What time is it? Game time. All right, Crock, nothing new to report. The 49ers expect Brandon, how you calling the practice field and they were disappointed. He did not show up in practice again for the second straight day after Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch both said he's cleared, he's ready to practice. We expect him to be out there. So we'll see if any fines come down because those fines start to escalate every day you're not in practice. And I think we might see something like that coming in the very near future finds are already coming for Trent Williams because he's not holding in, he is holding out and it's kind of sneaky loophole. It's going on in Cincinnati too with and actually in Cincinnati, this is the strangest one. Have you seen what's going on with Lamar? I mean, do you want to chase in Cincinnati? So he's supposed to be practicing. He was holding in. Yes. He was supposed to be returning to practice and then he just like walked off the field and didn't practice. That's that's the last update I saw. He actually did practice though, like, and then the next week he didn't practice again and walked off the field when he was supposed to be there or something like that. So I don't know what's going on with that. And he's a year behind on the timeline from where Brandon Iyuk is because he was a 2021 first rounder and Brandon Iyuk was a 2020 first rounder. What pick was it? So we'll train this three, Jamart Chase was five. Yeah, he was five. Is it? Normal for guys to want a new contract even before their fifth year, he's not on his fifth year. No, he's on his fourth year. Yeah. So I guess he's almost what he's talking about. No, but Devonta Adams and or Devonta Smith and Jim Wall from that class did get re-upped. So I guess that's why Jamart Chase wants to get re-upped. And I'm guessing the Cincinnati Bengals are like, cool. If you want $26 million like they got, fine, but this is a different situation. So that's a strange one. And I don't think here's what's happened. There's a lot of precedent setting happening right now, Croc. And I think that's where a lot of this gets very interesting because as soon as some player gets a thing, all the other players that see themselves in that vein or are somewhat related at all or even not even that closely related to what a, someone, one person gets, other people are going to want that. So a team that's really hard up, like say the Cleveland Browns to get a quarterback, they go fully guaranteed contract on Deshawn Watson. And then all of a sudden everyone says, oh, cool. I want a fully guaranteed contract then. And no other teams in the NFL were cool with that and everyone was like, yeah, no, you're not getting a fully guaranteed contract. So we haven't really seen that yet, although we've seen guarantees start to climb. And so I think for someone like Jamar Chase, he's probably not expecting it really. But his agent says, oh, hey, guess what, Jamar, did you see the Jalen Waddle and Devontay Smith from your same draft class just got re-upped in new contracts? Let's get this thing rolling now then, shall we? And so they tried to get this thing rolling, right? And for Trent Williams, Trent Williams agents probably like, hey Trent, did you see that Christian McCaffrey just got a new contract since he's the best at his position in the NFL? And he's not due for a while and he got a new thing. And so I think the 49ers set a precedent for Trent Williams to be like, oh, that's a good idea. I think I want that for me, you know? And so I think that's where we're at right now. And I think the 49ers are realizing, oh man, okay, I think we need to pull back on this. And we've done so many deals with so many players. And we need to set a precedent for our next contracts that we're not going to be pushovers and we're not going to get every, give everybody everything because I feel like they probably feel like they lost the boats a deal, went down to the end and they finally paid them. And I don't think they want to lose a lot of deals. And I think they have a budget that they're trying to meet going forward and they have a plan for what they want the 2526 roster to look like and how much they feel like they should be paying guys. And if they start veering off that path, I think they believe they might be getting in trouble in some cases. And I don't think they want to do that. And they probably want to set a precedent for other deals that they're doing in the future too. Like, this might go, we might not do this deal for you like we did with Bosa. We might not cave eventually. And so I think that is kind of interesting in how some of these contracts go and how some things go and how some players see another player get it and they're like, hey, I want that too. And as understandable, I think for some of these guys, I think it's a little easier, I bet