It's Wednesday September 4th and this is Rocco Live. Hello, I'm Mike Moore. We've taken a summer break but we're back and ready to take your phone calls. I have some special guests today. We'll be talking to the owner of 770 Thrift in Eden and brand new business in May at end that has their ribbon cutting and opening. They've had a soft opening already and that is Chachas Place right downtown May at end. Our program is sponsored by Sandy Cross General merchandise on Boyd Road in Readsville right there at the intersection of Boyd and Sandy Cross Road and Irving Farm Road. I'll be talking to Amy Tilly at the old law cabin store about 1130. But right now we're taking your phone calls. They take you a little bit of time to find us again but we're on Wednesday mornings live at 11 o'clock, 11 to 12 on Wednesdays and you can go to our Facebook page. Mike Moore Media probably the best way to find us there. There are other social media platforms but that's pretty easy. Facebook, Mike Moore Media, you find the program streaming live right now and the phone number 336 932 1 881 932 1881 if you'd like to be on the show. I'll also be talking about some upcoming events around the area and I've got some bluegrass music to play here today and I give you a little background on what I'm playing and how that has happened here. I didn't even own this CD until less than a week ago which brings me to 770 thrift on NC 770 going out of Eden kind of right across there almost from Boone and Cook Funeral Home. John Delahanty is the owner and he's in our studios. Hey John. Good to see you. Well it's good to have you here. How you doing? I'm doing great. Thank you for having me. I was I took a quick run out between podcasts this morning out to your place. Nobody was there. You weren't open yet. Go. What are your hours? We are right now Wednesday to Saturday 10 to 6 each day. Okay. 10 to 6 Wednesday through Saturday 770 thrift but someone told me this morning to take it down the letter is it when Dixie? Yeah they are. The center has been sold and the new owner is doing a lot of work. He's put a new roof on the entire building and now he's working on the front of the building changing the entire facade I guess and just making it look better I think to parking lot is next and and then hopefully see some things moving in here pretty shortly. Oh that's exciting. You're the first one in. I am. I'm a pioneer. You are. Okay so I ran out took some pictures of the old Windixie building. I did that I don't know last year sometime and posted those got a lot of comments and but yeah they were working on the letter so I'm gonna I don't want them all post those pictures but Tom will say one last look right yeah yeah that's exactly right and I kind of stepped inside there and took some and did some of the other businesses that used to be there too but been empty for a while but now 770 thrift is there from Ridgeway to Eden. That's right. But before we get to your business I want to find a little bit about you because you were just kind of getting a little better Queen it as you came into the studio so you're kind of out coming here from Midwest Kansas and I grew up born in the Midwest Kansas Nebraska area my parents moved us to the Southwest Albuquerque, New Mexico and they're abouts until I was probably 12 or 13 years old and then moved to Richmond, Virginia and you know basically say I grew up there but that was my teenage years and early adults and yeah and then moved out here for for work and stayed. My kids this is all they know and they're adults now and and so this is home now. Yeah so you have how many children? I've got three boys. Okay three boys. Oldest is 36 so it dates me a little bit. Well you look like you are only about 40. Yeah I started really young. I guess you did. I wish I was only 40. So what are they? 36 and what are they? 36 and my youngest is 26. Okay and you know you have moved into the old Dollar General building there which was in terrible shape like that other all the other parts that shopping center but you've come in and really done some very positive things there at $7.73. Yeah it's evident you walk in there your ladies up front and everybody there so nice and friendly and greet you. I like it when you know you walk in a business and they welcome you. Yeah well I want to make sure everybody knows that we're there and ready to help. Yeah you know that you know I want to be definitely an asset to the to the community and you know I I like that when I go places so I want to be the same same way. Yeah you have been in another place for a long time so tell us about that. We were we were formally the bargain basement in Ridgeway Virginia under Woody's supermarket and we just outgrew it. It's probably less than half the size of the current location. Wow and the parking lot was lacking so it's just you know a fresh a new fresh thing for us you know bigger brighter and hopefully better. Yeah but you know it's really I'm really proud of of how far we've come but we still have you know we still have things to do and you know it's a constant battle every day to make it better and better. Sure well any businesses you're always fine-tuning and but I'm impressed you're always bringing in stuff I mean you got a lot that you bring in every week. Yeah just about it is pretty much every week there's something that we didn't have I never know what it is until we get it but we most of our merchandise we get from storage locker auctions you know kind of like storage wars and and so you know you can see big things it's just like you see on TV when you go to these things you you can look at it but you can't go inside you can't open any boxes and so you're just you know you're gambling a little bit you can see some of the bigger things but so it's it's kind of a treasure hunt