On ESPN 1000 and we're streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. With David Kaplan, Jonathan Hood with you. We've got Shay, we've got J Moore. We've got you for a three hour ride on this Tuesday morning with open full lines for you. Three, one, two, three, three, two, three, seven, seven, six, our telephone number. And Cap in the afterglow of the Bears and their victory against the Tennessee Titans by the score of 24 to 17. There are a lot of questions, not only in our city, but around the country about the Chicago Bears as far as what the offense did not do. We all know that what we saw on Sunday was a microcosm of what we've seen a lot of as a Bears fan. Strong defense, strong special teams, the offense, and way, way behind. But the Bears found a way to win the football game. Now, there's a real concern about Caleb Williams after week one for some people. For me, it's kind of what we talked about all summer. It's a rookie quarterback that has to learn on the job cap. And I think that it was, come to Jesus moment for Caleb Williams, who never is nervous when he's out there, never gets nervous. But one thing, you might not have been nervous on Sunday, but he understood this is the National Football League, this is not college. - So watching that game again yesterday, so I've not watched it live and then condensed twice. All 22 will drop later, I'll watch that later today. In watching that, they got manhandled up front. - Now, that Tavondre Sweat shade was telling us in our morning, Squire, that the reason he slipped into the second round is because he had a DUI before the draft. - Understandable. - That shouldn't happen. That's an idiotic decision. The fact of the matter is at 65366, that dude's a monster. And in Jeffrey Simmons, and Harold Landry, and all these other guys that they ran at Caleb, no excuses. He missed on the Keenan Allen throw. He missed on the DeAndre Carter throw. That would just cost him everybody. Can we not panic, please? They're wanna know. They found a way to win a football game that they had no business winning because their offense was horrible. Go back to work. Roma Dunezay is gonna be sidelined. It looks like for at least a week, and just run the football. Why are we running Gerald Everett out there? Almost twice the number of snaps is Cole Kameh. Oh, Dunezay played a good chunk of the game before he tweaked his knee. - Yeah. - You had, I wanna ask you a question, all of you. Dunezay, Caleb Williams, DeAndre Swift, Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, can we agree? Those are their five best offensive players. - That is correct. - Che, you agree? - Yeah. - Okay. - Jay Moore, you agree? - I think you would, okay. How many plays did those five guys play together? - How many, I don't know. - 10. - Yeah. - 10! What are we doing? Shane Waldron, that's your call. That's not an Eber Flus thing. That's the O coordinator. Gerald Everett's fine as an extra guy. What are we doing playing him 27 or whatever number of snaps? Come on, man. Run the football this week, establish some tempo, run some play action, and get the kid comfortable, and then he's gotta hit some throws. - Okay, well, a couple of things. First of all, running the football, I think it was Paramount for this young rookie quarterback. We talked to Matt Eber Flus about this yesterday. He joined us yesterday at 8.20. He's gonna join us after every Bears game right here on cap and J-hood. It's Paramount for the Bears to run the football. We talked about DeAndre Swift. You take away the 20 yard runny hat cap. Remember, he had 10 carries for 30 yards. One of them was a 20 yarder. The rest of it was kind of pedestrian. Overall, the Bears ran the football for 84 yards, good for 22 carries. Okay, they have to run the football more effectively. I think that over the next few games cap, we will find out how special this running game will be. It's one thing to chip and chip and chip away like the Titans did against us on Sunday. But I want to know who's gonna be special out of that running back room. I like DeAndre Swift because obviously as a Georgia Bulldog, I watched him at his very best in college. He's been very solid in the National Football League. But again, I need to know about Colille Herbert. I need to know about Roshan Johnson when he's healthy. I want to know how they'll be able to work this running game because this is Shane Waldron. He likes the ball in the air. He likes the game to be vertical. Let's just see how this works and how this operates over the next four or five games. But running the football is important. No matter how big the front is, 'cause now Houston's coming up on Sunday. I think that's tough. Run the football and guess that front? It is, but you still have to run the football and take time off the clock for the young rookie quarterback. - Correct, now their front four is not as good. They pressure the quarterback maybe better. Will Anderson, but their stout type guys in the middle are not as difficult to block as what you saw from Tennessee. Tennessee has a top five, front four. That front four is a beast. Run the football, do your job blocking, get freaking Nate Davis's ass into the game. He was terrible. So they