Texas football is jumped to a six and a half point favorite in Ann Arbor, but which players will make the biggest impact on Saturday. It's your girl, Lacey, AKA laced up along with Jonathan Davis, your host to bring you today's episode of locked on Longhorns today. We obviously have to talk about the betting lines moving after this past Saturday's match ups, but Jonathan and I also want to discuss a few players we could see having a big impact heading into week two versus Michigan. Plus, I don't know if y'all were able to catch some of the volleyball, Texas volleyball over the past couple of days, but I could not in today's show without talking about some of the bright spots from their bout with number three Wisconsin on Sunday because I'm thoroughly convinced that this team will be competing for a three-peat national championship in December. So thank y'all so much for tuning in to locked on Longhorns every single day of the week. Please subscribe if you're new here and leave a comment down below letting us know who you think could make a big impact this weekend. Locked on Longhorns, your team every day. But before we get into all of that, let's hear a word from today's sponsor, Fandal. One second, okay, now we got it up. Now through September 22nd, all Fandal customers can bet $5 and get a free and get a three-week free trial of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV. Visit Fandal.com to get started today. Okay, y'all, speaking of Fandal, the betting odds for this weekend's match up in the big house and Arbor, Michigan, Michigan Wolverines, defending national champions, has seen some movement since games have been played this past weekend and Texas ultimately did everything Vegas really wanted them to do apparently because from a line that opened it about at Texas minus three and a half, it has since jumped to Texas minus six and a half against the spread. So Jonathan, I kind of wanted to discuss this a little bit. What do you think about that? What exactly do you think happened on Saturday, not just with Texas, but throughout the college football landscape for Vegas to feel that much better about the horns headed into this matchup? Yeah, you know, this is interesting. I think this is a pretty big line when you look at the big house being the biggest stadium in college football, a game, a place that's been traditionally tough to play in for teams not named Ohio State, right? Yeah. And even the last three years, Michigan is when that match up and so you look at it, Texas going on the road, being favored by a touchdown is pretty significant. Over a team that's still ranked in the top 10 now, we'll have to see what happens when the AP poll comes out. Of course, we're reporting this on Monday, I believe the AP poll comes out on Tuesday. But when you look at it, you know, like I said, this is a pretty big spread, but, you know, what is Michigan's path to victory in this game? That's kind of how I had to look at it because I felt like I was giving Michigan a lot of credit for what they did last year, right? Like damn, favored by a touchdown over Michigan, but as so many people have said, and as we saw this past Saturday, this is not the same Michigan team. So what would Michigan's path to victory be against the Texas Longhorns? And when I started to look at it that way, I could certainly see Texas going in there and winning the game by seven, just the same thing last year with Alabama, right? Like what was Alabama's path to victory? And Texas ends up winning that game by more than a touchdown, right? And I think Alabama was favored going into that game. And so, you know, Texas actually covered in that scenario. When you look at Michigan, right, like I said, this is not the same Michigan team and their passing game looked horrible on Saturday, horrible. And we honestly don't know who their starter or long term quarterback is. I thought all off season coming into the game that their quarterback would be Alex Orgy, just because he brought that, you know, dynamic, you know, passing dual threat ability to, you know, a team that wants to run the ball really heavily, right? But Davis Warren started and he didn't look great, and then we didn't see a bunch of Alex Orgy, their quarterbacks generated a 4.5 yards per attempt. That is very pedestrian. And when you look at it, Texas allowed, I think, 3.1 to Colorado State. But arch and Quinn generated 10.8 yards per attempt. So Michigan was pretty close to what Texas was able to do to Colorado State. And they were less than double or less than half, I should say, what Texas generated in terms of yards per attempt in their passing game, right? So it doesn't look like Michigan is going to come out and be able to just throw the ball against Texas, right? They have one half to victory being able to run the ball, control the clock and play an elite defense. But when you look at their running game, that did not look great either, right? At least in terms of their best player on offense, because Donovan Edwards, you know, cover athlete of NCAA 25, one of the best running backs in the country, obviously taken over that backfield from Blake Quorum, who's now with the Los Angeles Rams. He had 13 total touches for 27 yards. You would expect in the first game of the season that he would be able to come out and dominate a team in, you know, in the big house, like Fresno State, and that was not the case. Like I said, 13 total touches for only 27 yards. And we know that Michigan is replacing their entire offensive line. Like we saw it at times in the Oklahoma game, and we saw it in the Michigan game. That matters. We saw what happens when you return four or five starters on the offensive line. Like you're going to have a pretty good offensive output. The fact of the matter is Texas scored 52 points more than Fresno State and Michigan combined. So I could see why there would be big movement in terms of, you know, Vegas watching both of those games and saying, okay, I don't think they're going to win by a touchdown or, I mean, a field goal or four points, they might win by a touchdown or more. Then when you look at their passing game, 87 of their 121 total yards went to one player, tied in, coast in love with it, right now in terms of the