Today's episode of locked on dolphins is brought to you by fandal. Now through September 22, all fandal customers can bet $5 and get a three week free trial of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV visit fandal.com to get started. The dolphins will play the team from Western New York tomorrow night. And we have crossover Thursday with Joe Marino that's coming a little later this afternoon. That's actually going to run on Wednesday afternoon because it's a short week turnaround. And then tomorrow we're going to have building the game plan, the complete game plan to defeat the Buffalo bills. And then tomorrow night slash Friday, you're going to have the post game show. So it's going to be a lot of dolphins content plus you get the postcast from Greece. If you're not familiar with the postcast, postcast is a live stream that happens on YouTube locked on Sports Miami. Jim Greasehaber hosts that show and it will show up on the podcast feed. But it will be on YouTube, not on lock on dolphins, but on locked on Sports Miami. So we have a very busy, quick, short turnaround. Welcome to the NFL season, football is here, two games in five days. Best of luck Kyle, go get it. And the quick turnaround is not just hard on me and I am very much complaining about all the wrong kinds of problems because there are players, including one player who might make Daniel confirm today on Wednesday, will not play on Thursday night due to the short turnaround for the dolphins. Running back, Raheem Mostard has been confirmed out by Mike McDaniel. Now I think this has softened a little bit by the presence of Jalen Wright, who the dolphins had so many numbers in their running back room that they couldn't even get Jalen Wright dressed for game day and the season debut against Jacksonville. So with Raheem Mostard down with a chest injury that Mike McDaniel did not elect to say whether or not it would be multiple weeks, but did state it was more closely related to it being a short turnaround for Thursday than anything that would be causing him to miss extended periods of time and that dolphins having the depth, I think it makes it a luxury for them to be a little bit more calculated and take care of Raheem so that the dings and the bumps and the bruises don't add up. So Jalen Wright, expect he will be active as a result of this. The other dolphins player in question, running back is Devon H. Chan. Big piece of the formula for the dolphins. He was the third receiving option for the dolphins, offensively against Jacksonville. I believe he had as many targets as Jalen Waddle did in this football game. Mike McDaniel said during his Wednesday press availability that he would wait and see with Devon H.M. But all of the reports from dolphins practice today with the media, they had a portion that was open to the public indicated that Devon H.M. was not in a non-contact jersey was out there and stretch with his teammates. He did individual period and drills, it's not like he did the stretch and then went back inside the building and didn't partake in anything else with the team. So it sounds promising for Devon H.M. to suit up and play. And if that's the case, I think that gives Miami a very easily translatable or transitionable workload for Raheemosert into more Jeff Wilson and more Jalen Wright and keep the Devon H.M. All things equal, but same. For Buffalo, a couple of injuries of note, one of which is quarterback Josh Allen, left non-throwing hand landed on during a vaunting touchdown against Arizona in week one. Sean McDermott head coach came out and said that he's been cleared to practice and play, but it is something that it sounds like he's going to be making some concessions with. If the dolphins are smart, that's a thing that you try in those few flash instances throughout a game to capitalize on, an attack will force him to move the ball to his off-hand if he's scrambling and running. See what kind of play action fakes he's capable of execute. Josh Allen, very difficult to tackle in part because he's not afraid to use his free arm to negotiate with tacklers, would-be tacklers. Is he able to do that at a high level? Hopefully we have a chance to find out and hopefully for the win ability of the game, there are things that Josh has to do differently than what he typically does. But he's going to play. It sounds like there's a couple of key players for the Bills who are not going to play in this game, starting first and foremost with Taryn Johnson, the nickel for Buffalo has a forearm injury injured in the first quarter. It's a really critical piece for Buffalo defensively, and what Arizona is a team that had a lot of success last year running the ball was able to do to come out and be committed to run the ball and put some points on the board and have a heavyweight fight that went down to the final possession and Kyle Murray goes away from Marvin Harrison, even though he's opened down this sideline for a potential game winning score, Arizona scored 28 points. They ran for a lot of yards, and Buffalo, as you'll hear when we talk with Joe Marino, deferred back to quite a bit of nickel defense and some dime defense. And for the Dolphins, for them to have pushed the buttons that they did down the stretch against Jacksonville to find opportunities to run the ball in heavier personnel groupings, I think that's a big storyline to watch, especially with the absence of Taryn Johnson in this football game. So storylines on both sides are injury related that are notable. We get into a little bit more of that with the crossover with Joe Marino that's going to run a little later today. But I want to touch on to a tongue of a low. I want to touch on Mike McDaniel. They've both spoken to the media over the course of the last two days. And then I haven't really talked a whole lot about the Tyree Kill incident and wanted to let some time pass and get information to be able to have a properly educated opinion with facts before we get into that. So we will touch on that just at the end of today's show because I think