even with Cincinnati Bengals and Jamar Chase, if this was 2025, I think the Jamar Chase situation gets done, he's one of those players, they're 100% going to pay. They want to keep him around. It's just a matter of just timing and making sure that both sides, that it works for both sides. But I think for like a lot of other players too, CD-LIMM, yes, he was holding out. But there definitely wasn't the dramatic surrounded as like a Brandon Iyuk situation, right? Like everyone and their mom knew CD-LIMM will get a new contract, CD-LIMM will get paid. So I think we've seen the theatrics with Brandon Iyuk because I think it's very clear the 49ers have a certain number they have in their mind and Brandon Iyuk is like, can I please get a little bit more? And it's not happening and we've seen the temper tantrums and we've seen the 49ers and we've heard John Lynch and John Lynch say, well, at some point you got to play and I've seen some people retweet that and put, well, at some point you got to pay. So it's kind of been very divisive, right? I think even in a chat, we see that on social media, I see that. You got some people. They're tired of breading. Now you've got other people like, hey, just pay this guy and get it over with. This has been, I don't want to say it as divisive as like Jimmy Garoppolo versus Brock Party or Trey Lance, but it's kind of splitting the fan base a little bit. It's funny Brandon Iyuk is another one of those where there's been a precedent set around the league and he says, well, look, I am in this caliber. I want this contract and the 49ers thought they had something done with Brandon Iyuk and I'm sure they're like, oh, wait a second. What we were talking about the spring, I thought was cool and Brandon Iyuk's like, maybe that's not cool anymore. And so the 49ers don't want to budge, Brandon Iyuk doesn't want to budge. And I think the problem a lot of people have with it is, you know, how Brandon Iyuk's going about it and kind of stern it up a little bit more. I don't know. We're in a weird spot right now with the 49ers. We are a week away from football. This is Thursday night as we record this seven days from now NFL games are kicking off. It's going to be a good one with the Chiefs and the Ravens on Thursday night right next Thursday. Niners have a few extra days because they do have a Monday nighter, but this is going to have to start happening pretty soon if these guys are going to be on the field and ready to go. And even at this point they might not be fully ready to go from a like a lungs standpoint crock like how how quickly could you in your prime have been ready to play a football game. They call you off the street. You start practicing. You're working out, right? But football being football ready and being, you know, strong and fast is our two different things. So how long does it take you like how many winsprance you got to run? How many days of full practice do you have to play to feel like you're ready to play a full football game? It might be a little different for them. Maybe he has like a legit personal trainer that's on the side truly helping him my situation. I won't even talk about getting into football shape. Let's talk about just getting ready for a workout. I had, you know, kind of a short notice to get ready for Philadelphia Eagles workout. They flew me in when Chip Kelly was there and that workout, I just remember feeling like my chest, my heart was about to burst. Like I was that exhausted and I had been working out, but you know, working out a little bit and doing some drills and then going to a work, an NFL workout put on by their coaches and it's just you, it's just me and 70 people from the Philadelphia Eagles staff watching my every move and you want to go above and beyond with every step that you do. You want to give a hundred percent effort. I was dead two minutes into the workout. So, you know, there's different types of stamina, there's different types of endurance. I just told you I just got done running in 10 miles, running 10 miles, you know, about an hour ago. It hurt a little bit, but I made it through it. I was good. I was, I was all right. I've been running. If you asked me to go play a football game right now and run several, several reps with maximum effort, I'm not sure how long I was last. What time of year was that that you had that workout? There's 70 people watching you. He goes, was it like right before a practice? No, it was the off season. It was like February. I don't even know why they were there and so there were three people that flew me. I got in late at night in Philly. You know what I'm saying? I had to get to Philly cheese steak and then, you know, I woke up next morning, didn't I hope? Welcome to next morning. They give you like, so when they fly you have four workouts, they give you per diem. They give you money so you can get