Aaron Rodgers is back, making his highly anticipated debut with the New York Jets after last season's injury. Can the San Francisco 49ers' defense, potentially missing Talanoa Hufanga, limit Rodgers' explosive plays?

We break down the Jets' offensive strategy, the impact of Haason Reddick's holdout on their defensive line, and the 49ers' offensive holdouts like Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams. Tackling concerns for the Jets and the importance of protecting Rodgers are also on the table. Special teams could be the game-changer in this potential Super Bowl preview.

Let's start with the jets. We're going to start with the away team. What is the biggest storyline offensively in defense? We'll start offense. What's the big storyline on offense with the New York Jets coming into a brand new 2024 season? Well, it's great to be with you guys and I'm very excited for the start of the season. The last time these teams played out in San Francisco, it was 2016. It was a season where both teams were pretty bad. It was, I think it blew Bryce Petty's only win as a starting quarterback for the New York Jets. Fortunately, the Jets have a better quarterback starting this game, Aaron Rodgers. I think clearly the biggest storyline for the Jets on offense is the return of Aaron Rodgers. Once again, the Jets play Monday night football week one. Once again, it's a marquee match up against the team with Super Bowl ambitions. The Jets were in the spot last year. They were playing the division rival, Buffalo Bills, a ton of excitement leading into that game. And fourth place into it, the Jets season was pretty much over because Aaron Rodgers went down with the Achilles injury and the Jets actually won that game. It was a thriller. They got off to a decent start last year without Rodgers. They started four in three, but even at the time you could tell that what they were doing was not really sustainable. Their offense was really struggling with Zach Wilson at quarterback. So I think it might be the obvious choice, but the big storyline around the Jets is Aaron Rodgers returning to the lineup and hopefully playing his first full game for the Jets because he only made it through, hopefully Aaron Rodgers playing his first full series with the Jets because he went and plays into last season. No, John, I think a lot of the attention is turned to Aaron Rodgers, how he's going to be recovering from his injury, obviously getting a little bit older. Garrett Wilson, a lot of people expecting a lot of him, but what has that connection looked like so far between Aaron Rodgers and a new addition to the receiver group, Mike Williams? Well, Williams has been broader along slowly in training camp. So Williams is coming off a torn ACL. So Williams only just started doing team drills last week, and Robert Salah also said heading into this game that Williams will play, but he also tried to downplay expectations. Now, does that mean Williams will be on a pitch count, perhaps? I don't know how much they're going to get out of Williams in the early going. I think that this is going to be the type of thing that builds over the course of the season. I don't think the chemistry may not be there right away. And I think the signing of Williams, even at the time the Jets made it, it was more about getting ready for that playoff push. I think that the Jets are more focused on Williams in November, December than they are right now. So, you know, I love it if Williams went out there and had a big week one, but even the Jets are down kind of downplaying expectations for this game. Look, he'll be in there, you know, in the red zone where, you know, the space is very limited. You know, he's a big target. He's a guy who can win contested catches, he'll be in in those situations. But I don't, I think it's still going to be a work in progress because, you know, the Jets didn't play their starters in preseason at all. But even talking about training camp practices, Williams had very limited reps with Rogers. So I think, you know, they think they're still at the beginning of developing their chemistry. Well, I hope I did the right thing by drafting Garrett Wilson in all my fantasy leagues, John, because I think he's a superstar in the making can go to a level we haven't even seen yet. And obviously a big part of that is Aaron Rogers. You mentioned not really seeing a lot of these guys is there any indication what Aaron Rogers is in 2024? You know, by all accounts, he looked good in training camp, training camps, training camp. And you know, I always have a little bit of skepticism toward camp camp results, because you know, the quarterbacks wearing the non-contact jersey. And you get the, you know, I always, you know, you always hear from guys who played that after you suffer a big injury, getting up from that first hits a big deal, just kind of like a mental hurdle. A lot of guys who have played have said that. Rogers said this was a grueling of a camp as he's, as he's been in some time. He said that, and Rogers, you get the feeling that Jets kind of gave Rogers the choice whether he wanted