it is something that is important for us to talk about as well. So that's coming your way as well. Make sure you stick with us. We're getting into to a tongue of a low and Mike McDaniel, some of their comments building up to this game that's next here on lockdown dolphins stick with us. The line on this game for the dolphins and the bills was an interesting one because Buffalo obviously has had the kind of head-to-head success that they have had against the dolphins and this started out with the dolphins as a slim bedding favorite. The line has actually moved in Miami's favorites, up to two and a half, minus two and a half Miami, as things currently stand over on the fanduel sports book with an over under for the game of 48 and a half points. My heart cannot take another three-point game against Buffalo, I'll be honest. The good news is I am a partially-stitious person, I'm not a super-super-stitious person, but I am somewhat-stitious. It's a joke. I know that's not how that word works. But two at Tongue of a Lo was asked about the dynamics of this recent history of these two teams and what last year means versus this year. He gave a very politically correct answer. He was asked the last question yesterday, "Is there any sour taste in your mouth from last year's regular season finale?" Two said, "Last year's last year, brother." Then he laughed at himself and said, "What a political answer. Last year's last year. Worry about this year and we'll see what we got today and we'll work its way down to Thursday and see what we can do on Thursday." He talked about this being an opportunity against a team that has had success against Miami and the narrative that is going to exist and I've said it on the show. I want to believe, and there's a lot of dynamics about this team that I think Thursday's a winnable game, but you all have to go out and do it because Buffalo has found all the ways to win all the games and that includes games that you were leading in the fourth quarter, that includes games that you looked unstoppable in the first half, that includes games where they jumped on you early and just never let off the gas, but he was also asked about Saran Neal and Jordan Poir and any potential value that they can bring, having been in that locker room and obviously the other side of that is Mike White. Two had an interesting, I guess somewhat conflicting responses to both of those things. As far as what Jordan Poir and Saran Neal can do to help two of this week, two said, they know in the back end signals what the Bills do and how they communicate things and what they've done to stop us in previous years and then just kind of the philosophy of that defense with what they try to accomplish against our offense, uniquely different than a lot of teams they would play against. So it could take a lot of the information that I've been given from those guys early in the week and apply to Thursday. So that's obviously any time a player changes teams, that's a subject of conversation, it's a subject of conversation when Mike White got added to the practice squad for the Buffalo Bills, right? And it's like, oh, cats out of the bag, right? But the bones of the Dolphins playbook have kind of scattered across the internet over the course of the past six to eight months and there's lots of play designs that you're able to get your hands on if you know the right people to ask or look to or talk to. But the point being the intricacies of how you get to those things on a week by week basis are what makes a game plan. It's not the design itself. The design itself is one thing, but it's how you build plays together and packages together that is the art of play call based on a lot of veteran players know based on the color of your knuckles as an offensive lineman, whether you're running, blocking or past blocking based on your split as a wide receiver. And if you're in a stack or a spread or an isolation, there's only so many routes based on the offense that you're in that you're capable of running like the NFL veteran players know all that kind of stuff. But it's do you know, do you properly anticipate it's a little bit less like the sign stealing scandal at Michigan where we're getting all the hand signals relayed in from the sideline and know what the plays are exactly what they are before they're going to happen. It's a little different at the NFL level and that ties into what two has said about Mike White. But just to finish the thought on on Serrano and Jordan Poir, the fact that he alludes to things that they do differently to play against us. If there's one thing that I think there there's an added value for guys like Neil and Poir who have been in a lot of game planning meetings against Miami to know what the thought process is and the why not only helps you to understand, okay, this this might be what they're doing but also to be a step ahead and say, okay, if we do this, how are they going to respond? That's pretty interesting stuff. And he alluded to that as far as Mike White, do you have to change a few things up knowing Mike White is on there the other side now to his answer was, no, and I believe as Joe Shad asked the question and asked, why don't you have to and to said, why would we have to? We don't really signal the words he's not in our huddle with us listening. They can understand the concepts we're running but we're running the concept. Are we running the concept on that play with what they're trying to do? That's the whole game. We both got to go out and play whether we know their signals or they know what they got going on and vice versa at the end of the day. We both got to go out there and we got to play. So I think the the thing about Mike White that has me a little less concerned about his potential impact is, yes, Mike White sat in on some game plan meetings last year to play Buffalo, did it twice, but Buffalo is very different than last year. We're like, we're had extended staying power in Buffalo and saw all the iterations of the two elite offenses. And Mike White was also cut loose