stuff from like restaurants or whatever. So, I was like 150 bucks or whatever really for one day. So, yeah, I get in there. It's pretty cool. I'm walking. I see my Vic's locker room and stuff like that, you know, I think, yeah, my Vic and it was crazy, man. You walked to their facility, not a huge, not a huge indoor practice facility that they have, but there were three guys there. It was me and the office alignment and a linebacker. They had me run my 40. Boom, wasn't terrible. All right. Let's go. Then they had the other guys work out first, the office alignment worked out and then the LB worked out and then I worked out were in the indoor, but it's freezing cold. So, I warmed up really good for my 40, but then I had to wait for those guys workouts to be finished and then everybody turns their eyes to me. I'm trying to stay warm. I was terrible. I hated that experience. I think middle cough was there. I think middle cough was still, I think middle cough was still a scout there. So, if somebody can ask middle cough about those workouts, I don't know if I brought it up to him, but I'm 100% certain he was there. He was still there at that time. I think he got let go after the draft, which was like a few months later. So, he was there during my workout. Oh, so middle cough got let go because they saw how good you were later and they're like, "Hey, middle cough, why didn't you pound the table for Crocker?" We missed on that. I don't know if it worked like that, but I listened to middle cough. It doesn't sound like he likes Chip Kelly too much and Chip Kelly was the head coach at that time. There was something with him and Chip, something about, I think like Matt Barkley or something. I think middle cough was like he sucks and Chip Kelly didn't like them. I've listened to enough of his podcast. I should know the story of the guy. Well, we've got to get him on the pod then and talk Eric Crocker workout. He wasn't wrong about Matt Barkley though, I will say that, if that's what it will last. All right. Next, let's talk, "Who's on the field for the San Francisco 49ers? Good news. A couple of starters back on the field, could they be ready for week one next?" Today's episode of Blacktop 49ers is brought to you by five hour energy. I know for me, I hit that wall in the afternoon and sometimes I need a pick me up like five hour energy to get me ready for say the afternoon podcast, the evening podcast with Crocker. Shout out to the chat, by the way, Hug Fonga, that's a good nickname for Hug Fonga. Given 49ers fans of Hug today, I had a little typo in the background. Not that fixed, Talanaw Hu Fonga, not Hug Fonga, but he's back on the field. A quote from the defensive coordinator, Nick Sorensen, today about Hu Fonga being back. He said, "It's great to see him out there with pads and a helmet on, really excited, worked his butt off going through the process, not surprised because of who he is, always positive, good dude, but also smart, cerebral, and wants to talk ball violent player and wants to cut it loose." I think Kyle Shanahan said that he's probably going to be just doing individuals at first, but he was out there with a helmet on, and running around, and he looked fast. He looked like he had a little bit of extra in his step on just the quick clips I saw on Twitter of Talanaw Hu Fonga at practice today. That's a good one. Leonard Floyd is well back at practice, and so the 49ers, I think, might have gotten by one there and slipped past a big injury to Leonard Floyd with that minor knee spray. I was talking to one of my buddies, and I was telling them how the vibe feels off. He's like, "No, I've been listening a lot, Doyne, you guys talking about the vibe?" I'm like, "It hasn't been off to you." For me, I feel like at no point this off-season, everyone was together. I don't think we've had that moment where you look out there and it's like, "Okay, that's the 49ers team. You got Trent. You got BA. You got Kittle. You got CMC." Instead, CMC is a little banged up, but we expect him to play, but he's a little banged up, and well, there's no Trent, and there's no Hu Fonga, and there's no, but it's good to start getting, and then, oh, shoot, you lost gross models, and then Leonard Floyd, but it does feel good to get some of those guys back, to get Leonard Floyd out there, to get Tyler Nohufunga back out there, hopefully, some of the other guys, and everybody will be okay, but it's been this just weird vibe off-season, and getting Hu Funga back just feels like a little piece of the puzzle, getting kind of put back together, too, I can get excited. I love opening week for the NFL season. I love just watching all the games, seeing what's going on, but more than anything, I love watching the 49ers, and for whatever reason. As of right now, it's 3.37 August 29th on Thursday. I am not excited for week one. I don't know what