ended up going to Ryan Bates. Nate Davis makes 10 million a year. When you pay a significant amount of money, he may not be the best right garden football, but he's certainly decent. He looked horrible running around, not getting the body of anyone. And then Coleman Shelton was just overwhelmed by the interior of that defensive front. So that's gotta get cleaned up today. - My hope is is that the Bears can reach the lofty goals that you have for them in the regular season. Hopefully they will win 11 games. But the reason why that I paired back on the win total is because of all we talked about in the first seven minutes. And that is some of the question marks, that negatives. Just the question marks about the Chicago Bears, which we just laid out as we talk about the offensive line, how they've all got to be come together, how they all got to be able to work in concert, how they got to be more productive. We talked to Tom Thayer about the offensive line. He wasn't sure about the offensive line coming in because he gave them a solid C. And I believe it's Tom Thayer, so it's always going to be on a curve. It's the truth, but he's just going to tell you like yeah, it's about the best it could be as a C right now. And he's correct. Tom is as honest as they come. It's a curve, but he's a bear, but he also will tell you like, I think it's a C now, but that gives room for improvement by giving them a C. And because you need anchors on that offensive line, along with a quarterback that has to be comfortable in the pocket cap. And again, where was the success for Caleb Williams? Outside of the pocket. Go back for the majority of the completions he had, it was outside of the pocket. - Is that not true? - Correct. - Okay. I mean, nothing wrong with that. I'm just saying that at some point, it's going to have to be in the pocket for him to stand in there stoically and get it to DJ Moore and Kean Allen and Roma Dunesay. Some of the better quarterbacks that we saw in week one, even Matt Stafford had to hang in there and just take it. Like I'm not going to be moving around. I got to get the ball out quickly. And whatever happens, if I get knocked down, I get knocked down. But a lot of it was him rolling out of the pocket like he did at USC. - Again, this is a young quarterback learning on the job. - Now, the one thing that did surprise me, Caleb Williams, average time to throw till he got the ball out. 2.71 seconds. - Was supposed to be. - Yeah, not a problem. But when you got Kean and Allen on a double move, wide open down the left sideline, you can't be four yards past him. Can't, the Andre Carter, can't miss him. I'm not asking you to throw 100% completion, but you got to be better than that. - What you just laid out is the Barris Five. Not the Jackson Five, the Barris Five. - Yeah. - Guys that you believe are the cornerstones of the offense. - I mean, okay, you have the snap counts, so do I. Why is Marseilles de Louis on the field for seven snaps? We're trying to run the football. - Yeah. - You signed him to block. That's what his job is. He's not going to catch 75 passes, 11 touches. That's not who he is anymore. That was 15 years ago. But the dude is one of your leaders in the trenches. Where's Cole come at? One catch for four yards. What are we doing here, Shane Waldron? - That's on the quarterback too. Now that's all together. 'Cause, but going back to what I told you before the season cap, everyone has to learn one another. Like Shane Waldron, yes, he's been in camp. Yes, they've had preseason games, but he's got to get acclimated to who's best on the field at what particular time also. I mean, look at the facts. The facts aren't that the Bears has starting field position at the Tennessee 48, 34, and 31 and at their own 43 in their 10 possessions. Not to score an offensive touchdown has got to be really troublesome for Shane Waldron, Mattie, Reflex, and the Bears. Think about it. You've got good field positions still couldn't get into the end zone. Now we've highlighted the drop by Allen, but the point is those that it was going sideways, not forward for the Chicago Bears offensively. Think about that field position, 48, 34, 31, your own 43 and you had 10 possessions and you could not move the football. Now again, I don't expect that to be the case all season. We're just highlighting and talking about what needs to be improved from week one. Yeah, so the snap counts that I have offensive line-wise, Braxton Jones, all 56 snaps, 100%. Same with Coleman Shelton. Same with Darnell Wright, who in my watching, and again, I haven't watched y'all 22. I don't have the eye of Tommy or Olin or Yurko, but I think I know what I'm looking at. I thought he played his best game. David Jenkins was on the field for 56 snaps. Obviously Caleb was. DJ Moore, 88%. Roma Dunes, a 77%. DeAndre Swift, 70%. But then you go down, Colcom, that's only on the field for 48% of the snaps. Well, Gerald Everett's out there for 61% of the snaps. We should tell the audience why that was for Everett over at Colcomett. Because he has played in the Shane Waldron system, but he's not a great blocker. Colcom, block now. Col's your best play. You're paying him $14 million a year for a reason. Get him on the field, man. Waldron's new, he's got to realize that. But again, Nea fights in the Chicago Bear system. He doesn't know that. We have, we're armed with the knowledge. All of us as Bears fans know how multifaceted that Colcomett is. Do you think Waldron knows that? I'm sure he's seen the tape. But again, he goes with what he knows in Everett, because he's worked with him. That's his guy. Yeah, but again, who's the better player? That's Colcomett, and it's not close. I understand. 