Alright, as I mentioned in today's open, the date, September 28th, 2006. The place? Fort Worth, Texas. The location? Amengie Carter Stadium on the campus of TCU. Why is this relate to BYU and SMU today? If you remember this game in 2006, it was essentially the coming-of-age moment for the BYU football program under Bronkel Menenhall early on in his BYU tenure, and it is something I think relates directly to BYU's matchup, just 39 miles give or take a mile or two as BYU takes on SMU tonight in Highland Park, Texas, which is straight across the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex from TCU. What are you talking about, Jake? That's exactly what you're all thinking right now. Here's the deal. In 2006, John Beck led BYU into a matchup against #17 TCU at the time, and engineered a #31-17 upset win that marked the coming-of-age moment like I mentioned for the BYU football program under Bronkel Menenhall. Now, how does it relate to tonight? I feel like tonight against SMU, while the Mustangs may not be ranked, BYU goes into this matchup trying to prove itself and have a "coming-of-age moment" under Jake Retsloff's run as BYU's starting quarterback. Yes, I understand it's just Game 2 of the season. That game when BYU took on TCU was Game 5, BYU ended that game with a 2 and 2 record. Heavy underdogs, John Beck was, I think, dealing with two sprained ankles in that game, heavily taped up, and he engineered one of the big wins early on in Bronkel Menenhall's tenure. From that point, it was a launching pad for BYU to embark on what ended up being a really elite four-year run in the Mountain West Conference. But tonight's game against SMU be a similar type launching pad for BYU, Jake Retsloff, and Kalani Satake to lead themselves to a surprising season. I feel like it could. Here's the situation. BYU finds itself as a double-digit underdog, depending on where you look, our friends over at FanDuel last I saw had BYU as a 10-and-a-half point favorite. It's been as high as 13 points in different sports books, and the biggest thing is BYU is not considered going to this game and win it by any means. If you want to feel for it, I'm a bit of a sicko, as I mentioned, open at today's show. I won EA Sports College Football 25, and I ran five simulations of this game for BYU and SMU. What were the outcomes, Jake? One win for BYU, four wins for SMU. That shows that it's kind of what they're expecting it to be with these odds. The situation at hand, though, is Jake Retsloff, much like John Beck, can, I think, win over the hearts and minds of BYU fans if he can lead BYU to a victory tonight against SMU all-odd John Beck in 2006. Remember, John Beck, early on in his run at BYU, was a guy that cried in a post-game press conference and got made fun of mercilessly for doing so. Jake Retsloff had an 0-4 record last year, and I think most people are still just hung up on the fact they had a 100-yard pick six against Oklahoma, and doesn't matter what he did outside of that, including some very, very good play in that game against Oklahoma. Obviously, the following week against Oklahoma State, when they came agonizingly close to notching a win in double overtime, it doesn't matter. It is stuck in people's minds that Jake Retsloff "is not the guy." That was kind of the storyline around John Beck for a long run during his time at BYU. Remember, John Beck shed that label with one win. It really felt like the transition, the transformation of John Beck, the crybaby, to John Beck the all-timer in BYU football history happened on one night, September 28, 2006. Can September 6, 2024, be that same type of night for Jake Retsloff? I sure hope so. There is a big opportunity he's sitting here for Jake to go out there and prove himself in front of the world. This is a standalone game. It's on ESPN2. The vast majority of college football programs are going to be tuning into this game to watch because they're going to be in a hotel somewhere, whether on the road or at home, getting ready for their respective games coming up tomorrow. You have a major, I mean a major opportunity here if you're BYU football to essentially establish yourselves and say, "Hey, we know we failed last year," and I know a lot of people, speaking of if it's if I'm BYU, we know a lot of people don't believe in us. Let's step out and show what we're capable of. I look forward to this matchup. I've got an interesting gut feeling about this game. We're going to delve more into what I think BYU should do to attack SMU, my quote unquote key to the game momentarily, but could this be that John Beck coming of age moment for Jake Wretzloff, be a lot of fun if it does pan out that way because that would indicate BYU is a serious player this year in the Big 12. I'm not saying they're going to be a contender. I'm not saying they're going to go out there and blow the doors off of people, but this game, the FBI ratings on it, frankly, don't give BYU much of a chance. 