running game, Khalil Mullings and Alex Orgy did combine for 124 yards on 20 carries. So they did average six yards a carry between those two players. But like I said, it really seems like Michigan only has one path to Victor, right? That is running the ball really, really well in playing elite defense. But if Pika Kowski in this defense comes in and says, we're going to stack the box and force you to beat us on the outside. Can Michigan do it? I don't think so. And then when you look at this elite defense, right, both of their edges were great at over 90 for pro football focus. We know they have two of the best defensive tackles in the country, one of the best corners in the country. They certainly are really good on that side of the ball. But what we saw from Texas is offense, right? Will they be able to stop all of that for 60 minutes? And like we saw with Clemson, Clemson's defense looked really good. But eventually they broke because their offense kept going three and out. And what I think is just Texas defense is going to suffocate that offense. They're going to be tough to move the ball on at first. But eventually they're going to break because they're going to continuously be on the field because their offense is going to be going three and out. So when I first saw the spread, I was like, damn, this is a lot, six and a half. But the more I think about it, the more I think Michigan just doesn't have enough to beat this Texas team. And Texas probably will go in there and win by a touchdown. I'm right there with you. I completely agree with you. Everything that you said is right on the money. I think ultimately Vegas saw exactly what everybody else saw. They saw a Texas team that took care of business against an inferior opponent, something that we haven't done consistently over the past decade. You know, we played a pretty balanced, aggressive style of football, not to mention, you know, you switch to the second line and the offense is still humming. You know, you go from Quinn to Arch and it's like there's zero drop off. So I think Texas made a statement to not only Texas fans this past weekend, but to the entire country and obviously to Vegas that we mean business. We plan on competing with the best of the best in the SEC and in the nation. And at the same time, it goes back to what you were saying about Michigan. And I feel like Michigan left a lot to be desired specifically on the offensive side of the ball. Davis Warren is a much more of a true pocket passer than Alex Orgy and I did expect to see more of Alex Orgy because that's what we've kind of heard all off season. But honestly, like you said, I was not impressed with their passing game at all. And considering it against Fresno State, I understand it's the first game of the season. But, you know, defending national champions, I definitely expected a little bit more. And that just can further confirm to me that like you said, it'll be a very, very run forward type of game because they're running backs were really the only part of the offense that actually could get anything going. They didn't still didn't do much, but they were the only they were really the only parts that could generate any sort of offense for Michigan at that time. So I know that looking back defending national champion, it's very easy to it's very easy to get intimidated by what they did last season, you know, 15 to no national champions. It is what it is. And you're going to the big house. So it's obviously a very, very big game. But I'm definitely with you that I agree that we I could definitely see us especially after this past week and going into the big house and winning by seven for sure. All I know is those defensive tackles better be ready because our running backs are going to be coming at you as much as humanly possible. So quick word from our school. Oh, go ahead. Sorry. Just one thing I want to really say too is when you look at the floor of that game, right? You know, Texas, that game was never in doubt, right? You never felt like Oh, Colorado State is making this more interesting than it's supposed to be. When you look at that Michigan, you know, Fresno State game, that was a I believe seven point game at halftime. All right, you know, and then two minutes left, they were only up 13, right? You know, 30 to 10, even though that doesn't look impressive, it's only that way because Will Johnson had an 86 yard interception return with two minutes left, right? So up until two minutes left in the game against Fresno State, it was a 13 point game, right? So I mean, they struggled to put away a Fresno State team while Texas absolutely massacred Colorado State. And so it makes sense that Vegas would watch both of those games and say, yeah, Texas is better than we thought and Michigan is not as good as we originally thought coming into the season. Definitely. Absolutely. Quick word from our sponsor. And then we're going to get into a few of our possible impact players coming into week two passion drive and patience. Now the fun part, one of my favorite things I noticed on Saturday was just how many guys were making plays. That was one of my favorite things about watching the game on Saturday is it seemed like every single play that was happening, there was another guy that was getting a touch, there was another guy that was getting some yak that was getting a run that was doing this, doing that. We had freshmen score and touchdowns, snagging picks, we had veterans stepping up on the back end of the defense and playing some very, very good coverage on a couple of very talented past catchers, but one thing I definitely expect to see more of on Saturday is a more definitive starting rotation from top to bottom. We had so many guys making plays for both of us on both sides of the ball versus Colorado state, but who are we going to go to to make the biggest difference on the field on Saturday? I feel like there were a lot of really good options for this, so Jonathan, I got to hear your thoughts because, like I said, there were just so many options because so many many standouts from Saturday. Yeah, so I thought about this like an hour before we recorded and I probably did this wrong, like because in terms of impact players, like when