You know exactly what you want or like to take your time by your car the convenient way with carvana and I felt roster cuts across the league are underway and while we wait for the dust to settle at today's four p.m. deadline I already have a few names on the waiver wire that might be of interest to me for the dolphins. You are locked on dolphins, your daily Miami dolphins podcast part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. All right my yummy welcome to another episode of lockdown dolphins. It's your team every day here on the lockdown network. I'm your host cow crabs a lifelong Miami dolphins fan host of locked on dolphins cohost of locked on NFL scouting author of touchdown Miami and the NFL draft lead at the 30 13 all of our shows here on the locked on network you can find them on YouTube or wherever you listen to your favorite podcast to the cap to our every day's because it is your team every day here on the locked on network it is Tuesday August 27 today's episode of locked on dolphins is brought to you by fan duel now through September 22nd all fan duel customers can bet $5 and get a free three week trial of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV visit fan duel dot com slash locked on to get started. If you're watching on YouTube, you can welcome my cat Logan in as he and I and everyone or else are awaiting 4 p.m. which roster cut deadlines across the league must be trimmed to 53 players that process started a little bit over the weekend was a slow trickle yesterday and today if you're on social media your timeline is pretty much a steady state of player cuts across the league and reported a new players. And while I didn't want to do a show and leave everybody hanging when the in the initial 53 not the final 53 the initial 53 is apparent I did want to do a show and not leave you guys hanging shouting out some names that I thought were of particular interest that we know will be on the waiver wire unless something happens between now and 4 p.m. where a team hears that the team another team is going to cut a player gives him a phone call and they work out a trade. These things can happen like that and they can happen very quickly. So there's a lot of flux which is why I didn't do like regularly schedule program show release this morning but now that we know what players are starting to be available. There's at least an opportunity to look and say hey I think these guys might be nice fits for my end. Are you going to get them all? No. Maybe we get any of them probably not but as you look to create that steady turn on the bottom of your roster whether it's at quarterback with the QB three opportunities that exist out there whether that's at some other positions of need or the other side of that coin names that you see and recognize and know from two three four years ago that I don't think have anything left in the tank and I wouldn't be interested. So the dolphins themselves we've already got a number of cuts including a lot of the young wide receivers linebacker Curtis Bolton who came in early in camp and played his rear end off was announced by Barry Jackson that he'd been released from the team Barry Jackson also reporting Nebo Galamore at defensive tackle was released from the team or is being released from the team. Of course there isn't always an opportunity to get these guys back on the practice squad you got 16 spots. So we will see if those players get a chance to stay with Miami but not making the initial 53 a couple players who I thought at one point or stage of the preseason and training camp process I thought had a pretty good argument. I'd say for Galamore I thought he faded down the stretch in the preseason games and for Curtis Bolton I would say that's very much a numbers game thing his merit for making the team certainly made a strong case with his play. Now who's out there that is of interest to me there are two potential quarterbacks that I would have interest in potentially pursuing if I were the dolphins as your third quarterback it's worth acknowledging the emergency quarterback third quarterback practice squad unlimited elevations rule that was vetoed by the NFL PA that came out over the weekend I believe Omar Kelly was the first to kind of touch on that Barry Jackson confirmed they heard from the dolphins that the NFL players association did not ratify the rule change that would allow every team to carry an emergency quarterback as the third quarterback and it not counting as your practice squad elevations. So if you want to have three quarterbacks available you need to have three quarterbacks available and you do that by having them on the 53 man roster that's a little bit of a shift and I think it puts the the dolphins back in a position where they have a decision to make on if they want to carry just two in Skyler Thompson or if they want to do you want to put Mike White back on the practice squad and elevate him if you feel like you need him and figure it out in a month or roll the dice with two. I don't think there's a particularly good answer but if you're telling me a guy like Tyler Huntley might be available he has played as a backup quarterback in a team setting where there's playoff expectations Tyler Huntley backed up Lamar Jackson made it to the Pro Bowl and I'm using air quotes here despite starting just four games in 2022 at the quarterback position but dual threat type of player has the ability to extend plays has the ability to push the ball down the field you think about Skyler Thompson and his strengths I don't think this player is any worse of a potential fit within the scheme than Skyler Thompson is and it's another young player you know he came into league in 2020 he's 26 years old he's not gonna turn 27 until next February so Tyler Huntley is a player that is of some interest to me is a potential third quarterback if they want to embrace the explosive play dynamic of what they are with the athleticism that he brings to the table if they want to zag instead of zig at the backup quarterback spot the player cut that's of most interest to me at any position right now is Bailey Zappi from the New England Patriots a little bit of a victim of a scheme change I'm using air quotes here regime change it was all Bella check obviously he's no longer there they draft Drake May and they draft Joe