100% right. But I mean, these are the things that you work out when you have new guys in the system. Caleb Williams knew, Shane Waldron knew, Everett knew. This is what happens. Because now what we saw last year, where we thought that the error was pointing up for the Bears offensively with weapons, then you add on to these weapons. Now everyone has to be able to be on the same page. It doesn't sonically happen just because we have training camp. It takes time. Is that not fair? Fair. It just takes there. All the points that you are making are 100% fair, but it just doesn't happen. It doesn't work in week one. Hopefully, as we move on, that we'll be able to have more of a balance, and that these weapons will be able to get the football and really pay dividends for the Bears. I challenge anybody. Put the tape on and tell me Nate Davis earned his paycheck, because he did not. And that's why he was taken out of the rotation, and he played 18 snaps the entire day. 18, while Ryan Bates played 38 snaps. And if Ryan Bates is better, play him. But sweet mother of God, you're paying Nate Davis $10 million a year, and that was the effort you got. I watched one play where he literally ran around like, who do I block here? Nobody. Nobody. Come on, man. What are we doing? You know, as a general manager, you're not going to bat 1,000 every time. And this Nate Davis experiment that we're seeing, Cap-- I mean, at some point, you might have to move on, and then you just check it off for Ryan Paul's like, yep, I know you tried. That didn't work. Correct. Because you need to be able to have different makers for the offensive line to be a hold up for Caleb Williams. Well, Caleb Williams moved around in the pocket for a reason. He moved around because that offensive line was not holding up. Again, it's a miracle. He was only sacked twice. Correct. It's a miracle. That you're correct. Because you are absolutely correct. Because it wasn't the worst we've ever seen, but it was not good enough to work with a rookie quarterback and Caleb Williams. It was not good enough. It was not. So this week, you've got to be able to keep the offense on the field and keep their offense off the field. C.J. Strahd's a beast, man. That was an impressive win to go into Indy. Indy's a good team. Beat them 29-27. That was a tough game. And they found a way to win. You better run the football and establish it so you keep the clock moving. 3-1-2-3-3-2-E-S-P-N-3-3-2-3-7-7-6-0-4 number. So what is your concern level for the Bears' offense? You saw the Bears win 24-17, but no offensive touchdowns. The defensive special teams came through for the Bears. But as you watch that game on Sundays, what you reflect back was your concern level for the Bears' offense. Coming up, we'll hear from Matt Ira Fluz, the head coach for the Bears about Caleb Williams' performance on Cap and J-Hut for show. [MUSIC PLAYING] This is Cap and J-Hut. They beat in the traffic commute, so you don't have to. [MUSIC PLAYING] Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, oh. On the ESPN Chicago. [MUSIC PLAYING] It's a Cap and J-Hut morning show on ESPN 1000 and streaming on the ESPN Chicago app. Here's hoping that you're going to have a great Tuesday. We'll hear from Jesse Rogers with the latest on the Cubs and Sox and everything else. Baseball, coming up at 750, but Cap and I want to get your thoughts in about the Bears and their offense. 3-1-2-3-3-2-3-7-7-6. From my standpoint, Cap, I'm never over the top about one game. We could talk about some of the things that happened in the game, the good and the questionable and the bad if it's there. But I'm never over the top about one game. I know that we waited a long time to see Bears football. And I know that many had sold your field. You could hear the groans as the game went along from the faithful, like, oh, god, this is Justin Fields all over again, or this is-- an offense is not moving. But you heard the excitement when the Bears were able to get the turnovers, when they were able to score. You heard the excitement there. I can understand the groans and the moans of, oh, look at this offense. But you didn't expect 500 yards and four touchdowns in the first game. No matter what people on TV are telling you, like, this is going to be like the next Patrick Holmes. Those moans are like Patrick-- he's not Patrick Mahomes. Not even close. He's a rookie. Allow him to develop. He deserves that. Like any other rookie that comes through the doors at House Hall, they deserve to be able to have some grace. Correct. He's going to be good. It just wasn't going to be Sunday. Yeah, if I was him, I would never turn on a radio. I'm talking about for him. A radio, a TV, nothing. I would get my rest, which