every week and and so it's a lot of fun too it's a lot of work yeah because you're moving you know a whole house full of stuff three or four times a week and and have a known pack and and so forth but but it's a lot of fun too you know sure treasure hunts are fun absolutely yeah kind of take us around the the store what and I just kind of give us a little tour walk around well we've got you walk in and mainly furniture is well appliances are probably the first thing you see washers dryers refrigerators stoves pretty much and I told you last week when I was in those TVs you got a big selection even got lots of brand new they look like you just came off the shelf we get lots of television right now they're 40% off of the price that's listed so we've got you know we we've accumulated so many we need to start moving some so I've really slashed those to the bone but the TV is down the wall there we've got lots of furniture sofa love seats tables kitchen tables bedroom sets back in the corner we've got you know rows and rows of clothing all sizes and styles and then we've got shelves of you know what not so you're you know kitchen utensils and dishes and and just sit around things tools you've got some beautiful glass where oh yeah we get so much and so much neat stuff that you just don't yes you can't just go to Walmart and buy it it's you know unique things that you know sometimes I'll only see one time you know so you know and and vintage things I mean you know again things that people decorated their home with or was you know passed down or so forth and for whatever reason let go of and also right now we've just started putting out we accumulate quite a bit of Christmas decoration and other holidays too but we just started putting out all our Christmas stuff and it is I can't believe much Christmas stuff we have right now I think we've we filled up a whole row of shelves with Christmas a little bit of Halloween but so much Christmas and I don't know if we've even a third of it out yet so yeah I'm sorry a little music just came in there problem which we're gonna hear in a moment and it's a background there yeah so we're thinking Christmas already at 773 well in the past it's it always seems like we're behind the time on Christmas as far as when other people put theirs out yeah you know the big stores so we figured we were gonna get ahead of it this year and and if they're gonna you know if Walmart's gonna put it out in September so yeah we're there all right we got it 773 is on NC 770 Eden where the the old wind Dixie shopping center right everybody loved pizza station when it was there and we used to get our haircut there in the corner there you'll let little shop and so yeah lots of good shops there and you told me I think didn't you tell me last week when that when that was built that shopping center 1979 79 right I should remember that because we're just not that far away from it here but that was a big deal and yeah I went out this morning and took some pictures as they were taking those letters down the old wind Dixie letters and I'll tell you that's like I said an end of an era there right and when Dixie was just a welcome addition to this end of Eden for many many years good neighborhood and it's really kind of missing now that kind of thing yeah you know you have to go all the way into town across town to go to any any kind of a good sized grocery store you know yeah so yeah it's it's too bad that there isn't something on this side of town that's similar I know yeah but John telling us that the shopping center has been sold new owners and they're fixing up making some changes and so we're excited about that that's just big news and you mentioned especially the parking lot that parking lot's in shape right yeah it's it could use some work and I think that's on the horizon yeah oh that's great yeah and I don't know if you know I didn't I was kind of in a hurry smart about 10 or 12 pictures but and I didn't have time to take back in the woods there as you go in the off 770 on the left way back in the woods almost hidden that was a bank right you know you know yeah I don't know it one time years ago you could walk these the windows were broken out and all that I don't know has as a new owner looked at that piece of the problem they they were on the roof I think he put a roof on that also and cleared all that out and you can actually get to it he's he's planning on doing something with it he hasn't he hasn't told me what but I know they're he's not tearing it down he's he's fixing it so something's going there I'm not sure what okay well that's exciting to see you stand by and see what's going to happen and I don't know how much time you have to spend with us here but I do want to play CD and I'm gonna grab it here when I was at your place last week and I've been shopping a couple of times there at 770 thrift and you've got a big selection of movies and music yeah we we get lots of DVDs and CDs from every genre era I mean well I mean you've seen that everywhere from you know big band and jazz to you know current and then movies from you know again when when you whatever people collected we get quite a quite a bit of it so yeah you know whatever some you know whatever you're into and would store away if I get a box of your DVDs it'd be what you liked so so usually there's I mean it runs the game it really does it really does well I picked up the Mayfield brothers herb smokey and Ed there they are they vintage recordings 1948 to 1956 little I was working on this when he came in John the Mayfield brothers were born and raised in Texas in the mid 1920s and Ed went on to play for Bill Monroe oh actually yeah yeah six of these songs were recorded in a studio in Clovis New Mexico Wow and you said you lived in Albuquerque we did we did and yeah it's