to play in preseason. He said he didn't feel, feel like he needed it. He felt like the camp prepared him as well as he's been prepared in any training camp in recent memories. So, you know, my guess would be that because he's coming off of the Achilles injury, because he's 40 years old, the days of Rogers being, you know, a guy out of mobility might be over. I mean, I'm sure he'll still make plays outside the pocket. He's probably going to make less plays outside the pocket than he has in the past. And I think the big thing for the Jets is they rebuilt their offensive line this offseason. I think Rogers is going to be more confined to the pocket than he has at any point in his career. But I think if the Jets can keep him upright, he'll, you know, he's as still smart as he's ever been. He's still, his arm's still pretty good. You know, it may not be 100% of what it used to be, but it might be 90, 95% of what it used to be. I mean, I still think there's every reason to believe Rogers can be a very effective quarterback this year. More on the path to victory at the end of this episode, this crossover episode, 49ers Jets. What is the biggest storyline on the defensive side of the ball from the New York Jets coming into week one, John, and is this the best secondary the Jets have put together since young Eric Crocker intercepted Gino Smith about a decade ago in Jets training camp? I think it might be, you know, they're outside of that situation. You know, the Jets have had some years where their secondary has been a bit of an issue. But I think, you know, right now, the Jets have the top corner trio in the league when sauce, Garvin, DJ Reid, and Michael Carter II. But if you want to talk the top story on defense, it's actually a guy who's not there right now. It's a son, Reddit who's holding out. It's one of the more interesting scenarios you'll ever see where the Jets trade for a guy. And the guy immediately holds out because normally when you trade for a guy, you have the contract situation settled one way or another and clearly there was some sort of miscommunication between the Jets and his own Reddit representation because the Jets seem to be under the impression that Reddit was willing to play without a new contract, you know, otherwise, whether they have traded for him. This is not inconsequential. Robert Salah said the other day that he views Reddit's return is if you get anything from him, it's like finding spare change in the couch, which is really interesting to say about one of your marquee additions during the off season. But wow. The Jets led a couple of very productive defense events leave this off season. Bryce Huff, who coming off at 10 sacks, Bryce have had 10 sacks. He played less than half the snaps that year, very, very productive pass rusher. They also traded John Franklin Myers to Denver, who has been, John Franklin Myers has been really important player for the Jets defense because he's a 290 pound guy who plays defense event in a four man alignment up front. So he helps them with their run defense because he's so big, but he also is very good at collapsing the pocket, had over 50 pressures last year. The Jets claims that they had to do it for cap purposes. I'm skeptical of that argument, but the Jets say that because they traded for Hassan Redic in order to fit it under the cap, they had to trade John Franklin Myers. So it's not the way the Jets portrayed it. Jets portrayed is anything they get from Redic as a bonus. There's a lot of production that went out the door that they were counting on Redic to replace and surpass. And I think there's a question now, whether they're going to get out of this pass rush with Redic not there. They still have Quinn and Williams, who, you know, you're removed from a first team all pro-birth and had an excellent season last year, you know, had a pro bowl caliber season a year ago. They have Jermaine Johnson, who made his first pro bowl last year at the defensive emphasis. It's not, you know, it's not a bad defensive line, but without Redic, it's not the elite level defensive line the Jets are looking for it to be. And I think the question is how, how well will it get to the quarterback and how well, you know, the Jets pass rush in this game could one way or another determine how this Redic situation plays out. Because if Brock Purdy has a big game and the Jets have trouble getting to the quarterback, maybe the Jets revisit this thing and maybe Redic's value goes up. And if the Jets defense plays well without him, maybe, you know, maybe Redic CC doesn't have a lot of leverage. Maybe Redic shows up. Hey, and 49ers fans are okay with Hassan Redic sitting this one out because he's the guy that knocked Brock Purdy out of that NFC championship game. Not that long ago. Next, we're going to talk 49ers biggest storylines on offense and defense. And then the must do's for the Jets and 49ers to win in week one. All right, Croc, I'm going to put it to you. What would you say is the big storyline on offense coming into week one for the San Francisco 49ers? I think one of the biggest things for the 49ers