What an exciting thing for our boys to be able to do to play Hudsonville Unity Christian on this beautiful field and Hope College and play on a college campus. It's awesome. This is going to be a blast. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some of our kids. They've never played on a college field or in a campus or anything like that. This is Chad Patterson the voice of Grayling Viking sports along with Eric Tunney the head coach of the Grayling Vikings and coach the tough way to start the season 51-7 loss against Clare and just to spell it out for me you know what were some good things you took out of the game and just to break down the game for us. Well let's be a quick interview. Now good our kids play hard which is good that I don't ever have to question that. They want to win you know give it up to Clare they they got a good squad they got some excellent skill kids and they were clearly by far the the better team they were the 50-0 team that night. I got to do a better job of getting our guys ready they gave us some different looks on defense that we weren't prepared for and that's that's I mean it's unacceptable and I got to make sure our guys are prepared and you know we got a lot of juniors playing and they're very talented guys but that was kind of a welcome to diversity football for some of them and I'm not deterred at all because I know they're going to be good and and I know if we play Clare at week eight or nine let's say it'd be a much different game so to tell the kids like hey some days you know some days get kicked when you're down and that happened Thursday night and but how you bounce back is what makes you a man. When you talked about your juniors getting some playing time I thought really Noah Gabriel he's in there tail back you know Brayton Tuck is was injured for the first game and boy I thought Miles Mead really gave you some great reps at quarterback he showed a lot of poise wouldn't he agree. Yeah absolutely he played great got a helmet sticker for just stepping up big at receiver I mean he he made some nice catches and he got some yards but yeah I mean he had pressure in his face on some rollouts and he stepped up nice and it made some plays you know we wanted to get Corbin and you know it more involved and they kind of took him out so we moved him out at receiver and you know Miles Miles did a great job so we know we can get Corbin the ball in space you know Miles can play QB so we'll be mixing that up I'm sure some more and we really got to get the old line figured out they took away our inside run and if we can't have that they can have eight guys in coverage and we can't throw the ball so yeah the counters are breading butter yeah run of that for sure you know all the years I've been doing it yeah and it wasn't very effective so we got to get better at that on the up front and that's my where I hold near and dear to my heart so we got to get better at that for sure all right and speaking of Corbin he was our north central area credit union player of the game over 100 yards rushing I think he had a half a dozen tackles and just had his nose in everywhere really really flashes of Logan Joseph you know that kind of that Swiss army knife type player that can give you so much just talk a little bit about him yeah he I told the guys in our our Monday meeting I just said Corbin doesn't play perfect but whatever he does he goes a thousand miles an hour and he to a fall like he's running guys over I'm like hey just get out of bounds you know but but it juices our guys up you know he plays a hundred miles an hour every single play and I told our cats I told our guys like hey if you don't know how to play watch that cat on film because he goes everywhere flies 100 miles an hour and that's how grilling football is played so yeah he's he's everywhere he can do it all and we got to find ways to get in the ball in space absolutely and speaking of getting getting him some you know room and space we are going to have some space because we are going to play at a college and on this game Hope College in Hudson is yeah it's a really long story we couldn't find officials and then they could and so we ended up going down there and their fields being used so they said I think their coach played with Coach Stersma or somebody who had to hook up at Hope so they said you want to play there and I said yeah okay that'd be a great experience for our kids obviously it's a far drive so I hope I'm sure many of our fans are listening on the radio but yeah it's hope so great experience yeah so you know I don't think we got like few guys at Elma I'm not sure they're going to be too happy that we're going to hope but you know they might say hey you'll stomp on the on the logo but no it's all good good experience for our kids and yeah hopefully we can put on a show on the turf down there and make some plays well good deal well let's go out and get a win the grand rapids area and then we come here and you see the rainbow and then you just feel like you know we're meant to be here hey you know the kids are excited and i'm sure unity christian's excited i'm not sure if they played here before i think they have but it's going to be fun we got a good group of viking nation fans that showed up here so hopefully we'll give them a little bit of a show yeah absolutely unity christian comes into this game one and oh big win against white hall last week 43 21 greatly vikings of course took it on the chin a little bit uh clear last week 51 7 but uh they are looking