it is. Well, it's a little bit less exciting. But what do you think the line is against the New York Jets with, and by the way, in the chat, Chris McCaffrey, still not on the practice field either. What if the 49ers roll out there in week one? No Brandon IU, no Trent Williams, no Chris McCaffrey? That's a very different football team than what we expect to see out there in week one, right? I don't know if I'd like that offense too much. I mean, we saw a look a little weird last year with just missing Deebo and Trent, and then you take away CMC, it starts to get a little funky. I do worry about the combination of Trent Williams and Brandon IU specifically because of the passing game and because of Brock Purdy. Let's say the 49ers are down or tied, and I mean, you think about Brock Purdy, and it's like, okay, that blind side, maybe you're getting earholed from over here. Oh man, your number one passing target. He's not out there over here. You're looking for that backside dig. Maybe you got to wait a half a second, boom, now you're getting sick. That does worry me a little bit, and then no Chris McCaffrey. I think the 49ers will run the ball fine without Chris McCaffrey with Jordan Mason in there. But all the other things McCaffrey does, and we talk about the juice that Hufanga brings, and he's an energy player, so I think you could probably feel that, and it does help to have him out on the field. I think McCaffrey's the same way on offense, that guy's an energizer bunny, he's a cyborg. I think just having his presence out there helps quite a bit. So you're missing quite a bit of presence with no Trent Williams, potentially no Hufanga, no Christian McCaffrey. Those are energy guys. George Kittle, another big energy guy, Fred Warner, another big energy guy. So I think you lose more than just who the player is. I think you lose extra when those players are not in the lineup. Not definitely, and again, just getting some of these guys back, it really helps. But what is your confidence level? As of right now, for week one, because you got a Jets team rolling in, I feel like they do have the issues with signing a song ready, right? Like that's their big thing this offseason. They got one big thing, and it's a player that wasn't even a part of their team last year. So we'll see what happens. They traded for him because they wanted to get better. But outside of that, it's like they're a little bit in a better place as of today than the 49ers. And I think because it's the 49ers, you've been to three out of the last four conference championship games and you've been to multiple Super Bowls. You just assume like, "Oh, well, it's the 49ers." Week one, they'll roll a ball out and they'll just kick anybody's butt. But I don't get quite that vibe. It's a new year and there's a lot of key pieces missing. So I think for me to kind of get that excitement back and know that I'm watching the 49er football that I've been watching over the past, you know, previous four years, need Trent Williams out there, need BA out there, need CMC out there. So still got to get these guys back. And look, if there was a game today, McCaffrey would be out there. Now the other guys wouldn't be. And I think the 49ers would be home underdogs in that case if those guys weren't out there against the New York Jets. New York Jets are a good team, high expectations with Aaron Rodgers in a quarterback. We'll see if he lasts more than four plays. And I didn't think about Hassan Retik either. Like keep him off the field too. Hey, if Trent Williams can't play, you can't have Hassan Retik because don't forget who the guy is that knock Brock Purdy out of the NFC Championship game was Hassan Retik. I don't want to see Hassan Retik sign tomorrow and he's out there on the field with no Trent Williams to block him. Like that's sort of a good combination. I just looked at the line for the Jets game as of today, the 49ers are three and a half point favorites. Hopefully we know home teams get three points. So if this was a neutral site, the 49ers would still be favored by half a point. So Vegas feels like even with everything going on, it's like, hey, Crocky, relax. Your team is still good. That Vegas line is going to change the closer it gets. And we're getting pretty close to even if they sign, they're not going to be full go out there. Do you think Trent Williams, if he signs on Wednesday next week that he's 100% every snap in their Monday night football? Yeah. Oh, he's a super back. He'll be prepared. Like he does this all the time. He'll be art. He barely practices anyways. But barely practicing during the season and missing an entire offseason two different things. Crock, we are breaking news. We're going to have to come back shortly. You check on this breaking news. We might be breaking live right now. Big time news. All right, Crocker, lay it on me. What is