offensively is probably not turning over the ball. The 49ers are a well-built team. They've done well on both sides of this. The ball really kind of getting things going. The 49ers defense, I thought played very well during training camp. A little up and down during preseason games, but obviously you don't have all the starters out there. But I think offensively, a big thing point of emphasis really for both teams, but specifically the 49ers is you can't beat yourself. You can't beat yourself. I mean, turning the ball over. So the 49ers definitely have to make sure they do a really good job of not doing things that's going to help the New York Giants while traveling across the country, being on the road. I am wondering, because the big storyline for the 49ers all off season long was the hold outs and the hold ins, right? But those are, those are done. But even though they're done, will we see the effects of those hold outs and hold ins? So Brian and I you, will he be limited? How many snaps will he get out there? He's probably going to draw a lot of coverage from sauce gardener. Is this going to be a Deebo Samuel game potentially because of that? And I would ask you, John, how's the, how are the Jets tackling? Well, I think that's going to be one of the interesting issues for, for, for this game because the Jets did not play their starters in the preseason. And one of the things that, as I mentioned, Aaron Rodgers alluded to this, some of the other guys on the team have said that this is one of the most grueling, creating camps they've had, but as we know, you know, training camp these days, there's not a lot of hitting going on you, even when the guys are wearing pads, it's not the same thing. And that's one of the, that's one of the open questions that that we don't know because we haven't seen, we haven't seen these guys prepare. I think one thing that's going to be interesting for me, I think you, you kind of alluded to it, Brian, because it's only I've been wondering about Hassan Redick is, you know, when you talk about the hold outs and the hold ins, you know, how will these guys, how prepared are these guys to play week one. And I, you know, I think, you know, look, when you're talking about the caliber of players, the 49ers have, you know, you expect them to play well, but sometimes one of the things you see in the preseason, even among guys who, you know, participate, you know, even the guys who are practicing is something to get to like the third, fourth quarter. And maybe a guy's showing some signs of fatigue, maybe he's cranking up, cramping up. So that's one of the things I'm interested in is to see how these guys who, who sat out that there's a couple high profile guys with the 49ers who will play on, you know, I'm like, it's looking like Hassan Redick, you know, how they'll hold up over the course of the full game. Yeah. And for someone like Brandon and I, you, you can rotate him in and out of the game, but you don't really rotate offensive tackles in and out of the game. So Trent Williams, look, he's a Hall of Fame player, but he's 36 years old. He hasn't hit anybody yet for months since the Super Bowl. And so I'm not worried about his first snap. He's going to be a good football player. I'm worried about those snaps in the fourth quarter, you know, is he going to be gassed at that point? Because I would be shocked actually if he's in mid season form by getting in three practices before the season starts. So that's definitely something to monitor for the 49ers on the offensive side of the ball. Biggest storyline on defense, I don't know, I'd say is maybe who Fanga is who Fanga going to play for the 49ers? If not, you're going to have a pretty young pair of safeties. You got last year's rookie going into year two for Jair Brown, I think the 49ers like him. I think he's a smart player. He's not unlike I don't know who Fanga with how he plays and his strengths and weaknesses. And then you've got on the other side, you're going to go with fourth round rookie Malek Mustafa, who's been awesome in camp and everyone seems to love around the building. And he looked phenomenal in preseason games as well. You have special teams, demon, George Odom, maybe as the guy that gets the start. So, and you know, that middle of the field area, could Aaron Rodgers, is that somewhere where he could take advantage and maybe hit Garrett Wilson for some big plays potentially if you don't have someone like who Fanga or who Fanga's not in mid-season form. That would probably be where I would go to is the biggest, I mean, there's some depth issues too. Like, you know, it's a new season. There's a lot of feeling out and like what exactly is this team? The 49ers have two new starters on the defensive line. I like Malik Collins, Croc. You like Leonard Floyd, right? The depth. Love what we saw and limited snaps in the preseason of Leonard Floyd. Yeah. He's got me. He's coming back. He's right. He's going to be 100%. We know he's going to be playing in his game. He got banged up in the preseason game. Well, you know, you guys mentioned earlier that has son radix, the guy