21% according to ESPN's Football Percentages Index. I told you guys, I ran those numbers on five games of BYU and SMU playing, four for SMU, one for BYU. That's a 20% win total. That matches right up with the FBI here for BYU. Utah, the game at Utah that everybody thinks that BYU has zero chance into this juncture, BYU has a better chance in that game right now than they do going up against SMU. So go out there if you're BYU, play fast, play loose, take care of the football and show the world what you're made of, and hopefully, just hopefully, have that coming of age moment that Jake Retsloff could transform himself from a guy who's a bit on the outside when it comes to BYU fans to becoming a beloved figure all out John Beck in BYU Football History. Alright, what will it take for BYU to get this win over SMU? Glad you asked. I watched all of the games SMU has played this year as well as looking back at the last match of the BYU and SMU played in that New Mexico Bowl in 2022. What do I think BYU should do to win this game? We'll delve into that next. Right here on Lockdown Cougars. Today's show is about to you by our friends over at LinkedIn. It's also available on YouTube and it's a proud part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team every day. All right. BYU SMU, big matchup tonight at Gerald R. Ford Stadium. BYU comes into this one as we've already talked about and has been talked about ad nauseam as a severe underdog, double-digit underdog. There is not much expectation for BYU to go in to Ford Stadium and win this game. If BYU wants to get the win, how do they do that? Well, first things first, I went back and watched. I've watched the entirety of the Nevada SMU game twice. I've watched it in its entirety. I've rewounded. I've looked at a number of things in this game. I also rewatched a game that I was in person for watching BYU and SMU in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl. And I also looked at SMU's game against Houston Christian this past week, which is just absolutely ran roughshod over H.C.U. What does BYU need to do? SMU is a defense speaking from the offensive perspective for BYU first. SMU's defense is a 4-3 alignment, and they believe that they're going to essentially be able to do what they do in base alignment and get away with it. They want to, as I like to call it, out-athlete you. They believe they have superior athletes, and if they stick to their principles and play the type of game they believe they're capable of, they will win more often than not on defense. How does BYU attack that? Look no further than what Soljay my Ava Peters did for BYU in 2022 against SMU. I know it's two years removed. But I get all that. And funny enough, watching back, I cannot, for the life of me, understand, I can't understand why, because when you don't handle your business with regards to being a college football player, you have to do different things. But Soljay would have been an incredible running back, it feels like for BYU had things worked out. But alas, that's not the topic for today. In that game against SMU, BYU did not have much of a passing game. So what do they do? They attacked SMU with a running attack using the quarterback as the main focal point of the rushing attack. Midline read options, true read options on the perimeter, wide zone, inside zone. They used every trick in the book with their run game to confuse the SMU defense in that game. Fast forward to the Nevada game for SMU to kick off week zero. Nevada's quarterback was a dual threat, and he made life miserable for SMU with his ability to improvise with his feet. So where does that leave BYU? Jake Rutsloff absolutely will have to use his feet and obviously be able to maneuver himself in and out of jams when it comes to playing against the SMU defense. I don't know this for certain, but this would be a great time, and I mean a great time to deploy the incredibly fleet feet of Gary Bohannon in this game. If you want to bring him in for specialized packages, running the read option, called a QB power runs, whatever you've got in the playbook, use them. This feels like a perfect opportunity for BYU to deploy that in this matchup. Will it be the difference? TBD. But I feel like man for man on the perimeter, BYU has actually got quite capable wide receivers going up against the secondary from SMU, but the biggest thing you've got to do is you've got to confuse that front 7, which is a fairly veteran front 7 for SMU, and make them think that they're seeing things that they're not. How do you do that? Play action. Get the run game going early on in this game, and I think that QB run element? We had Billy Embody on earlier in the week, and he believes that Jake Rutsloff is more of a pocket passer. Great. I hope you guys believe that if it's SMU's coaching staff. Because if that's the case, Jake will be able to dart and slash and really hurt SMU with his feet. I think it's critical BYU use that QB run element to a heavy degree in this game because indications are going back as far as their matchup in 2022 that can absolutely confuse and help you win a game against SMU. Flipping over opposite for BYU on defense, you've got to stop the RPO action for SMU. It's very likely if not absolutely certain you'll see both Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings at quarterback for SMU in this game. The whole offense that Rhett Lashley likes to deploy is predicated on RPO action and stands for run pass