the breaking news with the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Iyuk? So here we go. Adam Schefter says there will be no trade to 49ers and Brandon Iyuk reached an agreement today on the four year extension that will contractually tie the wire receiver to the San Francisco 49ers for the next five seasons per ESP and sources. The drama is over and the deal, not a trade is in place. Let's go. He goes on, he goes on to say, Brandon Iyuk's off season included a public trade request tweeting at Mike Tomlin posting pictures with Daniel's, sharing her FaceTime with Daniel's saying they don't want me back, getting permission to negotiate contract with other teams in the end. Both sides came together and I, you've signed a long term deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Hey, vibes are a little bit up now. I don't know if y'all heard that in my voice, but the vibes are a little up now. The vibes have just taken a 180 degree turn, Brandon Iyuk back just in the nick of time to be able to get a week's worth, over a week's worth of practice to get on the field and get ready to play week one for the San Francisco 49ers. A four year deal worth, it's looking like what, $120 million croc, so around $30 million per year on this contract. The 49ers were willing to go to 30 and it has been done, four years, $120 million contract for Brandon Iyuk with the San Francisco 49ers. Wow, it is finally done. The Brandon Iyuk saga is over and it only took until August 29th to happen and it happened live on the air here, on lockdown 49ers, $76 million guaranteed, it looks like for Brandon Iyuk too, which is a pretty good chunk. It's not the $100 million guaranteed that CD lamb got, but $76 million of a 120 contract is a nice little guarantee, so Trent Williams, you're up next, Brandon Iyuk is done. That deal is done and he will remain a San Francisco 49ers, all hugs, all good. I can't wait to hear what everybody says about it, what everybody is doing on the field when he jumps back on the field, so wow, the saga is over, Brandon Iyuk back with the San Francisco 49ers. All right, now what's going on in the Monday night football game against the New York Jets croc? I think it's a true three and a half in favor of the Niners, a true three and a half. I feel much better. My vibes, I'm not gonna lie, we've been talking about this stuff and I've been a little, but I will say this, let's see how people's tune changes towards Brandon Iyuk, see my tune towards him never changed, it's, hey, I want him with the 49ers, there've been a lot of people that have been on the other side, oh, just let them go, he's a diva, he's this, he's dead, and now what are those people doing there, they got the same smile on their face that I have? I guess now the only thing is Trent Williams. I love this report from Diana Rossini, the ending, the ending that many around the league knew would happen, the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Iyuk say together a new deal and the saga ends. What are you talking about? Everyone around the league knew what happened, all we saw were reports for months and weeks about Brandon Iyuk potentially getting traded, he wants to be out, who's gonna be in it, who's gonna be out on it? I know, I thought that one was pretty funny, everyone always knew. We had a feeling, Croc, we were still like over 50%. The last time we did our check was at 55, 51% chance, Brandon Iyuk back. After yesterday, that's when I thought, man, this is getting really weird and I think there might have to be some fines levied down and I wonder if that was the final thing, I was like, look, here's a good offer, we're gonna start finding you if you're not back. And Iyuk finally accept the deal, 30 mil per year, that's a good deal, that's where it should be, right? 30. 30. That's where. So he got more. So the thing that makes me a little, it's like, y'all couldn't have got this done earlier? Then we had to deal with all this. But they got it done, that's all that matters. They got it done, but hey, he played hardball and he got a much higher number than anyone expected. 30, it's kind of the ceiling for him, 30, 30 mil per year from the Niners, from the Niners, I thought the ceiling from the 49ers was 27 and a half from the Niners. I wonder if I guess, I want to know now, does this at all change the way that he's used or does that kind of tell us some plans moving forward with him, where eventually he will have to be a bigger part of the office? That was your whole thing. But you're like, gosh, I think they would be thinking, well, eventually, CMC is not gonna quite be CMC and Deebo, we'll see, but you need him to be a big part of this offense moving forward and paying him upwards 30 million per year, I feel like that says, yeah, we're all in on him, are they gonna utilize him a little different, but that's a bigger number