I want to try to cheer you up if I can. Okay. Are you ready for rapid fire? Well, thank you. Let's go. Rapid fire, let's do it. Okay, we're going to start doing this a little bit differently. Then we usually. Yes, we are. So this is the exchange from Mike Denbrock's media session, Tuesday night. We've got the transcription. Vince, you are going to be the reporter asking the questions of Mike Denbrock. And I am going to play the part of Mike Denbrock answering the questions. Okay. Ready? Action. How much was Ryla Leonard's health a concern going into the year, given his history and with the offensive line being what it is? And how much he runs. There was none. None. Absolutely no risk health wise. He had an unbelievable summer, was running around like a gazelle and jumping and throwing. And so going into the season, there was absolutely no reason for concern whatsoever from an injury standpoint. So now he does have a health injury. He does. He does. You sure about that? Positive about that. Okay, so I haven't seen any reports out there. Are there a bunch of reports out there? The only ones that matter, I guess. The only ones that matter? Is that what you said? Yep. Your report? The reality is the reality. Well, I mean, we saw him get hurt at the end of the first half. Anyway, my point. I don't want to dwell on that. There's a lot of guys out there nicked up. Yeah, I'm sure there are. But my point is that you talk about trying to do what's best for him and what gives him the best chance to succeed. If he can't be the runner that we all know that he is, what are some of the things that you can do to compensate? I guess my answer to that question would be I have no indication right now that he can't be the runner. We need him to be seen. So again, that's the Q&A Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denmark last night. And the final answer there, I guess my answer to that question would be I have no indication right now that he can't be the runner. We need him to be. And also basically saying he's out there practicing. There are plenty of guys nicked up. You know, whether it's an official injury or whatever. It's football, so definitely refuting at least the severity of Riley Leonard's reported injury and he says Leonard can be part of the run game. So are you good with all that? I think it's hilarious that he was sparring with this particular reporter. I still want to know who the reporter was, by the way, I still need to have that. I officially need that information for my own good. And I understand that it wasn't as contentious as it comes off, but it felt pretty contentious to me. And when you read it, when you read it on paper, it definitely looks that way. I have yes, talk to someone who was there. He said it wasn't. I didn't, I didn't get who the person was though asking the questions. I just, I find it interesting that he's like, yeah, I know there's an injury and he's like, well, I don't. Like, that was very interesting to me, but I think that, you know, Mike Denmark is saying what I would anticipate him saying is they're going to do whatever they got to do to make sure he's successful. I mean, it's not totally shocking, I would say. I don't know. Yeah, I was more shocked by the line of questioning. I thought it was interesting, Andrew, I don't think it's the person who you're saying that it is and I'm not going to like throw a bunch of names out there. I just, I don't think that that's probably who it is. My guess is it skews a little bit younger than that. I think Vince and I both probably think that, you know, and look, I, as I've said, we know that Riley Leonard was injured to some extent. And, you know, just because he's got, you know, whatever in his non throwing shoulder doesn't mean all of a sudden he can't play, you know, like they've had him out there practicing. All week. And if he's taken the number one reps, which they're saying that he is, then they're planning on starting him out there on, on Saturday. Right on. And the other side of this is because it's Riley Leonard versus potentially Steve Angeli, two different types of quarterbacks. So even, even if he's not going to be out there playing, why would Notre Dame, what would Mike Denmark or Marcus Freeman say anything to the contrary? What you make Purdue prepare for both guys at the very least. 100% because, you know, in theory, Riley Leonard is going to play a lot different than Steve Angeli, who was I'm sure who they're going to give the start to if it's not going to be. Riley Leonard and they are almost polar opposites when it comes to who they are as a quarterback. So yeah, I wouldn't give it away either. No, absolutely. So Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock. He's kind of been Mr popular this week, no surprise. After last Saturday's upset of Notre Dame, he was on the fearless podcast with Jason Whitlock earlier this week. And he had this to say about his interaction with Marcus Freeman after Saturday's game. He was an unbelievable person. And so the way he treated me as the head coach of Notre Dame, and he embraced me as a, as a, you know, fellow peer spoke volumes about him as a man and a person. And so I reached out to him after the game and told him, hey, anything that you need from us to help