that injured Brock Purdy in the NFC Championship game two years ago, Leonard Floyd is a member of the Buffalo Bills. Was it on the hit where Aaron Rodgers got hurt last year? So that's one of the interesting slides of this game. That's yeah. I didn't think about that one. And yeah. So one up for the 49ers that have an extra bullet to throw out there against the New York Jets in this one. And obviously that's somebody. I said this a couple of weeks ago, John, I was like, look, with son radic and Trent Williams holding out. Hassan Reddit can't come back if you don't have Trent Williams. Look, if they will want to sit out week one, okay, if they both want to come back, okay, but you don't get his son ready without Trent Williams. And now it's completely flipped. And I'm sure you're feeling the same way. Hey, they got Trent Williams back. We got to get our edge guy back. Yeah, absolutely. You know, I actually had a line that I was getting ready for this show and they were both holding out. I was going to say that the best matchup is the holdouts, you know, the somatic versus Trent Williams. But obviously with Trent Williams, that's a big deal. I mean, he's one of the greatest tackles of his generation and, you know, has the line. We're going to find out a lot about this Jets pass rush. As I mentioned it earlier, I think this is really fascinating because this game could actually have real implications on how the Hassan Revic situation plays out. The Jets have, and the guy you really keep your eye on is Will McDonald. He was the first round pick out of Iowa state last year. To say it was a shocking pick would be an understatement because everybody thought the Jets were picking an offensive player, either a tackle or a wide receiver a year ago. And I did not mention one McDonald once I'm locked on Jets and the lead up to the draft. And I felt like, I wondered, like, did I make a mistake? But then I actually searched on Twitter for Will McDonald's Jets and there were literally no tweets about it before the NFL draft. McDonald kind of had a red shirt year last year. He had a pretty good preseason. You know, he registered a couple quarterback hits. He flashed a good spin move. But you know, he's a guy who gets drafted to me was a bit of a project. They're going to be counting on him now. They were going to be counting on him anyway. But now, especially with Reddit Academy, he's the guy whose snap total is going to go out. He's the guy the Jets are going to be counting on to produce. And you know, it's going to be no easy task when he goes up against Trent Williams. He was a really interesting prospect because that Iowa state defense was like sort of like a three man front but had completely undersized what you'd think of as like stand up outside pass rushers playing like five techniques interior. So he didn't really develop those outside pass rush moves because he's playing like an interior role, but he has the outside, you know, edge prototype as far as height weight speed. And so it might have been an extra layer of development for him as a young player. I think that was the biggest challenge that he the role he played in college is exactly what you said is essentially he was playing like like a three four defensive end role. And his role in the NFL is going to be much more. I mean, he's I don't want to say undersized, but he's on the smaller end for defensive and he's only weighs about 240 the Jets heading into the off season. The Jets talked about him bulking up to maybe 250 255, but he came to camp around the same set Robert Salas said he's the same about the same size he was last year. So he's always going to be a guy kind of a guy who just comes off the edge. And I think that's one of the challenges just he enters the NFL and nominally he's a defensive end in both spots. But the things he's asked to do are so different from what he did in college that it was always going to take some time. All right, guys, next, what do these teams have to do must do for the Jets and the 49ers to be victorious in week one today's crossover episode is brought to you in part by LinkedIn jobs when you're hiring for your small business. Lockdown crossover episode 49ers and jets brought to you by prize picks. Guys this is it. What what has to happen for the Jets to win? What has to happen for the 49ers to win? We've got three keys here. Three must do's. John we're going to the away team first. What are the three must do's for the Jets to win against the 49ers Monday? My number one is something we actually talked about a little earlier on the show. Jets need to tackle effectively. You could probably say that about every team in every game but I think there are a couple of components here that make it especially important for the Jets. First of all you look at the caliber of playmaker the 49ers have on offense. They have a bunch of guys who are tough to bring down. Guys who can make plays with the ball in their hands and you have that element where the Jets have an excellent defense. This is going to be a top five defense if everybody stays healthy but these guys did not get