to improve in all areas tonight especially um we talked a little bit about it you know they want to they really want to improve their tackling scott yeah and that's one thing that they have worked on all week and they continue to i mean during the summer during the early uh fall workouts whatever and that's one thing that they said you know what we got to get better at and is show them let alone clare head the better athletes last and the better game the better team last week and it showed with a 51 to 7 result for grilling but you know what that's what you do you play the game and you learn from your mistakes you learn from the things that you didn't do right and you also learn from the things you did do good so now we just build on it and just get better for this week's game absolutely we're looking at this unity christian team and they're working out uh some offensive plays during warm-ups here and jadon decoup uh the quarterback the senior quarterback this team looks like he runs at straight t across we've seen that for years and years in uh a place called kingsley you might have heard of them folks they want to stay championship last year and uh this is nothing new to us is it no and that's going to be something that uh coach tony coach nicholas coach car coach kazoski they've all seen it before for the last few years the fact is is they're trying to do a little bit it's a lot a little bit to right hit you up the middle go around they're going to mix it up and that's why they're one of the top teams in the state they play one of the hardest schedules they're playing teams that are ranked in the top 10 of their other respected divisions out at least seven out of nine weeks so that's something that you know grandley's just going to have to say you know you know bite the boat and say let's go at it tuck it in and of course you know you play teams like this you play teams like claire and you get playoff points and that's a big deal too isn't it Scott yeah it's the second season that's what we hope to see in week 10 and that maybe we're traveling maybe we're hosting we're doing something and the kids just want to do that they want to know what could happen yeah i thought the grilling vikings did a great job if there was one strength that they had on defense last week it was just shutting down the interior of that line i mean there was no way that they're running up the middle or off tackle at all and i agree with you a whole hearted least god that's what they need to do i'm gonna go easy here with the mcclean's ace hardware is the kick and it is a good one scott wow that's going to be in the out of the end zone and that's going to be a touch back so the graylee vikings will start on their own 20 what a kick yeah it was a beautiful kick and what i really like to like to see is that grayling heads of issues with their uh with their kick return last week you remember a couple balls bounce we we lost the fumble and it turned over they kind of moved it back a little bit the guy so they kind of filled in that and you can see they work on special teaches past week so what you're saying guys you're already seeing adjustments made oh yeah and that's what you're going to do when you got a coaching step like we have their top match and they know what they're doing on that line we got Brock muscott at left tackle left guard Gavin sycovich and we got miles meet in at quarterback he sends Corbin Allen in motion he fakes the handoff to Allen gets it outside to Austin Schwartz and he is going to be covered up boy i'll tell you what that was just sniffed out by unity christian it was that little fake jet sweep to Corbin Allen then he threw it out to the zwide receiver which was Austin Schwartz Schwartz could not do anything the first man there for unity christian was also the quarterback Jackson de Hoop but he's a defensive back on defense and boy he's a good athlete Scott that play took a little bit too long the ball floated in the air a little bit i mean it's got a little bit of wind heading towards the ball but you know Austin kind of hit no chance okay loss of three on the play second and 13 Corbin Allen at quarterback now rolls it out he gets at the cadence Schubert who had the one touchdown for graling last week from miles mead and Schubert's going to get seven yards right there so it is going to be third and a long five here yeah but that was a nice play though he absolutely the flats and guy and got rocked really hard but never 54 hunger grass but he's a senior linebacker for mommy he he put he put the wood to him right there all right here we go third down big third down for graling early in this game he's going to hand it no he's going to get it to miles mead made has got what's got he's got a 54 first dial up over the 45 to the 46 and we saw miles do that out at least four or five times last week running those great possession pattern patterns and getting you a first down and the thing is with the talented team like unity christian they're going to be moving they're going to be blitzing they're going to be doing things left right everywhere if you can hit some hot quick passes you might get some success early all right here we go miles mead back at quarterback he's in the pistol he's got Noah Gabriel behind him to his right he sends Corbin Allen in motion he fakes it here's the counter to Allen Allen's got a little bit of room and he goes down hard but not before he gets nine yards on first down good tackle there by unity christian but Corbin nice run and that was