I hear he's good about getting his sleep. Get up, get to the building, eat, get in my films, get in the virtual room where they can simulate the pass rush, go through all my stuff, get to my meetings, go to practice, get my therapies, get my massages, get my sauna, and my hot tub. Go home, eat dinner, get back in bed, and go to sleep. I would not pay attention to any of the noise. His focus has got to be to be a better quarterback, and he will. And you gave the numbers yesterday, Cap, about the lack of success, especially for the first game for rookies in this league. It is difficult. Oh, in 14, the last 14 times a rookie number one overall pick has started a game to begin his career as a rookie. The last one to win prior to Caleb on Sunday was David Carr in 2002. So all these people freaking out on social media just need to stop. Really, please. As promised, we hear from Matt. He refludes the head coach for the Bears. He's with us after every Bears game here on Cap and Jhood. His thoughts about Caleb Williams' performance. Yeah, I think he would say that too. Just his footwork a little bit off at times. But again, he threw a lot of good passes too. So I met with him this morning, and that was really about it. His vision, as far as his vision was good. Yeah, I thought he was good. I thought he saw it well. I thought he saw the coverage contours. He saw zero, then adjusted on the fly. In terms of post-snap, I thought he did a nice job. The 19-year-old sack, you know, felt me good speed. But you see Davis kind of touching and go block on the screen. What's the assignment there? You mentioned after the game that the only miscommunication with somebody got blown up. Yeah, you just got to really stop that penetration. It can't get on the quarterback that fast. And, you know, when you do that, that play is going to be OK. And again, you know, he tried to evade the sack and tried to move around. He was just on him too fast. And we'll get that cleaned up. Can you just find a way to turn it there? Is there nothing he can do to cut the ground to somewhere? Yeah, I don't know. When you turn around like that, he's right on top. Yeah, I don't know. Again, a month out there planned. But my evaluation was he took care of the football, which he did all day. In the pocket, you know, I know he had the two sacks, but did a nice job of taking care of the football. And that was really the difference in the game. You know, the quarterback on the opposing team had the giveaways, and we didn't. Yeah, it did come down to that. We'll let us turn it over like a three-year-old by just giving the Bears a touchdown. And Caleb Williams did not have any interceptions. Correct. The one that, if I was the... Did you see the quote from Brian Callahan, the Titan said, "Coach told the media down there yesterday?" If we would have just punted at the end of every possession the second half, we win the game. That is a direct shot at your quarterback. Hey, you, correct. I love the honesty. Because that's a fact. Yeah, that's true. We would have won the football game. I was talking to Tyler yesterday. If Will Levis doesn't just fall to his knees after throwing the pick six, and I don't know, runs down Tyreeks Stevenson, Bears can feel gold there, right? You still have a chance like... Yeah. I don't know if he had a... Did he have a path to get to him? Dan, I don't know, I'm just making the point. Maybe stick to the play instead of dropping to your knees and looking to the Lord for answers. There's nobody coming to save you. You weren't here yet in town. Hoodie was. Jake Cutler threw a pick against the Chargers that sold your field Bears are seven and one at the time. And he tried to run the guy down, I guess what he did. Dislocated his thumb was done for the year. Remember? Yeah, it did. Season over. They barely won again. And everyone... Lovey Smith said, "What are you doing? "We don't want our quarterback tackling the guy "unless it's to save the game at the end. "I understand he's a football player. "You gotta be smarter." I just, you know, if he doesn't just flick it, try to flick it out of bounds and it goes into Stevenson's hands. What a tease. They win the ballgame. He's terrible. Listen, Titans coach taking shots at Caleb, great. Maybe look at your own quarterback. Holy cow. Oh, I don't think he took a shot at Caleb. He was just talking about... We did the job defensively. If we just would have punted, we gave it away three times in the fourth quarter, he said. He's right. There's a Denny Green element to what Callahan is saying. The Bears are who we thought they were. Like, we had 'em. We were up 17 and we let 'em off the hook. Yep. There's that element of like, we had the game. We had the game. We had the... Yeah, I mean, seriously. I think there was a little element to that. There was also, as I was watching the video, there's a play that people are writing about where Coleman Shelton got run over, do you remember? I did see that on the film. And Olin Crews put out a video. He got tripped by Tevin Jenkins. Tevin took his legs out. Down he went. And Olin tweeted, yes, Shelton needs to play better. But if you're showing this video, at least he got tripped by Jenkins on this