you're watching the game, and then they show like the players on offense and defense, who they expect have the biggest impact. I'm also went with the most important players, but probably, you know, I guess they have to be impact players for us to win and press the cover fan dual spread of six and a half if you're all putting money on the spread. So what I looked at it, I first went with Jake Majors at Hayden Conner, right? I thought that divine Campbell and, you know, Cam Williams did really good on Saturday. Cam Williams was co-offensive lineman of the week in the SEC. Thank you, Lacey, for, you know, bringing that to my attention earlier. But I think that one of the biggest matchups of this game, and we talk about Michigan's path to victory, is their detackles taking over this game, similar to the way that, you know, Samadre, Swet and Byron Murphy did against so many opponents last year. When you look at Kenneth Grant and Mason Graham, right, those are two of the best defensive lineman in college football, Mason Graham might be the best defensive lineman in college football, right? And they're going to be going against primarily Jake Majors and Hayden Conner, right? And so when you look at it, you know, if they can win that matchup, and if they can continuously push the pocket, that's going to cause trouble for Quinn Ewers, right? The best way to rattle a quarterback is to get pressure up the middle so he can't step up and you're forcing him to the left or the right and then having to make throws on the run. If not, you know, Quinn Ewers off of his square, you know, get him out of the pocket, force him moving to the left or to the right, that can really disrupt our passing game. Also we know Sarge, Brennan, buttern is that inside zone, right? If we can't get, you know, a push up the middle and we can't run the ball, that's going to affect everything else we do. I saw so much on Saturday, you know, with the play action and the RPO, right? But that doesn't work if you're not running the ball effectively, right? And so, you know, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant up front can change everything we want to do on the offensive side of the ball and Michigan has the speed on defense to where we can't just run everything outside, right? So, you know, when I look at it, you know, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant really could take over this game if we don't block them effectively up front, they can really change everything we want to do on the offensive side of the ball. Isaiah Bond, right? You saw it. He's the new Xavier worthy. He's the number one wide receiver. When things are in doubt, Quinn Ewers is looking his way, right? I don't necessarily have the numbers, right? In terms of Will Johnson, he is one of the best corners in the country, not sure how much he travels, but there are going to be moments where Isaiah Bond is on Will Johnson and he's going to have to win that matchup. Whoever's on Will Johnson is going to have to win that matchup. We cannot allow Will Johnson to take away one side of the field, right? One thing that Quinn Ewers is still working on is being able to go through his progressions. A lot of time, he locks on to one wide receiver or one pass catch, right? So if you have Will Johnson taking away one side of the field completely, then that's going to cripple our passing offense. Then when I look at the defense, right? Like I said, Michigan's only path to victory is really trying to run it down our throats. And we did just give up 100 yards to Colorado State's running back. I know it was on 24 carries, but this is a team that didn't give up too many 100 yard rushes last year, I think maybe one or two max in 14 games. So Brendan Broden and Alfred Collins up front are going to have to stop that new offensive line and Donovan Edwards in what's the other running backs named Khalil Mullings from being able to run the ball down our throats and control time of possession. The last one is Anthony Hill. He was special last week and last week, excuse me, last year and week two is when he really had his coming out party with the two sacks against Alabama. He's going to have a dominant game. He's going to have to have a dynamic game, dominant game for Texas to win because like I said, their only path to victory is running it down our throats, going to have to get a good push up front with Alfred Collins and Vernon Broden. But Anthony Hill is going to have to make sure that he's dominant from sideline to sideline and making sure that that running game does not get passed him into the second and third level. He's going to have to be the impact players, a lot of them on the offensive and defensive line because that's where Michigan is going to try to win this game. No, and that makes a lot of sense. That makes a lot of sense. But it's super funny how like we can both have a topic and perceive it completely differently and how just the thoughts and the way that we go about it is just a little bit different because I went one offensive and one defensive. I picked one offensive impact player and one defensive impact player. So it's just cool with the different personalities and everything. It's really cool to see the different perspectives. On the offensive and the wrong pressure, you probably do it right. I thought you did it right. So maybe we just meet in the middle next time, but on the offensive side of the ball, I chose Silas Bolden because we didn't really see a lot of him on Saturday outside of Arch's beautiful little shovel pass to him before he kind of supermanned into the end zone there. But with how much we've heard about him in the off season and with how much of an impact we've heard he's made throughout all of fall camp, he's been one of the most talked about names in that receiver room since he arrived on the 40 acres. So with us not seeing much of him on Saturday, what that tells me is that Sarcz got some stuff dialed up that he did not want Michigan to see. So for me, I immediately thought about Silas Bolden because like I said, a thousand percent would not shock me if Sarcz created a role specifically for Silas and consciously chose not to give Michigan much film on him. He's fast, he's quick. I think Silas can