(upbeat music) - Welcome to the ASHP official podcast, your guide to issues related to medication use, public health, and the profession of pharmacy. - Thanks for joining us in this episode of Educator Essentials. The podcast where we talk with our members about success stories, best practices, and strategies for faculty, preceptors, and those involved in the education of the pharmacy workforce. My name is Hannah Post, and today we will be chatting with Sierra Yount, Senior Clinical Pharmacist Critical Care, and Raishi, Senior Clinical Pharmacist Emergency Medicine, both of UC Davis Health, about artificial intelligence use in clinical precepting, and their upcoming educational session titled "Pharmacy, Experiential Precepting in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" at the 2024 ASHP Virtual National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference. Thanks for joining us today, Sierra and Ray. So this is an incredibly timely topic. - Ray, why is the use of AI and pharmacy something that pharmacy preceptors should be focusing on? - Yeah, like you said, it's a very timely topic. AI has really gained a strong foothold in virtually every part of our lives. Both our business, professional, and our daily lives. Its popularity has ballooned the last five years, and it's being incorporated into apps with a whole bunch of stuff that we'll use on our daily basis. So it's only gonna become more prominent moving forward. So this is going to be helpful in terms of adapting that into our ability to precept. And current next generation of pharmacy learners will most likely will be using AI in some capacity. And we wanna make sure that our preceptors will also be aware of these AI technologies. And really the reason why we were actually initially interested in this topic is because we actually did a survey for our pharmacy preceptors, both at the School of Pharmacy, as well as our clinical site. And they really indicated importance in the knowledge of using AI as well as getting more and more familiar with them in a clinical setting. So this is the best time to really get familiar and comfortable in using AI in order to kind of guide our pharmacy learners to appropriately use AI, but also able to use it incorporating to our clinical practice and become even better practitioners. - ASHP is definitely looking forward to spotlighting your expertise at the virtual pharmacy preceptors conference. Sierra, what are some of the strategies you'll be covering to assist preceptors with navigating AI while precepting? - Yeah, we have kind of a jam-packed agenda for that. First, we're gonna be reviewing some of our free available AI technology, including pros and cons and kind of just the variability across the different sites and platforms since there are so many. And so we'll have a couple of examples of how there might be variability across the website and really finding the type of website that's gonna work best for you and your needs. That'll include some interactive sessions for that. And then we'll get straight into kind of how we work on applying this to our clinical areas for both precepting and learning. And so first, I think a big majority of that is to work on how do we effectively prompt the AI model? I think that's an often easy and easily missed step. You kind of put in a simple answer and you're gonna get a simple output. But really, how can you work on refining that prompt and getting the revised output that you want? So we'll do some interactive scenarios with that and then look at how can we apply some of these programs or questions in how to further the education of our learners and maybe kind of offset some of that workload or repetitive tasks for ourselves and task AI with that option. So a lot of interactive kind of hands-on, really getting people excited about keeping an open mind and learning how they can utilize these programs. So you mentioned the pros and the cons. We know there's still hesitation with AI use. What are some potential concerns and disadvantages of implementing AI and experiential education? - Yeah, with any sort of new technology being implemented in the regional world, there's always a concerns or issues that comes with its innovation. So for example, learners can potentially misuse or overuse the AI instead of actually learning about the topics themselves, which can potentially compromise the integrity of their learning. Additionally to that, there are also illegal issues with misusing AI in which case, it can potentially infringe on copyright materials or even potentially going into patient care or patient sensitive information. So all of that's going to be carefully talked about with our learners in order to make sure they don't overstep the boundaries of the AI use. Additionally, with AI itself, it's actually not very much 100% accurate. In fact, it's far from it. Yeah, it's can potentially hallucinate and provide false information that are very hard to discern from the uninitiated or the non-acknowledged. So it's really hard to tell what's real and what's not. Furthermore, unlike something like a plagiarism detector, which can be easily pulled information from a website, AI detectors are actually AI themselves and there's a range of accuracy in terms of how well they actually text false information or AI generated information. So it's really difficult to tell 100% with 100% accuracy that something is AI generated or not. So all of that is going to be potential issues that you run into when precepting a learner that are utilizing AI for augmenting part of their learning. With us, we're trying to develop strategies or policy to potentially help to create an open dialogue between the learner and the preceptor in order to openly share their utilization of AI as well as learning together in this sort of new novel field that we're all going to be facing the next community years. Yeah, I'm sure our preceptors and our attendees are really going to lean on your experiences. They also enter into this very new space that we're all facing. It's all the time that we have today. I want to thank CRN Ray for joining us. CRN Ray will be presenting their session Pharmacy Experiential Precepting in the era of artificial intelligence during ASHP's National Pharmacy Preceptors Conference on October 3rd.