play. So I clicked on it to get... He's right. He's right. Took his left foot out. Kinda hard when you got a 366-pound man. Bull-rushing you and someone trips you. 3-1-2-3-2-3-2-3-7-7-6 is our telephone numbers. We talked to you about the Bears. You're a level of concern about the Bears' offense. Craig was the first to call from Nora, John Cap and Jay Hood. Hey, Craig, good morning. Good morning. How are you? Well, well, thank you. How are you? Good, man. I'm good, man. So, look, thank you for talking about Playcom, 'cause I was gonna call in yesterday and ask about that. But then, hoodie, you laid down the law yesterday morning very early. You said, hey, don't talk about Playcom. We're not doing that today. We don't wanna hear about it, right? And then, I went to WTRT at like 7.15. But, yeah, Playcom, I mean, come on. Yesterday, you guys covered stuff and stuff, no tight ends, right? Pressure up the middle, you move the pockets, what you normally do, right? How about some bootlegs? Did you see a single screen pass yesterday? Design screen play? I didn't see it. But, I mean, you gotta, you gotta talk Playcom. You have to, but I know they made mistakes and every day I wasn't expected much for game one. But, man, I mean, you got a question to Playcaller. Craig, I would say that when you struggle as much as the bears struggled offensively, it's on everybody. I don't understand that the low hanging fruit is always gonna be coaching. But, I would say, even for what Caleb was given, it still wasn't good enough, where he was under-throwing, guys. It's all of the above to me. That's why yesterday I said, we can't just have three hours of Shane Waldron sucks after the first game of the regular season. That's not fair. Just like it's not fair to say that that's who Caleb Williams is. There's always a happy medium. I think that everybody was terrible, offensively on Sunday. They're not enough to be able to score points. That is for sure. - I agree with that, fair. - That's fair. - No, that's very fair. And then, but if you watch the two to 49ers last night with a short pass, short pass, short pass, end up having a ball for 45 minutes, you know? I mean, you know, just move to Shane's, man, you know? Move to Shane's, man. - I agree, listen, Craig, I agree with you. I appreciate your telephone call. That's their system. That's their system is to dink and dunk and be able to set up for the long pass. This is why McCaffery is number one in fantasy leagues because they know he could run the football. He's multifaceted. He could do a lot of different things. But what we saw from that game last night against the Jets, okay? They were able to find a way to implement their system. Like whoever's back there, you got to run the football. You got to do what McCaffery does. Okay, I could do that, coach. And guess what? They ran over the Jets. - They did. They ran over. - But that's a system that's been in place for a while under Shanahan. - Yep. - I know, Cap, he hasn't been able to knock down the brass ring yet. But he is very good at being able to be an offensive play caller. Steve and Oakland is with us on Cap and Jhood. We talk bears. Hey, Steve, good morning. - Good morning, guys. How's it going? - Good man, what's up? - Hey, I just want to say real quick, you know, everybody that is spewing out negativity towards Kayla Williams, you know, with him being the first overall pick, all the expectations, the only through 94 yards in that opener. How many interceptions did he throw? How many times did he fumble the ball? If that were Justin Fields dealing with that pressure, the guy would have fumbled the ball five times and threw two interceptions in the game. Let's give the guy a little credit where it's due, being his first NFL game, regardless of how he does not perceive that he has pressure or that he deals with pressure. I just want to give the credit where the credit is due. Obviously, I think he's going to be a better quarterback than we've probably ever had, but I think it's all really going to rely on that play caller. What you said, Cap, we need someone to send out an SOS to Shane Waldron. The NFL, the league is an adaptor die league. If you go into every game like that, you're going to force your defense to win every game for you. And they're going to squander any talent that Kayla Williams has. So please, guys, any chance you guys get Shane Waldron adapt or die? Figure it out. Yeah, he went too long. I would say for the quarterback, the same thing though, the same edict that you just put out there, Steve, that's for the quarterback in the offensive players as well. Adaptor die line, right? And he is a fairly accomplished play caller. And last year, I believe Seattle had the fewest turnovers of any team in the national football league. I believe it was 13. This is a guy who studied under Sean McVay in Los Angeles, where he was the Rams tight ends coach, promoted a passing game coordinator, promoted a passing game coordinator and quarterback coach, went to Seattle, and then when Pete Carroll retired, he was a free agent. The Bears, he had a lot of teams after him. He is an accomplished coach. So this is one game. They didn't play well. They had a rookie quarterback. They