after one year, early enough, away from game planning for this game, that I think he brings a little bit less of a philosophical nudge to the game, if you will. Now, will he kind of help with, hey, maybe here's some motions that you might see that they put in this year that were new that they didn't have last year, yeah. But does that telegraph what you're going to do with it? Not if you call the plays right. I would rather have the impact of understanding. This is what they fundamentally try to do to you and how it's different than what they do to other teams than this is a motion of what it looks like. Now, maybe I'm wrong and maybe White White. Mike White has the secret sauce and the dolphins have 140 yards of offense, can't get anything going. And the bills went in the shut up. That's the case, y'all can hop on here in the comments and say I told you so. Mike McDaniel spoke today, and he spoke about the injuries to the players. He also spoke about the mentality of this year's team. And it goes back to Miami's wearing these Miami different t-shirts and Mike had a hoodie that had Miami different on it. I appreciate it hearing Mike kind of every team every year, even me when I played at the lower levels right before I got hurt and couldn't pursue a playing career in college and all that kind of stuff. There's a slogan or a catchphrase or a theme. And for Miami, it's been things like adversity is opportunity. I wish it were hotter. You know the buzz words through the Brian Flores teams. It was the TNT that takes no talent wall where they put the big wall up at the facility and you made a mistake, you go to run and touch it and run back, all that kind of stuff. And for Mike, this year, it was Miami different. And the point being, if you want to be what we have aspirations to be as a team, it requires you to be different. It requires different kind of commitment, different kind of focus. I like this one. You know, I don't always like him. I love I wish it were hotter. Adversity is opportunity is, well, I used it on the thumbnail for the week one game. So that tells you what kind of staying power it has. But I just thought it was interesting to kind of hear Mike go into what their focus and theme as a team was this year. Now, I want to get into this, this tire kill situation and touch on it with the platform that I have. But before we do, I also want to touch on a note and nugget that Barry Jackson unearthed in his latest story for the Miami Herald. And it's the confirmed latest salary cap number for the Miami Dolphins for the 2024 season. And there's if you guys follow the cap resources in spot rack and over the cap, there's a massive $17 million, $16 million divide between the two resources on what the dolphin salary cap space is. And Barry, it seems to have solved this issue. Barry got confirmation from the NFL Players Association that the dolphins have, according to their bookkeeping, $23.6 million in cap space. It's the top 10 figure in the NFL. Remember if you don't use it, you can carry it over to the next season, which is what I would expect the dolphins do with the majority of that number now. But spot rack had it at about 24 and over the cap had it at about seven and a half. And the reason over the cap had it at about seven and a half is when tire re-kill did his contract adjustment, there was a conflict in whether or not the lump sum payment that he received was a roster bonus, which is paid in full against the cap, or a signing bonus. And if it's a signing bonus, it gets spread out across however many years are left on the contract, as is typically the case. Well, over the cap had it as a roster bonus that was $25 million lump sum, take it all in the same year, and it would have yielded the dolphins not really changing the salary cap hit for tire re-kill versus what it was before the contract adjustment at all. According to the numbers for Barry Jackson via the NFL Players Association, 23.6, that indicates that the spot rack classification of that money, which is that it was a signing bonus that is spread out across five years, was what was actually done with the lump sum that tire re-kill when he signed his contract adjustment. I just threw a whole lot of numbers at you guys, but just know this, right? I'm not a math guy, but I also apparently am a liar, because I am somewhat of a math guy, particularly with a salary cap. If you're watching on YouTube, I have my personal bookkeeping sheet around the dolphins and their salary cap. And for what it's worth, I had the dolphins at 23.511 million dollars in cap space. I know we're getting ready for a game tomorrow, so we're not going to spend too much time on salary cap space, but it was worth the update for me based on the conflicting reports between over the cap and spot rack. So I have 25.3, over the cap had seven and a half, spot rack had 24, NFL Players Association has 23.6. I also have the dolphins as things currently stand little in the red, or four and a half million dollars in the red for 2025, they'll have to sign players, but they can restructure to and get 20 million dollars in cap space. They can restructure names like, let's see, Aaron Brewer. They can restructure Austin Jackson. They can restructure Zach Sealer. They can restructure Jordan Brooks. They can do all that and get about another 20 million dollars in cap space. They could move on from Raheem Oster in the last year of his deal in Derm Smythe, and they could say about $5 million there. There's post-June 1st exit ramps on Tehran Armstead and Bradley Chubb, if you wanted to go that route, which would give you potentially there between $15 and $18, $20 million a piece post-June 1st. I say all that to say, it ain't going to be as tight as it was last year for the dolphins from a salary cap perspective early. That's why I'm glad that they did the restructure for Tyreek in the way that they did, because the carryover cap you can access right away, versus if you're going to be reliant on cutting a player post-June 1st, you have to wait for June 1st. That