preseason reps and you always wonder week one you see it across the league. It's not you know not just a Jets thing you see it across the league that sometimes teams sometimes teams struggle because their guys haven't really practiced tackling yet so that for me that's number one. Number two protect Aaron Rodgers. You know 49ers have a lot of good pieces on the defensive side of the ball especially past Russia as we talked about. They have a guy that actually you know put the hit on Aaron Rodgers that injured him last year. Jets have an offensive line that looks good on paper but it's a new offensive line. You know sometimes it takes some chemistry for the pieces to come together. Jets have three new starters up front this year. In fact they have four new starters from week one last year. Joe Titman in his second year he was the second round pick last year did not was not a start at the beginning last year took over the starting role during the season. Rodgers as I mentioned I think especially in the early part of the season he's probably not going to be as mobile as he's been in the past. I think if the Jets protect him they can exploit you know especially you know some of the potential issues the 49ers may have at the safety position. Jets actually have a quarterback who can exploit issues for once which is a refreshing change of pace for this team because Jets have struggled at the quarterback position quite a bit and the third thing I'm going to say is and part of this is because it's in my memory from week one last year but when the special teams battle these are two very talented teams and I think sometimes we forget about the third phase of the game the impact that can make a year ago as I mentioned Jets were playing Monday Night Football week one against the against the top flight opponent the Buffalo Bills they won that game on a punt return touchdown in overtime by Xavier Gibson so I think you know especially when you have two teams that at least on paper look evenly matched sometimes specialty a big play on special teams are two can swing the game. You know it's a good point the special teams because we still don't know how teams are going to employ once things really matter in the regular season the new kickoff rules so that makes things nothing week one. Do you have a good idea of what the Jets are going to do? Well so one of the things that's interesting is Robert Salas said that he likes the fact that they're playing Monday Night because they're going to be able to watch the Sunday games and see how teams address it so I don't think the Jets know what they're doing I think the Jets are going to get to be figured this out Monday morning. I mean there's a lot of great matchups in this and and none more so than the coaches right the the former defensive coordinator for Kyle Shanahan is the head coach of the New York Jets and these teams operate very similarly they have similar schemes on offense and defense they are both teams that want to run the ball have a dynamic dual threat running backs they have two of the best defenses in the NFL and Croc they both have future Hall of Fame quarterbacks so that's uh that's really interesting that these two teams are matched up on on Monday night football but for real there's a Hall of Fame quarterback on one side and and we'll we'll see about Brock your party's future don't want to put too much on the young man to see um get after Aaron Rodgers right don't make life easy because he's not the type of guy who's going to turn the ball over a lot you mentioned turnovers already and it's one of our keys here for the San Francisco 49ers that goes for both sides you don't want to turn the ball over but you want to force potentially maybe a rusty Aaron Rodgers into mistakes but he's not really a guy that makes a lot of mistakes so do you do you want to chase him around Croc do you want to make him move on his bad wheel or do you want to keep him in the pocket and pressure him from there and try to get him in some third and longs well I think John you know he talked about how Aaron Rodgers at this point his career may not want to move around the whole lot if I'm the 49ers I still kind of want him to play from the pocket because when Aaron Rodgers does get on the move if he's still capable of doing that those are when the back breaking plays from him happen and they just cause teams to get you know really frustrated I know how it is to be out there third and six you feel like you have everything locked up locked down then the quarterback either takes off or gets out on the move extends the play and picks up a first down with either his legs or dumping off to someone in his face so that's extremely difficult it would be even more difficult for a 49ers team likes to play a lot of off man coverage uh other 49ers going to squeeze these windows to make uh Aaron Rodgers maybe take a little bit longer to diagnose what's going on and and eventually throw the ball uh those are things that I'll be looking for but I think making him play from the pocket maybe gives a 49ers a little bit better of a chance because it's