you, things that we saw in the game. I've been more than willing to help you. I want to see you be successful and lead that program to great heights. Found that very interesting. And apparently, you know, again, he's done a ton of interviews. And I think he said, and at least one of the others that they've talked multiple times since then. So what do you think about that? Hemic offering to help Marcus Freeman add to the fact. - When I first heard it, I was like, woo hoo, that is, that's faulty right there. Like that, he's walking in with some canyons down. Like, I mean, I was taking a back a little bit, but then I sat back and I was just thinking about him doing these interviews and talking and stuff. Look, I don't think he meant like, I'm a better coach than you, let me help you out. Like, I don't, I think it came across a little bit. - No, I don't think he meant that either. I think he meant like, because he also, before that clip, said something, you know, like they were talking before the game and Marcus Freeman was a great guy, you know, all that. - Right, right, right, right, so. - I think he legitimately called him up to be like, hey, you know, that was a great game and it was a great atmosphere and anything we can do to help let us know kind of a thing. And I'm not saying Marcus Freeman is reaching out or anything like that, but look, coaching is a fraternity and you do bounce ideas off each other and maybe he's a really good watcher of film and can break some things down and there's some different things that he can get. Like, you can get information and get things from people, no matter what level they're coaching at. - Obviously, for them to pull off an upset like they did, there were some particular things they felt like they were going to have success at and they were able to. And Northern Illinois and Notre Dame are not going to play again. It's not like this was a home and a home and Notre Dame is going to the Cal next year. They're not going to play again. And so if you feel like you've got that kind of relationship and you don't mind sharing, because that happens all the time as well, you know, like whether it's a pitcher who's got to tell, you know, in, you know, like whether it's going to be a fastball or a curve ball. If there's someone, you know, who sees it and you don't think that it's going to, you know, adversely affect you somewhere down the line. Maybe you tell the guy, hey, look, by the way, you're tipping your curve ball when you're doing this, you know, like you're digging in too far, you're moving, you're going whatever it happened. You know, like, so if, if Hammock feels like the relationship that he had in that short amount of time with Marcus Freeman was good enough and he doesn't mind sharing a couple, you know, like, hey, we saw this. This is why we attacked you this way. This is why we thought we could do this in this way. You might be aware of that going forward. Might not be anything more than that, you know. - I mean, at the end of the day, it couldn't hurt. - That's right, that's right. - Couldn't hurt. - That's exactly right. - Prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over five million active members. For a whole new way to nug, it's gotta be Wendy's at participating U.S. Wendy's. So he also had a message for Notre Dame fans who are irate with Freeman right now. Say, you know, they got a great leader in charge. You know, I've watched his press conferences. I've studied him. He's been a tremendous coach, his whole career. He's been a tremendous player. He's obviously extremely intelligent. And so he's a leader of men. And I think just because a game doesn't go your way doesn't mean he's not the right fit. I think he's gonna do great things in Notre Dame. I'm anxious to watch him grow and develop. And, you know, hopefully he can win a national championship. - What do you think about that, Vince? - I think he's 100% correct and a lot of the things that he said and he's thrown a lot of love towards Marcus Freeman and why wouldn't he again? Coaching is a fraternity. They're rarely gonna dig on each other. It's gonna be, you know, why would he say anything negative about Marcus Freeman? He just whooped his butt. You know what I mean? Like it's, it's easy to be all nice and complimentary when you, when you're the guy who walked out with a win. I mean, let me be honest. No one wants, no one would want to talk to this guy if they had lost another one Saturday. He wouldn't be doing any of these interviews. - But I mean, good for him for snatching up the spotlight and shining it on Northern Illinois and everything else. I mean, he's decked out Northern Illinois gear and all of these, you know, press conferences that he's doing and, and, you know, hey man, take advantage. But no, I'm not, I'm not in any way surprised about what he said at all. - No, no, you know, Jeff Fair points. He says Marcus Freeman, year three at Notre Dame losing again to a Mac team picked to finish third in their conference and a four touchdown dog then taking his advice. Well, the only, the only word that I would have a problem with there is this is the first Mac team that they've lost you. But you know, I agree with most of the rest of the sentiment. Jeff says weak in his opinion, but