gridlocks you until June 2nd to actually spend the money and access the cap space that you have. So carryover cap is a more direct way to have a more immediately accessible cap space for the following year. Great kill, just some brief thoughts on this entire situation, which has consumed much of the build-up to the Thursday game, and in some ways for some of the dynamics socially in the world, understandably so. So just a few thoughts on that here as we bring this up so a lot from all the stu close, that's the next stick with us. I've been largely mum on the Tyree Kill stuff and it's stories like this in which I'm thankful that the role that I serve within this community is not breaking news, it's not cutting edge news, it's more analysis related, now we do news and we cover this team from all angles, but stories like this, it's so hard to follow on the front end and I have a great deal of respect for everybody who did so and did so with grace because for a lot of people from a lot of different backgrounds this story is an inflammatory subject for people from very different walks of life and for me to have an educated opinion I wanted to hear from Mike McDaniel, I wanted to hear from the law enforcement side of things, I wanted to hear from Tyree Kill side of things, I wanted to get what information we could get and thankfully we had body cam footage that was released, there was a police report and filing that was released and gives you a great deal more in transparency of the way what transpired with Tyree Kill on his way to the stadium for the Dolphins game one Sunday against Jacksonville that led to him being pulled physically pulled out of his car pushed face down on the concrete and handcuffed for a visual estimation of speeding and I think a lot of the powerful figures in this conversation around this team be it Mike McDaniel or be it to a tongue of a law, if all kind of alluded to I think what is the central core thought that that I think everyone should have here is that there were things that I think Tyree Kill could have done differently to not create as inflammatory of a situation but that by no means excuses the reaction of the professionals whose job it is to diffuse combustible situations and current events like this I try to do a lot of listening because I grew up in white suburbia right my experience with law enforcement is very different from a lot of different people of different walks of life now that's one of the beauties of football right is the way that it unites people of different walks of life and sometimes I think that can be taken for granted how different we can be and the different upbringings and impressions and life lessons that we've had and the beautiful game of football brings us all together for a common love and that's what I hope can come out of this regardless of where you lie on a political spectrum or wherever you lie in your life experiences I'm hoping some elements of good can come out of this and it seems like Tyree Kill and some of the leaders on this team are committed to having some conversations around that to figure something out to bring and draw good out of this but yeah it's very easy to sit here and say well you know Tyree if he would have complied with the law officer he wouldn't have been in that situation but I've seen instances of people who don't look like Tyree have different experiences while still not complying with law enforcement and that is I think why it's such an inflammatory conversation for so many people where if you put the knee jerk reaction the emotional reaction out of it I think you can actually have some productive conversations but Tyree and how he did or did not handle that situation it's not his job to diffuse a inflammatory situation one of the parties in that interaction is trained in how to de-escalate situations and what was done from the moment that car door opened to how Kaleas Campbell was treated to how John Smith was treated to how Tyree Kill was treated seems to fly in the face of just about every bit of training that comes out and the other part of this that really gets me is here on social media yesterday and everybody in their uncle is saying that Tyree was doing a hundred miles per hour plus in a construction zone well the police report comes out and it's a visual estimation of 60 miles per hour in not a construction zone they had the cones out because it was in front of the stadium for foot traffic and that there's a citation that was given to that and that is correct and Tyree has a well-documented track record of poor decisions but that does not it you have to be able to compartmentalize this interaction to get to the core issue of why so many people are upset about it and in current events like this I usually choose to listen a lot more than I say and that's why I haven't really spoken on this over the past couple of days now hearing how it's impacted Mike McDaniel hearing from Toa Tonga Valoa and the other players on this team I did want to grace it with a little bit of time here on the show that I hope I did justice by and just speak with you all with the platform that I have but do so in a way that's not recklessly irresponsible with an echo chamber on social media where somebody says something with no verifiable proof and then by the time the facts actually come out that untruth has been spread so widespread for so long that the truth doesn't matter anymore so that's my thoughts on the Tyree kill incident from sunday and there's hoping that there's good to come from it there is good content coming the rest of the week here on lock-on dolphins we already alluded to that with crossover Thursday which drops in a few hours with Joe marino and then you also have the building the game plan to beat the bills coming out tomorrow then the game will happen then we'll get the post cast from Greece on the podcast feed his show will be on a separate youtube channel and then I will have my reactions after the game as well so make sure you hit subscribe keep it locked in right here on lock-on dolphins it
