Week 1 recap and is Caleb Williams okay?
All right, let's get after it. This is immediate reactions not immediate, but you know pretty close to immediate reactions after The bears dub yesterday. We won't say that it was the most clean dub on earth But hey, I'm so here for it painted nails. Let's go. Oh, when is a win a win is a win and? Obviously Caleb didn't look that great, but that's okay. We'll get in a deeper dive into that Honestly, I just want to start off with that might as well Caleb looked lackluster But I feel like anyone with half a brain kind of had to expect that with especially bears fans I think if you're not a bears fan You are like expecting I want to do this guy's gonna do that great just because of the fact of Bears fans were so hyped and so turned up from Especially hard knocks like hard knocks as it gets you so hyped up watching it you buy into the hype. I Don't know That's how I felt about it and it's pretty just upsetting there obviously there are a lot of things that didn't go his way like in The game yesterday Obviously Keenan Allen drop tuddies. He's overthrowing teen and Allen We'll get to the other ferret man later shortly, but Yeah, personally, I'm not worried though. I'll just say that I'm not I see people all over Social media like hitting the panic button already. I'm not no like what are you doing? How could you possibly? Like be freaking out already Well, a lot of people don't really take into consideration to outside of the fact that That was his first career NFL game ever that He's never played with DeAndre Swift Roma Dunes a DJ more Keenan Allen like They've never played an actual professional style game nor has he sat behind that horrendous offensive line that align was abysmal and That I Didn't expect him to play as bad as he did. He played like fucking shit Now it's not all his fault obviously because our own line is terrible and he looked like Justin Fields used to he fucking gets the ball Running for turns turns around and there's a fucking 300 pound lineman in his face in about 1.2 Seconds, yeah, like yeah, you're not gonna be able to do much with that I also thought it was pretty funny how he thought he was gonna escape that guy trying that cutesy bullshit like exactly what I was talking about before the season like He turns around he like tries to make like a spin move then he like keeps running back turns around tries to make another spin And it's like dude, you got a 300 pound guy and you're not getting away from him like welcome to the NFL You I knew this was coming and that's why I also hated the fucking comments when he said I don't get nervous. So my bitch. He looked nervous about two drives into that game. He looked real fucking nervous He looked shook as hell. He looked on edge and he should be there's nothing wrong with that But that's why that comment fucking kind of set me off when he said it because I knew this was inevitably gonna happen Whether it was week one or you know week two three Like at some point he was gonna get a really rude awakening to what it's like to play 300 pound guys I can move like that hundred percent like they are freak athletes and obviously just a lot of bad throws a lot of bad decision-making just Like you can't take a 19 yard sack. No, he definitely just Joe is that's just like he's so crazy all the way Yeah, and obviously like that's obviously yeah Hopefully I've said this before because obviously when fields came in I was like well, you know, he'll learn that fields never seemed to kind of learn that and so literally probably the second half of last season Let's hope Caleb could flip that script and actually learn from his mistakes pretty immediately because Especially after the game yesterday is press conference He was like I need I need to play better. I will play better He's like I know I know I need to be better. I'm like dude I was hearing this for like the last three years. So I needed it. I need you to actually do it Yeah, don't just want to see it. Yeah, I just want to see it. Okay. Yeah, it's fine first game I actually have very solid defense the Titans have I didn't realize they have dudes I had I was saying it Really really good But Nevertheless, it's okay next week is gonna be scary though Yeah, I don't know about scary, but I mean The only problem is like Houston has a pretty pretty solid defensive line and anybody playing against our Offensive line basically just a couple of paper bags sitting out there. Yeah, I was there gonna I mean put that our center was laying on his ass the entire game I mean he was just hand caked they might as well just roll the fucking sod over that guy It was terrible. I think he's still laying there right now actually dude. Okay, so it's so bad When I was listening to ESPN 1000 yesterday After the game They're clowning in - Coleman Shelton they were like Yeah, the entire like Center strip of the field probably needs to be replaced for as many times as the