whatever. You know, look, again, the guy's taking the high road. Obviously, observing the way Marcus Freeman has run this program in a high profile fashion. I don't think there's any one of us who disagree with the fact that it's unacceptable for Notre Dame to lose to a Mac team. I don't think there's any one. - No one said it is. - Who would disagree with that? Brian says his press conferences are awful. I mean, who's? I'm pretty sure he's talking about Marcus Freeman's because Hammock was saying that he's listened to his, you know, it's like, did you feel like they were awful a week ago at this time? Or was it the earliest awful because now he's got to answer some tough questions in the press conferences. He's not answering them the way you want to. - What do you want his press conferences to be exactly? I guess that's what I'll say. You want to come out and do a little dance for you? You want him to tell some jokes? Like Brian Kelly used to tell jokes his press conferences and it was awful. So I actually like Marcus Freeman's press conferences because he's pretty honest about everything that he says. - Yeah, yeah. Fill in the blank. One more from Hammock. It's blank that he says Jaden Harrison is Notre Dame's best player. - That kind of shocked me a little bit. Like I was giving him his praises for me, you know, potentially being a good watcher of film. And I'm not sure that that's the case after I read that. You know what I mean? Like he's not the best player on the team. He's fast, sure, but he's not the best football player. Sorry. - I wonder how much of this is like he was watching a bunch of Marshall film on this guy. - Fair. - You know, it's game two. So you're going to be watching much more of that in the off season and coming into this than Notre Dame film because there was only one Notre Dame film and there wasn't much to go on. - You look good at Marshall. - Yeah. - No doubt. - I mean, Harrison is a, you know, so like hearing him say that it's like, man, is this, is this really the best guy or like, are we, are they not, you know, like are they not using him the right way? Because we obviously haven't seen that. I mean, this was a guy who really, all we expected from him was to come in here and be a kick returner because he was a All-American kickoff returner last year. But he has found his way into that top five six in the rotation, but I mean, if that's the case, like the rest of the receivers, with the exception of Bo Collins, we just haven't seen a lot of productivity from anybody so far. - I would, I mean, he is a benefit to you on the receiving core. He's not your best receiver. That's what I'll say. - Good differentiation. - No. - So teams are allowed to use iPads during games this season on the sidelines to look at plays, you know, that just happened and that kind of stuff. Apparently they weren't working on Saturday. So neither team, Northern Illinois nor Notre Dame was allowed to use them. So Al Golden, Irish defensive coordinator, was asked about adjusting from week one to week two with no iPads. This was his response. Quote, "IPAD had nothing to do with our execution and the explosive plays. There's so many things that we needed to do better, but at the end of the day, it comes down to a certain number of plays and the two explosives, one for a touchdown. We just needed one more stop because it's not going to be perfect. And I got news for everybody. It's not going to be perfect the rest of the way. You have to find ways to win. We just needed one more play, either a takeaway to set up the offense or don't give up one of those explosives and then you have a chance. The way the game unfolded, we had to hold them to 13 to win. We failed, we didn't do it. End of story, that's it. That's defensive football. Each game unfolds differently. That's the way the game unfolded. We didn't get it done." End quote, Al Golden. What do you think, Vince? - I think he was listening to the show on Saturday night and agrees with me. That's what I think. That's exactly what I said. And I was getting lambasted for it, but he's absolutely right. He is a hundred percent right. They had an opportunity to win that game. It was in their hands and they didn't do it. It's not good enough. He's a hundred percent right. I love the fact I kind of wish Marcus Freeman would have said something along those lines when he came out in his press conference on Monday, but I love Al Golden for his frankness, man. He is a hundred percent correct on all of that. - Give me pragmatic, truthful, Al, like any day of the week, surly Al Golden, 'cause you know that he was surly about this whole thing. And he's absolutely right. Like that's what it comes down to with the defense. And we were talking about it on Monday as well. They needed to hold him to 13 to win. They didn't get it done. Now, you know, again, not to put all, you know, not pointing all the finger at the defense. The obvious, the offense needed to play better, but for the game situation with the game on the line, the defense needed to make a couple of more plays and they weren't able to. I just think it's hilarious, you know, 'cause like Andy Saylor is saying, the iPads were not the difference in the game, but having them sure would have helped. But, you know, again, like