went up against a great front. No excuses. All facts go out and play better on Sunday. Yeah, I would need a body of Stevie. I would need a body of work before we are going to call him what people on social media has called him. Are we getting John shoot back? Is this Pep Hamilton? No, this is not what we're talking about here. This guy here resurrected Gino Smith's career. Gino Smith was closer to being a Fox sports college football analyst than quarterback until Shane Waldron came around. His career was done, Cap, until Waldron's like, let's accentuate the positives and hide the negatives, Gino. Go back to your old West Virginia film. What were you good at? And look at what happened. like he's he's a viable quarterback in this league thanks to Shane Waldron curry so I just you know again all encompassing is gotta get better it's not just one coordinator or one coach or just one quarterback it's all got to get better and it will all of it it will call we have them going to playoffs and if not guess who's going to be punching at clouds around here me 3 the bears and the topic is what is your concern level for the bears offense 3 1 2 3 3 2 3 7 7 6 our phone number the ESPN football analyst Dan Alofsky was on unsportsman like and talked about Caleb Williams and how he expected Lee looked overwhelmed in game one against Tennessee not Arizona State anymore bub no it wasn't all that unexpected I think Tennessee's defensive line is fantastic to me it looked like Caleb was thinking often when he got the ball of 100 different things what's the coverage what's my play what are my feet supposed to be doing what drop is this don't leave the pocket and so just overwhelmed not unexpected you know I think their offensive line was outmatched at times as well so and I also I also believe there was multiple moments when you know Caleb tried to do some of the USC stuff and you just realize it's not happening you know not not as much as it did you know there's a couple times on first down where you know like he tries to run around or whatnot and then it's second and 13 it went to second and 28 once so I think there was like that that moment of alright again I've said this offseason when can you and when can't you and he's still got to learn that but I'll just a lot of information overload for him Dan Orlowski fair enough like I'm texting with the great Tom Waddle it'll be a waddle Wednesday tomorrow and on that topic he look the offensive line in the interior I thought the tackles were okay the interior was terrible Tabajang it's had some moments where he's good but the right guard the center that stuff got overwhelmed but there was also player error out there that's what Tommy's texting me that these are also highly paid players do your freaking job you got a guy wide open down the left sideline your generational quarterback hit him those things have to get better and I believe that they will I'm not concerned in the slightest but he's right it's not Arizona State anymore Bob that's not it's an NFL team but there was times I thought that he thought he was under the lights in Los Angeles and it's expected what it's what we talked about leading into the game cap like he's gonna revert back to hey man I know that I we got all this in camp and we had our preseason games with man when I'm in peril I feel like I could be able to run out of this thing by the way speaking him with him running I know that in his mind cap he's got to think I got to get the ball out in two and a half two point seven seconds but I like that he was running with the football twos like man there's just nobody open or or the rush is coming I got to run I'm glad he's able to do that now I don't expect him to be Justin Fields out there but I do like that he was able to run for some yardage to try to keep the chains moving the field goal in the fourth quarter that Cairo Santos hit it's so nice to have a guy who's as consistent as he is not gonna make every one but he's a really good kicker Caleb could have easily thrown the ball away on third down he picked up six or seven yards and that got you in range to pick up a field goal which turned out to be a huge part of the game Taylor and Hyde Park is with us on Cap and Jay Hood as we talk bears here he is Taylor good morning yeah what's up guys good morning what's going on all good man how are you good good don't well don't well I'm actually headed out to the west side of Illinois to go visit golf so nice I'm up a little early good problem well at least get it while it was the warm so yep I the offense let's not sugarcoat it I think Caleb Williams is gonna be a stud I think he's gonna be great I think it only bears a lot of games hopefully the offense was huge it was horrible yep the quarterback was horrible the running back was horrible the receivers dropping passes horrible all this expectation of all these three dozen outside you know which are considered pro ballers one maybe an all-pro a veteran a rookie who was a stud in college and they didn't help the guy at all the running game horrible the side that won run for 20 yards so let's keep it a book this was basically the bears of all we've seen this story happen 20 30 40 years consistently the bears