quite a different place from you know I you know bluegrass you think Kentucky and in that area yeah New Mexico is quite a different place but very it's beautiful out there it's just it's just a different beauty it's you know instead of greens and so forth it's more of a Browns and you know deserty but it's still free oh great yeah yeah let's see this this was recorded a lot of the songs well six I'm 55 to 56 and then someone in the family actually recorded the rest of the songs I don't know how many there are on here 21 the rest of the songs were recorded on an old real to real machine in their living room so and they're all short I've got one here that's 56 seconds Wow but they're around two minutes long so we're gonna slip in one it's about two minutes from the Mayfield brothers and then we're gonna be back and talk with John from 770 thrift we are taking your phone calls if you like to be on the program you can talk about anything you want to talk about at 336-932-1881 to be on the program and I'll be talking to Amy Tilly from Sandy Cross general merchandise in Reedsville about halfway into the program let's listen to one of these cuts here from this old CD this is a real collector a collector's item here and I just paid a buck for this at your place yeah so I've added it to my collection [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] listening to the Mayfield brothers and a little something from their CD that I picked up last week at 770 thrift and John is here John Delahanny and he owns the business air and I'm glad I found this one this is a find for sure absolutely yeah okay so we'll listen some more of this a little bit 932-1881 if you like to be on the program I don't know if you want to talk about this or not but you you'd mention you had a little radio experience way way back so I don't know anything about it well buddy of mine we had a little sports call-in show in Martinsville and we were a little over 20 years ago and he and I did we were JD and big money and at the time I was so a caller called in and asked how we how we got the names JD and big money I guess big money was you no it was it was my buddy and I was at the time I was about 350 pounds and and he is balding and I said well you know how sometimes you call fat people tiny and and bald people curly I said we should probably should have called it tiny and curly but but yeah we you know we're both very into sports and you know so it was you know you didn't have to pay us to talk about it yeah but we like to do it it just after probably two or three years it just got to be you know we had to make a choice you know you know with our jobs you know that definitely didn't pay what it needed to pay not getting rich in radio well so the all sports are you interested in all sports are you pretty much you know of course we're really in the football right now NFL season kicks off tomorrow night that's right tomorrow night yeah so we've been my son-in-law from Baltimore so you know where he is yeah my buddy is a big Ravens fan yeah so I've been a I'm not a fair weather fan I've been a Cowboys fan since the early 70s so I've been through the ups and downs fans whether it's football or baseball or whatever I'm not a big sports person I never had a real anyone to kind of help me with that when I was growing up so I appreciate sports and people who play sports and the game and all that you know did a few little things had had to when I was in college you know for PE classes and things like that but but the the people who love sports like you just mentioned the Cowboys they're loyal fans to their team are they absolutely and you know and I've got the older I get to the less fanatic I get about you know yeah I mean of course I like my teams but yeah but the sports themselves I just you know I love to watch and listen and and you know and you know anything football baseball you know I can if it's a competition I love to watch it you know the Olympics just ended love love the Olympics yeah obscure sports that you'd never watch any other time but you get so wrapped up into it you know yeah but yeah it's great I love it I have a so who are you pulling for tomorrow night you have one favorite over there well you know I'm from the the Kansas area in Kansas City area there you go okay so my family is probably hardcore chiefs my buddy like say he's a he's a big Ravens fan he and his son so yeah I'm not sure which way I'll go I'm sure when I you know I'll be going to his house to watch the game and I'm sure he'll be in his Ravens jersey and I probably need a little bit yeah well you better wear your jersey here that's right okay well good luck yeah yeah you know any of you got some sports memorabilia and stuff like that at 770 thrift we do we've got we get a lot of different things one thing I have that's really neat is we found a an autographed picture of Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes during their fight I want to say in 1980 wow and yeah they both signed of course you can't get it signed again they're they both passed but but yeah that's again those are the kind of neat things that we find that you know people collect and for whatever reason yeah I don't keep or or can't keep or or whatever the case may be yeah yeah and we find a few you know collecting collectible things like that you know vintage penance and and different signs and so forth but yeah and you never know the team whatever team that person was into you know you get a lot of that sure yeah and as you add these items pretty much on a weekly basis that's why it's important to combine shop often right right and you know I tell people all the time I get people who say oh if it's still here when and that's the first rule thrift stores if you see it you better buy it because if you like it someone else