Al Golden was asked about the iPads and that's the answer that he gave. It's like, to help with the iPads, the iPads had nothing to do with it. We just had to play better defense and we didn't play better defense. - Look, and I love him for it. - Here's the reality about the iPad, Sean. Al Golden has been a coach for 30 years, plus he's been able to use iPads one game. - That's right. - One game. - That's right. He's coached a lot of games with no iPads and has a pretty good success, right? - So I don't see how it had anything to do with them losing that game, because they only had them for the Texas A&M game. They've never had them at any other point in his career as a coach, nor have any of these coaches or players had an iPad on the sideline for any of their collegiate games ever, except Texas A&M, that's it. Now, the vast majority of these guys had iPads on the sideline when they were in high school, but not in college. So the iPad thing, if anybody's trying to make that as an excuse, it is absolutely not one. - Now, and look, Jesse and I were talking about the explosives again yesterday. Ontario Brown had three explosive plays in the first half. The one was the 83-yard touchdown, and then he had two others. It was like 20, I think 28 yards and 43 yards. The 83-yarder obviously touchdown, led directly to seven points. The other two explosives led to two field goals, Northern Illinois hit in the first half. You eliminate the explosives, and Notre Dame probably wins that game like 14 to three, 14 to six. - And we're still complaining. It's still ugly, it would have something else to complain about, but like Toledo, it would feel like a loss, but it was a win, and the conversation would be a lot different today. - Correct. - Than what it is. - 1,000% agree with that. - Light it. - Hey Irish breakdown listeners, it's Urban Meyer. So subscribe to Throwbacks on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts. - The great James Earl Jones died earlier this week. Vince, his sports movie credits include Bingo Long's traveling All Stars and Motor Kings, Field of Dreams, and Sandlot, three baseball movies. Which would you say was his best? - His best was Field of Dreams. I mean, the iconic speech, you know, that they will come and all that stuff at the end. - You build it? - Yep. - You know what I mean? His speech is one of the best ever in a baseball or sports movie, you know. Oh yes Ray, they will come. You know, that's like the best ever, right? And so that's Field of Dreams in that regard. Now I have never seen the first one. I know of it, I know it exists, but I've never actually sat down and watched the traveling All Stars. I think I've seen like bits and pieces of it, you know, that kind of appeal. Sandlot, to me, is a better movie. I love Sandlot as a movie 'cause it came out when I was gay. And I just-- - You're younger, you're younger. - I just love it. As I've gotten older, Field of Dreams has gotten more meeting for me because it's a father's son kind of a thing. And as a son, it wasn't so much 'cause my dad wasn't in the sports. But as a dad, it now speaks to me a little bit more than it ever did before. So like it's growing on me. I guess that's the way to put it. But to your point, in James Earl Jones specifically, it's 100% Field of Dreams. - I've gotta go with Field of Dreams as well. I like Sandlot. Actually, like Sandlot was, you know, we would watch it in college and all that kind of stuff. And you know, it was like, he didn't obviously have a very big part in that, you know, 'cause like even beyond just the speech in Field of Dreams, which obviously everyone, you know, America is March Stone, like an army of freight trains, you know? It's like-- - Right, right. - Like even before that, when Kevin Costner goes to his apartment in Boston and he's like back to the '60s and he sprained the insecticide at him. - Well, it's fantastic. - You know, yeah, like so much good stuff. Bingo Longs is one that used to kind of come on. It might have been like the ABC movie of the week, like back in the '70s or something like that. So I remember watching it a couple of times, but you know, like it had a lot of it, like it had Richard Pryor in it. It had James Earl Jones, it had Billy D. Williams. You know, there were a lot of people in that Bingo Longs, but it never really kind of stuck as a classic sports movie, like any means, but definitely Field of Dreams, for sure, I think. You know, but just because like that speech is remembered by just about everybody who's into sports movies, it seems like. - Oh my gosh, yeah. I mean, I will say, you know, obviously Star Wars is the big one for him and for everybody. And I totally get that. But again, being of my age, I guess, like his voice as Mufasa is always gonna be in my brain. You know what I mean? Just that deep, you know, come on, Simba. You know, I mean, I just-- - And it's fun, maybe it's because I was so young, but I didn't realize for a long time that he was Darth Vader either. - Right, like it took me a while to even realize that, that he was Darth Vader. - Yeah, and it's different because it was just his voice, right? He didn't do the actual acting in it. It was just his voice or whatever, but. - Exactly. - But yeah, that's obviously what he's