center hit the ground Dude, I'm like dude. Are you like it was so bad. He was an open door That was part of the reason why and this is the same thing. We've been saying forever This is the same story bears fans, you know seeing every single year Yes The quarterback needs to do better, but the quarterback it's hard to do better when you're immediately being rushed Yeah, I mean you seen it firsthand. I was just talking with AJ about this today at work You seen it firsthand Like Tom Brady. He had an O line his entire career. Yeah, he goes down to Tampa Bay his first year there He gets a ring. He plays great because they had an O line But then the next year when he was throwing the ball 50 fucking times a game and played like shit He was he was you know in quotes running Brady at 40 whatever years he was running for his life though like He had no O line Tom Brady couldn't do shit like you can only make so much happen and you're talking like The best of the best 100% and that's it's a lot like my homes and that Super Bowl against the fucking was it against the Patriots Where he's like running around like a chicken with his head cut off doesn't have to be. Yeah, you just need a lot especially a center, dude And there was also times where you could see that like Caleb Williams hands just getting jammed with the ball Yes, it was terrible couple low snaps to really really bad just all around just ugly is fuck on the offense inside I had Absolutely, no faith at all that we were like again. I was like after before This game actually happened like after our last record episode I know I was saying like oh, this is gonna be an easy win against the Titans But I was like listening and other things to him like well, maybe this is a trap game. I Said it this game is scary, but I was telling everybody I'm like dude Why everyone thinks they're gonna be so fucking bad like they have pieces on offense and really good pieces on defense like people think they're gonna just like be dog shit and it's like no that team's not they have a first-year head coach That's their biggest disadvantage and a second-year quarterback. Yeah, I Just who made some fucking god awful interception is really bad. Like our great our defense looked abysmal as well The first half it was like wow, how could this get any worse like this is like I'm sitting here and like This is the core that finished the season last year, right? I'm but this is insane. Okay, whatever second half Maddie refluse obviously makes an adjustments that he's as he needs to and the defense goes crazy Montez sweats eats little will of us his cheeks Tyree Stevenson picks him off Jalen Johnson picks him off Obviously plays on on special teams block punt and Jonathan Owens running you back Yeah, that picture of will ever so that I'm sure you've seen once he threw like the pick to Tyree Stee the pick six No, I didn't see it on his knees and he has like his hands on his head I'll see if I can pull it up right now. I know it's like he's obviously trying to make like a Mahomes type throw Yeah, when he's like parallel to the ground Which is a natural instinct I will say I'll give him that on that pick that photo He's sitting there with like his hands on his head like I believe I did that Like in that in that situation though like you know what he's trying to do What he's asking so I'm throwing it back hand well and that's yes And he wanted more clearly is what he was trying to do was throw it out of bounds and just towards the receiver So it wouldn't be called grounding. Yeah, but he it was just too weak of a ball and I mean we he was that Stevenson was just sitting on it, dude. Yeah, that was great. That was perfect although Stevenson Didn't make me very upset at one point of the game yesterday when He got absolutely bought like beasts in by a conquil in the end zone. Oh conquil was a beast Yeah, but I mean that ball needs to be deflected turn your head around that that was a fucking yes It's like the easiest pass to defend. I mean I obviously Not actually but like that was a great that was also why I think will will love us is Going to be good cuz I think he'll be a fine quarterback That was a great read like he knew right away He goes oh that guy's not fucking looking at the ball Yeah, that guy's not even turned around the ball I'm putting the ball right back there in the corner of the end zone and it was perfect. Um Caleb I Was watching earlier. Obviously, I'm not only gonna shit on him He did some very very good things like elite things like yesterday Obviously yesterday, but today I was watching a video where they show a breakdown of a play of him basically like there's a had a QB spy so they're the middle linebacker just sitting there and DJ Moore is running a slant So he looks the linebacker away You see the linebacker start going away and he immediately turns his head throws a ball completes to DJ Moore Was that that one he threw in the real fucking tight window? Yeah? He