He was 77. Joyce was well known around the county following retirement. He had been a part-time driver for Napa auto parts for about eight years. I spoke with manager Lisa Hunley who said he was like a "bonus dad" at work and the Napa family is heartbroken. Carlton was a good man with a good heart and would do anything for anyone who asked. He loved his mama and daddy and daughter Lulu. Joyce was a member of the Moorehead High School class of 1965 at a business degree from Rockingham Community College, served in the U.S. Navy stationed on the U.S. as independents. He was a retired firefighter and worked for the city of Eden, surviving our daughter Mitzi Purdy and Greg, brother Jimmy Joyce and Cindy and sister Robin Helms, all of Eden. Funeral services for Carlton Joyce are Friday at Fair Funeral Home at 1, with military honors by the Rockingham County Veterans Honor Guard, and tumoured at Overlook Cemetery Mausoleum. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office is hosting a 9/11 memorial ceremony this morning at 9, outside the front entrance of the law enforcement center in Reedsville, guest speaker, Rockingham County District Court Judge Chris Freeman. All members of the military will be honored. The city of Eden and Leaksville Fire Departments and Eden Rescue Squad are flying the flag in remembrance of 9/11. The fire department will also be at Eden Flea Market with their 40-by-60-foot flag suspended from a ladder truck. That's this morning, starting at 9. The Greater Eden Chamber of Commerce Foundation has received a $10,000 donation from Enbridge, a leading energy infrastructure company. It will help fund a number of projects, including educational scholarships, business development programs, and community service enhancements. News from around our state, Appalachian State University is getting a $35 million grant, the largest in the school's history. Gear up, gaining early awareness and readiness for undergraduate program, will provide college and career services to thousands of students attending 50 school districts around the state and assist families and teachers in efforts to boost high school graduation rates and post-secondary enrollment. A New York-based developer will break ground soon on a 120-acre mixed-use project in Chapel Hill, 600 condos, 100 townhouses, 100 apartments, 50,000 square feet of retail space, and an 80-acre nature preserve.