probably the most well-known for, but yeah. That was a sad day. - For sure. Sean Kelly threw a question in the chat earlier, and I thought I'd kind of save it for this since we had the James Earl Jones movie question anyway. He says, "Now that Top Gun 3 is a go, "what do you think the major storylines are gonna be?" - Well, I think him and Penny are just gonna be a storyline. Maybe they get married or something like that. The other storyline I've gotta think is maybe this is when he finally retires. Like maybe whatever he does kind of forces him into retirement. I just, I don't have a whole lot of high hopes for Top Gun 3, to be perfectly honest with you. But you know, Rooster will be back. You know, Hangman will be back. There's gonna be some sort of a mission that they're gonna have to complete. So I don't know, it's gonna be, there's a reason I'm not a writer, I guess. - I know, I wish I knew, but there, I mean, there's obviously gonna be some kind of tension again with Rooster and Hangman and all that kind of stuff. I will be curious to see how much Penny factors into this one, you know, like is there some drama? - You better bring them back. I'll be kicked off if they don't. Like, you know, again, like you can only go back to the well so many times. Like how do they find a way to get Tom Cruise in the cockpit once again? - See, that's what it's ultimately gonna come down to. - Right. - So that's the biggest issue that I have with number three, right? There was enough time between one and two where, you know, Iceman and Maverick were enemies, then they became like best friends and inseparable and I'm scaling them out over and over. So you've got them as friends. Well, now you have a new antagonistic relationship with the next generation, but by the end of the movie, they were friends. And so are you gonna bring in new people to be antagonistic with? Are you gonna bring back the old people? Are they gonna be friends? - Right. Like is John Ham gonna be-- - Right. - being the antagonistic in, you know, kind of along with Hangman, you know, 'cause it's basically Ham just, you know, made that face the whole movie and-- - I know, right? - Like, so I don't know. I just think that they're going to the well one too many times, as you said. - I do too, but when you make a half a billion dollars, when you make a billion dollars, that'll change some minds. - And they'll make a bunch of money on this one too. I just don't think it's gonna be as good. - Yeah. - DK, you just need to slap yourself in the face for this one saying that it was a disappointment. Come on. - DK, you're just, it's okay to be wrong. - Yeah, bad take. - Okay, bad take. Come on. - Slip one more in there, at the end. Salty says this is vint-centric. Will the two blocked field goals deserve the field goal kickers psyche and lead to misses? - Well, not if they're not lining up for 62 yarders anymore. I mean, that was ridiculous. - The other one was what, like 48-ish something like that? - I want to say it was like 50 something, wasn't it? - Was it? - I want to say it was like 50 something, wasn't it? - Was it? - I want to say it was 50 plus. Either way, it was when you're back that far and you don't have the strongest leg on the planet, you've got to hit more of a line drive. And that's what happened. I mean, that's not gonna be an issue, 50 and in. So no, I don't think it's gonna hurt his psyche. Kickers are pretty resilient. I don't say that being an issue. Kickers have very short memories, I will say that. - Yeah. - Have to, if they're gonna be successful. - I mean, ultimately, again, like a 62 yarder, you can't put that on the kicker. - No, put that right on the head coach, right here. - Yeah, you had to try to kick it low. Yeah, I mean, there's nothing, 'cause you gotta try to get some line drive on that thing if you're gonna get it in there. Yeah, so I don't think it'll get in his head either. It's not like he shanked it or anything like that. It was just blowing up at the line of scrimmage. - Right, and look, the line has to do a better job of keeping arms down, there's no doubt about that. They did a very poor job of that, but you know, no, it won't get in his psyche. - Yeah. All right, well, that is going to do it for tonight. I appreciate you being here. As always, don't forget, Marcus Freeman does his Thursday Zoom call, so I'll be curious to see what kind of things come up tomorrow and we'll have some of the most interesting things from the Thursday Zoom to start off the show tomorrow, and then we'll have we and we out tomorrow as well. And depending on what the questions are, I might even save some we and we out for the countdown to kick off show this week. I've been coming up like with some different ideas for, you know, like what angles we're going to go with the countdown to kick off show. So I might save some, just kind of depending on which direction they go. But I'm going to put that we and we out thread up tonight and you can put in your questions or new champions lounge for the we and we out show tomorrow. Vince enjoyed it as always. Have a good night. And I will talk to you tomorrow. And thanks to everybody else for being here as well. Hit that like button before you leave. And we'll talk to you Thursday on Ivy Nation Sports Talk.
