. Rather than sitting on their one score lead trying to run the clock with running players, Denver took to the air, scoring a game clinching touchdown on Martin's 34 yard pass to Jack Doulbin with 1 minute 44 seconds left on the clock. Had his finished again with 92 rushing yards, 4 receptions for 20 yards and a touchdown, Martin only completed 11 of 23 of his passes but he threw for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. This was the first postseason meeting between the Steelers and the Broncos. So the next playoff meeting between these two was September, sorry September, December the 30th 1978 and the year after, where the Steelers dominated the Broncos by gaining 425 yards of tall offense and dominated Denver's touchdown quarterback Craig Martin so efficiently that his team gained just 49 yards on the first five possessions before he was replaced by Naughty Sweet's in the second quarter, he ended the game and ended up getting sacked five times. So after Denver scored first on a field goal, Pittsburgh responded by driving 66 yards in eight players to score on run and back Franco Harris's one yard touchdown run. Given the team a 6-3 lead after Roy Guerrero missed the extra point. Then the Steelers next drive had his run 18 yards to the end zone, scored second touchdown. In the second quarter the Steelers increased their lead to 16-3 with Guerrero's 24-yard field goal. However, linebacker Tom Jackson later recovered a fumble from Pittsburgh quarterback Terry Pratchett on the Steelers' point and yard line where the Broncos went to score on David Preston's 3-yard touchdown run which made the score 16-10. The Steelers responded with a second field goal of the day taking it to 19-10, going into half-time. In the third quarter, Denver mounted their most like promising driver of the day, advancing the ball 73 yards, presented up no points when Joe Green blocked Jim Turner's 29-yard field goal attempt. In the fourth quarter, Pratchett threw two touchdowns, the first 45-yarder to wide receiver John Stollworth, then Dennis Winston recovered a fumble from Denver's Rick Upchurch on the insurance kickoff, setting up Pratchett's 38-yard touchdown to wide receiver Lynn Swan. Pratchett completed 19 of the 29 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns, while Stollworth had 10 receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown and had his rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns. So this was the second postseason mean between these two, which was in Denver when it last year both, who was the Steelers that progressed to actually win the Super Bowl. Next we enter the 1980s to 1990s John L. Ware and legendary Bronco Capac John L. Ware made his NFL debut against the Steelers in 1983. The future Hall of Fame had completed one of eight passes for 14 yards, was sacked four times and intercepted once. Back up Steede Berg eventually led the Broncos to a 14-10 victory. Not the best starts, but after that L. Ware also made his playoff debut against the Steelers in the 1984 divisional round, heading into the match Denver finished 13-3 and were favored against the nine and seven Steelers. In that game L. Ware passed for 184 yards and scored two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice and sacked four times in Denver's 17-24 upset. The two teams will meet again in the 1989 divisional round, this time however L. Ware performed well with 239 passing yards, 44 rushing yards, one touchdown, one interception. Mel Patten's one yard score sealed the Broncos 24-23 win and Denver eventually made it to the Super Bowl 24 in a losing effort lost again and that was also the final playoff game from the Steelers coach Chuck Knoll. So in the 1984 playoff game in 1983, game that they had wasn't a playoff game, but it was one constraint on the playoff games. So the 1984 playoff game, the Broncos got the first chance to score on the opening drive which Roland Jones sacked Steelers quarterback Mark Malone forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive end. Andre Tan's end on the Steelers 23-yard line, but Denver only gained one yard in the next three players with Rich Kalismiss and the 39-yard field goal attempt. On the next player, Denver's Tom Jackson recovered a fumble snap from Malone on the Steelers 22 to set up quarterback John Helway's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jim Wright. Pittsburgh responded by moving the ball 62 yards to the Broncos 11-yard line where Gunny Anderson's 28-yard field goal made the score 7-3. Denver then drove to the third and goal from the Steelers 6-yard line only to lose