number 44 Ryer Campbell on the tackle nice uh nice play call and it's coach Jim Sanchez you should say we'll take nine we'll take nine absolutely second down and one you got a lot of options right there you like this down in distance don't you it's nice but it opens up the whole playbook all right miles mead looks outside he's got his man that's uh that is number eight is that is i believe that's daniel hunter and is that daniel number six no that is daniel hunter so those those eights and six is scott well the thing is is last week they had been cleared and had their best athlete again he could not breathe last week right now they're playing off a little bit so you know what those quick passes they just might work but you know what you kind of gauge it a little bit see if you go deep once in a while what kind of first down is that scott absolutely everyone knows you'll find more at fini forward here's the fake jet so it always gets it out to corbin alan corbin alan not going to get much on first down in fact he's going to lose yardage and that was good good pursuit right there by unity christian number 45 ethan decock on that uh tackle right there tackle for loss so corbin alan loses a yard on that it's going to be second 11 what a great play by uh the backside right back for me by roller i mean he came from the other side and got a good good little hit on corbin too and corbin he thought that one really quick he was like okay let's call a different one they are into crusader uh territory now miles me back at quarterback sense cadence shuber in motion miles me rolling out to his right he's got a man out to whoa i thought caden was going to make a nice one-handed grab there probably probably better than he didn't well yeah i mean he trust he just miss office uh tips of his fingertips he took that he took that there by the outside linebacker yeah p got hit let's reset that line for uh grailing tommy sorensen at center and he got ryan statey at the right guard and vongartner at the right tackle along with proc muscat and gavin sickovich i mentioned earlier miles mead and third and 11 the ball is set at the 49 of the crusaders looking to keep this drive alive winds picking up off there too look at it oh absolutely they're going against the wind right now mead back to pass he's got pressure on him oh off the fingertips of corbin allen and corbin allen would have had room to roam there scott and so a big decision time right here for the coaching staff of the grailing vikings with fourth and 11 in just over midfield well the last two place corbin's been followed by their full back and their inside linebacker backs been covering he's been everywhere all right here we go so corbin allen back at quarterback it'll be interesting to see if this is the uh get into an offensive uh stance and then go back and punt it we'll see what's going to happen here corbin allen can try to draw he does he draws him off sides nice job by allen right there got that ethan keheric magic work and as he claps his hands and uh they're gonna count off five here this may uh change the decision here scott you never know i mean now you're back in they're back into their uh their side of the field you know it doesn't really open up a ton but you know what you can take the chance it's early the game you got 836 left in the first quarter no score we've got the ball pretty decent here so you never know all right so the offense is looking over at their coaching staff it looks like they are gonna go for it on this fourth down and a long six he's got trips he's got a trips bunch on the right hand side and he's got Austin Schwartz all alone on the outside and that's who he's looking at and nice pass uh in catch but it's not than the chest bump by his teammate all right here we go miles me now takes over for grilling on the 15 he's got a man out there let's see if they're going to count that as a catch nope and daniel i like the way that they're moving them out of the pocket trying to get away from the pressure because they're putting the pressure right up the middle so he can get to the outside on the opposite own 40 that's end over end and that is going to go through the back of the end zone Noah Gabriel just watches it for Grayling and Grayling is going to start on their own 20 I you know I mean I know there was the turnover Scott and unity Christian turned that into eight points but really I mean they have been able to move the ball a little bit on UC that second drive just really with the penalty that I mean but that first drive we got to kind of build off of that you know pick away at them you're not going to hit a big play like that like they have I mean which it's just not going to happen we're just going to have to methodically try to move the ball down the field and get some points on the score board right now all right here we go miles me back at quarterback he's in the pistol he sends Corvin Allen in motion he fakes the handoff to him they try the counter Noah Gabriel goes right up the middle no gain right there and Max Van Kovreen is all over this field Scott especially on steps and went right behind our safety and our our outside linebacker so he would have had a touchdown 15 yard penalty okay so it is still a first down however there's a 15-yard penalty for an illegal block in the back by unity christian so another i'll tell you what if there's anything that head coach craig tibby can complain about for unity christian in this first quarter it is the penalties they have had five penalties