Dr. John Stover, Superintendent of Rockingham County Schools, and Sean Gladio, Director of Safety, have issued this statement in light of the recent high school shooting in Georgia. While it is a challenge to predict or prevent such occurrences entirely, we are committed to taking every possible measure to protect our students. Your child's safety is and always will be our top priority. Over the past two years, RCS has implemented, improved, and upgraded several safety and security components, access control and monitoring, emergency preparedness and response, on-site safety personnel, resources and weapons detection systems, safety inspections and assessments, significant well-being and a healthy school culture. Two children, ages 11 and 12, are facing charges for allegedly making threats on social media to dozens of schools around the state. The threats appear to show pictures of guns with a list of targeted schools, although none of the threats have been credible. Authorities say it's disrupting to the school system and law enforcement. I've checked no students in Rockingham County have been charged in the current school year. The North Carolina legislature has passed House Bill 10. Highlights, it requires sheriffs to cooperate with ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, public school and community college funding increase, Medicaid rebase funding, rural broadband expansion, and fully funds the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Numbers in the news, a major Greensboro developer, Curry Corporation, has broken ground on a $53 million luxury apartment complex near Holden Road and Market Street, 213 two and three bedroom apartments. The majority, four stories, one five story. Amenities include a high-end fitness center, training stations, yoga studio, car wash, indoor bar and kitchen area. In business news, a 155-year-old brand Campbell's Soup, which owns a number of other brands, Goldfish, V8, Pepperage Farms, Swanson, Prago and Snyder's Lance. It's dropping the word "soup" and will be known as the Campbell's Company. The better reflect its portfolio. Goldfish is projected to be Campbell's biggest brand by 2027. Riverfest in Eden is September 20th and 21st, over 150 vendors, lots of great food, music and more fun, like this new event, the first rubber duck drop, sponsored by Dires Plumbing, in front of Fire Station No. 1 on Henry Street, first place, $500 cash, second place, $250 cash card, third place, $100 cash, tickets, $5 each or $5 for $20, tickets are available at a number of Eden businesses.