the ball when Elway threw the pass which was intercepted by defensive end Kari Dunne. Now late in the second quarter from Pollard rushed for four times for 45 yards on a 78-yard drive that ended on the one-yard touchdown run. The gave the Steelers a 10-7 lead with one minute and 14 seconds left in the half. Denver tied the game in the third period when safety Roger Jackson blocked a punt giving them a first and goal on the Pittsburgh 4-yard line being to Kalismiss' 21-yard field goal but in the 84 playoff game. So the 9-84 playoff games that Bronco's got the first chance to score in the opening drive, which Rulon Jones sacked Stela's quarterback, Mark Malone, forced a fumble that was recovered by defensive end. Andre Tan's end on the Stela's 23-yard line. But Denver only gained one yard in the next three players, with Rich Kalismiss and the 39-yard field goal attempt. On the next player, Denver's Tom Jackson recovered a fumble snap from Malone on the Stela's 22 to set up quarterback John Helway's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jim Wright. Pittsburgh responded by moving the ball 62 yards to the Bronco's 11-yard line, where Gunny Anderson's 28-yard field goal made the score 7-3. Denver then drove to the third and goal from the Stela's 6-yard line, only to lose the ball when Helway threw the pass, which was intercepted by defensive end Gunny Dunn. Now late in the second quarter, Frank Pollard rushed for four times, 45 yards on a 78-yard drive that ended on the one-yard touchdown run. The gave a Stela's 10-7 lead, with one minute and 14 seconds left in the half. Denver tied the game in the third period when safety, Roger Jackson blocked a punt, giving them a first and goal on the Pittsburgh four-yard line, then to Kalism's 21-yard field goal. The next time Denver got the ball they drove 54 yards to take 17-10 lead from Helway's 20-yard touchdown pass to Steve Watson, who finished with 11 receptions for 117 yards, but Stela's tied the game with quarterback Mark Malone's 10-yard touchdown to Luis Lips. Three and a half minutes left in the game, Pittsburgh drove into a position for Anderson to attempt to go ahead field goal. Premise the kick from 26 yards, a few players later, Stela's safety Eric Williams intercepted a pass from Helway and returned the 28 yards to the Broncos two-yard line to set up Pollard's winning one-yard touchdown run. Malone finished the game with 227 passing yards and a touchdown, Elway threw for 184 yards with two touchdowns, but was sacked four times and intercepted twice. This was Elway's first playoff game as a starter, because of the Broncos elimination, he was denied the opportunity to play in the only Super Bowl to be held at his college home field over Stanford Stadium. Stela's outdone Denver, who was outdone in 10 of their 16 games in the regular season, and ranked bottom 10 on total offense and total defense. Running back Sami Winder he rushed for 1,153 yards during the season, was held to 37 yards and 15 calories. This was the third poor season made between Stela's and the Broncos and you know two-one to Stela's. So in the 1989 playoff game between these two, the Stela's jumped to an early three to zero lead with a 32-yard field goal by Gary Anderson. On the first player the second quarter odd ripped off a 45-yard run, the longest run of his career and he ended up rushing for 60 yards on the Stela's drive including a 7-yard touchdown country to increase the Stela's lead to 10 to zero. Denver responded with a 12-player 75-yard drive to score on Bratton's one-yard touchdown run, couldn't lead to 10-7 but the Stela's strong right back with Bubby Brister completing a 25-yard pass to tight end Mike Malarkey and rookie running back Tim Walley contributed a 19-yard cutting on the way to a 90-yard score and reception by Libby Slips. Shortly before the end of the first half, Bronco Kicker David Treadwell made a 43-yard field goal putting the score at 17-10 going into the half-time. In the third quarter, Bronco's defenders Cal Mecklenberg and Greg Fragon forced a fumble from Walley that Troy Braxton recovered on the Stela's 37-yard line, setting up quarterback John Elway's 37-yard touchdown to wide receiver Vance Johnson. It's tied the game at 17. Brister struck back completing a 19-yard screen to Hodge and on the 30-yard pass the rookie received Mark Stork on his way to a 35-yard Anderson field goal. In the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh defense back Thomas Everett intercepted Elway's pass and returned the 26-yard to midfield, setting up Anderson's 32-yard field goal to make the score 