Milton they brought in Jacoby percept this offseason he ran a college spread Bailey Zappi did he's not a very physically imposing type of player but his strengths accuracy throwing with anticipation throwing with timing were things that were hallmarks of his game at Western Kentucky so if you told me you had an opportunity to go out and get a guy on a rookie contract and claim that contract with what two years of player control left on him and he has some overlap in the things that he does well to what your starter does I'd be of interest in in bringing that into the fray as well so you got two very different kinds of players we don't know that Tyler Huntley is is for sure out but we've been told that Dorian Thompson Robinson is going to stay on the 53 for the Browns so he presumably James Winston unless they get blown away with an offer and to Sean Watson of the three quarterbacks there which would mean that Tyler Huntley would be the one that would be potentially veiled so between Bailey Zappi and Tyler Huntley names that I have some interest in as a third quarterback in the room and I would quite frankly take either one over Mike White just because of the ceiling of what those players could theoretically be respectively kind of know what Mike White is you kind of know what Skyler is I feel like either one of those two other guys you know could could Tyler Huntley be a tarot Taylor tight journeyman quarterback who answers the call is a backup for most of his career could Bailey Zappi turn into a really reliable light discount version of what your quarterback now I'd love to find out because I know Mike White's not either one of those things there are some other names either reported to be cut or reported to be scheduled to be cut and teams waiting to potentially secure trade somewhere along the way we're gonna go over some of those names that are interest to me next here on this episode of lockdown dolphin stick with us you've heard us talk a ton about fan duel America's number one sports book but we have something treat yourself to a premium sports network you earn and discover doubles see terms at discover dot com slash credit card other names of interest to me for the dolphins that are reportedly available only go wider see where I think you have a lot of options here I think you have a lot of names that you might recognize you might not recognize you might not have heard for a while free in particular with kind of different situations no a brown Houston Texans is being released Houston kind of may be flirted with trading John Metchee I'd have been interested there Noah Brown's a very different kind of player but he's really physical and he's put up 500 receiving arts and I believe each the last two seasons so he's been a modestly productive player but then Houston goes out and they secure Stefan Diggs this offseason to go with a healthy tank Dell and the emergent Nico Collins and the aforementioned Metchee it's just a bad mix for a guy who's primarily a special teams guy here's the good news he played in Houston last year it's not a one for one but there is some overlap and terminology and ideals because they run a branch with Bobby Sloey of the Shanahan coaching trip potential fit big physical guy I mean this is a guy who is six foot 220 plus pounds would love to have that dynamic in the room especially if Eric Azucama is going to continue to struggle with durability also out there Ben Scoronic if you remember this was the player that helped Sean McVay transcend all of the rules of offensive football and help push the league in a different direction because Sean McVay ran him out there at wide receiver and played 11 personnel but used him as an H back and a full back and a glorified tight end and did all those things with six foot three 225 pounds at his big time glow up in 2022 on which he caught 39 passes for 376 yards his one career two career touchdowns but he played for Sean McVay and he does a lot of dirty work I like dirty work players this offense needs dirty work players consider it of interest to me to potentially add him into the fray to go with Waddle and Hill and Beckham we'll see if Beckham's on PUP to start the season or not and burrios and craycraft on presumably IR based on a shoulder injury that will miss him that will force him to misquote unquote sometime as Zucanma would love to get a name like a Noah Brown or a Ben Scoronic into the mix for your wide receiver room if you wanted to go with a little bit more receiving production there's a player who reportedly is going to be available is available presumably for trade it's been announced that the team this team is moving on from this player it's another big body guy six foot four 210 pounds Tim Patrick Tim Patrick has missed each of the last two seasons with significant lower body injuries but in 2020 and 2021 he recorded 742 and 734 receiving arch respectively and 11 combined touchdowns can you get him first super cheap if you can that feels like the kind of move dolphins feel like they'd get surplus value with a discount because of injury questions for better or for worse that's kind of how they do their business so a number of guys with size that could be of appealing addition to your wide receiver room across the league that are available for one reason or another whether it's a numbers game for a really good room or a new regime that wants to move on from an aging player with some durability questions or in the case of Scoronic maybe just not the best fit so as you survey that room and that position feels like the most obvious area where there's going to be somebody available when you look at the rest of the needs and everybody's going to point to the offensive line everybody's going to ask about the offensive line and going out and getting somebody and finding upgrades over what you have I think that's easier said than done there have been a couple of offensive line names that have been of interest to me I don't think they're great fits or they play tackle which is redundant Josh Ball from Texas is one or from Dallas is one he was a fourth round pick in 2021 out of Marshall kind of had a troubled background uh never really stuck in the midst of Dallas they've had to kind of rejuvenate that offensive line they're they're they're scheduled potentially to start two rookies on that