be a guy that Sarcz can utilize in some really unique looks and some really unique matchups. And I think that he can really exploit that big, bad Michigan secondary if they're not ready for him. So that is an offensive guy that I really think that could make an impact, especially with the way that we've heard about him during fall camp. But on the defensive side of the ball, this one actually kind of made me really, really excited because David Benda, I loved what I saw from David Benda on Saturday. If John A. Barron is the brains of the defense, I feel like David Benda has solidified himself as the heartbeat of the defense, the energy that he plays with, the veterans, the veteran leadership that he shows both on and off the field, you can tell that whole room respects him. It, like I said, the energy that he plays with. Did you see how quickly he would close in on that A gap? There were times that the handoff would happen and David Benda would already be in the backfield. So I think with it seeming to be a pretty run first Michigan offense we're facing, David Benda has the opportunity to have a really, really big time game and some big time moments with the way that he's matured. And I think he's going to do whatever you can to make an impact on Saturday. So I chose David Benda because like I said, I just, I'm really, really excited to see what he is able to do, especially in that A gap when it comes to defending the run. So that's where my head is at. Yeah. Those are great picks for sure. Like you said, David Benda just shot out of a cannon, you know, along with Anthony Hill. So you know, we were kind of together there on the linebacker spots. You know, I just want to make a point about Silas Bolden really quick. You talked about, you know, the impact that he brings on offense, but when you're going against an elite defense, you know, in a game like this, field position is going to be huge, right? So I think that's going to take a lot of pressure off of this offense, right? This is not a defense that you want to have to drive 75, 80 yards on repeatedly to score points, right? If he can give us that one big return that could take us to the 40 or the 50, even put us on their side of the field, those could be the points that could end up leading to a Texas victory. So not only Silas Bolden on the offense, but him and Matthew Golden in terms of the kick return and punt return, it could be one big return that could put Texas in position to score the go ahead points. That's a very, very, very good point. I don't even know why I didn't think about special teams. I was just so excited to talk about teams. That's why it's not a sexiest offense in each other. All right. So sad. But I'm just excited to see what Sark is able to scheme up for a guy like Silas because, you know, like I said, we didn't really see much of him on Saturday. So I'm just excited to see what Sark is able to do creatively on the offensive side of the ball with him. But let's just hear one last word from today's sponsor, FanDuel. You've heard us talk a lot about FanDuel, America's number one sports book. Well, we have something a little different for you. Now through September 22, all FanDuel customers can bet $5 and get a three week free trial of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV. Now, I am going to take center stage for a second, y'all, because I had a very, very good time watching some Texas volleyball this past weekend. Our back-to-back national champion Lady Longhorn volleyball team was back in action this weekend and boy, oh boy, did they not disappoint. Y'all, I was so pumped watching this game. The first couple of sets started out a little rough and were a little sloppier than I would have liked to see. Taking the first set, 30 to 28, that it was a very, very close match and they extended it all the way to 30 points and it was a very, very tough match up in that first set. And the second set, they only won by two as well, 25 to 23, but there are so many new faces in this program and so many of them really stepped up when we needed. Jenna Wennis, she's been here since last year, transfer from Minnesota, has shown outstanding development over the last year, even had more kills at one point than big, bad, maddyskinner. In the match, she still struggled a little bit with her consistency, but I really, really loved her aggression and she's become much more of an efficient outside hitter than she was last season, so I really liked what I've seen from Jenna so far. Like I said, our setting, our offense started off a little bit shaky, our setters started off a little bit rough, they're a little bit young, but got much better with their placement as the match went on and really, really brought it on in sets three and four, absolutely dominating a final four member from a year ago, winning set three, 25 to 15 and finishing off the match with a 25 to 11 route in the fourth set. Like I said, definitely started out pretty shaky offensively and wouldn't even really consider this to be a very polished game for the Texas volleyball team as a whole, especially from a hitting perspective, I felt like our sets being shaky in the beginning kind of hurt the timing with our hitters, but I was really impressed with the grit that these girls showed against a very, very tough opponent and like I said, we played very, very well and very well defensively as well, Emma halter, our libero, literally just received SEC defensive player of the week. So if that doesn't prove that we were digging some tough shots, I don't know what else to tell you. Oh, and did I mention that the match was in Milwaukee? Yeah, it's a home cooking crowd y'all because if they did all of that against a top five team with a home crowd, I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in store. And like I said earlier, I'm thoroughly convinced that Jared Elliot will have us competing for a third national title in a row in just a few short months. Well, that's it for today's episode, you guys. I really, really appreciate y'all for hanging out with us and tuning in. Please make sure you like this video, comment down below, and let us know who you think will make an impact against that team up north, shout out Quinn, and subscribe.