23-17. The Steelers appeared to have a big chance to put the game away following a Denver punt. But after a productive start to the drive, Braxton tackled Hodge on the yard short of the first down and the Denver 41 to bring up a fourth down and forced a punt. Now with seven minutes left in the game, Elway led to Bronco's 71 yards in nine players including the 36-yard completion to Jackson and a 15-yarder to Ricky Natelie, Natel, Ricky Natel. Breton finished the drive with his second one-yard touchdown of the game. This one with two minutes and 27 left on the clock. This time Steelers had no ability to respond. On the first down of their ensuring possession, Pristor fired a pass to a wide open stock but he tried to turn upfield before securing the catch. He felt a turf incomplete. Then after another incompletion, Pristor fumbled a low snap from the back centre, Chuck Lanza, who was a plan who was filled in for the injured All-Pro centre, Dementie Dawson. In a shotgun formation and Bronco's safety Randy Robbins recovered the ball to secure the win. Pristor completed 19 of his 29 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Elway threw for 239 yards and a touchdown with one interception and pushed for 44 yards. This was the fourth poor season meeting between these two and they were tied at two pace. Eight years later the Bronco's instilled this fifth stage of it in the 1997 AFC Championship game and this was a very much from the week 15 encounter. Even though the Broncos had the better record of 12 and 4 than the Steelers 11 and 15, Pittsburgh hosted this title game due to the virtue of them winning the AFC Central, whereas Denver qualified as a wildcard. Most of the scoring in this game in the first half, Pittsburgh got an early scoring opportunity when their leave on Kirkland intercepted a pass from Denver quarterback John Elway on the Broncos 43-yard line. Steelers then moved the ball onto the 20, only to have Norm Johnson miss a 38-yard field goal attempt. On the next player, Denver running back Terrell Davis took off on a 43-yard run to steal his 29-yard line, and the team went on the score on Davis's 8-yard touchdown run. Will Blackwell returned to the ensuring kickoff, 18 yards to 50, so 35-yard line, where Pittsburgh went on to move the ball up to 65-yard line to tie the game. Not the 65-yard line. They moved the ball 65 yards to go touchdown to tie the game, sorry I just read me notes from. On the final two players, Stewart converted a 20-yard pass to Janz Figpen, and then ran the ball to final 33 yards to the end zone. Still, the safety down in Petty ended Denver's next drive by fast and a recovery fumble from Davis on the Pittsburgh 32-yard line. Pittsburgh then drove 68 yards in 11 players to go up 14-7 onto Rome Betis's 1-yard touchdown run, a few minutes into the second quarter. The Broncos took back the ball and went on a 10-player 45-yard drive to score on their kicker John Elms 43-yard field goal. Both teams had to punt on the next drives, and Blackwell's 19-yard return gave the Steelers a first down on the Broncos 43-yard line. But two players later, Stewart forced a throw into a double coverage of safety rare crockets, intercepted his pass. In the end zone, after the turnover, El Will had the Broncos 80 yards to score on their 15-yard touchdown pass to full-back Howard Griffin. Griffin, Griffith. Given the Broncos a 17-14 lead, Steelers had to punt on the next drive, and Daddy and Gordon returned the ball 19 yards to the Broncos 43-set number 54-yard drive that ended on El Will's 1-yard touchdown pass to Ed McCaffrey. That gave Denver a 24-14 lead with 13 seconds left in the half. 34 of the 54-yards came from a pass interference penalty on the Steelers corner back, Carroll Lake on the first play of the drive. Both defenses controlled most of the second half, and the Steelers took the opening drive on the second half and moved the ball methodically down the field, and had a great score and chances at the Bronco a 5-yard line. Put linebacker Alan Aldridge ended the possession with an interception in the end zone. The next time the Steelers got the ball, they managed to move it to the Broncos 32, only to lose it again when their Nilsmith forced a fumble while Sacken Stewart and Denver's Michael Aldridge made the recovery. Lating to the fourth quarter, Stuart completed seven of eight passes for a 68-yard and rushed twice for 11 yards on the 79-yard drive. That ended with his 14-yard touchdown pass to Charles Johnson, cutting the score to 24-21, with only two minutes and 46 seconds left in regulation. At the too many warning, facing third