like hit him like right in the tight. Yeah, that was a perfect Absolute dot. Yes, and that's like the kind of stuff that you see it is like, okay. This is it's gonna be okay That's why I'm not freaking out again. I don't think I mean the only thing he didn't do is Like that's it he protected the ball at least but I mean just to go under 50% completion percentage and also 93 yard like 93 the rest the rest of the high draft we keep a bonus to Jane and Daniels their Grades are horrible as well like they they were I don't think a single one of them had a grade over 50 No, and that's fine, but they weren't like jizzed over like Caleb Williams Which is why I just think because he's the number one pick. Yeah, he should have caught that it was and then Granted, yes on one of the throws he overthrew Keenan Allen Keaton Allen was like he was running ten mile an hour like he was jogging that looked he looked so slow He did look very slow, but also the ball was fucking 15 yards over thrown It was like grossly overthrown. Yeah, I'm not disagreeing that there was another one - where he rolled out to the left and kind of an off-balance throw De to DJ Moore that was really close DJ Moore could have caught that ball if he doesn't give up on the route Obviously, he's giving up on the route. He's slowing down because of the point breaking down Yeah, he's thinking that it's quarterback's probably gonna take off and run Yeah, you know cuz he's still like oh, I'm still used to Justin like Justin would have been taken off That's the difference between Justin Fields to and Caleb Williams, and I was just in field Stan. I still am I still hope he succeeds Justin Fields Looked to run first. I felt like when he got the ball He was always looking for like to see real quick if there was a lane Then went through his reads. He was much more athletic though - in the sense of his mobility Not nothing like Caleb Williams is definitely like athletic as hell and and mobile Yeah, but not like just so like Justin Fields is like Lamar Jackson. They're like yes Yeah, and the same when he comes to that and Caleb Williams wants to be a passer like that's where he's home Yeah, so I get it, but I would have a few times. Yeah, I'd be a passer you need in a whole line Yes, which is why we need to transition to this and you could just see this if my arms not in the way But yeah, this is our O line. I see it. I see a lot of hundreds That's where it doesn't matter But it's also so This is also on place But anyways Coleman Shelton 50 DeAndre Swift 44 he's running back whatever Kevin Jenkins 12 0.5 I Mean, that's just abysmal Travis Homer was better than two of our starting line then that's abysmally bad You cannot have that no you cannot have that no that's just Like what something needs to happen like Brian this is I trust me Ryan polls But this is really like these are the best guys you can find the Nate Davis is obviously I don't know what he's doing his his ego is hurt too because he got pulled I Don't know That's the downside. I think one thing like There's something about like especially the center position Boy, I don't know how you How do you build a fucking center in the in the stat to start of a season? How was there no one better though? That's what I mean bills back up center How was there no one better than this guy? I want to see what his average is it had to be at least 30 yards, which is He did very very well returning the ball yesterday. I don't think it was 30 He did well Obviously, and there's other things that went wrong valus also coming in again to hurdle dunes a he averaged 12.8 yards on his punt returns And he had one kick return for 67 yards. Okay Well, I was mistaken. Yeah, it wasn't quite it was there was a few good ones and a few just regular You know 10 12 yard ones, which is no big deal He'd I liked that better than the guy who just dropped the fucking ball in the very 100% and I'm so We talked about this already, but I am already fucking sick of trying to argue this point like a dude It worked today goes oh no, but but feels Jones. Yeah, probably cuz I I know people say to Kevin Jenkins is good I hate it. He got drafted high second round With a being alignment coming into the the NFL with back problems. And on that strip sack I was sitting there watching the play and I thought the Titans are about to recover it Montes what comes in and just swatch the ball out of there. That was perfect. It was like the longest drive of all time. I swear it was like wow. This was kid was killing me. Yeah um I Did see one thing that I thought was pretty funny granted Caleb Williams didn't play well But Jeffrey Simmons was like he was talking shit to Caleb Williams during the game. Yeah, and Caleb Williams says check the scoreboard Yeah, that's pretty good. It's pretty good and then he goes. Yeah, you guys you haven't done anything whatever dubs a dub dubs a dub I will say on a bright note too was that I was happy to