option. On those plays, they have the option as a quarterback of handing the ball off to a running back or pulling it, throwing it, and attacking a defense via the air. BYU is got to trust their eyes. The linebackers, the safeties, even the defensive linemen to a certain degree have to understand what keys they're trying to read here because they're going to try to get confused speaking of SMU trying to confuse them. You've got to be able to look and understand what is being deployed and attack it at the right time. Yes, there are going to be times BYU will gamble on potentially shutting down the run in an RPO action and a guy pressing so many pull it and slinging it over your head for a 10 yard pickup. You'll take that every so often so long as you're winning more than you're losing in this. As a game, I believe the BYU needs to make this a one dimensional game. I would go all out on shutting down bershard smith if I'm BYU, they're fantastic running back. Speaking of the SMU Mustangs, shut him down, limit the ground attack for SMU and force Preston Stone and/or Kevin Jennings to beat you with their arm. I don't believe outside of RJ Maryland, who by the way, RJ Maryland is a seminal talent. He is going to be a high level NFL tight end, much like his father when he decides to declare for the NFL draft. He's an incredible player, but outside of him, I am not all that concerned with the talent level of SMU's receiver core. They have not proven to be the Rishi Rice. Remember, Rishi Rice was absolutely dynamite for SMU and he's still doing that in the NFL 2 this day with the Kansas City Chiefs. Well since he left and Billy Embody alluded to this, they have not had a proven wide receiver step up and sees the reins and become that go-to guy. Well RJ Maryland is that, he's a tight end, he's more of a wide tight end, kind of a slot tight end if you want to talk about it. I would bracket cover him, have a linebacker underneath, have a strong safety over the top and make life miserable for that dude and essentially tell them, okay, find somebody else to attack us in this defense. So yes, number one, shut down the run. Make sure Bershard Smith is a marked man every single time. We'll allow Kevin Jennings and Preston Stone to attack you with their feet as well in the QB run game and then just swallow up RJ Maryland and if somebody from SMU steps up and beats you in that circumstance, well guess what? You probably tip your cap to them and say, you know what? You solve the riddle and you beat it in a different way than we anticipated. I don't think it's all that difficult to defend SMU in this game but talking about it and actually doing it are two very, very different things. I'm not a guy on the field. I am what I like to call a second guess or I sit here in a studio talking about BYU sports for a living. It's a really fun thing to do but I'm not the guys making the plays out there. The guys like Tyler Batty, John Nelson, Ace Kefusi, Harrison Taggart, Jack Kelly, Tanner Wahl, Jacob Robinson, just to name a handful of guys, they're the ones that are going to make the difference here for BYU on defense. So once again, how does BYU win this game in my mind? Number one, offensively, you attack them with the QB run game. It is confused SMU going back once again to that New Mexico Bowl. Remember, I love Soul J. Maiaava Peters but there's a reason why he transitioned to running back after that one and only start he got to BYU as a quarterback because he is a running back. He was not a quarterback. He was running back playing quarterback in that game but guess what, plenty effective in BYU found a way to win that one because they confused the heck out of SMU's defense in that. Number two, attack them via the ground game using your quarterback's feet, using L.J. Martin, put this on the offensive line. I know Connor Payne, his compatriots on the offensive front would love nothing more than to go out there and run rough shot in this game. It is an offensive lineman's dream to run for 200, 250, 300 yards in a game. I think that may be a far cry for BYU to actually pull that off but tell your guys, you got to control the tempo of this game with the ground game. That's the second thing I guess, it's kind of 1A, 1B. Number two, shut down SMU's run game. Make sure Breshard Smith as I mentioned is a marked man. You find him on every play, you hit him more often than he would like to be hit and you make life miserable for him and force SMU to become one dimensional. And then number three, find RJ Maryland just like Breshard Smith, make him a marked man and take him out of the passing game. Do not try and cover him one on one. I'm telling you, he is a cheat code when it's one on one. I've watched enough tape to see that this is a kid who could absolutely torch you. Then the final thing is, play fearless. SMU's got a nine game home winning streak. I have, if I'm not mistaken, it was the number 53 plus points in those nine games that they have won at home there at Ford Stadium. You're going in as an underdog. Go in there, play fast, play loose, but also, I guess the final part I'll make here, is play disciplined. That's Nevada. SMU got in their own head more often than not and made some just