down at five on their own 15-yard line. Elway connected on an 18-yard completion to Shannon Sharp for the first down, then on the next play completed 10 yards pass to McCaffrey for another first down, enabling his team to run out the rest of the clock. Sharp later said that Elway made up the converting play in the hoodle seconds before the snap. Retro's ball has really done it. Let's just stay, let's just stay, let's have never done before. In all, Dave is rushed for 139 yards and the touchdown. Bet he's rushed for 105 yards and the touchdown. This would turn out to be the final play of the game at a free reverse stadium. The next time the Steelers advanced to the playoffs would be 2001 in a brand new Heinz Ford, Heinz Field, which is now the a junior stadium. This was the first time since the playoff season was established in 1975, the team who finished with a better regular season record had to play a conference game on the road. Well that's besides what Elway needs took 40 in the year to get to a point where your team with the best record ends up in a wildcard and they say it has to play the road game. But this was the fifth postseason meeting between these two and you know Dave Broncos now have the edge. The Broncos went into Super Bowl 32, which was the one which was the first of two consecutive titles. Those titles capped off Elway's Hall of Fame career, retiring just after the 1998 season and ironically the backup quarterback for the Broncos two Super Bowl team winning teams under Elway was Bobby Brister, who the first Elway in the 1989 divisional round game for the Steelers. Another eight year away took place before the two teams faced each other again in the playoffs. It was a 2005 AFC Championship game when six seed Steelers 11 and 5 were underdogs against the 13 of Broncos who defeated the rival and two-time defending champions New England Patriots in the divisional round. And for the first time since 1984 the Steelers played on the road in the AFC Championship game. Pittsburgh scored on the opening drive moving the ball 62 yards in 12 players and ended with a Jeff Reid field goal. Three players after the kickoff Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer lost a fumble while he was being sacked by Joey Porter and the Steelers nose tackle Casey Hempton recovered it on the Denver 39 yard line. Four players later Rosson Burgers 12-yard touchdown pass to Wilson increased the Steelers lead to 10-0. On the first play of the second quarter the Broncos responded by driving 55 yards and scoring with a field goal from Jason Ellum. But Pittsburgh stones right back. Marching 80 yards in 14 players and scoring with Betis's three-yard touchdown run to take the lead to 17-3. Then for the first player after the inturing kickoff I could tell it intercepted a pass from Plummer on the Broncos 39 yard line. Four players later Betis touchdown run was called back because of a penalty on board but Ward made up for his mistake by catching the touchdown pass on the next player given the Steelers a 24-3 lead with seven seconds left in the first half. And in the fourth quarter of 38-yard reception by Lee. But Pittsburgh, you pronounce that Lilly Lilly? Say it's Lilly. On a 22-yard pass interference penalty on Taylor set up a three-yard touchdown run by Mike Anderson. Couldn't Denver's deficit down from 27-17. But after the Steelers punt defensive end Brett Kiesel forced a fumble on the fourth down from Plummer and his teammate Travis Chris Key, recovered it at the end of Broncos 17 yard line. Four players later, Russell and Burger ended any chance of a Denver comeback with a four-yard touchdown run. This would prove to be the Broncos last playoff game with Mike Shanahan as a head coach and last until 2011. It would also be Shanahan's last playoff game until 2012 with Washington. This is the sixth post-season meeting between these two. So this was second year quarterback Ben Russell's burgers. It was already in his fifth career playoff game and he completed 21 of 29 passes for 275 yards, two touchdowns and he ran in for the third. Steelers run him back to run base, rushed for another touchdown. The Broncos and Steelers renewed their rivalry in the 2011 wild card round in which became known as the 3-16 game. The Broncos, despite winning the AFC West and hosting the game, finished with an eight-and-eight record on the dogs against the 12 and four Steelers. However, this game was the first one ever played under the leagues and new overtime rules in which winning would be more difficult for the team than one that they're calling toss because the game would