Lots of numbers in this first story, but an impactful report from Rocky County Economic Development Small Business and Tourism. Domestic and international visitors to and within our county spent 93.86 million dollars in 2023. That's an increase of 6% from the previous year about the same increase statewide. The travel and tourism industry in Rockingham County directly employs approximately 700 people. Total payroll generated 23.7 million dollars. State tax revenue 3.8 million. More than 3 million in local taxes. Across our state, visitors spending in 2023 reached a record 35.6 billion dollars. Direct Tourism Employment 227,700. North Carolina hosted about 43 million visitors last year. Our next podcast with Tara Martin, Marketing Manager for Rockingham County Economic Development Small Business and Tourism is coming up next week, Wednesday, September 11th. There was a vehicle fire in the 7200 block of U.S. 158 Readsville. Late Thursday, Readsville Fire Department responded, "First, Monroton Volunteer Fire Department handle the call. No injuries. The Rockingham County Fire Marshal's office is investigating. I've posted a picture of that fire on Facebook, Mike Moore Media, a bucket truck belonging to Junior Love Tree Service in Eden." In local business news, only a few more days to stop by sheets on NC14 in Eden, the store, which opened 16 years ago, is closing Sunday. The building will be torn down and expanded to accommodate inside seating a new drive-through and other updated features. It's expected to be closed about five months, reopening in February. This private family-owned company, based in Pennsylvania, has more than 750 locations in six states, with over 21,000 employees. Fall sports kick off this weekend at the Madison-Mayidane Recreation Department with Dirty Birds Football. Close to 100 on the team, they play Eastern Randolph tomorrow from 10 until 3 30. Soccer tomorrow at Ferris Memorial Park starting at 9, about 170 kids in that program. All T-balls, softball and baseball teams play next week. The volleyball program continues to grow, practices started first games in a couple of weeks. Adult kickball has seven teams, with room for one more, games start Monday. Registration is open for basketball cheerleading ages 4-13 through September 30. The Madison-Mayidane Senior Center has a number of trips on their schedule overnight at Myrtle Beach in early October. Day trips, barn dinner theater, Blue Ridge Parkway, Southern Supreme Fruitcake Factory and Old Salem. The annual Holiday Mall is Saturday November 9 from 10-3. More than 60 vendors signed up so far.