are great on defense right on what seems and the offense sucked and I don't think that's gonna be the case moving forward but we have one game under the belt and we have to keep it a bucket what it is it sucked like it just sucked if the defense didn't get that pick six and there wasn't a blocked putt I mean they didn't even move the ball to get into a touchdown position so look we didn't you know say he's a rookie we can say Shane Walden all that stuff is fine but week two I'm not saying he has to go for 400 yards in five touchdowns but it has to just look better and because he's a rookie the receivers have to help them out you know now and almost look just interested and it just seems as if like you know the ball should be placed somewhere which maybe his feet not as accurate to the point over thinking things but those better receivers have to help them out in any way possible so look it just sucked yes it did Taylor we appreciate the phone call the guy the Allen point is unfair you don't know what's going on in the helmet you might have been disinterested in Allen after he missed that that ball but that's unfair you don't you don't talk to say a football player is disinterested unless you're watching the Carolina and New Orleans Saints game you want to see disinterested watch watch the DBs in the Carolina game they gave up oh I mean pretty close cap yep they gave up you get demoralized after a while right and just like my god how bad are we like right now and did not did that was not disinterested Keenan Allen and I was concerned about him too you remember that play in the back of the end zone but you came up lim like oh here we go let's not do let's not do this now this early yeah we only expect you for 16 games apparently he's okay okay now was concerning though right it's like oh god DJ Moore said yesterday that was just old man stuff okay okay I was concerned you saw that yeah three one two three three two ESPN is our phone number Sam and Schomburg on cap and Jay Hood Sam good morning Sammy Sam Sam that's a no what I'm from Jay damn all right all right all right Sam thank you very much you add your shot kid you fumbled yeah all right call again Sam on a cleaner line we appreciate it Jesse Rogers the drunk Bears fan Jesse Rogers will join us coming up next what do you have one cocktail on cap and Jay Hood oh I'm sweating welcome back to Captain Jay Hood you're officially locked in Chicago's home for sports ESPN Chicago now time for Jesse Rogers and he's brought to you by West Coast men's health helping men with ED and chronic pain for over five years go to Lynn's health West Coast men's health dot com and Jesse is on the hotline that be the car ex tired on a hot line good morning Jesse how are you I am good boys good morning to you what's going on are you sober from Sunday you were you were sloppy you were sloppy on the text chain I was a little sloppy yes I was well I was a little upset as that game went on as you could imagine it in a lot of ways it felt like last year opening day against the Packers right but the difference was every I felt like there was going to be a big play and it just never came I wasn't sure last year I was sure something big was gonna happen eventually I'm talking about an offense and never came luckily it happened on defense but I was all hyped for that game and then it just felt like the same mode same on the offense but we know that's just we want right so Jesse talked to me about the Cubs they did get a big win last night 10 to 4 over the Dodgers 2x Dodgers Ballinger and Bush had monster rights for hits 3 RBI's for Michael Bush talked to me about the state of the ball club right now because I think bleacher nation wrote there was a little bit of what was the word that they use a little bit of things weren't all roses over there really dissension front office friction I think is what they termed it well I think they're trying to figure out exactly what they are and I don't know that they know especially an offense I think we kind of know what's going on in the mound having said that I wouldn't just say Porter Hodges my closure for the next five years I would I would investigate getting a veteran closure if you're serious about winning I think they're trying to figure out exactly what they are offensively and and then that's what is the mystery here like what are they there's a lot of dot dr. Jekyll mr. Hyde going on the season even lately when they've been good offensively like last night they got shut out what three times last week and scored two runs in the entire Yankee series so what is real what isn't we'll go back to the same old thing here look at the Dodgers look at the Yankees top of the order 900 OPS 900 OPS 876 OPS I'm talking about Betzotani Freeman the Cubs half is at 8.01 Suzuki's a little bit over 800 they don't have a third guy over 800 that's the difference between the elite and the not so elite Jed was using war as his barometer do we have enough war in in our top players and the answer is no so whether it's OPS or war they're trying to figure out exactly what they are is they had the soft season I think he's going to try to take a big swing for a player cap we've talked about it I just don't