absolutely boneheaded. I mean, boneheaded mistakes. Slap another guys on helmets from the opposing team. Getting personal fouls and unsports my conduct penalties in very inopportune times. BYU's got to control their emotions in this game. Go in there. If SMU wants to play head games, let them play their own head games. Don't get sucked up into it and handle your business and I feel like BYU's got a pretty decent opportunity to go out there and not your victory and go to 2-0 on the season. Once again, like I said, it's much easier said than done, but that's my game plan. We'll see if BYU, Jake Redslough, Kline Satake, and the rest of the BYU brain trust can pull this off as they take on SMU at five o'clock mountain time tonight on ESPN 2. All right. We'll wrap up today's show with a look at the first official weekend of NFL football. Where are former cougars lining up in the pros? Well, you saw three of them last night. We had a game last night, congratulations to Andy Reed, the former BYU Cougar himself. As the Kansas City Chiefs started their season, want to know, with a victory over the Baltimore Ravens, obviously Kingsley Suomata Ia got the start of left tackle. It's incredible to consider where he is at today, but congratulations to him. It's really cool to see his rise as a rookie. Game one, starting left tackle in the NFL. Absolutely incredible stuff. I don't think anybody out there doubts that Kingsley has got all the talent in the world to be a really, really solid player for the Chiefs and the NFL for quite some time and it was really cool to see him do his thing. Obviously, Andy Reed, hoping to work on a three-peat, an unprecedented three-peat in the NFL. Well, they're off to a 1-0 start. But tonight, you will see the Philadelphia Eagles down there in Brazil looking forward to that one. But it's a big weekend for BYU players because there are 20, count them 20 players in the NFL from BYU. I know a lot of Utah fans like to stick BYU's nose in the dirt and say, "Oh, we got all these guys in the NFL. Where are your guys?" Here's the deal, everybody. Utah's got 27 guys on NFL rosters this year. BYU has got 20. The narrative that BYU doesn't put people in the NFL, that can be put to bed. Any time now, it probably should already. Because you got guys like Tyler Algier with the Atlanta Falcons, Zane Anderson with the Green Bay Packers. I'm just running the list here. Christopher Brooks on the practice squad for the Green Bay Packers. Brady Christensen, who's been a mainstay for the Carolina Panthers over the past three or four years. Michael Davis switching coast this year, going from the Los Angeles Chargers to the Washington commanders. Blake Freeland, starting tackle for the Indianapolis Colts, Jaren Hull, just signed with the Seattle Seahawks. You play a stupid game speaking in the Minnesota Vikings. You win stupid prizes. That means you lose a guy like Jaren Hull. The fact that the Vikings picked Brett Ripon over Jaren Hull as their third quarterback. Yeah, you deserve what's coming to you, Minnesota. As a 49ers fan, I can't stand the Seattle Seahawks, but it is an incredible opportunity for Jaren Hull. He is in a better spot I feel like to succeed with Seattle than he was in Minnesota and congratulations on him. I know that he's on the practice squad in Seattle for the time being, but I see him getting elevated to the active roster very quickly. Congratulations are in order to take some Hill to do everything player. They listen as a tied in, but he's just a football player in FP. If you ask me, name is the team captain for the New Orleans Saints. What an incredible story. Taysom has become in the NFL. Pukanakua, who can forget what he did as a rookie last year, setting the NFL on fire. What does he have for an encore this year as a sophomore? It feels like he is poised to do some really, really big things and I'm looking forward to it. Ryan Rico, the starting game one punter for the Cincinnati Bengals. Incredible story for him, obviously is an undrafted free agent having to latch on and proving himself. I know some injuries played a role in that, but the simple fact of the matter is he's the number one punter for the Bengals for the time being. We already talked about Andy Reid as the head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is an all-timer and if he continues to win Super Bowl titles, well, it's pretty quickly to become is Andy Reid the goat when it comes to coaches. I know Bill Belichick has considered to be that, but Andy Reid can make a run at that and he's got the team to do that. Keaton Slovis on the practice squad with Houston Texans. Think about it. The last three starting quarterbacks for BYU, speaking of Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall and now Keaton Slovis, have all been in the NFL and are still in the NFL. Talking about Zach, now with the Denver Broncos, he's probably going to be elevated to the number two spot at some point behind Bowniks and if Bowniks falters at all, Zach may get his shot to play for Sean Paton, but really cool to see him doing his thing. Sione Taki-Taki is now with the New England Patriots. He's on the pup list right now, so obviously we're wishing him luck as he works his