not end on an open field goal. The Steelers scored on the opening drive with Ben Russell's burgers 33-yard completion to tight end. Later in the quarter, Steelers run him back Isaac Redman, rushed five times for 33-yards on a 47-yard drive. They've ended in Tuesday's 38-yard field goal, increasing the score to 6-0. But Denver, which again just eight yards in the first quarter, suddenly exploded with offensive production in the second. On the first drive of the quarter, Teapal completed a 51-yard strike to Thomas. Then he followed it up with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal. Following the Pittsburgh punt, Teapal's 58-yard completion to Thomas set up his own touchdown on an 8-yard run, given the Broncos a 14-6 lead, and an interception by Quentin Carter quickly led to a 20-yard field goal from Mark Potter. They ran. And before the end of the year, over half, Potter added one more. The second set up by Teapal's 41-yard completion to tight end down fells, Daniel fell, so you know, Daniel fells. With time running out in the quarter, Russell's burgers completed a 25-yard pass to Antonio Brown and 18-yarder to Emmanuel Sanders. On the drive that advanced to the Broncos' 32-yard line, Brown the third down and Fumbel snapped, resulted in a 23-yard loss, pushing the team out of field goal range. Pittsburgh regrouped in the second half after its defence forced a punt. Russell's burger completed an 18-yard pass to Saunders, and Redmond broke off a 32-yard run on the way to a 1-yard touchdown run by receiver Mike Wallace. On an end-around player cutting the score to 20-13, Denver struck back with their third field goal from Potter, added by a 32-yard pass interference penalty by Ike Taylor. But Pittsburgh responded with their own field goal drive, featuring a 28-room by Redmond, making it a one-score game at 23-16. With seven minutes and 35 left in regulation, Denver running back, Wills McGee, lost a fumble while being tackled by Randy Mundy, Ryan Mundy, and lying back at Lamar Woodley. We covered it at the end of the year, Steelers 45-yard line. Then Russell's burger was sacked on the first player, who recovered with a 15-yard completion to Saunders and a 60-yard run before tying the game. With a 31-yard touchdown completion to Jettico Ococce here. Both teams had one more drive to attempt a winning score, but Denver could go no further than their own 35-yard line, while Russell's burger was sacked twice on his drive, as time expired in the fourth quarter. Following a touch-back on the opening kick-off, Pittsburgh and the air anticipated that Denver would take to the ground, so the Steelers defense pulled all 11 players within 60 yards of a line of scrimmage. But Tippo hit Thomas in stride on a slant pattern across the middle of the field, and he took the ball 80 yards to the end zone for a game winning score. So how is this game known as the 3-16 game? Tippo is strong religious beliefs, but he also threw for three hundred and sixteen passing yards in that game. When he led the Florida Gators in winning the 2009 BCS National Championship game, he had 3-16 written beneath his eyes, which he played exactly three years before this playoff game. Additionally, he had set a playoff record of an average of 31.6 yards. Owning a rental property sounds like a dream, collect a rent, and relax. That's per completion. The only interception in the game was thrown by a process burger on a third down and 16. So, three and 16. The Nelson's written for the game also peaked at 31.6. Pittsburgh's time of possession was 31 minutes and six seconds. In addition, Thomas who caught the win and touchdown pass in overtime was born on Christmas Day in 1987. I don't know what that's going to do with 3-16. But, you know, that's what this stat says. So this was the seventh postseason win between these two. It was free each. After the last one, you know, Denver Broncos are getting the edge now of 4-3 in the playoffs. So even though Tivo had a Biblical performance in the 3-16 game, he was traded after the season when the Broncos signed Peyton Manning. Manning made his Broncos debut against the Steelers during week one of the 2012 season when he led the Broncos 31-19 victory. In that game, Manning finished with 253 yards and two touchdowns on a 19-26 pass in attempts. But in the 2015 season will be Manning's last in the NFL and the two teams first each over twice. The first was in week 15 of the regular season, which Pittsburgh won 34-27 as Manning set out the game due to bout with Plantar Forcitis. However, in the divisional round, at the end of the game's opening possession, Broncos