know if he's going to get it done well what does it mean when Bob Nightingale who dropped this there is internal for this is a quote from Nightingale there is internal friction in the Chicago Cubs front office high ranking officials say but despite their disappointing season Jed Hoyer will return in 2025 I you'd have to ask Bob exactly what he means by that I I've been playing a lot right yeah it is but it's Bob I don't so if it was socks news good I get my cup there's some Jesse there you go I will just tell you they're not real with it but I've been you know with the season but I've been telling you all along that that Tom was not gonna fire Jed with one year to go I think next year is a big year but again I don't you know friction I don't I don't know what that what he's referring to exactly all I know is that they're not thrilled with what's gone on over there it doesn't mean they're gonna fire Jed but they've got to figure out exactly what kind of team they have going into a critical year I don't think there's any doubt that he's got to make the playoffs next year he the team everyone has to make the playoffs look 40 million for the manager and it and it gave them nothing really it gave them nothing so something's got to change next year so cap that would be something Jesse this would be something that should be there should be some friction and some question marks because you're going through another season again that you're gonna be a non playoff team could that friction cap Jesse beef counsel to Hoyer as far as roster composition because as you told us Jesse earlier in the season council was kind of not laid back but just kind of evaluating what he has I think he's surprised that he has so few weapons especially in the bullpen that to work with in in order to now be a non playoff team yeah I think you're on the right track hoodie I really do I think council is really gonna put his fingerprints on this team and and into personnel areas that maybe even you know Rossi and Madden didn't do and that's one reason Jed said he hired him because he's so good at all these different areas well Jed's probably about to hear from from Craig on some areas that Jed was you know usually the the main voice on so this will be interesting this dynamic moving forward how many coaches are gonna is Craig gonna move on from and higher on his own and you know there's all sorts of little things here I think you're on the right track when it comes to Craig council and his fingerprints on this team we haven't seen anything yet you mentioned the bullpen I was the one that reported early on that Craig was pushing hard for nearest now it didn't necessarily work out I think there was miscast and that closed a row once Alsley went down if it was yet it was Craig saying we need to spend money on our bullpen and they reluctantly did it so we'll see how that plays out this offseason even though he didn't work out so I think you're on the right track that councils fingerprints are really going to be put on this team this offseason 33 and 112 for the Chicago White Sox any Sox news before we get out of here yeah I mean I was there yesterday wrote a story and I know a lot of people jumped on this quote by Chris get's one of the dumbest quotes I've ever heard I'm gonna defend him a little bit I think he meant the cards that we've dealt ourselves that the hand that where we've been dealt to ourselves I don't think he was separating himself from it now maybe I'm wrong because the quote is the quote but I don't think he was really separating himself I just think he meant the situation we're in now we just have to make the best of it either way it's on him I mean there's no other way out of this this is on him he decided to turn over the entire pitching staff now the part that may not be completely on him is is is Vaughn and Betty Tendi and all those guys struggling yet it's his job to you know get them in the right position to succeed so ultimately it's on him I know a lot of people didn't love that quote Jesse is always we appreciate the time thanks for coming on the show okay guys have a great one see it just sober up how do you tell a accomplished member of the media Jesse yeah I am not surprised I figured we'd lose 105 110 did I think we'd lose 120 no what brother it's so insulting you were told by Jerry rhines dwarf last August oh I would think next year will be a lot better he flat out live his GM told you I I figured we'd lose 105 110 your owner said you're gonna compete no one's train wreck over there no one says that out loud nobody even if you feel that way you feel like our roster you're gonna get your head kicked in but you don't say it in front of an open mic what do you want more on I give you said look I knew get coming out of spring training we're probably gonna have a rough year as we rebuilt leave it there I figured we'd lose 105 110 but 120 no oh really horrible I know Jerry's tone deaf to all this but after hearing that fired fired fired like you can't say that in the front over my well just so you know fans we expected to lose about 110 games who says that you're trying to get busting seats in there right live they lied shadow no shot in two minutes on cap and Jhood
