It's the middle of the week, it's Wednesday, it's also 9/11. Thanks for joining us, I'm Eric Carpenter and this is KCVL, KCRK. It's one of those days you want to just sit back and reflect a little bit, you look back historically the events of 9/11 when America was attacked, we want to just give thanks today that we still live in a free country or not that far off, we've got elections coming up in November, America continues. We go through our struggles, we've had our trying times, let's just reflect a little bit today on what went on on 9/11. Need extra support? It is the question of the week. Hi, I'm Haya Lonnie Johnson, the assistant district biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in the Callville office. We get a lot of questions from the public and one we've heard recently is, in my opinion, my experience hunting turkeys in fall is a lot more difficult than during spring season. Do you have any tips to help me get a bird this fall? The fall wild turkey season runs from September 1st through December 31st every fall. The Leclerc Creek and wrestlers Gulch Wildlife Areas in Northeast Washington are known to have a lot of turkeys, so are great places to start. Look for areas with a meadow or small opening and lots of available food. You can scout for roosting trees by listening for gobbling turkeys in the evening. The turkeys will be close by the next morning when they fly down from the roosts and you can sit with your back against the trees, stump or hillside and wait for them to come down. Try calling until you get a response. Turkeys are also abundant on private land, especially in Stevens and Ponderay counties. Many private property owners will give you permission to harvest a couple turkeys off their property if you contact them in a respectful way and introduce yourself. If you can't find a private land connection, go to wdfw's private lands hunting access web page at wdfw.wa.gov type private lands hunting into the search box in the upper right hand corner of the page for that information. For more information on general fall turkey season, also go to wdfw.wa.gov and type Turkey into the search box. If you have a question for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, send it to communications@dfw.wa.gov or call 509 563 5495. We'll answer one question per week on the air. Please include an email address or phone number because you can win a prize for asking questions. If your name is drawn, you win a can of bears for you to take with you on your outdoor adventures. It wasn't just the presidential Harris Trump debate last night. The two candidates for Washington state governor squared off in their first debate that dealt a lot with taxes, crime and abortion. Bob Ferguson and Dave Reichert squared off, talked about state spending. Reichert says he would veto any new taxes that were proposed while Ferguson explains he wants to run the state like a business and find what programs are working and identify those that weren't. Reichert accusing Ferguson of being soft on crime and that instead of supporting the hiring of more law enforcement officers, he focused on letting the number of attorneys in his office swell to 800. Well, we had the debate between the two gubernatorial candidates and we had the Harris Trump debate last night and both sides are saying they won. That one will see what develops and how the public reacts, but the only thing that I'm going to take out of that Harris Trump debate was, God, if that's the best we have for media asking questions, we are in a sad state of affairs. Quickly today, we're going to talk about, of course, I am traveling the world this year and I'm going to see as much of it as we possibly can and tell you about some of the different locales. Tomorrow, we're going to talk a little bit about northern Spain. Well, on this cruise that I am on, there are some 350 Australians and I've had a chance to meet with a lot of them, every single Australian is supporting Palestine in the Israeli war that is going on. It took me by a little bit of surprise, but we have dug a little deeper into it. We've talked about more of it and the Australians that I've talked to every last one of them doesn't feel Israel should have been given the land where they were given the land and having the Israeli country started. I haven't found an Australian yet that is in favor of the actions that Israel is taking against the terrorist Hamas group. They are unanimously against Netanyahu and thinks he should be gone and most every one of them thinks that Israel should not be where they are. That has taken me very much by surprise. Talking with the others on the cruise, there are a few that are supporting the Palestinians and the majority of the Americans that we've talked to are supporting Israel. A real split as far as U.S. politics and the presidential election. We have the Harris supporters, a lot of them from the Chicago area and also retired teachers. We have, to my surprise, probably the majority of the Californians I've talked to are very much for Donald Trump and also not happy at all with the governor of California. They are wanting changes, so perhaps we're going to be seeing changes coming in California. Texans, depends how long you've been there, if you are a recent person that's moved to Texas, you're not really a Texan. They've got a lot of liberal views. It's kind of what we have seen people moving into Washington state, people moving in to Nevada from California where the liberals bring their liberal thinking with them. There are people from Texas not 100% either way, and some of the crews may have issues. A lot of the Texans are not very pleased with crews down in Texas. He's got a tough reelection campaign going on. So if you go on a cruise, you are going to find people not only from every corner of the United States, I can tell you, last night's dinner, I was next to two people from just out of Edmonton, Alberta, a lot of Canadians on the ship. Next to them were two ladies from Northern New York. Now Northern New York is not like New York City. These were both extremely conservative New Yorkers. Next to them, a retired hospital administrator from the Sacramento, California area and another fellow from North Central, California. They both happened to be extremely conservative also. One drives an electric car, says he's happy with it, because he doesn't drive any blink at the distance. The other from California drives a hybrid. He says he's very happy with the hybrid, but he's not willing to go over to a full electric vehicle. So if you decide to go on a holiday and you opt to take a cruise, you are going to get a wide range of views from all over, not only the U.S., but we've got a lot of different nationalities represented here on this cruise. So you'll learn a lot. One other thing that I forgot to mention about Amsterdam. If you actually live in Amsterdam, you're not just visiting. Right now you cannot purchase a gas powered vehicle. It must be electric. There are a few gas powered vehicles in Amsterdam, but they have a sticker on them. With what region, outside of Amsterdam, they are in and they have a limited time that they are allowed to be within Amsterdam itself. So that's why all the taxis were Teslas and why all the canal boats are electric and you don't hear cars, you don't hear gas powered engines, everything electric up in Amsterdam. I hope you enjoy it. We're going to be talking for probably the next four or five, six days about Spain and Portugal. We'll start that tomorrow. The odds of the mariners making the playoffs, they are not looking real good. The odds makers putting the mariners at about a seven percent chance at this point of making the playoffs. Mariners dropped one last night to San Diego, final score seven to three. Mariners took the early lead. They got one run in the first inning, one run in the second inning, but San Diego came back, got three in the third inning and then went on to scoring the sixth and seventh. So solid victory for San Diego last night. Mariners take on San Diego once again. San Diego, really good record. They are 82 and 64 for the season. Mariners now 73 and 72. So just three and a half games out of the wild card, but things are getting, the lights aren't out yet. But boy, sure help if the mariners can get a victory over San Diego today.