see our play calling definitely looks improved We took a lot more chances more chances downfield. Yeah, a lot of different looks also Our play calling looked very similar that it has for the last 20 years because boy There was a lot of times where we're just handing the ball off right at the fucking middle of the pile And it's like what are we doing second and one past the ball? Honestly for me check down. I'm I'm fine if we run it on second like it happened. It's so predictable It is but that's what I was gonna say like we did that multiple times, but then I think it was the third or fourth quarter One play they did it and I started bitching about that to like a J and everybody I'm like why the fuck are we still just trying to run the ball to go to the outside. Yeah, do something different That's not so that's the problem. And then we did and we get a couple yards. It's like, okay. What do you know? It works. It's like fucking change it up dude Just you can't stop handing it off like can't keep handing it off right up the gut Every fucking time. I don't disagree and obviously we've seen Cole come at There's nothing I want to touch on Cole come at run blocking People forget. He's such a great run blocking. Yes. I don't Yes, he does a phenomenal job One of my favorite players at the edge get outside. Yes, like work towards the sidelines get it get to the numbers like There were a few plays that were I was just like I could have sworn Aggie can't like called like he him or gets you like called Aggie fox Trustman when it was like third and ten or third and eight and like bubble screen outside. Yes I'm like, what are we doing here, dude? That's why are we throwing behind the line of scrimmage very very confused But I said like I said there were some bright spots because it did look like like I said the downfield chances like I liked that we were trying to throw the ball downfield a lot more than we have in previous years Keep going keep it. That's how you're gonna build Caleb's confidence Just keep doing it because eventually he's gonna start getting more consistent. He's gonna get better at it Yes, and it's just that's how you develop a quarterback. That's one of the ways You can't keep doing it. Yeah, we I think make the mistake And like he's gonna throw picks let him throw picks. I'm saying yeah, it's gonna happen Yeah, I think we make the mistake Like we as I mean like like the bears make the mistake of like It kind of feels like it happened with Mitch and it feels like it happened with fields and I don't want to see it happen to Williams is like We tried a couple deep throws and if they don't work it it does make sense that there is a A strategy to the idea of all right. Let's throw some short passes get his confidence up Like just get him going get him in the rhythm get him in the rhythm exactly get a rhythm going get something going but the downside is When you revert to that because the deep ball is not landing Well, why is the deep ball not landing at a high rate? More times than not. It's because our old line is fucking trash and he doesn't have time So bad balls are getting thrown down or yeah, exactly. So therefore Now it turns into like what you've seen with fields and shabisky is like This breakdown are like we need to build his confidence It's like well He's never going to get confidence because you can only throw short passes because he only has time to throw short passes And then that becomes your offense. Yep, which is what the bears offense has been for Fucking 15 years. It feels like yeah, is it's just like little dinkin dunk bullshit right at the line two yards behind the line Like what the fuck are like fix the offensive line that is the problem entire time You hinder the quarterback Yeah pigeonhole him into doing this and it inevitably all comes back to the fact that the O line sucks ass so hard So I'd really like to see that not happen. I mean there were like multiple plays. I saw yesterday of the Like the old lineman all guarding like three of them guarding one guy Yeah Like they would be on Jeffrey Simmons three of them and it's like, okay Well, now The linebackers are running scot-free at Caleb and that's exactly yeah, what are we there were dudes running through on touch yesterday? Yeah, but then like looking at the stats is like yeah There really wasn't that much offense. I mean, it's just because it was time of possession was their big thing Yeah, that that's really what it was. They just had the ball so long And we're just constantly watching our defense out there that it's like man It just feels like they were doing whatever the fuck they wanted, but they kind of weren't and we only let up 17 points Which really on it's not I one half Yeah, not great. It's not it's not great, but it could have it could have been much where if we were playing a good team It could have very easily been yeah, 27 to zero or turn. Yeah, I mean My the thing I was talking yesterday.