way back from injury, but cool to see him hanging on in the NFL. Kyros Tonga, now with the Arizona Cardinals. Remember, he was taken kind of cast aside and then rehabilitated his image as a runstopper with the Minnesota Vikings. Well, now he's doing it down in the desert. Max Thule on the practice squad for the Houston Texans. It's crazy to see him not make the active roster, but it feels like it's just a matter of time. Kyle Van Noy on the losing side of things last night against the Kansas City Chiefs for the Baltimore Ravens. It's Kyle going into year 11 this year. It's crazy to consider how far KVN has come and the fact that he's still doing his thing. Of course, I got all the love for Fred Warner in the entire world. I'm a 49ers fan, as I said, still doing his thing for the San Francisco 49ers. I'm praying knock on wood that Niners win the Super Bowl title this year for me, but cool to see Fred get his shot and then Jamal Williams, teaming up with Taysom Hill down there in New Orleans. I just listed 20 names of guys from BYU who are repping in the NFL today. It is incredible to consider how many of these guys have had impacts on the BYU football program, but it's also cool to see them making their mark in the NFL. I would say that the impact of BYU's 20 guys out does the 27 that Utah has and that's not some rivalry smack, just look at what each of these guys mean for their respective teams. It feels like across the board. It's really, really cool to see what BYU is doing and it feels like there's going to be more opportunities for guys in the near future. I feel like next year, Connor Pay, Tyler Batty in particular, should latch on in the NFL somewhere. Could you also see a guy like Kayla B. Tien make good on BYU's run-of-left tackles being drafted? Sure feels that way after game one because he's top 10 in the country right now in PFF Great Hinks after week one. There's a lot of good things going for BYU and the nice part is they're well represented at the national football league level and hopefully that will continue well on into the future. I think it's a really, really kind of just overplayed misnomer that BYU isn't an NFL factory. No, they are a bonafide NFL factory. If you're good enough, you can go to the NFL from BYU. I know there was a run with Bronco Mendenhall that's kind of hung over the program since Kalani took over that they can't get guys to the pros, it's not true. They can absolutely get guys into the NFL. They actually put impact guys into the national football league as well. It's really cool to see that and congratulations are in order to all these former Cougars. I hope you guys have fantastic seasons. Stay healthy and go out there and make all of us proud on the professional level. Other notes real quick from the weekend. I guess earlier this week and going into this weekend, number 14 BYU women's volleyball will be Lipscomb in four sets last night, congratulations to them on that. Also BYU women's soccer got back into the wind column after back-to-back losses, slotting two goals past Boise State at Southfield. They will be taking on Arkansas, number six Arkansas Saturday evening down at Razorback Field in Fayetteville, so best of luck to them as they head to SEC country and hopefully they can surprise everybody and get another big win there. Then also BYU women's volleyball tomorrow night speaking of Saturday night. They will take on number 19 Georgia Tech as part of that BYU Nike Invitational, like I said, beat Lipscomb in four sets to start that off. It will take on Georgia Tech tomorrow night in a top 20 showdown, so if you don't have plans, get down to the Smith Field House and watch BYU in action this weekend. It should be a really, really fun time and obviously it's a big, big opportunity across the board just to support BYU sports. School is back in session. All of your sports are coming online. Women's soccer's been going for a minute now. Women's volleyball. Football obviously goes into that matchup tonight against SMU. Soon enough, cross country is going to be starting. Men's and women's golf at their fall season. It's go time everybody and it's really, really fun. It's a fun time of year. I love covering BYU and I love doing what I do here on the podcast. All right. You stuck around this long. Well, you probably won't want to prediction for BYU and SMU. I've gone back and forth all week long and I will just say this. If you're in the betting world, take the points. I think BYU covers whatever the spread is, whether it's 10, 11, 12, even drops maybe to down to 9 or 8. I'd still take the points. I think it's going to be a very, very close matchup in this game and I, you know what? Screw it. Give me the Cougars, 28, 27 BYU goes to 2 and 0 as they take down the SMU Mustangs and now turns their attention to the Wyoming Cowboys. We'll do a postcast, break it down. Whatever happens, win or loss, obviously shortly after the game goes final. If you want to tune into my pre and post game coverage, check us out on the KSL Sports Zone. With that, the Cougar pre and post game show, with Alex Curia of Plenty of Coverage in the lead up to the game. But once again, a 5 o'clock kick off between BYU and SMU and I for one cannot wait.