safety Omar Bolton returned at 0.42 yards to the Pittsburgh 30-yard line. Set no random mechanics, his 28-yard field goal. Later in the quarter, Britain clockets, 57-yard punt pinned the Steelers back on their own 3-yard line. Pittsburgh were unable to get out of the situation with their ensuing drive, and Jordan Betty's 27-yard punt gave Denver a first down on the Steelers 31. Despite the excellent start position, Denver could not get into the end zone and ended up with another McManusville goal giving it a 6-0 lead. Pittsburgh took the ball back and stomped 80 yards in just five players. First, Ben Rofflisberg had completed a 23-yard pass to receive a metavis Bryant Bryant. Then Bryant took the hand off on the reverse and raced 40 yards to the Broncos 16-yard line. Fitzgerald Tossant finished the drive with two pennies. The first day for 15 yards and the second for one-yard score that gave Pittsburgh a 7-3 lead with less than two minutes left to the first quarter. In Pittsburgh next possession, Rofflisberg has 58-yard completion to the daddy as here would be set up a 43-yard crisp as well field goal to increase the lead to 10-6. Denver had a chance to response when the drive, when a drive to the Steelers 37-yard line, but they turned the ball over with an incomplete pass on the fourth and three. Late in the second quarter, Benny built a 50-yard punt that gave the Broncos the ball at the row five-yard line. Put a 34-yard burst by Runembach CJ Anderson sparked a 62-yard drive that ended with McManus's 51-yard field goal. Couldn't have scored a 10-9 on the last play of the first half. After fastened Denver to punt in the first drive of the second half, Pittsburgh put together a 69-yard score and drive featured in a 58-yard reception to Brian Boswell finished it with a 28-yard field goal and increased the Steelers lead to 13-9. Denver had to punt again on the next drive, but clockied once again gave his team the best asset. This time with a 51-yard punt that put the ball on the Steelers 60-yard line, Pittsburgh could not get a first down again and Benny's 43-yard punt gave the ball back to Denver on the 47-yard line. The Broncos were only able to move the ball 30 yards with the insurance drive, but it was enough for guess what, another field goal, which trimmed the deficit down to 13-12. Pittsburgh took the ball back and drove the Broncos 34-yard line, but they were halted there and decided to punt instead of trying for the long field goal. Broncos also ended up punting and Pittsburgh drove back to the Denver 34-yard line with three consecutive Rothless Burger completion for 39 yards in total. But in the next player, the first turnover of the game occurred when safety Bradley Robby forced a fumble from Tossyant. Tossyant? That was recovered by line backer De Marcus Ware. But now with 9 minutes and 52 left in the game. 39-year-old Bronco Quat back pit and Manning took to the field and led his team 65 yards in 13 players for the go-ahead score. The key player of this drive was a 31-yard completion from Manning to rookie year, receiving Benny Fowler. On a third and 12 from the Broncos 33-yard line running back Ronnie Hillman also made a big impact with five cannons for 18 yards after Fowler's catch. The Broncos would not face another third down on that drive until the last player of the drive Anderson converted a third and goal with a one-yard touchdown run then Manning's completed a pass to Damirius Thomas for a two-point conversion that gave the Broncos a 20-13 lead with three minutes left on the clock. Pittsburgh's buyer started off the next drive with an 18-yard catch by brain, but ended up facing a 4-5 on their own for a three-yard line with less than two minutes left. They tried to pick up the first down and put Ware Sakrofflesberger for a 13-yard loss. Taken over at the Steelers 30-yard line, Damirius Phos Pittsburgh to use up all the time-outs and their three consecutive running players. Then McManus kicked a 45-yard field goal that gave the Broncos a 23-13 lead with 53 seconds to go. A 20-yard pass interference penalty on safety TJ Ward and a 22-yard reception by Bryant ended Boswell to bring the deficit back to one score with a 57-yard field goal, but Anderson eliminated any chance of a comeback by recovering Boswell's insurance on sidekick. So Manning completed a 32-37 passes for 222 yards. Manuel Sanders scored five of the 85 yards. Anderson was the top rusher in the game with 72 yards and a touchdown, while also catching two passes for 11 yards. Ware had three tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. McManus tied a playoff