offensive line I think about Dennis Daly the experienced player not a great scheme fit but I feel like there's a certain floor there that that maybe you'd be comfortable with is it better than what you have I doubt it let's see let's be honest nobody's cutting a good offensive line you get something done there you're probably gonna have to manufacture and swing a trade to get somebody of real substance that you feel like is going to actually help you upgrade that that spot I have a couple of players that are on my quote-unquote no-go list I don't think they're good ideas to explore and we're going to touch on them next here on this episode locked on dolphins as we await the roster cut down deadline at 4 p.m let's come on your way next stick with us decisions decisions wait a minute are you still looking for cars on carvana yeah decisions decisions when I use carvana I found the exact car I was looking for in minutes bought it on the spot electric or full diesel decision come on you've been at it for weeks just buy it already you're right crossover it is decisions decided whether you know exactly what you want or like to take your time buy your car the convenient way with carvana names on the no-go list the first one for me is Lyle Collins it sounds like he's being released from buffalo and while Collins is a player that the dolphins and their fans have a long history with going all the way back to when Lyle Collins came through the draft process and slid all the way down in the draft on account of his status as a person of interest I believe it was a murder case and it was a lot of unknown and he slides all the way down and ends up in lands in Dallas and becomes a good player once his name was cleared and then he hit free agency and dolphins fans wanted him and then he went to Cincinnati and it didn't really work out there they moved on and now he's in buffalo and now it's there it didn't work out there and they're moving on it feels like a player who with some of the injuries that he's had it's it's probably done and gone right and to bring in a player of that player who you recognize as somebody because of the name and who he was three years ago and wanted to come in and help fix the perceived issues with this offense and I've been doing more and more research on that we'll talk a little bit later in the week about some of that kind of stuff which it found some really interesting things I just don't think it's going to help you solve anything to be honest with you now that doesn't mean that you're not going to have interest is the collective fan base on Twitter but it's not somebody that I'm overly enamored by as an option for the dolphins next on the no-go list that I have is CJ Henderson former top 10 pick at cornerback the light bulbs never really come on here at least you look at Lyle Collins and you can respect what he turned his career into as a player capable of playing guard and tackle or CJ Henderson drafted very highly out of the University of Florida does not tackle well does not show a good appetite and run support struggles in man coverage and consistency but is a name that you know because you saw him get draft in the top 10 not all that long ago I don't think he can play and the fact that Houston's corner situation is as dire as it is and he's getting cut off that roster is a bit of a flag for me so it's a no thank you for for CJ Henderson Carl Lawson's the next one and the reason why he's on the no-go list for me is because the dolphins kind of kicked around Carl Lawson and they had their issues with the Shaq Barrett retirement and kind of had an opportunity to assess the landscape he ends up going to Dallas Carl Lawson does and they lost Sam Williams for an injury for the season and he's already cutting back out it's not a good sign so while Carl Lawson is a player who played on the Jets had some production the fact that Miami had a need there early this off season after the Shaq Barrett retirement and they explored their options and landed on not Carl Lawson and then he goes somewhere else where they need edge help and he doesn't make it there either I think tells you probably everything that you need to know and then the last one that I had written down was Siaki Aika this is a former third round pick out of Baylor went to the Cleveland Browns big nose tackle he's a Danny Shelton type player lacks length he's a big body but he's a big body penetration guy he his play strengths frankly mirror that of Brandon Pealy quite a bit but Pealy I think is more athletic and Pealy's got better length so that combined for a guy who was productive formerly at LSU ends up at Baylor plays really well puts himself on the map with some some splash games but you watch him and it's like yeah he he's not a nose tackle he's a penetration player but he's built like a nose tackle it's an awkward mix and he's really struggled to kind of find his footing in the NFL so much so that as a third round pick from the 2023 NFL draft he's already not making the cut for the Browns and the Browns are a team that they've done a pretty nice job in adding some names to their defensive front but they aren't necessarily brimming with a lot of talent it's Shelby Harris, Dalvin Tomlinson, Quentin Jefferson and that's Maurice Hurst Mike Hall who's a troubled player who's in some legal issues and I believe he's going on the commissioner's exemplist it's not like this was a very brimming talent pool and a third round pick from last year theoretically should have had better footing than what Siaki I got did it's because of that he's on my notebook so that's something to what your whistle is we sit here and we wait for the 4 p.m. deadline to come and these initial rosters to get finalized and the full talent pool on the waiver claims to be available and when that comes we will react to that too but I hope you enjoyed this primer as we await all the news throughout the course of the day today stuff that isn't necessarily super time sensitive because if you try to do something news related on a day like today by the time you finish recording your three stores behind so hope we scratch the itch a little bit I will be back again very soon for more dolphins coverage as we get to the initial 53 the waivers what all that looks like so keep it locked in right here on locked on dolphins it's your