does too that that's exactly right so yeah you don't don't wait around that I can't order more no when you said a little bit ago one of a kind you know that's right things that there are some things that are truly one of a kind here today and gone tomorrow sometimes yeah okay well let's see I'm gonna call Amy here at Sandy Cross General merchandise in a little bit I don't want to keep you from from your work but but who all of you got out there today what are the ladies there that are some of us uh Tammy and Diana are there and then the guy is Chuck and Sean and his son Dion also Chuck son Shawn and Dion work with some I've just been so blessed to have people you know I haven't really had to search for people to to help out over the last you know I've been doing I've been I've had a store in one location or another for 13 years and I've never really had to search people to they've found me you know we found each other and and well today the way things are today was staffing and oh you know it's hard to find people to work no one wants to work right and it's just yeah it's been great I mean they're you know as much family as as family can be you know at this point you know they've all been with me for probably eight plus years at this point you know and you know came at times when you know difficult times for us you know when you know when I started it was my son my mother and I started the business and and my son passed it's been about eight years now in a car accident my mother passed a few years ago and it was you know that was this was our thing you know so and it's just you know people get put into your into your path you know at the right time you know and and and for me that's been the case I've just been blessed to have them you know in my life at the right time and and it's it's just really going great yeah that's wonderful well I can I can understand what you're saying yeah yeah special people in your life for sure okay well I'm going to play another song here from this CD and while that's playing I'm trying to look for the longest one I was telling they're also short they're all you know but this one's only this one's only two minutes so I gotta make my phone call quick do you need to go can you stay a little bit yeah I probably need to get back and get some get some actual work well okay well we'll say goodbye to you if you need to and then sure it's been good to have you're going to do it again yeah yeah well you might become a regular person on our program yeah but I'll be a character yeah a character okay that's funny but thank you for coming in and give us the location where where your business is and the hours and all of that we are at 77 20 NC 770 here in Eden which is the the old shopping center where Windex used to be near the drive-in theater across from Boone and Cook and we're there right now we're a new business that is officially opening tomorrow I guess with their ribbon cutting I'm looking at their menu right here it's Chachos Place it's at 100 West Main Street downtown Mayadan and I'm going to call them while this song is playing and we're going to see when you get an update from Chachos herself and find out about her new business so yeah another song here right now from the Mayfield brothers [Music] here at my heart is lonely for the folk back home when I left my mother and daddy all alone and in a lot of changing birds and I've been around I like to wander back to the old home town you're not at the home park and you've gone away and you need a brand to help you every day and in your partner that you won't be around I'd like to wander back to the old home town [Music] I've set the pole world over since I've been around I've never found the place like the old home town if I could live life over I'd never roam around I'd like to wander back to the old home town you're not at the home park and you've gone away and you need a brand to help you every day and in your partner that you won't be around I'd like to wander back to the old home town well we've got time for a few more songs from this CD and we'll get to those in a moment because I was unable to reach the folks at Chachos place lunchtime I guess are awfully busy so they didn't answer their phone but they are having their ribbon cutting tomorrow with a western Rockingham Chamber of Commerce and that is at 10 in the morning that was originally an afternoon and I'd hope to get to that tomorrow but now they've changed the time 10 o'clock in the morning for the ribbon cutting but I do have one of their menus in front of me I picked it up when I was in recently let's see breakfast burritos and omelets and breakfast plate and pancake bites waffle and all kinds of toppings and then most items gluten-free and then let's see for lunch we've got burritos and rice bowl salad quesadilla cruncher let's see what this is double layer crunchy quesadilla with cheese and your choice of protein and fresh ingredients not chose tacos loaded cheese fries and here's on part of the menu the proteins you can choose and look at all of these fresh ingredients first three are free and then 50 cents each as you add on my gosh there's a lot listed here a lot of sides to business delivery available in the area and they cater cha-cha's place is at 100 west main street in downtown may it end they're right next to lemon tree boutique which had their ribbon cutting um few weeks back about three weeks ago with the chamber and uh wow what a beautiful little shop that is I was spending some time there recently and they have ice cream and cake and some good things they're good sweets so uh get your taco there in the corner walk right next door and have dessert about that and that's in downtown may it end so we're wishing all of these folks there these businesses much success always exciting when new