record for five field goals. Roswell'sberger finished the game with 24-37 for 339 yards. Bryant caught nine passes for 154 yards and the two and they had two Cadiz for 40 yards. Linebacker James Harison had seven tackles and a sack. This was the eighth and final passes and meeting between these two and that gives the Broncos a five and three record in the playoffs. So let's give you some stats. Outside the playoffs, the first meeting was September 27th from 1970 when the Broncos beat the Steelers 16-13. The last meeting was October the 10th 2021 where the Steelers beat the Broncos 27-19 and the next meeting is going to be in September the 15th this year. Altogether, there's been 34 meetings between these teams. All-time series is 20 to the Broncos 13 to the Raiders and one tie. In the regular season, there's 15 to the Broncos 10 to the Steelers and one tie. Poor season results. Broncos are up five and three. Most recent was the one that had just been going on about which was a 2015 season where the Broncos beat 23 to the Steelers 16. Only two touchdowns in that game. One apiece. The largest victory came in 1979 where the Steelers beat the Broncos 42 to 7. The longest win streak is the Broncos of 3 between 1970 and 1973. Also, the Steelers have a win streak of 3 between 1978 and 1979. Currently, the Steelers are on a two-game win streak from 2020 to present. Again, like the Cowboys and 49ers, both of these teams have had big success in the Super Bowl and in the playoffs. The AFC Championships, the Broncos have won 8 in 1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1987, 1998, 2013 and 2015. The Steelers have also won 8 AFC Championships in 1974, 75, 78, 79, 95, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Broncos have won 3 Super Bowls, 1987, 98 and 2015. The Steelers have won 6 Super Bowls in 1974, 75, 78, 79, 2005 and 2008. So even though the Broncos have got the better for game-wise, they've won the more games, they've won the more playoff games. The Steelers have won twice as many Super Bowls as the Broncos. That's all I have with the Broncos versus the Steelers rivalry. I will be back shortly with another conference playoff rivalry. I've got another two more to do, another two more to get out and then I've covered four. I like to keep it round numbers. So two from the AFC, two from the NFC, it's all going to bounce out. Then we're going to begin close to the start of the season. So I am going to end the rivalry series with the conference rounds because then after that, I've got two special episodes that I would like to get out before the season starts and they're going to be a good episode, good boarders' episodes. I do like a boarders' episode. So with that being said, I'd like to give a shout out to the guys, Mike and Telly and C.M. everyone at the football function. You know, I'd alter the listeners, everything. You know, just like C.M. says all the time like a dream. Just, you know, go over to Patreon, become a Patreon, become a certified football game. I did it about what every two years ago, three years ago, I became a certified football game. It's great. You know, I've tried listening to podcasts on Apple Music and Spotify and it's just so much easier on Patreon, especially without the ads because this thing's going on for about an hour now, you know. So, yeah. Get yourselves on to Patreon, become a certified football game. Also, get yourself over to Twitch, find me on there. And when the season starts, I will be doing a football function, take over stream every Wednesday. And if you want to support the podcast in a different way, you know, you come into my stream when it's on and you type. I don't know what that symbol is. It's the one that's aligned in a dot underneath, you know, an upside down eye. It's an explanation mark. I'm not sure what it is. My English isn't that great to be fair, but like grammar and that's it. Yeah, you just type in that, donor, and it will give you a link which will take you to a donation page. Anything you donate on the days of the football function takeover will be sent through to mike and telly that they can, you know, help use to build the podcast and, you know, give you us all a better, better listening experience. So, with that being said, I'm going to do one and I will be back with you shortly. We have a new conference. I'm putting off rivalry. And yeah, hope is all of a good week. Hope is all of it. I've had a good week last week and you have a good week next week. Yeah, just remember, peace is really, step light. Breaking news coming in from Bet365 where every nail biting over time win.