that I think most people expected. And I will say now, for anybody that complained about him holding down and stuff, for him to get that number, 100% justified, 100% justified to do what he did. You could say, I wish it would have been a little bit less public and weird about the holding in and hanging around and being weird about things, and I know the 49ers didn't love that aspect of it, but as far as Brandon and I, you can his value to the team, it's even higher in 2025, 2026 than it is right now. And that's sort of what it's always been all along, all off season long we've talked about, even in the last year, we're talking about what's the plan with the 49ers, it's okay, Brandon, I use 26 years old, he's the one you want to sign long term, he is the true wide receiver, outside wide receiver, and he is Brock Purdy's favorite target in the passing game. That doesn't mean he's the most important guy right now versus Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel, and they feed them the ball in a very different way. But looking forward with the age of George Kittle, with Deebo Samuel, how he's hard on his body, how he's a couple years older, the player that makes the most sense going forward to pair with Brock Purdy long term has always been Brandon IU. And so that's why Brandon IU on a four year deal makes so much more sense because he's going to have to be, he's gonna have to grow from being the number three, number four option to the number two option to the number one option by 2026 when there's no Christian McCaffrey. There's no, and who knows how long Christian McCaffrey is going to play. I always expect running backs careers are going to end quickly, but if maybe this means now Deebo is the one that's going to go at some point soon. And they figure out a way to keep Deebo around for one more year or do they trade him next off season. That's going to be the next thing is Deebo watch. Do they trade him next off season? Teams are going to come calling. Can they fit them both in for one more year through 2025? But I think 2026 and beyond BA might have to be the number one option in the offense. Maybe, and what I envision for the 40 Niners is that Christian McCaffrey transitions into the Deebo wide back role and you use him more and more as a receiver and less and less as a hammer running back and that would elongate his career. That would, I think, add to his value and what he can bring to the team for longer. But I don't think he necessarily have to say Deebo Samuel's gone immediately, but that is going to be a conversation next off season and the 49ers have some cap space. They probably even created a little bit more cap space with this deal to roll over into next year. Maybe created a little bit more space to maybe this deal actually helps the 49ers get a deal done with Trent Williams. So Trent Williams is next. Can they get him done? I think that'll go a long way to flipping the vibes. But it does feel good that this is done and hopefully there's no weird long lasting feelings with Brandon and Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers, because there have been some pretty public reports that maybe the sides aren't very happy with each other. But the deal is done. So, clearly Brandon and I wanted to be around. And now he is going to be around for the next four years. I think I think all will be good. I think he'll walk into there. I think Kyle Shanahan will tell him, dude, you've been the pain in the ass, but let's go win the Super Bowl. And I think everybody will be OK. You know, it's not complete until we see what the DAP looks like on the field with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch tomorrow at practice. And we've got to see what Brandon and I go out to the practice field with 49er logo NFL equipment shirts on, because you've been wearing the all black with no logo, you know, he did. He wore a red shirt one day, but so, so again, you have talked about that that Raiders thing showing them on the sideline. He really cut his hair, huh? Yeah, he cut his hair. That's what I'm saying. That's why I knew a deal was done, because you don't go with a new look unless you get a new paycheck to go along with it. And so remember, here's, this is, I'm really interested to see what the final. America was kind of stupid, though. Wow. Croc. OK. Yeah, it was just like this, like, you don't like the new deal. It wasn't. Yeah, it wasn't. It was kind of like, it wasn't like a haircut. It was like he didn't choose, he didn't choose long hair or short hair. He kind of, he kind of split the difference. It was like he just cut the dreads off, but like all the new growth, he just left and I was like no, look, look, hey, just go play some football. Back in my day, man, I had some long, I had some long locks, I had some long. The long national nightmare is over, Croc. It's a dumb deal.