like all right play from the pocket does he start to get a little finicky do you get a few hits on them what does that end up looking like it's always going to be tough against a guy like Aaron Rodgers because he's seen everything he's seen every look that you could throw at him but I think for the 49ers that's one of the main things that they have to do and that leads into our other must-do crock which was limit explosive plays right and uh the the number one thing for limiting explosive plays is getting to the quarterback quickly well you have Garrett Wilson out there I mean this is a tremendous young receiver he's really good at stretching the field being able to make plays at every single level they got Mike Williams in there we'll see you know John talked about them bringing Mike Williams along a little bit slower but one thing that Mike Williams can do even if he's in there for 10 plays in 10 other plays they have him going deep he is a tremendous contested catch guy vertically down the field that's something that you have to keep an eye on especially with the 49ers you don't have a lot of big guys you know you do have Traveri's Ward he has decent length but when you look at the other guy right down the door tremendous received uh uh defensive back tremendous corner all right but if he's on the outside matched up with six three six four Mike Williams I think the advantage might kind of go to Mike Williams when in a jump ball uh situation and Aaron Rodgers we talked about maybe lack of being able to move or make a whole lot of plays in the move one thing he doesn't lack is ball placement I mean this guy when he throws the ball I feel like he puts it wherever he is trying to put it and not all quarterback to say that I think Aaron Rodgers is probably one of the best in the history of the NFL at doing just that so he'll make it tough especially if you have those big guys out there you have to be able to limit the explosive plays this is usually the part of the crossover episode where we do some predictions and I don't know how things are going to go in week one I don't think it's going to ruin either the 49ers of the Jets seasons if they don't get a victory in week one but I want to go to a prediction a little further down the road John is this potentially a Super Bowl preview with the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers in week one you know I've been burned so many times by the Jets in the past so you learn it's just been not so not to like get your let your guard down but I think this Jets team could be really good this year um you know I think they already have the defense now you're bringing Rodgers back into the mix and you know last year the Jets had a lot of Super Bowl talk but heading into the season I think there was some skepticism about it because they did not have the offensive line that you know was that you need to have a championship team this year they brought in Tyrone Smith they also traded from work in Moses from Baltimore so I feel a lot more confident about the offensive line this year and look the 49ers I mean the 49ers have played in the NFC championship game at least every single year so I think the 49ers clearly are the team to beat in the NFC I think I think this definitely could be a Super Bowl preview well we know the 49ers are gonna get there we just need the Jets to handle their business and and meet the 49ers in New Orleans I believe the Super Bowls in New Orleans this year Super Bowl 59 in February so maybe this is just a preview and we'll be talking to you in about six months here John about another matchup between the 49ers and Jets wouldn't that be something that would be you know I used to say this when like Adam Geese was here I used to make the he used to say that it was a joke and it's so different now it actually could happen well look if you could just go from maybe the worst quarterback playing the league to Hall of Fame level quarterback play it's a pretty big difference yeah I think I think that's a good idea I hope you get there I do want to see Aaron Rodgers stay healthy because I think this is a really interesting New York Jets team and I actually picked them last year before the season to be against the 49ers in or no did I pick I didn't even pick the 9ers to get there I did pick the Jets to get there I got burned by the Jets and I'm not even a Jets fan so I know how Jets fans feel now so I'm not going to try to hype these two teams too much but you got a taste of the heartbreak of being a Jets fan exactly I can appreciate it now all right if the 49ers continue look at Patrick Mahomes as the boogeyman if there's anyone cocky enough to feel like they can go in there and just take down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs I feel like it's Aaron Rodgers so yeah we talked about keeping him in the pocket and whatnot men just keep this guy healthy hopefully plays the entire season so he can do a little heavy lifting for the 49ers thank you thanks to all the everydayers out there for the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers fans locked on 49ers locked on