so far including a couple of offsides penalties and so they are probably going to be talking if they're going to be talking about anything it's going to be those penalties yeah and it was the tight end that was coming out they blocked in the back and he turned around and he didn't get the pass so he turned around and it's the first guy and they went through it to him it had r to be 22 now then all right jackson dehoop up under center he's a senior quarterback this unity christian team he's going to fake the hand i want to play by nick getter getter in the backfield for the tfl tackle for loss and that's a positive that you can really get behind us and it's got yeah he shot through the gap he got rid of his blocker and made the play you love a good tfl now you got to you got to expand on it you got to make sure this is third down chance so let's third down and four and again through with the big play for grailing so far he got to make a tackle oh and he's got to get to the outside he's got a lot of room out there and he goes all the way down to the sixth yard line and that is number 10 lucas elliot jr running back we haven't even seen him yet and that was a great great run right there scott you just can't do it you can't make a big play and then just let them basically just walk right to the outside right over the right hand right tackle and get a 30 yard game that was good patient running right there by elliot here we go here's another run this is nice play right there by ryan stadie that's at tfl as well and number 25 isik steinstra on the run right there and that's going to go back to the nine yard line so two tackle for losses for the grailing Vikings let's see if they can build on that they're starting to feel their oats a little bit mentioned it off here and you had asked a question we haven't heard back what's the consecutive streak for Grayling and for maybe our conference on the consecutive shutout streak yeah cuz i mean seven straight you don't hear that often it doesn't matter if you're the most common team in the state or your team that's up and coming you just don't hear that and that's we love to hear it because we're viking fans but you know the kids are just responding to the coach more and the rest of the coaching staff and these kids they're talented and they love to play soccer and that's all you can ask of schedule it is the first the first five games are like you are running through a gauntlet you know we went to clair played on their turf last week we're playing at hope college against unity christian this week uh the state champs next week kingsley stags and then of course you have Trevor city st Francis you know you know the history there we know them very well uh who do we have that we have boing after that no we have the thing is it's we've got to go to escanaba oh we got to go to escanaba that is right i keep forgetting about that and you keep reminding me that we got to go maybe have a mental block about saturday's being uh beat a game so that's what it is we got to go up to escanaba that's a trip where you got to cross the bridge you got to do those things so uh a lot going on uh in the early part of their season of course we have the bling city ramblers coming in for homecoming so it is a very very tough start to the season but i think these two games in particular scott are crusaders tonight so we want to thank the entire staff of hope college and the athletic director just uh for being great host this is a great facility and what a great great opportunity for both the unity christian students and the grilling viking students i mean uh scott i know that we've had a great time in this beautiful facility the booth is nice the field is nice the people are kind and uh it's just been a great time yeah we had a blast i mean it's a three-hour trip for us it's you know tough to do on a friday at the border you know day and all week but you know a lot it was well worth it the kids i mean the result wasn't in grilling's favor but they learned a lot tonight and they're going to build off of this to get get a successful season rolling yeah and to play on a field like this and to get that feeling of big-time football it's just it's got to feel good i know that i would have just relished an opportunity like this when i was a kid i mean this would have just you know made my whole year back uh back when i played for Leslie high school in the late 80s um i would have loved to have played on on a field like this so uh thank you very much to Hope College for hosting really a yeoman's job of just uh taking that quarterback position and uh doing the best he can yes of course he made you know a couple of interceptions he you know he he took his lumps but uh really hang his head that's our level bottom we did at basketball forest on jb and he's gonna do it again in basketball this year but football season ain't over still got seven more games to play and i like what number 12's doing well and i don't think that anybody thought that uh really running the football was going to be part of his game and i i don't have the official stats in front of me but i think that uh miles definitely went over uh 50 yards rushing and i noticed that uh you know um coach the gillot just sent us that and it looks like miles had 67 yards rushing and Corbin had 42 and gabro had 21 with this touchdown nice so uh 67 yards rushing and really i mean that's not what you think of when you think of miles mead uh and then uh passing 10 to 17 117 yards and so uh you know there you go
